Finally have an official cover and title!  There were some REALLY good guesses as to what the title could have been, but I can at least explain my reasons why I went with Replica.  TLDR you can still call it Future Booty Shaker if you want. Usual info dump below: 

 There are several reasons why I chose Replica as the final name.  The most obvious being that Omega is Donnie’s blatant attempt at replicating himself in digital form.

The second being that this comic is in itself is an attempt at replicating the vibe and setup of the film’s opening as closely as possible.  Those first 4:05 have literally become the bible for this story and I have already had to make vast changes based off of tiny details that weren’t noticed until later on.  

Ironically the cut full opening just dropped today and I do have some feelings I’d like to address.  It’s obvious how substantially different the two openings are from each other.  As cool as it was to see everyone kicking butt, I will admit I still like the final version a lot better.  Sure it’s shorter, but it felt far more personal and intimate than the action packed cut version, and THAT’S the sort of vibe I want to replicate in this comic.

At its core, this isn’t a story about fighting a bunch of Krang, it’s a story about a family fighting their own personal battles before an apocalyptic backdrop and Replica is a vain attempt at retaining that feeling while building a story around it. Will I be successful?  Who knows.  I will definitely be drawing reference from the cut boards especially the appearance of their colony.  I’m happy my hunch was right that they were stationed beneath the Statue of Liberty, that was already a part of my story haha.

My runner up title would have been “Fall of the TMNT” however I felt it was a little too on the nose.  Though it did make for a fun dichotomy with “Rise of the TMNT”s title.   Anyways that’s my info dump.  Feel free to still hashtag Future Bootyyy Shaker, I know I will.

Prologue:

An intriguing opening, and I mean that in a good way. The initial vocals are quite ethereal and make you curious, then the story begins and you’re hooked. My first listen went like Oh? Oh. Oh.

I highly recommend.

Let Go of Me:

Protagonist song. Jeremy Jordan.

Aside from that, I am of the opinion that it’s clever writing. There are some allusions to other songs in the lyrics and some figurative language that gives me beautiful mental images. If the first song wasn’t enough to convince you that it’s a good album, there are so many others that could win you over.

Behind Closed Doors:

This one I like a lot. It’s grown on me quite a bit. There are so many fun elements and parts that draw you in. The lyrics are hospitable and make you feel like you’re being welcomed and introduced to their little corner of the world.

It’s More. Under the cut. I think I’m funny. Anyway.

This is a peer pressure song and as someone who isn’t easily swayed by peer pressure, I would give in. It has such an interesting sound and the two characters here have such an intriguing dynamic.

She’s Not Me:

Very powerful song. So much emotion. Kind of reminds me of She Used To Be Mine from Waitress because it has a similar feeling of longing and it’s perfect. Crying.

Tomorrow Begins Today:

The emotion. The storytelling. The combination of reminiscing and looking to the future. It emulates ✨🌌 And the harmonies. Please.

This song in particular also has amazing animatic potential and I need it to be popular among the musical theatre community solely for that reason.

The Man I Know:

A look at the past. A little bit sad, a little bit angry, a little bit hopeful, a lot emotional. Ciara Renée gives it her all. If I could sing? I would belt this song all the time because it gives me feelings.

Dare to Dream:

It’s a romance duet but also includes an ambitious woman and gets stuck in my head often.

I’m not afraid to drop names. Antonio Cipriano and Solea Pfeiffer. If you are a fan of either of them and haven’t listened to this song or album, do yourself a favour and remedy that soon. Your ears and soul will thank me.

Rise or Fall/Act I Finale:

Vocals? ✓

Story? ✓

Catchiness? ✓

This is the type of Act I finale that has you shaking in your seat then leaves you in a near-catatonic state during intermission. Once again, I would sing this all the time if I had the ability. It has so much energy and carries a lot of emotion. So much fun to listen to.

He Is No Man:

Haunting and ominous, but not in a way that makes the listener feel uncomfortable. It’s comfortably unsettling, and a really interesting emotional journey.

Sign, Shake, Spit:

Lyrical bookends. I love it so much. You go on a journey and there’s a lot happening and it’s all tied together by the lyrics. The way this song is constructed is just amazing.

Catch the Moon:

The high notes. I am a puddle on the ground. The allusions to the other songs. Perfect for the character’s narrative. The emotion behind the words and the feelings being expressed is a lot to process, but it’s meant to be.

In The Light:

Title song. 11/10. I can imagine a large choir singing this and it makes my soul happy. It would also be phenomenal as just an orchestra instrumental. You have to listen to it to know what I mean. It’s among my favourites from this album.

The Man I Know (Reprise):

A great use of a reprisal. In the context of the story, it’s heartbreaking and bittersweet and very powerful. So much emotion and so little time to convey it.

Her Embrace:

How many times have I said emotion? Because it’s one more time. This is one of those songs that you could make fit any mood. It could be bittersweet. It could be a love ballad. It could be a song you listen to for lyrics or just for vibes.

In terms of what it means to the story, oh my goodness. No I will not elaborate. There is a plot summary on their website. Amazing. I need this on a stage now.

8. I do listen to music while I write but then I pause it to focus better and then I just sit there with headphones on with no music playing lmfao. The song that’s inspired me the most recently isn’t for a fic but for an animatic; I won’t say I’m in love from the Hercules movie lol.

9. I prefer to write canon-compliant (for the most part) stuff! I can never really go like. FULL AU . Maybe AU elements but it’s hard to construct an entire AU wholesale. But I also can’t go full canon compliance because I don’t have the confidence to emulate the kind of stuff that the source material offers haha

11. If I could only write angst fluff of smut for the rest of my life. I. I can’t lie to you HM. It would be smut I jUST HAVE SO MANY IDEAS AND NOT BEING ABLE TO WRITE THEM WOULD MAKE ME LOSE MY MIND,,,

Fairy Tale Watch: Enchanted (2007)

Viewing:  First

Director:  Kevin Lima

Jamie wanted to watch the new straight-to-Disney+ Disenchanted, and I said "I've never seen Enchanted (2007), though."   This led to some small debate.  Jamie had seen it, and thought that we'd seen it together (we had not) and so we had some comedic back and forth before she gave up and let me just put on Enchanted to see if it would ring any bells.  

I had not seen it.

Look, I don't care.  Amy Adams and Idina Menzel are in both movies, so I'd watch whatever.  But it's nice to start at the start.  I'm assuming Jamie saw the first one with her secret boyfriend.

I'm glad Enchanted was still a Disney movie and didn't feel like it needed to go "edgy".  I think I've kind of seen the joke of running sweet characters through a PG-13 meat grinder enough, and, instead, welcome bringing some of that Princess magic to the real world.  Sure, there's a version of this that's double-entredres and boner jokes that one could make and I might chuckle at, but - and maybe I'm a horrible person - but I never feel like they go dark enough if that's what they want to do.  And the results are usually kind of dumb.  As a result, I found charm in the high road version of this film (even if it absolutely winked at the audience on a key idea about the importance of a kiss).  

This would have been early-stardom Amy Adams, and it's a reminder - as every Adams movie is - what a g.d. delight she is on screen.  This isn't the dramatic Adams we know from Arrival or other challenging roles (American Hustle), but nothing about what she's doing here is easy.  She's not playing hopelessly naive or childish - she's genuinely bringing the radically upbeat mindset of the Disney Princess to life - and Princesses aren't guileless in their own world - just ours.  

I'll register a complaint that Idina Menzel is under-utilized in the film, but I do appreciate that she's never the villain, and probably far more charming than our romantic lead (Patrick Dempsey) has given her credit for - which does set up a weird tension at the film's end.  Like... why *not* Idina Menzel?  Sure, sparks are sparks, but the movie felt like both of the Patrick Dempsey objects of affection wanted the same things and would have expressed themselves similarly, but one is a real person who lives in society?

Patrick Dempsey is... fine?  He has the somewhat thankless task of being the normal guy in this scenario who mostly reacts to the insanity around him.   He's good!  But, you know, he's competing with people acting to the back row, cartoons, chipmunks, musical numbers, etc...

James Marsden is rarely a leading man, which always struck me as weird as he has charm, good looks and can act.  But he's always a plus to a movie when he shows up.   We could have had that ego-centric heel turn in this movie, or played it as annoying or villainous.  But instead - he's basically an okay guy with a lot of enthusiasm.  And he's kind of perfect as the embodiment of the 2-dimensional prince of a early Disney.

Timothy Spall manages to make the most out of what could have been a thankless part in a 90's film.  He actually has a character arc, and he's properly goofy and fun as the guy who is doing his queen's bidding.

And, of course, Susan Sarandon is only on screen for maybe seven minutes in the movie, but you won't forget she was there.  She's properly chewing up scenery and bringing that evil witch-queen vibe to life.  It doesn't hurt that in a movie with outstanding costuming, this outfit takes it to 11.  Good golly.  

oh my word

As both animated figure and on-screen, it's not quite enough time with a great character, but better that than overstaying your welcome.

Look, I like the basic *idea* of the movie, and I didn't detect many false notes as the movie chugged along.  I even like the goofy chipmunk (at least more than Jamie) and how the various characters fit, including Spall v Chipmunk.  But I also loved the then-contemporary 2D Disney animation and that whole sequence which both loved and winked at Snow White, Cinderella and Sleeping Beauty.

I don't really get what the story is with director Kevin Lima.  He has some wins under his belt, but he doesn't have many actual pictures attributed.  A quick scan suggests that he's routinely attached to films that wind up in development hell - usually high concept things that mix animation and live action, but almost nothing escapes pre-production.  Which is unfortunate - he's good here!  This movie could have been cloying, it could have been the glossy dumbness of 90's family comedies.  But it actually works extremely well by not tipping toward the lazy decisions and encouraging getting the most out of everyone.

Is it great?  I mean - it's good.  It's a fun movie with no pretentions of being anything other than what it is.  And at this late date, it's a delight to see Adams taking off like a shot and Sarandon just go nuts.  And - really - the big musical number in Central Park is just awesome.  

The box office on this movie was a very solid $340 million, has had a lively home video life, and while not the run-away success of Frozen is still much liked or loved.  So it is *weird* to me that the sequel wasn't offered at the theater by Disney.  I'm not getting their model, but they also just fired Bob Chapek.

This is part two of my extended argument about why Catra And Adora are the best love story in the history of kid’s animation and one of the best love stories in the history of television. You can read Part 1 in the link below, but in short, in that post I explored how Catra and Adora’s character arcs are interwoven - how they diverge and then converge, and how they comment on one another thematically. In this post, I’m going to do a deep dive into how Catra and Adora’s relationship embodies ambiguity, contradiction, and even conflict, and how that makes it stronger and more compelling, as well as more reflective of the actual experiences of queer people and everyone else (of all ages). I would go so far as to say that the show’s unflinching honesty in its portrayal of love’s occasional ugliness and refusal to simplify relationships or people into ‘good’ or ‘bad’ is integral to its success and essential to its moral vision. The ‘Catradora is toxic’ stuff is obnoxious not simply because it is wrong, but because it argues that one of the shows greatest strengths is actually a weakness, and in so doing misses the point.

So let's get complicated.

The sheer complexity and ambiguity of Catra and Adora’s relationship is what sold me on the show. Even in season 1 when I thought it was a goofy but fun pastiche of 80’s cartoons with a so-so supporting cast and an occasional tendency toward cliched and saccharine plot resolutions (little did I know that it subverted all of that later, again, this was season 1), I loved every minute Catra and Adora were on screen together. From the very first ‘Hey Adora’ there’s just so much there. Friendship, rivalry, sexual tension and the hints of something darker. Rather than once again recite the plot of She-Ra I’m going to look into different elements of that ambiguity in turn. Just so you know, as I write this, I’m listening to my Catradora Playlist (which I’ve posted about before and you can listen to here:). If a playlist that has everything from Dolly Parton to Dua Lipa to the Drive by Truckers to Dire Straits to Darkthrone (and that is just the ‘D’s) sounds good to you, check it out. It’s 3/4s angry breakup songs and angrier revenge anthems finished off by ¼ sweet love songs; it’s great.

So first off, let’s talk about the friendship/romance ambiguity that is there from that first ‘Hey Adora’. From the first episode, with all their touching, their banter and the way they look at each other, there’s clearly a romantic and sexual subtext between these two (I’m going to talk about queer desire as a huge part of their relationship in a later post). Even when they are enemies, that sexual tension doesn’t go away - indeed it is often heightened, especially in Season 1 (before Catra convinces herself that she just wants Adora gone). I mean, Princess Prom...just...Princess Prom. The eye contact, the...everything else contact, the leg placement, everything. I know that before scoring the show they made animatics with various songs and I like to think Princess Prom was “Bad Romance.” More on the flirt-fighting later. When Catra and Adora are reunited, all the subtext is turned up to 11 until it’s just text. The constant wrestling, the leering and winking, to quote The Kids These Days, there is no heterosexual explanation for any of this. But there’s still -for the characters- a lot of ambiguity, and I think that’s key.

The thing about the friend/lover ambiguity is that it isn’t just a sop to the censors, though we know that Noelle would have included even more flirting if she had been able to and that some of the repetitions of ‘friend’ seem to have been an attempt to appease the higher ups (he throws that in with Glimmer/Bow too, which does even more to diffuse their early romantic tension in the middle seasons). However, the ambiguity between friends and lovers is real for Catra and Adora as well. Catra starts the series unwilling to share her true feelings, and most of the series actively suppressing her desire for Adora (she only admits it to herself after DT’s emotional evisceration). Meanwhile Adora spends the entire show dodging the question of what she wants. So even though she is not only a lesbian but a pretty thirsty one (judging by her reaction to every woman with defined biceps that she sees), Adora doesn’t understand that what she’s experiencing is desire. And isn’t this part of our experience of love? I can’t be the only person who’s been unsure of whether or not I’m in love with my best friend, and unsure if they return my feelings. In particular I wonder if it’s part of the queer experience, when intense frienships in our youth are often the first indication that there’s an underlying attraction there. Lacking a script from birth of ‘what I am feeling is sexual’, it often takes time for us to name it as such, so we think ‘man I guess I have really intense friendships with <people of the gender I haven’t yet admitted I’m attracted to>.’

Another important point about the friendship/romance ambiguity is that it is important for younger viewers. It’s important that Catra and Adora are friends and that part of their relationship can be seen as an intense friendship because the target demographic of this show isn’t actually dating anyone. While understanding that romantic relationships are a thing that adults do is helpful and all, it’s not immediate to kids in the way that friendships are. And kids, even early elementary age kids, can have some pretty complicated and fraught friendships. And seeing the breach between Catra and Adora’s friendship and their eventual reconciliation is something that I think can really speak to kids.

Next up, let’s talk about the love/hate ambiguity and the amount of conflict in this relationship. The haters aren’t -wrong- that this is a high conflict relationship, but as I said before, that’s one of its strengths as a love story. So funny story about this. I mentioned my Catradora playlist before (as I write this it is playing ‘Oceanographer's Choice’ by the Mountain Goats). Anyway, my spouse found it on my Spotify and listened to it and I swear he/she asked me if ‘we were okay’ because it very much sounds like the playlist someone would make for themselves when they were about to break up with their partner. I reassured him that no, we’re good, this is just a silly fan thing, we’re cool, and everything was alright, he believed me and that was that. But...Catradora is like that. It’s the kind of relationship whose vibes are captured by The Mountain Goats, and Leonard Cohen, and Loretta Lynn songs about punching romantic rivals, and Townes Van Zandt and all that. For 4 seasons. It’s raw, and often ugly and sometimes downright brutal. And it’s messy AF. That being said, the same can be said for most of the relationships in this show - every relationship that is shown in any detail is complicated and ambivalent on one or more levels - Glimmer’s with Angella, Adora’s with Glimmer, Catra’s with Scorpia (oooooohhhh boooooy…), even Glimmer’s with Bow. Fuck, the only major relationships in the show that are straightforwardly supportive and affirming is Entrapta and Hordak (I am not joking) and the married-couple rivalry of Spinnerella and Netossa (and I guess Bow and Adora’s almost sibling-like friendship). This show -revels- in emotional complexity and complicated relationships. But let’s focus on Catradora.

I already mentioned Princess Prom’s flirt-fights, and honestly those keep up from the first trip to Salineas to the portal (and then they mostly stop, because Adora is just done with Catra’s shit). But it’s more than that. Catra and Adora’s relationship has so much love in it that neither of them can snuff it out within themselves. They can’t stop wanting to be with each other and can’t stop hoping in some deeply repressed sliver of their minds that someday they can be reunited. But they also have a very messed up dynamic when the series starts, and a fundamental conflict in what they value most and how they want to live their lives. And then there’s just the fact that Catra treats Adora and most other people around her pretty terribly, because she’s been raised by an abusive narcissist that raised her to believe that love was a weakness and that manipulation and violence were the only way to protect yourself, and because she’s spiteful and angry. Adora never -hated- Catra, but she spends much of the show sad about her and furious at her at the same time, and missing her and ignoring that feeling, while Catra definitely hated Adora even as she suppressed her love for her. 

And now I’m sure any antis bothering to read this are nodding along and pointing and saying ‘see, this is a toxic relationship!’ or even ‘this is an abusive relationship.’ Now rather than debating labels, I’ll just note that Adora is never isolated or deprived of agency by Catra in the ways Shadow Weaver isolates and controls Catra and Adora. I think the show is very careful about these differences. But aside from that, the thing to emphasize is that as messed up as Catra and Adora’s relationship is at the start and in the middle of the show, it doesn’t end that way. And not because of the redeeming power of love or Catra and Adora sacrificing their identities and desires for their realtionship, but because Catra and Adora both grew as people and grew into people that were capable of loving each other in the way that each of them deserved, and then they -actually treated each other better-. See my discussion of Taking Control and the rest of S5 in the previous post.

With all that said, though, I think there’s a tremendous amount of insight into just how resentful and obsessive Catra and Adora’s relationship is at its worst. Because the dark truth about love is that it isn’t necessarily a good thing. It’s a cliche to talk about the thin line between love and hate, but people talk about it for a reason. Without respect for your beloved’s autonomy love can become controlling; without generosity it can become resentful. Without respect for yourself it can become self-destructive. Without an awareness for the world and others around you it can become an ‘egotism of two’ and without a sense of boundaries it can erase the identities of both partners and deprive them of the very selfhood that each person fell in love with to begin with. And I could go on. She-Ra illustrates just about all of these ways love can go wrong in the earlier and less healthy phases of Catra and Adora’s relationship, both before and after their breach at Thaymore. The intensity of Catra’s love for Adora, it’s all consuming nature, is what fuels her sense of injury, her resentment and her hate. She-Ra, at a very deep level, understands that love is not necessarily a good thing, that just loving someone isn’t enough, and that it isn’t how we feel about people that matters, but how we treat them. The darkest illustration of this insight actually isn’t even in Catra and Adora, but in Shadow Weaver, but that’s a huge subject on its own and this is about Catradora. But it’s important to remember that even when they were most estranged there was still enough love between Catra and Adora to inspire Catra to reach out across the stars to save Adora, and enough love to inspire Adora to respond and save Catra.

On a less philosophical level, the fucked up ambiguity of Catra and Adora’s relationship in the first four seasons is just incredibly true to life. Because our loves are messy. This is something that’s become clearer to me as I’ve gotten older. When I was younger I was pretty doctrinaire about trying to have relationships that were ‘psychologically healthy’, by avoiding all that negative stuff and disregarding feelings that weren’t productive. And that...isn’t actually a great recipe for actual psychological health, spoiler alert. It just leads to ignoring all the bad shit that you have decided is unacceptable. Some amount of pain is unavoidable. Sometimes you’ll be angry. Sometimes you’ll be sad. Sometimes you’ve be jealous or even resentful of your beloved. When you’ve lived and loved you’ve been hurt by people you love. You’ve hurt them. You’ve looked at a relationship that one or both of you has absolutely trashed and you’ve had to decide if it’s worth fixing. You may have had to decide whether to forgive a partner after a major betrayal. And if you decide to forgive them, you’ve learned that forgiveness is a long and painful road. But perhaps you’ve forgiven and learned that it was hard, but it was one of the best decisions you ever made. Or maybe you walked away and realized that that was what you needed to do. And I think I’m not the only one who sees all these complicated experiences reflected in Catradora’s arc. One thing I’ve noticed about its fandom is that it includes a bunch of older fans who really identify with the characters and relationships at their most complicated and conflicted, and I think part of that is just life experience of having lived through multiple bad break ups, or maybe had one or two tearful reunions. I’m not the only married guy (let’s go with guy for now) in his mid 30’s who fucking loves this show and sees my experiences reflected in these characters. And while I can’t speak for them I’m sure there’s a lot of teen or young adult viewers who also connect deeply with how complicated things always are in this show, because that’s true of their experience, too - I think it may be more about life experience than age. Certainly for me it hasn’t been the years so much as the mileage that have made me relate to complicated relationships.

Online there’s a school of thought that says ‘cut toxic people out of your life, cut toxic relationships out of your life, etc’ that is both true to an extent and also not particularly helpful. It doesn’t tell us what to do about people who have hurt us but also support and inspire us or relationships that have caused us incredible amounts of pain but which still also give us incredible joy and strength and give us the room to be ourselves. Relationships that twist us into someone that we’re not or constrict who we can be are bad, and we are better off without them, but not every relationship that has caused us pain is like that. And of course, people and relationships can change (and in fact, they definitely will change), the trick is, you can’t make people change. You can only give them the chance to change themselves. And isn’t that the chance that Adora gives Catra after they are reunited? And doesn’t Catra rise to the challenge?

And that’s where I don’t think I can emphasize enough just how much this show is motivated by generosity and humanism. It loves its characters and in that I think it shows a real generosity of spirit. At some level, I think Noelle Stevenson really believes that people can change and be better, that no one is completely beyond redemption, and that a loving relationship with some truly unhealthy dynamic can become much more supportive and nourishing if both people can grow into themselves and each other. But I’m going to talk more about how this show makes a ‘Power of Love’ ending work later.

The last thing I wanted to touch on with the sheer messiness of Catra and Adora’s relationship is how it works as representation. In the past I’ve alluded to feeling that ‘representation’ is a very limited framework for judging the portrayal of queerness in art. Art doesn’t just reflect the queer experience by ‘representing’ queer people and our relationships but by reflecting queerness in its themes or by indirectly reflecting elements of the queer experience - this indirect reflection is critical for She-Ra portraying a true-to-life queer story that includes queer struggles -without- including homophobia, transphobia, cishteronormativity, or patriarchy. But that’s a topic for another post. 

So ‘representation’ is not the only framework for discussing queerness in media, sure. But even if we restrict ourselves to representation, the discourse (™) about representation is sometimes too narrow, and sometimes seems to judge the quality of representation by how ‘positively’ queer people or relationships are portrayed. Basically, some folks sometimes seem to assume that ‘good rep’ is about portraying morally upright and psychologically well-adjusted characters who are in healthy relationships, and anything messier than that is ‘bad rep.’ And that’s...not great, necessarily. First, because it’s simply not true to our actual experiences that all queer relationships are wholesome and low-conflict and drama free. Because they’re relationships that humans have with each other, and humans are often pretty fucked up. Only showing the best case scenario doesn’t reflect our real lives, and doesn’t give us realistic models for dealing with situations when things are less than ideal. It’s also not a great framework for judging art - it’s a limited view of art that assumes not only that it should teach us, but it should do so in a clear way that doesn’t leave any messy questions. And I don’t believe art should be like that, queer art least of all. We’ve all come to where we are by asking uncomfortable questions of ourselves. Being challenged is good, actually. And messy relationships and flawed characters can challenge us. I also worry that demanding that portrayals of queer relationships in too-rosy terms may inadvertently create a kind of respectability politics where queer love in fiction or even the real world is only worth depicting (and implicitly accepting) if its uniformly good and not too messy. Queer people have as much a right to be fucking disasters as anyone else.

It’s also just better for art when it can portray a broader variety of things. Or to quote Noelle, speaking a bit over a month after she had pitched She-Ra (I literally quoted this in my previous post, but it’s so central to what Noelle is doing here): “Honestly, I want to find a way where we can still have these conversations about gender and diversity, because they’re SO important, but also kind of…give the stories in question a little room to breathe, and expand. It’s great we have role models, and I know it’s making a difference. But I think that’s just the beginning. I want female characters and characters of color to be able to exist in a mundane way too, or in an outright unpleasant or villainous way, and not have them have to carry the weight of portraying every single marginalized person positively, and not have their negative traits be seen as a poor reflection on the group they represent.” What Noelle says about individual characters applies to relationships as well. Queer art should have room for portraying the good, the bad, the ugly and the ~complicated~ in our experience, not just the good.

But the final point is that Catradora’s conflicts work so well because they drive the drama. On the simplest level, Catra and Adora are exciting to watch in a way very few fictional couples are, and yeah, part of that is the ‘are they going to fight or make out?’ tension, but also the many layers of feelings and thoughts and conflicts bubbling beneath the surface every time they’re on screen together or even talk about each other. Double Trouble lives for this shit, and so do we. On a larger scale, by making the conflict between Catra and Adora a -real conflict- (not just a rom com misunderstanding) based on their basic values and identities as people and making it central to the show and making the show turn on its resolution, Noelle is also making their -relationship- the center of the show. Because the show’s central conflict between Catra and Adora is also the driving tension in their love story, the love story -is- the show in a way that it rarely is in TV. And that’s incredible, especially because it’s a queer love story.

So to wrap up, the ambiguities and outright conflict of Catra and Adora’s relationship aren’t ‘bad representation’ - instead they are a nuanced and very grown-up portrayal of the complexities that real relationships (queer and otherwise) have. Their conflict is integrated into the story and is actually essential to making the show as a whole a queer love story. It’s fucking brilliant and Noelle Stevenson is an actual genius.

what if i wrote fanfiction at 10 pm on a saturday night  😏 (this lasted for an hour so now its 11)

Context: I like making theories for Fire Spirit. This one is essentially about him previously being a knight much like Knight Cookie, named Magma Cookie.

A knight of vanilla armor and a knight of chocolate armor walked side-by-side into the entrance of Dragon’s Valley. The Vanilla knight, famously known as Knight Cookie, was a relatively short cookie with a strong build and poorly cut blond hair. The chocolate knight, on the other hand, was not known well by those outside of the kingdom neighboring the Dragon’s Valley. His name was Magma Cookie. He was tall, slim, and had flowing magma hair. 

At this time of day, there were usually two to four dragons awake and flying around. The two armored cookies could see a yellow dragon flying away from the valley and a green dragon flying above their heads. While it was impressive, they were on a mission to find the dragon that had been terrorizing Magma Cookie’s kingdom: Pitaya Dragon Cookie. Other dragons had relatively positive relationships with the kingdoms around them. Pitaya Dragon Cookie was the exception to this expectation. Every other week, they would try to burn down a kingdom, whether it be Magma Cookie’s kingdom or Knight Cookie’s. The two bravely decided to venture out and teach this dragon a lesson! 

“Are you slow?” Teased Knight Cookie as he walked ahead.

“Are you? I’ll race you to Pitaya’s cave! I know where it is.” To be frank, Magma Cookie knew his way around Dragon’s Valley like the back of his cracked hand.

“That’s not fair!” 

Most dragons rested peacefully as the clang of armor hitting the ground went past the mouth of their dens. Some, although disgruntled, ignored the disruption. Few called out for the two knights to stop making a ruckus. 

“Here it is,” Magma Cookie whispered to Knight Cookie. “Pitaya’s den.” They tip-toed their way in, trying not to awaken the dragon. 

“Don’t announce our entrance this time,” Knight Cookie warned. “We have to get the surprise attack--”

“PITAYA DRAGON COOKIE!” Magma Cookie was twenty steps behind Knight Cookie in his plan, having already announced their existence. “I, MAGMA COOKIE, CHALLENGE YOU TO A DUEL.”

“Is that sssso...?” Queried the sleepy dragon as they rose their head. “Would you like your partner to help or are you a... brave cookie?” They looked up and down at Magma Cookie, sizing him up. “You’d be a quick meal.”

“I...” Magma Cookie looked at Knight Cookie, who had his face in his hands. 

“We’ll fight you together. You need to stop terrorizing the kingdoms!”

“That’d be so boring. You’re so tiressssome... Because I do not like you, vanilla knight, I will be fighting the chocolate knight and him only. Should I win, you will leave me alone.”

“Do you think our lives are something to bet on? Like we’re--”

“Deal. I’ll leave you alone if you beat me. I’m not so sure about Knight Cookie, though.”

“Stop making impulsive decisions like this, Magma Cookie.” He crossed his arms. “You’re going to get yourself killed one of these days.”

“Hopefully not today!”

“Sssay goodbye to your friend, ‘Knight’ Cookie.” With a swish of the tail, Knight Cookie was pushed outside of the den. He could feel the ground shake and see rubble fall to block him out. There was no way inside. Knight Cookie wasn’t strong enough to pick up or push the fallen boulders.

Why did Magma Cookie feel so cold? He was fighting a fire-breathing dragon! It was supposed to feel hot! Magma Cookie grunted as he swung his sword at the dragon’s legs. He panted as he dodged most of the dragon’s attacks-- they were powerful, even one hit would end in his demise. 

His sword clashed against the dragon’s scales, although it seemed nothing happened. Pitaya Dragon Cookie raised their head and roared, breathing a great gust of blazing fire at the roof of the den. “Pathetic mortal... Your sssword is heated...” They slashed at Magma Cookie, quickly knocking him over into the wall. He was shivering as he stared up at the large dragon. 

“Don’t kill me! I’ll-- I’ll leave you alone!”

“Tch. You think that me sssparing you will teach you anything? You really are quite stupid.” Pitaya Dragon Cookie’s stomach made a rumbling noise as flames erupted from their mouth, burning Magma Cookie to a crisp. They coughed on his ashes, hacking up a bead. “Yuck. It’s been 500 years already?” Looking at their large collection of beads, they shrugged. “I’ll leave it on those ashes... They’re like a nessst.”

Pitaya Dragon Cookie burst through the rubble at the mouth of their cave to find that Knight Cookie was talking to another dragon of the valley. He immediately turned over to the dragon and began speedwalking. 

“What did you do? What have you done? Is he alright?”

“I’m afraid not,” they answered with a malicious smile. “Would you like to sssee the damage?” Pitaya Dragon Cookie was already walking toward their den, knowing Knight Cookie would follow.

“Here he is!” They showed the miserable display of hubris that was Magma Cookie’s ashes. 

“Oh my tree.” Knight Cookie broke down on his knees, picking up Magma Cookie’s ashes as his tears fell down. “Why would you do this? He just wanted you to leave the kingdoms alone!”

“Like you two would ssstop hounding me about it if I let him live. You wouldn’t know sense if it stood in front of you and introduced itself.” 

“I have a deal for you.”

“Oh?” Pitaya Dragon Cookie slithered around Knight Cookie. “The vanilla knight has come with a deal? How interesssting.”

“If I can beat you in this battle, you will do whatever you can to bring Magma Cookie back. If you beat me, well... You know you’ll be left alone for good. No other knight is as brave as us-- me.” 

“Ohohoho! Do you care for this cookie?”

“I’d give my life for him!”

“I already knew that, you buffoon. I wasss asking if you had relations with the chocolate knight.” 

“Obviously so. If you weren’t a murderous beast, I would’ve been glad to show you our rings.” 

“How adorable! You wish to sssave a husband. A lover.” The dragon dramatically posed around their den in a mocking manner. “Let us fight.”

Knight Cookie swung his sword in a cold and calculated manner, aiming for the dragon’s neck. Pitaya Dragon Cookie was careless, allowing the Knight to bang his sword against their neck. He attempted to hit other body parts, each having similar results. The vanilla knight growled, trying to think about what he’s doing wrong. Was the dragon’s scales simply too powerful? 

That was when it hit him-- literally. Pitaya Dragon Cookie swung their tail, hitting Knight Cookie square in the chest and launching him into a wall. Knight Cookie swiftly got up and ran around, trying to get the large dragon to swing their tail again. He called out to the dragon, heckled the dragon, and teased the dragon. Finding himself the perfect opportunity, Knight Cookie raised his sword.

He swiftly sliced downward. 

The dragon’s tail flew off followed by trails of pink blood. Pitaya Dragon Cookie, after thrashing around the cave for a few minutes, fell over on their side and passed out. 

“I did it.” He huffed. “I did it! I beat the dragon!” Knight Cookie stood up, feeling more powerful than ever. He picked up the dragon’s tail with ease despite the tail’s large size, examining it. “Maybe I can hang you up on my wall. Isn’t that right, Magma--” Realization struck his face as he turned toward the bead. He stared into the ashes of his fallen lover once again and tried to shake the dragon awake.

“Pitaya Dragon Cookie! Wake up! You’ve a deal to fulfill!” 

It was surprisingly hard to wake a dragon. It was even more hard to take care of the dragon-- the only solution Knight Cookie had to his issue was to try to heal Pitaya Dragon Cookie enough for them to at least speak to him. This was a task that took him weeks of outgoing trips toward unfamiliar cookie hospitals and other dragon’s dens. 

But he was finally successful.

“Who the hell are you...?” The dragon drowsily asked. 

“You-- you.” Knight Cookie, although surprised by this successful attempt, managed to bring himself to a grim and serious tone. “We have a deal. You need to follow through on your loss.” 

“I haven’t lossst to a cookie...” Upon seeing their dismembered tail, their mouth dropped. “Until now.”

“You’ve been asleep for weeks. How can I revive Magma Cookie?”

“I have an idea, although I will warn you... Your husssband will never be the same after thisss...”

“I just want him back.” 

“Take one of my scales to the bead on his ashes.” 

After doing this, it was obvious to see the effects. Flames were sparking from the dragon scale and the bead that quickly erupted into a blazing ball of birth. The light was blinding as a meek, flame-haired cookie was born.

Fire Spirit rose from the ashes, his cape elegantly flowing through the breeze of The Dragon’s Valley.

Ephemera Week (2002)

Mission Hill (originally aired on WB, 1999-2000)

Mission Hill was a perfectly good animated series from former Simpsons show-runners Bill Oakley and Josh Weinstein. It was a sitcom about cool young people in a cool young people city. Andy French is an aspiring cartoonist, intended to be a Matt Groening type who would (over the course of many many seasons) eventually find success and get his own super-successful animated series called THE SIMPSONS: SEASONS 1-8.

The premise of the show was that Andy’s parents retire and sell the childhood home, displacing his nerdy high-school aged younger brother Kevin. Kevin moves in with Andy and learns how to be a cool city style guy, you know, the kind that’s always “walkin here!” and sucking off Bob Balaban in the men’s room and whatnot.

The show is at least better than the bad seasons of the Simpsons, and has a cool alt-comics style that suits the show really well. Not to damn it with faint praise, it’s a good show. There are a handful of GREAT episodes and plenty of strong jokes. There's news of a revival in the works focusing on Gus and Wally, the older gay couple in the show. It's supposed to take place in the same era the show originally aired in, which is just great.

Like Baby Blues and Home Movies before it, I did catch this show randomly on it's network of origin. I saw one or two of the final episodes to air on WB. I liked it! I was glad to see it get revived for a run on Adult Swim. I've wanted more episodes ever since.

I don't think the show is available for streaming anywhere, which is too bad. It came out on DVD with special features. That DVD set was reissued on DVD-R without special features, so... buyer? be wary. There's also a number of music replacements that ruin some of the scenes. At one point I had a bootleg set where somebody took the DVD video and replaced the audio with the as-broadcast version of of the show. Good luck finding it.

Here's an episode guide showing their debuts on Adult Swim. Bold episodes were originally unaired, making their debut on the channel. Also note: episodes had an innocuous title and a spicier in-house title in parentheses. It’s real Police Squad! shit.

Another confusing Baffler Meal thing: the deleted cold open that's on the DVD. It gets called back to in the actual episode ("Between two steamed buns", "Nine dollars!? For what?") and provides crucial context, BUT it also gets contradicted in the actual episode (SG sells out for "one serious speaker" instead of owing a restaurant money). Also I remember all the ads for this episode used a clip from the cold open! It always kinda bothered me that they cut it but boys (matt & dave) will be boys!

I do think the cold open is nice and I always make a point to watch it with the episode. In my mind they are as essential as watching that boring Terry Gilliam short before Meaning of Life. The next step is pointlessly editing them together using Nero. Yeah, that’s the ticket

This is a bkdk playlist, but it isn’t really romantic like the one before. This one deals with the inevitable conversation(s) that need to happen between these two about their past. I don’t know if this is what you expected or hoped for, but I hope you enjoy it regardless.

This is broken into two parts, with song 7, Vas by jigger finn, as an interlude of sorts. Because this playlist is set for a conversation story, the songs do not flow into each other in a musical way. Each song deals with or touches with topics I think they’d talk about, e.g. being classmates, their mistakes, how they feel about each other (admiration, loathing), how they feel about themselves (insecurity, uncertainty, a need to be perfect), and whether they’re willing to try again.

The songs are arranged in an order, so on first time playing please put it in order if you can! As stated before, song 7, Vas by jigger finn, is the interlude between the two main parts. It’s broken in parts because realistically, I don’t think Bakugou and Midoriya would only have one conversation about everything that happened. It would take a lot of them, so many different conversations, to let themselves and each other move forward on the same page.

This playlist took me so long to be confident in. I love the second part of the playlist, and I’m learning to love the first. I think the concept of ‘The bakudeku conversation playlist,’ was easier as just a concept, and when I tried to put it into something real, it quickly fell apart. It was hard to find songs that I believed fit, while making it within what they would talk about, and keep it at around an hour. This was hands down the hardest playlist so far. But I’m quite happy with how it is, and I’ve been inspired to create a bkdk animatic for one of these songs.

As usual, the final song is your conclusion, and you can interpret it however you wish. But... I think I projected my set narrative too much on the last song, so my personal conclusion would be easier to tell.

My next bakudeku playlist will be completely and wholeheartedly filled with love. Not like the first one where it was sad in some parts (which you can find in my spotify tags if you haven’t seen it already :D), this one will be a lot of ‘wow, I love you with my entire being, how lucky we are to love.’

Group 7 Independent Project!

Pre Production -

This is the second time I’m working with Group 7. It is truly an honour to be surrounded by such talented people. We have learnt from last time and we thought it would be interesting to switch up the roles. Here was what we ended up with:

As Production designer I had to create a mood board. We had discussed in meetings what aesthetic we wanted to go for and I believe we ended up with a mixture between films like “Moonrise Kingdom” and “Fight Club”. Either way, these were two of the films I took inspiration from when working on the mood board of the film.

Additionally, I had to think of the costume for both actors. For the man I chose to instead of having major differences in the two separate costumes to instead change them subtly to give a feeling he is still grounded in reality. So that means I added the glasses, changed the tie and gave him a watch to switch up how he looked. The Imagination costume is inspired from Ewan MacGregor’s character in “Big Fish'' we wanted to give him a full blue costume originally but I realised fairly soon that that wasn’t going to happen. So I adapted and decided to use his ties as a means of stating which reality he was in. When he is in the “dream world” he has a very colourful yellow tie but when he returns to his office I believe we went with a black/red tie.

For the woman, I chose to give her a very colourful look. This was purely so she could match the imagination around her. I discussed with Bonnie about possibly putting flowers in her hair but for some reason we couldn’t find anything. In regards to the rest of her costume I gave her shades so that there would be a physical separation between the two. If he can’t make eye contact with her how is he supposed to connect.

Overall, I’m very happy with the costumes and for a first attempt I’m actually quite proud.

Finally, set design. I had recently worked on a project called “Pied” where I had to create a whole set for my actors. That was pretty much my crash course for this independent project. Using the knowledge I can gain from creating that set I tried implementing it into the office workspace and the picnic arrangement. I’m happy with it but it will honestly be down to you to decide if I did a good job. If I could mention any little “fun facts” about what I did here would be a few:

I used a ping-pong table as the walls splitting the workspace

I tried spreading the food along the picnic like a wall that separated the two of them.

There is a jar of pickles in one of the shots. I don’t know who would bring a jar of pickles to a picnic but I thought it would be funny

On the back wall of the office there is a bunch of hidden Easter eggs *HOWEVER* David’s massive head covers them up!

In regards to how the other team members did. We developed the script ideas until we landed on this one. Jack had a great idea about filming some really nice shots of food. We were actually quite a big fan of this idea. I just thought Heather’s idea would allow us to experiment more.

Tom then wrote a (very) detailed script in collaboration with Heather, Bonnie drew a genuinely fantastic storyboard (she is too hard on herself haha) and Jack prepared for the shoot. One issue that presented itself fairly soon was the fact we had two actors on set. However, our Producer (Heather) handled it like a pro and we managed to get the all clear. Overall, a very hardworking start with the promise of Bonnie doing a short animation for the storyboard. (I’m looking forward to hopefully seeing it)

Production -

The shoot day was very fun. We all arrived at 11:30am and we made our way over to the location. Originally, we had planned to film on top of a hill however, things quickly changed and Jack said there was a fantastic path to film on. I was fairly set on the hill idea (As I had imagined the scene being somewhat similar to the UP opening montage) but he said it was a better location and I trust him.

So this is where it got a bit funky. It turns out the location had been converted into a dirt road since the last time Jack had been there. This was a bit demoralising as we had carried a lot of props out but luckily we had seen a location closer to the beach that could possibly work and the rest was history. That very location near the beach ended up where we would film.

With Jack directing and myself on camera we began to make our way through the storyboard Bonnie had devised. I have to be honest there were parts where we deviated from what was on the storyboard: For example, there is a section where he falls over however it didn’t look natural so we thought of another way to film it. This was where I got a bit carried away with VFX. In the long run I’m pretty sure everyone is happy with it but I wasn’t too sure at the time.

Jack did well as a director, he worked well with David and Kady especially when it came to movements of the actors. There isn’t any dialogue in the scenes so it's mainly physical language instead of verbal. My only advice for Jack would be to do a bit more research on the project before going onto the shoot because there were parts of the shoot where actors would ask questions about their character and I wasn’t confident he knew the answer.

In regards to me, I find it very hard to create something someone else envisions because I’m used to directing and filming projects on my own. I definitely think I improved on this project and having the storyboard and detailed script was a big help. I also felt I should have been more prepared as it didn’t look very good in front of the actors with me fiddling around with the camera because I had set it up in the wrong position.

Overall, I think it was a very fun shoot and it went pretty smoothly. You're going to hit speed bumps on the way but I believe Jack and I handled them well.

Oh also, forgot to mention that I had to also record sound and label all the audio and footage for Heather (why do I almost call you Clair XD) It didn’t take as long as I expected and was actually somewhat therapeutic if you can believe haha.

Post-Production -

The post production process has been going well. We have plenty of time until the deadline and we have already got a very solid draft edit so I’m not worried. I just kind of want to get it finished.

First and foremost, Heather has been doing a fantastic job editing the video. She works efficiently, takes feedback on board and seems to me to have a very solid feel on the fundamentals of editing. Looking at the edit now, there are definite issues but nothing that can’t be solved in 10 minutes. It’s clean, fluid and most of all enjoyable to watch. I’m worried without a synopsis people might not get it but I guess you could see it as “up for interpretation” haha!

Before I talk about my role in the Post-Production process, I just want to mention who else is working on the edit as well. Bonnie is planning on adding some very small animations to the edit to give it that feeling of “not-reality” I think this is crucial because without the animation in the shots. When the man defies the laws of physics it will seem really strange. I believe Tom is doing sound, I’ve supplied them with plenty of audio from on set and am free at anytime to get more for them so it will just be down to when it is completed, I have faith that Tom will create something really special with the Sound design as he will probably blend the sound of the surrounding nature with cold office sounds. I’m excited.

Now onto the part I play. I offered to do the VFX for the film and I’m very happy with them. It’s nothing incredibly tedious to create. It’s very basic motion tracking and keyframing but I think using it in small doses works well and with it accompanied by the animation and sound it will take the film to new levels of quality.

I’m just going to talk about the final VFX shot as it was the most challenging (but fun) part to work on. First, I had to figure out how I was going to get the image of Kady onto the wall without printing her because I realised I would be able to match up the shots if I had just zoomed out from an actual image. So I went for a bit of green paper. I motioned tracked it through After Effects and then played with the colour so it matched the scene. I then added an artificial zoom in Premiere and I got the final result. Now, it is not perfect in any means. I wasn’t able to track back any further than I did so the image in the paper actually moves but with the help of Heather and the use of changing aspect ratios I think it really works. I guess we will have to see how people respond.

So that is about everything on the project. I will be back to reflect next month on the finished project. Hopefully it turns out okay. Hopefully, it doesn’t turn into a train wreck. I’m sure it won’t :)

Complaints/Gripes with Obey Me and ways to fix them (I guess??)

These last few days I’ve been more focused on trying to unlock devil tree spaces so I can get chats that seem interesting, new backgrounds, outfits, etc. the lessons seem to be incredibly difficult and I don’t know if I’ll ever get caught up.

if we had events that ran for the usual time but instead of only having a day or two in between we could have the lesson boosts where there’s a higher chance to get items and you get more xp or make boot camp longer with more rewards

make rainbow glow sticks a surprise guest thing instead of Grimm

Intimacy boosts in battle- you get bonus points for your intimacy with each bro 1-10 an extra 350 per combo, 11-20 500, 21-30 750. Idk if anyone has an intimacy higher than that

Speaking of intimacy: I feel like it’s not balanced??? We didn’t even start full out interacting with belphie until lesson 16(right?) and I have the highest intimacy with him(2nd is Lucy even though I try and avoid it) despite me having mammon or Levi as my home screen most of the time.

Before they shifted the way battles worked my main team was mammon, Satan and Lucy because they were the first 3 ssr cards I got but like I said, out of those 3 Lucy is my highest intimacy. I feel like you get more points with him then the others but that could just be me.

The events are starting to lose quality and I think it’s because they’re always back to back! I love these boys too much to drop them because there isn’t a new event every week! That’ll give us time to work jobs, earn Grimm and strengthen our cards without having to worry about saving AP for the event even though the last one ended 2 days ago.

Duh. But I still like it! I’m just a little bored... this current event is only getting played so I can get the 10 vouchers you get for completing part 1 and to get that ssr asmo. The devs seem to listen to the players occasionally. People said something about them making mammon to light on his cards and they’ve been making him darker(which kind of defeats the purpose since his in game model is still light but that’s probably a pain in the ass to change.

Also, I’m really excited for the stuff they’re doing outside the game, I’m excited for these character songs and the audio dramas are my fave. I’ve been listening to the dramas back to back along with the songs and watching animatics of the dramas
