Femme Fatale Guide: How To Master An "Effortlessly Elegant" & Put-Together Look
Table of Contents:
Treat your skin like royalty
Take ample care of your natural hair
Dress in crisp neutral outfits that cater to your body shape
Choose your accessories wisely
Embrace feature-enhancing makeup
Keep your nails clean, filed, and simple
Regarding your signature scent(s)
Follow your dental & bodily hygiene routines religiously
Treat your skin like royalty:
Use high-quality skincare twice a day
Wear sunscreen every day
Remove your makeup every night before bed no matter what
Use makeup that doesn't clog your pores/irritate your skin
Change your pillowcases weekly
Eat plenty of produce & drink lots of water
Prioritize sleep
Limit or eliminate alcohol, cigarettes, caffeine, and processed foods/sugary drinks
Keep your skin exfoliated/derma-planed
Take ample care of your natural hair:
Use high-quality shampoo/conditioner combos that suit your hair type & don't cause build-up
Hydrate with a scalp mask 1-4 times a month
Use cold or lukewarm water to wash your hair
Apply shampoo to the roots/hair covering your scalp and conditioner only on the "ponytail" section of your hair
Use a specialty hair towel after getting out of the shower
Always comb wet hair and brush 1-3 times a day when dry
Limit heat on your hair when possible & always use a heat protectant every time you do
Use non-elastic or silk hair ties
Get regular trims at least 3-4 times per year (get your hair layered if it's very thick)
Try to limit how much you dye or, especially bleach, your hair and do elaborate styles with tons of heat & harsh products
Dress in crisp neutral outfits that cater to your body shape:
Embrace minimalist basics (tees, tanks, blouses, sweaters, jeans, trousers, blazers, leather jackets, coats, etc.) in high-quality fabrics (Pima cotton, Merino wool, Tencel, mulberry silk, etc.)
Choose options in black, white, grey, charcoal beige, navy, burgundy, or cream depending on your skin tone and preferences
Invest in a collection of sleek footwear options (black boots, loafers, black pumps, white sneakers, etc.) in minimalist, timeless styles that suit the color palette, hemlines & proportions of your go-to outfits
Ensure your shoes and accessories feel proportional to the weight/silhouette of your outfit, color-coordinate with the rest of your look, and have streamlined hardware from head-to-toe (all silver, all gold, or one piece that mixes silver/gold and another gold & silver piece each to balance out the color palette)
Keep all of your clothes steam and lint-rolled, so they look crisp & fresh all-day
Befriend your tailor to take in or let out clothes as needed when purchased off the rack
Choose clothes/styles that flatter your body shape and proportions
Utilize belts and bra tape to adjust the waist, keep shirts tucked in, and keep straps from falling down or create an impromptu cuff/hem on your pants
When in doubt, select a neutral head-to-toe monochrome outfit
If on a budget, consider choosing black, grey, camel beige items to hide fabric imperfections that could cheapen your look
Choose your accessories wisely:
Select sleek, simple neutral (& almost exclusively) monochrome shoes made with smooth (recycled/vegan) leather with
Pair almost any outfit with a shoe featuring a slight platform, block heel, kitten heel, and/or a sharply pointed toe to elongate your silhouette
Complement your outfit with structured, pared-back handbags with no logos (Focus on quality and construction, not the brand name) in a neutral shade and timeless silhouette
For jewelry, choose at most one statement piece and all others should be focused on different areas of the body (e.g. don't mix statement earrings with layered/bold necklaces or stacked rings * bracelets). When in doubt, choose simple diamond chains or earrings, sleek bangles or chainlink necklaces & bracelets, simple pendant necklaces, and minimalist rings in hardware that all go together
Embrace feature-enhancing makeup:
Cover up any dark circles, blemishes, or hyperpigmentation with a color-matched concealer
Lightly contour with a bronzer that complements your skin tone
Fill in your brows for a naturally full look (or get them professionally tinted)
Apply a light wash of rose, coral, or mauve blush
Use black mascara with a little bit of eyeliner and/or a subtle wash of brown eyeshadow on the lids
Apply a "your lips but better" nude shade or "just kissed' berry lipstick or pigmented lip balm for a subtle wash of color
Keep your nails clean, filed, and simple:
Maintain cut, cleaned, and filed short nails
Opt for a square or almond nail shape
Choose a timeless nail shade (pink, nude, red, beige, dark cherry, navy, dark purple, black) with no nail art
Hydrate your hands and scrub under your nails daily
Regarding your signature scent(s):
Ensure your body wash/lotion and perfume scents don't clash
Test perfumes for a trial day to ensure they smell divine with your unique pheromones
Choose a fragrance appropriate for the seasonal/occasion
Apply a dab on each wrist and on your neck/behind the ears. If the scent doesn't project well on you, try applying these small dabs on the cuffs and shoulders of your jacket/walk into it to get it on your hair (if it would stain your clothes)
Don't layer more than one heady perfume at a time or scents that don't have complementary and/or shared notes
Follow your dental & bodily hygiene routines religiously:
Floss every day (after each meal if possible)
Brush your teeth with an electric toothbrush twice a day
Have mints on hand if you're a garlic, spice, or coffee lover
Keep your lips & hands well-moisturized and protected with SPF
Shower your body daily and be extra diligent in scrubbing your privates, everything behind, and under your arms
Don't use very hot water in the shower (it burns/dries out your skin)
Exfoliate 2-3 times a week with a sugar scrub
Moisturize daily or anytime you get out of the shower
Apply SPF on any exposed sun (especially in the summer or when the UV index is high in your area)

Would you ever consider printing your button down shirts in rayon instead of cotton? I have sensory issues, and rayon button down shirts tend to look dressier for wearing to work vs. cotton PLUS they are way easier to maintain from getting wrinkled!
Sincerely, someone who wishes to buy all your button downs
aaah i really wish i could accommodate everyone with the button downs 😭 if i do switch material itll probably be to tencel tbh, but i dont have plans for any changes rn!
also fwiw last time i floated the idea of a material change it was such a hard No from the majority of people sbfkf unfortunately i cant risk a sudden switch or carry more than one type of material rn!! im truly so sorry

Clothing - Pajamas (Part 1)
I did a phenomenal amount of legwork when it came to pajamas. There are tons and tons of websites out there that sell "plus size pajamas" and it turns out they go up to a 2X, also a 2X on their size chart is a US 16/18. Most of the search results for the first WEEK OR TWO didn't result in anything appropriate that was ALSO made of a tolerable fabric. I know exactly how long a recycled polyester pajama bottom is going to last, unfortunately. If this is a pair of pajamas that you likely won't use again after you've recovered, it's less of an issue, but I am trying to buy stuff that's a little more durable than that.
So you can imagine my shock and delight when I came across Land's End. I recognized the name, but I had never purchased anything from them, and this seemed as good a time as any to try.
Firstly, if you buy anything on the LE website and you're getting anything less than 50% off of the list price, you're getting scammed. They routinely have 60-75% off coupon codes, and usually there's a code already in effect on the website, a separate code for coupon sites (possibly multiples?), and a code for the mailing list at any given time. None of these three is always the best price, it will typically depend on what you're buying, and I highly recommend you try all of the codes at checkout to see if you can lower your total.
I ended up, if you can believe it, putting in THREE orders in a relatively short span of time (7 or 8 weeks, as I recall), mostly buying various clearance items to try them out. Not everything I bought was pajamas, obviously, but I'll highlight the pajamas that fit the theme here
I really loved the flannel pajamas, which are 100% cotton, sold separately as tops and bottoms, come up to a 3X and, inexplicably, fit me PERFECTLY. I'm used to clothes being wrong in at least one dimension, but their 3X is the correct length and everything. I love it so much I went and bought more pairs of flannel pajamas, and I got compliments on the pattern that I chose. It's a really warm and durable flannel, too, not like a lot of the cheap stuff most places use for pajamas.
They also have a flannel sleepshirt, which I also am quite fond of (especially as a light robe), that buttons up the front. I also bought, as mentioned before, a shirt/shorts set of their Tencel pajamas. They also have robes in a wide variety of fabrics, though I haven't bought any of those yet.
If you need to go larger, or find the patterns too feminine, they sell men's pajamas as well, up to a 4X, though I was less impressed with the men's pajamas pants that I bought. The flannel pants I bought in a 4X have been pilling already.
Unrelated to pajamas, though, I did buy some of their men's underwear (boxer briefs) and have been SUPER impressed with how comfortable and durable they are. If you're in the market for boxer briefs above a 2X (like I had been for years), they are definitely a place to look. I also bought a pack of cotton boxers from them, which were also really nice (though I wear them a little less often than the boxer briefs), but especially for surgery recovery (and especially wearing them as shorts) they are really great.

I've been looking into the environmental impact of various fabrics, specifically (organic) cotton and linen vs tencel/lyocell, and some of the information online online about the latter seems... wrong? Or at least contradicts my direct experience with the fabrics.
Tencel uses much less water and land than cotton, and emits less total CO2, so it's supposed to be more sustainable. But of course, you have to look at the total lifespan of a garment: if your tencel t-shirt used a third of the water than a cotton shirt, but will fall apart after a year of use, then it seems more wasteful than that Dr. Who tee you got as a present twelve years ago and is still going strong. And here's where I'm confused.
If you google tencel, you'll get hundreds of articles and blog posts, most of them independent from Ecovero (the company that makes Tencel), claiming that it not only uses fewer resources than regular viscose, cotton or linen, but also lasts longer, looks better, doesn't shrink, and so on. But I own clothes made of Tencel! It behaves like viscose! Fancier viscose, sure, but it ages like milk! AND it doesn't feel cooling on the skin on hot days, which is another common claim, and it refuses to hold its shape properly!
I own a dress out of woven tencel, some t-shirts in both 100% lyocell and 50-50 blend with cotton, and a pair of trousers in a tencel-cotton twill.
The dress basically looks and feels like a cheap viscose fast fashion dress, the hems and seams twist and the fabric wants to tear at the seams and fray through them. I've already had to patch it near the pockets after two washes (in the delicate cycle!), because the fabric couldn't handle the weight of my phone.
The T-shirts are flowy, which can be nice, but the surface already looks really old, and again the necklines get twisted because the fabric isn't stable enough to hold its shape. They're serviceable, but that's about it, and if I need to look more polished or professional than my usual "just dragged myself out of bed and into the math department", I wouldn't pick any of them.
The trousers are pretty new and feel like slightly softer cotton twill, so I don't have any complaints so far, but again, the surface is showing some wear after a few washes, and they don't feel like they'll last me as long as regular cotton twill, or even the linen pants I wear every other day in the summer and still look and feel exactly the same as they did three years ago.
TL;DR: I've yet to meet a tencel garment that ages gracefully. If I have to keep replacing tencel clothes every year and they kind of look like like crap after the first month or two, I don't see how that's supposed to be better than sturdy clothes made from organic cotton and linen which will last me decades!
Help me, people. Am I just unlucky, or do others have this experience, too?

Hi, just got one of your shirts and I really like it! Couple questions- first, would you ever consider transitioning your shirts to tencel? It’s such a soft material and I really like it but so far only have one shirt in it that doesn’t quite fit right anyways. Second question is, do you think you’ll add a feature to your site so customers can filter products by size availability? At the moment it’s a little disheartening to go looking for another shirt I might like and then click through to its page only to see that my size is sold out
I probably wont switch the shirts to tencel since i just switched them to cotton, haha. but i can promise that after a few washes with a good softener they feel noticeably softer! (disclaimer, please wash cold and hang to dry)
and i can definitely check to see if my shopify theme has that option to enable! im a little limited in that regard - if my theme doesnt have it, i unfortunately cant help there. i hope you enjoy your shirt!
