You know, watching Legend of Vox Machina Season II really reminds me that 5e dragons just got the short end of the stick.

All 5e dragons follow the same template:

A Multiattack

A Bite

A Claw

A couple of Legendary actions which usually include a tail slap and a wing attack.

A breath attack that recharges on a 5-6.

Whereas the dragons in LOVM are using abilities like:

An AOE acid flyover attack caused by the wings scattering acid.

Creating ice walls to separate the party.

Lingering poison gas clouds.

AOE flame attacks that strike a wide area and leave lingering flames.

You know what this reminds me of? 4e's dragons. Like, look at this ability from a 4th Edition Black Dragon.

Sets up a cloud of darkness that blinds everyone within it, allowing the dragon to evade attacks and pick off the weaker enemies.

The Ancient Red Dragon, by contrast, punishes you for trying to fight it. It has an innate aura that makes it hard to shoot it. It has a fire aura that damages anyone who tries to get in close. Anyone who tries to flank it gets slapped away. Anyone who tries to stay at range gets burned by either its Breath Weapon or single target Immolate attack.

And do you see that kicker on the breath weapon? The Red Dragon's flames are so powerful it can overcome damage resistance. There is no safe way to fight an Ancient Red Dragon.

Compare that to 5e's Ancient Red Dragon.

God, that shit is dull. It's just a better Wyrmling. It has some more attacks and a few extra powers. Half its abilities can be hard countered with a Ring of Fire Elemental Command. Lair actions make things a bit more interesting, but it's still mostly variations on "do something with fire."

4e had a lot of faults, but the monsters at least had interesting powers.

i. O nome de Mavis significa, literalmente, “pássaro canoro”. A mãe o escolheu pelo significado, já que ela mesma é apaixonada por música. É por isso, também, que ela costuma chamar Mavis de “passarinho”, e por isso que a própria garota se associa a imagens de pássaros.

ii. Após o ensino médio, Mavis ingressou na Universidade da Califórnia. Ela cursou Enfermagem e está formada, mas precisou afastar-se do cargo quando recebeu o chamado de Dionísio. A formação, obviamente, foi de acréscimo imensurável à equipe dos Curandeiros, pois agora é ainda mais eficiente em ajudá-los. Não pode negar, porém, que sua verdadeira primeira opção de curso seria Música, se não fosse tão preocupada em ganhar dinheiro para a mãe e ela.

iii. A mãe é imigrante argentina e a ensinou espanhol desde a infância. Mavis possui uma grande paixão pelas causas da comunidade latina nos Estados Unidos e se esforça para conectar-se às raízes da mãe, ainda que também reconheça as diferenças culturais entre a criação dela e a sua, pois nasceu em território norte-americano e, devido à condição financeira de sua família, nunca sequer teve a chance de visitar a Argentina.

iv. Mavis compõe desde a infância, mas prefere morrer a deixar que alguém leia uma de suas músicas escritas quando tinha nove anos de idade. Na verdade, ela não costuma compartilhar suas criações até hoje — exceto pelas músicas que mostra aos outros membros da Tartarus Tragedy, a banda de metal formada por semideuses do Acampamento Meio-Sangue na qual entrou no fim de 2023.

v. O incêndio no baile de Afrodite e Eros deixou uma marca em Mavis: uma cicatriz de queimadura na metade inferior de suas costas, com um formato que se assemelha a uma estrela. Ela foi resultado de uma das falsas estrelas no céu projetado do pavilhão pegar fogo e cair diretamente na garota. Felizmente, o fogo atingiu primeiro seu vestido, protegendo-a de ferimentos ainda piores. Mavis não se importa em escondê-la, e é normal que ela apareça entre suas roupas, especialmente por usar muitos croppeds.

vi. Falando em roupas, muitas das camisetas do Acampamento Meio-Sangue de Mavis são customizadas, tenham sido cortadas em croppeds e regatas ou simplesmente serem versões completamente novas da estampa, adaptadas para o chalé de Apolo.
