So I'm re-reading the Lux series by JLA and decided I needed to write this.

Chapter 1 takes place during the same time as the epilogue in Opposition in the Lux Series. Chapter 2 takes place during The Brightest Night in the Origin Series. A warning though: If you DID NOT read THE ORIGIN SERIES, DO NOT READ CHAPTER 2 UNLESS YOU WANT TO BE HELLA SPOILED!

The Burning Shadow by Jennifer L Armentrout

Second in a 4-book series, after the Darkest Star (which I quite enjoyed, only a few weeks ago).

This one... did not enjoy nearly so much. The best part of the first one were all the light and funny bits to break up the incredibly terrible stuff. This one just felt like a series of increasingly terrible things, including some truly heart wrenching deaths.

I mean, I like the plot and the characters and the world building. And the social commentary is certainly pointed (which is good, do that!). But I don't really want to feel so devastatingly bad for hours and hours on end. It really begged for a better balance, more playfulness.

The reveal in the last line... I suspected, even though it seemed impossible as [redacted] said very clearly that she killed him. But given the healing abilities of the luxen, I guess you can't be sure anyone's really dead til their body is well and truly destroyed? Dunno.

Honestly not sure I'll continue with the series. Which is really too bad, as the first book handled the bleakness so well, but this one just felt grim from top to bottom.

i get that it’s fucking hilarious that he’s horrifically sunburned after 300-400 years of vampirism. but do you understand that he’s so utterly connected to and defined by science and humanity and now he’s managed to put both vampirism and science together in a way that allows him to experience humanity again. even just for a bit. do you understand how not normal i am over this. he’s the most human of the vampires and it’s finally paying off for him.

The beasts, sealed away, punching the air while Y/N cookie accepts Elder Faerie’s proposal and the wedding after.

Today is not a good day for the Beasts

You tell him that you do. That you wished to be married to him, now and forever.

The faerie priest asks if Elder Faerie Cookie will do the same.

“I do. Truly, I want nothing more then to be by your side, through the darkest of hours and the brightest of peaks. You, the wonderful cookie who helped saved the Silver Kingdom. And me, the guardian of the silver tree. Together, we may watch over this land as King and King/Queen.”

Shadow Milk Cookie is seething. Hell, all of the Beasts were as they watched from their prisons.

“HOW?! MY PLAN WAS PERFECT! HE…ALL OF THEM WERE SUPPOSED TO LOSE!”

Red Spice Cookie, from within their prison, is trying with all his might to break free. Rage is all he could feel, it feels like his own dough is burning from the sight…

Mystic Flour Cookie sighed solemnly. It looked like Shadow Milk Cookie had failed to convert you fully, a shame that you saw significance in these lesser cookies. Why settle for less? It was beneath a cookie like you.

Cut them all down. That was the plan Silent Salt could conjure up in their head. Destroy every single cookie in their way, reduce them to bits. Remind them why there can only be few cookies that could protect you and it would certainly not be Elder Faerie Cookie…

The other Beasts should be lucky they don’t share a prison with Eternal Sugar Cookie, who’s currently in emotional agony as she struggles to brute force her way out of her prison. She has to watch the brightest light she’s seen getting married right before her eyes. It made her want nothing more then to BURN THE WHOLE KINGDOM DOWN weep into her hands, unable to think of anything else but to MUTILATE ALL OF THEM think of you and what could’ve been…
