Is it me or do some fans scapegoat Ada for Capcom not doing anything else with the RE female characters? Even though Ada isn't even allowed to appear in media without Leon (and even then, she doesn't always appear with him).
I wouldn't say it's just you, but I would say the latest Resident Evil content this year is stirring a pot much faster than when RE7 dropped when it comes to how they handle these characters and the franchise as a whole. They want to make everything more serious. They want to pander to certain groups of fans when it comes to character direction. They're trying to bring back the horror without understanding the spikes of comedy and cheesiness whether or not they were accidental is what makes the series so iconic, but that's a slightly different conversation. So, let's focus on Ada.
Listen. Ada has always been a character in a precarious situation when it comes to fandom. There's a lot of "interesting" qwhite people who love Leon so much they see her as a personal threat with their misogyny. She's a visible woman of color, which gets her hit with the racism. She's allegedly Chinese, as she could also be Taiwanese or Cantonese, or a different ethnicity since we don't even know her real name, so she gets hit with xenophobia overseas. She's also not a "nice" person who babies Leon, so she gets hit with the double misogyny from those same "interesting" qwhite people who never draw Leon with brown hair even though that's his canonical hair color. She's a woman so showing her as capable without the sexiness slapped onto her makes her "ugly" and makes the 3% of fans who yell about it the loudest cry and scream so much that Capcom will rope it back into her character however they can.
Then we have current fandom itself, and how it's changed, and how it's not changed at all. I saw a post I can't find at the moment stating the current waves of fandom have this new pattern with people who don't want to seem like they're misogynist or sexist, so they'll say the women characters are great and then do nothing for them. No rambling about them. Barely any fanart. Very little headcanons. The tiniest amount of fanfic, and if they get any of these things there has to be a male character the artist clearly favorites in the spotlight of the piece. The pieces of art that are women focused get half as much attention as the male focused pieces. Those same fandom pieces get 1/4 of that attention when the characters are visible women of color not at their sexiest, cutest, or palest form. The original poster I spoke of was obviously right. If you don't believe me, look at how many notes any "good" Leon post gets compared to the other women, and you'll start to see a pattern very quickly.
Ada is the easiest to vilify because fandom always hates "mean" women, women of color, and women point blank. Hell, the racist's vitriol was so bad they removed Sheva from various editions of the game cover of RE5 and left it as Chris or put Jill there when you can only play with her in the DLC. It doesn't help with how Ada's writing is handled over the years, that fandom loves to put her on a proverbial stake saying she took attention or a possible role from Claire, or Jill, or even Rebecca now that she's getting more attention. But they'll more loudly say how Ada is taking attention from Piers, or Luis, or even fucking Birkin. It's not entirely about how they diss and scapegoat Ada, it's the bullshit all around the diss they're making. It's about who they would personally slot in to replace her or any woman character, and why they would do that which speaks the loudest to me. If you pay attention, you'll see what wavelength their brains are running on when they drop that nonsense.
Now hear me out. I came into Resident Evil after watching all of Lupin III. Quick summary, it's an old manga that got an anime in the early 70s, and is still getting remade today about a group of thieves who steal expensive shit.
There's only 1 woman in the main recurring cast, Fujiko Mine, and since everyone has a gimmick, her's is sex appeal and that there's a 50/50 chance she'll steal the treasure from the group of men for herself at the end. No matter how many times she does this, Lupin III as a character loves her regardless. He knows that changing her means he'd have to change himself, neither of which would be a good thing, because change doesn't always mean improvement. She has been handled by so many men and a few women writers for the last 50 years I've seen all the possible ways a femme fatale can be written super well and super poorly. And even though she does all of the exact same shit as Lupin does, fans(new fans especially) will still call her a bitch. And I've had to call people out a million times with 1:1 canon comparisons to make them see it's the misogyny glasses they're looking through when they make this judgement about her.
This also means I came in looking at the Leon and Ada relationship from a completely different angle than probably 99% of the active members of the RE fandom on this site. I can see where she's written improperly for the chances she does get to appear, but I can see the potential in it, and I can see and understand how their relationship is structured the way it is. I do believe that Ada having time to herself without Leon in the game or Leon even being a priority is desperately needed for her character. I also think this narrative decision will scapegoat her further because fandom will say that attention should've gone to [Insert Male Character Here] that is an old character brought back or a completely new white guy in his 30s on the side of good who talks to another main dude for about 2 times if that much.
However, if anyone who read this far would like to see who's actually taking all the attention in an RE movie or RE game, feel free to do a tally for how many times each character gets to speak and compare the final numbers when you're done. For the games, repeated lines do not count to make it a little easier.

Well, I thought I wasn't going to watch this season because I've been so ambivalent about the skams lately, but I saw @drucktranslations's link on my dash and I thought, "eh why not, it's not like I'm giving them views."
Some of my thoughts:
This is so very clearly a reference to Amira's first clip.
I find that a bit odd, I guess, because I don't remember Mailin being written as that uncomfortable with sex talk before. I don't remember the cashqueens talking about sex before either, but I mean, Mailin happily asked Fatou whether she was into girls in s5, and helped matchmake Ava and Marc in s6. It just feels like this specific trait hasn't been shown before this season.
Of course, while Sana asked the Norwegian girl squad to change the topic, Mailin just kind of finds an excuse to move away from the table. I'm guessing in the hopes that the conversation will have moved on when she's back. But, the cashqueens sort of apologizing to Mailin for the sex talk is super reminiscent of Kiki apologizing to Amira for the same.
I just couldn't help but be reminded of Sam M'Pele when Ava talked about masturbation. Like, Sam was by far the most explicit about the fact she masturbated and how, and now they're doing this with Ava too. Sam was a fairly popular character, in no small part because she was just comic relief, and always stayed in her lane. And I wonder if this is how these writers are going to make Ava palatable to Ava haters. It would be qwhite interesting if they chose to slot Mailin into an Amira role, and Ava into a Sam role. (Any bets on Ava ending up the gen without a LI like Sam?)
I love the stuff about the zero waste movement, BUT I wish they'd included Nora possibly being a recipient of such an organization tbh. It's like they forgot that Nora and Zoe depend on government help in order to live on their own and not depend on their mother.

Qwhite interesting how one woman touching her husband’s back is seen as “possessive” and “dominating”, while another woman doing the same is called “tender” and “affectionate”

The entire One Chicago franchise is a mess when it comes to the romantic components of the series. But Chicago PD continues to be the most uninspired, boring, and redundant mess when it comes to their romantic ships and how they display them.
It's as if someone holds a gun to their head and says "let's choose the most basic, young, white heteronormative relationships and smack a cutesy name on them. Fandom will eat it up!" And without fail, fandom always does.
Tumblr media
It's bad enough that half the Intelligence Unit thinks they can only date or sleep with each other. It's also bad enough that it further contributes to Chicago PD's ongoing issue with rarely knowing what to do with its female characters beyond specific plots I've come to call the "traditionally feminine womanly plots" and tying them in with a male character where everything about them hinges on their connection to a male. And also that "there can only be one" issue where only one of the female characters can serve as the primary one while the others duke it out for screentime, plot, and relevancy (congrats on always winning Lindsay and Hailey).
But they recycle the same things ad nauseum. For eight seasons, they would rather devote all of their time cooking up romantic subplots that exclusively feature a constant rotation of Ruzek and Halstead. I get it, they're attractive, hell, I'm no stranger to thirsting over Ruz myself, but they're the lotharios of the unit as if only they can be desirable, and it's gotten so old. My God.
Tumblr media
They would rather give us these two involved with mostly young and white women, especially their squad mates, then devote screentime to literally any alternative couple.
I mean they have SHARED a love interest. Why? The only ships they have ever devoted significant screentime or development to: Halstead and Erin, Halstead and Upton, Ruzek and Burgess, Ruzek and Upton, Burgess and Roman. Qwhite shocking, I know.
Trudy and Mouch have one of the sweetest crossover romances from the franchise, and it's so refreshing to see a middle-aged couple find love, and yet, they've all but cooled off showing them, rarely give that ship screentime, and it tends to stay in the peripheral compared to the big ships.
Tumblr media
Dawson had a romance with Brett from Chicago Fire (another character who gets passed around to the point of absurdity), but they did very little with it, and most of THAT even took place on CF.
They gave Dawson something troubling with another law enforcement officer or whatever for like a single episode, but hell, they still devoted more time and actual arcs to the two or three times where they put Halsted in similar relationships because of course they did.
Never forget that the first relationship that dates pre-series was Chicago Fire's Gabby with *spins wheel* you guessed it, Jay Halstead.
Tumblr media
And of course there was Erin and Severide. So pretty. So ... basic.
Yet they never attempted to give us more of Dawson and his wife or Olinsky and his. The women were barely characters on the series. It would've been something.
I don't mind Burzek. Out of all the ships, I enjoy them most more often than not, but it has been eight seasons of will they/won't they bullcrap that they've drawn out. All of these ups and downs. The one non-cop related romance Burgess had lasted all of a second and ended in tragedy because heaven forbid they DON'T put that woman through endless pain.
Tumblr media
But they've always remained the second place ship of the series, and it's just... enough. Meanwhile, we started the series with Erin and Halstead monopolizing screentime with their romantic situationship drama, and instead of giving it a rest and changing things up when she left, they switched it out with the Halstead and Hailey will they/won't they. Why?
Heaven forbid Halstead or Ruzek don't have a piece of ass.
Ruzek was even Trudy's choice for a relationship ruse to dupe her father.
Tumblr media
In the meantime, one of the most outlandish and unrealistic parts of this series is that Kevin Atwater-- young, smart, just as hot as Chicago PD's golden, pretty, white boys hasn't had a real, significant romantic storyline in the eight years this series has been on air.
In what universe does that make sense? Single, eligible, employed, decent black man? Da faq?
Pardon my bluntness but Kevin Atwater should be seeing more ass than a toilet seat. The fact that he isn't batting folks off with a stick is ludicrous.
Tumblr media
He had ONE fkd up romantic storyline in his one "very special black Kevin" episode in season SIX and that's it. Pardon me? Do you know how many of those Jay has had? Twice or more than Kevin.
On a series that pairs up colleagues like it's their mission, they never once even considered taking the Burgess and Atwater relationship in any other direction beyond platonic (and even that is underused these days). I'm not even saying I would've wanted that. I'm just pointing out that it made no sense given their track record to not even tease it. But Kevin is only good for platonic purposes, I suppose.
Tumblr media
The fact that they put all their eggs in a potential Atwater and Rojas ship, that never even came to fruition, in season SEVEN of a series Atwater has been in since the beginning when characters like Adam and Jay have already had two relationships or more under their belts by then is ridiculous.
And then there's Voight. He's the lead character and never once had a romantic storyline. If he were younger, you already know they would've went there a few times over.
Yet the closest Hank has come to one is an ambiguous scene with him talking to a sex worker in a hotel room back in, like, season two. Are we to believe that he has never once developed feelings for or even had sex with anyone else since his wife died? He's never moved on after that?
Tumblr media
They could easily allude to him being on an ace or demi spectrum if they want, even if I would side eye them for choosing the older character to do it, but if that's the case, they should do something with that.
Even a storyline with a widowed, middle- aged hardass finding love or getting some would be infinitely more interesting and at the very least something different than the same old same old Ruzek & Halstead merry-go-round. Damn, the 50 and over crowd need love too.
And yet Chicago PD keeps feeding us the same bland diet repackaged.
Fine. Burzek has been a thing from the beginning. But after Jay and Erin WHY did they need Hailey and Jay? And if they were going to do Jay and Hailey, why in the mother loving fk did we need Hailey and Adam?
Tumblr media
The good sis bagged not one but both of the coveted white boys.
I mean, just for variety, Dawson was right there. Kevin was right there. I wouldn't have been a fan, but hell, it would at least be something different. Much better than acting as if Halstead and Ruzek are the only viable romantic options.
Why subject her to that?
Isn't it bad enough that she's more often than not reduced to being Lindsay Lite anyway? They struggle to give her a presence that deviates and distinguishes her from Erin as is. From her troubled past, and her stage of being mini- Voight and challenging his authority, to this thing with Jay.
Hell, they even repeated a whole job offer thing.
Mind you, don't get me started on how they missed what should've been the obvious chance to make Hailey queer. If I'm stepping on toes, my bad, but everything about Hailey screamed bi or lesbian. She radiated queer energy, but INSTEAD they chose to pair her with not one but both of CPD's romantic male leads.
Why beat this well-tread path yet again?
Of all the possibilities, and all the different avenues they can explore, they just keep dipping into that same well, and it's so tiresome. It's so unoriginal and uninspired. Yes, it's just so basic. I'm talking 20th century shipping... CPD is so outdated with this and it makes it hard to invest or care about any of them, especially if you already aren't inclined to ship within the series as is.
Shock me. Thrill me. Intrigue me. Bloody hell.

could you talk about why you're so into ian/mickey? i don't know tha tmuch about them (only watched a few of scenes of them together) but they just seem. toxic.
oh boy can i!
Tumblr media
so the thing you’ve gotta understand about Ian/Mickey is that Shameless (US) first aired in January 2011. For reference, Glee started airing in 2009 and Blaine and Kurt kissed on primetime television in March 2011 and there were like, a lot of articles, in real newspapers and magazines about that kiss. It was referred to (erroneously, but people were excited) as the first show to have a primetime kiss between two men. While there was definitely LGBTQ+ media, there were not a lot of queer folks existing on primetime or premium television and there definitely weren’t a lot of them who were teenagers. I don’t think Shameles was the first to depict anything, but it was definitely one of the first shows in American television to show a relationship like Ian and Mickeys and be so popular.
Because Shamess wasn’t always a bad show! Shameless used to be critically acclaimed, it used to regularly nominated for Emmys and shit.
Ian is the whole reason I started watching Shameless. I was young and fannish and excited to see a gay character on screen. I was young enough to not be as squicked by Ian’s first relationship on the show as I was when I rewatched Season 1 a few weeks ago (Ian’s first boyfriend on the show is Kash, who’s older, married with kids and also Ian’s boss). And it was a desert for easily accessible queer content (I was watching a lot of queer movies at the time but there’s a real difference between a movie and a on-going TV show narratively) with an oasis or two that was usually shaped like a pretty white boy.
Also. To speak to your notion of toxicity. You’re right. Ian and Mickey’s relationship is relatively toxic. If I knew them in real life I’d be telling both of them to get into therapy and also break the fuck up immediately. But back then and now, I find it refreshing to watch a story about two people that are in a context where money is very much an issue, and they’ve grown up shaped by poverty and crime as totally normal things.
(Don’t…don’t get me started on the ways Shameless fails around the racial politics of Southside of Chicago. The cast is qwhite monochrome but its even worse when they try to engage with race. Liam’s whole character is just. Yikes.)
Pop culture and fandom are really drawn to characters that are middle-to-upper class or characters that don’t exist in situations where money is a concern. Ian and Mickey are poor, and they’ve been to prison a time or two and they’ve beaten each other bloody a time or two. There was a recent episode where they both thought the other killed their (shared) parole officer and didn’t believe the other when both denied killing her. It was played for laughs but that’s some fucking rich narrative material. Ian got compared to Kurt a lot when Shameless started and got called “real”. I mean, I’m not really here for erasing the experiences of LGBTQ+ kids (good or bad) because they’ve theoretically got some financial privilege, but obviously people were getting something from Ian that they weren’t getting from Kurt.
Then there’s Mickey Milkovich. Uhm, CWs for sexual assault, parental abuse
So listen. To keep it one-hundo, if they re-did all of Shameless from Mickey’s perspective, I’d eat it up with a spoon. Because all the time the show has spent on Ian trying to “get out” and failing or succeeding and then ultimately failing, there’s been Mickey fuckin’ Milkovich. Mickey, who embraced the family name and family reputation of being a thug. Mickey, who’s a bottom (like. he claimes this, this isn’t me putting that label on him) and been relatively nonplussed about it and how it lines up with his masculinity for a decade now. Mickey, who was forced, literally. at gunpoint. by his father to have sex with a woman and then did his damndest to take care of her and his kid and his boyfriend for months. Mickey who constructed what was essentially an elopement for Ian despite having not seen him for what months? (years? time isn’t real on Shameslss), an elopement that would have worked if only for a while.
Tbh I started watching Shamless S10 because Mickey came back. And the fact that they’ve given Ian and Mickey more space in Season 10 only confirmed that they’re one of the most interesting elements of Shameless and Mickey is one of the most interesting characters on the show. If they’d actually give their relationship time and space to breath, they’d probably get nominated for some more awards.
But they aren’t, so they won’t. So I’ll just keep writing deeply frustrated fanfiction.
ETA: I posted and thought about a clarification. I think Mickey’s character benefits from not getting the over-writing that Ian’s character gets. Whether its because of behind the scenes stuff or just because Ian is both part of this huge ship and a Gallagher, he gets more screentime than Mickey and his stories for the last ten seasons have been all over the place. I feel like I know and understand Mickey much more as a character than Ian. He’s not fundamentally that different from himself in S1. There are some fundamental changes but his core personality is pretty much the same. Where as Ian’s character feels like he’s changed a lot over the last seasons. So like. Its not that I like Mickey and dislike Ian (well. mostly not.) and more that I think Mickey’s a better written character.

dude and they even snubbed another (better) very similar movie about hollywood because (it stars eddie murphy) (has colors other than beige) (spent money on a plot instead of sexy car shots) it’s actually a discussion of the toxicity of la culture instead of a glorification :/// and isn’t the irishman about like?? philly gangs??? give me a movie about the pow cabbie i had in belfast who said you could tell the irish from the british based on how ugly they were, at least he had a personality
I MEAN. It’s really qwhite interesting how the academy ends up with these monochromatic best picture nominees!
(But it’s okay, they can pat themselves on the back for getting on the Parasite bandwagon.)
Scorsese needs to meet your Irish cabbie! :) And I’ll also introduce him to the two cars full of rugby teammates drinking Guinness beer who helped us change a flat tire in the middle of the Irish countryside. But because this old dog knows literally only one trick, his movie is of course about gangsters in a Northeast city.

Yo that black batmom reader really had me shook LMAO! I never thot I'd see a black batmom since everybody clearly writes the supposed reader insert...qwhite interesting. I cannot wait to see more of your writing like that with other characters, especially more black batmom stuff sjnsns. You did us black girls a good service sis. THANK YOU 😊
This, brought me to tears. I had to wait a few days just to properly respond @narusaku-girl . I have loved so many characters, but Tumblr is filled with stories where the reader is qwhite different from what I or most black women look like without severely altering our appearance (skin bleaching, changing our eye color, perms/weave, etc;). So I saw that WE needed something. So I really am looking forward to requests coming in, cause black girls need love too.

The backlash for one particular arc in THE LAST JEDI doesn’t make any sense when you examine what actually transpires in the movie. SPOILERS BELOW:
I’m going to say this again and again, but it’s worth repeating because I’m sick of the hate that the Finn/Rose arc is receiving especially when a lot of it doesn’t make sense? A lot of people are saying that that particular arc was “pointless” and resulted in a failure. But mind you, so was Rey’s arc.
Rey accepted a side mission to Luke’s island by Leia and on Ahch-To, she learned about the Force. But she ultimately failed to bring Luke back to aid the Resistance. So she settled for Ben Solo to turn the tide of the war. However, instead of bringing back Ben Solo, he betrayed her (by proposing she rule by his side despite her side of their shared vision saying otherwise) after their throne room fight, thereby endangering her friends by causing the rise of Supreme Leader Kylo Ren. Similarly, Finn accepted a side mission with Rose Tico by Poe to Canto Bight and on the casino planet, they both learned about the effects of war and slavery. But they ultimately failed to find the actual code breaker to aid the Resistance. So they settled for DJ to help them disable the hyperspace tracking and save the fleet. However, instead of DJ helping them out, he betrayed them (by turning them into Phasma/Hux despite their negotiated deal saying otherwise) after finding the tracker, thereby endangering their friends by causing the transports to be snuffed out one by one. Both storylines converged on the Supremacy (resulting in respective costumes changes and elevator scenes), which is the climax of the movie. I think the throne room scene and the Phasma/FInn fight scene were meant to be the most heightened part of the movie. And shortly thereafter, everything fell to shit.
Both storylines resulted in failure, which causes disappointment right? But these failures are valuable, and it sparks hope and change. Yoda spoke it clearly enough when he appeared to Luke:
“The greatest teacher, failure is.”
It’s literally right in the movie. Luke failed Kylo when he tried to kill him. Rey failed to turn Kylo because all she cared about was the Resistance. Kylo failed to move on because he wanted power. Finn and Rose failed because they didn’t find the right codebreaker. Poe failed Leia by not listening to her commands regarding the dreadnought situation.  Everyone failed in this film. It wasn’t just Finn and Rose. So why are people only complaining about their arc and not Rey’s/Kylo’s? Why are people bashing and spreading hate about their arc but not Rey’s/Kylo’s? It’s qwhite interesting, isn’t it?
Despite their failures, each arc left huge impacts for the next movie and their failures weren’t for naught. Kylo Ren might be the new Supreme Leader, but through his bond with Rey, his inabilty to move on from the past, his last showdown with Luke, and his remaining familial relationship with Leia, he’s started his redemption arc. He will be the spark to turn the tide of the war. Similarly, Finn and Rose trashed Canto Bight and freed the fathiers, which meant that those enslaved children weren’t going to have work so hard and Finn and Rose inspired them to fight for the Resistance. These nobody children, just like Rey, will be part of the spark that will turn the tide of the war.
One storyline was just more dramatic than the other. One storyline was just more lighthearted than the other. But both storylines shared equal screentime, weight and purpose to the larger theme of the movie, which is spoken by none other than Rose Tico herself:
“We're going to win this war not by fighting what we hate, but saving what we love.”
It’s accepting failure, learning from it, and moving on. The characters have to persist and keep trying to do better. That’s what resistance is about. That’s what hope is about. That’s what love is about. That’s what Star Wars is about. It’s surviving for another day. It’s spreading love instead of hate. It’s listening to women when they speak to you. So all those fanboys complaining and bashing the Finn/Rose arc? They obviously didn’t understand THE LAST JEDI. But I know that there are people out there who do, so let’s respect people’s opinions, let’s let people ship who they want to ship and let’s take this movie’s message to heart, shall we?
Fin.

I’m lowkey HEATED rn!!!!! Shea Coulee was so so robbed and I knew it at the time but this just confirms it 100% for me. Alsoooooo I find it qwhite interesting that since the show moved to VH1 there have been 3 instances where a black queen has been passed on for top 2 (and 2 instances where they highkey should’ve won the damn thing).........,,.,,..
vh1 changed the format of the show because they make more money if they cater to fans and having white fan favourites win makes them more $$$. Drag race isn’t about drag in their hands 🤷‍♀️

Seriously though what white people that get pissed about POC being cast as established characters that were white in some other form of media don’t understand is that the race of those characters in the past was never a key element of their story, and changing their race doesn’t negatively affect white Hollywood (or the white people as a whole) at all. TV and movies are so fucking oversaturated with white actors that a white actor taking the role of a POC not only erases a component of a character that was most likely important to their story, but it also is damaging for actors of color who have so few roles that they’re in the running for to begin with because of white privilege in casting situations. It won’t kill y’all to see a POC playing your white fave because the characers whiteness has no significance as it relates to the character (or it shouldn’t but apparatently it does to some of y’all fdhskfhlsdj)
Also, it’s qwhite interesting that white people love to preach about how POC should get things based on merit and not race, and then as soon as casting directors stop looking for white actors and broaden their horizons to POC and POC get those roles because they were the best ones for the job... it’s not about how well they did in their audition compared to other (white) people that you didn’t even see, it’s about race.

Everything has to be about her all guys have to be in love with her now they said on wondercon they changed the triangle into Archie, Betty and Jughead and Veronica and Archieronnie will just be ignored?? Qwhite interesting ain't it? So like Elena she has two guys fighting for her and even Cheryl told her in episode 3 " Get over yourself Betty it's not all about you." Which reminded me of Rebekah telling Elena it's not all about her :D
I got really confused with this ask because my name is Rebekah lmao
And I’ve never heard of Elena but sounds like Betty to me. Also the reason they couldn’t do the archiebettyronnie love triangle is that archieronnie is way to powerful and there even being competition between Ronnie and Betty is unrealistic.
