Over the years people have been creating methods to make living life easier, and one method is the use of technologies. Have you ever experienced going to a library to skim through books just to look for something? Ever experienced writing a letter and sending it through post mail? If yes, well you’ve lived even before technology became widespread. Here in the 21st century, we don’t go through all the troubles of going through a lot of things just to do something simple because we have "TECHNOLOGY”. 

But what is technology? According to Merriam-Webster technology is an “Application of knowledge to the practical aims of human life or to changing and manipulating the human environment. Technology includes the use of materials, tools, techniques, and sources of power to make life easier or more pleasant and work more productive. Whereas science is concerned with how and why things happen, technology focuses on making things happen.”. Well that’s a mouthful, to give further background about technology, it came from two Greek words, ‘techne’ which means art, craft, or skill and ‘logos’ meaning ‘to speak of’; combined these two words mean “application of art”. Aside from all these bookish meanings, we all know that  technology is there to make life easier. Let’s be honest the world slightly became a better place after the discovery of technology. We had the ability to have higher standards of living. Through the spread of technology thru social media we destroyed stereotypes, we broke down barriers, and even provided a platform for livelihood and wellness. Through technologies also we became am even more productive world, we’ve saved time and effort and well, even money. It also gave us an advantage to connect further, we’re not closed by distance anymore, we can connect even if we’re miles away and it became an opportunity to educate, to relate and to understand things more. Just like what the inventors of technology dreamed of, technology could be a solution to all of our problems. Or... could it be the source of our problems? 

I’m sure some of y’all have heard this from your parents (your mom to be specific) “Those phones are rotting your brains” and when you’re sick and you tell them about it and they respond to you with “kaka- computer mo yan”. I mean they aren’t wrong it is true that technology is rotting our brains. 

We became overly-dependent on them to the point that we no longer have to think. The invention of calculator is a good thing but we no longer make mental calculations, making our brain work less. Machines are also replacing people’s jobs, adding up to all the unemployed individuals-promoting poverty. Technology also have a large impact on our mental and physical health. Being overly connected can cause psychological issues such as distraction, narcissism, expectation of instant gratification, and even depression. Beside affecting users' mental health, use of technology can also have negative repercussions on physical health causing vision problems, hearing loss, and neck strain. It could even bring us social issues, like deficits in social skills, sense of isolation and depression. We all know the famous Instagram-an app where we could upload photos. Sounds like nothing harmful right? Yes it is, but since we’re humans capable of feeling emotions and of course we want to be just like the others, we want to follow trends that we become so caught up with these things that we truly lose what’s important in life, which in turn leaves us to nothing making us depressed. Technology also opens us to a lot of things, anyone who has access to technology, even kids, has access to almost everything there is in the world. Which makes them more vulnerable to violent stuffs and unhealthy things for their development. We all know that kids follow everything that they see right. Technology can impose a threat to their well-being and could even make kids violent. Social media also place a lot of pressure on us, we broke standards but built other ones. Social media made people so stuck up with the idea of impressing other people and gaining praise through likes and shares. 

Just like what Sydney J. Harris said  “The real danger is not that computers will begin to think like men, but that men will begin to think like computers.” 

So before you click anything, make sure to control your thoughts. Think and Know the right ways of using power- which is technology.

Becoming the new faces of entertainment especially towards our youth, creating content that caters to the masses, welcoming themselves into the world of modern entertainment, Filipino Youtubers have boomed since the past year, especially the ones focused on DIY. These Filipino DIY channels are overflowing with creativity, providing artistic and unique ideas to the masses watching their videos, from interesting lamp designs made from spoons, to the creation of speakers from scratch using wood, they bring in more color into the world of entertainment. Some of the most notable names whose content I found interesting is Mozekyto, who focuses on creating and crafting dolls from and designing them from scratch and Techbuilder, who builds jaw-dropping creations such as the BB8 droid from Star Wars or a smartphone film scanner, an alcohol dispense, there are also other notable creators such as Kixkillradio Miniatures and Brains techKnowlogy.

Filipinos nowadays are more than excited to practice their creativity, and learn new things, formulating new concepts from smaller ideas, and showcasing their talents and skills to a wide audience. This pandemic, we are all holed up in our homes, grasping through straws searching for an ounce of entertainment and productivity in our lives, and with these Filipino DIY channels, we can create works that shine upon the masses, inviting even foreigners to see the creations of our fellows. It shows that we Filipinos thrive from creativity, we seek for it, wish for it and desire it in our daily lives, we see others create and craft amazing creations and grow fond of it, allowing us to see the a different side of Filipino culture, not just our regular old drama or comedy entertainment.

It takes a few tries to make a mold, but he gets an ice spinner spinning! That’s one cool experiment! 2. Underwater Fidget Spinner. AlexGoPow puts his fidget spinner underwater for some interesting visual effects. Spinning it underwater doesn’t do much, but letting the moving spinner hit the water looks neat on camera. Hope it doesn’t rust! 3. Fidget Spinner On Fire. IncredibleScience puts hand sanitizer on his fidget spinner and lights it on fire for a spinning light show. This entire video is full of impressive tricks and experiments, but the fire is at 5:00. This experiment is hot! (Note: This is dangerous and should be done with adult supervision only.) 4. From Screen to the MOA Stage: Youtube Fanfest 2019 gathers local stars

Youtube unveiled Youtube Philippines in 2011 as the first localized version of the video streaming site among Southeast Asian nations. In 2018, Google wrote that 85 percent of Filipinos online watch videos on the site. Thus, the birth and rise of Youtube stars.

The local Youtube community is not only alive but also thriving. The platform’s biggest creators and their fandoms gathered for the annual Youtube Fanfest at the MOA Arena on May 26. Flocked mostly by a young audience, the event gathered a diverse bunch of creators — from lifestyle vloggers and dancers to tech innovators. As they go from performing on-screen to an actual stage, this year’s content creators seemed genuinely surprised by the turnout and honored to be standing in an arena usually occupied by esteemed stars. No surprise though, these Youtube creators are stars in their own right. 2019′s YouTube FanFest noticeably featured less international creators than the past years and even traded the usual World Trade Center for the bigger MOA Arena. Still, there was a solid turnout in terms of the number of attendees and uproarious energy from the crowd. The screams from the audience testify that the local community is well-accepted and the door is open for more. 

Ken San Jose opened the night with a song and dance number, including his single “Lose Control.” Singing and dancing were common elements of the night, with performances from Pamela Swing, AC Bonifacio, Matt Stefanina, and Andrea Brillantes. Even self-confessed non-performers — That’s Bella, Rei Germar and JaMill — went beyond their comfort zones for their productions. Chief among the Fest’s highlights were unexpected collaborations: ThatsBella danced “Dalaga” with the track’s singer Arvey, siblings Ranz and Niana Guerrero brought in Lavaado — mastermind of the viral “Switch It Up” dance challenge and the featured artist of their third single “Dip,” Alex Wassabi tried his hand at streetball with Hype Basketball; and Matt Stefanina, AC Bonifacio, Ken San Jose, and the GForce delivered a solid 12-minute long dance number. The event also featured a bunch of firsts. For the first time since its inception, the Fanfest included a tech creator with DIY-er Brains techKnowlogy who brought in his retractable claw made of popsicle sticks and his low-budget version of Iron Man’s arc reactor. Riva Quenery graced the crowd with the debut performance of her then-unreleased single “Rewind.” While Hannah Kathleen also performed her freshly-finished song “Nothing” backed by the band Ash.

1. He freaking HAS cancer, and his job wont let him have sick leave? He has to have his coworker give it to him? The fuck? How dare you as an employer see your hardworking employee auffering and dying and not try too help in any way possible?

2. Hes a vetran. Served in a war. And the army with its several billion dollar budget, let him go without teeth for 40 years? 40 YEARS? Thats insane. I thought the Military had great healthcare. Isnt that one of the selling points? He faought for his country and then they dump him toothhlessm thats disgusting. Shame on the airforce. So much for 'leave no man behind'. They left him behind for 40 years. Fuck the military. Im appalled.

3. What the fuck? Lemonade standa are to buy an xbox or pay for a school trip or summer camp or something. Not to pay for her mothers cancer treatment! This girl is so terrified. Her mom is dying. Shes a child. So she goes to work to pay for medicine in a vain hope that her mother wont pass away. Fuck you. Insurance should pay for that. Insurance should cover treatment. Not a little girl who is desparate and scared. Ahe shouldnt be making payments. Shes basically working to support her mother. Fuck this. Dont try to make this sound cute when the little girl probably sobs herself to sleep at night wondering how she can maake her lemonade better so people will buy more, wondering if when her mom dies, will it be her fault forbnot doing enough. I fucking hate this.

I cant do number 4. I quit. Im so freaking sick of bullshit like this being fed to us as if wr werent living in a dystopia.

This is like if Big Brother showed how many crimea were avoided by their surveillance techknowlogy or if the governmwnt of Fahrenheit 451 dis a peice on how many more firefighter jobs there were. "Job rates have soared now that new fire saftey positions are introduced." Thats what this is. Its taking a freaking book burning hellhole of a dystopia and repackaging it as job security. Fuck that. Fuck this world. The books shouldnt burn but a fuckton of people should. Im out.

These four examples all come from just the past five months, but there are countless additional articles and segments that share the same lessons about never giving up, going the extra mile, and taking care of others. The articles are framed to make you feel good, to illustrate the kindness of others, to show you that things can work out when tragedy hits, and yes, to “restore your faith in humanity.” These are excellent messages that we could probably all benefit from having in our lives, but there’s one thing that gets left out on an all-too-regular basis: the underlying causes.
