Derek from The Good Place could kill Macbeth, I think. I don’t think he’s ever explicitly referred as a man and is canonically a genderless being (though I don’t recall him ever explicitly rebutting being called a man either so I’m not sure). He was not born naturally but summoned into existence. And his birth parent, Janet, routinely protests being called a girl or a woman. So I’m pretty sure he hits all three clauses.

Janet could also kill Macbeth on all three clauses and she’s not a man (nor a girl), was not naturally born, and was not created by anyone in particular and therefore has no birth parent to speak of let alone one who identifies as a woman.

Yes, both Derek Hostetler and Janet from The Good Place could kill Macbeth!

As stated above, Janet is Derek's creator, and also does not identify as a woman (nor a man), which applies Derek for the Unconventional Birth Clause and Birth Parent Clause, while applying Janet for the Gender Clause!

Janet also applies for the Unconventional Birth Clause and Birth Parent Clause herself, being presumably created by The Makers of Light, Darkness, And Everything In Between.

As for Derek and the Gender Clause, I'm not so sure. He doesn't seem to deny gendered terms like 'man' like how Janet does, and is referred to with he/him pronouns. The wiki lists him as agender, though I believe this is in reference to his canonical lack of genitalia, and as we all know, one's genitalia does not influence their gender identity. We'll leave that alone for now until some more decisive evidence crops up.

In short: Janet applies for all three Clauses, and Derek applies for the Unconventional Birth Clause and Birth Parent Clause.

Is Hazbin just The Good Place?

I mean, in the sense of them both dealing with versions of Heaven and Hell, then I guess so. However, that's an incredibly surface level observation.

(SPOILERS!!) The main characters of TGP didn't even know they were in The Bad Place to begin with. Plus, their "sins", while disruptive to their lives, weren't anything all that bad, excluding Jason, who was an actual criminal. Although, simply being Floridian makes you susceptible to The Bad Place lol. Eleanor even points out that it's not like any of them killed anyone. That they all deserved their own Medium Place.

Plus, no one in TGP was really a "bad guy". Not even Shawn was really much of an antagonist, considering he does turn around in the end. The system itself was entirely rigged to the point where both "demons" and "angels" were suffering because of it. Neither of them could correctly fulfill their roles of either torturing or rewarding those who had died. The show focused on the concepts of Heaven and Hell and the philosophy and/or ethics that goes along with it.

Hazbin under cut:

Hazbin Hotel is a little harder to talk about since it only just started. Hazbin doesn't seem to have too much of a bad guy, in the sense of who is running Heaven and Hell. However, there ARE villains/antagonists in the show. Like Adam and The Vees, for example. They actively do their best to go against the main characters. Granted, Shawn did, as well, but not nearly as damaging as the aforementioned villains.

The whole point of Hazbin is questioning who truly deserves redemption and who is "beyond saving". As we get introduced to all these Sinners, we already have ideas of those who truly need to stay down in Hell. However, Charlie's whole goal is to prove that anyone can get into Heaven if they attempt redemption and WANT to repent.

However, unlike with TGP, her mindset is put into question here. We, the viewers, know that this is a flawed experiment bc we see characters like Alastor, who can't be redeemed. We know the horrors people are capable of. We know the questionable nature of what she is trying to do, even tho she has good intentions.

However, that does not mean these people deserve to be killed by genocide. Plus, this makes us wonder why these specific ppl are beyond redemption. Why are there some who do deserve and those that don't, even though they all are in Hell?

Unlike with TGP, we don't see many characters that are in this "medium" area. We know that Hell is overpopulated, but we have yet to see those who don't deserve to be there. The most we know is that Heaven has strict rules, but not even they know why. They don't even know how ppl get into Heaven, while the "angels" in TGP were (and still are) certain about who belongs where.

Again, it's hard to give a deep analysis of Hazbin bc it only just started. The two shows do have similar concepts, somewhat, but all that matters is the execution of the ideas. Their executions couldn't be more different. While both are focusing on the same thing, TGP deals with the philosophical nature of the afterlife, while Hazbin Hotel questions the morality/humanity of it.

and especially in this case, with how possessive and self-centered and controlling catra can be, this whole idea leaves a bitter taste in my mouth.

yeah, i agree. especially considering catra's obsession with adora isn't meant to be healthy. shadow weaver made it so catra's whole self-worth is dependent on adora - which isn't a good thing! and i hate that ppl reduced adora like this, too. adora had her own goals, her own journey, and yet the show decided to make it all about catra in s5 and pretend it was always the point of her character when it never was.

kinda unrelated, but that's sort of the reason why i dislike the soulmate trope (save for some exceptions, mostly the ones that deconstruct the trope). i prefer the kind of ships where ppl aren't predestined to be together. like michael from the g/ood place once said, "if soulmates do exist, they're not found, they're made".

I just read A Match in Hell (IT WAS DELICIOUS 🌷) and there's the line: "Ah, if only you could control the situation. It would make him cry with exhaustion". Michael planned everything. The birds always sing too early. A consistent warm weather that is too dry. Clothes without any tags but that still itch somehow. Mosquitoes. Forced monogamy. Frozen yogurt.

Michael really did planned. Eleanor ignoring Chidi's feelings, so scared of physical torture. Chidi overthinking about his own happiness, then about his disguised selfishness. Tahani feeling so lonely, unable to understand why she's never enough. Jason being... Jason. And you.

Without you, things would quickly collapse. A friendly shoulder for when Chidi's is to anxious, but still somehow making him feel worse for lying. You could shut Eleanor's fight or flight response, while still being a reason for her to behave that way. A company for Tahani, but that because of her need to be perfect ends up being one more reason to pretend. One more person for Jason to be scared of.

You were someone who believe to deserves to be on the Good Place. Someone who can torture yourself without noticing. Someone nice enough for no one to think that something is off with this place, but that still makes the four other humans feel bad about themselfs. You were the checks and balances.

But quickly Michael found out that giving you a absent soulmate was a big mistake. Because that absence, that guilt for not being happy, made you search for other people. And thinking that it would be a easy way to torture you, Michael spent time with you.

And that made Michael realize that it was actually quite nice to be with you. To talk to you. To listen to you. That made him think that if everything was different, if the stars had allign, maybe you both could've be friends. Real friends.

"I get it, he likes to work out," you confessed. Sitting across from Michael, the organized office was out of tune with your panic. "But he needs to do it all the time? I don't think he'd ever spent more than ten minutes talking to me."

Michael should've feel proud. He should've feel relieved that his project worked. But why did Michael feel bad to see you fighting your own sorrow? He should've been happier than ever.

"You'll have a infinite amount of time to spent with your soulmate," Michael were really trying to help you. He don't understand why, but he would feel bad if you started crying. "It can take eons for you both to behave like how you think that a couple should. I guarantee you that our sistem did the right thing."

"I know," you felt ashamed to imply that Michael haven't work hard on your neighborhood. He's a god, or at least something similar to that. You don't want to ofend him. "But I feel so lonely."

"But you're always accompanied," said Michael. "I notice that you're approaching other neighbors."

"Not that kind of loneliness."

"There's more then one kind?" Michael reclined in the armchair. "I still don't really know how your emotions work. You guys are often happy when you should be sad and angry when you should be happy, and texting when you should be driving, which is not an emotion, I know, but it's insane. So, teach me, what kind of loneliness is that?"

You laughed, slightly embarrassed. "It's a... physical loneliness." Seeing the uncertainty on his face, you tried to ignore your feelings. "I'm talking about sex."

"Oh," Michael widened his eyes. "I can see why interacting with your neighbors wouldn't hep with that kind of... loneliness. Another thing that I don't understand. Kissing is gross. You just mash your food holes together. It's not for that."

"You never kissed before?" That silenced your problems. "Like never?"

Michael nodded. "Your humans rituals are weird."

"But you have a human body." You leaned forward. "Chidi's from Senegal, Tahani's from Pakistan, actually everyone here is from a differnt place. Different places with different cultures and different rituals."

"What do you mean with that?"

"I don't think that we kiss and fuck because we were taugh that it's how life is supossed to happen," you ran your fingers across his desk, playing with the wood. "We do that because we're curious about our own bodies. So what I mean to say is: have you never been curious about your body?"

Michael crossed his legs. "I... yes. Yes, I've been curious."

And the thing you said next was a summary for why you were chose to this project. You never hear you conscience. Don't matter how loud it screams at you: if you want to do something, you will. Yes, Michael isn't a god. But he still a being powerful enough so you should have a relationship based on respect. You know all those things. You just ignored that voice on your head.

"I can satisfy your curiosity," you stood up, resting your arms on his desk, and leaned in until your face was close to his. "You just have to kiss me."

If things were normal, Michael would've kicked you out of his office. You would've come home embarrassed, hoping that Michael would pretend that nothing happened. But things weren't normal. You're dead, Michael's not-a-god-but-not-so-different-then-one, and his office is private enough.

You told him what to do. And Michael obeyed.

It was a new feeling. Michael never did that before, never imagine that one day he would be kissing a human instead of torturing them. It was new, and scary, and wrong: it was great. It was really great. He didn't plan that, he shouldn't be doing that, but he couldn't stop himself.

You pulled away, forehead resting on his, and felt the warm breath against your face. "Satisfied?" you whispered. You didn't have to open your eyes to understand Michael's response. You felt him deny it, almost exasperated. You understood him. You felt the same.

You kissed him again, and again, and again. Your mouth against his, your hands gripping his hair, until the space between you both was torturous. Without even thinking, unable to reason, Michael just knew he needed you closer.

You grabbed Michael by the tie, lifting him out of the chair, and pulled him towards you. Without ceasing to kiss you, touch you, Michael did what you implicitly asked. Now sitting on the table, you tried to get rid of his suit.

"What..." Michael shut up when he felt your lips on his neck, carressing and biting his skin. "Your soulmate..."

"He can get fucked," you murmured against his skin. If someone ever found out about what is happening, Michael could say he was tempting you. Seeing if you were selfish enough to cheat on your partner. If you were inconsequential enough to fuck someone that you clearly shouldn't. But the truth was the you were the one tempting him. "Sit down."

Michael obeyed you, sitting in the armchair that you occupied before. He watched you take off your pants, as desperate as he was, and climb into his lap. Your weight on him felt right. You kissed him again, guiding his hands down your body, almost begging him to squeeze your flesh.

"Touch me," but that wasn't you begging. That was you demanding.

And so he did. He grabbed you, feeling how delicate your body was in comparison to his, and kissed you again. It was so good, holding you while you kissed him was so good, that Michael almost didn't notice that you had opened his belt.

"Do you want this?" You got away from him, even tho you just wanted him closer and closer. "Do you want to continue?"

Michael kissed you. Ravenously. As if you were the first plate of food he've been served in ages. His hands touched your body, playing with your skin, glued you to him. And with Michael touching you, loving you, you fucked him.

Michael shivered under your touch, your kisses, your bites. He became a mess of groans and hands that didn't know where to touch. "Please," Michael found himself begging for the first time in his long live. He didn't even knew what he wanted.

Bouncing on his cock, you knew exactly what he meant to say. What Michael couldn't say.

And with Michael shuddering beneath you, unable to even open his eyes, there was a certainty in the air: this would not be the last time.

AHHH wait that’s so exciting!!! the good place is my favorite show of all time - i can’t overstate how much it changed my life when it was coming out and i think it is the perfect example of a show that managed to balance comedy and meaning AND of a show that knew exactly when to end. i’m so glad you’re watching it!!!!

hey! thanks for the ask dude, even though we’ve never interacted before. I don’t talk about tgp a ton on here but it is my #1 favorite sitcom. so thanks for this opportunity to ramble a little bit 💯

this is only sort of a headcannon? it’s more of a connection I made that might not have necessarily been intentional. in the scene where jason and tahani break off their casual relationship (I think it’s from s2ep10 “best self” ?) jason starts telling a super unhinged story about robbing a pet store with his mom, then finishes it off with “it was all a dream.” but then, in s4ep8 “the funeral to end all funerals” we find out that jason’s mom actually died of cancer when he was really young. as we know, in jason’s family, commiting crimes and going through with half-baked get-rich-quick schemes was an important part of his family dynamic, and that’s basically the entire basis of his relationship with his dad.

basically, now I just can’t stop thinking about a teenage jason, who lost his mom a few years back, having a dream about doing a scheme with his mom— actually being able to bond with someone who was taken from him too soon.

I have no idea if this was intentional, but it’s canon to me lmao. he just misses his mom :(

also, it’s really cool to go through all of jason’s unhinged anecdotes from his life on Earth. everything he says connects, and just. his whole backstory is So well thought out, even when we just get tiny snippets of memories and stories throughout the series. I guess you could say that for all four of the humans, but the continuity in jason’s stories stands out most to me. this show is on another level and I love it so much

and, obviously I love all the members of team cockroach. it’s so so difficult to try to pick a favorite. they all have amazing character development throughout the show (tgp has some of my favorite character work I have ever seen), they’re all funny, and all of the actors really put their entire souls into their roles. honestly, michael is probably my favorite (ted danson is phenomenal, and all his line deliveries and mannerisms are just really entertaining to me.) but, I really do love all of them and picking a favorite is so difficult. I could write an essay on why I love each of them lmao. leaving a picture of them here as a sign off :)

For the fiction title: "Chose: Despair or Hope?"

There's nothing good on TV. The most reliable channel is that same livestream of a bunch of Japanese high schoolers being forced to kill each other. Depressing, but everything's like that now. There's no time for good quality TV these days, when there's barely even time to raid the crumbling grocery store 10 minutes away from her old apartment. Every day, the same alarm klaxon sounds: Despair or Hope? Eleanor's never been one for philosophy, and throwing out the question like that, it's barely philosophy. This is some thematic darkness-light symbolism that she scribbled out a fluff essay on for that university literature class she barely paid attention to. Ten minutes of thought -- ten seconds of thought -- and the 'correct' answer is obvious enough. Who wants to choose despair, anyway? But hey, that's not the only question being asked, is it?

Or: despair has spread all over the world. A dirtbag from Arizona tries to maneuver through life in the new world order.
