Dragon Ball Super Manga Ch. 77-80
Tumblr media
When I first read this, I was pissed because I’m sick of Vegeta just knowing everything that happened to every Saiyan before they were wiped out.  I mean, he was a kid back then, how would he know Goku’s dad?
Then I finally remembered Vegeta grew up with Goku’s brother, and it suddenly made sense.
Tumblr media
Okay, so let’s back up a bit and go over why Granolah wants revenge in the first place.  About forty-odd years ago the Cerealians were invaded by Frieza’s forces, including a lot of Saiyans.  I think they showed some other aliens in Frieza uniforms, but it’s mainly Saiyans using Oozaru forms.  The Cerealians managed to neutralize the giant ape business, but the Saiyans were still strong enough to kill them all.  There was also a small community of Namekians living on the planet Cereal, and they all died as well.  There were only two survivors: The Namekian Monaito, who inherited the Cerealian Dragon Balls from the village elder, and Granolah, who found refuge in a building with his mother.
However, Granolah and his mom were discovered by a Saiyan named Bardock.  He probably would have killed them on sight, except they happened to remind him of...
Tumblr media
His wife and newborn son, whom he saw recently before this mission.  Turns out Bardock was the one who came up with the name “Kakarot.”
Tumblr media
So instead of killing the two Cerealians, Bardock tells the rest of his squad that he’s going to stay behind to take out any survivors.  Then he scans the area and locates Monaito.  He then takes Granolah and his mom to Monaito and asks him to take them in.  Then he leaves, or he tries to, anyway.
Afterwards, Granolah grew up craving revenge on the Saiyans and Frieza, and he must have had no memory of Bardock’s act of mercy.  Monaito’s known all along, and he kept it a secret this whole time, but he’s telling Granolah now because he wants him to stop his attack on Goku and Vegeta.  And as he explains all this, he notices that Goku bears a striking resemblance to Bardock, and that’s when Vegeta explains that Bardock was Goku’s father.
But wait, if Bardock saved Granolah’s mother, then who killed her?  Ah, well you see...
Tumblr media
Shortly after Bardock saved those guys, the Heeters showed up.  They worked as planet brokers under Frieza, so once Planet Cereal was vacant, they started making plans to sell it to the Sugarians.  Naturally, they planned to overcharge the Sugurians and give Frieza a modest cut.
Tumblr media
But then they happened across Bardock, Monaito, Granolah and his mom, and Bardock had to pretend that he was preparing to take Monaito prisoner to cover his tracks.  Elec then shot Granolah’s mom just to simplify things.  This infuriated Bardock, who then attacked the Heeters, which led to a fight with Gas.  Bardock won that day, although Monaito didn’t get to see that part, for some reason.
So why didn’t Monaito tell Granolah about the Heeters?  Why didn’t he say anything when Granolah started working for them?
Tumblr media
Because Monaito knew he’d go off on some half-baked revenge scheme and get himself killed.  This is probably why Monaito allowed Granolah to believe it was the Saiyans who did it, because once Frieza destroyed their home planet, there was no one for Granolah to go after, and he seemed to understand that Frieza was too strong.  But that backfired on Monaito, because once Granolah found out about Frieza returning and some Saiyans still being alive, he... went off on some half-baked revenge scheme.
Anyway, Elec knew Granolah had talent, and since he never knew about the whole murdered-his-mom thing, Elec thought he could recruit him for his organization.  After that, Monaito couldn’t tell him the truth, because Elec would kill them both.
Tumblr media
Anyway, while all this exposition is happening, the Heeters find the Cerealian Dragon Balls and make their wish...
Tumblr media
... which is basically the same wish Granolah made at the beginning of this arc, only they asked for Gas to become the strongest warrior in the universe.  And since the wish was granted, that means Gas must be even stronger than Granolah is.
Tumblr media
So they fight, and Granolah gets his ass kicked.  Gas’ whole deal is that he uses energy constructs, sort of like Green Lantern but without the ring.  This isn’t a new power he got, it’s something he’s always been able to do, and through much of this battle, he tries to win with the power he had before Elec made the wish.
Tumblr media
Goku comes up with a plan to handle Gas.  He wants Vegeta to eat his senzu bean and fight with Ultra Ego again, but Vegeta left the bean in his armor, which he took off while fighting Granolah.  So first he has to go find it, and Goku will try to hold Gas off in the meantime.
Tumblr media
But Vegeta gives the senzu bean to Granolah instead, insisting that he’s the one who wants revenge on these guys, so it should be him who settles things.
Tumblr media
On his way to fight Gas, Granolah makes up with Oatmeel and puts him back on, assuring the computer than they’re a team.  Awww.
Tumblr media
So this is just Gas vs. Granolah, with Goku and Vegeta reduced to spectators.  It’s an interesting choice to say the least.  Gas should have the advantage on power, but Granolah stays competitive for a few reasons.
1) Gas doesn’t want to use his full strength, because he thinks he should be able to win with the power he had before the wish.  That doesn’t work, so he eventually relents and uses his full power, but he wastes a lot of valuable time and energy this way.
2) Gas hasn’t fought much at all in this arc, mainly because Elec always wanted to keep him in reserve as a last resort. We know he fought Bardock decades ago (and lost), so he’s clearly gotten a lot stronger, even without that wish to beef him up, but he lacks experience with this power.  Granolah had the same problem when he fought Goku and Vegeta, but now he’s got the advantage, because he... just got done fighting Goku and Vegeta.  If he can beat those two, he can hold his own against Gas.
3) Granolah has his Cerelian perception, which makes his attacks far more precise than anything Gas can do.
Tumblr media
It’s also possible that Gas’s heart just isn’t in this.  He seems distant from the priorities of the other Heeters.  When he has difficulty fighting, Elec removes the headband of teeth from his head.  The other Heeter wear these like necklaces, and apparently they’re not decoaritive.  Somehow they restrain their powers, and if you remove them, they become stronger, but also go berserk.  Wonder Woman’s bracelets used to work this way.  If she lost them, she’d go apeshit and kick everyone’s ass.
Tumblr media
According to Monaito, the same thing happened when Bardock fought Gas forty years ago.  Gas took off his headband thing and transformed into a gonzo monster.  Bardock won somehow, but Gas is far more powerful now, and this time he attacks everybody.  But Elec isn’t worried, because if Gas is truly the strongest in the universe now, then he ought to be able to regain control over himself.
Tumblr media
And that’s exactly what he does.  Not sure how he got his clothes back after he hulked out of them, but maybe the dragon gave him the Clothes Beam technique along with all the other upgrades.
And this brings me to the end of volume 18 of Dragon Ball Super.  Volume 19 won’t be published in English until September, and I don’t want to wait that long, so I guess I’ll have to find the next several chapters elsewhere. So hopefully I can pick this up tomorrow...
Tumblr media
Oh, right, Bardock.
So, Bardock showing up in this arc caused a lot of agitation in the fandom.  I think this was mostly because of lingering frustration with Dragon Ball Minus retconning all the Bardock lore from the 1990 TV special.  That, and there’s also a lot of Bardock Fatigue in the fandom, because the franchise has been shoehorning Bardock into every video game and merchandise possible.  For many, working him into the DBS manga was just another crass marketing ploy.
Also, chapter 77 marks the moment when Goku finally learns about his father, which is a big deal for the character, but a milestone like that is always going to be controversial, because there will be fans who think the series was better off when Goku didn’t know.  It’s like when Clark Kent told Lois he was really Superman.  You can’t unring that bell.
I... don’t particularly care about any of that.  For my part, Bardock’s a cool character, and I don’t mind seeing him or his cute wife.  Anything Toei or Shueisha does with Goku’s parents is a fair play in my book.  It’s no different from having Tien or Android 17 show up.  But there seems to be this special status that’s been assigned to Bardock, where he’s either too cool or too overexposed, and that makes him off-limits.  Well, I don’t buy into made-up rules like that.
I get the sense that there’s this edgelord contingent of the fandom that wouldn’t accept any version of Bardock short of him murdering Granolah’s mom and eating Monaito’s face or something.  I don’t understand these fans, because the “Father of Goku” special is just Bardock getting the shit kicked out of him from start to finish.  Tooru kicks him in the head, then he goes to Planet Meat and Dodoria beats him up, then he flies to Planet Vegeta and dies to Frieza.  How is this guy a badass?  Because he dominated Dodoria’s goon squad?  Well Guldo could one-shot all of them, so why isn’t everyone fawning over Guldo then?
People got mad because Bardock said “tummy”, which isn’t a very badass word to use.  You never hear Guldo say “tummy”, and he’s hard as nails.  My thing is, if you imagine Sonny Strait delivering the line in that cool voice he uses, it sounds a lot more natural.  Yeah, if he said it in the Krillin voice, it’d be goofy, which is why he doesn’t use the same voice for both characters.
I’d chalk it up to a translation issue, really.  I mean, it’s probably accurate, but the people at Viz should have used different wording.  Sometimes you have to punch up the dialogue, make it sound more like something Guldo would say.
The point I’m trying to make is that Bardock isn’t some sacred cow, and he’s also not a third rail that the franchise is forbidden from using.  Dragon Ball Super brought back the Mafuba and the Grand Supreme Kai and the guy Zarbon kicked on Namek.  Of course they were going to do something with Bardock.  I’m more surprised that they didn’t just have him time travel to present-day Earth and live in Goku’s house for a while.

Frieza's Analysis #0. New series.
I wanted to start a new blog series aside from the Zamasu' glog, but, this time with more of an analytic approach. Here i wanted to analyse Frieza and his species in general, how they function and etc.
I will base it off mainline dragon ball series, including Cooler and potentially Kuriza. Xenoverse npcs or cacs wont be included into this deepdive.
Also.
I refuse to call this race arcosians, nor i will call their homeworld Arcos, even if i do call it such within RP, due to my rp friends doing so.
Arcosians are a completely different race, introduced in Z before Frieza Force concept appeared in manga. It was simply a race thar supplied saiyans with tech in exchange for planets. Moreso partners, like Heeters are to Frieza, rather than superiors.
These are Arcosians.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
They have nothing to do with Frieza's race. Frieza Force simply replaced them as narrative supportive force.
So. I will rather keep calling them frost demons, as Cell calls them in Xenoverse, or icejins, another fan name that has no misconception as arcosians do.
My apology to Arcos enjoyers. It is not same race.
First blog post will be about Frieza' evolutions and why they look as they do, before i deepdive into homeworld analysis based off anatomy.
P.s: All said in next episodes of this series will be mostly headcanons, based on mainline series. Mostly theoretic.

I'm the only fucker who ever talks about Seven-Three bc I'm insane but it's Cherry's friend because the force definitely raided the heeter's base after their arc ended and in my head Seven-Three was just. There. Left behind. And seeing them in that half dead state still regenerating in their tube triggers Cherry's autism empathy and he just takes it home. It's his responsibility now.

The events of the planet Namek saga within universe 7 were both significant within the realm from which the series follows the plot, however as we move forward in the story, we see background characters reacting appropriately to the environmental changes brought up by the Z warriors and those who their strength attracts.
In the DBS Super Hero movie, we see the aftermath of the Namek saga brought back to the foreground as a plot element to link the main story yo events that were hypothetically brewing in the background, as this serves the explorative writing structure of Toriyama, and makes it easier to introduce fighters to fight in the Shonen.
The Gammas came as a response to an insignificant moment to the world's plot (in-universe) being given significance through the story's need to have Hedo on the villains side, and I argue that once the plot resolves, we will see a plot line coming out of the aftermath of the change in status quo after news broke out that Frieza was able to be defeated.
From a galactic citizen's perspective, the existence of the Frieza clan is just a reality they need to live around, either as customers or subjects. However the news of Frieza's failure of the overtaking of Namek would not be associated with the Dragon Balls, as that would be classified information from the force, but the knowledge of their "Excursion To Namek" could be heavily propagandized, and failure could have been felt similarly to US in Vietnam.
We have evidence that Frost was running similar propaganda campaigns on universe 6, however I feel like the bureaucratic side of the empire would be ran similarly, while the force itself is the brutal army that is depicted in the series, something that you don't see as a galactic citizen in the series.
The Granolah arc brings some insights as to the lives of those very same citizens, living in a bubble, unaware of the majority of the decisions that come before a settlement can be built on a planet. I argue that several of the plot elements established in this arc are foreshadowing for what I allude to here.
The Heeter clan is an example of the power vacuum created by Frieza'a absence, and is only a small fraction of what surely remains unseen as resistances rose, and how morality must have dropped for those holding out hope when the emperor of the universe returned.
Now I argue that while the training goalposts will be surpassing Black Frieza, we will come to find him beaten to a pulp by another party before he can properly take the antagonist role again.
I also argue that Frieza may know something the readers don't, and that his display of strength was meant to push the monkeys further, because they will need to combine forces again.
I don't think the evil angel plot is that farfetched as it was meant to appear through the ToP extrapolative memes, so when associated with Gohan Blanco (which became real) it seemed silly.
There is enough secrecy and elements pointing towards something in that realm of existence for fighters to pursue, and I also think Frieza might take on a permanent ally role due to Frieza growing as a fighter and reaching similar conclusions as the main cast through training.
But he is racist enough to not care despite making these conclusions, and is staying a hater that fills in the role of Majima prompting random brawls to occur through provocation rather than through threats, but I never see him sparring with the core sayain team unless specifically training as a team for another tournament of power style event, which I think is in the future.
Crisis on infinite earths kinda deal bridging/overlapping all universes and causing chaos, with a central force overtaking Zeno's power to interfere through sealing the God room, potentially as a rebellious angelic takeover.
We saw an interest in recruiting Frieza for something similar before the ToP, but it was vague at best.

Would Frieza be the smart guy or the gremlin? Or would the GInyu force be a better fit...
The Heeters kind of work with this lineup, but I hesitate to call Elec smart.

Mousse is the 1st character that make me fall in love & start drawing, hidden weapons is his fighting style. Nowadays, I draw fan arts of Gas, a character that use many weapons too! This is fate!!
Mousse is character of Ranma1/2, Ranma 1/2 is comic series drawn by Rumiko Takahashi, & released anime at early 90s. My 1st meet of Ranma 1/2 was their SFC games.

about your last post about frieza do you think he would be as strong as he is now if he never met Goku in the first place? Like in a different dimension where goku didn't survive when he was child? Do you think he would be able to ever be who he is today? Like I know there is Vegeta but would he be able to reach super Saiyan with out meeting Goku too? I don't know. In a way it seems that Goku was a turning point for a lot of people. In an alternate reality it would be interesting to see how Frieza would evolve without this turning point
If Frieza never met Goku, I can tell you exactly what would have happened.
(Dragon Ball what if: What if Frieza Never met Goku)
-Bardock ignored is suspicious feeling about Frieza's plan and Goku died on the planet along with the rest of the Saiyans (save for Vegeta Raditz and Nappa)
-With Goku not on earth, Raditz wouldnt have come to pick up his brother. Its Likely Kami seals away Piccolo after he caused too much destruction.
-Frieza would likely never have heard of the Dragonballs, and would continue running his empire. (At least not at the time we know of them)
-Everything for Frieza would probably be fine until Babidi tried to get to earth to get energy.
-Frieza may have known everything going on, and likely heard about someone trying to bring back Majin buu.
-So knowing what his Father told him, he would likely try and prevent him from showing up.
-Now knowing Frieza acted Preemptively (like with the saiyans). My bet is Frieza probably killed Babidi before he got to earth, and before he had Dabura as a slave.
-Frieza was ALWAYS cautious. So my bet is he did do this.
-And if he didnt, well Dabura probably gave a bunch of energy and Buu was revived.
-Now in the first scenario, then Frieza continues his conquest and its not an issue until Beerus shows up, who probably would just leave frieza be, as he basically did his job for him.
-Maybe the Universe 6 tournament happens but really its hard to say if it does. As Champa has no reason to want to switch earths.
-Zamasu never saw the tournament and likely remained content with things. So no Goku black.
-Moro may have gotten his magic back a bit, but he would likely just be wandering around without knowledge of how to get his powers back without hearing of the dragonballs
-Then we finally get to Granolah. Who knows about the Dragonballs and has access to them. He would wish to be the Strongest in the Universe.
-Now Frieza wouldnt care about some room where time flows differently, because he wouldnt need to train. So he wouldnt be outside of the universe.
-Granolah's wish works and he becomes the strongest.
-Odds are now that he made the wish, his life force might be shortened. But considering how much less strong the universe is... His life force hasnt shortened that much. More then he would have liked, but not that much. Also, Vegeta and the remaining Saiyans, Nappa and Raditz likely are still around. And causing destruction.
-Granolah would likely ask the Heeters where those Saiyans were first. They would shrug and tell him, not really caring that much what happens.
-Granolah easily kills them with his new power and then decides to go for Frieza. My bet is he took one of the scouters from likely Vegeta and went to go fight Frieza.
-Frieza hearing about their deaths thinks not much of it. Likely figuring they met their end. He only wishes he could have ended them himself.
-More of Frieza's soldiers die, and Frieza decides to come out of the woodwork. Annoyed by this welp.
-Granolah kills Frieza. The Strongest in the universe would have no trouble. Assuming the gods were excluded. The strongest being would likely be Dabura (If the Underworld/Demon Realm wasnt included) Probably Frieza was the Strongest BEFORE the wish. Regardless Frieza dies by Granolah's hands.
-And that would be it. Frieza dies because he wasnt willing to train.

Ok but am I about to Rant?
...You know what? Fuck it.
Why not, I'm gonna end the year talking about something nobody really cares but I certainly do for whatever reason: Dragon Ball Super, babyyyyyy.
Specifically the Granolah Arc.
(In advance, thank you for reading.)
Genuinely, I have like a lot to criticize about it but for those who need a refresh or have no idea what I'm about to say but still wanna read my thoughts anyways lemme do a quick summary for you.
The story continues from the resolution of the prior arc, as a power copying enemy known as Seventhree is salvaged by it's creator. Before this guy could do anything though, the titular Granolah trounces and steals the Android.
We find out he's the last of his race, and had his planet wiped out by Saiyans working under Frieza back then. He's serving a faction known as the Heeters, they sell planets but work under intel over force, now holding their own monopoly after Frieza's first death.
Keyword: FIRST. Now that he's back, they are in trouble and tell as much to Granolah, whose trauma kicks in and wants nothing but vengeance, but of course, he's too weak. Though the Heeters start to carefully plot around this development thanks to SevenThree's memory helping them get caught up with last arc's development and our heroes.
Granolah returns to his planet and the topic comes out with his caretaker, a namekian elder. Reminded of their set of 2 Dragon Balls and with the finding of the missing one, Granolah wishes to become the strongest (At a cost) and demands to see Frieza.
The Heeters, of course, tell him to stay put and set in motion their plan: Get rid of Granolah before he destroys the empire they wanna overtale by tricking Goku and Vegeta into coming, while they wish their toughest member, Gas, to be THE strongest to then kill Frieza.
After a long brawl between our heroes trying to talk Granolah down, the elder is forced to reveal some truths: A Saiyan (Bardock) saved them and the Heeters killed his mom actually, he couldn't reveal it prior as Granolah was put to work with them in exchange for their safety.
Thus, Gas turns into the strongest and faces the now teamed up trio who are vastly outmatched as he continues to grow, little by little wearing him down until Frieza's surprising arrival, who wipes out Gas in one clean sweep and leaves Goku and Vegeta with the bitter feeling of being left behind powerwise.
With Granolah now giving up on his vengeance, Goku finding out more about his father and adapting Ultra Instinct in his own way, and Vegeta fueling his newfound Ultra Ego form with his feelings on the Saiyan's past, the gang says their goodbyes and set off.
People with familiarity on the arc will notice me describing the entire second half of it in three paragraphs. And this is for sure not a mistake: This IS the relevant information of that section. So you know, we'll be here for a while when I get there. :)
Tumblr media
So like, was the arc bad from the start?
No. Much like the grand majority of DBS, I think it's got one of, if not the most promising start so far, because as it stands, the arc set in motion a very character centric narrative over something with a bigger plot in motion. This is actually the most enjoyable part of it which we hardly get in this series at all, so it feels fucking good when people come to blows because we have so much baggage on each side the clash gets hype, much like how DBS: Broly toyed with (Or you know, how Battle Shonen that go hard do it).
Granolah is an interesting character, despite having his arc rushed at the very end and with some missed out chances. Already having seen a similar concept with Baby from GT, we know the idea of a surviving race member of a wipeout from the Saiyans writes itself. Not to mention his unique aspects such as his trauma or his combat quirks help him stand out beyond the cool design. He's also integrated into the world with as much grace as the new group, the Heeters, who serve as our "people to punch" this arc.
Tumblr media
From the duo of Maki and Oil proving to be a little more comedic than threatening but still effective, and the cunning Elec being modestly entertaining, they don't feel out of place in the world of DB. Gas in particular I'm going to put off for now, but know that his interactions with Elec is what make the latter vastly more unique in terms of narrative role. Commander Red comes to mind but if he was played entirely straight. I think they serve the narrative pretty damn fine without the need to go beyond as characters, Gas nonwithstanding.
Tumblr media
When it comes to Goku and Vegeta's role in the story, the latter gets the most out of it. His training with Beerus, his theraphy session with Granolah, his showcase of the Ultra Ego to an extent and him getting to interact with the Saiyan's past in a fresh way. They have never fucking fumbled Vegeta since the "doing the same thing as before but worse" allegations from prior arcs, which is a strong positive for his fans, but yeah, he doesn't get any Ws lmao.
With Goku, we have... Things happening for sure, of varying qualities, but the praises are getting short on that end, so I'm going to save it for later. On paper, I do appreciate the attempt to do more with this character and he still is not the weakest part of the character centric narrative.
In general, the central core of said narrative is one of the more interesting and cool so far. It makes the entire portion of the fight against Granolah all the better, not to mention that section having bouts of good coreography and action. I love having an enemy worth punching in a series where punching people happens so much they can be souless bricks to punch, especially if the bricks aren't interesting unlike, say, Frieza.
Tumblr media
Speaking of, he turned out the be the funniest, most shocking element in this arc. Like not even as a joke, his presence is a legit highlight from the sheer absurdity of his impact. He barely gets foreshadowed at the first half, with the asumption it's the character who is most commonly tied to everybody what makes you think of him at all times, and isn't even used until the very last minute. But when he DOES show up, he ONE SHOTS GAS, VEGETA AND GOKU, claims to have been OUT OF RANGE for the "make me the strongest" wish to account for him, found a HYPERBOLIC TIME CHAMBER in space and proceedes to brag that he knew what's up and that got a brand new form only to LEAVE.
It's truly a chaotic shock to the system which matches the ridicolousness of Dragon Ball Heroes whipping out a new Broly out of nowhere every anniversary or so, but in an oddly positive way. Like you could've done more with the concept but honestly I can't truly be mad with the sheer boldness in display. But that's because... Well...
Tumblr media
So like, is the second half bad or what?
I can certainly say the ending woke me up. But it's kinda fucked up how once Granolah stopped being the opponent everything else kinda crumbles into fighting a boring nothing character with no connection to the heroes and progression being constantly halted JUST so we can attempt to give this opponent some fluff.
Let's be fair: Gas holds his own with Granolah padding and brick personality aside, there is some setup to their rivalry and the backstory works, albeit motion is wasted to highlight aspects that only come out now instead of beforehand: The fact that he was envious, the stubborn devotion to his own techniques, Granolah feeling anything beyond towards him, etc. Still works fine, still patched up now.
There's also his relationship with Elec as a highlight, the former manipulating him and hyping him up in spite of Gas doubting himself, showing devotion and loyalty back to Elec and even being grateful he made him strong as he is, which is kinda tragic once he realizes what he becomes.
But I can't fucking caaaaare.
I believe the core problem with Gas is that they waited too fucking long to start showing his development and choosing the very distracting battle that HALTS ALL PROGRESSION to try and do something with him.
Tumblr media
This is also after the big break which was the Bardock flashback, we'll get to that, but since the goal became his defeat and he has no one to bounce from naturally, the second Goku steps up as the main opponent (After the fight has had MANY twists and he powered up several times) everything resets completely harder than when each form turned the tides. Because Goku still had no internal change, he doesn't remember Bardock yet, and the story didn't think of bringing Gas along to recruit Goku and Vegeta and build THEIR personal rivalry outside of Bardock's impact on Gas after defeating him so it feels limp without the connective tissue.
So what we have is a scene which deadass could've played like this:
Tumblr media
Their goal is to kill Frieza. They did not want to waste time. They literally just believed they killed Granolah and incapacitated both Goku and Vegeta. What are they gonna fucking do? Defend Frieza? They don't fucking care if he dies again, maybe they wanna fight them, but it would provide a fucking change of scenery which hasn't happened since the start of all the fighting. Gas too, like, sure, he would want to kill them for knowing too much but at this point NO ONE is a threat.
As a result the jawdropping moment of Ultra Ego and Ultra Instinct together feels wasted on a very lame opponent. The revelation Goku has to use Ultra Instinct his own way is just kinda there because Gas is the least important part of said development. The epic struggle to take him down feels done already.
It's tiring. Really tiring. No matter how fancy the techniques, the core character is being built as we speak in a narrative that SOLELY focused on characters on the last minute. And I can't care as a result.
Speaking of breaking progression and being tiring, we also need to talk about a little something.
Tumblr media
This is another joke page, dw.
But uh, anyone feels like the first flashback would've been enough? Technically, they could skim on HOW Bardock defeated Gas interrupting an already glacial paced conflict, especially not without any substantial information to the characters, Goku's development aside.
Bardock doesn't feel entirely realized either. I appreciate the fact they are trying to bridge the gap between Minus and Z Bardock to make it look like it's mostly the same character but it's not until he's fighting where this seems to be at play.
He feels like he's on autopilot on his own plot thread. There's feeling his actions are arbitrary (To the point of needing a flashback within one for justification) as him being conveniently set up to be there, rather than let his character flow naturally. His impact is felt across the characters but "just so happens to be there" is not the card they play. This isn't a rando — Nonono, this is Goku's Dad™, therefore he MUST be important... Which goes against the core idea of making Minus Bardock and Z Bardock the same character, but topic for another time.
Point is: When the story could've chosen to use the Saiyans as a positive influence (A loaded statement but yet another topic for some other time), they really chose to tell this story in a rather clunky way, contradicting the core idea of a typical Saiyan without exploring Bardock's uniqueness regarding it (If he has it) when we need it to buy into it. We're coming off from the character from Minus, you HAVE to expand on it because that one had ALSO next to nothing going for him.
So yeah, I may be beating this aspect way too much but in hindsight, if the story decided it should be focused heavily for breaks between fight while also having a half that is meandering just to trigger Goku's memories, then maybe they should've thought about it a little more when telling this story.
Tumblr media
Which leads us to perhaps the biggest weakness of writing for DB: Getting Goku involved in the plot without him feeling less like a problem solving plot device they are forced to keep out the action. He's active, sure, but he has no connection to anybody, so what do?
His arc this time around is Ultra Instinct being a technique Goku needs to improve on despite everyone in the fandom swearing that the one we were calling MASTERED Ultra Instinct for years wasn't really it. As such, he has to find a path to use it on his own, which obviously means "dodge on your base form" but there's more to it: He has to learn and stop mimicking Whis when doing so.
The solution is simple and it works in every aspect but to make UI less impactful, but asuming we saw that coming and we don't mind, this leaves Goku accepting his emotions instead of repressing them while using UI, thus getting the most out of the Sign form.
...And it's kinda disconnected to everything? They tacked in Bardock's sole focus on his drive to win as a catalyst which is why they used the second flashback, and that kinda gets a little lost when this still doesn't tie him to Gas and with how little that statement says on it's own. "He has the same determined look" doesn't work and the Sign reveal loses a lot of impact, so what we're left is with what feels like a very random power up.
This scene of Goku recovering his memories is used as a superficial aspect as a result, because the memories themselves don't make for anything beyond one disconnected touching moment. It's even lacking impact on Goku as a character because he sure knows the thing which never mattered to his core identity at all save for being a fighting freak, it would be nice if this was important as it wants to be. But that's it. Him being positively in touch with his Saiyan side internally has always been a thing, he's supposed to be the opposite of the stereotypical one, so yeah, sure. It's not awfully offensive but it sure feels wasted.
Tumblr media
Wait, that's it? Those are your takes?
Listen, you probably expected me to go off over the new set of DBs making the story lame with how anyone can wish for strength or what I think about the new forms and how I think they are either ugly or cool, but like, I feel there was a bigger urge to talk about the core narrative problems and less about the window dressing of the action. The balls have always been in a downward spiral to becoming too convenient already, and forms as punctuations for progression is like, tiring but it works visually, it's not a specific problem to the arc but the series as a whole.
Overral, I just feel uneven about it. The character driven conflict is obviously gonna leave you with a lot of holes if you don't keep it PERSONAL so the failure to do something so cool with DB hurts a lot. Undeniably though it's first half was the best part of this entire Manga on setup alone.
The second half is an atrocity however that makes me call the arc trash without the hesitation that I should be having. The fighting? Drags on with a nothing opponent. The opponent? Boring us to death as momentum has to stop to develop them. The developments? Tied to Bardock between breaks in a couple of flashbacks, used sloppily with a protagonist that feels uneven. Our actual protagonist? Hardly there.
Frieza coming back to end the arc feels cathartic on top of hilarious as a result. It's a spit to the face to the whole of it. And it's not horrendous as the Future Trunks Arc's ending thanks to at least having promises for the upcoming stories and ultimately being more interesting too.
o(-(
I don't know. This especially sucks because we were going so hard on something amazing like always but DBS just has a mystifying way to fuck things up for literally no reason. But you've heard me ramble enough. I still enjoy the series for that alone: I can't stop peeking no matter if it's a trainwreck with thousand dead. It's easy to pick apart the pieces.
Thank you for reading this if you did. I really appreciate it.
Take care! <3

Note
Two things that I think help Granolah a lot are that he a) is the viewpoint character for a lot of it and b) doesn't try to drag anyone else into it. He's not trying to commit double-reverse genocide against the entire Earth for some reason; He just wants to commit regular reverse genocide against the two remaining Saiyans. Which still sucks but not to the same extreme.
Though he also positions the blame correctly on Frieza. Since he's not a Tuffle and his planet was killed for the Planet Trade, it's not exactly the same situation. He's basically only after Goku and Vegeta because the Heeters popped up like, "Hey why not get revenge on the those guys too I'm just Saiyan...."
But his arc does still fall into weird Saiyan apologetics by way of the franchise's ongoing weird softening and lionizing of Bardock. Granolah wants revenge against the Saiyans but then he doesn't because Bardock, during the genocide of his people, randomly decided to protect Granolah's family from the extermination he and his people were wreaking and I guess that means the Saiyans are cool actually?
It's so weird. Like. If the point is supposed to be that not all individuals of the oppressive culture are bad then I get it?
But it's conveyed by saying, "Um Actually, this one time Bardock took a break from the genocides he was committing to save one random family from the extermination being wrought by him and his forces. So maybe you should think about that."
Okay. I thought about it. And it's weird that he did that. Not so much virtuous or heroic or noble or whatever you're trying to say. Just. Really fucking weird.
But. Like. I don't think Bardock momentarily conveying a rare capacity for Not-Genocide is really the hill to die on here. The best argument that could be made for why Goku shouldn't have to pay for the sins of his fathers is actually Goku. Goku has been very successful in distancing himself culturally from the Saiyans' crimes and that's probably a more reasonable conversation to have than this weird whitewashing of Bardock.
Not Vegeta. Fuck Vegeta. You want revenge against the Saiyans? Vegeta's all yours. He was an active and eager participant in all of that. It's not the morally just option or whatever; He's a changed man and all that. But if a victim of Saiyan genocide is looking to punch back, Vegeta 100% deserves what's coming to him. He actually did that shit.
But the romanticized hero who rejected the cruelty and barbarism of the Saiyans and forged his own path? That's not Bardock. That's Goku. Goku is the reason why Goku shouldn't be tarred with the same brush as Vegeta, Nappa, Raditz, and Bardock.
Dragon Ball as a franchise... I feel like the series kind of likes to forget that the Saiyans sucked and that Goku rejecting his Saiyan heritage for Earth was a good thing. It's so far down the rabbit hole now of "SAIYANS ARE SO FUCKING COOL" that they just... lose sight of the fact that the Saiyans were monsters and that Goku is a rare exception because he had a different upbringing.
As far as "Old Non-Canon villains getting the broly treatment", the one I'm most interested in would be Baby. Make it a Vegeta Movie the same way that Super Hero was a Piccolo movie, and have it be about Vegeta developing into the mindset he's got in GT. I'd probably also do the same thing Broly did and have it end with Baby Alive and in a position to reappear in a non-antagonistic capacity
I'm... not sure there is a good way to handle Baby. I kinda have the same problem with Baby that I have with Hatchiyak. That is to say, I don't like the story, "Character X's people were the victims of a genocide and now X is so mad about it that he's going to commit double-reverse genocide on everyone else in retaliation."
That's... already problematic. But it's made worse when you add, "And the only people who can stop him are the sworn champions of the race that slaughtered his people to begin with. Let's kill this piece of shit and finally put an end to his whole wretched race!"
I don't think there's a good way to handle a Tuffle survivor as a villain. But if one must, the Saiyans cannot be the heroes of a story in which a Tuffle Survivor is the villain. Especially not the Prince of Genocide, proud and unapologetic inheritor of a legacy of extermination.
In my opinion, casting victims of the Saiyans as vile monsters that Goku and Vegeta must heroically eradicate at all costs was the worst decision Dragon Ball ever made and it's weird that it happened twice.
It... might be possible to write it better by reframing Baby from a sympathetic POV like you suggest but... I don't know. I feel like it's playing with fire to even touch these characters. It might be possible to tweak the concept enough that it becomes unobjectionable but it's easier to just write something else instead.
Like. Any story featuring the Tuffles as antagonists and Saiyans as protagonists without falling into the pitfall of "Genocide victims doing double-reverse genocide and needing to be exterminated" would need to be about the Saiyans reckoning with their legacy of genocide and doing something to make it right. If Dragon Ball wants to have this conversation then it needs to be ready to have this conversation.
And.
I don't know how they could possibly do that. The Saiyans exterminated countless races for profit. "My bad; We cool?" doesn't really cover it.
If you're not prepared to tackle heavy subject matter it's best to just not touch the heavy subject matter. In Dragon Ball as is, the Saiyans got theirs in the end. They faced the worst comeuppance imaginable for their years of capitalist slaughter when the boot ultimately came for them too. They got theirs. And the series is content to leave it at that.
But once their victims are staring Goku and Vegeta in the face, then we have to really talk about it. We have to actually have a conversation about how a colonizing people can make amends to the victims of their expansionism and ethnic cleansing. In this shonen manga about Saiyan warriors punching an enemy really hard until he explodes. And that doesn't sound like a good time for anyone.
The Tuffles and their indiscriminate revenge feels to me like a plot point better left in the margins of non-canon materials that have long been left behind. This series is not equipped to have a thoughtful and sensitive conversation about the legacy of colonialism and its effects on its victims, and I'm not sure its fans would want to sit through one even if it was.

THE ISSUE OF BARDOCK'S SCOUTER
Tumblr media
There's a big flaw in the DBS manga when it comes to Bardock's scouter. Bardock has the scouter on the entire time when fighting the Heeters. Meaning Freeza heard likely everything said.
Tumblr media
INSTANCES:
Freeza's men heard Bardock tell the survivors he aided, warned them about Freeza, as well as revealing he is a Saiyan named Bardock.
Tumblr media
Freeza's men heard that the Heeters are cheating Freeza, insult Freeza, & that the Heeters plot to overthrow Freeza.
Tumblr media
Freeza's men heard that the Heeters told a Saiyan that Freeza plans to kill the Saiyans & blame it on a meteor. Also, that the Heeters are plotting against him again.
Tumblr media
Then Elec goes to meet with Freeza right after, yet Freeza never confronts them about their treason?
Tumblr media
We know that the scouter can pick up conversations from a distance. Bardock's scouter picked up audio from a distance (it doesn't normally funtion like that when removed, but since it is damaged, the scouter seems to perform like it was still on the ear).
Tumblr media
We're also shown that the scouter's data was recorded.
Tumblr media
Toyo could fix this later by mentioning that Freeza knew of the conversations from the scouter's recorded audio. BUT, then that creates the problem of Freeza knowing the Heeters were plotting against him and Freeza did nothing to them. That's NOT like Freeza. He doesn't take betrayal lightly.
OTHER ERRORS & STUFF:
Elec mentioning a meteor will destroy the Saiyans changes what Toriyama wrote when he had Freeza come up with the idea while speaking with his own soldier (NOT the Heeters). There is no reason Freeza would discuss such a matter with ppl who he doesn't trust nor are part of his army. That's just Toyotaro trying to force a connection for nostalgic reasons.
Tumblr media
Toyo includes other things unnecessarily. Like Toyo showing how Leek got the scar on his head & how Bardock got the scar on his arm (but for some reason, Toyo drew Elec shooting a hole in Bardock's arm instead of the laser simply scraping his arm).
Toyo is trying to make connections for no reason other than to make his lackluster story be memorable. This could work if his storytelling wasn't piss poor.
Tumblr media
The DBS manga really does have its own continuity separate from the DBS anime and movies that are in the anime continuity.
UPDATE: Akio Iyoku (head of the Dragon Room) officially stated that there are 2 continuities for DBS.

Read the newest Dragon Ball Super chapter.
Once again, I'm so tired of the Bardock stuff.
It's so boring and his importance continues to feel really forced.
Super has a lot of product in it, but everything with new Bardock feels the most product-y I've ever felt both the manga and anime to be.
The Broly movie is covered in product, but at least the fighting looks pretty and I felt sincerity in Broly and the characters surrounding him.
The imagery was to please the fans, but there was new substance under it.
There is nothing interesting going for new Bardock.
The three main points concerning Bardock in this chapter are:
1) His wish for Goku and Raditz to thrive, which of course ties to his new theme of survival. It could be another potential slippery slope/mess on the plot level, but it's pretty clear this at least seems to be a milder/short term wish for that symbolism of how kindness stands over cruelty.
2) His statement about his motivation. He wants to get stronger. He doesn't care about redemption or revenge. It's about strength. Again, very early on in the series Baba described Goku to be like a wild animal.
Minus doesn't necessarily make Bardock entirely good. It makes him neutral. Like a wild animal and that could be interesting in itself. But here it's presented and executed in the least interesting way possible in my eyes.
3) Here's where Bardock learns about Planet Vegeta being destroyed. This is the clearest explanation for that big detail Minus didn't explain that clearly. It's probably the best part of Bardock so far, but it has nothing to do with his character.
I mean, at least he doesn't turn into a Super Saiyan (*not yet*, at least).
But none of this is presented in any kind of compelling way.
It's more wierd, potentially messy *possible* retconning.
Not as boring as the new foundation for Bardock's character, but as said not exactly compelling.
Can we move on from this section of the story?
This was a pretty great arc before this section.
The Heeters, Monaito, Oatmeel and Granolah are good, maybe even great characters.
Vegeta and Goku had good character points to work off of.
I just want the story to do whatever it wants to do and move on.
I mean, once more for however many times I've said it, I really hope the anime takes this and actually makes it good because despite the issues I take with it, I think it understands how to write characters.
The anime's biggest flaws in my eyes are character exaggeration and sloppy plotting.
The manga's biggest issues at its worst to me are the inability to define characters at all and not letting scenes breathe.
Also, again at least Super Hero looks to be fun, even if it seems to go back on Gohan's training again. With the anime I have more faith for the reasoning to be more nuanced than that, but if it's not I'm just as tired as you can possibly be about the story now just repeating character points.
Gohan neglects his training, but it's framed as a character struggle for him to find balance between being a scholar and fighter. Cool.
Vegeta is blunt and kind of a jerk towards Goku and still wants to surpass him, but there are enough scenes to show he doesn't hate him anymore and it's just banter. Cool.
Continue with this nuance, don't go back to the most basic version of it.
But as said above and many many times before now, I'm actually very much looking forward to the anime coming back the most and hopefully with the better writers of the anime.
Even if it seems like it's been too long now, I think them not being able to continue it for so long might be a blessing in disguise and I think it will still eventually come back.
Not only does Toei seem to have been getting their groove together since the first run, they'd at least have four arcs' worth of material to work with: Moro, Granolah, Broly and Super Hero, which would be pretty much already complete material when it would be set to come back. They wouldn't have to come up with stuff from scratch unlike for the first run.
They could even play around with order.
The anime also has distinct plotting from the manga. It would be fairly confusing to just start following the manga considering the differences between the stories in the anime and manga, so they would have to keep to stuff established in the anime, which I generally also much prefer over the manga.
All of this would help with basically everything: as I said, from characters to action setpieces to plot points, they don't have to come up with everything from scratch, they can use the basics of the manga. This would probably cut down the production time at least somewhat, even if they were to get stuck to another poor schedule they'd at least have this working for them.
(Though this didn't exactly help in the case of the BoG and RoF adaptions.)
Aside from this they could have the much more animator-friendly Broly movie designs working in their favour.
There are plenty of things that could still go wrong, but in my eyes, there is so much good going for the continuation of the anime and I still very much can't wait for it.

How to connect IQOS via Bluetooth with mobile app IQOS Connect 3.0?
You can connect IQOS with your Bluetooth mobile and set up additional services and notifications in the application, reset or locate the lost device within reach.
How to activate Bluetooth in IQOS 3 and connect it to an Android mobile phone
Both IQOS 3 and IQOS Multi have built-in Bluetooth, but there seems to be no activation button that integrates with the power switch.
- Install IQOS Connect
- Turn off IQOS 3 by holding down the button for 4 seconds.
- Then turn on IQOS 3 by holding down the button for 4 seconds.
- In IQOS Connect app, click Add device.
- Our phone will find IQOS 3 and prompt you to confirm the pairing.
- IQOS will appear in the list of devices with an incorrect version 2.4 Plus version, so we need to wait for the updated version of the application for correct viewing.

How to clean the wet IQOS
Do not heat the IQOS or the Heeter, you will just blow the liquid further than it was. Do not force the device violently on hot heating, in a hot car, in a microwave or oven, to spoil more than to solve.
Immediately distribute the device to a maximum of detachable parts, the IQOS is hollow, so it will be full of water, but the covers can be easily removed. Forget the rice, it will help you from moisture, but not after bathing. Moreover, only from the surface, of course, does not remove water from inside the device. Water or coffee is not as bad as it would seem, worse is sugar.
