Me 8 months ago: "i'm fairly certain i am not going to write this out as a full fic and instead keep it to some snippets in the setting that i'm really driven to write. (but that's what i said about the believe au and, well, that's one fic away from being a finished series & finished story)"
Me now, two and a half three+ five and a half pages of plot bullet points deep: -_-
(In fairness to past me, I did acknowledge that 'just some snippets' was what i said about the believe au.... XD )
Wesley somehow manages to talk his way out of this alive. This will not last long.
okay FINE here's the role reversal au?
SO
before I watched Echo I went and rewatched s1 of Daredevil. which then proceeded to take over my brain in a grand throwback to 2015.
and my brain absolutely latched on to the many layers of parallels and foiling between the protagonist and antagonist trios and just how well that season does 'the villain absolutely believes they are the reasonable one here and that the hero is getting in the way of the good they're going to do' and just does a really really compelling antagonist in general
and then it started to generate 'okay, but how do you plausibly do the reversal of those two trios as protagonist/antagonists' and it Would Not Stop until I finally gave in and opened yet another google doc and started jotting down my notes. thus the specific exasperated tone to that google doc titling XD
(i also tried to check ao3, like 'surely this specific role reversal au has been done a bunch of different ways a dozen times, this season has been out for nine years' WRONG. searching multiple possible role reversal/hero villain swap tags got me like, one fic of this specific role reversal which was wrapped up with a bunch of other stuff I wasn't looking for, though godspeed to that author for being the One person I could find getting something down for this concept. if someone knows of a fic along these lines please send it my way i am being totally honest. 'i searched ao3 assuming this had been done a dozen times and there was zilch' is also part of how cisco & harry in a pacific rim au happened XD)
i'm fairly certain i am not going to write this out as a full fic and instead keep it to some snippets in the setting that i'm really driven to write. (but that's what i said about the believe au and, well, that's one fic away from being a finished series & finished story)
anyway, the thing that i really couldn't stop thinking about is the idea that instead of going the Spider-Gwen comics route with Earth 65 Matt 'Murderdock' Murdock having been trained by the Hand, have it be a case where Stick continues his training past the point he kicked Matt out in the show, because I would fight Stick in an Arby's parking lot and the idea of him being responsible for Matt being the antagonist amuses me, and also because it fits the 'antagonist thinks he's really the best case scenario here no matter what he has to do' framing, and so Matt is full zealous general of the Chaste - but still having ended up with a different perspective from Stick, which I kind of get into here, with a flashback to Matt and Foggy in college, starting off talking about Elektra:
Matt laughs, “No, she just … knows my mentor. He was talking to her about getting me to come back and do a job.” “Huh. Okay.” Foggy says. “You and your mentor - don’t get along?” “He’s the most important person in my life.” Matt says, with a kind of fervor that makes Foggy sit back. “Definitely the most important person I know,” he adds, with a forced chuckle. “That’s… a lot.” Foggy says. “So…” “You know anyone who’s just like… not getting their head around the twenty-first century?” “Sounds like my dad, I keep having to help him with his phone - what?” Matt lets out the snort of laughter he’d clearly been holding in. “Just thinking about St - my mentor’s face if someone ever compared him to a dad.” Foggy does not say yikes, but it shows on his face. “Anyway,” Matt says. “It’s not just the tech stuff, you know. Like… it’s how things work.” “Oh, like when you tell your uncle you’re job searching and he says you should just be showing initiative and walking in to real brick and mortar stores and asking if they’re hiring -” “A lot like that.” Matt chuckles. “My mentor is a real … well, more of a sticks and stones kind of guy than even a brick and mortar kind of guy, but … that sort of thing. You want a building, you make it one brick at a time, you want a building down you knock it down wall by wall.” Foggy imitates smashing noises. “But that’s such a tiny part of the picture. The decisions - what gets built where, what gets torn down - that’s where the real power to change things is. And that’s where you need to know what the zoning laws are, who writes the laws, who is in charge of the permits and the land rights.” “The things we know.” “Exactly. You need to live in that world, if you’re going to get things done.” Foggy claps Matt on the shoulder. “We’ll be in that world soon, and we’ll get things done. And,” he adds, “make enough money to forget all about that Greek girl, am I right?” Matt laughs. “Already forgotten.”
send me a wip title and i'll tell you something about it!

Can I ask what was your first impression of TGCF and if it turned out wrong or right?
My first impression of TGCF was "this goof continuously ascends to -- and gets kicked out of -- heaven, this is going to be clown town isn't it?"
Tumblr media
And honestly I stand by that one, I think I was completely correct**
Tumblr media
(**barring the fact that this goof will then go on to experience ever conceivable horror known to man but honestly I mostly expected it after MDZS)

I recognized a few kdrama actors from Heesu in class 2. A lot of time BL feels like it lives separately from the other kdramas I watch, that always have actors I recognize, but this one feels different.

infinite wealths got 14 chapters, im not gonna pretend like i didn't start the game foaming at the mouth wanting to see kiryu again but I didn't think he'd show up as early as chapter 3? i dont want to complain about More Kiryu but bringing him back at the very beginning of the game feels wrong, like theyre admitting that they couldn't make ichiban work on his own so they had to bring in John Yakuza himself to keep the fans happy or something. i had to stop playing after they get out of the car so idk if Kiryu leaves the party again soon after, but even then it feels weird to have him there at all so early on
and... the info dumps and verbal recaps of what happened on other games were never this bad were they? i get how they wanted to vaguely treat infinite wealth as its own thing and how, it being the 8th or so game in the franchise and all, a lot of people would not have played most or even any of the previous games (why you would bother with infinite wealth if thats the case is a mystery to me but eh) so they wanted to make sure everyone playing was vaguely caught up with ichiban and kiryus story but like... I was there. yes i do remember kiryus pretending to be dead to protect his family, yes i do remember how ichiban has two dads. why would they make him say that around six times in just the first three chapters?
and i get how they felt like they HAD to introduce kiryu properly since, again, a lot of people playing infinite wealth probably just played LaD and nothing else, but even in LaD they didn't just dump kiryus backstory on you. did i miss something why does ichiban just know everything about kiryu when they made it pretty clear in LaD that he never found out anything about him? when they parted ways in yakuza 7 he was still referring to him as "that guy" or "the dragon" because of the dream he had and seonhee didn't tell him anything, even after kiryu left, so how does he just know his name and his backstory now and why does KIRYU act as if he gave him that information himself. i was there, you have no reason to find it normal that he even knows your name????? i am losing my fuking mind over this actually
the info dumping is so weird, if you dont know who this mysterious man that seems to have a troubled past and Feels Important to the narrative is... too bad? skill issue even?? (its kind of on you if youre confused about things after jumping into the 8th instalment in a franchise) if y7 made you curious about him, the game being vague about who he is and what hes doing here did its job well since now youll most likely play the previous games to find out what his deal is, and if you dont, thats okay too since Ichiban was supposed to be the New Protagonist. but since they didnt keep kiryu as an "easter egg" (how could they even do that. its Kiryu.) now it feels like him and ichiban arent even fighting for relevancy, it feels like theyre actively pushing ichi farther back into kiryus shadow
and it feels like the more the games go on the more they dont seem to take the world building seriously (like how the florist just doesn't exist in yakuza 6 because the game would've been over the moment kiryu got to kamurocho, and him not existing anymore carried over to the games after it) maybe i should replay the games now without rose colored glasses but i dont remember ever feeling like i was watching the writers talk to me directly this aggressively in a scene before? this is just the third chapter i get theyre still just setting things up but... i think its just ichiban
the man who erased his name didnt feel like how infinite wealth is feeling and it came out before it, but after yakuza 7. idk what it is about having ichiban as the protagonist that seems to make the writers just... idk. ichiban had a lot of potential at the beginning of y7 but then by the end of the game it felt like that was it, his story got wrapped up. and i know we could say the same thing about kiryu but at least with him the writers made it make sense and work according to his characterization (eh...)
but ichiban is just A Nice Guy which couldve worked really well but hes such a simple character that they just dont know what to do with him? like oh yea his mom is alive actually so lets send him to hawaii to find her. uh a big tiddie vtuber canceled him online. i guess. (im also realizing now that i actually kinda hate how the games take place in the modern day. i know there was never a way to work around that since the games have always worked like this and you being as frustrated and annoyed as ichiban and kiryu are is kinda the point but. eh.)
i know im biased as all hell since i love kiryu, but what made kiryu falling back into the yakuza world over and over again believable and compelling was the fact that yea, the world "outside of him" still exists, politicians and police officers are still corrupt, old friends still need him, and his reputation still makes waves through the underworld and them crashing in on him over and over and over again until he just lets the tide take him made sense- i know im oversimplifying his story and yea they made a lot of weird and inconsistent writing decisions through the games (again, i dont think the florist even gets mentioned in y6 and the time line in general has a bunch of plot holes, majimas story too) but it. idk. the direction theye taking things in is weird and i hope Pirates doesnt feel like this
Tumblr media
hes wholesome and prettty and nice and i like h im
#infinite wealth#kasuga ichiban#i cant believe one bad exposition scene led to me relapsing into not liking the ichiban saga that much again#the plot hasnt even taken shape i shouldnt have this strong of an opinion on it yet#then again when has that stopped me from preemptively complaining about something#i havent finished judgement but i keep thinking about how it just feels better handled than the ichiban games#all the games in the franchise have their “huh that doesnt make any sense” and their “yea thats stupid” plot points and all#but its different in the ichiban games? its not that it doesnt make sense or that things Just Happen#its more that the games are transparently trying to do something different#while being extremely self conscious about it and not taking the world building that seriously anymore#leaning into the “yakuza is a wacky and weird series” mightve helped the franchise pick up steam and im glad for it#but i dont think they know how to balance that with the actual crime drama anymore#at least not in the ichiban games#the games have become less grounded as they go on is all#and i think something simple that reflects that too is how the sewers are used in the games#idk#i dont wanna say the change in fighting system was a mistake cuz i actually enjoy turn based combat games#and in infinite wealth so far it looks like they improved it#but i think the fantastical elements they tied to it are just not for me#i can see why so many people like it and all but thats just not what i look for in this games#my greed sickens me or whatever the kids say#kiryu kazuma#yakuza 8#ichiban#kazuma kiryu#rgg#ryu ga gotoku#yakuza infinite wealth#like a dragon

thinking about how objectively funny it is that August took out some of the pages from his own story out of the Storybook because he was ashamed of them or whatever when August, out of everyone in town, has thee most recognisable story worldwide.
like, August, I'm sorry but I don't think there's any running or hiding from this. Taking out the Pleasure Island arc of your story in one book isn't gonna do a lot to change the general public's perception of things. Or Henry's perception either, for that matter.

WIP Wednesday
The lovely @lucky-bishop tagged me, and since it’s still technically Wednesday, here’s another bit from my Author!Peter fic!
Two days after Peter tours the Vatican, he wakes to his phone ringing far too loudly.  He mutters a handful of colorful curses and, without checking the caller ID, answers the phone. “What,” Peter says in lieu of any proper greeting. “Um, hi, Peter,” Scott’s voice pitches in surprise on the other end of the line.  “Stiles said I shouldn’t call you but–” “Scott, it is two in the fucking morning, speak quickly or I will rip out your throat from across the planet.” “Right, well, uh, it’s the usual Beacon Hills mess.  There’s been three dead bodies in the Preserve, weird scents at the border, and we have a handful of possible suspects.” “Do you happen to have anything more concrete, perhaps?” “It smells like an anxious wet dog?” Peter groans.  “Where is Stiles?  Derek?  Chris?” “Oh, uh, none of them will answer my calls?” “Is that a question?” “Not really, it’s just it’s been a few hours, and it’s only Malia and I at my house now, and I had hoped one of them had already talked to you about it?” They had not talked to Peter about it, of course.  Derek had more sense than that and Chris would only email if it was particularly obscure.  Stiles had stopped all communication since Peter left town, which probably means nothing. “Let me make another call, Scott.”  Peter hangs up and presses the speed dial for Derek instead.

the tonal shift in this dt preview is taking me out lmao ichijiku got some good news about otome’s whereabouts and was just about to go find nemu to share the good news, that nemu had been right about that the person needs to come back on their own terms, and the two of them talk about the answers they’ve been trying to find within themselves it’s a really nice moment between them
and then the conversation shifts to how they intend to deal with a group of insurrectionists helmed by someone named youei namini (??) who has even more radical views than otome is gaining traction on becoming the newest prime minister—

The Brothers Rico (1957)
"Okay, okay, so nobody's blaming you! Let's just say something happened way back, huh? So maybe I am gonna die. But, Eddie, you've got even bigger troubles. You're gonna live."
#the brothers rico#1957#film noir#american cinema#phil karlson#lewis meltzer#ben perry#georges simenon#richard conte#dianne foster#kathryn grant#larry gates#james darren#argentina brunetti#lamont johnson#paul picerni#harry bellaver#paul dubov#william phipps#richard bakalyan#mimi aguglia#US noir adaptation of a Simenon novel; i haven't read this one i dont think but I'd bet good money the book doesn't feature the same#syrupy sweet (and frankly quite implausible) ending. that aside‚ this is very decent stuff indeed. it's character led‚ rather than being#too plot heavy‚ allowing Conte (an old favourite of mine since he stole The Four Just Men tv series away from his international co stars)#to shine in his role as a former mob accountant gone straight but dragged‚ by younger brothers‚ back into the grist of it all#he's brilliant‚ particularly in the early domestic scenes with Foster which are genuinely very sweet and charming‚ with a realism and#natural rhythm that this kind of film so often fails to find in contrast to the stylized violence and hyper cool dialogue of the more macho#setpieces (not that i don't enjoy those too!). nor is Conte alone; this is a good film for actors‚ and every part down to the most minor of#middlemen‚ henchmen and goons (and there's a lot of those here) feels like a fully realised‚ honest creation by a talented actor#the melodrama comes a little thick in the back half and as said the very ending is.. far fetched. but definitely a superior whole of a film

you're misunderstanding the point, rhaenys is not saying alicent and rhaenyra are equally guilty, she's saying both of them are equally not guilty, because both times the choices were made by someone else and yet they get the blame for it. she's saying 'you had no power over this and neither did alicent'
Rhaenys said that Alicent is not the one responsible of the bloodshed that is happening and Rhaenyra says that she's permitting it, after this Rhaenys says that it's the same as her permitting Jahaerys' murder.
Now from a viewer point of view this can be considered false even if it's debatale since she knows of the bloodsheds that are being committed (although she is against it)* and also because most of Alicent's actions before the start of the war are in conflict with Rhaenyra.
From a in-show character pov, from Rhaenyra pov it's instead false since Alicent crowned Aegon and she declared for him and since (even if they're pushing the 'it was luke's murder that started the war' agenda) his usurping is what started the war (since even if luke wouldn't have died the war would've started regardless since neither Aegon or Rhaenyra wanted to renounce to the throne), from her (Rhaenyra) pov Alicent is not against the war.
Now it's true that Rhaenys said that Alicent doesn't want bloodshed, but still from Rhaenyra's pov Alicent is the woman who created, spreaded and used the rumor of her sons bastardy (this time both in the book and in the series) years ago (which could've, if believed, led to the death or banishment of her children).
Why should she believe that after all that (plus Alicent undermining her in the small council) Alicent would be against the war and bloodshed (even considering that she took part in Jahaerys funerals, which are considered to be a political move against her [Rhaenyra])? It's like if i built a tennis court and then acted all surprised people are playing tennis in it.
*This brings me to another thought. I may have written what i did in this post out of the rush of the moment (which is likely since it happens when i comment live 😅), but I can't take back what I said about the uselessness of contaction Alicent of all people.
If Rhaenys mant to say that Alicent did not permit the bloodsheds that happened then why would she be willing to advice Rhaenyra to speak with Alicent? She took part in a political move (Jahaerys funerals) against her so, assuming that Rhaenyra and Rhaenys believe that she was forced to do that, she's to be considere a 'doll' that is being used around. 'She's still in the council' but she's either ignoring what's happening (so basically permitting it) or she's being ignored. If the blacks were to assume the second option (which would still be a huge risk since they can't know for sure and again Alicent did what she did in the past), why would her route be considered an easy or alternative one? I would say that it's to be considered an impossible one. 'But they don't know if she's taking part in the council' even worse, how is she going to do anything then?? 'She can talk to her son' she could've done it before and if she did that before (which she did) it would've meant that he didn't listen to her.
Book Rhaenys wanted to attack and destroy the greens with the dragons. It was Daemon who wanted to act with diplomacy at first. The writers sort of switched their characters and sure, one can say it's fine (since apparently it's a heinous crime for showwriters to adapt accurately a book) but I really miss book Rhaenys.

I feel like I’m going insane lmaooo
Because I don’t hate the movie, it gives me “greater insight” to see… the actual plot of the movie?? What kind of logic is that?? Just because you don’t like it doesn’t mean it’s dogshit? Like yeah it isn’t without criticism, but really now.
“Everyone was content [until she learns *her* family’s wishes won’t be granted]” like. Hello? What part of her saying “you make them forget” did not land??? Of course they were content when they were brainwashed and fed lies (the repeated “give without regret” line is actually sinister!). And while yes it started with her grandpa, she was horrified when she realizes, and the king confirms, that most of the kingdom’s wis/hes will just be kept there, while the people — who have been *changed* because they gave up the best part of them without truly realizing what that meant — continue living in a bubble of the king’s own making
Like I really do feel like people didn’t actually watch the movie or, if they did, did so with one eye open just so they can continue being angry at it for whatever reason

there's a lot of lines in tma that upon re-listening are devastating to hear, but one of the worst ones imo is during mag41's supplemental, when jon says with utter conviction and resolve, "trust can get you killed."
