whizzoqualityassortment replied to your post "Cary Grant and Randolph Scott's Hollywood Story:…"
The saddest and most poignant part of Grant and Scott’s story is towards the end when, as two old men, they sat in a Hollywood restaurant and ate lunch, and gazed lovingly at each other. I like to imagine an eternity for them — like that.
@whizzoqualityassortment Oh god. And here I thought the end of the Vanity Fair article was heartbreaking enough, talking about how Grant and Scott's relationship ultimately ended because it wasn't allowed to fully progress, due to the overwhelmingly homophobic strictures of the era, and the ongoing criminalization of LGBTQ+ people. Reading Grant's words near the end just about shattered me:
Most poignantly, Grant confessed to the pain of saying goodbye to the love of his life, all those years ago: “It was dreadful having to let go of him in my heart.”
No one should have to say goodbye to the person they love for the sole reason that other people have decided it is unacceptable. Also that phrase that you used ("gaze lovingly") of course made me think of Michael and David, because that's exactly how they look at each other, and it makes me ache inside to imagine them having to stop for any reason.
Thinking about Grant and Scott at that lunch, I can't help wondering how wistful they might have felt--happy to be with each other, but also deeply sad for the years they didn't get to have together. I would like to hope that things are different enough now that, if there is something between Michael and David, they can be open about it (in whatever way is right for them), and will never have to experience such heartache.
An eternity like that is such a beautiful thought, and I'm so glad that you have shared it. Although both Grant and Scott are long gone, I can see the echoes of them in Michael and David. How precious and rare love like that is. How lucky are they all to have to found it...

one thing about hbo is that when they get a journalist coming up to them and going “man do i have a fucked up story i want to follow” they really do let that person go wild. i’ve mentioned the way the ronan farrow one really moved me emotionally and that’s just because ronan knows how to investigate and tell a story to get you righteously angry for who it is he’s defending. he’s good at his job!
but this one, quiet on the set, has genuinely made my jaw drop a few times, even if i think some of the framing could have been better in the last episode. of course i know about all the rumors about dan schneider and the abuse on set, it’s hard to have been into the teen nick scene and not notice, and it’s pretty easy to figure out which kids were being harmed through too much attention and which were being harmed through not enough attention, and there’s been all sorts of rumors floating around for over a decade!
but the build up to the drake bell reveal was well handled, i thought. i was initially skeptical because i think it’s hard to make a documentary about child sexual abuse without leaning into being exploitative in some way. and at first, where you have the actors who left early, like katrina, or who you remember but weren’t mega famous like giovannie, and they’re all saying “this set was so weird & inappropriate, i knew something was wrong but i didn’t have the experience or vocabulary to say what” it feels a little too schlocky. like, oh we’re just kind of speculating on the inappropriate nature of dan’s “friendship” with amanda bynes for two episodes? yeah it is fucked up that two pedophiles were on that set, but did they hurt anyone on set?
and then drake bell walks into the room dressed like timmy turner and says it was me. he hurt me.
i can’t stop thinking about the choice of clothes here and the way it helps drive home the point of the doc. he’s sitting there in fairly odd parents colors as an adult and can’t describe the sexual trauma he experienced as a child still, has never spoken about it, had his mom lie to his father over it because he was so screwed up. really driving home the point that he was just a kid who had a knack for physical comedy and it got him preyed on by dan, a man who should have protected him, set up and handed over to a monster who traumatized him for months and years.
but when that reporter said she got a judge to let them unseal the court documents because drake bell told her how much support peck had? my jaw dropped, like yeah this is reporting, this is someone who saw this story and finally fucking cared not about the salacious details but about who knew what and why they did nothing to stop this from happening. it’s not about forcing drake bell or katrina jackson or alexa to live through the worst moments of their life - it’s about how so many people knew what was going on and didn’t do a god damn thing to stop it. it’s about how these monsters, these convicted pedophiles, were given access to little kids to hurt and traumatize and everyone knew and didn’t just look the other way, they actively helped cover it up. THATS the story. Not that it was an isolated tragedy but that it was a clinical, purposeful environment built by people who wanted to harm little kids.

so i talked about Din being so ungodly unpredictable, and after digging a bit deeper beneath the surface of The Mandalorian season1 and 2, i think now i know why.
To the surprise of absolutely noone, Din Djarin is a rogue!! He's a rogue character, that's the foundation of his personality, at any point of his characterization he's designed to stray from structure and to undermine it.
But he's also a knight! and this introduces a very intriguing and fascinating conflict at the heart of his character: the duality of honor, and how he orients himself towards that specific value. He's a knight and a knight is bound by honor and servitude; but in order to save his honor he has to choose what and whom he serves at different points of the narrative, and he has to disobey in order to obide by his honor. A rogue character by definition is the least honoring person, a knight is most honorable. So the heart and the lungs of Din Djarin's characterization is his struggle with servitude and where his values lie, and it's never "this" or "that"; he's constantly switching between rogue and knight in the bat of eyelash, just when you think he's bound to code he abandons mission and when he's supposed to stray he stays and binds himself to a child.
I think introducing him in the position of a king is the most outrageous and hilarious plot twist, because narrative wise, all three archetypes of the Rogue, the Knight and the King have in common the conflict of honor, while the King is most bound to obedience and the Rogue is least concerned with it. So i'm actually quite curious now to know where they'll take season 3 Din Djarin, simply because this is such hefty faceted dynamic and it's quite frankly very ambitious to tackle, we haven't had an archetypal story this intricate in star wars since, well, the original trilogy.

C.S.Lewis: the obsessive desire to be grown up and the love of worldly things because they make us feel good often takes us away from the faith we ought to have. Innocence should be treasured and revered, not cast aside in order to make us feel superior.
Hollywood where children are systematically traumatized while having their innocence ripped from t and materialistic self absorption is the norm: we should make another Narnia movie

Top Gun Country Dancing AU! Part 3
PREV || NEXT
AMERICA'S NEXT TOP SWINGER
*a glimpse of how each of the class of 86’ dances with Maverick w/ bonus Rooster*
Goose style: Has the most knowledge when it comes to Country Swing, though Ice is close behind and closing fast. Has a full shelf of 1st place ribbons and trophies to back it up. A combination of tricks and spins. Lots of weird funky tricks. Tries to show off Mav's ability to defy gravity as much as possible. Many moves fighter pilot based ...somehow. Very Unorthodox.
Tumblr media
Ice: The best at performing aerial flips and shoulder tricks out of the boys. Was not satisfied with just being Top Gun (and Mav's top). He also NEEDED to be Top Swinger. Has a binder full of research complete with pictures, notations, and sheet protectors that he is not ashamed to show off (Mav finds it adorable that his hubby put in so much effort). Only the best for his tiny rebel.
Tumblr media
Slider Style: Also unorthodox, but 1000x more fueled with testosterone and yelling (bellowing?)......roaring, definitely roaring. Honestly, no one can tell if it's an intimation tactic or if he just has an addiction. Wields Mav like he's a lightsaber, and he's a Sith Lord. Yes, Officer, He is armed and is dangerous. So whenever he and Mav make their way to the dance floor, stay out of the splash zone. B/c Shamu's going ballistic.
Tumblr media
Wolfman Style: Has the most sensual dance style. A lot of hip movement, dear god there's so much hip. Have the time, Mav's thighs are just around his waist. His style raises the most wolf whistles (which he makes sure does not go anywhere, and the man who did it knows he will be mauled without hesitation). Somehow, his signature hat never falls off while dancing, the guys are convinced he's got an invisible string that ties it under his chin.
Tumblr media
Hollywood Style: Very flashy, loves to showboat, he didn't get the callsign "Hollywood" for nothing. Every dance is a movie premiere, and the reviews are in..... it's a 10/10 would watch it again. Loves to dip and lift Mav up so he can strike a pose. Every time, the poses are picture perfect every damn time, and Goose has the polaroids to prove it. Definitely has a giant frame picture front and center on the living room wall of his and Wolf's house. Every time their daughters bring a new friend over, they are so confused cause that's their dad, but who the hell is the other guy. And without missing a beat, without looking at the photos, the girls are just like, "Oh, that's just dad and Mav." Who the hell is Mav????
Tumblr media
Sundown Style: has the most tempered style, does the occasional dips, spins, and flips, but prefers dipping and handholding spins. Dances for the sake of just dancing. To Ice's exasperation, some people confuse Sundown for Mav's husband, given that every time they dance they have huge smiles on their faces and talk the entire time. People think it makes Ice jealous but he's not. He knows that just Sundown's style.
Tumblr media
Chipper Style: Treats country dancing like ballroom dancing. Has previous experience in said style and applies it to Country swing with the precision of a naval aviator. A complete gentleman. Also does ballroom dancing with Mav after Mav asks him to teach him. It's so wholesome and suave, that you can't help but swoon.
Tumblr media
Merlin Style: If Chipper and Sundown are both wholesome, Merlin and Mav are just adorable. When they dance, it's like they've somehow turned paddy-cake into dancing. Merlin is the twirl n' spin master. He's so good at it that it's honestly terrifying. Man, he's just here for that good time, fun time.
Tumblr media
BONUS:
Baby Goose with his cousins (Hollywood and Wolf's daughters)
Tumblr media
Rooster and Mavdad :
Tumblr media
Rooster cuts loose, footloose, and makes sure to kick off his Sunday shoes. When he dances, every part of his body moves somehow independently from each other but in perfect harmony. Lots of arm waving, lots of kicks, and especially lots of hips. When he and Mav dance, they feed off each other's energy and tear the dance floor a new asshole. Unlike his uncles and Icedad, he just does a two-step with all the expected swings and turns with Mav.

Why did Bojack Horseman fans brag so much about the show handling mental illness better than 13 Reasons Why? That's like trying to sell people on your favorite restaurant by saying "it's way better than that place that got closed down after three people died from eating contaminated fish tacos." Uh, I sure hope so!

That Heart Li Ming ‘kiss’ was cute, in a very stage kiss way. It’s clear there wasn’t any actual kissing between them, but the camera angles helped to sell it.
