I hate anxiety, man. Cause why do I, a grown ass adult, suddenly feel like a terrible person for posting suggestive art. On the blog that has a suggestive art warning. It's not even that bad either, just an adult anthro character being a lil indecent. And yet I feel like I'm going to get rocks thrown at me at any moment. Ugh.

Urgent help needed!

Okay so I know that I’ve been relying on the tumblr community a lot over the last couple of months for financial help since I quit my shitty abusive retail job (where I was routinely subject to sexual harassment and transphobic bullying by both customers and coworkers). The gig work hasn’t been working out for me (seemed good at first but then the algorithm just started giving me fewer and fewer deliveries to the point where I’m barely breaking even or sometimes even losing money going to work). I’ve sold off most of my comic, manga and dvd collections already and all of my physical copies of video games. In addition to my normal bills (groceries, gas, car insurance, etc) I’ve got my car registration due this month. It’s $200 if I can get it paid this month and closer to $300 if I have to do it after this month at which point my tags will be expired :/ please, any little bit at all helps!

HI HELLO EVERYONE. this is my first text post ever and basically the firsssst time I get to actually talk to people on here. SO…

A couple months or so passed since I joined Tumblr (tho I remember using it in 2014 to search for gifs of the series Skins… yikes), and I still don't really get how to use it properly and interact with this community.

The thing is, I've been using IG for years and years to share my illustrations and I've built a nice portfolio and a good network of colleagues and clients, but.. but. Lately (aside from recent developments with regards to Meta's shitty politics) that environment has become pretty damaging for my mental health: it's always a race to the top to achieve the most the fastest (don't get me wrong, I love seeing friends and colleagues doing cool stuff, I'm really proud of them!! but still), plus hate speech is popping up more and more and I find myself doom scrolling much more often because of it. And the algorithm is, weeeeeeell, a bit of a bitch. But the most mostly I CAN'T STAND THE NEW 4:5 GRID LAYOUT (IT'S NOT EVEN 4:5!!!) (WHO THE HELL IS THE UI/UX DIRECTOR AT META!!!!!!!)

Anyway, I've been looking for a better way to share my art (just for the joy of sharing it) and I hope I found it. It is so heartwarming to see you all interact with my posts and read all the kind words you go out of your way to write me. it's nice, really. 💕 I WANT TO THANK EVERYONE FROM THE BOTTOM OF MY HEART BUT IDK HOW SINCE I DON'T WANNA REPLY TO ALL INDIVIDUAL REBLOGS ASGDASDFSDHAJ I HOPE THIS MESSAGE REACHES U 💕

I think it's more we, all of us, live in an age of intention media and social siloing. We have blinders on, we put them on ourselves over years, we only go onto 2-3 web sites, get our news from one maybe two places and talk to people who already agree.

there are studies that show social media intentionally place negative stories in front of users because if you feel shitty you stay on-line scrolling. The traditional media is much the same, if it bleeds it leads, they've long been conditioned to view good news as basically boring and reporting on the good any administration does as serving as the White House's mouth piece

On top of which it's hard to escape the feeling that the media actively misses Trump. He was very good for business, meanwhile books on Biden's well functioning administration of people who get along and work well together are being straight up dropped by publishers because they think no one wants to read that. Trump had all the drama a reporter looking for a book deal could ever want.

All by way of saying Democrats are trying, or some of them are, but people choose not to look, and also social media isn't going to feed it to people by algorithm and the traditional media will at best cover It briefly in passing

also sadly for Tumblr everyone assumes we're dead. So no news organizations have active Tumblrs, no politicians or campaigns. Misinformation from other web pages, bots, and trolls have kinda free reign here

so I'm chugging along with my happy little counter programing because facts fucking matter (and it pisses some people off a lot lol)

Going to go a bit on a tangent, but I definitely wanted to talk about that post :-] Might get a bit sentimental from here.

Tumblr has definitely been a rocky hill for me to understand. I’m still trying to understand how to grow my artwork and reach more folks on this platform, but seriously, it’s been *real* difficult! A lot of artists like getting their hard work out there, but as it always is on social media, it can be real tough actually appealing to the algorithm and, in general, growing online. I think we can all agree social media can be pretty shitty, hah.

I’ve been posting art on social media for a decade, and only started taking it seriously around 2019? Definitely a really long time, I was only but a wee lad learning what Instagram was! Knowing what it’s like posting art online, it has its ups when you meet cool people and find cool people who like your art, and downs when things don’t really pick up as much as they used to. That, and the way social media makes you think differently about the way you make your art.

“What post is going to make the algorithm like me more?” “This artist with a bajillion followers is waay better than me.” “Why is this post not getting a lot of interactions?”

And yeah, in a way I’m calling myself out here BAHAHA! BUT STILL! Even when you put a lot of effort in your content, the algorithm isn’t going to always pick it up. Especially when it’s on Tumblr, where there isn’t *much* of an algorithm, I feel most folks have to rely on people actually engaging with their content and reblogging it. Even if yeah, the interactions you get don’t define your worth as an artist (AND BELIEVE ME THEY REALLY DON’T! People out there make genuinely GORGEOUS stuff and don’t get more than 2 likes!), it can suck not really getting anywhere. And over time (and I’m guilty of this for sure BAHA!), it can be easy to rely on em for validation.

I guess all the things you have to do to grow an audience (eg directly interacting with more people/starting conversations, making more art, getting your art out there in general) can be scary, stressful even. Take it from me, I never approach many people these days unless they’re actually someone that I can trust, and being an introvert online, I never approach folks unless they approach me. I usually just like quietly posting my art and seeing if anybody’s interested! And whenever people actually are, and whenever people tell me they appreciate my art, it makes my heart blossom. <3

You folks make my day lots, and they mean the whole world, even when it’s the smallest compliment on a new piece :-] I like screenshotting all the sweetest inbox messages, replies, reblogs, and Insta stories/comments people leave. At this point I should have an album for all of them, but my gallery is a mess LMAOOAJASO

Even if it’s harder now to get a post with good interactions nowadays, I’m genuinely thankful there’s even the smallest bit of people out there who love my art. Even the folks who read through my insanely long captions, or leave a small comment or message, make cool fanart, or just like my art in general! THE LIST GOES ON! Hugest most loveliest most incredible shoutout to all of you folks. Again, if I could give a hug to each and every 5k follower here, 8k on Insta? 13 THOUSAND PEOPLE IN TOTAL MAN!! 13 THOUSAND HUGS!! I'm not a nostalgic person, I've never been a nostalgic person. I actively hate nostalgia. I don't want to live my life chasing the past. But I feel like the internet is just constantly getting worse and less usable and less fun. I created an entire full time independant art job from social media and even though my work has improved astronomically in the last year, my posts don't even crack 1k anymore. I feel like every time Tumblr makes a comeback with the art community or fandom spaces the way it used to be in it's heyday, yet another shitty update renders everything unusable and bans artists from posting ANYTHING again. Numbers aren't everything, but with A.I I don't get commissioned the way I used to, I can't just follow someone without a thorough background check, and if I am not constantly churning out "content" (because my passion and profession has been reduced to mass marketable content rather than the skilled digital illustrations and hand crafted comics and month long animations that I pour my heart and soul into,) the algorithms punish me and followers don't see my posts anymore, not to mention no one knew has been following me in close to a year even though my work has improved so much. I am losing work opportunities, losing sleep, losing out on the fun fandom internet communities I used to be so involved in before 2018. The internet became the only place to have community during Quarantine in 2020 and was immediately destroyed by ads and A.I and NFT bullshit and mass marketable consumer friendly clean slate bullshit. Thank god the people who support my on patreon are genuine art lovers who support artists, because I am making half the money I was last year at conventions while also travelling to twice as many. I did 16 conventions in 2022, and made the same amount of money doing 21 conventions in 2023. I can't keep up with the constant travel and sleep deprivation, but what choice do I have? I miss the freedom of liking art and knowing someone created it out of passion. I don't have any hopeful end to my rant, I'm just so frustrated and angry and tired and all I want is to be appreciated for my craft rather than seen as a "content" machine.

This blog is specifically designed to fuck up AI “learning”. I created this blog to mess with AI, so that some of the data it gathers from tumblr will help it to “learn” things incorrectly, making AI generators unreliable.

The main reason that I do this is because I believe that the jobs that are being replaced by AI are NOT jobs that computers can do. Humans make art. Humans write. Those aren’t things that should be done by computers or algorithms. I also do it because it’s fun :)

I’m making this post now and pinning it to my profile because I’m worried that tagging all of my posts as “ai poison” or something along those lines will make them too easy to filter out. However, I still want it to be clear that I have good intentions when posting weird, bot-looking things, so from now on I’ll be directing people to read this post.

Actually no let’s dissect this new layout as someone who has used Twitter for a bit @staff listen up @wip @changes

I used Twitter for about a year because a lot of my mutuals at the time did, and you know what?

I hated the layout.

I didn’t like how I had to keep tabs on my friends because the algorithm would show me shitty stuff I wouldn’t want to see and was so hard to curate a feed

I’m fairly certain I ended up blocking a lot of people because they kept liking pictures of boobs and I didn’t want to see that shit and Twitter never let you turn that off

I ended up blocking people who kept getting recommended because their art made me sick and I didn’t want to see untagged nsfw on my feed

And the side bar sucked, it took me a while to figure out how to post in the first place

And don’t get me started about having a trending tab always right there and how it would set off my anxiety because every day it was just “here’s a new thing to make you want to jump off a cliff!”

Twitter and the way it works is designed to get hate clicks and engage on outrage, is that the method you want to follow?

Especially for a website who’s users are very loudly against that and also like privacy and will literally use outside resources to fix the ‘improvements’ you made because you didn’t think a toggle feature was worth it

Also putting the stuff on the left or right does not draw the eye, why? Because that’s where your hands are. Blocking the features you want to engage with. My eye is drawn up so putting your stuff there works best! It gets attention. Not to the right where my big ass hand is blocking the post button. (This is also why you should put the mobile post bubble back in the bar where it belongs but that’s a topic for another day)

I understand tumblr is in debt hell, but users have stated many times that if you just ask for donations like ao3 they’d be happy to donate

Hell, crab day was thrown around to be just like that.

Listen to your users or they will all leave for the websites you’re poorly emulating.

Tumblr is surviving because it offers an experience NO OTHER WEBSITE DOES

Taking that away just means tumblr is not unique, and users would rather try their luck with a website that’s doing this better.

Like Twitter, or tic tok, or Instagram.

Lean into your uniqueness and just ask for donations like an adult, just a little add that shows up in the add rotation that’s like “like what you see? Why not throw a dollar in the tip jar?” Like frame it like giving money to an artist so they can keep doing what you love, it’ll be charming!

Tumblr will not find success or even break even if you try and appeal to newcomers, every new social media is confusing to newbies, but you know what they do? They learn, and they adapt. And changing everything is going to make you loose legacy users who again, would LOVE TO DONATE MONEY TO KEEP THIS HELLSIGHT STANDING AS IS.

Or do you just not care about the users? The users who have the money you need.

I don’t want to watch tumblr die a slow and painful death like Twitter is.

And you know there’s something oddly poetic about tumblr, the quirky kid, tearing itself apart just to fit in with the popular kids which won’t work out and only lead to hollow friendships that can turn on a dime when you could have found meaningful relationships with the other weirdos who like your quirks and flaws and would have been ride or die for you.

But no we gotta be like Twitter so let’s chop off our arms and legs becsuse that’s what they’re doing

aw anon i truly deeply appreciate that! not many anons come back after an interaction like that, so it means a lot. we're all in different tumblr niches after all, our dashboards and the posts we see will always be different, so our perceptions of a certain community or behaviors within radfeminism or other leftist groups will vary greatly. algorithms work in weird, mysterious ways and the people we end up following can often represent the Community tm as a whole in our minds. i think it's also natural to be on edge whenever someone criticizes a marginalized community you're a part of, especially if you haven't seen that bad behavior much or you've seen super unjust judgements from people over very minor things. it's very human.

but imo thinking in extremes in general will always come back to bite ya in the end, and harm your movement & others. it's important to clean up your space when you notice smth is off, even if it's easier to shrug it off or it seems minor; what is minor to you might fester and actually harm another gyn, or some marginalized guy in a way that you personally might never face. that doesn't mean you don't have struggles too, or that the whole community you're a part of is responsible for a couple people's actions, but it is 100% up to us to maintain some healthy standards and loudly call out shitty bigoted and/or abusive things people do. including bio/cis women and transmasc folks. victims are still victims. marginalizations can still unfortunately be weaponized by abusers/bigots, as we've seen time and time again from abusive mothers, men of color, disabled men, racist white women, transmascs truly bigoted against transfems, etc.

as much as "all lives matter" and "not all men" gets super fucking annoying as a marginalized person or activist, and very often comes from bigoted rhetoric, the actual literal meaning rings true. some feminists do use feminist rhetoric to harm others. some female ppl do belittle female abuse against bio men and transfems. that doesn't mean misogyny is less important or anti-female abuse suddenly isn't the most common form of abuse statistics-wise. nuance is key, as usual. anyhow, thank you for coming back! i really appreciate it <3

Tumblr randomly goes through and deactivated blogs that post a lot of images/videos where there’s nudity (or what Tumblr’s algorithm says is nudity, even if there’s not). It’s why so many birth kink blogs get shut down. They can create a new one, but they’ll have to try to remember everyone’s screen name.

Do they have any say in reactivating it, is there an appeal process? Do they even get notified that its been shut down? I havent used this app since high school and don't really understand it. That's super shitty though.

So I’ve been posting during noon to night bc that’s when most of tumblr gets on.

Posting will now being strictly done during 5:00pm CST because i see that i get more notes when i post during those times and also i have a very small following (not ungrateful tho thank you all 🤗) so it matters even MORE when i post bc if i had a big following that problem would be out of the window.

Also about my one piece content (specifically my kobymeppo/meppokoby brainrot)

Not saying that I’ll stop posting about the paring but I will be posting less of it (no nothing wrong is going on dw)

I kinda want to focus more on “””normal””” one piece content and making fanart for that. my brainrot hasn’t died, and it won’t for a long time >:3
