Who could say no to a Marjorie Liu graphic novel? I sure can’t (and won’t).

Zuli was raised by mystical bird spirits in the branches of the Great Tree, she’s never been anywhere else. But, when something sinister threatens the magic of the tree, Zuli and her owl, Frowly have to get to the bottom of it. At the same time, Zuli may also find out who she is as well.

It’s an awesome story, and even more so the art by Teny Issakhanian is just… amazing. I loved it so much, and, I am solidly in the ‘I will read anything based on the story and the art is extra’ camp. But, this are was just amazing, and, I’m pretty sure that I’d have read a shopping list for text if this was the accompanying art. Awesome.

I want to see Douxie’s story and character be explored a lot more than it was. This probably comes a lot from seeing Teny Issakhanian’s art but I want to know more about him. The other main protagonists (Jim, Aja and Krel) had more time to develop. Hell, Aja and Krel literally have a whole Trollhunters episode. Gimme me more Douxie lore!

Also a bit stupid but I kind of wanna see what Douxie, Archie and Nari did in that year they were gone idk.

Dreamworks Animation announced a prequel of “Shrek” for an upcoming feature-length adventure, “Princess Amelia and the Pied Piper”. It shows a watercolor 2D style created in CGI same as Disney's Wish. Coming this Fall to a social media art and literature platform near you! The upcoming flim is about when a lonely and orphan princess in Hamelin decides to find her true love, revealed to be Pied Piper (who’s hired by Rumpelstiltskin), and she knew that seen too many bad things in the Kingdom of Far, Far Away. Meet the protagonist of the Princess of Hamelin, Amelia. She’s romantic and beautiful. She decides to find her true love is Pied Piper, and she knew that seen too many bad things. Mae Whitman as Amelia in her speaking role and Ariana Debose in her singing role. Meet the Pied Piper! The Pied Piper is hired as a bounty hunter by Rumpelstiltskin. He has a magical flute with a dial on it; whichever symbol he chooses. His flute is also his primary way of communicating, as he is unable to (or chooses not to) speak. He saw Princess Amelia for the first time at it was love at first sight. Since Jeremy Steig died in 2016, we’ve decided to have a new flutist actor! Meg Ryan, Jonathan Dokuchitz, Mike Myers as Hamelin adults and Emma Berman, Glenn Walker Harris Jr., and Bella Ramsey as Hamelin children. The town celebrates the 5th anniversary of the Pied Piper of Hamelin from 1284, so Amelia would take charges of the story about how he lures the rats away and he cames back from revenge and he lures the children away, but expect the lost and last boy alone.

Here’s the first look of Pied Piper’s procession palanquin from the upcoming social media art and literature platform “Dreamworks’ Princess Amelia and the Pied Piper”. This is the scene where the Pied Piper participates for his procession when he goes sitting seiza inside in his procession palanquin, and the poles that will carry the rats to scurry.

Wingbearer

After seeing this was by Marjorie Liu, I had a feeling I was going to like it, and boy was I right. The story hooked me right from the get-go, and Teny Issakhanian's were beautiful. Zuli is immediately an utterly likable protagonist, and all of her companions—Frowly, Orien, even the brief encounters along the way—made for such a captivating story. Along with the characters, the world that was created for this story was super complex and felt very well thought out, which is especially nice since this was only the first book. This was definitely one of the best graphic novels I've read this year (rivaled only by Liu's other series) and I am so excited to see where they go with this story since the ending was such a cliffhanger.

Favorite Quote: We are all born at a crossroads, with many paths before us. And there is always a choice. We can choose to kneel down, or stand. We can choose to hide, or fight.

 Recommended Graphic Novels, volume 1

I read mostly manga, because I'm so picky about Western comics! But I've been keeping a running list of graphic novels I really liked, and I'm going to start sharing them here on this blog!

My tastes are often highly specific and choosy (I do NOT read romance, and I usually prefer any romantic relationships in the media I consume to be entirely ignorable or barely focused on) so most of these books have no romantic or sexual elements whatsoever. They are often fantasy, and the demographic I usually choose to read is often middle-grade, because I hate the aforementioned romantic nonsense perpetuated by YA fiction.

ANYway, that probably sounded very negative, so now let me sing the praises of a few things I like and recommend:

Wingbearer by Marjorie Liu and Teny Issakhanian: This one features a young girl in a fantasy setting, with a strong emphasis on winged species and birds. There is an adventure and mystery element to the plot and feels very Disney. The artist, Teny Issakhanian, has worked for Disney, so that’s no surprise. Her artwork is dynamic and gorgeous, full of color and life. This is going to be a series, and only the first book is out so far. Give it a try if you enjoy Disney and fantasy!

Salt Magic by Hope Larson & Rebecca Mock: Another fantasy story, this one is set just after WW1 and is a sweeping, whimsical standalone epic about a girl’s journey to save her brother and family from a witch’s curse. It’s a story about growing up and letting go as much as it is about the beautiful, magical elements. The art reminds me of Studio Ghibli, poignant and sensitive and cinematic.

Humpty Dumpty Lived Near a Wall by Derek Hughes & Nathan Christopher: A more unusual choice compared to the other two on this list, this is more of a picture book for older readers than a graphic novel. It is a creative spin on the popular nursery rhyme, and I won’t spoil it because it’s very fun. I think the art is the biggest draw for me, Nathan Christopher’s ink illustrations are GORGEOUS and rich with detail, and I highly recommend checking out the book just to stare at them.
