The warm lighting as Luke holds Percy at sword point because Percy trusts Luke. Luke would never hurt him.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Then Luke later betraying Percy in the very same woods and hurting him with the same sword as the lighting shifts to this ominous dark purple
Tumblr media Tumblr media
i could write an essay on how the writers use lighting as a method of storytelling

samuel dalton lore conclusion
none of the contestants even know they're filming game changer
some sort of hotel escape room situation
the contestants finally kill sam in revenge
stanford prison experiment

In some ways, I wonder if Tula is Brennan's chance to revisit some of the feelings Caramelinda struggled with. Both are women who lost their partner and had to deal with the fallout in ways that asked them to de-prioritize their own feelings and well-being.
At some point for Caramelinda, pushing it down meant trying to love Jet and Ruby in ways that prepared them for the heartbreak and hardness she dealt with without letting them into the hurt yoked around her own neck.
Tula, I think, shows us how kind and gentle and loving that desire to protect can look like before it turns brittle and alienating between parent and child. Caramelinda kept her love for Lazuli buried; Tula is burying her kids in her love for Geoffrey. At the center of both, I think, is a simmering wound and anger.
Caramelinda's was dragged out of her by a greater grief; I can't help but wonder if Tula's, too, will only fully emerge after she loses something more precious than her husband. Or will Lila and Jaysohn lose her and inherit the way she holds her anger under wraps? Will their love of her turn into a memorial clouding the anger underneath until it's too late for them, too?

Painting Jet's forest always makes me think of what a tragic character he is. Throughout the series, the dominant colors in the episode usually correspond to the nation they are in (the Water Tribe episodes have lots of blue, the Earth Kingdom episodes have lots of brown and green, etc.) but the episode "Jet" stands out because it's so red (Fire Nation) when they're in the Earth Kingdom. In a way it symbolizes how Jet and the Freedom Fighters don't move past their trauma, they live in a forest surrounded by their enemies colors. I think it's an interesting detail.
(The orange and red paint I use for the trees in Jet's forest are called Flame and Dragon's Blood, respectively.)

Ready for a hot NATLA take?
The live-action DID include an adaptation of The Great Divide episode.
Instead of Sokka identifying with the war-like, meat eating, not prim and proper tribe and thinking 'yeah, I identify with them, therefore I'm on their side and will argue they can't be wrong' he identified with Sai, the mechanist where Sokka saw reflected his desire to be more than a 'great warrior' but also to use his mind and ingenuity to help his friends - therefore he didn't want Sai to be wrong.
Instead of Katara identifying with the prim and proper, well prepared, educated and clean tribe and thinking 'yeah, I identify with them, therefore I'm on their side and will argue they can't be wrong', she identified with Jet the freedom fighter where Katara saw reflected her anger, pain and desire to fight back against the fire nation as well as create a community to help people who were harmed be healed - therefore she didn't want Jet to be wrong.
The live-action was able to take the theme and lesson from one of the most maligned episodes of the animated series and reframe it within other plot lines to make it so much more poignant and nuanced, pushing forward a lot more character development than 'Sokka is dirty and lazy, Katara is uptight and prissy'. The live-action took the lesson and actually tied it to Katara and Sokka's core character motivations that will have arcs for them rather than surface-level character traits that never really change.
Anyways, the live action adaptation of Avatar the Last Airbender is really good and y'all should watch it - or rewatch it with an open mind to why they combined/altered the story elements they did. The writers clearly understand this world and the story the OG was trying to tell.

I love how strong Randy is, especially when it comes to carrying Howard, and how it is never discussed in the show. It’s never used to elevate Randy, but it’s also never used as a joke to put down Howard. The only time they comment on the fact that Randy can easily carry him is to set up a joke that Howard thinks it’s embarrassing…and then he’s like nvm pls carry me I need you 😭😭 It’s one of the few things they did correctly regarding H’s weight, if you ask me lol
