If you have a character
And you need a horny design,
'Cross the dell and ring the bell
He wont resign,
Dont worry, cos here is Bruce Timm
That slimy, sweaty pustule that is Bruce Timm
If you say "You're too hard on him"
"You're being far too mean",
But dont forget he shipped a man
And a barely legal teen.

what IS a the chongo show?
The funny thing about the title of “The Chongo Show” is I came up with the name back in my freshman year of college when I wanted to do a Completionist/Caddicarus/PBG/etc style game review channel. It obviously didn’t pan out because honestly ADHD doesn’t allow me the patience to pursue that for a long enough time to finish a video lmao

I can’t believe I’m saying this, but I’m doing my first ever live show to an actual audience. It isn’t a Q+A panel. I’m the warm up act for the beautiful @thecompletionist and I am eternally grateful, but also terrified. It’s in Boston, Massachusetts and immediately after PAX East on March 26th - GET YOUR TICKETS HERE! https://www.ticketweb.com/event/the-completionist-legacy-with-caddicarus-sonia-tickets/12911825?pl=mideastclub I know Instagram doesn’t post links but eh what do you want from me search it on google ya pricks https://www.instagram.com/p/CoYQJzsjzWY/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Some influences on my comic...
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Cartoon CARTOONS. Pretty self-explanatory. Cartoon Network practically raised me in the late 1990s and early-to-mid 2000s. I liked Nickelodeon a lot, too, but I gravitated towards CN for not only their dynamic and varied original shows, but also their then *vast* library of Warner Bros. cartoons, MGM cartoons, and the Hanna-Barbera catalogue. And of course, [adult swim] had a massive influence on this as well. The varied art styles alone, they're just so burned into my brain, how can I not draw something and have it look kinda like - say - DEXTER'S LABORATORY or THE GRIM ADVENTURES OF BILLY & MANDY?
youtube
CRASH BANDICOOT in general, particularly the original trilogy for the PS1 from Naughty Dog, and CRASH BANDICOOT 4: IT'S ABOUT TIME... Absolutely. In fact, when I was watching a playthrough of IT'S ABOUT TIME from a favorite commentary group (BrainScratchComms guest starring Caddicarus), they were on the space levels, and they talked about going to restaurants like Denny's at 4am... And I just got this image of two characters in a diner somewhere in the cosmos, just up super-late and eating this early in the morning. That was more or less the genesis of my webcomic, in addition to a few other things... In a way I gotta thank them for that. Anyways, the space and futuristic city levels in the CRASH games? Big influences, from CRASH BANDICOOT: WARPED's Future Frenzy/Gone Tomorrow to CRASH 4's Bermugula's Orbit. Yes indeed.
youtube
Not just GALAGA... But also the cabinet art to *many* '70s and '80s arcade games. Heck, just games from that period alone. The Golden Age of Video Games. A long-time passion and hyperfixation of mine. But I wanted to include the GALAGA art specifically, given the space setting.
youtube
The logo for GALAGA was an influence on my studio logo. The art style for many arcade cabinets, for me, recalls the mesmerizing and varied art of '60s and early '70s album covers...
Hence... The inclusion of a late 1960s album cover. That's for CAULDRON by Fifty-Foot Hose, a short-lived San Francisco psych-rock group. CAULDRON, by some accounts, was either a late 1967 or late 1968 release. Either way, the album - which I totally hear when drawing for this comic - is like a mix of that Frisco psych vibe with lots of homemade electronic instruments drizzling cosmic effects throughout. Quite a unique and game-changing album, a little ahead of its time perhaps. This was around the same time the Silver Apples' self-titled debut came out, which was also a marriage of psychedelic rock and otherworldly mechanic noises.
youtube
...
Now for some real-life people who were inspirations for the main character, Terra Forma...
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
So we've got... Avril Lavigne, Ashnikko, Lauran Hibberd, and Debbie Harry of - in case someone lives under a rock - Blondie fame.
I feel Terra's a got a little bit of the early aughts pop-punk edge of Lavigne (heck, she STILL has that edge. One of her new songs, 'Bite Me', is a BANGER), and certainly Ashnikko's blue hair. I feel Ashnikko's music also has a unique edge to it, as does they, and there's a peculiar weirdness to them that I feel Terra and her weird-ass adventures kind of line up with. Hibberd also has that pop/punk rock kickass girl edge, too. What I also find great about Hibberd is how she unabashedly talks about her IBS. I suffer from IBS, and so does Terra. I guess being so cool means you have to be cursed with a garbage stomach! And of course, Debbie Harry needs next to no explanation, an OG punk rock chick.
Funny how they are all musicians... Terra dabbled in that before!

Things that will always make me laugh in any mood:
-The part in Suzy Izzard's bit about James Bond gadgets with the jam trousers. Just "hold on... he's wearing jam trousers! ... Let's swim away, shall we"
-Every time in Caddicarus' MegaMan video where he goes "and you can slide up ladders" and shows it with a goofy sound effect

on august 21st, 2014, i was a 12-year-old in 7th grade who was just finding out about the hidden block/normalboots collective of game reviewers.
on august 21st, 2014, i found caddicarus - who would have a huge impact on my life for the next 4 years.
during those 4 years i had many fandom shenanigans. made some great memories, made some not-so-great memories.
i remember when he was an android fanboy. i remember when he didn't like pizza. i remember when his voice was higher and when he had the buzzcut. the stock grungy background and aesthetic. the frosty cooltext generated logo. that iconic gong noise at the beginning of the intro. when the intro didn't even have music at all - do fans these days even remember that the intro was once a heavenly chant with no music?
"🎵ay ay ay ay ay, ay ay ay ay, subscribe...🎵"
"that's how we do it in my garden!"
"CYOAR!"
i remember rushing home one day in march 2015 to watch him on PBG's minecraft hardcore. i remember when he first got his tattoos. i remember how the audience was divided over his mohawk.
many sunday afternoons were spent waiting for the new video to come out. being the young devoted fan i was, i started drinking pepsi after he said he preferred it over coke. i called it "the official drink of the beautiful people".
i remember in 2016 when he got rid of all those extra shows and made the caddicarus show weekly. and i remember when the sub count slowed around the same time. but we as the fanbase made do with what we had.
i left in late 2018 around the time he hit 600,000 subs. i left to pursue other fandom endeavors - long story short, i moved onward. 😉
in the 4 years since i've left, caddy pretty much addressed every criticism people had with his videos and he's been thriving more than he ever has. and even though his videos are no longer for me personally, i still respect him with every fiber of my being.
now, it's august 22nd, 2022. i'm 20 years old. i haven't watched a caddicarus video in god knows how long. when i think of caddicarus, the color blue still comes to mind. that shows you right there.
yet, as i sat silently in the college library, on the first day of junior year, i held my hands on my heart and teared up as i saw caddy do the same and then lie down on his side as he saw the long-awaited number show up on his screen.
i took a big sip of the pepsi sitting next to me. and even after i found out that he hates the US version of pepsi, i still drank it with pride. because it shows that the impact he and his videos made on me is still visible to this day. and also because...pepsi really is better than coke.
i am aware of what caddy thinks of the pre-2020 era. i recognize that he wasn't exactly making the videos he wanted to make and that he regrets them now. but we wouldn't be where we are today if they never existed. they still made an impact.
i remember when we never thought he'd hit 1 million subs. i remember checking socialblade and the prediction for the 1 million sub milestone was...actually pretty accurate. it projected he'd reach 1 million when i was in the middle of college. but at the time, it was still 6 years away. which is a long time in internet years.
but he's so resilient. that's 10 years of blood, sweat, and tears poured into the channel. and within those videos - no matter what he thinks of them now - are the childhood/teenhood memories of many, many people. nerdy and geeky kids who found a part of youtube that understood their nerdy and geeky interests. kids who finally felt validated after finding other people who enjoyed the same videos. kids who then had internet friends to talk about their interests with. kids who finally found their voice...and began to make videos of their own.
thank you so much jim. thank you for all you've done. you have given me and now a million other people so much happiness and joy. i hope you continue to thrive and inspire millions of people. stay beautiful. 💜💙💜

I didn't watch The Little Mermaid this weekend, but I did see 2013's Turbo, a movie about a snail with The Flash powers who races in the Indy 500 to teach a couple of taco truck owners to believe in their dreams.
...I realize that sounds like I'm making fun of it but I actually really liked it.
Tumblr media
The cast is star-studded but are doing genuinely good voice performances, so it doesn't take you out of the movie. ...Except for Sam Jackson who is just Nick Fury the Snail. But why wouldn't Nick Fury the Snail be cool?, and he is. Without superpowers himself, he has basically already learned the lesson Turbo is learning, and so is materially supporting Turbo's journey. It is a surprisingly endearing addition to the proceedings.
The production design is gorgeous, really good use of high-contrast lighting for dramatic effect, and shots that throw speed right into your eyeballs. Turbo's shell emitting glowing blue speed trails looks neat and solves the problem of how anyone sees him outpacing Formula 1 cars. This lost money because they certainly shouldn't have spent $200+ million on it, but the money certainly shows.
"IT'S JUST A RIP-OFF OF CARS!" Sort of. But the movie was actively developed as "Fast and the Furious, but with snails," so it wears its inspirations on its sleeve. Which is fine - this is DreamWorks, so there are pop songs anyway and Snoop Dogg is there.
It was criticized for feeling like something an 8 year old would come up with, playing in a garden. I don't understand why that is a bad thing.
Plus I love how the snails use their eyes on stalks like little arms with fists to manipulate things. And the way Turbo gets his powers is just the right kind of comic book nonsense. And the snails can all clearly speak and understand English, but no one else can hear them. DreamWorks always brings the weird Bee Movie world-building to these things that Disney won't, which makes the DreamWorks movies goofier and more memorable, at least to me, a jaded old man.
It leaves Netflix on June 1st, probably headed somewhere free, because this movie is so forgotten I didn't even remember it until I rewatched a video where Caddicarus referenced it. It's too good to be so easily dismissed.
