Week three: ‘Finding quality children’s literature’ https://www.teachstarter.com/search/?query=literature “Teach Starter” is a fantastic website where teachers can access hundreds of different teaching tools and varieties of Children’s literature. This site is a ‘curriculum aligned, Australian primary school teaching resource’ which gives teachers the opportunity to search for any teaching tool they desire and hundreds of results arise. Teachers should simply add key words such as ‘children’s literature’ or ‘children’s books’ into the search bar and hundreds of results appear. As well as using the search bar, teachers can simply use the ‘Learning Areas’ tab on the top of the web page and select ‘literature’, once selected, 2000+ resources relating to literature appear. The results include but are definitely not limited to, blogs, Vlogs, resource packs, teaching resources, work sheets, lesson plans and unit plans. This tool would be an extremely useful tool to assist teachers in planning, facilitating and conducting most of their classes.

Week Seven
The goal I set in regard to personal literacies and the Victorian curriculum was that I need to develop skills to create appropriate and effective learning goals, to ensure I and my students are meeting
Teachstarter is a website that provides amazing resources related to most thing teaching and learning. I am able to search literacy goals and be provided with guides and resources to develop my skills and understanding.
https://www.teachstarter.com/au/teaching-resource-collection/literacy-goals/
In addition, another resource that I’ve found handy is Wordle. Using key words and succinct aims, I can use the app to summarise the main goals in the form of a word map. Its colourful and presentable manner can be used as a reference for new goal making/developing or assessing. Through this medium, the student can also have a say on their own language, literacy, and literature goals by contributing words or skills they want to achieve.

PROMPT WEEK 7
One of the resources I was introduced to, and was able to utilize on my placement was the website, Teachstarter. Teachstarter is a website that provides classroom teachers with resources that they can use in their classroom. The website has over 100,000 pages of carefully designed worksheets, lesson plans, posters, activities, games, PowerPoint presentations, comprehension texts and much more! The website is a great way for teachers to unite and all assist each other and share their well enriched resources and ideas. The website is very easy to navigate and lets you select the learning area you need assistance with, what year level and what topic you need resources for. For Literacy it gives you topics such as grammar, phonics, punctuation and much more which I think is super helpful to assist teachers with great resources they can use in their classroom.
https://www.teachstarter.com/au/learning-area/literacy/
The second resource I have chosen is the grammar conventions series books. These books are written by Australia teachers and provide fun and interesting activities and worksheets for students to complete. The books address Australia curriculum content descriptors that highlight grammatical requirements from years 1 to 6. The series include imaginative, persuasive and informative texts and use graphics and illustration to aid understanding. Each page has a blue coloured instructional bar at the top of the sheet, that gives clear explanations of what the task and topic being covered is. I have attached a sample page from the year 1 book and you can see on the front cover all the grammar an language conventions the year 1 book address’

Week 7
This week I have used two resources to help teachers to improve their skills about language, literacy and literature. I have provided ways in which teachers can effectively and confidently incorporate aspects of their personal knowledge to enhance classroom learners. Personal knowledge can be developed via many resources including textbooks, podcasts, websites, Personal Development sessions, YouTube clips, webcasts and many more. Today I have chosen two websites - both vary in what they offer and provide invaluable information for our professional and personal development.   1. The first is Reading Rockets - https://www.readingrockets.org/audience/teachers
Tumblr media
Reading rockets provides a variety of webcasts, knowledge about reading basics from ‘awareness to comprehension’, professional development courses, writing samples, development of phonological skills and so much more! Be sure to take some time to have a look at this resource, it has heaps to offer!
2. Another goal of mine is to become more confident in teaching comprehension.Teachstarter - https://www.teachstarter.com/au/unit-plan/applying-reading-comprehension-strategies-unit-plan/
Tumblr media
Teachstarter provides information and a unit about comprehension strategies. Teachstarter is a fantastic online resource which provides ideas for lesson plans, units and ways in which to cater for individual learning abilities through differentiation.

WEEK SEVEN PROMPT
The first resource I have found and actually seen in use throughout my most recent placement is called TeachStarter. This is an Australian site, so all of the information provided relates directly to the Australian Curriculum and it actually covers most other curricular areas. However for the means of this topic, I will be focusing on the literacy learning area. TeachStater allows teachers to condense their search into different topics, including grammar, phonics, spelling and speaking and listening. Within each topic teachers can select the grade level at hand and there are a wide range of tools available for use such as PowerPoint Presentations, worksheets, posters, games, comprehension texts, activities and interactive widgets (TeachStarter 2019). My mentor teacher and I used many of the free resources- they were great quality and very helpful in developing English curriculum knowledge and skills!

My second idea that could be useful for improving teachers knowledge and skills in literacy is through peer- observation lessons. This is another tool that I witnessed on placement. Once a term, teachers had to go in to observe three lessons done by another teacher. This required observational notes, conversational feedback and also included student feedback. The observing teacher would ask students in the class what they were learning, why they are learning and where could they go for help. This is a useful way of enhancing teachers professional development in the literacy area. Teachers can then use this feedback as a means of creating literacy goals for their lessons and bettering the skills that were identified as areas of improvement.

The Teach Starter Blog provides fun ways to inject learning into the classroom as well as alternative ways to provide learning opportunities for students. I have used this to design lessons for Prep students which made it very simple to provide engaging content for literacy lessons.
This blog also shows ideas how to set up the classroom to make it visually appealing for the students to learn in, something that is vital in Prep learning as they come into the school program learning through the visuals around them.

WEEK 2 PROMPT
Tumblr media
These writing posters were displayed within my Grade 1/2 classroom during my volunteer work at my placement primary school. The posters demonstrate different writing techniques of learning to write a recount, information report, exposition and a review with a checklist of what’s required to help shape and create that specific writing task. It gives the students a guide and continuing to refer back to the posters to make sure all the key points are in their writing piece.

I found this Persuasive Writing poster on TeachStarter, which I have found to be a wonderful teaching resource.
I chose this display because I connected with the difficulty students can have in thinking of synonyms, (or another way to say the same thing). In a persuasive writing piece, we often feel the need to repeat certain words that display influence or impact, but find ourselves repeating the exact same words time and time again. By having a poster such as this in the classroom, students can begin to understand that there are many ways in which you can get your point across to the audience without using the same words all the time. The sentence starters and conclusion starters are also helpful, in that they assist students in beginning to write, and indeed how to end a piece of writing too.

Literacy References
Two literacy references I have been exposed to this semester is the Literacy Teaching Toolkit and TeachStarter.
We were introduced to the Literacy Teaching Toolkit in last weeks seminar. It has some strategies on how to improve students reading, writing, speaking and listening. I am looking forward to looking further into this resource in years to come.
https://www.education.vic.gov.au/school/teachers/management/improvement/Pages/literacynumeracyleadership.aspx
On placement I was introduced to TeachStarter. This is a great resource for activities, lesson and unit ideas.

Saw this ad on TV the other night. This is an awesome way to teach the difference between ‘there’ and ‘their’. Mum always said if I knew my school work as well as the ads on tv, I’d be an ‘A’ student. Thank you Artline. #grammar #grammargeek #artline #teachstarter #teachingideas (at Burpengary, Queensland)
