nine books

fine, you win @cha-melodius, @tintagel-or-cockleshells, @kiwiana-writes, @clottedcreamfudge, @cricketnationrise, @liminalmemories21 @sherryvalli I will share nine favourites books/authors I will read no questions asked (aka Lims' variation), despite the fact that every time I get tagged I forget every book I’ve ever read.

with the somewhat shameful admission that I have read only one actual book in the last 12ish months 🙈 (but many hundreds of thousands of words of fanfic), in no particular order:

Red, White & Royal Blue - Casey McQuiston: no explanation necessary, right? This book is everything to me for so many reasons, not least that it brought me some of the best people I know 💖

Pride & Prejudice - Jane Austen: I read this for school in year 9 and fell in love with romance as a genre. I reread it at least once a year for a very long time.

Song of the Lioness Quartet - Tamora Pierce (and all of the books set in Tortall tbh): yes, this is a series. Alanna and her adventures are very dear to my heart, and I love that in recent years, the author has said that if she was writing the books now, she’d probably describe Alanna as non-binary but she didn’t have that language when she wrote the books in the 80s. I’m very excited to introduce this quartet to my eldest soon.

The Hunger Games - Suzanne Collins: for a while, I devoured pretty much YA dystopian fiction book out there and this is the best of them. I’ve read them many times, and they hold a special place in my heart because they were a familiar, comforting reread at a very difficult time in my life.

The Snail & the Whale - Julia Donaldson: a children’s picture book, yes. But I’ve read it aloud hundreds of times to my kids and it’s just such a beautiful story about seeing the wonders of the world from a new perspective. It’s got such a lovely cadence and rhythm to it too, when read aloud.

Something Wild & Wonderful - Anita Kelly: aka the one (1) book I’ve read recently. I preordered this because I really enjoyed her other book, Love & Other Disasters, but it sat unread on my kindle for months until a friend mentioned that they’d started it. A quick look at the blurb gave me similar vibes to Fifteen Hundred Miles, one of my all time favourite Schitt’s Creek fics, so I started it and I could barely put it down! I sobbed for the last 60 pages or so - sad and then happy tears and it was wonderful.

The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo - Taylor Jenkins Reid: I loved everything about this. Compelling storytelling, with an imperfect protagonist who you hope succeeds despite her flaws.

and two authors who I’d read anything they published, without question:

Casey McQuiston - they haven’t failed me yet. I didn’t like I Kissed Shara Wheeler as much as RWRB and One Last Stop, but it was a good read and had characters who I love (Smith, my beloved). For a while there, I was convinced that it was going to take CMQ4 to break my book drought.

Alexis Hall - Boyfriend Material was the first book of his that I read, and I quickly read a lot of his back catalogue along with everything he’s published since and there’s nothing I’ve read that I haven’t enjoyed immensely. Plus, when I was on Twitter, I soon learned that Alexis loves to have a conversation almost entirely in Schitt’s Creek gifs and anyone who does that immediately endears themselves to me 😅

What's your favorite thing about DJATS book? Side note: I'd probably listen to the audiobook, but I already had the actors voices in my head while reading the book, and hearing other voices read those lines would be weird. I'd half expect, for example, Rod's lines to be in Timothy Olyphant's voice.

It was the ending that really got me. I was so full of emotions I had to go for a walk in the park. Oh I can't wait to see Sam Claflin in the role of Billy, I thought. Sigh, sweet summer child. No wonder I had such a trauma from the show. Well, maybe not trauma, that's too strong a word. Distress.

Favourite parts were Karen's abortion, and that she stayed single, and, of course, the conversation between Camila and Daisy in the hotel room in Chicago. When Camila said, I hope I never see you again, holding little Julia in her arms, like a lioness protecting her family, that stayed with me for a long time. Also actually the book never telling us whether Billy made that phonecall to Daisy, and whether she answered.

Actually, can anyone tell me how I can learn some sort of magic with which I can curse the show's writers so that they will never be able to write again? Thanks in advance.

Oh my, thank you for the enthusiastic and sweet reply! Actually, the ship is a bit niche, F/F ships (even Nyo!versions) are even more niche in this fandom, so receiving a reply in the first place makes it a highly unexpected therefore even more pleasant surprise. (❁´◡`❁)

Alright, there're so many HCs going into their Nyo! + parenting dynamics, I need some preface: A lot of Alice's ineraction with her kids is based on @historia-vitae-magistras work about Arthur and his ilk, many HCs about Maria and Ludwig are based on @kisamesopelagic and me gushing over Gilbert's and Ludwig's dynamic. An entire HC vomit going on under the cut.

For Alice, I imagine her to be quiet similar in character to Arthur although more temperamental and prickly since in some periods her being the incarnation of a large empire was strongly questioned which let's her temper flare up. She has to though. Master of hidden quips, insults, and observation of social circles. Now to Maria Julia Beilschmidt, nicknamed "Julchen" only by close friends. (I'm aware that Julchen is Nyo!Prussia's popular fanon name although in German it's a diminutive nickname form for the male name "Julian", rarely for it's female versions. Therefore I accept it mostly as nickname for her middle name, maybe from the times when Elizaveta or Roderich talked to her dismissively to undermine her authority.) Thanks to Nicky's HC, Gilbert's copious mode to work in spite of 23 layers of religious repression is artificially inflating his ego and developing a bit of megalomania, Maria has more self-confidence is actual self confidence. She was handed nothing because of her gender. If she wasn't fighting anyone else, she had to fight within her own ranks for respect to keep her head above water, having learnt that brashness and unapologetically standing your ground keeps her afloat.

In my HC Maria is surprisingly good with kids, to everyone's surprise, even to her own surprise. Ludwig wasn't an accident, he very much was a Prussian project yet Maria couldn't help but to slowly adore that frail, desoriented kid (which increasingly talks for hours about trains). That doesn't mean that Maria is the best parent, she seriously lacks in sensitivity, opens, and emotions. Or to put it differently: "The way to hell is paved with good intentions." A lot of her own expectations on how and who Ludwig should be is packed in her education, all the tools she got for her developement are pushed into Ludwig's hands as a "one size fits all" and "This is how I got big and strong so that must work for you!", no questioning of her methods possible. Fact is, Ludwig is an earnest, hard-working kid yet only in his adult years he realizes that he would've needed the emotional tools of reflection. At the same time, Maria can be really fun. During training she's encouraging, believing that her sibling or kid is the best thing that happened in her life. Oh, and Maria can be child-like. Since she didn't have a childhood (being a military order), playing pranks, fooling around, encouragement for arts and crafts (excuses it with: "This creativity and fine mechanical skills are good for your future career as engineer!") is something she will part-take in. Defends her loved ones like lioness who got previously stepped onto her tail. And does like to listen to children talk, partly because children's tales are so imaginative and fun, partly because she takes kids seriously although not the best at handling any situation which can't be solved with replies like "there, there" or "well, here's the five step way to succeed out of this mess". Alright, now finally, Alice and Maria with their kids: Alice did this to herself, she chose to take on so many projects, she favours, she expects her children to make it on their own. The most sore kid-parent-relationships are probably with Leon and Harry (Singapore). Both, Yao and Shadiq (Malaysia) are furious about Alice deliberately taking in Harry and Leon, leading to weird co-parenting scenarios which make especially Harry, as he's the youngest, quiet nervous. When Maria got involved with Alice was kinda trying to clean up Alice's messes. Not like Alice actually had any non-political messes in her lives, Maria just assumed so because Alice's living style wasn't up to Prussian householding guidelines. (The fights they got into because Maria tried to Kondo Alice's main residence without asking for permission first whereas Alice secretly stashes a lot of memories of her kids.) One of the few welcome additions was Maria setting up entire folders of spreadsheets of appointments, meal plans, and activities for the kids though. At some point Alice and Maria both agree that they can privately interact with each other's kids but any political involvement is taboo. Private interaction include arts and crafts, excursions (Alice always organizes these, the last one Maria lead was a eight hour "Spaziergang" including tents, hiking boots, and some mountain climbing), reading stories, eating together. Whereas Ludwig remains fiercely within Maria's care, things got a bit more relaxed for Alice since Maria has a lot of energy (also the unshakable will) to organize the household as well structuring their daily life properly so the two women have some time left for themselves in spite of all the work. (I could go on for longer what their relationship looks like but this post is already long enough. @____@)

Since the actual parenting situation for Harry and Leon is Alice's personal problem, Maria has a lot of opinions but Alice drew a strict line to not involve a foul-mouthed, "isn't diplomacy another military verbal tactic?!" girlfriend in it too. So, they don't interact much with Maria yet Ludwig can join them on playdates whenever they're in Alice's house at the same time. (@hetahonda and I like to joke how across sea and land Singaporeans and Swiss people are so strinkingly similiar. Is Switzerland the Singapore of Europe, is Singapore the Switzerland of SEA? In any case, hence the reason reason Ludwig gets along well with Harry, he reminds him a lot of cousin Zwingli.) Ludwig and Harry, on the few occasions they meet, are getting along without talking much. They go on exploration walks for bug hunts or play train, all very chill.

Zee, Eleanor, isn't only Alice's favourite, Maria took a strong liking to her too. It might be a bit of a gendered thing since both see themselves in a a resiliant, resourceful, defiant girl (although irony that Alice is the one occupying her). Eleanor, as she only meets Maria on private occassions, considers Maria to be a person lacking in tact or seriousness so she's reluctant to interact with her. This frustrates Maria who tries to explicitly have girl-activities (horse riding, archery, shooting range, what a great girls day!) together. Eleanor developed a strategy to surround herself with her fellow siblings whenever Maria's announced to visit. Funny enough, Eleanor learns from Alfred that Maria is a fearsome foe on the battlefield, leading her troops under an iron-hard regiment. Fun fact, for a while Prussia supported the US-independence movement. So, I would argue that Maria can handle Alfred who stills sees her as former teacher. In return Alfred will for very long time remain a greenhorn thinking too early of himself as a hotshot. Together they love to tease Alice although Maria sometimes reminds Alfred that she considers herself in a higher social rank than him. Considering how Alfred has a Golden Retriever personality, he's a bit hurt that his military idol doesn't think as highly of him as he thinks of her. In any case, after having learnt about Maria's other nature, Eleanor reluctantly respects Maria, even asks her about battle strategy. In a moment of enthusiasm Eleanor babbles about the proud warriors among her people. Ludwig and Alfred get along well. Both get involved in model building, planning to craft crazy machines. It's a cute sight both being busy building intricate machinations, Alfred talking, Ludwig giving barely any response. Anyhow, Ludwig describes Alfred: "Really good bud."

Ok, Jack and Matt. Jack is actually someone with whom Maria struggles. He has a head of his own, attracts accidents and wildlife like a reverse lotus flower. Whereas Alfred seems to be born cafeeinated, he sometimes sees a point in structure. Jack on the other hand could be left entirely on his own, he would end up best friends with any animal meeting him, not getting why everybody's raving so much about social constructs like punctuality, organigrams, or q-tips. While Alice forbade Maria to interact with her education except for helping out with householding chores as well as setting up admittedly helpful daily plans, Maria's impulse is heavily tested whenever she sits next to Jack who tells her all about his wild ravings. Sometimes Jack comes along with Harry and Ludwig for bughunts. Very handy, since within five minutes even the rarest critters run over Jack's hands. Towards Matt Maria is similarly gentle for the same reason she's gentle to Ludwig. Matt is well-raised (something Maria considers very important) while capable surviving the coldest winters, sometimes on his own. Matthew likes to stick to Alfred or Eleanor whenever Maria's in the house yet enjoys her company when she reads fairy tales to the kids, or, unlike Alice, asks about his latest life events.

Mmmh I really don't watch a lot of movies so I list the ones I enjoy to re-watch, let's see if I make it to ten ;)

1. A Roman Holiday with Audrey Hepburn: I remember watching it at my grandmother's, loved how they had a great day and then still went on with their separate lifes in the end. Also she is so pretty and Rome is gorgeous.

2. 10 things I hate about you: the only movie I ever owned on dvd because Heath Ledger and Julia Stiles.

3. Clueless: I like the chaos of this story.

4. The Holiday: Jude Law and Kate Winslet, I like looking at them.

5. Any romcom with Reese Witherspoon, bc Reese Witherspoon

6. Höllentour: Tour de France, great images, Erik Zabel getting massages, Intimacy of tdf roommates and a lofi trumpet soundtrack by my boy Till Brönner, back when he still made good music.

And that's it for movies I think! 2 - 5 are really because they are inconsequential entertainment, love it. Also I have a thing for curly blondes...

I'll add what's really comforting for me: my all time favorite go to comfort books!

8. The Lioness Quartet by Tamora Pierce: know them almost by heart, I can loose myself in that world like in no other and forget everything while I read.

9. Die Ponys vom Fjord: Horse Girl book set in Norway, girl loves pony but pony is happier elsewhere and they go their separate ways. Full of love for ponies, Norwegian landscape and food, actually nuanced and interesting relationships between the humans, teenager as well as adults.

10. Ovid's Metamorphoses: translated to German but with the original rhythm thingy. For a specific sort of existential crisis, usually in winter, makes me forget everything as well.

2. Did you reread anything? What?

Yes! I reread a few things this year. I did a reread of the Song of the Lioness Quartet by Tamora Pierce. I haven't reread these in a few years because I was disappointed in my last reread of them and I can see why, the books start out way stronger than they end.

I also reread Maggie Stefvater's Raven Cycle, but this time on audio, and let me tell you, I am not about Will Patton as a narrator. I'm not sure if it was because I sped it up so fast in order to tolerate him or if his Kavinsky really did sound like a reasonably good Bernie Sanders impression.

Many things. Many, many things. I have a whole list of books I want to read that is 116 items long. I think the things I am most sad about not getting to this year are the sequels to Ninth Rain, A Desolation Called Peace and the GIANT backlog of Sherwood Smith novels that I have (I managed one book of the like, idk, 15 book backlog?)

13. What were your least favorite books of the year?

Least favorite book I finished was Mr. Penumbra's 24 Hour Bookstore, by Robin Sloan. Least favorite I didn't bother to finish was The Viscount Who Loved Me, by Julia Quinn. S2 of Bridgerton made me think it would be good, but all the good parts from the show weren't in the book and all the bad parts from the show were.

19. Did you use your library?

Yes! I read one dead tree library book and I absolutely adore the library apps (Overdrive/Libby and Hoopla), I also used their databases, and participated in a readathon put on by the friends of the library to raise money. Also I used two libraries illegally. Library crime!

Alina and her friends 1 Chapter:The beginning

This story began in an ordinary city in the country of Russia, where ordinary people and humanoid animals lived. In one multi-storey building lived a friendly lioness girl Alina, who loved to fantasize. She lived with her parents and her pet cat Redhead.

Although Alina sometimes got angry if someone mocked her. But still, she loves her family and treats them well. One day, an unexpected thing happened while she was sleeping with a Redhead. Her parents were having breakfast and watching TV, which is now showing the news.

Leader:Today we had an incident that we didn't see.

Seryozha (Alina's Dad):Probably came up with nonsense.

Leader:In the city of Omsk, a man saw something round and familiar in the forest. (Holds out the microphone to the forester)

The Forester:Anyway, when I went to inspect, all of a sudden I saw a cool creature.

Natalia (Alina's Mother):Why does it sound familiar?

Alina went to the kitchen until she heard familiar words.

Leader:Also in the USA, in the city of Highland Isle, they talked about animatronics that have not been there for a long time (Alina stopped).

Alina:Why does it sound familiar? As if they really exist? (She went into the kitchen) Good morning.

Alina's parents:Good morning.

Alina:(She sat down at the table) I just heard something familiar on TV.

Natalia: Yes, they talked about round creatures, about robots, about people... in general, it sounds familiar.

Seryozha:I doubt it because it could be a hoax.

Alina:I see (Eating sandwiches)

Natalya:Well, of course you are adequate and you like to fantasize. Moreover, you would be glad to see kikoriki, Sponge Bob and... What is the name of the game about balance?

Alina:Balan wonderworld. (I got up from the table and ran) I'm going for a walk.

Alina's parents:Fine.

Later, a photo with a black bear with a scar on his left eye was shown on TV.

Leader:There are also rumors that some kind of black bear from the animal simulator game is threatening the whole world (Parents were shocked)

Meanwhile, with Alina.

Alina went out into the yard and walked not far from the house. Later, she received a call from her friends purple panda Kristina, red griffin Julia and red fox Katya. Alina turned on the bell.

Alina:Hi.

Kristina, Julia and Katya:Hi.

Christina:Haven't you heard the news?

Alina:Yes, they were saying something familiar. Like for example something round like kikoriki.

Christina:Yeah, that's for sure. And about the bear?

Alina:What bear?

Katya:The one who takes everything away from people is innocent.

Alina:(She shook her head) I haven't heard of it.

Christina:Okay, let's not bother you.

Kristina, Julia and Katya: Bye. (Turned off)

Alina:Bye. (Put the phone away)

Alina decided to sit on a bench and look at the sky. Everything was calm until the ball rolled to her feet. She looked at him and stood up. Later, a crimson wolf with wings and blue hair with a ponytail came out of the bushes.

Alina:Hello... Isn't that your ball?

Wolf: (Took the ball) Mine. I'm sorry if I bothered you.

Alina:And I have not seen such... What's your name?

???:Daisy!

A purple fox with pink horns came out of the bushes. For Alina, she was Sox From the singing monsters game.

Daisy:Lula, he didn't even fly away.

Lula:But I told you not to kick so hard.

Alina:And you look like Sox.

Lula:Oh, I am. (Looks around) We have to go.

Alina watched them curiously, because she had not seen them before. Although Alina knew that she didn't have to go far, she wanted to know them and followed them. Later, when she stopped, she saw Daisy and Lula sitting at the table while a white axolotl girl was cooking dinner in the house.

The Axolotl:(He leaves the house with three paws) Lunch is ready. (She put the noodles on the table)
