absolutely love your based and poggers headcanons, not sure if you've done it yet but can we get the gang as like mythical creatures or fantasy beings, pirates, vampires, fairies, dragons etc.
Thanks, Anon!!
Mythical Creatures and Fantasy….
I haven’t yet! I know others have and, for the most part, I would agree with the ones I’ve seen floating around here. But for the sake of being different here’s a different take!
Bruno Bucciarati
Dullahan.
He would 100% enjoy taking his head off to be goofy.
Leaves his head in random spots while his body just walks around and bumps into things.
Will also make head puns.
Everyone hates the head puns.
But they tolerate it because it’s Bruno.
He will cuddle his head in his sleep, sometimes.
Also being able to remove his head makes styling his hair that much easier.
Leone Abbacchio
Charybdis.
Always lurking in the deep.
He would enjoy the solitude that the depths of the ocean would bring.
Hates land and will hang out in the tub to spend time with Bruno while he’s styling his hair.
May or may not have destroyed many ships.
Had a rivalry with Scylla back in the day.
Pannacotta Fugo
Dybbuk.
Though- without the questionable lore behind it.
He simply has a pension for haunting and possessing others.
Used to possess his housemates to get things done a certain way.
Certified control freak.
He no longer possesses them without their consent.
Especially because it leaves the host feeling very ill afterwards.
Narancia Ghirga
Goblin.
Hoards trinkets in his room.
Loves shiny things, in particular.
If you have a shiny, Narancia will take it.
Easily swayed into doing things for others if he gets a shiny thing in return.
100% Gollum energy at times.
Will call things “My Precious”.
Does it because he watched Fugo watch Lord of the Rings once.
And it pisses Fugo off.
Guido Mista
Gorgon.
Why do you think he’s always wearing a hat?
Because he doesn’t want others to turn into stone.
Also the snakes all have little numbers on them.
No number four.
Has migraines because the snakes sometimes just never stop talking.
And they steal his food.
Ya feel?
Giorno Giovanna
Griffin.
Proud and considered noble by others.
He just gives that energy off to others.
You would think he’d be a vampire because of Dio.
But no.
Griffin all the way because of Jonathan.
He just got his looks from Dio, that’s all.
Takes good care of his feathers and talons, though.
Trish Una
Phoenix.
When her life went into chaos, she was able to be reborn into a version of herself to better suit her new life.
Loved sun bathing.
Preens a lot.
Gets feather care tips from Giorno.
Has been the only one to ever see the snakes on Guido’s head.
She turned to stone.
Then burst into flames.
Then was simply reborn.

Okay so I’ve been thinking about @planting-historians Fugo and Mista post and I love it. I am obsessed with the parallels between them and it’s a great post you should all read it.
So like. I want to expand on it. And sort of qualify one thing.
Because their reading is based around the idea that Fugo and Mista are essentially strangers, which creates this tension between them when they’re the last ones alive from their gang. Which is a fantastic idea and it adds a wonderful angsty flair and I like it. But I want to take it a step further.
Fugo and Mista were not strangers to each other. In fact, they were extremely close. Close to the point that an indication that they might be strangers feels like a betrayal.
And that all hinges on this line from Mista in Purple Haze Feedback:
Tumblr media
It’s a line I think about a lot, and one that, during my first reading, got me hooked on the weird relationship these two have.
“All that time we knew each other” may not have been that long at all, by normal standards. Probably a year, roughly. But that’s a long-ass time when you’re outcasts, part of a tight-knit gang, and having to trust each other with your lives for a living. It’s clearly a long time to Mista. Long enough to have learned about Fugo’s past, and to know how to use it against him in a way that hurts.
And, of course, the kicker. “You play piano? I had no idea.”
It’s a meaningless fact. Fugo playing piano, by itself, doesn’t matter. It could be any hobby, any preference, anything. But it’s something Mista didn’t know about him. Something that changes Mista’s perception of him, even infinitesimally, from the person he thought he knew so well.
If we dig deeper (maybe too deep), I don’t think Mista’s talking about the piano here. Mista’s seeing someone he considered a friend, someone he trusted, who chose self-preservation over their bond - and then, instead of owning up to it himself, ran away. Had to be chased down and dragged back to face the consequences. He’s not seeing the person he thought he knew.
And if he didn’t know about that part of him, then what does he know about Fugo?
From Fugo’s end, what I find interesting is that Mista is the one person in his life that he never lingers on. He goes on long, repeated diatribes about Giorno and Narancia, reflects on his relationships with people like Bucciarati and his grandmother, and even spends a while thinking about his odd dynamic with Abbacchio. But Mista doesn’t have his own dedicated angst sessions. He just shows up as a figure in flashbacks every now and then. This could hint that they weren’t close, or that the relationship was one-sided on Mista’s end, but I think the beginning hints that Fugo cares just as much. After all, would Mista’s passive-aggressive comments be so clearly hurtful to him if they weren’t close?
In a different way, I think Fugo’s perception of Mista is being shattered in this opening chapter, too. I’d argue that Fugo doesn’t spend time dissecting his relationship with Mista in the pre-Vento Aureo days because there was nothing to ponder. There’s all these complexities with his other relationships - he’s trying desperately to understand Narancia’s decision, at once perplexed by and pining after Giorno, deciphering whether Bucciarati was a good person - but Mista was just a friend. In those days, he wasn’t a complicated guy, canonically - he didn’t like to think about difficult things, he had a clear set of rules he followed, and in their interactions, they banter and act like standard buddies. But in this chapter, he’s done a 180. He’s clearly been agonizing over things. He’s lashing out and using sore spots against him. Grief has changed him, so it seems.
And that has to sting for Fugo. Knowing that he’s lost everyone he loved, except for one person - but now, in a way, he’s lost him, too.
On a slightly different note, I’ve always thought that the two of them had something extremely similar about their natures, though I haven’t really been able to put it into words. But I’m going to try.
On the outside, they’re diametrically different. But they’re both so tightly bound to rules their minds have subconsciously created. Fugo constantly steeps himself in self-loathing and feels as though he has to repress himself, in fear that he’ll hurt others. Mista operates on OCD-fueled maladaptive beliefs that give him structure - about the number four, obviously, but he’s also shown to be very insistent about innocuous things like eating at lunchtime - and fears breaking that structure. If they deviate from those rules, they break down - Fugo has fits of anger, and Mista makes scenes and grows paranoid.
Their fates in Vento Aureo and PHF, respectively, are similar. Fugo doesn’t follow the gang for a number of reasons, but a major one is self-preservation - he fears the boss, and he fears the consequences of rebelling. Giorno breaks Mista in the PHF bonus chapter through manipulating his fear. They both end up loyal to causes they may not fully agree with because they’re afraid.
So I know people talk a lot about Narancia and Mista being similar, and Giorno and Fugo being similar in a foil sort of way. But I think the real dichotomy isn’t Narancia + Mista goofy laid-back guys vs. Giorno + Fugo uptight serious guys. It’s Fugo + Mista lacking agency over adherence to structures out of their control, vs. Giorno + Narancia radically exercising agency and actively breaking structures that come their way. Still probably makes no sense. Maybe one day I’ll write a post about Giorno and Narancia as reflections of each other, and by then I’ll come up with a better way to put it.
Anyhow sorry I just got inspired by that post and now I’m going into Academic Responding To Another Academic With An Overly-Detailed Essay Mode.
