Name: Characters with Bothersome Traits

Debut: Tetris Blast

I am the kind of person who is delighted by, among other things, a certain pairing of words that many (sad) people may never think to consider in their lives. This pair of words is "Tetris Characters". I have already told you about some of those in the form of personified blocks, but there are even more, and this will certainly not be my last time mentioning the topic!

Tetris Blast is a Tetris spinoff, in particular, a version of the Bombliss game mode made for the Game Boy. It is like Tetris, but each Tetri- or Tri- or Domino has at least one Mino that is a bomb! The standard completed row does not automatically disappear, but if it contains a bomb, that bomb will detonate, destroying blocks around it. And this is what I was doing, playing the standard mode, when every five stages, I was greeted by a new little critter dancing on a stage! What a lovely surprise! But who were these creatures?

It turns out this game also has a Fight Mode! Where you Fight some guys! The manual refers to them as characters with bothersome traits, so that's as close to a band name for them as we'll get. Let's meet them all RIGHT NOW!

Cubit Cubit is a bit spunchlike, but if our favorite sponge was a grumpy nudist! It is the most basic of all these creatures, and just wanders around. I like its round armless hands. A very easy guy to obliterate.

Scraptor No offense to Cubit, but Scraptor is already way more interesting! It's a very geometric creature, a square "diamond" whose body is split into two halves. It is actually one big mouth, and the halves detach on a tiny hinge to open and eat bombs! This was the very first of these creatures I saw, because it is the first one that dances in the intermission scenes. What an incredible first impression!

Gloop Gloop is a little cutie! It is like a drop a dollop a squeezing. It also looks like an extremely simplified cartoon whale! You know how there is a whale emoji and also a cartoon whale emoji? Gloop could be the next stage of evolution. I also really love the way it laughs. It looks so innocent, but then laughs in a way that looks SO mocking, it feels like the cuteness is a facade!

Creepa Creepa is another little cutie, which there are bound to be many of when looking at little guys exclusive to a Game Boy game. I like that it is cylinder-shaped, like it came out of a can, or is a can! Though it looks cylindrical, its bothersome trait is to make extra blocks. And I also like its shoes. If it didn't have the shoes, it would be as basic as Cubit, probably. But basic isn't bad!

Squidly Squidly is my favorite of these guys! Look at it!!! It is like they distilled everything cute about Creepa into an even cuter form! Its smile is smaller, more gentle. Its eyes are bigger and bulge from the sides of its head, like its namesake, a squid! It has no arms to make it feel even more like a Video Game Creature, and yet still wears those excellent shoes. I guess the shape isn't necessarily an upgrade from Creepa, but this would be precious regardless of shape, and I am neutral about the change. Actually, it reminds me of a well-used eraser, and now that I thought of that, I like the shape even more! If this wasn't enough, Squidly has the ability to make entire rows of blocks, and after it does this, it dances happily, like it knows you can't get it now. This would typically be rude, but it's so cute that it can't be rude. I think it is truly just delighted!

Dug Grub Dug Grub probably has the best name in the game! Any name related to larvae is a winning name to me! If my name was Maggie I would always specify "like maggot" when telling it to people. Dug Grub is like a blob with a frog's head, and its eyes bulge SO much that they sometimes even appear to be floating! It has the bothersome trait of eating Mega Bombs, which is one of the most bothersome traits of all, because those things are precious resources. But if anything has to have an Eating Something Large Special Attack, it would be a Frog Blob.

Shadow Shadow is a cheeky little potato of a cyclops creature. Oh so cheeky, but also seems to be a bit of a sore loser! Get over it, am I right? It's just Bombs. It has Squidly's row creation ability in addition to probably the coolest ability in the game: it is able to enlarge its eye and envelop the playing field in darkness, which momentarily freezes the player's actions! I guess that is how it gets its name. I also must assume that the reason the screen goes dark is that its eye gets so big and effective that it is Seeing all that light before any of us gets a chance to. Save some for me! *Shadow's pupil burps*

B-Boy Finally we have B-Boy. Probably short for Ball-Boy. But there are so many possibilities... Buddy-Boy? Buckaroo-Boy? Boisterous-Boy? Maybe his real name is Baby-Boy and his parents dote on him so much, and he changed it out of embarrassment. He also adopted a new persona. Smug. Mischievous. Don't worry, he'll probably grow out of it after middle school. But for now, he is a real Bothersome-Boy! He ALSO has stolen Squidly's row creation ability! Squidly is such a trailblazer and I think would be justified in suing. Worst of all, though, B-Boy has a Bomb Attack that can actually regenerate his own health! Not an orb to be underestimated! Indeed, this is an orb to restart the level multiple times as a result of. A real Bad-Boy!

wishmaster simon is really funny to me because its like the easiest way to make his relationship with betty work but also. you go to get a wish granted and its this nervous little nerdy guy whos nice but a little stuck in his head sometimes and kinda endearing in a pitiful way and he mentions his wife a lot.

and then you meet his wife and shes a 50 foot tall four eyed primordial eldritch chaos entity that reconstructs peoples organs as tetris blocks for fun and mutates entire worlds. and then theyre just in love and kiss and talk about old sitcoms like a middle aged dorky couple.

What kind of games would Legion members like to play ?

Frank : He likes the most violent stuff. Doom, Mortal Kombat, Hotline Miami, Ultrakill, you name it. He'd also love horror games, and I think before getting taken by the Entity, he would actually have been able to try out the first ever Resident Evil game

Julie : She's not really interested in video games, unless it's something relaxing like Tetris or the Sims, or if she's playing with the others, but we'll get to that later.

Susie : She definitly prefers the more cutesy games like Animal Crossing or Stardew Valley. She would also be the type of person to have one of those Tamagotchi (did I get the name right ?)

Joey : He's definitly a shooter guy. CoD, Halo, R6, CS, and so on. He might hate Overwatch, tho. He also likes challenging games, like Dark Souls and such

Together : When they get to play together, the Legion is going to be spending hours screaming at each other over a game of Mario Party or do the dumbest shit on co-op games like Payday, Helldivers 2 or a heavily modded L4D

Not always. In The Sims, you can direct characters around, but the player isn't a real entity as much as someone who just takes control of how some things go. And if you're playing Tetris, it's hard to imagine how a "player character" would even exist.

AU Premise:

What if GolBetty never sent Simon’s mind through time & space, in which he spent his time in Shermys body. What if— Simon managed to put on the Crown the moment Betty zapped him? What if Fionna & Cake jumped out of the portal at the same time?

Hi. My name is Cat.o.loaf and welcome to my Ted Talk.

“…You were…Everything…”

Dazed & confused, Fionna, Cake and Simon lay there on the tetris cube as GolBetty’s eyes swirled madly. Clearly upset at what had just occurred. Coming to, Simon notices he’s starting to change. His hair getting longer and whiter, his skin changing to a bluish hue. His nose started to grow to a point!

Startled, he realizes he had put on the Crown! With a startled gasp and a quick “oh no”, he turned to GolBetty who was fuming! Her eyes glowed and started to zap Simon—-Miraculously he dodges the bolts of fury. Causing the crown to fall off, ceasing the transformation process.

This occurs at the same time Fionna & Cake start to gain awareness of their surroundings. So when they see GolBetty they are clearly shocked by her. Yelling at Simon who the heck that was. Simon explained that—That thing is betty!

Obviously Fionna & Cake are stunned upon hearing this—- but they didn't have much time to process much as Simon jumped into them after dodging an attack. Causing them to fly off the Tetris cube and into the unknown.

Leaving GolBetty in her fury and dismay and the Crown behind.

Casper and Nova

Aimlessly flying off into space Fionna & Cake and Simon are separated from each other. Going their separate ways in space itself. Leaving nothing but silence and the unknown to themselves.

After what seemed like an eternity, Simon finds himself talking to himself as if he was another person. Wondering what would've happened if he didnt of put on the Crown—-or how he shouldn't have done the ritual in the first place. He starts to self criticize himself to full blown saying he isn't worth all of this and it'd be better if he had just given up. (ref to suicide)

But then, two cosmic entities float over to Simon and listen to his self pity. Feeling bad for this human they introduce themselves as Casper n Nova telepathically. They then go into deep conversation about Simon's own self to which involves the whole Mind going through time and space journey.

Properly explaining both Simon’s and Bettys sides. After figuring out the answer a flash in Simon’s mind happens and he is awakened in Ooo along with Fionna & Cake.

Top 3 Fantasies

Now back in Ooo, the gang quickly realizes they have no place to go. Simon can't go back to the Human City–what would people think! What if someone saw him and word gets out that the Ice King is back? What if Marcy finds out……

Fionna feels back and starts to blame everything on herself, saying it's her fault that they are in this predicament. Simon disagrees and says it's his fault. They both eventually agree it's both their faults and there's nothing to do about it now. It’s what they do in the present that makes the difference.

Fionna then makes a comment saying that Simon actually looks pretty cool like this. Cake even mentions that the weird portal thing is still there and she can stick her hand through it!

Cake: How cool is that!

Simon: …erm… I’d rather not have a portal coming out of my head…

Fionna: heh but it is kinda cool.

They then wonder if they can still get back home. Cake is the first to try using her stretchy abilities. So she sticks her hand through the portal and is able to grab something from FionnaWorld. Taking the chance Cake then sticks her head into Simon's head and peaks in to see that……Everything was still the same! Nothing has changed except it was a bit colder than usual.

Excited to hear this, things started to look a bit brighter for them. Until the crushing reality sets in.

Hiding

Fionna, Cake & Simon hide in the Human City under the sewers for a while. Stealing food and clothes from other humans. Simon even breaks into his own home so the trio have a place to clean up and sleep in a place with a bed for once.

Only to flee the next morning. Leaving the place a mess; which causes alarm when they left since the walls automatically opened up. Revealing the crime scene that is Simons home to everyone. Police were called and they started to inspect the place.

Word eventually gets out and well… Finn, PB & Marceline hear about it. Don’t get your hopes up they’re not a main part of this AU [maybe Finn is cause I'm shipping his mom so….]

Prismo & Scarab

I don't have much on this yet. But basically Prismo breaks out of the cube. Scarab gets sent to Ooo and faces Fionna, Cake n Simon for a final battle.

Prismo sends the Multidimensional Phone to them so they can stay in contact, Even though he can get into serious trouble with this. He’s already in trouble so he’s taking a chance.

This also helps them escape the Scarab a few times too.

OKAY ITS TIME TO GET AROUND TO THIS THING LET'S GO

obviously going to be long, so under a cut it goes:

1. What memory would your OC rather just forget? XYZoul: they'd prefer simply not thinking about their life as a Physical Corporeal Entity at all, and leave it at that. Tetris: until we see more native viera stuff ingame, I like to think she was a guard or something for her village, and thus got into encounters with "intruders." she would mostly follow protocol, though their appearance and behavior is what got her curious about the outside world in the first place...I think she wishes she would have left sooner, instead of mindlessly fighting what were (sometimes, I mean you got that imperial presence and all) completely innocuous people. Carmichael: Uhhh well, a lot of it has to do with Ivanna...not just any one thing though, unfortunately. she was a toxic girlboss, and there's a lot he needs to unpack. to roughly sum it up, he was treated more like a funny curiosity than like, an employee.

5. How far is your OC willing to go to get what they want? XYZoul: IIIiiii would say to the point of risking innocent human life. since it's a cyberpunk setting and all, there's some tech out there that integrates with brains directly, so...they wouldn't want to directly mess with that. unless it's attached to a capitalist pig, of course! hyuk! Tetris: she will break bones if she has to, given her training I mentioned above...but she PREFERS it not to come to that, considering it's more along the lines of what she used to do. sadly, because this is an MMORPG, it does often come to that Carmichael: lmao he takes a loooong time to develop any sort of assertiveness. so, not very far. even if he's trying to make a point in a discussion, he'd be very polite about it, and likely get talked over. this may change if Azriel has any say about it, though!

7. What’s one way your OC has changed since you first came up with them? XYZoul: their design, mostly. it took a loooong time for me to come up with something I was happy with beyond just their face. I'm glad that they seem to be popular, because...it was a lot of effort. I googled a lot of retro computer mascots for ideas, only to discover a lot of the actual period mascots sucked LMAO?? turns out ""webcore aesthetic"" was more what I was actually going for. Tetris: I feel like most WoLs are bound evolve with the game's narrative, but design-wise...I did fantasia her a couple times, for mostly minor aesthetic reasons. she used to be brown, but then I saw a lot of fellow viera with the brown skin/white hair kind of look and felt stifled LMFAO so I made her grayscale instead to be kind of like a snow bunny. I also gave her heterochromia with this because I am cringe and free (and also a resemblance to my OC Hyacinth that worked out in another funny way (spoilers for that 2nd link)) Carmichael: WELL since he was originally for TTRPG, he didn't really have like, "his" own story. I feel like giving him that (which includes a relationship) just adds a whole new dimension to him. It actually feels weird playing him in a TTRPG setting nowadays, because it's like, oh no, his arc is gone!! his BOYFRIEND is gone!!

12. Is your OC self-destructive? In what ways? XYZoul: being a hacker in a cyberpunk setting is just inviting self-destruction by trade, if you ask me. always going to get a little too cocky and end up hacking someone you shouldn't :/ Tetris: Not usually, but I think the anxiety of being The Chosen Hero takes a toll sometimes and requires some management. For example, this screenshot was taken immediately after the Elpis arc, because I thought it was an appropriate reaction to what I just experienced, ghfdkjghfdg Carmichael: he's WAY too modest and self-conscious and it holds him back from more bold behavior. like question #5 up there...he just doesn't know how to have a voice. he will get better about this.

14. How does your OC want to be seen by other characters? XYZoul: if they had their way, they would remain anonymous forever, and then one day simply stop posting and fade into an urban legend that never gets solved. unfortunately, that won't happen Tetris: If you think she is cool and dependable, that's all she could really ask for. She doesn't really mind being "the big one" in a friend group. sometimes literally, because tall. Carmichael: HE WANTS TO BE USEFUL THAT PART OF HIM WILL NEVER CHANGE 🥺

19. How does your OC behave when enraged? XYZoul: Hacking your Internet of Things Devices to cause general mayhem and get the last laugh Tetris: The Power of Incredible Violence. I think this is just because she has viera voice 5 (which sounds like this in combat), but my friend group started joking that tetris is just generally violent, which I feel like informed her backstory idea in the end?! I don't think she's like. a killing machine or anything. but IF things come down to a fight, she's game. you bet I picked all the angry options talking to you-know-who at the end of Endwalker Carmichael: I like to think he can still keep his composure, it's more in the words he chooses and the actions he does. you may be thinking "haha, carmichael saying fuck?" but HONESTLY.....I CAN'T SEE IT?? I feel like if he was giving an Angry Speech to a Bad Guy he'd use like colorful insults from the 1900s or general sarcastic politeness before he'd resort to the intense informality of "fuck." he definitely knows how to weaponize snark in there somewhere

20. Does your OC have a tendency to get jealous? If so, how does this manifest? XYZoul: No, they don't really have anything to be jealous of!! they're the only XYZoul out there! I think they might get jealous if another cool hacker showed up online, but if anything I think they'd try and get in contact as a potential friend first. strength in numbers and all that Tetris: Not really, but I think if she dwells on it too hard, she's kinda bummed at the fact she had to get exiled from her community to integrate with anyone else out in the vast wide world out there, whereas everyone else seems to be able to live in the same place all their lives and still travel around if desired. what the fuck is up with that Carmichael: YES ACTUALLY LMAO. like you might not expect it from him, but through roleplaying with Bee, we decided that the next CEO of his old company, who had previously dumped him as he didn't need an android, then turned around and got a new sexy robo assistant anyway. and Carmichael finds this out. and actually gets mad about it for reasons he can't articulate. it's the kind of jealousy where he just vents to Azriel for an extended time to the point where Azriel is like "oh this is a Hangup for you, huh"

23. What emotion is the hardest for your OC to process? How about express? XYZoul: I think like...genuine vulnerability. their anonymous persona allows them to perfectly craft their image online, so nothing about their actual life is shared anywhere. but I feel like all that restriction might just be them bottling it all up...which can't be good. Tetris: I think being a general outsider to the rest of the world has been a wild ride mentally. Like, there's all this history and political drama she would have never known about if she didn't leave. Feels weird, like damn, I could've been helping people out here this whole time?! She doesn't really like talking about her past before Eorzea, I think maybe because she feels ashamed of it. She is an actual exile after all. Carmichael: trauma. basically his entire character arc is realizing how traumatized he is LMFAO it's not fun.

25. What is your favorite thing about your OC? XYZoul: ok this is dweeby but I've had the whole clock/compass duality thing in mind for at least 10 years now. it just seems obvious to me, a clock is time, a compass is directional space, so like, spacetime, duh, and yet I rarely see those two symbols juxtaposed together in anything. they're both circles with funny hands! it seems so braindead to do!! so it's cool having a character kinda catch on that helps get that out there lmfao Tetris: bnuuy. idk, I was, like, so stoked viera were in XIV, it made me actually go through the campaign in full for once. I feel like it's a combination of FFTA nostalgia, and also that viera are gender for me, I guess. I also appreciate that I can put her in a suit. thanks Carmichael: he's cute :3 and also like the first OC I made where I was trying very hard to be self-indulgent. concept, character design, character development, the whole shebang. Games Around Blocks

For this research, I wanted to look at a few games that use blocks in there own games as I prefer to make one of my ideas around this concept, I like it as it's similar to my last project which I loved.

One of the first games I played which I loved the look of the mechanic was Emberward. Emberwards main mechanic is all about adjusting the enemies path with something like Tetris blocks that have different shapes and sizes at a random selection. You can build around this with only some restrictions depending on the map that is given.

I absolutely loved playing through this game, and I would recommend it if you like tower defence game, even though it is not finished yet.

I feel like that this mechanic makes it so that the player has way more control over their play style and freedom, allowing the player to build mostly how they want around there towers/units. This mechanic in my opinion creates a more fun game to play and is my type of tower defence game. I also feel like that the blocks are a great way to approach this genre.

Another game that I looked in to, is Minecraft.

Now, I don't think I need to explain what Minecraft is, as it is the most bought game in the world. However, I did want to talk about what I like about the game as it is known as the block game, I thought that I kind of need to mention it.

This game is made around the idea of freedom, meaning that the player can build out of blocks, destroy blocks and create massive structures to all you desired. The main reason why I thought that I mention it, was my interest in how everything in this game is blocky. The tools, all entities, the UI, it's really nice too see inside a game like this.

Out of everything in this game, I like the freedom of the game the most, just being able to build with blocks and trying to push the limits of what you can make, it's just delightful to see in this sandbox game.

I did also look in two other game, a game that I love from Roblox and also Tetris. However, I want to research the models of that Roblox game as that's the reason why I like it so much.

For Tetris, I feel like there wasn't much to research as it's quite old so it was made due to limitations. To sum it up, I like how you get control over the blocks but only for a couple of seconds, forcing you to make quite decisions. I just find these type of games fun.

PESTILENT (done)

There is no doubt that these creatures have met their demise, lacking any sense of feeling, including fear, just the virus with the sole purpose of horrifying the living; the only actual death lies in what has taken over their bodies—demonic entities with no heavenly paradise awaiting them, as warned by Father Fernando. 

That was just a segment from the final chapter of PESTILENT, titled 'The Freeway.' Originally, the book consisted of 28 chapters, but I later revised it down to 27. However, Chapter 27 became overly lengthy. Then, inspiration struck. It seemed only logical, right? So, I made the decision to split the chapter, ultimately reverting back to 28 chapters. Surprisingly, the outcome of this division took me by surprise. It's like playing Tetris, where you must swiftly decide where to place each piece. Thus far, I'm content with where this particular piece has landed—something along those lines.

I started writing PESTILENT last year, which was 2023, in September and finished it this month, March 2024. That amounts to six months, the quickest thus far, and meticulously crafted compared to my previous books. Carbon Planet: Our Destiny In The Stars, which took me eight months, and SWARM: The Pentalogy, which took me about a year to write. But that's just the writing aspect of the story. These stories were developed years before as small plots and brainstorms; interestingly, they also evolve as you write them—the Tetris effect shaping my own timing and deadlines. Then again, that's not the end of it; I still have to undergo self-editing, including simple paraphrasing and word corrections to ensure consistency, before sending it to a professional editor. After that, I will send it to a few highly-rated beta readers for their feedback on the story. If any changes are necessary, I will make them. Afterward, it will be professionally edited again, of course.

Once that is completed, I will enlist the services of someone to craft a compelling query letter to attract literary agents. From experience, these individuals are exceedingly selective; even well-known authors today have faced rejections from literary agents before securing deals with major book publishers—or any book publishers, for that matter. Yet, self-publishing provides a lifeline; with effective promotion, your books can thrive without the need for traditional publishing. Nonetheless, while self-publishing is appealing, my promotion is weak. Therefore, I aim to pursue traditional publishing for PESTILENT. With luck, there may also be an opportunity to have my previous books published by the same publisher as PESTILENT.

As I've mentioned many times before, I began storytelling because I had ideas about what makes a good film. Afterward, authors like Stephen King inspired me to start writing books. It didn't happen overnight; it involved many heartaches, headaches, and moments of wanting to strangle assholes, but I fell in love with it. I love the complete focus it demands, even when in a shaky boat. There are always plenty of quiet times, making it even easier to control and craft storytelling, much like painting a picture.
