For the bodypart canons askgame can we get Neuvillette? If you don't have much about him yet then I wanna be the first one to ask for Kaeya
I already did for Neuvi! In fact its easier for him bc he just came out, so i have a lot of things to extrapolate from, but I was writing long ass essays for kaeya for more than a year, so its harder to come up with anything new to say asdfghj. like i don't to repeat same headcanons i already wrote, like that he's related to candace
Headcanon: I can muster a cogent argument for why it would make more sense or make for a better story if this were the case
i've gotta say, i'm a bit peeved when i see ppl portraying child kaeya as like. a dickensian beggar boy who was let to the fireplace and cried bc he tried a cube of sugar for the first time in his life. like, alberichs are nobility and we know khaenriah took their nobility *very* seriously. and if they knew they are sending their scion to mond's nobility, they'd make damn sure he can keep up their dignity. kaeya canonically could read and write before he got to mond and game makes sure to highlight that his handwriting is beautiful.
i think kaeya was very well educated, very well schooled and mannered and prepared for like high society politics, and it was kind of a cultural shock for him how uncivilized ragnyvdirs are in comparison to his own upbringing. like he's a bit confused when he doesn't see 10 different forks at the dinner table, but he's keeping a brave face, but then he sees diluc wipe his mouth with a sleeve and like snatch a piece of meat from the dish and is just completely stunned. and diluc is like oh don't be shy, you can have more too if you want!, but kaeya is in fact seeing a heart attack his own father would have at this scene. this is why he comes off as very quiet and polite to all adults at the estate
Heartcanon: I don’t have a particular rationale for why this ought to be the case, I just like to imagine it’s true because it gives me the warm fuzzies
my conspiracy theory headcanon is that he does still have his horse, but doesn't use her for work. like when he just became a knight as a teen, he saw a horse that no one wanted or ever chose bc she had horrible temper, and slowly gained her trust with treats and attention until they've became friends like a true horsegirl would. that horse was left in mond bc she doesn't let anyone else ride her, so the expedition just left her to kaeya, but he just treats her like a luxury pet and spoils her to death
Gutcanon: it’s not that I actively want this to be the case – it just unaccountably feels like it should be
the first ability from his vision that ever activated was his C4 shield when diluc cleaved him on the head and this is what saved his life. this shield is v useful, but kaeya hates it as a reminder. he also has pretty big burnscar on his eye, bc like. he took a flaming claymore to the eye, no way he has a dainty little white line from a hit like that
Junkcanon: I like to imagine it’s true because it gives me the other kind of warm fuzzies
has a collection of corsets and elaborate lingerie sets. like, you open the corset on his default outfit and there is another, even sexier corset underneath
Spleencanon: I insist that this is the case specifically to spite the author, because, like, fuck you, sir or madam
every time hoyo tries to gaslight us into pretending diluc was right and in fact normal about kaeya and the knights the whole time, i'm sending psychic spiders to them on the astral plane

What comes after neoliberalism?
Tumblr media
In his American Prospect editorial, “What Comes After Neoliberalism?”, Robert Kuttner declares “we’ve just about won the battle of ideas. Reality has been a helpful ally…Neoliberalism has been a splendid success for the top 1 percent, and an abject failure for everyone else”:
https://prospect.org/economy/2023-03-28-what-comes-after-neoliberalism/
If you’d like an essay-formatted version of this post to read or share, here’s a link to it on pluralistic.net, my surveillance-free, ad-free, tracker-free blog:
https://pluralistic.net/2023/03/28/imagine-a-horse/#perfectly-spherical-cows-of-uniform-density-on-a-frictionless-plane
Kuttner’s op-ed is a report on the Hewlett Foundation’s recent “New Common Sense” event, where Kuttner was relieved to learn that the idea that “the economy would thrive if government just got out of the way has been demolished by the events of the past three decades.”
We can call this neoliberalism, but another word for it is economism: the belief that politics are a messy, irrational business that should be sidelined in favor of a technocratic management by a certain kind of economist — the kind of economist who uses mathematical models to demonstrate the best way to do anything:
https://pluralistic.net/2022/10/27/economism/#what-would-i-do-if-i-were-a-horse
These are the economists whose process Ely Devons famously described thus: “If economists wished to study the horse, they wouldn’t go and look at horses. They’d sit in their studies and say to themselves, ‘What would I do if I were a horse?’”
Those economists — or, if you prefer, economismists — are still around, of course, pronouncing that the “new common sense” is nonsense, and they have the models to prove it. For example, if you’re cheering on the idea of “reshoring” key industries like semiconductors and solar panels, these economismists want you to know that you’ve been sadly misled:
https://foreignpolicy.com/2023/03/24/economy-trade-united-states-china-industry-manufacturing-supply-chains-biden/
Indeed, you’re “doomed to fail”:
https://www.piie.com/blogs/trade-and-investment-policy-watch/high-taxpayer-cost-saving-us-jobs-through-made-america
Why? Because onshoring is “inefficient.” Other countries, you see, have cheaper labor, weaker environmental controls, lower taxes, and the other necessities of “innovation,” and so onshored goods will be more expensive and thus worse.
Parts of this position are indeed inarguable. If you define “efficiency” as “lower prices,” then it doesn’t make sense to produce anything in America, or, indeed, any country where there are taxes, environmental regulations or labor protections. Greater efficiencies are to be had in places where children can be maimed in heavy machinery and the water and land poisoned for a millions years.
In economism, this line of reasoning is a cardinal sin — the sin of caring about distributional outcomes. According to economism, the most important factor isn’t how much of the pie you’re getting, but how big the pie is.
That’s the kind of reasoning that allows economismists to declare the entertainment industry of the past 40 years to be a success. We increased the individual property rights of creators by expanding copyright law so it lasts longer, covers more works, has higher statutory damages and requires less evidence to get a payout:
https://chokepointcapitalism.com/
At the same time, we weakened antitrust law and stripped away limits on abusive contractual clauses, which let (for example) three companies acquire 70% of all the sound recording copyrights in existence, whose duration is effectively infinite (the market for sound recordings older than 90 is immeasurably small).
This allowed the Big Three labels to force Spotify to take them on as co-owners, whereupon they demanded lower royalties for the artists in their catalog, to reduce Spotify’s costs and make it more valuable, which meant more billions when it IPOed:
https://pluralistic.net/2022/09/12/streaming-doesnt-pay/#stunt-publishing
Monopoly also means that all those expanded copyrights we gave to creators are immediately bargained away as a condition of passing through Big Content’s chokepoints — giving artists the right to control sampling is just a slightly delayed way of giving labels the right to control sampling, and charge artists for the samples they use:
https://doctorow.medium.com/united-we-stand-61e16ec707e2
(In the same way that giving creators the right to decide who can train a “Generative AI” with their work will simply transfer that right to the oligopolists who have the means, motive and opportunity to stop paying artists by training models on their output:)
https://pluralistic.net/2023/02/09/ai-monkeys-paw/#bullied-schoolkids
After 40 years of deregulation, union busting, and consolidation, the entertainment industry as a whole is larger and more profitable than ever — and the share of those profits accruing to creative workers is smaller, both in real terms and proportionally, and it’s continuing to fall.
Economismists think that you’re stupid if you care about this, though. If you’re keeping score on “free markets” based on who gets how much money, or how much inequality they produce, you’re committing the sin of caring about “distributional effects.”
Smart economismists care about the size of the pie, not who gets which slice. Unsurprisingly, the greatest advocates for economism are the people to whom this philosophy allocates the biggest slices. It’s easy not to care about distributional effects when your slice of the pie is growing.
Economism is a philosophy grounded in “efficiency” — and in the philosophical sleight-of-hand that pretends that there is an objective metric called “efficiency” that everyone can agree with. If you disagree with economismists about their definition of “efficiency” then you’re doing “politics” and can be safely ignored.
The “efficiency” of economism is defined by very simple metrics, like whether prices are going down. If Walmart can force wage-cuts on its suppliers to bring you cheaper food, that’s “efficient.” It works well.
But it fails very, very badly. The high cost of low prices includes the political dislocation of downwardly mobile farmers and ag workers, which is a classic precursor to fascist uprisings. More prosaically, if your wages fall faster than prices, then you are experiencing a net price increase.
The failure modes of this efficiency are endless, and we keep smashing into them in ghastly and brutal ways, which goes a long way to explaining the “new commons sense” Kuttner mentions (“Reality has been a helpful ally.”) For example, offshoring high-tech manufacturing to distant lands works well, but fails in the face of covid lockdowns:
https://locusmag.com/2020/07/cory-doctorow-full-employment/
Allowing all the world’s shipping to be gathered into the hands of three cartels is “efficient” right up to the point where they self-regulate their way into “efficient” ships that get stuck in the Suez canal:
https://pluralistic.net/2021/03/29/efficient-markets-hypothesis/#too-big-to-sail
It’s easy to improve efficiency if you don’t care about how a system fails. I can improve the fuel-efficiency of every airplane in the sky right now: just have them drop their landing gear. It’ll work brilliantly, but you don’t want to be around when it starts to fail, brother.
The most glaring failure of “efficiency” is the climate emergency, where the relative ease of extracting and burning hydrocarbons was pursued irrespective of the incredible costs this imposes on the world and our species. For years, economism’s position was that we shouldn’t worry about the fact that we were all trapped in a bus barreling full speed for a cliff, because technology would inevitably figure out how to build wings for the bus before we reached the cliff’s edge:
https://locusmag.com/2022/07/cory-doctorow-the-swerve/
Today, many economismists will grudgingly admit that putting wings on the bus isn’t quite a solved problem, but they still firmly reject the idea of directly regulating the bus, because a swerve might cause it to roll and someone (in the first class seats) might break a leg.
Instead, they insist that the problem is that markets “mispriced” carbon. But as Kuttner points out: “It wasn’t just impersonal markets that priced carbon wrong. It was politically powerful executives who further enriched themselves by blocking a green transition decades ago when climate risks and self-reinforcing negative externalities were already well known.”
If you do economics without doing politics, you’re just imagining a perfectly spherical cow on a frictionless plane — it’s a cute way to model things, but it’s got limited real-world applicability. Yes, politics are squishy and hard to model, but that doesn’t mean you can just incinerate them and do math on the dubious quantitative residue:
https://locusmag.com/2021/05/cory-doctorow-qualia/
As Kuttner writes, the problem of ignoring “distributional” questions in the fossil fuel market is how “financial executives who further enriched themselves by creating toxic securities [used] political allies in both parties to block salutary regulation.”
Deep down, economismists know that “neoliberalism is not about impersonal market forces. It’s about power.” That’s why they’re so invested in the idea that — as Margaret Thatcher endlessly repeated — “there is no alternative”:
https://pluralistic.net/2021/11/08/tina-v-tapas/#its-pronounced-tape-ass
Inevitabilism is a cheap rhetorical trick. “There is no alternative” is a demand disguised as a truth. It really means “Stop trying to think of an alternative.”
But the human race is blessed with a boundless imagination, one that can escape the prison of economism and its insistence that we only care about how things work and ignore how they fail. Today, the world is turning towards electrification, a project of unimaginable ambition and scale that, nevertheless, we are actively imagining.
As Robin Sloan put it, “Skeptics of solar feasibility pantomime a kind of technical realism, but I think the really technical people are like, oh, we’re going to rip out and replace the plumbing of human life on this planet? Right, I remember that from last time. Let’s gooo!”
https://www.robinsloan.com/newsletters/room-for-everybody/
Sloan is citing Deb Chachra, “Every place in the world has sun, wind, waves, flowing water, and warmth or coolness below ground, in some combination. Renewable energy sources are a step up, not a step down; instead of scarce, expensive, and polluting, they have the potential to be abundant, cheap, and globally distributed”:
https://tinyletter.com/metafoundry/letters/metafoundry-75-resilience-abundance-decentralization
The new common sense is, at core, a profound liberation of the imagination. It rejects the dogma that says that building public goods is a mystic art lost along with the secrets of the pyramids. We built national parks, Medicare, Medicaid, the public education system, public libraries — bold and ambitious national infrastructure programs.
We did that through democratically accountable, muscular states that weren’t afraid to act. These states understood that the more national capacity the state produced, the more things it could do, by directing that national capacity in times of great urgency. Self-sufficiency isn’t a mere fearful retreat from the world stage — it’s an insurance policy for an uncertain future.
Kuttner closes his editorial by asking what we call whatever we do next. “Post-neoliberalism” is pretty thin gruel. Personally, I like “pluralism” (but I’m biased).
Have you ever wanted to say thank you for these posts? Here's how you can do that: I'm kickstarting the audiobook for my next novel, a post-cyberpunk anti-finance finance thriller about Silicon Valley scams called Red Team Blues. Amazon's Audible refuses to carry my audiobooks because they're DRM free, but crowdfunding makes them possible.

so me and hyacinth were reading through the comments on the Horse-Themed Gender Reveal Party post, which is kind of a wild ride because it's just absolutely full of the most insane rationalizations of cishet gender nonsense and a truly baffling lack of reading comprehension, but one thing stood out to me so much that i NEED to write a post about it. i need to write about economics now. i'm sorry but my whole body is vibrating. i haven't utilized my mathematics/game theory degree in SO LONG you have to understand. ok here we go
so among the various comments defending the extravagant Horse-Themed Gender Reveal Party, there were quite a few comments along these lines:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
i think these arguments are extremely interesting because they are, in my opinion, wrong... but subtly wrong, which is the most interesting way to be wrong. i don't really care about the comments that are like "well i don't know what cis means and anyway gay people do stuff like this too" because that means nothing. but these arguments about economics? they're legit interesting. let's unpack!
so the core argument, in all these cases, can be paraphrased as follows:
"Even if wealthy people are spending money on something lavish and extravagant and ridiculous and pointless, they're creating jobs, they're allowing poorer people to do work and get paid, right? So this is a good thing, ultimately."
and i think this is an excellent time to introduce to you the concept of opportunity cost and the window fallacy.
what is opportunity cost? well - to put it simply, it's the cost of a transaction that results from missing out on the "opportunity" to do something else. in more precise terms: in a situation where you must choose between several mutually exclusive alternatives, it's the value of the best alternative you didn't choose.
here's an example: suppose i spend $5 on a nice coffee. the straightforward way to analyze the result of this transaction would be to say: i lost $5, i gained a cup of coffee, so my "return" on this investment is whatever i deem the coffee to be worth. maybe it's a really, really nice coffee, in fact so yummus that it tastes like $7. then i basically walked away with $2 more "value" than i had before! wahoo!
what goes unseen in this scenario is the opportunity cost of everything else i could have done with those $5. i had other options, after all: i could have spent it on a pastry instead, or some fruit and vegetables, or maybe i could have put it in my savings account and earned a barely perceptible amount of interest on it, or i could have given it to a friend. every single one of those options is now lost to me, since the $5 is spent: i have missed out on the opportunity to do these things. thus, the "cost" of my coffee transaction isn't just the cost involved in getting the coffee itself; it's also the cost of closing off every other opportunity i had. maybe, if i'd bought some lovely pastries with my $5, they would have been so delicious as to taste like $10. then i actually missed out on $3 of value by buying the coffee instead!
opportunity cost is a pretty simple concept to understand, but easy to overlook, because it is inherently "unseen"; these are all the things that didn't happen, after all, so it's impossible to account for every single possibility here.
now, let's use this concept to address a very interesting logical fallacy in economics: the window fallacy.
the window fallacy was first described by economist Frédéric Bastiat, in his appropriately named essay That Which We See and That Which We Do Not See. in it, he uses the concept of opportunity cost to address the question: does society benefit from wanton destruction, from wasteful actions? he provides the following example (paraphrasing):
suppose someone accidentally smashes my window, and a bystander says to me: "well, it's not so bad, at least this creates jobs for all the glaziers, right? if we never broke any windows there'd be no work for the people whose job it is to repair windows!"
and there's a logic to this claim, certainly. this unfortunate accident has brought some profit to the glazier who eventually comes to fix my window; suppose they get paid $100 to repair it. then the act of destroying the window has brought $100 into the glassmaker's business! wahoo for them!
but it would, obviously, be insane and fallacious to suggest that going around breaking windows on purpose is "good for the economy". what goes unseen in this equation is the opportunity cost of fixing the broken window. if i have to spend $100 on having my window repaired, then i am not spending that money on things like food, healthcare, rent and bills - or, for that matter, going to some other business and spending my money there. the cost of the broken window includes all the things that i now cannot do with my $100 that i otherwise would have done.
what Bastiat illustrates with his example is that we cannot simply argue that an action benefits society because it "creates jobs"; we must also look at all the missed opportunities, all the things that could be happening if that job was never needed.
and this leads us back, after a somewhat circuitous journey, to the Horse-Themed Gender Reveal Party. is it true that luxurious, extravagant displays of wealth like these create jobs for gardeners, caterers, waitstaff, et cetera? yes, it certainly is! but let's also ask ourselves what the opportunity cost is of such things. every dollar the wealthy elite spends on a lavish party is one that isn't spent on other things: on someone's healthcare or rent, on infrastructure, on research, on education. every hour a cleaner spends picking up blue or pink confetti, whether they get paid or not, is an hour they're not spending doing something else: studying, relaxing at home, reading a book, or, you know, getting paid to clean somewhere else.
now, there's obviously a line to be drawn somewhere here, because frivolous things are not valueless. it wouldn't do to advocate for an economy where nobody ever does anything frivolous. if i were to suggest that throwing parties is always bad because that money could be spent on philanthropy or something, then you should rightly bonk me with a stick and then discuss consequentialist moral philosophy with me. (after that we could maybe start making out, angrily.)
but, once someone reaches a certain level of wealth, you really have to ask yourself what the opportunity cost is of garish Horse-Themed Gender Reveal parties. if an ordinary person hosts a wedding and invites some friends and family and buys a nice dress and rents a fancy restaurant, then you could probably meaningfully argue that the joy this brings into people's lives - getting to live in a world where weddings happen every once in a while - is worth the cost, is worth the missed opportunities. a life where nobody parties would be pretty dull. but wealth, true wealth in excess, is always built on someone else's back.
there were probably some chefs, brewers and florists who got paid handsomely for this spectacle. just don't forget about all that which goes unseen.

Soooo I'm back and i wrote an essay:
Chapter 10
I love the Scooby Doo gang a lot. How Namjoon is eager to learn and help. Also the fact that it brings them together without too many fights 😂
The brewery scene was hot and unexpected. I'm saying unexpected because i kinda hoped she'd go over to the waiter and everyone will be Uhm Ma'am sit yo ass down. But i liked it nonetheless with killer teddy bear being all mrrr. Also, Hobi and miss gorl Alice i see you and you need to either get to it and make us super jealous or nothing at all😭
The surprises for Namjoon and Jimin were so sweet they warmed my heart. The lengths she'll go for them is unimaginable. Like she could've just been like yep there you go a house and food do your thing, but no, she has a big heart.
Now the 3 events. Liked Hobi's, but I'm a lot more inclined towards Yoongi's and Tae's. The fact that be only has eyes for her my love🥹 I want one pls! And then Tae's i get on another level. As an artist myself, i tend to paint people i love a lot, to get the appreciation back is absolutely ecstatic. Also very touchy touchy sir i see you too👀
And then the cliffhanger, bad Dana. Very bad.
Chapter 11
I need to know how the fight went down between them 3. Like air, Dana, I'm telling you! Poor Hobi, he probably thought he's getting kicked out 🥺
Kookie kookie kookie, you are more smitten than we thought you were. Hiding it under the I needed to scent, oh Jin will be a pain. Shut up you lil bastard 😏
And the scenting? I was so giddy...give us more pretty please ☺️
WE HAVE MORE HORSES! Are we also getting a y/n ride scene? It doesn't have to be a horse tho 👀
OMG good job Hannah! Oh i'm happy she is getting a better life. Can't wait to meet her. 🤭🫢😧😐😒Scrap that! Hannah is competition.
Oop jumpscare! Yoongi baby you are wearing JK's personality and that doesn't suit you.
Oh babies🥺🥺🥺
Oh what? Question mark? The bar is...what? Very cryptic. Ok.. Yoongi you locked the door you didn't make the room soundproof. Did they talk about sharing her between themselves? Cuz I'd like to read that as well 😏
Ooop like a sack of potatoes. Uuuuu, are we ever honna see y/n extra super drunk like at that bar?
NOOOO FUCK! YOU ARE SO EVIL WOMAN WHYYYYY?😭😭😭😭
Hiii love nice to hear from you again!! Hope you're well, I can't wait to discuss your thoughts about the last two chapters with you! 💞💞
Chapter Ten -
fdsjfdsjf the Scooby Doo gang I love that!!! MC, Joonie, and Jeongguk make quite the little paranormal investigation squad, I'm definitely looking forward to writing some more adventures the trio will go on with their ghostbusting interests. AHH and the brewery scene was so fun, they hybrids getting to go out and have a good time with MC and Alice was really exciting for me to write. I did play with the idea of MC flirting with the waiter as well, but in the end I wanted to display some of Taehyung's growing possessiveness. Besides-- MC definitely has her hands full with the seven of them! As for Hoseok and Alice *evil laughter* 💀 there are some plot lines that I have planned surrounding those two... we're just going to have to wait and see how it pans out (and how MC will react to it!!!)
MC is just ahhh I want her to adopt me fhdksf like her gift giving skills are unmatched. She really wants all of the hybrids to feel at home and like they have their own belongings, spaces, etc. that make their lives more happy and comfortable. She really really cares for them all 🥺
Hehehe the three events~ for Hoseok's track meet, it was a sort of supportive bestie vibe, whereas Yoongi's and Tae's had a bit more of a romantic feel to them. Tae.. my goodness he probably sees MC as his muse or something, because she's the one who encouraged her to participating in the photography club in the first place. I hope he continues to take pics of her and make friends in the club, as well. He's such a sweet boy, he definitely could use some buddies.
rjGFJDGHD BAD DANA!! I can't help myself with the cliffhangers hehe I'm sorry love!!! 🤭
Chapter Eleven -
So the little spat between Hoseok and Jeongguk... We've seen Hoseok's sort of jokester personality, and I really think he wasn't trying to start anything, but with Jeongguk already on edge needing to scent her again, things got a little heated between those two. Joon, not wanting to upset MC like he had during The Incident (with Tae), played the part of peacemaker, which I think shows how willing he is to change and grow for MC. I think you're right, Hoseok was probably entertaining the idea that MC would be angry enough at him to "kick him out", but MC would never. 😭
AHH and Jeongguk. What a tease!!! I definitely think that he is starting to grow more fond of MC, even though he is a bit reluctant to show it. For some reason, too, he seems to sense how fond Seokjin is of MC, so often brings up his own concern for MC and covers it up by blaming Seokjin hehe....
I do plan on having some horseback riding scenes!! Of course, with our cowboy Jimin, maybe we'll get to see him teach MC how to ride also I see what you did there wink wonk ;)
Hannah!! Good news for her, good news for Seokjin, but MC is already feeling a little jealous. I wonder how things will go down when MC takes Seokjin to meet up with Hannah...
Yoongi being a little impatient and brisk with MC made me upset, too, especially since he's always been one of the softer ones with her. That's probably why MC could sense something was wrong. As for them talking about sharing her, that's certainly a drabble idea, but also, I'm toying with the idea of having it sort of an unspoken agreement between all of the hybrids... we'll see how I decide in the future!!!
SO! When I finally get around to all of the prequels, I plan on having that scene with MC at the bar with Yoongi. Something to look forward to in the future-- his prequel, Fire, Walk with Me. ❤️‍🔥
fjkdszkjfzsjd SORRY FOR BEING EVIL!!! But also thank you for sending me all of your lovely thoughts. Sending you hugs, bestie!! 😘

MFA program interview tomorrow (it's almost 4am now so technically today but shh)
honestly. i think i’m more nervous about what will happen if i'm accepted this time than the interview itself. the interview... i've been through it once, & my interviewing skills are good if i say so myself. but idk until last wednesday i had more or less accepted the idea that an mfa wasn't meant for me in this lifetime. i still WANTED it but i accepted that i might not get it— who do i get rec letters from 2, 5, 10 years down the line, when i’ve likely been just in the workforce and not a community that could speak to my art & study skills? what do i put in my portfolio if i’m too disabled to get out & find studios & make the art i’d want to create a graduate thesis out of?
but now i've got this opportunity and like. yeah you can be cynical about it & say they're filling a quota or maybe this is their M/O every year to bait more applicants & inflate numbers… but idk i’m trying to stop those suspicious, paranoid thoughts because they’re based in insecurity & hurt.
when a dept. head emails me the day before the deadline and says 'we were looking at past applicants and invite you to apply again; just reuse your previous application' and they offer me an interview the day after i send that and a few new materials, i need to think ‘yeah there's something in my art that they want. that the world wants.’ i do make good art, art that does what i need it to do. and i have worked SO hard. i know what i’m doing and what i want.
plus i got waitlisted last time so i was this close 🤏 i’m not going to be cocky but it sounds like a have a good chance this time. i think about how i got into RISD for undergrad i just couldn’t afford it. i got into RISD! one of THE most illustrious art schools in the damn country! only about 17-19% acceptance rate!!! my portfolio was good enough for that!!!!!
so if given this opportunity i will seize it because i have to. i will be grinding myself to dust while i’m there, i’m sure. i’m still spent from the last 4 years, but i am a fighter and i will claw my way through with torn nails and broken teeth if i need to. i’d rather do that right now while the iron is not exactly hot but still workable rather than wait for a nebulous “someday” or never get it at all. if i get it done now, school can be completely totally DONE for me. there’s nothing above a masters for fine art.
and i feel really good about giving this second chance at this MFA program everything i’ve got, without over analyzing or second guessing because my gf has given me a really stable life and we have a whole plan of where we wanna be for the next few years at least. i have a job too! a pretty ideal one for someone like me!! there is a LIFE waiting for me if i get rejected. i’m not hinging on this for student loans to live on and a reprieve from work that was making me suicidal.
but like. yeah i’ve been having a cart before the horse thing. i'm really scared of the idea of 2 more years of study while being away from a more permanent home precisely because we are so ready & prepared for stability and being somewhere that’s not temporary. i don’t wanna be in transition anymore! i want a home and a place to rest!! i want to stay in therapy! i want to go to doctors and fix my body!
but if i need to, i will.
opportunities have always been stolen from me, by circumstance & finances, having no support. i’ve never been in control of my life. i want to capture this one if it lays down in front of me. i really do deserve it.
and tbh i think it will be somewhat easier because it is just art and some TA stuf. undergrad was agonizing because i was trying to put together senior projects and manage portfolios while also having to fucking write busywork 1-2 page essays every week in each of my other classes and writing manuscripts and being the one to manage group project email chains and scheduling because the 18-20 year old students don’t like to just get shit done. i don’t want to say i’m better than students who went to art colleges but i am built different LOL

I'd be interested to hear your thoughts on an abra line review, if you feel like discussing it!
(You ask that like I'm not ready to launch into a 600 page essay on this line at any given second)
Tumblr media
Abra is one of the cutest Pokemon out there to me, though granted I might be slightly biased. I think part of it is that it's not overly human-like; it's very much just a very sleepy baby animal, and that's adorable.
Design-wise, normally I'd say it's a bit too close to Kadabra for its own good. The hands, markings, head, etc. are all different, but it's still pretty similar, especially when you see it stand up:
Tumblr media
However, what saves it is how it works conceptually. Instead of just acting like a mini Kadabra, it instead is a perpetual sleepyhead that subconsciously teleports if it senses trouble. That, in and of itself, is an excellent concept for a psychic-type, and gives it a very distinct feeling from the rest of the line along with a unique catching mechanic.
Also, I really like the reason why it sleeps all the time:
Tumblr media
The whole line, in general, has this thing going on where they're like psychic horses and die if you look at them wrong, both stat-wise and lore wise (Abra's abilities put a strain on its mind, Kadabra gets headaches, Alakazam needs to hold its head up with its kinesis then all of its muscles atrophy when it mega evolves...), so this works really well with that theme and provides a logical reason for why its asleep most of the time.
Tumblr media
Kadabra is my all time favorite Pokemon. 10000/10 everyone else go home we're done here
Okay no but seriously, there really is nothing about Kadabra that I don't love. It's some kind of kaiju with an insect-like body, a fox head, and a giant fat gecko tail for good measure. It uncontrollably fucks up its environment just by existing. One of its dex entries is a Kafka reference. Incredible.
Design-wise, one interesting tidbit about Kadabra is that it was actually designed first and the rest of the line came way later, judging by production data (and ranked #25 in the initial early popularity polls they did, good for it). You can kind of tell looking at it, as Abra and especially Alakazam are just kind of extensions of Kadabra with less elements on them. Considering how good the overall line is it makes me wonder if they should start more lines by creating the middle evo first.
I also really like the markings. They're based off of Zener cards, which are supposed to be used to detect ESP in people.
Tumblr media
Not only do they look really cool (and serve a practical purpose; according to the 'dex, they're used to store energy for evolution), but it's a nice way to hint at the magician theme the line has while not being as literal as the spoons.
Speaking of the spoons, I know some don't like them (and I get why), but I actually think they work pretty well. They help communicate the magician theme, they serve a practical purpose (they enhance and focus their psychic powers), and it's explained how they get them (they make them using their abilities). There's actually a surprising amount of thought put into them, and Kadabra is often posed or animated to be focusing on the spoons.
Tumblr media
In all fairness though, I might as well nitpick the design a little. The crotch squiggles are... well, I just used the term "crotch squiggles". You need them there to make the Zener card motif clear, but they might've been better off on the back or something. Also, not sure what the purpose of the plate is there either; a more pointed waist piece like Alakazam has probably would've made more sense. That's it, though, and those are just things that could objectively be improved, not things that bother me personally.
Tumblr media
As you can probably guess from Kadabra being my all-time fav, I don't like Alakazam's design as much. But that's not to say it's bad--I would actually change very little about it, aside from maybe keeping the markings--and it does an excellent job of looking like a more powerful, more mature Kadabra.
The main thing with Alakazam is that it becomes noticeably more humanoid, not only losing the giant tail (a crime, really), but also just in terms of proportions. I totally get why most people would prefer this, but I love how Kadabra is like a weird blend of 17 different animals, and you don't get that as much as Alakazam.
Actually, if there was something else I'd change aside from just adding markings, it would be to make it look a bit more like the old art:
Tumblr media
Alakazam's original artwork gave off a completely different Vibe(TM). The head was considerably bigger in proportion to the body, reflecting the 'dex mentioning it needing kinesis to hold its own head up, and it was always hunched over, arms almost dragging on the ground. It really look like something that could blow up your brain with a thought.
Also, some parts of the design just don't look as good as they do on Kadabra. The longer mustache/whiskers don't feel nearly as natural as Kadabra's, the feet are a weird chunky shape instead of the bird feet Abra and Kadabra have, and even the way it's constantly clutching two spoons feels a bit weird. It doesn't really use them as a focus like Kadabra does, they're just kind of there all the time, and it just feels a bit awkward to me. Also, what happened to the claws on its hands?
However, I love the 'dex entries about its high intelligence (once again, giving each stage of the line something unique), the purple expanding to give it a pair of bracers and knee pads, etc. So it's still pretty great in my book; just not as great as its pre-evo.
Tumblr media
I do like mega Alakazam's design quite a bit, and I want to disclaim that because I need to rant about the forehead gem for a second: WHY DOES IT HAVE A FOREHEAD GEM. So many psychic-types have forehead gems, the Abra line was one of the few that didn't, so why turn around and give them one?? But it's especially weird because many megas incorporate elements from the pre-evos, and Kadabra already has a forehead marking. Just use the plus sign or square from the Zener card markings, that would've been perfect and fit with the line more thematically!!
Though on the plus side, the 'dex describes that not as a gem but as an "organ", and the thought of that being soft and filled with blood is certainly weird enough to get it a few points back in my book:
Tumblr media
Anyway, foreheads aside, I do like the design quite a bit, maybe even more than regular Alakazam. A lot of megas just feel like the base Pokemon but More(TM), so M. Alakazam does a really good job at advancing things in a way that feel purposeful. The way the head now forms a star, the way Alakazam's bracers extend to form robe-like "sleeves", the mustache becoming a full beard, ect. Even the way it transitions from magician to guru kind of makes sense, given that the 'dex talks about how spiritual the line is (though I do prefer the magician angle, just because it's a really unique angle; we already have a few other meditative guru-like Pokemon after all). Not to mention how the muscle atrophy fits with the line's frailness, with a torso so small you could wrap your hands around it.
I also really like how the spoons are handled here. Not only increasing the amount from two to five to show how much stronger it is than its base form, but also levitating them above itself, which feels much more natural than Alakazam constantly clutching them in both its fists. Also, minor thing, but I like how the feet perfectly lock together as well.
I think my sole complaint, outside of the gem, is that I would've liked to see the beard be more yellow and gradient into a white, just because having it all be white feels a hair overpowering (pun not intended but I'll take it). Other than that, it's solid.
So overall, an excellent line. I have few issues outside of a couple nitpicky complaints. Kadabra's still the best though (in my heart).

REVIEW, Part 1: The Prince of Egypt (1998)
Disclaimer: This was written in April of 2021, but couldn't continue due to Tumblr's image limit. They only allowed 10 per post, but now it's 30! Still too little for my review though, so I need to do this in parts. Link for Part 2 is placed at the end of this post.
I saw one of Josh Keefe's video here on Tumblr. It looked promising so I got curious and watched it. That led me to his other videos, and I came across his video essay for The Prince of Egypt. I’ll put the link here so you could check it out.
I’ve always loved this movie. Due to some films and series I’ve seen the past couple of months, I have this new way of appreciating filmmaking. Since it’s on Netflix and it’s holy week anyway, I decided to watch it again.
The movie opens with this:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
We see clouds in the sky. The clouds go away gradually to show the sun. Suddenly, Pharaoh's big statue head drops in the shot. The symbolisms here and how they're shown are remarkable. In ancient Egyptian religion, Ra is god of the sun and creator god, and it was thought that Pharaohs are depiction of Ra. When the people, the Hebrews, are revealed to be pulling this huge block of stone, we immediately see slavery and how the ruler of Egypt is making their lives miserable.
Under the heat of the sun, which I think is also a symbolism of how the Pharaoh is above the Israelites, we hear the Israelites' prayer to God. We'll see more of how Egyptians are always above the Hebrews.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This particular scene where the Egyptian guard cuts in exactly right after showing Pharaoh's statue head is brilliant.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
By the end of the song, a woman is shown holding a baby. Egyptian guards are running in the background, while the woman is singing,
“Son, I have nothing I can give but this chance that you may live.”
According to the Bible, there was a directive from the king to throw every newborn Hebrew boy into the river. Then, the scene changed into a reddish hue.
Tumblr media
Jochebed, Moses’ mother, threw him off the river. Even with his sister Miriam watching over him, whatever happens to Moses now is beyond their control. There’s no assurance that he would survive. What are the odds that the Egyptian princess would find him? What are the odds that she’s not as evil as her people? What are the odds that she would accept a random Hebrew baby in the royal family? Jochebed’s faith challenging the odds should be lauded, and the goodness of the Egyptian princess should be recognized, too. Women!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Moses, now in the arms of princess, is carried into the palace.
Pay attention to the lyrics of the song in this scene.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Next, we see Ramses and Moses, all grown up, riding a horse carriage. There are hieroglyphs around them, but they seem undisturbed by it.
Ramses takes a good look at that one particular hieroglyph where an Egyptian is also riding a horse carriage. He's pleased, as if saying to himself that he’s on the right track. Moses saw this, and tried to joke about it, but Ramses answered candidly.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The brothers are reprimanded for the ruckus they caused that day. Consider the spaces and lines that separate the characters, the Pharaoh from his sons, particularly Ramses.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The second still above in particular, is right after Pharaoh saying, “I’m building an empire.” In the background is the view of the land, and on the king’s side, his statue head overlooking the city.
Tumblr media
After Ramses left the throne room, Moses pleaded their case to the Pharaoh. Again, be aware of the spaces. They’re now partitioned separately, but notice that Moses is closer to the throne. He managed to cross the metaphorical line between them, without any objection from the Pharaoh.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
He is seen reaching out to him, breaking the barrier. We’ll later find out that the king listened to Moses’ suggestion to approve of Ramses, which further drives the point.
The whole case of Ramses as a weak successor and Moses as a supportive brother almost made me think they are a loving, blue-blooded family. We see here how the Egyptians are so far in viewing the oppression they’re committing to the Hebrew people.
The king required them to attend a banquet where Ramses is going to be appointed as crown regent. He is offered a gift by the high priests: a woman from a faraway land. However, she’s feisty and fights back when the princes try to ridicule her. Moses played the game right, or so he thought. When he gazed at his mother, thinking she’d approve of the mockery, he saw her shake her head in disappointment. (Again, women!)
Ramses gave Moses his ring as he appointed his brother as royal chief architect. He now has an actual place in the palace, not just a brother to the crown prince.
Moses pursued the woman they mocked earlier, and found out she was able to escape. He could’ve used his privilege as prince to imprison her again, but for some reason, he used that to her advantage instead.
Moses let her get out of the palace, and followed her to the streets. He’s pleased with what he did.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Even the dialogues from this movie are written beautifully. This exchange is cleverly worded, knowing that the Pharaoh is considered god in Egypt. Miriam’s answer can be interpreted as either he's supposed to ask God or his alleged adoptive father of his origins.
Miriam: Our mother set you adrift in a basket to save your life!
Young Moses: Save my life? From who?
Miriam: Ask the man that you call "Father."
He didn’t take offense earlier when he’s called an “arrogant pampered palace brat”, maybe because he knows it’s actually true? Maybe because no matter how rude he seems to be, the important thing is he’s still royal in her statement? We saw how a place in aristocracy gives him validation. Miriam’s declaration of him being an illegitimate Egyptian is no forgiving matter.
This is possibly my only negative remark on this movie: The part where Miriam sings a lullaby is not explained well. It wasn’t stated in the film but, in the Bible, the princess hired Jochebed to take care of Moses. He probably remembered that lullaby.
Another brilliant visual! A mirror of earlier close-up with Jochebed:
Tumblr media
Moses runs back to the palace, trying to convince himself that “this is all he ever wanted,” but he’s dissatisfied with it.
An illustration of what transpired that day was laid out next using hieroglyphs. This may just be a dream or an illusion, but this is the first time that we witness Moses acknowledging them. I think he has always known the hieroglyphs are telling him the ugly truth, but chooses to ignore. After waking up to that nightmare, he runs off to the drawings on the wall.
We've seen this earlier. There’s that familiar person pointing at something, but it was limited and shown from Ramses’ perspective. Moses chose to see the big picture. He’s perfectly placed here, too, with him lined up with the newborns. The truth is: He could've been one of them.
Tumblr media
I wonder if the Pharaoh knew he’s a Hebrew. Didn’t his father wonder if Moses would rebel one day? We see the king trying to comfort him. Moses discovers he’s well aware of his vile ways.
“Sometimes, for the greater good, sacrifices must be made.”
Moses, after hearing this, felt horror at the thought that the sacrifices his father meant were innocent children (to which he belonged). The sentence below was said in a very comforting father tone.
Tumblr media
Young Moses: Why did you choose me?
Queen Taya: We didn't, Moses. The gods did. This is your home, my son, here the river brought you, and it's here the river meant to be your home. Now you know the truth, love. Now forget and be content, when the gods send you a blessing, you don't ask why it was sent.
Horrible words uttered as a song is worse because they sound comforting and beautiful to hear. Despite this, Moses was still able to spot the errancy.
...continued here in Part 2.

hmmmm not that i can think of rn...
7. A medium of art you don't work in but appreciate
watercolour !! i've tried it a few times and Struggled but i love seeing ppl's work in it

HEHE believe in your heart (confess with your lips) or OH GODDAMNIT for the ask game?
believe in your heart (confess with your lips) is the canon divergent tntduo healing fic that i never really figured out how to plot out but the idea was q and wilbur become friends and foster a healthy rivalry and work through their issues as a byproduct and i was trying to figure out an in character reason for them to move into a house together? big fan of sticking two guys inside a building. something abt shared space and living together and support systems. this is pretty old (last edited september 24, 2021) but i still kind of want to write this when i figure out how to. plans for this were always /platonic bc i believe in the power of tntduo friendship. needless to say i did not get to write too much of the actual fic but these were lines from a hypothetical conversation where they reflect on pogtopia and november 16:
“We were friends, right? At the end.” “Sure, yeah.” Wilbur’s gaze is distant. “Yeah.”
anyways the title is from Romans 10:9 by the Mountain Goats
OH GODDAMNIT is the beginnings of an essay about Wilbur and his parallels to uhhhh hector horse breaker. that guy from the iliad. i jokingly posted this on another site for my friends and went. hmm. maybe i could elaborate. and then i did a little bit but never finished it:
C Wilbur dies and takes his city down with him. This parallels the burial of Hektor by the Trojans which doubles as a funeral for the well-being of Troy. In this essay I will
i mean. i think i still could elaborate.

hi. at this point it may be evident what i'm about to say. but for that ask meme: ALL OF THE QUESTIONS
JHFDASK YESSSS okay here we go!!!
1. Art programs you have but don't use: Clip Studio Paint!! I pretty much ONLY use it for the grid and text feature, otherwise I don't like the workflow haha
2. Is it easier to draw someone facing left or right (or forward even): Drawing in profile is the same to me from either direction, but for 3/4 view, I naturally gravitate towards / find it easier to draw people facing left
3. What ideas come from when you were little: Since I've been into Aveyond for so long, and that's what I mostly draw, I have a lot of ideas that pretty much originated as "I wanted to draw this as a kid and didn't have the skill to"!
4. Fav character/subject that's a bitch to draw: Te'ijal and also Galahad. it's the hair.
5. Estimate of how much of your art you post online vs. the art you keep for yourself: Finished art I'd say I share a good 90% of it! Once we get into sketches... hoo boy, maybe 40%?
6. Anything that might inspire you subconsciously (i.e. this horse wasn't supposed to look like the Last Unicorn but I see it): Whatever this is, it's either too specific to the piece or too subconscious for me to think of it
7. A medium of art you don't work in but appreciate: traditional illustration, painting, watercolor...
8. What's an old project idea that you've lost interest in: A heads up that my answer to this is sad but I'm trying to talk about this type of stuff relatively openly, so: spring 2021, I watched Willy's Wonderland for the first time w/ Ishti + Moonie; we kept talking about a Galahad & Mel AU for it. I had two pictures for it planned, and I drew one of them, and... the timing worked out where Moonie never got to see it, and I've lost the motivation to do the second one. But I like the first one and I'm glad I drew it and I take some comfort/peace in the fact that I was working on something I was excited to share with her at the time.
9. What are your file name conventions: I have a folder for all my art, a subfolder for every year, and then a subfolder for every month, which means there isn't that much overlap! so unless I have a funny title idea my file name conventions are generally pretty straightforward: "mella1.sai", "teijalahad.sai", "teijalstudy.sai" etc etc
10. Favorite piece of clothing to draw: Does armor count? If not, gambesons.
11. Do you listen to anything while drawing? If so, what: Yes!!! Pretty much always music, occasionally video essays. Usually I'll pick a song and play it on loop, or if I'm in the mood for more variety I'll pick a playlist or an artist and listen through that. I also really like drawing while on call with people.
12. Easiest part of body to draw: I'm so sorry for my answer. Boobs.
13. A creator who you admire but whose work isn't your thing: I'm not sure I have an answer for this one, actually - there's a lot of artists I like the work of who I wouldn't want to emulate, but that feels different to me?
14. Any favorite motifs: Not really, in theory I really love flowers but I almost never draw them
15. *Where* do you draw (don't drop your ip address this just means do you doodle at a park or smth): I used to draw pretty much everywhere, but post chronic pain it's my desk only because using a tablet hurts wayyy less than a sketchbook!
16. Something you are good at but don't really have fun doing: Landscapes / natural areas from photographs lol
17. Do you eat/drink when drawing? if so, what: Water ALL the time, coffee if it lines up properly
18. An estimate of how much art supplies you've broken: Very few!! Probably less than 10. I mostly draw digitally
19. Favorite inanimate objects to draw (food, nature, etc.): ARMOR AND WEAPONS
20. Something everyone else finds hard to draw but you enjoy: Hands and armor!
21. Art styles nothing like your own but you like anyways: Honestly the art styles unlike mine that I like tend to be ones... I wish I had... I'm really drawn to realistic, somber, softer stuff
22. What physical exercises do you do before drawing, if any: Tendon gliding exercises! Tbh I should start doing more, it might help
23. Do you use different layer modes: VERY rarely, mostly not
24. Do your references include stock images: Yessss
25. Something your art has been compared to that you were NOT inspired by: I KNOW this has happened but I'm totally blanking on it
26. What's a piece that got a wildly different interpretation from what you intended: I'm not sure if this counts but pretty much any time I get a "cute!" response on a te'ijalahad picture I'm like oh no please do not say that,
27. Do you warm up before getting to the good stuff? If so, what is it you draw to warm up with: I tend to warm up by drawing a headshot of the character I'm going to be drawing, but lately I've been trying to shift to warm ups that are more focused on like, the action of drawing and loosening up
28. Any art events you have participated in the past (like zines): I participated in a zine that ended up not happening, and I've done several fandom exchanges!! Mostly the Aveyond Winter Exchange, but also the Oneshot Podcast Network exchange on AO3 (yeah it was AO3 but I did art for it)
29. Media you love, but doesn't inspire you artistically: Infinity Train!!! absolutely adore it, the art style doesn't really inspire me at all & because I got into it in the thick of my hand pain I never got used to drawing it
30. What piece of yours do you think is underrated: None! I mostly draw Aveyond so pretty much all of my art is in the 1-10 response zone so it all feels pretty consistent gdjkgklsdf

First and Last Lines
Fic meme: post the first and last lines of the last 10 fics you posted. WIPs are welcome. I'm going by AO3 update date, though some of these are very old fics. In this one, I'll be skipping two pieces that are not strictly "fic" - a fandom meta essay and a fansong.
The Land Before Sburb
First: From above, two beings observe a planet full of vibrant life.
Last: Meanwhile, the tiny descendants of dinosaurs curl up to sleep, content for now, in a slowly spinning world of Wind and Shade.
2. Guide to the Zodiac
First: The Prince of Hope, The Emperor, the Aquatic, The White, the White Philosopher, the Wrathful, One Who Leads to Rivers of Self-Knowledge, He Who is Evening and Morning, The Stormcrow, The Prince Who Sits Beside Worshipful Kings, Bearer of the Staff, The Thrice-formed Prince, the Adversary.
Last:  Rare is the one who escapes from this grip, but they are said to be richly rewarded for their efforts.
3. A Horse with No Name
First: Winter had fallen in the wood, the snow heavy and white.
Last: By sunrise, he was gone.
4. Crup of Hogwarts
First: Feeling eyes on his back, Harry turned to look over his shoulder.
Last: It struck him as strange and disconcerting that a wizard as wicked as Riddle would be kind to animals.
5. On the Formation and Occurance of Phantump in Paldea
First: The purpose of this journal is to chronicle my studies of a potentially undescribed phenomena preventing the formation of Phantump in Paldea.
Last:  Imagine that, a ghost reading about ghosts…
6. Into Thin Air
First: Your name is Roxy Lalonde, and you are about to break your employment contract.
Last: The next time you video chat, he's got a clown painting framed on his wall, plain as sober day.
7. How I Became Yours, Revised
First: The Iron Ostrich was not the fanciest nor the nicest of taverns the Earth Kingdom had to offer.
Last: Whether they would have regretted saving her was, by that time, a moot point.
8. The Last Earthbender
First: Fire. Air. Water. Earth.
Last: It is.
9. Avamorphs
First: I’m Sokka.
Last: I closed my lemur eyes, and saw Black.
10. Ill Wind
First: With the doors shut tight, the inner sanctuary of the Northern Air Temple was dark, and the air was thick and burning
Last: He thought of going back to the apartment, but decided he would rather sleep on the street.

Look, idk how important fortune cookies necessarily are in the grand scheme of everything. But. Things need to be said.
You know, it’s a good cookie, tastes good, fun shape, and fun thing inside. Good design all the way around and they have great personalities. I’m sure I’ve heard some people say that the messages inside are bad or whatever, but I personally don’t think they’re meant to be taken that seriously. Idk, to me whatever message inside is a nice thing to read usually. Sometimes they read more like poetry pieces and a lot of the times, they’re common sense things, neither of which are bad to hear too much. You can’t fit an essay in there, so don’t try. So I don’t really see why we need to be mad at them for being simplistic in bakery or literature. Simplistic is not bad in some cases, especially not in the case of the fortune cookie, where simplicity may be one of its greatest features. Simple packaging, simple but good cookie, simple but fun paper message. Simplicity can be a very strong and important feature, and no I did not hear this from a fortune cookie. And you know, the small rectangle of paper is taking on at least two huge tasks: imparting important knowledge and teaching you to speak a whole language. Give the cookie and it’s innards some slack, it’s not easy.
But for whatever criticism, you know at the end of it all there’s nothing really, inherently wrong with two lines, at most, of small poetry, common sense adages, or odd phrases, numbers, and an attempt to teach you a word or phrase from a language.
It’s like getting a letter from a friend. It’s like finding a message in a bottle. I’ll be honest. I have a jar of almost every fortune from a fortune cookie I’ve ever received. I collect the ones from my family too since they don’t care to keep them. I enjoy this jar of paper. I would say fortune cookies are always a pleasant experience. 10/10
Except this time.
You know if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it right? It’s already perfect, why mess with it? I just said that simplicity is one of its greatest features. The cookie is self reflective! Every adage that applies to you applies to it too! Why don’t you learn some self reflection too! Why are you trying to complicate perfectly fine things??? Why are you deliberately choosing to taint what’s good!? FORTUNE COOKIES ARE NOT YOUR TROJAN HORSES!!!!!!
On this great day today I ordered some food from a great local Chinese restaurant. The cookies were there. All is good. At the end of lunch, I pick one at random. Food tastes great. Cookie tastes great. Today is great.
Poker bitcoin ad.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Billboard signs up and down the yahoo roadways, ad and then ad and then ad on YouTube, pop up this pop up that on every website and I know “get adblocker”. I do have that. It doesn’t always work! Hey do you want to sign in? Are you sure? Are you sure you’re sure? You want to sign in? It doesn’t matter if adblock works sometimes, it’s the principle that’s the point! And I can’t adblock my eyeballs!
I know nothing about which company or companies actually makes the fortune cookies. But god. Can we have one thing without an ad. Can we have one simple thing that exists to simply be pleasant and provide a good experience without it being an ad?!? This particular cookie was good. It’s innards were foul. Was it worth it? Did they pay you good bitcoin poker money to put bitcoin poker ad inside??? Is it worth it???
The words were NOT poetry, NOT a nice adage, those words did NOT exist to be fun for the sake of fun. Those words existed for no other reason than to be an ADVERTISING SLOGAN for poker bitcoin. I never asked. Fuck you. I was neutral before, now I hate poker and bitcoin.
This was not a letter from a friend. It is not a message in a bottle. It a piece of junk mail in my mailbox! It is a call in my inbox about my car’s extended warranty!! IT IS UNBLOCKABLE SPAM!
So I finish eating the cookie. It was good. But I’m feeling odd and I’m like. Never seen this before. My whole jar of fortunes, with fortunes from me and my friends and family. Never seen that before. Feeling a bit down now. Feeling lied to. Feeling like a datapoint. Feeling like a demographic that a company wants. So I google it, and realize oh.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
????????????
Do we have to?? Just because online ads have changed doesn’t meant let’s litter the whole world offline with ads now??? Tiny billboard?? I hate big billboard, why would I like tiny billboard? Why just because it’s tiny and inside my food?? Am I nuts??
I, as a consumer, can tell you that I get things or services because I need or want them. I seek out product first, because I need or want it, then maybe I see ads because I’m shopping and then ad tracking happens. I DO NOT get product because product saught out me first! It doesn’t work like that!!
@companies who make fortune cookies, please for the love of god dont put ads in the fortune cookie, I’m not anti-company, I’m sure we can reason through this.
I’d rather an ad be on the outside packaging if needed, why it’s insides? Please what are you doing to the good heart of the fortune cookie?? Why??? Why does anyone think this is good???

General Update/Proof I'm Not Dead
Hello once again, and sorry (times 10^10000000000) once again! Life events plus family issues plus holidays, all of which involved a lot of traveling, kept me extremely busy, but now that things have settled down I think I owe everyone (anyone? are you out there?) an update of some kind!
Putting this under a cut because I have not yet decided to figure out how to stop talking so much haha, but tl;dr I'll be trying to get back on the writing horse (get it? because "writing" sounds like "riding"? eh? ...I'm sorry), I plan on releasing my voice line documentation project on June 10th this year, I have a FFXIV crossover project in the works, and I will also do my best to update this blog's Shulkelia content archive as well!
Writing-wise I unfortunately haven't made any progress on my drafts, but I do still have a very (**very**) huge backlog of ideas that I am ever wanting to bring to fruition: of course updating the collab fic (Darklions and I haven't talked for a while unfortunately as he's also been very busy, but rest assured even if he can't work on the fic I definitely can and will finish it myself if I have to!), a rewrite of my first attempt at a fanfic (maybe I should also post the original, as a way to see how much I've improved as a writer since then if at all?), and most of all a series of longfics that will be very dramatic and emotional and deep and most importantly will have titles based on some of my favorite songs I discovered in high school, so look forward to that sometime! Although maybe I'll first try getting one of my shorter and/or goofier ideas done just to practice getting back on track... which would you guys rather read first, a bit of ~intimacy~ from The Two Nerds or a comedic crackfic-I-only-call-a-crackfic-because-it's-wacky-but-I-take-it-wholeheartedly-seriously with the whole gang involved (including the Villain Squad and a little bit of Alvis too)?
Voice-line-project-wise I have slowed down on updating the actual document as I'm working on renaming the audio files in the drive to fully match their transcriptions so as to make them functionally searchable by their filenames (it's explained more in the actual doc haha), but two things of note:
1) I've been considering this for a while, and I've now decided I for sure would like to release it on this year's anniversary of Xenoblade 1, **June 10th**. This is partially for the sentiment of it, partially because there are still audio files missing in the only rip I can find and I'm holding out for the ripper to respond to my DM about finding the others (either themself or teaching me how to find them), partially because after the release of 3 (which I unfortunately still have yet to play!) I think 1's anniversary will be the best time for people to be talking about it and interested in it and therefore actually take a look at the thing I made haha, partially because I still have quite a bit of work left to do until it'll be in a state that perfectionist me would consider acceptable for others to see... and partially because I *may* have set the Google account for the project's birthday to the exact Japanese release date of 1 for fun, and so because the game is at the time of writing only 12 years old, the account is considered a minor's account which means it has restricted access to things (including Youtube. Every time I wanted to listen to music or a video essay I had to do it in an incognito window because my project account is blocked from Youtube outside of Youtube Kids lmao) and it affects what I want the document to look like (specifically with how hyperlinks work), meaning on June 10th both the game and the account will turn 13 and Google allows 13-year-olds to get their accounts upgraded to full accounts so I can finally be free of the curse on that day.
2) I've also been wondering for a while whether or not I should publish a link to it on here so that people can take a look before it's done and give me feedback (which I would very much appreciate!) The Title section is nowhere near finished in places but the vast majority of the thing is done and it feels weird just to keep it locked away like that haha. But also I know hardly anyone reads my blog anyway so it's not like it would matter all that much to share a link. Still, if anyone (anyone?????) out there is reading this, let me know if you want to see it and are willing to critique it!
Other-project-wise I've begun something else because I just cannot help myself haha. But it is Xenoblade-related! Specifically, it's a recreation of the full main cast using Final Fantasy XIV's character creator, down to combing through every piece of armor in the game to find which ones look the most like their clothing *and* are equippable by the jobs/classes I think suit each of them most, ***and*** designing characters based on what I think the XC cast would make if they made their own characters in the game! FFXIV is a wonderful game that is one of the main, *massive* monopolizers of my free time haha (especially since I decided in my insanity to level every combat job to 80, now 90, and I've also been doing high-end raiding with a static) and I love it for a lot of the same reasons I love XC, they just really feel like they go together! Not to mention the fact that *SO* many of XC's voice cast are in FFXIV (Shulk, Fiora, Dunban, Alvis, Egil, and even Colonel Vangarre and Maxis from FC are all in the game, usually voicing major characters!) and so many details in the job design fit with the playstyles of the XC cast, it just feels meant to be haha. Plus the fucking Allagan technology oh my GOD it literally looks fucking EXACTLY like the Monado down to the bright red color and computer chip lines, it is absolutely absurd, there is no way it's not a reference of some kind I refuse to believe otherwise. Pls Square make the next raid tier a XC crossover you know you want to everyone wants it even people who don't know what a Xenoblade is okay got it thank you in advance. So anyway, expect pics of that project to show up sometime in the future! (Oh and I also have had/developed a XC crossover idea for a different game over a very long time as well so I'll be working on thay sometime too but it's more involved since it'd be an actual mod/"dlc" that needs testing and balancing and new assets to be made and such I have too many ideas and not enough time it's a problem)
Oh and this blog! It's supposed to be an archive of Shulkelia content from other people! Yeah! Cool idea, maybe I should actually do that! In all seriousness, I do plan on archiving everything I have on here at some point (there's surprisingly quite a bit of stuff out there! I looked everywhere for hours searching every tag and every website every way I could! But that's absurd and no one should have to do that so that's why the blog is here!) so look forward to that as well!
So I think that's about it! Again I have no idea if anyone is reading this (if so I'm sorry I talk too much haha) but thank you as always for your patience with me, and keep on loving Shulkelia!
