Prince Mick stood next to his father King Michael as they watch the guest being announced but Prince Mick was looking for a certain girl to enter and his father could tell.
"Who are you looking for?" King Michael asks.
"No one." Prince Mick says.
"It's that girl in the forest, isn't it? That's why you were so generous with the invitations." King Michael states.
"Father, it was for the people." Prince Mick says.
"I know you love the people, Mick, but I also know that your head's been turned, you've only met her once, in the forest." King Michael says.
"And you'd have me marry someone once tonight." Prince Mick says.
"A Princess, it's a Princess or nothing." King Michael says.
"May I present her Royal Highness the Princess Chelina of Zaragosa." The Grand Duke says, The Princess held her hand out for the Prince and he gently kisses her hand.
"You are as handsome as your picture, and your little kingdom is enchanting." Princess Chelina says.
"I hope the Princess will not find our little kingdom too confining." Prince Mick says.
Marjolien arrives at the palace and the lizard footmen open the carriage doors.
"Miss Marjolien." The Lizard Footman says and extends his hand to help her off the carriage.
"Thank you." Marjolien says and looks up at the palace in awe. "I'm frightened, Mr. Lizard." Marjolien says.
"Oh." The Lizard footman says.
"I'm only a girl, not a princess." Marjolien says.
"And I'm only a lizard, not a footman, enjoy it while it lasts." The Lizard Footman says, Marjolien smiles and then with a breath of courage she starts making her way inside the palace, Marjolien enters the ballroom balcony and everyone looks up at her along with Prince Mick who smiles and turns to Princess Chelina.
"Excuse me." Prince Mick says and makes his way to Marjolien.
"A thousand apologies, Your Royal Highness, I don't know what happened." The Grand Duke says as Marjolien makes her way down the staircase with everyone's eyes on her, Prince Mick smiles at her as she reaches the bottom of the stairs, they walk towards each other.
"Mr. Mick." Marjolien says.
"It's you, isn't it?" Prince Mick asks.
"Just so." Marjolien says.
"Your highness, if I may, that is, it would give me the greatest pleasure, if you would do me the honour, of letting me lead you through this, the first..." Prince Mick stops and hesitates for a moment.
"Dance?" Marjolien asks.
"Yes, Dance." Prince Mick says and laughs. "That's it." He says, Marjolien nods her head and Prince Mick places one hand around her waist as they begin to dance, it felt absolutely amazing and it was like a spark went off when Mick placed his hand on her waist.
"They're all looking at you." Marjolien whispers.
"Believe me, they're all looking at you." Prince Mick says, everyone watches in amazement as they dance.
"Who is she?" Princess Chelina asks.
"I have no idea." The Grand Duke says, the guests give them an applause when they finish their dance, Prince Mick leads her off the dance floor and into a private room so they could talk without being disturbed.
"So you're the prince?" Marjolien asks.
"Well not 'the' prince exactly, there are a bunch of princes in the world, I'm only 'a' prince." Prince Mick says.
"But your name's not really Mick." Marjolien states.
"It is Mick." Prince Mick says.
"You're no apprentice." Marjolien says.
"I am an apprentice monarch, I'm still learning my trade." Prince Mick says.
"Oh, gosh." Marjolien says as several different emotions started to take over.
"Please forgive me, I thought you might treat me differently if you knew, I mistook you for a good honest country girl, Now I see you didn't want overwrought a plain soldier." Prince Mick says.
"Little chance of that." Marjolien says.
"No more surprises?" Mick asks extending his hand to Marjolien.
"No more surprises." Marjolien says as she takes his hand, she notices a painting of him. "Is that you?" She asks walking past him, Prince Mick turns to watch her.
"I hate myself in paintings, don't you?" Prince Mick says making Marjolien laugh.
"No one's ever painted my portrait." Marjolien says.
"No? well, they should." Prine Mick says. "Come, I wish to show you the gardens."
"Won't they miss you at the ball?" Marjolien asks as Prince Mick leads her outside the palace and towards the gardens.
"Maybe, but let's not go back just yet." Prince Mick says, as they walk through the garden Marjolien could sense something was wrong with Prince Mick.
"What's wrong?" Marjolien asks.
"When I go back they will try to pair me off with a lady of their choosing, I'm expected to marry for advantage." Mick says.
"Oh, well, who's advantage?" Marjolien asks.
"That's a good question." Prince Mick says.
"Well, surely you have a right to your own heart?" Marjolien asks.
"I must weigh that against the King's wishes, he's a wise ruler and a loving father." Prince Mick says.
"Well, perhaps he'll change his mind." Marjolien says, Prince Mick watches her carefully hesitating to answer her.
"I fear he hasn't much time to do so." Prince Mick says, he lets out a sigh. "I've never shown this place to anyone." He says trying to change the subject, he opens a door to a secret garden.
"A secret garden! Oh, I love it." Marjolien says and walks over to the swing.
"Please." Prince mick says gesturing to the swing.
"Oh, I shouldn't." Marjolien says.
"You should." Prince Mick says.
"I shouldn't." Marjolien says.
"You should." Prince Mick says a smile appears on his face.
"I shouldn't." Marjolien says.
"You should." He says, she gives him a smile.
"I will." She says accepting that this is not a battle she will win, she takes a seat on the swing as Prince Mick stands behind her.
"May I?" Prince Mick asks.
"Please." Marjolien says and Prince Mick gently pushes her on the swing, as he swings her one of her glass slippers fall.
"It's made of glass." Prince Mick states as he picks it up.
"And why not?" Marjolien asks.
"Allow me." Prince Mick says.
"Thank you." Marjolien says, Prince Mick kneels down in front of her and gently lifts the bottom of her dress and places the slipper back on her foot.
"There." Prince Mick says.
"There." Marjolien repeats and stood up from the swing, Prince Mick stood up from the ground and pulls her closer to him.
"Won't you tell me who you really are?" Prince Mick asks.
"If I do I think everything might be different." Marjolien says.
"I don't understand, can you at least tell me your name?" Prince Mick asks.
"My name is..." Marjolien begins but just then she hears the bell signalling it's midnight rings, her eyes widen in fear. "I have to leave, it's hard to explain, Lizards and pumpkins and things." Marjolien says before suddenly taking off
"Wait! Where are you going?" Prince Mick asks, Marjolien looks back at Prince Mick.
"You've been awfully nice, thank you for a wonderful evening, I've loved it, every second of it." Marjolien says and turns around and rushes off again, Prince Mick sits down on the swing looking baffled.
"Lizards and pumpkins?" Prince Mick says, he smiles to himself and decides to follow her.
Marjolien rushes through the ballroom dance floor.
"Oh, excuse me, sorry, terribly sorry." Marjolien apologises as she bumps into the guests.
"Oh, your highness!" The Grand Duke says, As Prince Mick follows behind Marjolien on the dance floor Anastasia sees an opportunity and grabs Prince Mick and pulls him to the dance floor.
"My Prince!" Anastasia says.
"Oh, how do you do?" Prince Mick asks not wanting to be rude.
"You've got the wrong one! You've got the wrong one!" Drisella shouts, Marjolien makes her way up the stairs.
"He needs her name!" One of the Royal Crier's assistant shouts as they begin chasing after Marjolien.
"I know he needs her name!" The other assistant says.
"Her name, you Niiny! her name!" The Royal Crier shouts, he bangs his head on the stairwell arch as he goes after Marjolien, as Marjolien is about to leave the ballroom she bumps into the King.
"Oh, your Majesty." Marjolien says.
"Young lady." King Michael says.
"Oh, I'm so sorry." Marjolien says and curtsies.
"Oh, think nothing of it, my dear." King Michael says, Marjolien moves past him.
"I wanted to say, Your Majesty, your son Mick is the most lovely person I ever met, so kind and brave, I hope you know how much he loves you, excuse me." Marjolien says as fast as she could before rushing away, As Marjolien flees down the stairs at the palace exit one of her glass slippers fall off from her foot.
"Wait!" Prince Mick says as Marjolien turned to pick up her slipper. "Wait, where are you going?" Prince Mick asks, deciding to leave her slipper behind she rushes to the carriage.
"Hurry! hurry!" Marjolien says loudly waking the Lizard footmen that were sleeping.
"Come back!" Prince Mick says, Marjolien climbs into the carriage.
"Hurry! hurry, please Mr Goose." Marjolien says, the carriage takes off in a rush.
"Wait!" Prince Mick says but only saw the carriage disappearing in the distance, he looks down and saw the glass slipper on the step, he picks it up and smiles to himself. "Captain, my horse!" Prince Mick says.
"No, this may be some trick to lure you from the palace, your father needs you here." The Grand Duke says.
"I was having a fine old time, you had to go and choose that one, didn't you?" The Cpatain asks and walks off with the Grand Duke.
"Yes, I did." Prince Mick says to himself, the Grand Duke and the Captain follow Marjolien at the same time the clock continues to strike for midnight.
"Hurry, Mr. Goose." Marjolien says.
"Come on." Goose Coachman says to the horses.
"Be careful, Mr. Goose." Marjolien says as they nearly topple over the cliff's edge. "Oh, my goodness."
"You there! Stop in the name of the King!" The Grand Duke shouts as they chase after the carriage.
"Such bad timing." Marjolien mumbles to herself, the Lizards start to grow back their tails.
"I know what to do!" The Lizard Footman says, he uses his tail to drawn down the iron fence and stop the Grand Duke and his guards from chasing them.
"Get this thing open!" The Grand Duke says, as the clock is getting near to its last strike everything starts transforming to their normal state.
"Oh, dear." The Goose Coachman says.
"Oh, no!" Marjolien says, she watches as the lizards and the goose transform back to normal. "No, no, no, no." She says, she watches as the pumpkin shrinks and lets out a sigh. "No, no." She whisper, she slowly starts walking back home with the mice following her, she stops and bends down taking off her glass slipper. "Oh, I'm sorry." She says and allows them to climb into her glass slipper. "You'll find it's very comfortable." She says and laughs to herself as it starts to rain.
Marjolien makes it back home just as Lady Tremaine and the girls arrive home.
"Marjolien!" Lady Tremaine shouts.
"Wake up, lazybones!" Drisella shouts, they walk into the kitchen and saw Marjolien. "Tea and a plate of biscuits."
"Welcome back." Marjolien says cheerfully.
"You look cheerful." Anastasia says.
"And wet." Drisella says.
"Oh, I took a walk in the rain to cheer myself up." Marjolien says.
"Typical." Anastasia mumbles.
"Tea." Marjolien says and begins preparing their tea and biscuits.
"We did not communicate through mere words, our souls met." Drisella says to Marjolien.
"Precisely my soul and the Prince's soul." Anastasia says. "Your soul was  over by the banquet tables." Anastasia says, Marjolien places the tea and biscuits down at the table.
"You didn't see him dance with me." Drisella says.
"Dance with you? He didn't even speak to you." Lady Tremaine states.
"It was not our fault, mother, it was that girl!" Anastasia says.
"The mystery princess." Drisella says.
"Mystery princess? why, what a charming notion." Marjolien says.
"Oh, she was no princess, she was a preening interloper who made a spectacle of herself." Lady Tremaine says.
"Oh?" Marjolien softly says.
"A vulgar young hussy marched into the ball, unaccompanied if you will, and to the horror of everyone threw herself at the Prince." Lady Tremaine says, Marjolien goes to get more teat when she starts swaying to herself as she remembers her dance with Prince Mick.
"And he actually danced with the ugly thing." Anastasia says.
"Yes?" Marjolien questions.
"Yes." Drisella says, Lady Tremaine looks suspiciously at Marjolien as she continues to sway.
"It was pity, he was too polite to send her packing in front of everyone, you see, but not wanting to expose us to the presumptuous wench any further, he took her apart." Drisella says.
"And told her off, but she refused to leave and the palace guards chased her from the party." Anastasia says as they tell their own version of the story. "I pity the prince, such bad taste."
"They belong with each other." Drisella says.
"Mh." Anastasia hums.
"Well, it's no matter, girls, the ball was a mere diversion, the Prince is not free to marry for love, he's promised to the Princess Chelina of Zaragosa, Grand Duke told me himself." Lady Tremaine says.
"It's so very unfair." Anastasia says.
"Yes, the way of the world." Lady Tremaine says.
Once everyone went off the bed and Marjolien finished her cleaning she went to her room in the attic, she finds the mice under the floorboards where she's hidden a box of her parent's things.
"Oh, hello again." Marjolien says, she places the glass slipper in the box. "Thank you for your help, it really was like a dream, better than a dream." Marjolien says and grabs her notebook, she begins writing down in excitement as if she were telling her mother and father about the palace ball and her time with Prince Mick.
Prince Mick walks into his father's chambers where he's lying in bed sick.
"Oh, you've come. Good." King Michael says.
"Oh, father, don't go." Prince Mick says.
"I must, You needn't be alone, take a bride, the Princess Chelina." King Michael says, Prince Mick doesn't respond. "What if I commanded you to do so." King Michael asks.
"I love and respect you, but I will not. I believe that we need not look outside of our borders for strength or guidance, what we need is right before us, and we only have courage and be kind to see it." Prince Mick says.
"Just so, you've become your own man, good, and perhaps with the little time left to me, I could become the father you deserve, you must not marry for advantage, you must marry for love, find that girl, find her, go on, they're all talking about the forgetful one who loses her shoes." King Michael says causing the to chuckle. "Oh, be cheerful, boy."
"Thank you, father." Prince Mick says.
"Thank you, son." King Michael says.
"I love you father." Prince Mick says.
Weeks passed and King Michael was no longer with the Kingdom and his son had to take the crown of being King, once the time for mourning had passed a proclamation was sent out.
"Hear ye! Hear ye! Hear ye!" The Royal Crier shouts in the town center. "Know that our new King hereby declares his love for the mysterious princess as wore glass slipper to the ball, and requests that she presents herself at the palace whereupon, if she be willing, he will forthwith, marry her with all due ceremony." The Royal Crier shouts, the crowd murmurs with shock while Marjolien smiles to herself before riding off back home to collect her glass slipper.
Marjolien rushes to her room in the attic to collect the slipper hidden beneath the floorboards but discovers it's not there, Lady Tremaine sat in the shadows holding the slipper in her hand.
"Are you looking for this?" Lady Tremaine asks shocking Marjolien, she spins around and looks at Lady Tremaine. "There must be quite a story go with it, won't you tell me? No? Alright then, I shall tell you a story, once upon a time, there was a beautiful young girl who married for love and she had two loving daughters, all was well, but one day her husband, the light of her life, died. The next time she married for the sake of her daughters, but that man too was taken from her and she was doomed to look every day upon his beloved child, she had hoped to marry off one of her beautiful stupid daughters to the Prince, but his head was turned, by a girl with glass slippers and so, I lived unhappily ever after, my story would appear to be ended, now, tell me yours, did you steal it?" Lady Tremaine asks out for blood, she was furious with Marjolien.
"It was given to me." Marjolien says softly.
"Given to you" Given to you? Nothing is ever given, for everything you must pay, pay!" Lady Tremaine says standing up from the bed she was sitting on.
"That's not true! Kindness is free, love is free." Marjolien says.
"Love is not free!" Lady Tremaine says and slowly makes her way towards Marjolien. "Now, here is how you will pay me, if you were to have what you desire, no one will believe you, a dirty servant girl without a family if you lay claim to the Prince's heart, but with a respectable gentlewoman to put you forward, you will not be ignored, when you are married you will make me the head of the royal household, Anastasia and Drisella we will pair off with wealthy lords and I shall manage that boy." Lady Tremaine says.
"But he's not a boy!" Marjolien defends Prince Mick.
"And who are you? How would you rule the kingdom? Best to leave it to me, that way we all get what we want." Lady Tremaine says and begins to leave.
"No." Marjolien says, Lady Tremaine looks at Marjolien.
"No?" Lady Tremaine repeats.
"I was not able to protect my father from you, but I will protect the Prince and the Kingdom, no matter what becomes of me." Marjolien says.
"Well, that is a mistake." Lady Tremaine says and smashes the slipper against the wall shattering it to pieces.
"No! why? Why are you so cruel? I don't understand it, I've tried to be kind to you." Marjolien says.
"You kind to me?" Lady Tremaine questions.
"Yes! I know no one deserves to be treated as you have treated me, why do you do it? why?!" Marjolien asks loudly.
"Why? Because you are young and innocent and good, and I..." Lady Tremaine stops herself and turns around and walks out of the attic closing the door behind her, Marjolien rushes towards the door.
"No, no, no." Marjolien says in a panic as Lady Tremaine locks Marjolien in the attic.
Lady Tremaine takes the remains of the glass slipper to the Grand Duke.
"May I ask where you got this?" The Grand Duke asks taking the piece of glass.
"From a ragged servant girl in my household." Lady Tremaine says.
"The Mystery princess is a commoner." The Grand Duke states.
"You can imagine when I discovered her subterfuge how horrified I was." Lady Tremaine says,
"You've told no one else?" The Grand Duke asks.
"Not even my own daughters." Lady Tremaine says, The Grand Duke chuckles. "No one need ever know the truth." Lady Tremaine says.
"You've spared the Kingdom a great deal of embarrassment." The Grand Duke says.
"And I should ike to keep it that way." Lady Tremaine threatens.
"Are you threatening me?" the Grand Duke asks.
"Yes." Lady Tremaine says, they both chuckle.
"So what do you want?" The Grand Duke asks.
"I should like to be a countess, and I require advantageous marriages for my two daughters." Lady Tremaine says.
"Done, and the girl?" The Grand Duke asks.
"Oh, do with her what you will, she's nothing to me." Lady Tremaine says.
The Grand Duke shows the remains of the glass slipper to newly crowned King, King Mick.
"Where?" King Mick asks as he takes the remains of the slipper.
"Abandoned on the side of the road." The Grand Duke says.
"And have you found her?" King Mick asks.
"The girl? No, she's disappeared." The Grand Duke says.
"There must be some reason she vanished, Perhaps she has been prevented from speaking." King Mick says.
"Do not lose heart yet." The Captain says.
"On the contrary, lose heart and gain wisdom, the people need to know that the kingdom is secure, that the King has a queen and that the land may have an heir, they want to face the future with certainty." the Grand Duke says.
"Agreed, then let us be certain! I am King, I say we shall seek out the mystery Princess, even if she does not want to be found, I have to see her again." King Mick says.
"But if she is not found, then for the good of the kingdom, you must marry the Princess Chelina, for the good of the kingdom." The Grand Duke says, King Mick sits down on his throne and looks at the piece of glass slipper for a moment.
"Very well, agreed." King Mick agrees.
"But, your highness?" The Captain says, King Mick looks at the Captain with determination. "But you will spare no effort."
"Your Majesty, of course, you have my word." The Grand Duke says and turns around as a wicked smile forms on his face.

The long farewell
Up again this morning to meet the group for our last ride. My intention was to turn off after about an hour and head home to do some washing in preparation for our departure. Marjolien also turned up this morning and said she’d turn with me, which for both of us was probably just as well as today was going to be a fast ride (still can’t fathom how they decide when they’re going fast or slow).
So we set off and it wasn’t too bad though maintaining that pace after an 80km ride yesterday did eventually start to take its toll. Around the 30km mark we found ourselves in the same village where we turned off when Maz was with us. Perfect we left the group and headed off to the same bar for coffee.
Unfortunately it’s closed on a Sunday but with the help of a nice local man we found an open bar and had our coffee. I still had thoughts of getting home early to get on with our washing but Marjolien had other plans. We took a different route to the one we did with Marion, which was pretty much the same way we came home last Sunday. Marjolien was convinced she knew a short cut so we ended up in a village where the road pretty much ends (with good reason) and unless we took the long route we needed mountain bikes.
In our quest to find an alternate route we ended up speaking to a bearded fellow smoking weed. I thankfully hadn’t focused on his T-shirt but as we cycled off Marjolien was convinced we’d stumbled upon some kind of sect. They would have seen us coming a mile off two blonde, English speaking women clearly lost. We were both thankful this didn’t happen last week when Marion was with us, she would never have come out with us again! Finally we were back in L’Escala after the group - oh well it had been a pleasant and somewhat interesting ride.
This afternoon I still managed to get three loads of washing done and a few other packing bits and pieces before we headed into town to meet up with Marjolien and Martjens. We had 4 more tapas to go but it seemed to have really already wound up so we only managed one more - lesson learnt for next year.
We still managed to get to about 4 bars and eat plenty of tapas before Marjolien and Martjens had to get their boys home ready for school tomorrow. We then went to Cal Galan, one of our favourites for dinner. They know us now so we said goodbye until we’re back again in January.
Back home now quite full and writing the blog before falling into bed.

Thank you Marjolien! 💚
37. favourite actor/actress
Angela Bassett, Meryl Streep, Maggie Smith, Dylan O'Brien, Emma Watson. I'm probably forgetting a few, but these were the first that came to my mind
45. how you found out about your idol
I first saw Emma Watson in the harry potter movies and started following her on social media. But the reason she is my idol is because of everything she did after that. Her fighting for womens rights and much more. When I see her I always see a strong and kind woman who isn't afraid to speak up and I love that about her
50. favourite picture of your idol
I don't really have a favourite picture

••••
Marjolien lays next to her mother on the bed knowing how sick her mother was, the doctor's could not find a cure and she could go at any moment, so Marjolien spent most of her time with her mother in the bedroom before she would no longer be with them.
"Marojlien, my darling, I want to tell you a secret, a great secret that will see you through all the trials that life can offer. you must always remember this, have courage and be kind, you have more kindness in your little fingers than most people possess in their whole body, and it has power, more than you know. and Magic." Her mother says.
"Magic?" 10 year old Marjolian asks.
"Truly, have courage and be kind, my darling. Will you promise me?" She asks.
"I promise." Marjolien says as tears begin building up.
"Good." Her mother says. "I must go very soon, my love. Please forgive me." She asks her child.
"Of course, I forgive you." Marjolien says, her mother pulls her close and holds her as she cries, Marjolien's father puts his arms around them both.
"I love you." Her mother whispers.
"I love you, my darling." Her father says.
"I love you." Her mother says once again.
As the time passed the pain of losing her mother became memories but the promise she made was still fresh in her mind 'have courage and be kind', one morning Marjolien was sitting at the table with her father reading one of her favourite books as her father sipped on warm tea, trying to think of a way to tell his daughter of the happiness he has found in the past few days.
"Marojlien, I've come to the conclusion that it's time perhaps to begin a new chapter." Her father says.
"Indeed, father." Marjolien says looking up at him closing her book.
"You recall that some time ago in my travels I made the acquaintance of Sir Francis Tremaine." Her father says.
"Yes, the master of the Mercy's guild, is he not?" She asks.
"Was, the poor man has died alas, his widow, an honourable woman, finds herself alone, though still in the prime of her life." Her father says.
"You're worried about telling me, but you mustn't be, not if it will lead to your happiness." Marjolien says with a wide smile.
"Yes, happiness. Do you think I may be allowed one last chance? even though I thought such things were done for good?" Her father asks.
"Of course I do, father!" Marjolien says happy for her father, she got up from her chair and wrapped her arms around her father.
"She'll really be your stepmother, and you'll have two lovely sisters to keep you company." He says, Marjolien pulls back from the hug and sits down on the chair once again, listening as her father told her about Lady Tremaine and her two daughters, days passed since the mention of Lady Tremaine and her daughters before Marjolien officially met them but as much as she tried to treat them with kindness she was met with rudeness, her new stepsisters barely spoke to her and if they did they ordered her around while Lady Tremaine only sat back and watched.
But Marjolien wasn't going to destroy her father's happiness and tell him about how awful she was being treated and kept quiet, but soon it came time for her father to once again leave for business again and that was when her stepmother showed her true colours and took advantage of Marjolien's kindness and made her live in the attic, making her believe that it was out of the kindness of her own heart that she offered up her own room so her stepsisters could have a bigger bedroom.
The days passed by slowly and turned into weeks and weeks turned into months since her father had left for business, but she always kept in contact with him sending letters to him and receiving letters from him, all was going well until late one afternoon when Marjolien opened the front door and greeted Farmer John.
"Farmer John?" Marjolien greets as Lady Tremaine and her daughters stand behind Marjolien to listen in on the conversation.
"Miss Marjolien, it's your father, Miss Marjolien, he took ill on the road, he's passed on, Miss, he's gone." Farmer John says, Marjolien could feel a lump building in her throat. "Till the end he spoke only of you, Miss, and your mother, I was to give you this." Farmer John says holding out the branch she had asked her father for, Marjolien takes the branch shakily.
"Well, what about my lace?" Anastasia asks rudely.
"My parasol." Drisella says dramatically.
"Can't you see, none of that matters, we're ruined! How will we live?" Lady Tremaine says clearly upset, she turns around and walks off trying to figure out what to do now, Anastasia and Drisella let's out a huff before leaving to their room, Marjolien looks at Farmer John with tears in her eyes.
"Thank you, it must have been very difficult for you." Marjolien says and closes the door, she turns around and looks at the branch before sinking to the floor, weeping, first her mother and now her father, how indeed to live? Economies had to be taken and so Lady Tremaine dismissed the household servants, as days passed all responsibilities were passed onto Marjolien to distracts her from the grief, or so Lady Tremaine told her and she and her two daughters were more than happy to provide Marjolien with lots and lots of distractions.
Marjolien had to wash their clothes, clean their shoes, clean the house including their rooms, which was always a mess, and cook for them, she became less of a family member to them and more as a servant for them, but in their defence, they did share with her the very food they ate, or rather the scraps from their table, she had little in the way of friends, well, her friends were very little, but those friends she had, she treated with an open heart and an open hand.
"Oh, there you are! have dinner with me, won't you?" Merjolien asks and places a cup upside down on the floor with a napkin to cover it in front of the mice. "A table." She says and shares the little bit of food she was given with them, sometimes, by the end of the day the drafty attic was too cold to spend the night in, so she lay by the dying embers of the hearth to keep her warm.
Marjolien was suddenly awoken by the servant bells ringing in her ears, the ash from the fireplace covers her face as she does the morning chores before Lady Tremaine would arrive along with her two daughters.
"I thought breakfast was ready." Lady Tremaine says entering the dining room.
"Is it, Madam, I'm only mending the fire." Marjolien says.
"Oh, in future can it not be cold until the work is done?" Lady Tremaine asks.
"As you wish." Marjolien quietly says, Lady Tremaine stares at Marjolien before finally asking.
"Marjolien, what's that on your face?" Lady Tremaine asks.
"Madam?" Marjolien says not sure what she was talking about.
"It's ash from the fireplace." Anastasia says getting into Marjolien's personal space.
"Do clean yourself up." Lady Tremaine says.
"You'll get cinders in our tea." Anastasia says.
"I've got a new name for her, Cinder wench!" Drisella says.
"She looks so dirty, oh, dirty Marjolien!" Anastasia says making herself laugh as well as Lady Tremaine, barely having time to clean herself she was ordered to set the table and so she did including a plate for herself, which did not go unnotice by Lady Tremaine.
"Who's this for? Is thee someone we've forgotten?" Lady Tremaine asks.
"It's my place." Marjolien says.
"Oh, it seems too much to expect to prepare breakfast, serve it and still sit with us, wouldn't you prefer to eat when all the word is done, Marjolien?" Lady Tremaine says, Marjolien picks up her plate visibly upset and leaves as Lady Tremaine laughs with cruelty, as she enters the kitchen the plate falls from her hands and breaks on the floor, she lets out a sob and sinks down to her knees to clean up the broken plate as she glances up she sees her reflection in the kettle.
Ash and dirt covered her entire face and in sudden realization dawned on her, her stepmother and stepsisters had indeed transformed her into merely a creature of ash a toil, in despair, Marjolien rides her horse into the woods and comes across a massive stag, which seems to have frightened her horse.
"Woah, woah." Marjolien tries to calm her horse, she stares at the stag in wonder when she suddenly hears the sound of men hunting. "Run, quickly, my friend or they'll catch you, go!" Marjolien says to the stag, the stag suddenly turns and takes off and Marjolien's horse follows behind. "Oh, easy!" Marjolien says to her horse trying to stop him.
Prince Mick was riding with the hunting party when his eyes land on Marjolien riding fast on her horse trying to the horse down.
"Easy, easy! woah, woah, easy, boy, come on, boy, slow down." Marjolien tried, Prince Mick steers his horse towards her to help her.
"Miss! Miss, are you alright? hold on!" Prince Mick says
"I'm alright, thank you, I'm fine." Marjolien says, but was far from fine, Mick rides beside her and helped slow her horse down.
"Woah, woh, woh." Prince Mick says in a calming voice, Marjolien's horse finally slows down and comes to a full stop, Prince Mick looks at Marjolien. "Are you alright?" Prince Mick asks.
"I'm alright, but you nearly frightened the life out of him!" Marjolien says upset.
"Who?" Prince Mick asks confused.
"The stag! What's he ever done to you that you should chase him about?" Marjolien asks causing Prince Mick to chuckle.
"I must confess, I've never met him before, he is a friend of yours?" Prince Mick asks.
"An acquaintance? We met just now, I looked into his eyes and he looked into mine and I just felt he had a great deal to do with his life, that's all." Marjolien says.
"Miss, what do they call you?" Prince Mick asks.
"Never mind what they call me." Marjolien says.
"You shouldn't be this deep in the forest alone." Prince Mick says.
"I'm not alone, I'm with you. Mr...? What do they call you?" Marjolien asks, Prince Mick laughs thinking the was joking.
"You don't know who I am?" Prince Mick asks, Marjolien shakes her head 'no'." That is, they call me Mick, well, my father does, when he's in a good mood." Prince Mick says causing them to laugh gently.
"And where do you live, Mr. Mick?" Marjolien asks.
"At the palace, my father is teaching me his trade." Prince Mick says.
"You're an apprentice!" Marjolien says!
"Of a sort." Prince Mick says.
"That's very fine, do they treat you well?" Marjolien asks curiously.
"Uh, better than I deserve most likely, and you?" Prince Mick asks.
"They treat me as well as they're able." Marjolien says as her smile falls.
"I'm sorry." Prince Mick says.
"It's not your doing." Marjolien says.
"Nor yours either I'll bet." Prince Mick says.
"It's not so very bad, Others have it worse, I'm sure. We must simply have courage and be kind, musn't we?" Marjolien asks.
"Yes." Prince Mick says as a smile grows on his face. "You're right, that's exactly how I feel." He says, they hear the hunting party approaching.
"Please don't let them hurt him." Marjolien says.
"But we're hunting, you see, it's what's done." Prince Mick says.
"Just because it's what's done, doesn't mean it's what should be done." Marjolien says hoping to convince him.
"Right again." Prince Mick says.
"Well then, you'll leave him alone, won't you?" Marjolien asks being hopeful.
"I will." Prince Mick says.
"Thank you very much, Mr. Kit." Marjolien says, they're interrupted by the Captain.
"Ah, there you are, your highne..." The Captain was cut off by Prince Mick.
"It's Mick! Mick! Mick! I'm Mick! I'm on my way." Prince Mick says quickly becoming panicked that Marjolien would find out the truth and treat him differently.
"Well, we've better get a move on, Mr. Mick." The Captain says playing along.
"As I said, on my way." Prince Mick says, Marjolien smiles at Prince Mick as he goes to leave. "I hope to see you again, Miss." Prince Mick says.
"And I, you." Marjolien says, Prince Mick smiles at her before riding off. "Come on, boy." Marjolien says to her horse and rides off in the opposite direction.
Two days had passed since Marjolien had met Prince Mick and she couldn't stop thinking about him ever since, today she was in town to gather some needed things for home and met up with her friend that once worked in her home.
"You don't look well, miss, not at all, why do you stay there when they treat you so?" Her friend asks.
"Because I made my mother and father a promise to cherish the place we were so happy, they loved our house and now that they're gone, I love it for them. It's my home." Marjolien says.
"Hear ye! hear ye!" The Royal Crier shouted interrupting everyone in town, a dog begins to bark. "Quiet!" The Roal Crier hisses, he opens the scroll in his hands. "Know on this day, two weeks hence, there shall be held at the palace a royal ball, at said ball, in accordance with ancient custom, the Prince shall choose a bride, furthermore, at the behest of the Prince, it is hereby declared that every maiden in the kingdom, be she noble or commoner, is invited to attend, such is the command of our most noble King." The crowd gasps in shock and excitement.
Marjolien knew this was her chance to go and see Kit again, she rushed back home to inform Lady Tremaine of the news in hopes she would be allowed to attend, as she arrived home she quickly shared the news with her stepmother while her stepsisters listened in carefully.
"I shall trick him into loving me! See if I don't!" Anastasia says confidently.
"This is the most hugest news!" Drisella says.
"Calm yourselves, now listen to me, one of you must win the heart of the Prince, do that, and we can unwind the debt in which we're ensnared when we came to this backwater." Lady Tremaine says already working on a plan.
"I a Princess!" Drisella says already fantasizing herself with a crown on her head.
"Or rather I a princess!" Anastasia says making her sister frown, Lady Tremaine looks at Marjolien and frowns.
"Havig delivered your news, why are you still here? You must return to town right away and tell that seamstress to run us up three fine ball gowns." Lady Tremaine says.
"Three? But that's very thoughtful of you." Marjolien says thankful that her stepmother remembered her.
"What do you mean?" Lady Tremaine asks.
"To think of me." Marjolien says.
"Think of you?" Lady Tremaine questions.
"Mummy, she believes the other dress is for her, poor slow little Marjolien, how embarrassing." Drisella says, Lady Tremaine bursts out laughing.
"Oh, you're too ambitious for your own good." Lady Tremaine says.
"Oh, no. I only want to see my friend." Marjolien says.
"Let me be very clear, one gown for Anastasia, one for Drisella and one for me. La mode Parisian." Lady Tremaine says.
"She doesn't know what that means." Anastasia says, Marjolien replies back in fluent French shocking Lady Tremaine.
"Good, right, that's settled then, now, go! every girl in the kingdom will be chasing the Prince, you must get there first before the seamstress is drowning in work!" Lady Tremaine demands.
As the day of the ball arrived Marjolien was ordered to help Anastasia and Drisella get dressed, after helping her stepsisters Marjolien went to the attic to finish her dress and then get ready for the ball herself, she quickly rushed to be finished on time so she could leave with her stepmother and stepsisters, as Lady Tremaine and her stepsisters were about to leave Marjolien walks down the stairs in the dress she made for herself.
"Marjolien." Lady Tremaine says in disgust.
"It cost you nothing, it was my mother's old dress, you see, and I took it out myself." Marjolein says.
"No one wants a servant as a bride!" Drisella says.
"After all I've done..." Lady tremaine begins becoming angry.
"I don't want to ruin anything, I don't even want to meet the Prince." Marjolien tries to reason.
"Oh, and you won't, cause there's no question of you going." Lady Tremaine says.
"But all of the maidens of the land are invited, by order of the King." Marjolien defends.
"It is the King I'm thinking og, it would be an insult to the royal personage to take you to the palace in these old rags." Lady Tremaine fires back.
"Rags? This was my mothers." Marjolien says, Lady Tremaine, Anastasia and Driselle walks closer to Marjolien.
"Oh, sorry to have to tell you, but your mother's taste was questionable, this thing is so old-fashioned it's practically falling to pieces." Lady Tremaine says and rips one shoulder from the dress. "Oh, the shoulder's frayed." Drisella rips the front lace off from the dress. "It's falling to bits." Lady Tremaine says.
"It's a ridiculous old-fashioned joke." Drisella says, Lady Tremaine laughs while tears form in Marjolien's eyes.
"How could you?" Marjolien asks.
"How could I otherwise? I will not have anyone associate y daughters with you, it would ruin their prospects to be seen arriving with a ragged servant girl, because that is what you are, and that what you will always be, now mark my words, you shall not go to the ball." Lady Tremaine says threateningly.
After watching the carriage ride off with Lady Tremaine, Anastasia and Drisella, Marjolien ran to the back of the house and kneels down in the garden and begins to cry.
"I'm sorry, mother, I'm sorry, I said I'd have courage, but I don't! not anymore, I don't believe anymore!" Marjolein says, an older woman approaches Marjolien.
"Excuse me, can you help me, miss. just a little crust of bread, or a cup of milk." Marjolien's fairy godmother asks.
"Yes, yes, yes, I think I can find something for you." Marjolein says and goes into the house to get some milk, her fairy godmother follows her.
"Why are you crying?" Fairy Godmother asks.
"Oh, it's nothing." Marjolien says.
"Nothing? nothing." Fairy Godmother says, Marjolien gives the bowl of milk to her fairy godmother. "What of the bowl of milk? nothing, but kindness makes everything." She says and gulps down the milk, the older woman lets out a burp causing Marjolien to laugh. "Now, I don't mean to hurry you but you really haven't got long, Marjolein."
"How do you know me? who are you?" Marjolien asks becoming a little worried.
"Who am I? I should think you'd have worked that one out." Fairy Godmother says, Marjolien looks confused. "I'm your hairy dogfather, I mean Fairy godmother!" Fairy Godmother says.
"You can't be." Marjolien says.
"Why not?" Fairy Godmother asks.
"They don't exist, they're just made up for children." Marjolien says.
"Didn't your own mother believe in them? don's say no because I heard her." Fairy Godmother says.
"You heard?" Marjolien asks.
"Oh, fiddle-faddle, fiddle-faddle, right, first things first, let me slip into something more comfortable." Fairy Godmother says and throws her stick into the air and it transforms into a glass warn and sprinkles magic fust onto her transforming her into her true form. "Oh, that's better." Marjolien looks at her in shock. "Now, where was I?"
"How did you...?" Marjolien couldn't finish her sentence.
"Oh, yes, let's see. what we need is something that sort os says 'coach.'" Fairy Godmother says, they look around.
"um, oh, that trough?" Marjolien suggests.
"Doesn't really say 'coach', no, no, no, I'm likig fruit and veg." Fairy Godmother says. "Do you grow watermelons?" She asks.
"No." Marjolien answers.
"Cantaloupe?" Fairy Godmother asks.
"I don't even know what that is." Marjolien says.
"Artichoke?" Fairy Godmother asks, Marjolein shakes her head. "Kumquat?" Marjolien once again shakes her head. "Beef tomato?"
"We do have pumpkins." Marjolien says.
"Ah." Fairy Godmother says, Marjolien guides her fairy godmother to the pumpkins. "Pumpkin, this will be a first for me. always interersting, I don't usually work with squashes, too mushy." Fair godmother says, they enter the greenhouse. "Let me see." She looks around and spots the right size pumpkin. "Ah, that'll do, yes, knife!" Marjolien hands her a garden knife.
"There you are." Marjolien says.
"Thank you, darling." Fairy Godmother says and hands her wand to Marjolein. "Hello, my strangely orange vegetable friend, a quick snip for you." Fairy godmother says to the pumpkin and cuts the root, she picks up the vegetable. "Heavy pumpkin." She says struggling to hold it in her hands. "Watch out, mice!" She warns the mice that were scattered on the ground before dropping the pumpkin back on the ground. "Ah, oh, well. never mind, let's go it here."
"Do what here?" Marjolien asks.
"Turn the pumpkin into a carriage." Fairy Godmother says taking her wand from Marjolien's hand. "Thank you for holding that."
"Oh." Marjolien says.
"You're making me nervous, actually." Fairy Godmother says.
"Shall I shut my eyes?" Marjolien asks.
"It might be better." Fairy Godmother says, Marjolien covers her eyes with her hands.
"Oh, for heaven's sake, let's just go for it." Fairy godmother says and waves her hand at the pumpkin and it starts to shake. "Ah, well, something's definitely happening, you see the trick is..." Fairy Godmother pauses. "Actually, I've forgotten what the trick is." she says, Marjolien uncovers her eyes and saw the pumpkin starting to grow.
"I just... just thought, if it does get much bigger?" Marjoline asks.
"Yes? Hang on." Fairy Godmother says, the pumpkin begins to grow bigger and almost squashes them against the windows.
"Is that what you meant to do?" Marjolien asks.
"Do you think that's what I meant to do? Run!, run darling." Fairy Godmother says, they run out of the greenhouse just before they got pushed into the walls of the greenhouse. "Take cover!" She says, they take cover behind some bushes and watch as the pumpkin burst through the greenhouse and turn into a golden carriage. "Ah, one carriage."
"You really are my fairy godmother." Marjolien says in amazement.
"Of course, I don't go about transforming pumpkins for just anybody, now, where are those mice?" Fairy Godmother asks.
"Mice?" Marjolien asks.
"Mh, Mice, mice, mice." Fairy Godmother calls them. "There they are." She says and rushes towards the four mice she spotted and waves her want at them. "Bibbidi-bobbidi-boo!" Fairy Godmother says and the four mice transform into horses. "Four white chargers."
"Gus-Gus, how fine you look." Marjolien says, she looks at her Fairy godmother."But how did you...?" But she was cut off.
"Now, where are we? We got the carriage, horses, uh... footman." Fairy Godmother says.
"Footman?" Marjolien questions, Fairy Godmother notices two lizards.
"Hello there, Mr. Lizard, Bibbidi-bobbidi-boo." Fairy Godmother says and thw two Lizards turn into footmen.
"You called?" One of the Lizard Footman says.
"Now, I need that Coachman." Fairy Godmother says.
"Coachman?" Marjolien asks.
"Did I say coachman? I mean goose." Fairy Godmother says and turns the hoose into a coachman.
"I can't drive! I'm a goose!" The Goose coachman says causing Marjolien to laugh.
"Now, shoo, everyone to place, come on! come on!" Fairy Godmother says and they all hurry towards the carriage.
"Fairy Godmother?" Marjolien says.
"Yes, what?" fairy Godmother says.
"My dress, I can't go in this dress, can you mend it?" Marjolien asks.
"Mend it? no, no, I'll turn it into something new." Fairy Godmother says.
"Oh, no, please don't. this was my mothers, and I'd like to wear it when I go to the palace, It's almost like taking her with me."Marjolien says.
"I understand, but she wouldn't mind if I cheer it up a bit? Wouldn't mind a nice blue." Fairy Godmother says, she waves her wand at Marjolien's dress and it turns into a beautiful blue dress. "There."
Tumblr media
"It's Beautiful! She'd love it!" Marjolien says.
"Now, come on, off you go, Quick, you'll be late!" Fairy Godmother says as the goose coachman rides towards them with the golden carriage.
"Oh, boy." The Goose Coachman says. "Woh." He says, Fairygodmother and Marjolien rush towards the carriage and the Lizardman open's the carrgiage door and just as Marjolien was about to step into the carriage Fairy Godmother stops her.
"Just a moment." Fairy Godmother says noticing Marjolien's plain shoes. "Mh, are these the best you have?"
"It's alright, no one will see them." Marjolein says.
"No, this will ruin the whole look, quick, quick, take them off." Fairy Godmother instructs, Marjolien takes her shoes off. "Yes, they're really quite hideous, into something new for a change, I'm rather good at shoes." Fairy Godmother says and waves her wand towards Marjoliens feet, glass slippers appear on her feet.
Tumblr media
"But they're made of glass." Marjolien states.
"Yes, and you'll find they're really comfortable." Fairy Godmother says. "Marjolien, you really must go now." Fairy Godmother says.
"Oh, Fairy Godmother?" Marjolien says.
"What is it?" Fairy Godmother asks not wanting to become impatient with the young girl.
"My stepmother and the girls?" Marjolien says.
"Don't worry, I'll make sure they don't recognize you." Fairy Godmother says, she waves her hand and places a spell on Marjolein so that she won't be recognized. "Now off you go, for you shall go to the ball!" The lizard coachman and Fairy Godmother helps Marjolien into the carriage. "Up, in you get."
"Oh, so lovely." One of the Lizard footmen says.
"Oh, do stop wittering on." Fairy Godmother says, as the carriage prepares to take off Fairy Godmother suddenly realizes something. "Marjolien, I almost forgot! remember, the magic will only last so long, with the last echo of the last bell at the last stroke of midnight the spell will be broken and all will return to what it was before."
"Midnight?" Marjolien asks.
"Mhmm. Midnight." Fairy Godmother says.
"That's more than enough time." Marjolien says with a wide smile on her face.
"Off you go then." Fairy Godmother says.
"Thank you." Marjolien says.
"Goosey, go!" Fairy Godmother says and the carriage takes off.
"Goodbye!" Marjolien says, Fairy Godmother waves goodbye as the carriage picks up speed towards the palace.
