Why you should not let Astarion ascend.
Okay keep in mind the following:
1. Mephistopheles the devil doesn't make a deal with Cazador to destroy 7k souls. They are NOT destined to be absorbed by Cazador or Astarion. It might look like that but why would a devil ever agree to let another being do that and turn over power for nothing?
2. The souls are clearly a part of a trade. All 7k souls are going to hell and probably getting minted into soul coins to fuel infernal machines. They will then be destroyed as they power those machines. Keep in mind that's a lot of fuel! A very sudden influx too. If not they'll become cannon fodder or labor for the blood war.
3. Even if you decide to keep Astarion a spawn and kill all 7k vamps some of those souls collected might end up in the hells if they were bad people or left unclaimed by a god or godness. Not as bad as all 7k but still do we want that much blood on Astarion's and the pc hands? To actually be a part of not just killing but destroying that many souls? Many of us would not.
4. True it sucks they'll kill some a lot of innocents but remember keeping them alive keeps them out of the hells. And again, keep in mind that by making Astarion into an Ascendant vampire the pc is pretty much helping Mephistopheles turn the tide of the blood war in the hells. The thing is that's a bad-really bad. The Bad (Devils) and Worse (Demons) need to keep fighting with each other so they don't turn their focus on Faerun.
This is one very pragmatic reason to not let him Ascend regardless of one's feelings towards Astarion. It's a shame the game doesn't spell this out more clearly.

Kitty leans against the tree and scowls at the lanky, pasty boy sprawled in the grass beside her.
“How are you not sunburnt,” she huffs. “This is unfair.”
“Genetics.”
“Cheating.”
He shrugs, lazy and unbothered.
“If that helps you cope, sure.”
It does not. Her nose is peeling off from maybe half an hour's worth of Outside and he doesn't have so much as a mosquito bite. This is deeply unfair.
“Tell me your secret,” she demands. “Tell me how nature doesn't destroy you for leaving the house.”
“I offered a blood sacrifice.”
She probably shouldn't laugh. It's not funny, it shouldn't be, but...that old bat was really just so awful. It's not like she didn't have it coming.
“God, you've no shame.”
“Not a drop.” He stretches, eyes fluttering half-open. “You are red, aren't you?”
“Wow!”
“It'll wear off.”
“You don't have to rub it in!”
He gives her an easy grin and drawls, “I was startled, that's all.”
“Humph. I was going to see if you wanted to stay for dinner, but if that's how you're going to be…”
“I beg your forgiveness,” he deadpans. “Truly. I grovel.”
Sometimes she wants to murder him. Sometimes--usually at the same time--she wants to kiss him. She never has, but she thinks it might be nice. It would shut him up, first of all, and second of all, it would probably make him blush and stammer and he's adorable when he does that.
(She'll never say that out loud. He might make an effort to not if she does.)
“I dunno,” she says now. “There was no reason to remind me that I look like a tomato.”
“Your words, not mine.”
“You admit it! You admit I look like a tomato!”
He just laughs at her, the smug bastard. He laughs more now than he did when she first met him. She can't blame him for that. Even living alone in that creepy old house is better than the alternative.
(She’d never have let him leave. Never. One way or another, she’d have kept him there.)
Still, though, she can’t let him get away with this; she sticks her tongue out at him, because it’s too hot for much else. That does exactly nothing.
Ugh.
He finally shuts up, looking off somewhere behind her. She’s not going to look. She knows this trick, this ‘there’s something behind you, I swear’, and if she turns around at last, he’ll scare her. Not this time, Jonathan Crane, absolutely not. She’s not falling for that again!
But he is looking very intently.
“What?”
“Deer,” he breathes. “They don’t usually get so close.”
She doesn’t trust him. But she is curious…
“Don’t scare me,” she whispers, and when he gives her a quirk of the lips that…might be agreement…she turns around.
It’s not just a deer, it’s a deer with two fawns. They’re cute, gangly things, picking their way across the field behind their mother. They don’t stop to graze, or even to look around; they just disappear on into the trees in the direction of the cemetery.
“They chew bones, you know,” Jonathan says quietly. She didn’t hear him sit up. “They eat birds, too, if they’re still in the nest.”
“I didn’t really need to sleep tonight, thanks.”
“You’re welcome.”
He’s got grass in his hair and his shirt’s half-pulled over to one side, revealing a mostly healed scratch on his collarbone. That was the last time. He’d been–God, a picture from Hell, pale and bleeding and wet, and…
If he hadn’t killed her, Kitty thinks she would have killed him.
She doesn’t realize she’s focused on it so much until he reaches over and guides her face upwards with nervous fingers.
“It’ll heal.”
“It shouldn’t have to.”
“But it will.” He hasn’t dropped his hand and his fingers are warm, almost burning against her jawbone. “They always do.”
He’s lucky, if that’s a word to use. Lucky he hasn’t lost an eye, or fingers, or died of some sort of infection, or–oh!
She always supposed she’d kiss him eventually. At least once, just for…just because. She would have bet money she’d have to do it first, because he’s shy and nervous and just…not…the type to do it first.
She would have been wrong.
He pulls back, pink already sweeping up his cheeks (she knew it would!) and before he can say anything, she tugs him back.

So, I’m doing calculations on approximately how expensive it would be for Johnny and Marcus to live where they do in the Sing Universe (its version of Los Angelos, California) compared to the average mechanics salary in that area...
...Needless to say, I don’t blame them fo becoming robbers in the slightest. Because these numbers are really depressing. Like they wouldn’t be out of debt until Johnny’s great great grandkids are dying depressing. And downright terrifying.

SAN FRANCISCO - San Francisco's mayor is pushing for Proposition E, broadening police powers. But, civil liberty advocates are warning these new powers will erode privacy and reduce oversight.
Proposition E comes out of the mayor's office and so far has gotten a lot of attention for allowing police to use surveillance technology, but the proposition also would allow police discretion on when to chase suspects.
The proposition would allow police to begin using new technology like drones and cameras, reduce the paperwork for officers to get them back on the streets faster, and would change the city's pursuit policy to allow officers to pursue suspects in non-violent felonies and violent misdemeanors.
Michael Hsu said that would have helped him after burglars recently hit his shop, Footprint. He said police showed up just as those burglars were leaving, but the officers couldn't chase those suspects down. "But, after watching the video they let them go,'" Hsu said. "That's when I called the police station and said, 'what happened?' and they told me they couldn't give chase due to some policy."
The head of the San Francisco's Police Officers Association, Tracy McCray said her organization also backs Prop E. She said current policy ties up her officers and in many cases prevents them from apprehending repeat offenders. "We don't need policies that are filled with, basically ideological bulls*t," McCray said. "We don't need that. What we need is common sense."
Mayor London Breed put the proposition on the ballot saying it would help police serve the city better. "Our police officers are not stupid," said Mayor Breed. "They know the difference, and they know what they probably would need to do in order to make the right decision to ensure that the public is safe in any pursuit."
But privacy and civil liberty groups are warning about Prop E, calling it a year-long experiment that would roll back protections voters explicitly put in place just four years ago. The American Civil Liberties Union of Northern California has called the proposition an attempt to exploit voters’ frustrations with crime to distract from an unpopular mayor’s record.
"Proposition E would let the San Francisco Police Department hide officer violence by reducing the information police collect when reporting use-of-force incidents," their statement read. They said SFPD data from 2022 shows the department is more likely to use force on Black people than white people.
The Electronic Frontier Foundation called Prop E a looming threat to privacy and civil liberties, saying the proposition would eliminate oversight and give police free rein to use what it calls unproven and dangerous technology. "And this is an absolute recipe for civil rights violations and an increase in discriminatory policing," Matthew Guariglia from the Electronic Frontier Foundation said.
