DeForest Kelley, The Law and Jake Wade (1958)
Finally, finally found a version of this movie with better resolution. De plays Wexler, a beautiful himbo cowboy who is chronically in a very unhimbolike bad mood. In this scene, he’s P.O.’d because his buddy who left his gang months ago and didn’t even bother to write is now being captured and he’s going to have to go on a long, awkward horse ride with him to get some silly treasure.

The Law and Jake Wade, 1958, Is Playing on TCM on October 7 (USA)
The Law and Jake Wade, 1958 Is Playing on Turner Classic Movies on October 7 at 1 p.m. est. Was there ever a more suitable cowboy than Robert Taylor? I think not! Again Taylor plays the man with a hidden past, as he did in Undercurrent and Conspirator. This time he is a marshal in a small town, who owes his former companion, Clint Hollister, a menacing and dangerous man on the run, played…

Hi, I can request dad! neteyam x reader, where we kiss children very much and for a long time (as we do our pets, cats are cool) hehe
hii!! yes you cannn 🥰
i want to preface this by explaining what pillow kisses are:
pillow kisses are when the parent sits beside their child, grabs both sides of the pillow that their head is resting on, and lifts it up enough so they can kiss the child’s forehead, then gently places them back down. it is a repeated motion, for as many letters as there are in the child’s name, or how many years old they are, the parent can choose.
pillow kisses
⊱✿⊰ ⊱✿⊰ ⊱✿⊰ ⊱✿⊰ ⊱✿⊰ ⊱✿⊰ ⊱✿⊰ ⊱✿⊰ ⊱✿⊰ ⊱✿⊰
“txonuk! nima! come. time to get out of the water.” neteyam states, standing at the edge of the water with you, se’ayl, and tsantu.
neither of them move, still treading in the shoulder-deep water, giggling to themselves.
“we’re going make a quick stop to visit grandma and grandpa!” you say, trying to convince them to get out of the creek. jake and neytiri’s marui was on the way for you, and the children never missed an opportunity to see their grandparents.
nima gasps, but remains in the water, smiling to herself.
txonuk remains unphased, apart from treading in place.
“don’t make me come get you two.” neteyam says, in a slightly threatening tone.
keeping her lips just below the water, nima giggles, her laughter bubbling to the surface.
txonuk dares to even tread backwards, floating along the surface.
“very well.” neteyam wades into the water, disappearing below the surface.
nima squeals, frantically splashing now, looking around for her father in the water.
suddenly, txonuk screams, as neteyam resurfaces, grabbing and throwing him over his shoulder.
nima screams too, trying to swim away to the edge of the water, but neteyam scoops her up in his arms, walking both of them out of the water on his shoulders.
“daddy, downnn!” nima giggles, her laughter infectious.
“you had your chance, my mischievous children.” neteyam uses the hand supporting each child to begin tickling them, causing them both to erupt in a fit of laughter, squirming in your mates’ arms.
you take se’ayl and tsantu’s hands, as you walk the short distance to jake and neytiri’s marui.
swinging your childrens’ hands in yours, you approach the outside of your in-laws' humble abode.
“grandma!!” se’ayl shouts, letting go of your hand, running to her grandmother’s side.
neytiri turns, smiling as she crouches down to hold her arms out. “my sweet grandchildren, what a nice surprise.” she says warmly, kissing the top of se’ayl and tsantu’s heads, wrapping her arms around them.
“we went swimming at the creek!” tsantu says, happily.
neteyam sets both nima and txonuk down, who run to hug jake’s legs.
“the creek, huh?” jake asks, tousling txonuk’s hair and picking up nima.
“gwampa!!” nima squeals, wrapping her tiny arms around jake’s neck.
he chuckles, running his palm up and down her small back. “hi babygirl. look atcha, you’re gettin so big! ” he lightly tosses her in the air, which she loves.
“again, again!!” nima squeals, clapping her hands together.
“dad? momma?” txonuk questions, grabbing each of your hands, swinging them back and forth.
“yes, my son?” you both answer in sync.
“can we spend tomorrow with grandma and grandpa?” he asks, before yawning, rubbing a small fist against his eye.
you and your mate exchange a glance, before neteyam answers.
“i’m not sure, txonuk. grandma and grandpa are very busy, i-”
“of course they can.” neytiri cuts her son off, smiling at her grandchildren.
tsantu yawns, leaning his forehead against your leg. “mama, i’m sleepy.”
“this one’s gonna be out like a light any second.” jake chuckles, gently rubbing nima’s back, who’s eyes are struggling to stay open.
“we’d better get them home for a good nights sleep, then.” you smile and pick up tsantu gently, caressing the back of his head. you didn’t care that he was fully capable of walking himself, he was still your first born, and your baby.
neteyam takes nima from jake, gently removing her arms from around his neck.
kissing your in laws goodbye, you and neteyam lead your children home for the night.
entering your own marui, your children pile in, plopping on the mat where you all sleep, exhausted.
“mamaaa?” se’ayl yawns, grabbing her pillow.
“yes, my little love?” you say, kneeling to lay tsantu down.
“can you do pillow kisses tonight, please?”
you smile down at your daughter, tucking baby hairs behind her ear. “of course i can.”
“me tooo! i want kisses too!!” txonuk says, grabbing his own pillow.
neteyam settles beside you, his tail tickling your lower back. grabbing both sides of txonuk’s pillow, he raises his son’s forehead to his lips.
“t *kiss* x *kiss* o *kiss* n *kiss* u *kiss* k.” *kiss*
txonuk giggles the entire time, and neteyam joins, finding his son’s laughter contagious.
“goodnight, my little warrior. i love you.”
“night, dad. love you” txonuk yawns, closing his eyes.
you raise se’ayl’s pillow up, gently pressing your lips to her forehead.
“s *kiss* e *kiss* a *kiss* y *kiss* l.” *kiss*
se’ayl smiles, resting her hand on your cheek as she yawns, saying
“goodnight, mama. thank you for the pillow kisses.”
“goodnight, my little flower. i love you”
“love you.” she mumbles, half asleep.
moving to sit beside tsantu, you repeat the process.
“t *kiss* s *kiss* a *kiss* n *kiss* t *kiss* u.” *kiss*
tsantu raises his hands to your face then, pressing his lips to your forehead.
“goodnight, mama. i love you.”
“goodnight, my little warrior. i love you more.”
neteyam gently raises nima’s pillow up, as she’s already asleep, quietly whispering
“n *kiss* i *kiss* m *kiss* a.” *kiss*
and gently sets her back down, rubbing his thumb against her cheek.
“goodnight my little flower, i love you. sweet dreams.”
finally, settling in for the night, you lay down next to your mate, trailing your fingers down his chest to his hip bone, and back up.
you lean over then, placing a plump kiss to his lips. he reaches up, cupping your cheek as he quickly deepens the kiss. before it grows to anything too intense, he pulls away, smirking before whispering “i can’t wait to have you all to myself tomorrow.”
“mmmmm. g’night. i love you.” you mumble against his chest, as the sound of his heartbeat slowly lulls you to sleep.
“goodnight, my love. i love you more.” he wraps his arms around you, before drifting off to sleep himself.

CHAPTER 2
Jake x Neytiri x Na’vi!Reader
Summary: One other mate was enough, but two? Unneeded. ___ was the outcast, the unwanted woman. Jake and Neytiri wouldn’t ever see her..right? Warnings: Angst, Injury, Mentions of non-con/Abandonment, Pregnancy Word count: 1.5k

___ awoke gradually, the soft breeze of the morning flowing through her braided hair. The creatures of Pandora were awake and chirping, singing their songs and melody’s to the lone Na’vi under the tree of souls.
The woman opened her eyes, she was still curled up beneath the sacred fauna, it’s long tendrils dropping down softly onto her skin. The grass beneath her glowed a soft bright blue, almost unseen due to the sun, but since she was so close she could make out the little flecks of colour.
___ sat up slowly, wincing at the pain in her body. Her ears dropped as she recalled the events of the previous night, Jake and Neytiri must have left her there, since she could not see or smell them in the area. She felt disgusted in her own skin. ‘I need to clean myself’
It was painful getting up onto her feet, her bones ached. But with Na’vi bodies it would not be long before they set into place again. She limped away from the place and towards the forest, now that it was day, hopefully it would be easier finding her way back to Hellsgate. If not she will call her ikran.
It did not take long for her to reach a clearing, a large waterfall rushed with life towards the right of her. She sighed and untied her tweng, letting it fall to the ground, doing the same for her top. She felt Jake’s spend from last night leak down her legs and whimpered, ears turned down. This was not how she expected her first mating to go.
___ dipped her foot into the water and after deeming it cool enough she stepped inside. Wading towards the waterfall and undoing her braids, throwing the beads towards her clothes. Hoping to find them later.
She grabbed different leaves and flowers on the way, standing under the fall and letting the water run down her body. She crushed the flowers and leaves, getting them wet and using them to clean her body, paying close attention to the dark marks on her lower back, hips, shoulders and arm.
She was sure the clan would be worried for her. Seeing her coming back alone and in such a state, or maybe they will not care, too busy getting used to their new home and leader.
She just hoped that she could go back in peace, not wanting any attention on her.
Tumblr media
“What happened to you child” Mo’at questioned as she rubbed ointments into the purple bruising of ___’s delicate skin. The Tsahìk was confused as to why Neytiri and Jake showed up much earlier in the morning, without ___.
But when the missing woman showed up, braids undone and hair wet, body splotched in patches of darkness, the Tsahìk grew angry.
“It is nothing Mo’at”
“It is clearly not nothing. You are in pain ‘evenge” she stopped her ministrations and brushed the dark locks of hair away from her daughter in laws face, tucking it behind a pointed ear “you are my child now. I will look after you, but I can not help if you refuse to tell me”
___ felt her eyes water, memories rushing back quickly. Ones she refused to acknowledge all morning and kept hidden away. The Tsahìk noticed this and cooed, smooching her head and humming in comfort. Mo’at was always like a second mother to her growing up, being close friends with Sylwanin was what brought them closer.
“I- I cannot say. I do not want to” she weeped quietly, tears rolling down her flushed cheeks, shame coating her very being. The woman coddling her nodded, she would tell her in her own time. But for now the young lady needed to be comforted, whatever happened has shaken her.
Mo’at had a fleeting suspicion it was due to her daughter and son in law. No one else in the clan noticed them come back without ___, but she did.
A Tsahìk sees all.
Once ___’s cries died down and reduced to small sniffles, Mo’at informed her of the children she cared for, they were asking for her. Instantly the young woman’s ears perked, worried they have been alone for too long. The elder chuckled and urged her to go find them, knowing it would brighten everyone’s spirits.
Tumblr media
“Tsmuke!!” a group of small Na’vi rushed up to her and collided with her legs, nuzzling into the blue skin. ___ chuckled and patted their heads, bending down to give kisses to each of their heads.
“Tsmuke! Tsmuke! Can I braid your hair?” One of the girls, Tsìkì asked her. Already thinking of the beads that she would put in, blue, green, brown, round and jagged. The little one practically bounced at the idea.
“Of course ‘evi” ___ held her hand out and got dragged to sit down by the unlit bonfire, Tsìkì gathering materials to place in her hair while the other children proceeded to chat and tell her stories of their morning.
“Tsmuke!” at the call of her title she turned around, seeing little Sray running towards them on quick feet, weaving between Na’vi legs and jumping over logs. “Zafpe says you are mated now!” the boy in mention choked on the fruit he was eating, not expecting to be brought into the limelight. ___ froze also, mind wandering off to her unfortunate night.
“Srane Sray. But we should not talk about that”
“Lumpe?”
“Because I want to hear about your new lessons”
Instantly all the children brightened up, mouths running with all the new things they have learnt with the humans. Eventually having little competitions between them on who was better at English, ___ laughed at them, all the while having her mating ritual at the back of her mind. Looming over the depts of her thoughts.
Tumblr media
“We should tell her. Neytiri” Jake put his hand on top of her shoulder, watching as his wife was sat on the edge of their home, sharpening her knife.
“Why should we? She will find out with everyone else”
“Taweyka ngeyä sa’nok lu keftxo” Jake reasoned, not wanting to face Mo’at’s wrath of anger. He agreed that ___ could listen to the news with the rest of the clan, but it was better to let her know now rather than later.
Neytiri stood up and walked towards her bow, grabbing it and prepared to go hunting, looking towards Jake. “Fine, I will let her know. For the sake of my mother” she then walked out of the pod, climbing down the tree to find her old friend.
Jake just sighed and rubbed his temples, thinking back to earlier when Mo’at stared him down like she knew something he didn’t, like he was hiding something and she was figuring him out. It was unnerving, he’s only seen her look at him once, when hometree was destroyed and they found out his plans of betrayal to the Omaticaya.
He sat down on the edge of the hut and watched as Neytiri dragged ___ away from the children surrounding her, bringing her to somewhere with privacy.
Tumblr media
“I am with child” Neytiri stated curtly, expression blank as she faced her supposed ‘mate’ “I have been since the war” she then turned her head up and looked towards their home where Jake was sat on the edge, watching them from much higher up.
“Oh, congratulations Neytiri” ___ did not know what to say, it was bound to happen sooner or later. The war was a few weeks ago and she knew they have mated not that long before that.
Soon ___ would have a child of her own child too, but it would take a few weeks to tell, the Na’vi process of pregnancy was long. It was one that she would usually be excited for but with her situation she was dreading the time it would come.
Neytiri looked towards ___’s own flat stomach, then her eyes made contact with hers “we are not going to be responsible for yours. It is not ours to care for” she turned to walk off, having enough of conversation and wanting some peace, tonight they would all have to share a hut and the warrior was not happy.
All ___ could do is whimper, it is their child, no? Even if they did not love her that does not mean they should hate an innocent being. She held her hand on top of her tummy, praying to Eywa for her future babe to be blessed with a family who cares for them, one who will love them unconditionally. Even if she herself did not get any of that love in return. Her eyes watered at the thought, she may not get any happiness but she would risk everything for her child’s.
She was unaware of Jake’s eyes still on her figure.

Danny gave himself the kindness of keeping his phone off and out of sight during work, but it was never much of a problem considering the majority of his messages came from his family and Sam. However, when he slid his phone out of his work locker at the end of his shift, he was surprised to see his entire lock screen was filled to the brim with legions of texts and missed calls from Josh.
His anxiety piqued when he read the urgent nature of his texts, but calmed quickly when he realized they all had something to do with the twins’ fervent demands to help them track down Sam’s mystery girlfriend. Not even bothering to text back, Danny called Josh, pinning the phone to his ear with his shoulder as he kicked off his grass stained golf shoes and slid on his sneakers. As expected, Josh picked up on the second ring.
“Danny, my boy, finally, where have you been?” Josh greeted loudly.
“Work,” Danny deadpanned, tapping the heel of his shoe against the locker to secure it onto his foot. “The children yearn for the golf course. What’s the emergency this time around?”
“We have a breakthrough in the case,” Josh whispered conspiratorially and Danny felt a nervous tremor in his hand start to pulse. Their work on “the case” had been slim to none, mostly being carried out on a night when Danny slept over at Jake’s apartment and Josh had scrolled through Sam’s Instagram followers and pointed out “potential suspects” while they all passed his dab pen around. Needless to say, their sleuthing hadn’t reached any kind of important conclusions after the third pass around.
“Do tell,” Danny asked as he strode out the back doors and lumbered across the parking lot to his bulky Kia.
“Jacob managed to divine some very interesting information out of Sam,” Josh continued, clearly enjoying drawing out the suspense. “Apparently, he has some sort of ‘meeting’ tonight at Roscoe’s. A meeting? At night? At Roscoe’s? It’s gotta be a date.”
“Hm!” Danny squeaked, his keys falling through his fingers at Josh’s words. Danny was very aware of this dinnertime date, considering he was the one who was going to be in attendance. They’d only planned it a day or two before. How could Jake have gotten that information out of Sam so quickly? Danny pressed the speaker phone button and pulled up his text thread with Sam, smiling as he waded through an adorable stream of texts begging for Danny to come save him from lecture before zeroing in on a text that read ‘Just had Such a conversation with jake, ugh’. Uh oh.
“I mean, what else could it be?” Josh exclaimed, his voice filling the expanse of Danny’s car as Danny sat staring at his phone. “Sam’s smart but he’s not professional. Bullshit, it's a date.”
“Well, I could always ask him about it and report back,” Danny offered.
“Nope, I have something much better planned,” Josh announced, a smile dripping from his voice. “Pull out your fancy pants, Wagner, because the three of us have a reservation at Roscoe’s, 6pm tonight. This is a proper stakeout.”
“What?” Danny blurted, his panic returning swiftly. “No, no, Josh, I’m b-”
“Cancel whatever it was, this is top priority!” Josh insisted passionately. “Come on, it’ll be a blast. We have a table right outside the window so we can see every table inside. We’ll stay out of sight, sneak a peek at whoever shows up, and then we’ll know! It’s a foolproof plan!”
“Josh-”
“I won’t hear it,” Josh snapped. “We’ll pick you up at 5:45. Wear something nice. See you then!”
“No, Jo-”
“Yes, Josh, thank you for your kind offer,” Josh mocked in his best impression of Danny. “Oh, you’re so welcome, Daniel. And don’t try and tell Sam we’re coming, he texted Jake that his phone was dying half an hour ago and we all know he didn’t bring a charger to class. He’ll be out of commission until right around when we show up. It’s a perfect storm.”
“You watch too many movies,” Danny countered, his stomach sinking at Josh’s information. He glanced at his phone again and sure enough, his last text from Sam was an annoyed apology that his phone was dying and he’d text him if he had time to run home and grab a charger before he got to the restaurant.
“You don’t watch enough,” Josh accused with a laugh. “5:45. Fancy pants. Maybe bring sunglasses. Be there or be square!”
“You’re evil for this,” Danny sighed. “Alright. I’ll dig out my sunglasses.”
“Perfect! Au revoir.”
And just like that, the call cut and Danny was left sitting blankly and anxiously fidgeting. He thought about texting Sam anyways, but it seemed like a fruitless task knowing he wouldn’t see it until it was too late. Could he call someone Sam was with to warn him? Who was he even with? He didn’t know anyone’s numbers by heart, anyways. The stars had aligned in favor of Josh’s ridiculous stakeout, and Danny couldn’t help but feel the walls closing in around him as he started up the car and drove uncharacteristically slow all the way home. He knew this wouldn’t mean the end by any means, but his stomach was aching all the same.
~~
Danny spent his two hours of free time buzzing around his apartment and brainstorming ways out of the plan, but when he heard a horn blare outside of his window at the stroke of 5:45, he knew his fate was sealed. He ran down the stairs and walked out to Jake’s piece of crap Toyota, smoothing his semi formal button down with one hand and pushing his sunglasses up with the other. The backseat window rolled down and Josh’s cherubic face appeared, letting loose a loud wolf whistle. He was sporting a huge pair of bedazzled sunglasses of his own and a lavender fleece, and Danny chuckled as he climbed in the passenger seat and received a side hug from Jake, who was wearing his standard round sunglasses and a secret agent-esque turtleneck.
“You both look ridiculous,” Danny declared as Jake started to drive, turning around in his seat to properly face Josh. “I don’t know how you roped me into this.”
“I’m extremely charming,” Josh announced. Jake scoffed in reply.
“Is that what you call it?” Jake teased and it was Josh’s turn to scoff.
“Why are you in the backseat?” Danny asked, his nerves melting in the presence of his friends despite them being the source of it.
“He calls it ‘Driving Ms. Fernanda’,” Jake explained tiredly as Josh began to cackle. “He pretends I’m his chauffeur.”
“Are you Ms. Fernanda?” Danny questioned Josh.
“Elle Fernanda to you,” Josh declared in a confident impression of some kind of wizened socialite. “You didn’t come up with an alias for this?”
“Amateur,” Jake accused in a gravelly British accent.
“Oh, and you are…?”
“Oliver fuckin’ Reed!” Jake crowed, his face splitting into a raucous smile. “I have a beard for our grand entrance in my pocket. Didn’t want any ladies driving next to us to get distracted by how devilishly handsome I am with it on.”
Danny didn’t answer, simply laughing as he relaxed into his seat. For a moment, he forgot the end goal of this trip, taking time to enjoy the portal the twins always seemed to conjure up to transport his state of mind to a new plane of reality.
Before he got the time to fully indulge, Jake pulled into a parking spot around the corner from the restaurant and they all climbed out. As they walked, Josh quietly hummed the Mission Impossible theme and Jake chattered about the menu he’d looked up online, leaving Danny to try and get his panic under wraps.
“I’ve planned it all out,” Josh assured them. “Sam should already be inside, and we’ll just go right to our seats outside so he’ll never even see us. See, that table right there, by the bush? He’ll never see us from behind that.”
“Smart,” Danny answered absently. He checked his phone again, but there were still no texts from Sam. He fought cursing under his breath as they approached the hostess outside and she led them to the table Josh had described. As he took his seat, he peeked around the greenery and nearly jumped when he saw Sam sitting at a corner table, his chin resting on his hand as he looked around the restaurant. He’d been there for at least 15 minutes now, and Danny hoped he had kept up his streak of lateness so that he’d been sitting there for even less time, but from the frustrated crinkle on his forehead that Danny knew so well, he figured this may have been a rare occasion he’d actually showed up on time. Danny’s heart gave a pull as he stole another glance at Sam, recognizing the soft sweater he was wearing as one that he’d told Sam was his favorite. His mind was so overwhelmed with guilt it took him a minute to hear Josh in his ear.
“Dan!”
Danny jolted and turned to him.
“Can you see anything?” Jake asked, looking at him over the edge of his menu.
“Yeah, uh, straight shot actually,” Danny stammered. “Nobody’s with him, though.”
“Let me see,” Josh pestered, leaning over Danny to look into the main seating area. “Aw, there he is. Hi, little guy!”
“Imagine if he got stood up,” Jake joked, taking a sip of his water. “And we did all this for nothing.”
“That’s sad!” Josh lamented, but they both laughed. “We’d have to go in there and ambush him.”
“By the way, Dan, we picked an alter ego for you,” Jake said as Josh continued squinting through the glass at Sam, who had pulled out his phone and was trying to start it. Danny recognized this as a typical Sam maneuver for when his phone was dead, the explanation being that maybe he could “catch the phone by surprise” and trick it into starting up.
“Oh, really?” Danny answered curiously, trying to distract himself from the guilt now nearly choking him.
“You’re Chip Bunker, golf superstar,” Josh explained. “Just in case the waitress asks. If you need help beefing up your backstory, we’ll fill in for you. We need you to focus on keeping an eye on Sam.”
“Can do,” Danny answered honestly.
“Ugh, where would we be without you?” Josh gushed as the waitress started to approach. “Drinks are on me.”
An absolutely grueling 15 minutes passed, with Josh ordering a round of appetizers for them, Jake workshopping a list of discreet questions to ask Sam after, and Danny downing his entire cocktail while he watched Sam’s expression grow ever more frustrated.
“Oh!” Danny said, leaning in and patting the table to get their attention as he watched Sam shift in his seat. “He’s getting up!”
The twins awkwardly leaned around the bush obscuring their view as they all watched Sam get up and hail down a waitress, asking her something with her replying and hurrying away as Sam took his seat again.
“Is he leaving?” Jake asked in a hurried whisper.
“I don’t know,” Josh answered unhelpfully. “Oh, oh, here she comes.”
“Shit,” Danny blurted as he watched the waitress return to his side, a white iPhone charger in her hand as she passed it off to him and gestured to something out of sight. He watched Sam thank her and then bend to plug it into an outlet. They all waited in silence until they saw Sam’s face glow in the light of the phone starting up.
With a shaking hand, Danny tried to subtly slide his phone out of his pocket and turn his ringer off, but before he got the chance, his phone started buzzing with the Hozier song he’d assigned for Sam’s ringtone. The twins’ head snapped towards him and he had no time to move before they both saw Sam’s contact photo on Danny’s screen. His heart dropped like a cold weight into the pit of his stomach.
“Pick it up, pick it up!” Jake hissed, wiggling his fingers towards Danny’s phone as he and Josh slid down synchronously into their seats.
“Uh,” Danny faltered, his mind racing and his fingers beginning to shake as he tried to figure out what to do. In an instant, Josh’s hand darted out and accepted the call for him, and worse yet, pressed the speakerphone button. Danny felt the facade crashing down around him as Sam’s voice cut through.
“Where are you?” Sam whispered urgently, a sincere note of upset lacing his words. Jake and Josh stayed silent and still, their eyes slowly moving to Danny as he sat stupidly, all words dying on his tongue.
“Hello? Daniel?” Sam went on. “We were getting dinner tonight, right? I’ve been waiting for, like, half an hour for you. Are you okay?”
“I’m fine, Sammy,” Danny finally answered, his voice stuttering as the twins gave him confused looks and seemed to have an entire silent conversation of their own.
“Where are you?” Sam asked again, his words poisonous as he said every word punctually. “I can’t believe you forgot.”
Josh let out an involuntary scoff of surprise, clapping his hands over his mouth as Danny shot him a glare.
“What was that?” Sam asked. Danny could see him hunched over at his table, hurt beginning to taint his features as his free hand began to rip his napkin to shreds. “Are you with someone?”
“No, no, I mean, yes, but-”
“Okay, wow,” Sam spat, straightening in his chair again and scowling. “You made plans when we had plans? Aren’t you Mr. Calendar?”
“Sam, let me explain-”
“No, no, please, go on, I’d love to hear this,” Sam laughed tunelessly.
“I…” Danny trailed off, looking back at the twins, who were now looking at him with an expectant look of amusement. “Can you do something for me quick?”
“I will do jack shit, thank you very much.”
“Trust me?”
Sam was quiet for a minute, and Danny watched his gaze soften ever so slightly.
“Trust you.
“Can you look out the window for me?”
“What?”
“What?” Josh echoed, smacking Danny on the arm. “Come on!”
Sam’s brow crinkled again and he looked up from his glare fastened to the table and out the window, his eyes dancing over the scarce scenery until he finally made eye contact with Danny. Danny attempted a sheepish smile, but he was sure it came out as more of a guilty lip curl. Sam hung up the phone and got up from his table, stomping across the restaurant and towards the door.
“Traitor,” Jake declared.
“I have so many questions,” Josh whined, removing his sunglasses and rubbing his eyes as the door burst open and Sam approached their table. He reeled slightly when he caught sight of his brothers, sending Danny a furious and panicked look.
“What the fuck?” Sam asked simply, throwing his hands up in the air and letting them fall noisily against his pants. “What is going on?”
“I have no idea,” Danny answered honestly, his seat scraping as he attempted to get up but ended up sitting defeatedly again. “But everything is fine.”
“This was your meeting?” Jake blurted in confusion. “Dinner with Danny?”
“Yes?” Sam answered in petulant exasperation. “What the hell do you care? And why are you wearing a fake beard?”
“Well, we thought you were…” Josh’s voice got very small. “On a date.”
“So you’re stalking me now?” Sam asked, putting his hands on his hips. “Why is Danny here?”
“Clearly we didn’t know he was the one you were meeting!” Jake snapped. “Why wouldn’t you tell me who you were getting dinner with? We got all excited for nothing.”
“Why do I owe you that information?”
“Why didn’t you say something, Dan?” Josh pointed out, all of them turning to Danny, who felt heat flushing his face as all three brothers glared at him. Danny caught Sam’s eye, giving him a silent look of pleading and questioning. They were completely and utterly cornered.
“For the record, you barely let me get a word in,” Danny attempted to explain.
“What is happening?” Jake laughed, dragging a hand down his face. “Sam, we totally thought we were staking out your date. We know you have a girlfriend, okay, so we roped Danny into helping us figure out who it was, but-”
“I don’t have a girlfriend,” Sam cut him off. “We’re dating. There.”
He gestured towards Danny, who sat red faced and silent as Jake’s mouth gaped slightly in shock and Josh let out another shocked gasp.
“Now you understand my hesitancy about the stakeout,” Danny muttered sheepishly, beginning a nervous ramble as the twins visibly absorbed the new information. “I wanted to say something but I didn’t want to before Sam said something to you guys, so I tried to play along, but then Sam’s phone was dead and I couldn’t text him about what was going on and Sam, I am so sorry, I didn’t want to stand you up, but I didn’t want them to get suspicious and-”
“Ah, ah, ah, okay, stop,” Josh interjected, waving his hands around as Danny and Sam kept a tense eye contact, Danny pleading for forgiveness with his eyes as Sam’s glare slowly began to soften. “Why didn’t you guys tell us sooner?”
“What, you thought we’d be mad?” Jake laughed, pointing at Josh. “Remember how little negative response Josh got? Mom was like okay, cool, that’s awesome, we don’t care.”
“I know, I know,” Sam said, sinking into the empty fourth chair at their table, blushing uncomfortably. “It’s just…I love you guys, but you always make such a big deal about whatever I’m doing, and I just didn’t want it to be a big thing.”
“We’re not going to be, like, all PDA and insufferable,” Danny added on. Sam laughed in agreement and half of Danny’s tension melted at the sound.
Jake and Josh exchanged an extremely guilty look over the table.
“Sam, I’m so sorry,” Jake lamented, grasping Sam by the shoulder. “You know it’s because we love you and you’re our baby brother, but I’m sorry we made you so uncomfortable. You gotta tell us when we’re too much, man, you know we don’t know.”
“You can talk to me about stuff like this,” Josh offered, his voice gentle and genuine as he and Sam exchanged a knowing look. “About whatever you’re feeling that might, I don’t know, scare you. Even if it doesn’t scare you, talk to me anyway. I get it.”
“I know you get it,” Sam’s voice cracked, his face crumpling for a second before he scrubbed at his eyes with the sleeve of his sweater and let out a long contained breath. “I do. It’s just… it’s hard to introduce this whole new thing about myself without getting all anxious about what people might say. Even when I know it’s not a big deal, I know someone else might think it’s a big deal.”
“Fuck everybody else,” Josh exclaimed, grabbing Sam’s hand and squeezing it. “Seriously! Fuck ‘em. This is great news.”
“Sorry it came out like this,” Jake apologized again, grabbing Sam’s other hand and reaching across the table to grab one of Danny’s. “Let’s all pinky promise to keep each other totally in the loop from now on.”
With a quiet chorus of laughs, they all messily exchanged pinky promises.
“Are we allowed to ask questions?” Josh prodded carefully, and Sam rolled his eyes.
“Yes,” Sam agreed.
“But you only get three questions a piece.” Danny added on.
“That is way too many questions!” Sam argued, shooting Danny a much more good natured glare.
“No take backsies!” Josh insisted, rubbing his chin thoughtfully. “Hm. Who told who they liked each other first?”
“Also,” Jake interjected before either of them could answer. “When?”
“Well,” Danny started. “I technically did, at Sam’s birthday party. But Sam totally cornered me into doing it. You guys are good at doing that to me, so it seems.”
“I did not corner you!” Sam scoffed.
“Yes, you did! You were mega drunk and hinting at it.”
“At the party?” Josh let out a sigh of disappointment. “And we missed it?”
“Bummer, man,” Jake complained. “I’d pay to see that.”
“I don’t think you would,” Danny mumbled into a sip of his water, and Sam shot him another look as the twins groaned.
“Nevermind,” Josh gagged. “Okay, my second question is…how long did you each like the other person? Because I have guesses.”
“What do you mean, guesses?” Sam squeaked, his face flushing again.
“I want to hear this,” Danny laughed, suddenly self conscious of just how transparent he had been this whole time.
“I’d guess you, Danny, probably liked Sam since…middle school?” Josh guessed, and he hooted in triumph when Danny sighed and nodded shyly. “Boom! Okay, two for two, I’m guessing Sam liked you since high school.”
“Oh, fuck off,” Sam replied exasperatedly, which Josh took as another confirmation and held his hand up for a high five from any of them, but received not a single one.
“You guys weren’t all that subtle,” Jake powered on as Sam and Danny obscured their faces with embarrassed face palms. “I actually have no idea why we didn’t guess Danny as your potential beau sooner.”
“He didn’t even make Top 5,” Josh added. “We’re off our game, Jakey.”
“Indeed we are.”
“Well, this has been nice and all,” Sam began. “And by nice I mean emotionally tumultuous, but we did have something planned, so, Danny, do you…?”
“Yes, please, God,” Danny answered, getting to his feet and skirting around Josh to finally stand at Sam’s side.
“Hey, you said we got three questions!” Josh protested.
“I only asked one, what the fuck!” Jake argued in agreement.
“Text them to us, date crashers,” Sam stuck his tongue out childishly at them. “Or should I say ‘stalkers’? I’m including that detail when I call Mom, by the way.”
“Do not!”
“Boohoo.”
“Are you guys going to stick around?” Danny asked with an amused lift of his eyebrow.
“Well, I mean, we ordered appetizers and all,” Jake explained sheepishly, raising his glass of wine and shrugging. “Might as well.”
“It gives us more time to plot our next stake out,” Josh grinned, flicking his sunglasses back down to cover his eyes. “Elle Fernanda and Oliver Reed are a fantastic investigatory team, you know.”
“I-you know what, I don’t care,” Sam dismissed them, looking up at Danny. “Let’s go, yes?”
“Yes,” Danny confirmed. “I’m guessing you’re not keen on sticking around for dinner here.”
“Not even a little bit.”
“Can I tempt you with a frozen pizza and Psych?”
“Absolutely you can,” Sam grinned, looping his arm through Danny’s and tugging him back from the table. The twins immediately burst into a chorus of awes and endearing coos, and Sam shot them their own round of complaints as Danny waved goodbye.
~~
Once they were out of shouting distance, Sam let out a huff of air and leaned his head against Danny’s shoulder, causing them to stumble slightly as they walked. It was rare for them to not talk while on the move, but a few minutes of quiet passed between them until Danny finally spoke up.
“I should’ve texted you anyways,” Danny said. “I’m sorry.”
“Well, I should’ve had the brains to bring a charger,” Sam countered with a feline smile. “I’m sorry, too. It’s my fault for not telling them in the first place. We should’ve known this would end the way it did.”
“Yeah, maybe,” Danny chuckled. “I mean, now that they know, we only have to face our parents, and we’ll be lucky if they don’t hound us even more than them.”
“Ugh, God, you’re so right. My mom is going to flip. She likes you more than me, you know.”
“She adores you, Sam, come on.”
“I’m just saying don’t be surprised if she asks you to start being in our Christmas cards.”
“Oh, right, and you’d hate that,” Danny countered sarcastically.
“Totally,” Sam doubled down, his smile growing as he stared up into Danny’s eyes with the doe eyed look that made Danny nearly trip over his own feet as they approached Sam’s car. “Sorry my brothers are idiots.”
“They said it themselves, they just care,” Danny said, brushing a loose strand of hair out of Sam’s face as they stood in the warm dying light of the sunset. “Let’s cap the apologies for the night, okay? They’re idiots, we’re idiots, we know this.”
“Okay,” Sam replied quietly, looking nervous for a split second before speaking again. “Hey, uh, just, thank you.”
Danny frowned in confusion.
“For what?”
“Understanding,” Sam went on. “For not being, I don’t know, scared off by all the weirdness that follows me.”
“Sam, I’ve been there for every weird thing that’s ever happened to you,” Danny laughed. “If I was going to get scared off, that would’ve happened a long time ago.”
“I know, I know, it just means more to me now that we’re, you know…”
Sam smiled sheepishly and Danny felt like his heart was fit to burst in his chest from how much he loved him in that moment.
“I’m the lucky one, trust me,” Danny insisted, pinching Sam’s cheek endearingly.
“Ugh, gross,” Sam teased, batting his hand away and pulling out his keys, but Danny didn’t miss the smile Sam failed to squander as he fumbled with the lock button.
“You’re gross,” Danny countered, mimicking the open mouthed stank face Sam sent him in reply as he circled to the driver’s seat and unlocked the car. Danny piled his long limbs into his seat and watched Sam start up the car and pull up his address on his GPS, his heart fluttering in further endearment at Sam’s complete lack of direction. Without thinking, Danny plucked Sam’s phone from his hand and set it on the dash.
“Hey! What-”
Danny cut him off by grabbing Sam by the jaw and pulling him into a long kiss, both of them drawing it out by huffing excitedly through their noses and cupping the other's face until Danny finally pulled away. Sam watched him with starry eyes, a dumbstruck smile on his face as Danny returned the look and cupped Sam’s face in his hands.
“I just missed you today,” Danny hummed. “And I’m thankful that didn’t end in complete disaster. I felt completely horrible watching you sit all alone. I seriously wanted to throw up seeing your little sad face.”
“Really?” Sam asked, preening in Danny’s attention.
“I did!”
“I was only sad because I missed you, too,” Sam relinquished, putting his hand over Danny’s on his cheek. “I was surprised you were taking so long. You’re always early for me.”
“And I always will be,” Danny assured him. “I promise.”
“Even after I graduate?”
“Duh.”
“Even after I get some fancy science job and I have to move?”
“Sure.”
“Even after-”
“Whatever it is, yes, Sam, I’ll be there,” Danny laughed. “Seriously. I’ll follow you anywhere. And I’ll be right on time.”
Sam paused, drinking in the sincerity of the statement. Then, in typical Sam fashion, his face split into a cheeky smile.
“And if I ask you to go to a party with me?”
Danny swallowed, thinking hard as he relished in the warmth of Sam’s skin on his palm. Finally, he smiled in return and leaned in slightly.
“I’d go if you promise to never run again,” Danny whispered, and Sam shuddered slightly at the rasp in his voice. “And if you promise to always say the dumb shit you’re afraid of saying.”
“Yeah,” Sam agreed. “I promise.”
“One more pinky promise for the road?” Danny grinned, moving his hand from Sam’s face and holding out his pinky for Sam to grasp. Sam looked down at his digit and raised an eyebrow.
“I can do you one better,” Sam insisted.
Danny didn’t get the time for a witty retort before Sam leaned in and gave him another kiss. It was a little clumsy, and lasted far longer than necessary for the situation, but after it was done, Danny spent the entire ride home reveling in the realization that he’d just been promised a lifetime's worth of them. And he intended to cash in each and every one.

Things That Are Worth It
Things That Are Worth It
Jake x reader
Word Count: 5.6K
Warnings: little angsty; fluffy; talks of abortion; pregnancy (both forced and intentional); adoption; struggling teen moms
Summary: You and Jake tell your oldest child the story of their welcoming.
A/N: I wrote this before the SCOTUS Roe v. Wade reversal. Although this decision was on my radar and we knew it was coming, I like many others still felt a little blindsided. If you need a safe person to confide in, please reach out to me, and if you need help finding abortion resources, please let me know. I can help research and connect you to the right people.
Also, a quick disclaimer – I may have graduated law school and will (hopefully) be a practicing attorney in a few months, but I do not know how adoption/CPS/child custody cases work. Those are niche practice areas that have different rules in every jurisdiction, and so the “legal” pieces of this fic are purely fictional.
------
You knew this moment would eventually come, and you had truthfully thought it would have come years before now. However, neither you nor Jake had imagined that she would have read it in a magazine.
“How could you not tell me?!” your fourteen-year-old daughter exclaimed loudly, throwing her hands in the air. “All this time and you’re not even my real parents. I knew I didn’t look like either of you.”
“Baby, we are your parents. Just because Momma didn’t carry you for nine months doesn’t mean you aren’t ours,” Jake reasoned, grasping your shaking hand in one hand and fisting the magazine in his other.
“I feel like my entire life is a lie!” Vivy stormed out of the dining room, slamming her bedroom door at the top of the staircase.
You looked over at Jake whose eyes looked almost as watery as your own. “We’ve talked about how we were going to do this so many times, but it’s so much more difficult than I thought.”
“I know, honey. I just wish we had been able to have control of it.” Jake looked away from you towards the rolled-up magazine. He had been voted Guitarist of the Year for the umpteenth time, and the new author jumped at the opportunity to write about your family at the smallest mention of Jake’s inspiration. “I mean, seriously. ‘Jake’s family is a heavy inspiration for his and Greta Van Fleet’s music. His wife, Y/N, and their three children, Genevieve, June, and Wiley, are his biggest muses.’ That’s where they should have stopped, but no. God, I wish I knew who this ‘source’ is.”
You looked down at the rest of the article.
Jake’s family had quite the unusual start. Rumors started to swirl around Jake and his wife when a very pregnant Y/N was spotted with a very small baby towards the end of 2022. According to a source close to the pair, the couple adopted their oldest in 2022, and by June of 2023, the two had two children under 12 months old.
You leaned over and pressed your forehead into Jake’s shoulder, letting some tears flow. “This isn’t how I wanted this to go. What are we going to do, Jake?”
Jake’s hand came across his body to stroke your hair. “I’m not sure, baby. I think we should give her a couple minutes to cool off and then we go talk to her.”
“I guess you’re right,” you sighed.
Tonight was supposed to be a fun evening for you and Jake. The kids were to stay at Josh’s house for a sleepover, and you and Jake had plans to surprise your girls the next afternoon with their own separate bedrooms. At first, it was just easy to have the two babies in one room to avoid jumping from room to room throughout the night. Then, the girls grew to be the best of friends, and it broke your heart to even think about separating them. As soon as the girls became teenagers, however, they seemed to become slightly claustrophobic when it came to each other. You tried to ignore it, because watching your two baby girls grow into their own persons independent of each other was difficult to bear, but Jake was a realist. He convinced you once night while getting ready for bed that this could be a good thing, to have the girls become more independent. Plus, he reasoned, they each deserved to have a space they could call their own. Over the last couple of months, the two of you ordered new queen beds and other bedroom furniture that fit each of their personalities better than the matching accessories they had grown up with. Tonight was supposed to be the night the two of you would share a bottle of wine—and maybe a kiss or two—and put all of your girls’ rooms together in anticipation of surprising them the next day.
You rubbed at your eyes as you stood from the breakfast nook and opened the dishwasher to put some dishes away. Junie and Wiley were already at Josh’s, but Vivy had had volleyball practice before she could be dropped off. When she rushed to Jake’s car afterwards with the magazine rolled up in her fist and a look of indignation across her face, you knew she wasn’t going to be making it to Josh’s for movie night. Her look of betrayal burned into your brain.
“Y/N, you can leave those for Wiley to put away tomorrow, it’s his day.” Jake pressed his front to your back, wrapping himself around you while you reach up to place a bowl on it assigned shelf.
You sighed and continued reaching into the dishwasher to put more dishes away. “I need something to do, and they will start to smell like mildew if we leave them in here. Plus, I think it’s safe to say chores won’t be high on the list of priorities tomorrow.”
Jake gently took the mug out of your hands and placed it on the counter while pulling you closer to his chest. He placed a soft kiss to the juncture of your neck and shoulder blade and intertwined both of your hands.
“Baby, we’re gonna get through this, you and me and our three,” he chuckled into your neck at his little rhyme. “Do you remember what you told me the morning after the night she came?”
You choked out a watery laugh and closed your eyes at the memory, nodding your head as you rested it backwards on his shoulder. Of course you remembered; ever since you had let the phrase leave your lips he had quoted them back to you and told all your friends and family the story of the snide remark you had made.
“I think it was something like ‘if you wanted easy you shouldn’t have married me.’”
“That has always been my favorite part to tell, I had never seen you so fiery. It was the first time I had a glimpse of what you are like in the courtroom,” Jake laughed again. “But that’s only the first part. You said ‘of course it’s not going to be easy, but things that are worth it never are.’”
You thought back fondly of that weekend. It wasn’t even when she became yours, but it was the weekend you and Jake had fallen in love with her. It had been a chaotic and difficult few days, but retrospect is always sweeter.
14 years earlier…
“Shit, shit, shit, shit, shit,” you chanted as you struggled to place your files into your work bag while you exited the firm. A last-minute meeting with your firm’s top paying client had kept you an hour past the end of your usual Friday. Although this was not usually a big deal, your in-laws were set to have arrived two hours ago and you knew your house was already swarming with Kiszkas and close friends. You had promised Jake that you would make it home in time, and the meeting and your phone dying in the middle of it had you in a panic.
“Hey baby, are you leaving the office?” Jake answered your call as you exited the parking lot.
“Jake, I am so sorry. I know I promised I would be home an hour ago, but we had a last-minute meeting with our biggest client and my phone died halfway through so I couldn’t text you. Is everyone there already?”
“It’s okay. I checked your location when you hadn’t called and saw you were at the office still, so I figured something important had come up. Mom, Dad and Ronnie got in a little early, but the guys just showed up about thirty minutes ago. No need to rush, just get home safe,” he assured. “We’ve just been visiting and I’m about to fire up the grill. You’ll be just in time.”
“Okay, baby. I’ll be there soon. Love you.”
“Love you, too. Bye.”
. . .
“I’m so sorry I’m late,” you explain, walking through the sliding glass door onto the patio where your husband’s family and a few of your friends were situated. You planted a sweet kiss on Jake standing by the grill and made your way around the group to greet properly.
“It’s okay, dear, Jake told us you were called into a meeting. Where attorney duties call, boss babe attorneys answer!” You laughed at Karen’s words as you placed a kiss on her and Kelly’s cheeks. You had always loved the Kiszkas, and Karen had become like a second mother to you. You were sometimes amazed at the amount of pride and support they had left for you after how much they uplifted their hoard of children.
“Yeah, it was last minute. Hopefully it calmed some storms for the near future, at least. How was y’all’s trip?”
. . .
You caught up with the group briefly before it was time to eat, and your party moved indoors to the dining room for some more chatting over food. You were finally unwinding from your treacherous day, and Jake’s thumb rubbing patterns on the top of your thigh as his hand rested there helped soothe you even more.
“Then, we went to this vineyard in France and it’s very interesting how they grow their grapes…” Josh raved on charismatically, speaking with his hands as he recalled the band’s most recent tour in Europe. You smiled as you remembered the warm French breeze wisping through your hair as your mind buzzed slightly from the amount of wine you had “sampled.” You remember watching Jake, his lips and teeth tinged a slight purple, listening intently to your tour guide, and the way his skin shimmered in the golden sunset light against his white linen suit.  You remember falling more in love with him in that instant
A chime coming from both your and Jake’s phones simultaneously pulled you out of your memory, your Ring doorbell signaling movement had been detected outside your front door. You both looked over at each other with furrowed brows, but when Jake shrugged and resumed listening to Josh’s recount of European life, you let it go, too. Sometimes, a stray dog would throw off the doorbell, and everyone who could show up unannounced was already in your home, so it seemed of little consequence. However, a short moment later, the chime came again. And then again.
“Did you order something?” Jake leaned over to ask you in a soft tone, not wanting to disrupt the flowing conversation between his family and friends.
“I ordered those shoes I showed you at lunch today, but there’s no way they would be here already. And it’s 7:30 on a Friday night—I don’t think there would be any deliveries being made at this time,” you whispered back, brows furrowed once again in confusion.
Jake pulled his phone out of his pocket and you watched as he clicked on the notification to open the Ring app. You expected to see a stray or two playing around the front of your home, but you did not expect what was transpiring on your front porch.
At the top of the stairs, was a pile of items seemingly purposed for babies. Boxes of diapers, cans of formula, what looked like a diaper bag, and a few other bags that you could not see the contents of were stacked neatly against the railing of the porch. The most shocking part of the scene, however, was that a young woman was again opening the iron gate at the front of your yard and weaving a car seat through.
Your heart raced as you shared a wide-eyed look with Jake, and you jumped up from your seat to make it through the house to the front door. Josh’s story cut off, and you could feel the eyes of your company on your back, watching you with Jake hot on your heels make your way to the front of your home.  You knew what was happening, it wasn’t hard to deduce the decision the woman had made, and the advocate in you kicked right in.
You turned towards Jake with your hand on the door handle, jerking your head to the side to tell him to back off. You knew this was going to be a delicate situation, and despite your surprise and the questions you had, you wanted the woman to feel safe to tell you. You opened the door just as the woman had reached the halfway point of the walkway to the porch. She stilled immediately, and you could see the inner conflict she was having shift across her face. Should she run? Should she drop the baby here now that she had been caught? Should she continue on to the porch to leave the child where she had initially planned to?
You stepped out of the house, closing the door behind you and tried to give the woman the most reassuring smile you could muster. Now that you had a closer look at her, you could tell she was very young, maybe freshly eighteen. She looked at you quizzically and then back down to the sleeping baby she had in the car seat. It was clear she still hadn’t made up her mind of what to do.
“Hi,” you said simply, taking a seat on the porch swing facing the front lawn. You wanted to start gently, hoping to encourage the girl to speak with you. This one little word seemed to jump start her mind.
“Oh my god. Mrs. Kiszka, right? Y/N? I’m sorry I just—I don’t know what to—I saw you on your website and—” she blabbered on, taking rushed steps to the porch and settling the car seat at the top of the steps. Tears were flowing down her cheeks, and she roughly wiped them away as they came.
“Hey, slow down! It’s okay, just take a deep breath and have a seat if you’d like. I’m assuming you found me through my law firm?”
The girl nodded her head and wrung her hands together as she looked away from you. “I’m so sorry, I just can’t…your card fell out of someone’s pocket at the hospital, and I looked you up and I followed you here from your office.”
You looked towards the car seat to find what looked like a newborn who couldn’t have been more than a week old. “Okay. While you were at the hospital having baby…?” You looked up at the girl quizzically.
“Genevieve. Her name is Genevieve. Yes, on Monday.” She looked down at the sleeping baby, and more tears started to flow. “I just can’t,” she repeated, her breathing picking up again.
“That’s okay, that’s perfectly okay,” you tried to soothe. “Do you want to sit here with me for a moment? I can get you a bottle of water or something?”
She looked at you warily still, chewing on her bottom lip and pulling at the ends of her hair.
“You’re not in trouble, and I’m not going to report you for anything. I just want to help,” you offered, hoping she would trust you.
She sighed and sat on the top step with her back pushed against the pilar facing you slightly. She pulled her knees to her chest and pushed her face into them as she wrapped her arms around herself. You could see this situation was eating her up inside, and you held back tears yourself. As she sat, she also spoke. You learned that her name was Amelia, that she had just turned eighteen the week before, and that she had no one. She had gotten pregnant by some older guy who had only been in town a few weeks before the wind plucked him up again. She hadn’t known his real name, and any source of contact with him had led to dead ends. Abortion hadn’t been obtainable for her, and she had talked herself out of every attempt to speak with someone about adoption. She had gone through so many conflicting thoughts, thinking of keeping the baby and then realizing she couldn’t take care of her. The ultimate decision maker, she said, was when she got the acceptance letter to a university in the next state over with the opportunity to start her life over. She knew that she couldn’t go to school and raise the baby properly at the same time, and that if she stayed here she would just continue the cycle of abuse and desperation that would lead to her baby becoming just like her. When she saw your card, she looked you up and felt like you were the right person to leave her baby with. She had staked out your office since she had been released from the hospital, and today she finally drew up the courage to do what she had set out to do. She knew you would either love and cherish her daughter as your own or find someone who would.
“I will do everything I can to make sure she is safe and in a loving home, thank you for trusting me with her. But can I ask you why you thought I would be a safe bet for her? I can tell you care,” you asked, genuinely curious.
“I do care, and it scares me that people will think I just abandoned her or threw her out like nothing,” she commented. “I just saw that you are really successful and you seem happy. And then I saw your husband bring you lunch the other day, and it made me think about all the times I wish I had grown up with two parents who loved each other and loved me. I don’t know, it just felt right. I want her to have the life that I never had.”
I nodded along with her. You heard the front door behind you open, and Amelia jumped. Jake emerged from your home with two bottles of water and a plate of cheese, fruit and crackers. He immediately paused as he noticed Amelia’s apprehension, but you just nodded.
“I’m sorry to interrupt, I just wondered if you were hungry or thirsty or anything,” he trailed off softly, taking a small step forward and holding out the water bottle. Amelia gave him a tight-lipped smile and took the bottle of water, opening it to take a small sip.
“Amelia, this is my husband Jake,” you spoke out, accepting your own bottle of water he extended to you. “And Jake, this is Amelia.”
“Nice to meet you, Amelia. And who have we got here?” Jake questioned as the baby started to fuss. Amelia looked at the baby with wide eyes and then up to you quickly. It was obvious that even though she had spent a good three days with the baby, she was not prepared to be its caretaker. Jake noticed this, too, and you watched as he gestured towards the fussy baby to ask Amelia for permission to pick her up. When she nodded, he placed the plate of food on the porch next to her, gently unbuckled the infant and scooped her up.
The baby started to actually cry, and Jake’s face showed you he realized he had miscalculated. You chuckled and took the baby from his hands, rocking her gently in your arms. “Amelia, when was the last time she ate? Maybe she’s hungry,” you pondered out loud.
Amelia retrieved a bottle from one of the bags on the porch and Jake went inside to warm up some water. You spoke some more, letting Amelia eat what Jake had brought out and encouraging her to let you help her figure everything out before she left for school in a month. Eventually, she conceded, and you exchanged phone numbers and addresses before she left, giving one last kiss to the sleeping baby in your arms.
Jake helped you carry the baby and her things into the house, meeting the bewildered faces of the people closest to you. You smiled warily and shifted the sleeping baby in your arms to give them a better look.
“What is even going on here? I am so confused,” Sam piped up first.
“Well, I think we have another temporary guest tonight,” Jake airily chuckled, rubbing the back of his neck. His parents and siblings flocked to the baby,
You handed Jake the baby and excused yourself to your bedroom to call your friend Natalie at Child Protective Services. As vaguely as you could, you explained the situation and that you were advocating for the birth mother so that Amelia could get through the process smoothly and make it to school the next month. Natalie was familiar with this kind of situation, but she let you know that there were currently no foster homes equipped to take newborns on a Friday evening. She would have to come retrieve the baby to either take back to the hospital for the interim or to the CPS office until a foster home could be found on Monday. Something just didn’t feel right to you about that, so you suggested keeping the baby over the weekend. After some convincing, paperwork, and copies of drivers licenses of everyone in your home that weekend, Natalie agreed. As you were saying your goodbyes to Natalie, Jake walked into your shared bedroom.
“Y/N, what are you doing? Why did you ask for everyone’s IDs?” He crossed his arms while standing in front of you at the foot of the bed.
“Well, I uh…so here’s the thing,” you started, giving him a sheepish smile. “They don’t have a foster home available right now and the only other option is for her to go back to the hospital or to be stuck in a CPS office with some random CPS officer until they can look for a home on Monday. It just didn’t sit right with me, Jake, so I said she could stay here with us for the weekend.”
Jake looked at you incredulously for a moment, sighing and running a hand through his locks dramatically. “Baby, you can’t just make that decision without asking me! She’s not just a baby, she’s like 5 days old!”
“But Jake, I promised Amelia I would make sure she was loved and cherished and taken care of! If they took her to the hospital, she would just be another baby among a sea of babies, and if she went to the CPS office, she would get the most minimum care she needs. I’m sorry I didn’t consult you first, but I couldn’t hang up the phone!” you tried to explain. You knew you should have spoken with Jake before suggesting it, and you knew you could have called Natalie back after doing so, but something about the situation felt emergent.
Jake sighed and sat down next to you, placing his elbows on his knees and hanging his head between his shoulders. He put his chin in one hand and tilted his head to look at you. “We have no idea what to do with a baby, Y/N. This is going to be really hard.”
“If you wanted easy, you shouldn’t have married me!” you snapped, eyes wide and slightly glossy. “Of course it’s not going to be easy, but things that are worth it never are.”
His mouth opened and closed as he looked at you, and a smile slowly crept across his features. “You’re right. I guess I wouldn’t have said no, anyways. She’s kind of cute.” You smiled at each other and shared a quick kiss before heading back out into the living room to mingle with your family and your newest house guest.
The weekend seemed to drag on, you and Jake hardly getting any sleep. You had decided to place the pack-n-play Amelia had left in yours and Jake’s room, as it had been your decision to have her stay and it felt unfair to put your other house guests through her cries. You even felt bad for Jake, since it was your decision to host her, but he waived you off, reminding you consistently that he was your husband and that anything you chose to do you would do it together. So the two of you worked together to calm her nightly cries, change her diaper, cuddle her until she felt safe enough to sleep. Still, there was a lot the two of you did not know, and Karen and Kelly helped teach you and Jake how to take care of Genevieve. Ronnie kept her company long enough for both of you to shower and clean up around the house, and the guys came around throughout the weekend to keep everyone company.
Jake started calling her Vivy Sunday evening after she spit up on Sam’s new sweater. His laughter and “Atta girl, Vivy!” melted your heart, and your perspective started to shift. You and Karen watched from the kitchen as you prepared dinner, and she took note of your smile and slightly watery eyes. She knew you too well.
“She’s a real cutie, you know. You sure we have to give her back tomorrow?” Karen laughed, bumping your arm with hers. You laughed along with her, but her words stuck in the back of your mind.
“Babe, watch this!” Jake’s excited voice garnered your interest as he strutted into the kitchen with the baby in his arms. When he got close enough, he placed a couple kisses to the Genevieve’s cheek and in response she opened her eyes slightly and seemed to give a small smile. “She smiled!” He repeated the motion a couple times and smiled again.
“Oh, sweet girl,” you cooed, gently rubbing your thumb across her forehead. When you looked up at Jake, you saw a look of complete awe as he stared back at the baby. You wondered if he had the same voice in the back of his head.
. . .
Later that night, you and Jake sat in your bed watching a movie with a sleeping baby held close to your chest. It was way past 3 AM, but Genevieve had just fallen asleep after a couple of hours of being fussy, and your mind was still racing.
“What time is Natalie supposed to come get her?” Jake quietly questioned, turning on his side to face you and place a hand atop the one you held to the baby’s back.
“She didn’t say, she only said she would have to go to the office and make a few phone calls to find a foster home willing to take her first. I texted the partners and let them know the situation, so they can reach me on my cell tomorrow if they need to. Or today, I guess.”
There was a moment of silence between the two of you, and you looked down fondly at the sleeping baby once more.
“Do you think—”
“I have an ide—”
You both started at the same time. You chuckled and Jake motioned for you to start first.
“I just…okay, I know we talked about trying for a baby in like a year,” you trailed off, trying to find the words. “But do you think that maybe now is a good time? I mean, you guys are taking a break to work on the new album for a few months, and when you go back on tour maybe we could just come with you—”
“We?” Jake questioned, and you could swear you saw a glimmer of hope in his eyes when you looked back at him.
“I mean, I don’t know, Jake. The past couple of days have been some of the hardest days of my life, but they were also so fulfilling. And then you came in the kitchen tonight and she smiled when you kissed her little cheek, and I just…I don’t know if I’m ready to let her go tomorrow.” You sighed and sat up enough to pull the baby from your chest and rest her gently on the bed between your outstretched legs.
Jake was silent for a minute, and you were honestly afraid to look up at him to search his face for the words he hadn’t yet spoken. Maybe he didn’t feel the same way and this has just been a fun little experiment for him. Maybe he would rather you stick to the original plan of starting your family in a year. But when you finally built enough courage to look up at him, your worries dissipated. Jake had moved up to sit against the headboard, his knees bent as he looked over at you. His eyes were watery with joy and he smiled behind a bit lip.
“Y-yeah, yeah I think she should maybe stay here,” Jake responded with a cough, ever trying to hold on to his tough-guy demeanor. “And I think maybe we should make her ours.”
“Yeah, I think so, too,” you nodded. Jake stood up from the bed and took Genevieve to the pack-n-play to lay her down. You followed along behind him, and the two of you stood watching over her as she slept, hand in hand.
You called Natalie first thing the next morning after confirming once again with Jake that this was something you were sure you both wanted. Your families were delighted, and everyone helped the best they could over the next couple weeks getting your new daughter settled into her rightful place in your home. Amelia was ecstatic when you asked her if she would allow you and Jake to adopt the baby, saying that she had hoped you would say so. The three of you worked through the process together, and soon Amelia was off to college with the biggest weight lifted off of her shoulders. You didn’t hear much from her again, save for the graduation announcements from undergrad and –surprisingly—law school with little notes of appreciation and inspiration to you. You tried keeping in touch with her, but she kindly asked you to allow the both of you to live your lives separately. And you were proud to let her live out her dreams without you.
Two months after welcoming Vivy as your daughter, you found out you were pregnant. Terrified was a severe understatement, but when you showed Jake the test, he belted out the most elated belly laugh you thought you would ever hear from him. You remember him setting Vivy down in her bouncer and smashing your cheeks between his palms to kiss you deeply. He made sure to tell you all night how much he loved you, how much he loved your family already, and how much he was going to love adding a new little one to love. When you worried about handling two babies so close together, he would say he had two arms for a reason. He did so much to assure you that this was an exciting thing, and that he would be happy to have a busload more if you wanted them. When June came, and a 10-month-old Vivy smiled and clapped when she met her little sister for the first time, you felt like your heart would actually burst. Unadulterated happiness is the only way you could describe it.
Present time…
You sniffled as you remembered that weekend. It wasn’t easy, but it really had been worth it.
“Yeah, it was worth it. Even the terrible twos,” you laughed. You could feel Jake’s smile on your neck.
“It was and still is. Do you remember when she cried the first time I put her in time out? Broke my heart. Her big round eyes and her puckered lip still haunt me to this day.”
“Oh, my favorite is when she cried at the hospital when she found out Wiley was a boy and not another baby sister for her,” you laughed.
“Oh my gosh! Yeah, when I went out to go get them and tell everyone he was a boy she was not happy. But you should have seen Junie, she kept hugging and patting Vivy on the head and saying ‘its okay sissy, you still got me!’ and Vivy would just cry louder. It was the funniest thing, and I had to try so hard not to laugh at them.”
The two of you laughed some more, and you eventually turned in Jakes arms to lean your head against his chest. “Do you think we’ve given her enough time yet?”
“Yeah, do you want to lead the way or me?”
The rest of that night was spent telling Vivy the entire story and showing her the graduation announcements Amelia had sent. The three of you cried together, laughed together, and Jake reminded her that families are made up of all kinds of people and that blood relation was not a requirement. He reminded her that Uncle Danny was not his blood brother, but that he would always be in their lives. He reminded her that she may not have the same physical features as you or Jake, but that she had your heart and his amazing style (to which she fell over laughing). He reminded her that sometimes people have babies that aren’t meant to have them, and that the best thing her birth mother did for her was giving her the life she had never had. He reminded her to be grateful to Amelia, and that if she ever wanted to meet her, he would hold one hand and you would hold her other. He reminded her that she was loved, and that she would always be your first baby girl.
And he reminded you that your little family was worth everything and more.

I'm rewatching HOD again (such a comfort show) and thinking about george and annabeth again and how it's so perfect that annabeth was one of the very few people who was like "meh" about "golden boy" George Tucker then they fell in love :D if you have any more hcs about pre-series or pre-getting together george and annabeth please do share!! :D
Love any excuse to talk about them, thank you!
-for starters, I think they're probably the two members of the Yeehaw Six who have low key known each other the longest. Like I literally think George & AB have known each other since birth. We know both sets of parents were Auburn alums living in Bluebell - I bet even if they weren't close friends, they were still very friendly (also George's parents are THRILLED when he starts dating AB so).
-Like I bet their moms would meet up in town square once in awhile and walk them in their strollers together. I bet there were barbecue dinners where George & AB were forced to play together cause they were the same age (we know Harry is older - is AB's sister older or younger do we think?). Maybe there's even a very awkward shared toddler bath photo that Lemon somehow digs up for their (2nd) wedding reception.
-But despite the forced proximity, they are never friends. First, because they're at an age where they think boys & girls shouldn't be friends (the gender essentialism in Bluebell in the 80s must've gone crazyyyyyyyy). And later, cause they get on each other's nerves in a way only family friends can.
-Like when Lemon's all thirsting over George in high school, AB is just baffled. "Him? He's hot to you? I've seen him vomit up grape soda out of his nose while covered in barbecue sauce, trust me, he is so NOT hot". (It becomes a debate that gets the whole cheer team involved. AB sorely loses)
-Doesn't stop Lemon from trying to get them to get along though! (And now here is where I'll link my very first fic)
-I think they both probably went to Auburn (and without Lemon) and would occasionally cross paths and talk about Lemon, but again, they never became friends, this time mainly cause they had their own circles.
-AB moved back to Bluebell after college and married Jake but George went off to law school and then New York and their interactions became limited to the rare double date with Lemon when he was home.
-One of the things I think is really interesting about HoD is how disconnected the Yeehaw Six start off from each other, despite some old connections (mainly cause these old connections are kinda retcons lol). Like Wade & George are distant, AB & Lemon are distant. Lavon & Lemon are on the outs and he seems to barely know George and AB (which makes sense considering he would've been four grades ahead of them).
-So anyway my headcanon for all of that is George coming back from New York was like a bomb. Golden Boy was back. So Lemon broke things off with Lavon. AB had to contend with Lemon, who had already been distant the past six weeks (what was going on there?), becoming even more distant, as she threw herself into an engagement with George. And Wade was finally feeling settled in a way (as much as he could at that point). He got a day job at the Rammer Jammer and he moved into Lavon's gate house and things were looking up but now Golden Boy is back and he's bringing back fifteen years of Wade's resentments with him.
-Anyway, anyway, back to George & AB - one of the most important lines to me of their courtship is "I know you, George Tucker!" Because like, even though those two barely interact the entire series until their arc, AB has his number pegged from the jump. And that, to me, is evidence of some life long connection, the kind you can only have from knowing someone forever, since when they were not even really a person yet.
-So yeah, that's a very important part of why I like them, cause it's all about two people who have known each other forever finally seeing each other in a new light <3
-And, yes, AB being George's one love interest who's "meh" about the Golden Boy thing is also very important, because it allows her to see him as a person and not a saint. And that's what real love is babey!!!

Don’t think I’ve posted shots from this scene before. Wexler is angy as usual (this time bc his dumbass fellow cowboy shot at coyotes and blew their cover), but the nice part about that is his accent comes out, especially around units of measurement (e.g., 20 miles = “twenneh mile”). Wish Google Directions offered that voice option. 😏
Bonus: Is this a new variety of bounce below?

The 100 Rewatch 2023 ep 1.3
Earth Kills.
Yes we love the Earth Skills/Earth Kills play on words.
On the Ark, flash back young happy Jahas and Griffins. They are so cute. Ugh that look Jaha gives Abby and Jake when they're being romantic. So longing, so pining. Frankly that would have been a good storyline.
Groaning Jasper who everyone thinks is dying. Ooh Clarke hears Charlotte having a nightmare. This is a terrible storyline but actually a really good one. The horror, the pain, the tragedy. It points out the injustice of the systems on the Ark. Jailing a prepubescent girl who just lost her parents for assaulting a guard? Where were you Jaha when that went down? Was that a place where you needed to enforce the rules?
Oh, the missing kids. Trina and somebody else. "Trina Relax we're fine." What is that? Oh that's the poison fog. Not fine. Nope. Great way to introduce tension and danger frankly.
Bellamy showing off with his throwing knives. Murphy being an ass. Atom being Bellamy's bitch. lol. Pascale. That's the other one. No they're not just lost. He makes Murphy guard the camp.
Trying to save Jasper who's wound is infected.
O trying to make moves on Atom and Atom taking his punishment and ignoring her. O and Bellamy confrontation. Bellamy being a jackass big brother. Meanwhile Clarke is debriding Jasper's wound and Bellamy thinks he can't save him. "Down here every life matters."
Bellamy. "Look at him, he's a lost cause." THere's a bit of an oracle. Bellamy meanwhile thinks Clarke doesn't have the guts.
"Power hungry self serving jackass. He doesn't care about anyone but himself." Says Monty. Which is actually completely wrong.
Finn however agrees with him about Jasper being a lost cause and that's ANOTHER clue where that guy discards people like trash. Bellamy is wrong and so is Finn.
Abby and Jake fighting about the Ark dying and wanting to tell everyone. He's TALL. And has big shoulders.
Clarke examingin the grounder poultice (go away finn) Wells has figured out what the poultice is and is telling her how to find it and she keeps rolling her eyes and talking to Finn. More blaming him for getting her dad killed. The three find a hidden car. Neat.
Bellamy hunting, turns around and flings an axe and almost hits Charlotte. Enter big brother bellamy. He gives her a knife. Discussion about killing things. "Who knows maybe you're good at it."
They find the seaweed and Wells worries about the sea monster, Finn talks about rigging something. Clarke wades in and gets it. Oh, flock of birds fleeing. The grounder warning horn. O. Kno. RUN RUN.
boo back to the ARk. If it isn't Raven I don't care. Oh its another flashback we find Wells and Clarke playing chess. She tells him about her dad. Yeah yeah. I know. She's wrong. She will regret how she treated him. And we never had enough time for it to matter. I do not like that story choice. Despite it being important later. They shouldn't have killed off Wells.
They run from the poison gas and find the car. Bellamy takes Charlotte into a cave, Atom falls and is caught in it. The kids are running into the dropship. Good and scary.
Wells, Clarke and Finn find booze. Wells "alcohol is toxic." Lawful good. Goodie goodie. which makes Clarke rebel.
Charlotte in the cave with the bad dreams. Bellamy and his fateful inspiring speech telling her to slay her demons when she's awake and they won't be there in her sleep. Fear is weakness. Weakness is death. When you feel afraid hold tight to that knife and say 'screw you, i'm not a afraid.' Sigh. Obviously she doesn't have a hold of her sanity. Or maybe she does. They're setting up a new society down there where people threaten and fight and torture. This is what Bellamy did until he realizes the consequences.
I don't actually want to listen to this drunk Clarke blaming Wells forever for something he didn't do. Ugh. LEave him alone Clarke. Finn tells her to take it easy. Clarke. "I have no idea how to do that." Wells DOES drink the booze. See he would have lightened up.
Jasper still howling in pain. Murphy says he's gonna kill him. Monty and O lock him out. Murphy was awful. Terrible. Great bad guy. Oh hey, anyone watch Flash? I saw Richard was playing a bad guy on that. He's really good at a creepy, morally gray, oddly attractive bad guy.
Clarke wants to be a part of the plot to reveal the dying Ark. She calls her dad dumb. lol. "you picked a fine time to start being a rebellious teenager." And Jake is arrested.
Acid fog gone. Finn doesn't think Wells is innocent of what she accuses him of. This is actually one of the times I don't hate Finn. He's right. But he's always trying to get into her life, behind her walls.
Charlotte finds Atom. Atom tells Bellamy to kill him. She gives the knife to Bellamy. He sends her back to camp. Clarke arrives over his shoulder. She gets right to work. No. He's not gonna make it. She tells Atom she's gonna help him. Takes the knife from Bellamy and starts humming. Bellamy just watches her while she cuts his carotid.(so does charlotte.) They're back in camp.
Bellamy "Get Clarke wahtever she needs." The turning point in their relationship from Enemies to partners.
O blames Bellamy for Atom's death which is stupid. IT's not his fault. And he takes the blame. That is one dynamic I don't like. The O&B blame bellamy carousel. I get why she does it and it's true to character, but it takes so long to grow out of it.
Floating Jake. I know it's the basis for Clarke's character but I guess I'm less interested in what happened before the show and more interested to the things ON the show. A bit of tear jerking. Wells is there. Jaha is there. Abby is there. Wells does not look happy. HE shot his dad a horrified look. DId they need to have Jake flip out of the ship like a fricking flap jack? lol.
Giving Jasper seaweed soup. Clarke apologizes to O about Atom's death. O says "I guess we're going to have to get used to people dying." And that's some more oracle work isn't it?
Clarke finally figures out that it was her mom not Wells who told on Jake. Honestly. That's exhausting too. I'm glad that she grew out of the holding grudges phase. Not yet, but soon. This is the story that teaches her to let go.
Octavia and MOnty drinking the booze. Jasper wakes up.
Finn, "Welcome back buddy." ARen't you the one who kept trying to leave him to die?
Wells watching the sunset. along comes a spider. Or charlotte. And they have a nice little moment, and talk about nightmares. "I think I found a way to make them stop. Sorry." stabs him. chops off his fingers. Sharp knife. She tells the story of how she sees Wells father ever night killing her parents and she wakes up and sees his. The only way to make it better is to slay her demons. She had to. And hums while he dies.
SUPER HARSH. Pretty damn effective though. If I recall, that was when I had to reevaluate my opinion of this show as being pretty teens in the post apocalypse. Or no. I think it was the one two punch of Atom being put out of his misery and then Wells being murdered by a misguided traumatized teen.
Of course as soon as they reconcile, Wells dies.
The acting is all better now. The storylines are more original. The characters have more depth. The kids are less stupid because theres more risk out there.
I do not love Clarke's grudge holding in this episode. She's acting like a child. Granted, she IS a child. So it's not a fatal character flaw, and she definitely grows up.
These kids are all traumatized.
I want to see them heal and get strong and find love and be happy.
