i'm soooo like. ?? about the fight scene i'm sorry i'm so stuck on it i have so many thoughts about the episode in general but obv we were all waiting for that scene specifically lol

i genuinely was so convinced the fight was gonna be a diversion and the reason they showed it in last episode's teaser was to get people to be like gasp! the boys are fighting! and then in this episode be like psych it was all part of their plan

but it wasn't?? john was just literally losing it a little bit?? it felt like a call back to the john and curt "i want you to hit me scene", we know john gets self-destructive when he's hurting or upset, he'll do anything to feel something, even sabotaging himself or his relationships/friendships.

so it makes sense but mannn i didn't expect it to be legit. breaks my heart that he seeks comfort or like sanity through violence like that and especially hurts that gale is pushed to swing at him when he's so far from an aggressive person

but they also both didn't seem very affected by it (not that mota ever gives us a ton by way of processing emotions) and i doubt it's something that would affect their friendship deeply; it's obvious that they're both hurting in different ways and i can't see either of them holding it against the other outside of like making jabs at the other for it in the future lol

i'll have more coherent thoughts eventually, i was just so taken aback and it's rly interesting with their dynamic and is gonna produce so much brainrot from me lmfaoo

04. shadow of evil, does not pick up on or suspect ANYTHING about the weird-ass energy of the mutually-lying-and-hiding-something exchange they had with splinter. look at him. he is in the middle of being like “we nailed it i can’t believe he fell for that”. i love him.

05. mutant menace, raph is VERY ANGERY that people were unable to tell that the note they left with their ‘good deeds’ was using THE JUST-KIDDING QUOTES AND JUST-KIDDING WINKY FACE!!!! this whole ep could make a case for his autism swag, it’s so.... he is understanding many things in a way that makes a ton of sense to him that is largely not understood by others

06. the ancient art of ninja hide and seek, where raph spends almost the entire mission taking “stick to the shadows” as literally and face-value as turtle-ly possible and thinks he is absolutely nailing it.

07. snow day, (or lbr any other time he interacts w ghost bear) just. so so so excited about his favorite wrestler... very much having that override the fact that ghost bear is clearly not about this

08. raph’s ridealong, goes through the entire process of getting mistaken for a criminal, freaking out a whole police station, getting apprehended and thrown into the back of the wagon, without clocking any of that energy (bc he is so excited to do a cool activity related to his extreme interest in crimefighting/justice)

and like thats just the stuff i found idly browsing through caps i bet theres a ton of other examples on the social front alone, let alone stuff like stims, special interests, behavior patterns, etc.

Listen, I am just ECSTATIC. Ever since I seriously became tuned into the veepstakes, he was my number one pick (I mean, I was not immune to the brief flirtation everyone had with Beshear/Buttigieg/etc), but yes. Walz was my top pick and I was trying desperately not to get my heart too set on him in case it fell through, but he was the obvious best choice of the contenders by a country mile. He has an almost absurdly Midwestern pro-America background (military veteran, public school teacher, football coach from a small rural town, etc) AND he has managed to enact a long list of progressive policies in Minnesota with a very narrow majority in the state legislature. Also, you're going to be seeing a lot of this video, for good reason:

Also.... let's be real, Shapiro would have been an incredible distraction/drag on the ticket, unfortunately. We don't need to deal with his retrograde views on Gaza and his other baggage, and while he is a very popular governor in Pennsylvania, it's less certain that his appeal would translate to other states. We can argue (or you know, let's not and move on) about whether or not that was fair, but this is just not the year to try to win the most critical high-stakes election ever by pissing off young voters. Shapiro has done plenty of good things and has time to develop his career further, but he would have been a BAD pick for 2024 and I was alarmed at how many Respected Pundits (tm) were pulling for him. Reuters even claimed that picking him would "defang Republican attempts to make Israel-Gaza a wedge issue for Democrats," which is such a mind-bogglingly stupid statement that it makes you wonder how anyone writing it actually got paid for their political insight, but it also explains a lot about mainstream media these days. Picking Shapiro would have been an absolute gift to the Republicans and bad-faith actors and others (plus like, I don't want to have to spend time winning back the young voters who are actually once more engaged in the process!) and would have led to the media eagerly jumping into the feeding frenzy (because they're desperate to have a reason not to cover Trump's increasingly crazy-ass shit) and other Democratic-on-Democratic infighting. And it goes without saying that WE CANNOT AFFORD THAT.

As well, picking Shapiro just because you need to win PA this election cycle is yet another example of why the Electoral College sucks, and the polling averages in PA have been moving solidly blue anyway. You can just park Shapiro there and have him campaign in the state as the sitting popular governor, rather than expose him to the liability of a nationwide campaign where, as noted, all the other stuff would be a drag. If it's true that the establishment was pushing Harris to pick Shapiro and she picked Walz instead, a) GOOD! and b) if anything, this election cycle needs to fucking teach us that we have got to stop going with the Conventional Wisdom Tee Em. Walz was already out there, he was already popular with the public/energizing the grassroots, AND he was the guy who coined the "Weird" attack line that is actually effective and organically popular against the Republicans and drives them batshit. So for Kamala to lean into that and take him as her running mate is... zomgz... smart, and I am not used to the Democrats playing smart and aggressive and not just passive-defensive. I don't understand. Wow.

Anyway, now watch the New York Times (and the others, lbr, but especially the NYT) desperately try to dig up scandalous stories about that time Walz didn't stop at the 4H booth at the county fair, or walked past someone without saying "Ope just gonna sneak by ya first" or some other terrible Midwestern sin, but fuck those guys. Just some S8 excitement/mishmash

Tommy S8 confirmation!!!! We knew he was going to be in it but the trickle of doubt, the naysayers whispers, is gone!!!!

And Buck and Tommy are still strong(Literally no doubt about that) and we'll see some of the getting to know each other stage still!!! The backend S7 was just so full and every plotline suffered as they vied for screentime. I miss them together on my computer monitor sososo much.

And I'm so excited for Madney as foster parents and debating having another kid and Henren getting their daughter back and the Wilson-Han family. And Hotshots meta! I've laughed so hard at so many Hotshots posts on my tumblr dash. I need the fandom to be called out via Hotshots. I need Kim and Taylor to be involved with Hotshots. I need to see Bobby be like "This is so not right. This isn't realistic" but also be throwing out shit the 118 did and be told "Nah, too crazy. Too expensive. Too one in a million chance."

I am so excited for Hotshots lbr.

I cannot wait to see Buck learn to deal with Gerrard. Have to deal, for the first time ever, with not being the white cishet guy he was for 32 years. Have to realize that not everyone wants to change. Having to deal with a new longterm captain that's not Bobby. And that this man left scars on the man he's falling in love with. Like his fire father guided him home to family, and that family led him to Tommy, Tommy's fire father left claw marks that left scars that haunts him even now. And Buck's fire father almost left without a word.

It'll be a story of men and their fire fathers. Of scars and love, of horrific words and memories, of being left and starting anew, and finding family and true love.

Gerrard could never be anyone but Buck's main storyline. Not with the Bobby and the Tommy of it all.

And Eddie and Chris. It goes without saying. We've been waiting all summer to find out how Eddie fixes this mess. I am, very thrilled, to hear whispers that Bobby's priest is coming back for Eddie. I think there's a ton of ways religion could go for Eddie and I'm open for whatever way they choose(I'd be happily surprised if he chooses to embrace it? But also what if he realizes he's attracted to "hot" priest?)

But also top priority is new Bathena home for family picnics. Plastered with no Gerrards allowed signs, of course. And who comes back into Athena's life...?

I'm just bouncing around waiting for for S8.

So I'm fresh off watching EarthSpark season 2 part 1 and I have to say: most of the criticisms about the writing, animation, and characterisation are correct. Season 2 pivots sharply away from a lot of the really good stuff established in season 1, and it lost something special. As well as money lbr.

But I also don't think anything I saw was worthy of the level of hate and vitriol people are aiming towards this show.

Yes it's a shame that it wasn't as good as season 1, but at worst, it's fine. It's fine, you guys. I was dreading some War for Cybertron or Prime Wars tier shit but I found season 2 perfectly enjoyable, if just on about the same level as most other children's shows a lot of the time.

And I'm going to be honest: I'm fine with Optimus, Elita, Megatron and the others not featuring as much. Yes I really like them, they were some of my favourite parts of seasons 1, but this isn't their show and I think their presence was honestly a negative at times. They are not the main characters, ES shouldn't shift focus onto them at the expense of Robbie, Mo and the Terrans. I do agree that Bumblebee should have featured more because he was established in season 1 as their mentor, but again: not his show.

The lack of Nightshade was far more obvious and disappointing, but I think we can thank the bigots for that - I blame them and the higher ups at Hasbro, not the ES team. There's still a chance Nightshade will get more focus in part 2. I'm hoping Hasbro is just letting the drama die down.

But now for the big one. The Starscream.

I prefer him as a villain! Like I was interested in seeing where a good guy Starscream arc might go but… I just prefer him as a villain! He's so perfectly nasty and it's so much fun to watch. Let him be evil, it's like his natural habitat.

That being said, I still don't think it's entirely too late for a redemption arc. The thing is, we know that Starscream can be a horrible person because we've seen him before - but the viewers who are new to Transformers haven't. You can't have a redemption arc without a character doing something terrible first. Will Starscream actually get one? I dunno, it seems unlikely at this point, but I think there's still a chance, and I'd rather see a character try to come back from something truly atrocious than just hear vague stories about how horrible they used to be. Yes that goes for Megatron as well.

I hope that part 2 is better. I think there's hope for more nuanced Decepticons with Shockwave (and presumably the others) turning away from Starscream at the end. I hope we get more focus on characters who didn't get to shine this season. And I hope that Hasbro gives the team more money. But if part 1 is anything to go by, I expect I'll enjoy it.

I am once again concerned about the trend (in general but especially on here) of self-infantilization, i.e. statements regarding competency like “I can’t believe I’m an adult” (which I have also expressed before lbr), and how it often goes with statements like “I can’t believe I’m allowed to __”.

I’m concerned that this insecurity regarding one’s own lack of competency can quickly become projected onto the general population, where “I’m not a competent adult” becomes “no one is a competent adult”, and “I feel like I can’t be trusted with __” becomes “no one should be allowed to __”.

Now, a single person struggling with an insecurity is one thing, but when it becomes a cultural norm, it can have devastating effects. It’s practically a glowing invitation for an authoritarian to step in and say, “No you’re right, you can’t be trusted to do that, and most people can’t be, so just let me take that away to keep you safe, because I’m competent and I can be trusted, and maybe if you really need it you can ask my permission just this once. Isn’t that easier? Of course I can still do whatever I want though.” And before you know it you’ve created a police state with so much red tape that it’s impossible to live without breaking any rules. We’ve seen it happen.

But it gets a little complicated, because in many ways you become what you think you are, and a trend of perceived incompetence becomes a trend of effective incompetence, which makes the aforementioned power grab even easier. Not to mention there’ll also always be a subset of overconfident people who are also incompetent, and can be used as a universal example.

I’m here to tell you that competent adults do exist, and* you can become one, and you need to become one, and in many ways you likely already are one. But it takes courage, and character, and action, and perseverance. You can become trained to safely operate machinery. You can learn to drive. You can vote in elections. You can learn to safely own, use, and carry a gun. You can manage your own finances. You can do difficult, dangerous things.

*unless perhaps you have a very severe disability, (there’s always an exception)

Atp i would like to see how ruby and aqua's relarionship will go. Not in "Yasss incest!" way but more of how they (mostly ruby) realize that they need to go their past lives and accept their relation as siblings. Or at least how wrong it is even if ruby wants it so much. There is no way incest would happen because Aka hates it. I am more interested in their psychological state and their conflict and resolving that conflict.

I don't think we can definitely say Akasaka Loves or Hates XYZ just because none of us know him, but there is a weird sense of like... discomfort or maybe avoidance on the topic of incest in OnK that I find kind of interesting to just poke at in my head sometimes. Because like, one of my main issues with the way OnK has handled the incest since 123 is that it just... well, hasn't.

I know that sounds insane in a post 143 world but going through the way the AquRuby stuff (or lbr just Ruby) has been written since 123, it feels like there's a very clear distinction between the ideas of "Ruby having feelings for Aqua, her brother" and "Ruby (& Sarina through her) having feelings for Goro, her doctor". When the story wants to play AquRuby for laughs, it leans into Ruby being attracted to her brother. When it actually takes things seriously, the framing is almost always Ruby addressing Gorou and the concept of incest is so loudly, conspicuously absent. You can even sort of see this line being drawn all the way back in 123, just at the end where Ruby very pointedly first addresses Aqua and then, separately, addresses "Sensei". It's almost as if she's purposely trying to create a divide so she can have one without dealing with the reality of what it would mean to be with the other.

It's hard to tell whether or not this is intentional in the sense of being part of Ruby's arc but it nevertheless creates a sense of the series wanting to have its cake and eat it too, indulging in the shock value and spicy intrigue of incest as a taboo without meaningfully engaging with it as subject matter. I've described it elsewhere recently as the series exclusively toying with the *aesthetics* of incest, its surface level referential language and set dressing, while resolutely avoiding going any deeper and I still stand by that. The 143 kiss is actually a really good example of this - the imagery is that of two siblings kissing but on that very same page, Ruby reminds us that in her eyes, she is talking to and in love with her "Sensei". The series has conducted this deeply convoluted narrative trick where it can depict what is very clearly incest without it technically being incest. Even when roadblocks to the GRSR relationship are addressed, it's only ever in reference to their age gap and Ruby always frames it as something that *used* to stand in their way but is no longer an issue now she's 18.

On days I am feeling charitable towards the series, I'm inclined to think this is an intentional part of Ruby's arc and that she is, in universe, being a bit delulu about the whole thing as an unhealthy coping mechanism - her being avoidant of emotionally inconvenient truths is something we see popping up more than once, so this being an extension of that tendency would make sense. When I am feeling more cynical, however, I tend towards thinking this is just an excuse to indulge in shocking imagery that generates clicks without ever having to actually commit to upsetting readers by sinking *or* canonizing incest ship. My best guess is that the truth is somewhere in the middle but it must be stressed that this is just my thoughts and I have no idea what goes on in Akasaka's brain.

Anyway this is just a long and rambly way of saying "word". Regardless of what direction the story takes AquRuby, I just want the story to finally fucking commit to something instead of chickening out every time it gears up to do so.

In Misty Dream or a modern au, I know Arenys has Saera to defend him,and his muña a d himself, but there's got to be a time where Aemond goes papa dragon over him, a moment where he takes care of baby Ae because of something like a kid bullying him

the first time aenys trains with squires he didn’t grow up with, they try to make fun of him, saying he has no real skills and is only where he is bc he’s a prince’s son. they constantly point out that he doesn’t have a dragon when his twin sister does and that he’s must be a bastard like his muña bc of that.

aenys tries to ignore it because he wants to be brave like his parents and handle it himself but over the weeks they start getting rougher with him, throwing him about cuz he’s on the smaller side. he puts up with finding his gear dented and smeared with stuff, telling himself they are just jealous. until finally, one day they take it too far and aenys ends up with a black eye and soaked from getting shoved in the lake. that’s when aemond takes notice and presses aenys to tell him what’s up. aenys is embarrassed and doesn’t want aemond to intervene and though aemond is pissed that anyone would dare speak to his son like that, he gets where aenys is coming from (unlike luke who’d go bananas without second thought). instead, aemond teaches aenys how to defend himself in a fight and if the squires also end up with all the worst chores for months to come? that’s aemond’s business.

Riordanverse: Gods and Mortals and Nicknames

So I wrote this in response to another post but it was kinda tangential so I’m gonna just slap it down as its own thing, too.  Very rough and ready because I’m tired and have no free time at the moment, but if people are interested (and I can find time), I can absolutely try and tidy this up at some point!  I believe it was @fearlessinger I originally breached this topic with some time back in the toa discord but there were probably a few others lurking as well...

But anyway: Gods and Mortals and Nicknames!

Specifically, the way that the gods never canonically shorten each other’s names, or use anything less than a full name (barring Dionysus’ chronic inability to say most demigods’ names correctly) to refer to each other and the demigods (with one glaring exception which I’ll get onto in a sec).

It almost reads as though there’s an etiquette there, that using their full name is a mark of respect - that you acknowledge their power and you’re not belittling it by bestowing some sort of pet name/nickname - and it’s interesting to me that they keep that up with the demigods (who we know they envy, thanks to Apollo dropping that little truth in his narration, and are of course the major source of their own worship and therefore power in the modern day).  A key example here, and the one that contradicts fanon the most, is the fact that Apollo never, ever, calls Artemis anything other than “Artemis” or some variant of “sister” (titles being the alternative to using a full name, eg. “father” when they’re not trying to get Zeus’ attention!).  There is no Arty or any other typical shortening one might expect from a twin.

That’s completely different to how a lot of (Western, I’m British and that’s the culture I can speak for; I won’t make assumptions on others) mortals view names; nicknames/pet names are very common when you’re close with someone and like someone. And we see it with several of the main characters:

Percy, of course, is the prime example.  We all know it’s short for Perseus and we all know that Percy never, ever, goes by Perseus.  He doesn’t like it when people call him that (and maybe that’s because it sounds a bit pretentious, or because Perseus is too much the shadow of his predecessor rather than him), and the only time people call him that is gods or monsters, or when he’s in trouble/people are intentionally trying to rile him.

Nico is another one, and one I didn’t realise about at all until THO, when Apollo refers to him as Nicholas.  Honestly, I thought Nico was his full name until then, but I’ve been informed by someone with a far greater understanding of Italian names than I that Nicholas makes more sense as his full name than Nico, so there we have it.

Meg, leaning into TOA because that’s where this is going to go, is a third; she refuses to be called Margaret under any circumstances and if she got her way, no-one would even know Meg wasn’t her full name.

Will isn’t a main character (much to my ongoing disappointment), but we got canon confirmation that his full name is William, and yet it’s never used except when people close to him do that good old Full Naming Thing when they’re fake-mad.

Which leads me off to my point about names and etiquette and Apollo, our god who loves humanity and quite frankly, understands and respects humanity better than the rest of the gods (and yes, even pre-TOA but I’m not getting into that rn) so it makes sense that he might be willing to switch which etiquette he’s using depending on if he’s talking with/about mortals rather than gods.

Because Apollo calls Percy “Perseus”… but only sometimes, when he’s being a bit of a little shit because especially at the start of TOA, Apollo was really laying that facade on thick, lbr.  Otherwise, unlike literally every other god, he calls him Percy - Percy’s preferred name.  With Nico, Nico told him “it’s Nico”, and Apollo immediately switched to that, his preferred name, without hesitation.  Meg, when asked, did give her full name but also made it clear that she hates it, and Apollo never used it.

And of course, there’s Will, Apollo’s beloved son, who he calls Will right from the start of THO, completely bucking the trend of full names unless requested otherwise, and being a lovely beacon of “Apollo and Will had enough interactions pre-BOO for Apollo to know Will’s preferred form of address and default to it when he’s mortal and half-conscious and very groggy to the point he barely recognises his own son - yet still uses his preferred name and not his full name”.

Dionysus, as mentioned earlier, can also buck the trend, but it seems to be much rarer, and with good reason - unlike Apollo, who gladly gets attached to mortals over and over and over again, he doesn’t want to get attached, so he distances himself with fake names most of the time (but uses full names when he does use them… except with Nico and Will, who are the only two demigods I can think of off the top of my head that Dionysus refers to by name (and nickname, no less) in every appearance he has with them.  With Nico, I assume this is because of the therapy sessions and the way that he’s chosen to get close to him for some reason.  Slightly less clear with Will, but considering it was from Apollo’s pov and therefore Apollo was there, I am fond of (and amused by) the idea that Dionysus knows better than to mess up Apollo’s kids names when his brother is there and will go all papa bear on him for getting it wrong.  Maybe he calls him other names when Apollo isn’t in earshot, who knows…

YES!!! heavy on the brat miko she's a brat even when domming she makes it work dont ask how. i can see snarky sub beidou too ough..

miko is peak brat. she's literally made for it. she will bully you about wanting her to sub but if you pull her hair she's melting like putty. she definitely likes it rough if she's subbing and that goes for you too. expect plenty of bites and scratches.

generally a menace in bed lbr. will absolutely test your patience trying to turn the tables on you just so you can put her in her place. she's a lot quicker and more squirmy then you'd maybe expect her to be, she can and absolutely will try to flip you over. tie her up though and she'll behave..physically, at least. she's still going to be a snarky little shit trying to rile you up until you rail her into the mattress so hard she feels it the next morning. so you better shut her up, huh?

shove your fingers in her mouth, gag her, etc. shes not complaining which. keep her on her toes and switch it up even.

she has excellent control over her tail and ears to not give away her emotions but she kinda loses it if she gets really into it. rile her up enough and maybe she'll let you pull on her tail (please do)

but she also reads as someone who would want a night where you two just go at it trying to dom the other. it really gets her worked up and you might end up bleeding a bit because she gets a little too excited. might get a scar or two in the process. her teeth hurt and she knows how to use them (all the better if you are into it)

beidou, on the other hand..where miko is a little mean (affectionately) beidou feels more snarky then outright. yknow. mean. she feels more like she leans toward being a dom to me but shes absolutely down to sub!! shes just a little surprised at first

especially if your smaller then her though shes LOVES it. shes built like a damn tank she thinks its a little funny (and really hot) and she makes sure you know it. shes crude and snarky but she actually enjoys subbing from time to time that she doesnt really mind it all that much. its nice to let you take the reins sometimes

The million dollar question for the fic ask game: in "this is a love story", who proposed and how?

vale proposed as part of his multi-step plan to get forgiven and get back together with marc. So he proposes around like, less than four months since they have been back together officially. (because as true kings of communications, during the summer break they were already fucking but not talking about their problems and that's why marc says "we are not friends"). Why does he think proposing after this short time is a sane thing to do? because it's the ultimate commitment, it shows that he cares. luckily for him marc is just as insane and accepts it. It's a long engagement btw, years long, because lbr they still have many things to fix in their relationship. the proposal is more like a promise of "i want it to be you". And the proposal itself is absurd and funny and big and motorbikes are somehow involved, like vale recreating one of his celebrations at the ranch after he wins the americana but like, getting a giant flag with written on it "marc marry me" and getting an ugly neon yellow papillon around his neck and then stopping in front of marc to gift him flowers produced from. somewhere. and then reaching inside his leathers to get the ring out and propose properly. all the academy boys are in on it, even bezz (even if begrudgingly because he still doesn't trust marc). marc cries a lot. and of course the next day he goes to buy a ring for vale so they are matching. (yes they are basically married but without the paperwork).

this is one option the other option is that after the proposal they resist two weeks and then elope because they are both crazy insane.

Adachi knows that look they always give each other (cause it’s the exact same one he gives Kashiwagi, lbr). Nanba’s suspicions were confirmed when he saw Joongi debating between buying roses or pansies. Tomi has known these two for a week and even he already knows there is something cause why else would Joongi run to Zhao like that as soon as he saw him. so curious about why you think girl kid first in canon and also why you prefer boy pls share

I think one of the main reasons "girl first" is that normally in next gen stories, the oldest kid (or girl, lbr here) is the 'main character' well because fandom tends to be more AFAB / female dominated, and I feel like mother-daughter or father-daughter (or father-son) conflicts are the ones we're used to seeing (mother-father not so much). The fact that Callum has a dead mom who've we've always had a name for (dead papa not so much) I think also contributed to 1) Rayllum's first kid is a girl and 2) she's named some version of Sarai / in honour of Callum's mum.

I could be wrong bc the Rayllum fandom has never been super into fanbabies / next gen as a whole, and I've never spent much time in next gen circles in general (I like OCs when they're there to flesh out the canon characters, not so much with them being given their own full storylines -- though I've definitely experienced exceptions!).

Personally I've always been a fan of Ezran incorporating more of Sarai (wielding a spear, naming his daughter after her) > Callum, just cause Callum does remember his mom. A way for the boys to share, in a way?

That said: Rayllum having a girl first in canon (if we see an epilogue briefly featuring fanbabies at all, which we may not; they could also just not have kids) just feels... like it matches vibe wise? Idk what to say beyond that, it's not that a boy wouldn't fit... like 60/40 if that makes sense?

That said I think I do prefer a boy for them (right now at least, I'm sure I'll love whatever canon goes with) because it allows for more blatant Harrow-Callum father-son parallels and for Rayla to be concentrating on breaking cycles of stoicism/Moonshadow "not showing/sharing emotions" emphasis with a boy when boys already aren't encouraged to be emotionally open IRL. So that's where I think the preference comes from. I like to imagine their firstborn is a boy who's a mage but without either of his parents' fire, and more of a "violence last I don't like fighting" like his Uncle Ezran
