It started when Zacharias Smith became the editor of The Prophet and merged management with Witch Weekly. The publications had always been a precarious step away from libel before, but Smith, the twat, somehow made them even worse.

Draco found it amusing, taking turns with his friends reading ridiculous news about each other. It stopped being funny when Potter was cursed after a particularly incendiary piece was published. White hot fury burned through him as he stomped around the Manor drawing room taking swigs of gin from the bottle and spitting his anger to his very bored mother.

Drunk and seething, Draco sent a flurry of owls about the incident that night and woke up the next day as the new owner of The Quibbler. Lovegood was thrilled and the Slytherins all placed bets on how long he’d keep the company. They should have known better than to bet against a hacked-off Draco Malfoy. 

A year later, The Quibbler’s popularity surpassed Witch Weekly and The Prophet both. With its painstaking fact-checking and its principled writers, it became the source of truth for the wizarding community. The Quibbler began to sponsor journalism students and up-and-coming magazines to encourage diverse voices and create a richer news environment.

It was no surprise when Witch Weekly and The Prophet shuttered their doors. Draco celebrated with a midday gin martini in his office and revelled in his victory, and Smith’s defeat. The knock at his office door was a surprise, and even more so was the sight of Harry Potter entering the wilderness of his office. He had an amused set to his mouth that made Draco’s heart speed up. He spread his arms then dropped them as he said, “Here I am.” 

“What?” Draco asked, barely managing not to spill his martini.

Potter dug into the pocket of his tattered jeans and produced a crumpled piece of parchment. He attempted to smooth it out and handed it over. Draco’s stomach fell as he recognized the slanted, messy handwriting of a very drunk Draco from over a year ago. It was a letter, a dreadfully long and rambling note, that ended with, “I will burn them to the ground for you and take you as my prize.” 

Draco froze and forced himself to meet Potter’s gaze. Green eyes twinkling and mouth turned in a smirk, Potter said, “I’m all yours, Malfoy.”
