“Come on we’re going to the beach.” Maddie exclaims, throwing a beach towel at you.

“Geez Maddie, warn a girl.” You toss the towel to the side, marking the page in your book, “I don’t want to go to the beach today. I’d rather sit here with my book in the air conditioning.”

She gives you a smirk and leans over the back of the couch, her face at your shoulder, “Drew will be there..” She sing songs.

“Oh that note, I’d love to go to the beach.”

She laughs and shakes her head, “You’re so in love with him.” She says as she follows you to your room.

You pull a bikini out of your drawer and get dressed, “He’s just so damn handsome, Maddie. I mean have you seen him? The hair? The smile? That body?” You let out a small moan. “He’s a hunk!”

She laughs and sits on the bed, “Down girl.” She tosses you your cover up, “Why don’t you ask him out today?”

“Are you crazy! Hell no. He’s got a girlfriend.. and I am definitely not his type.”

“Didn’t I tell you? That wasn’t his girlfriend. They both have the same taste in woman.” She gives a small laugh, “He’s single and you are most definitely his type. You’re stunning! How could he not like you?” She motions to your body.

You playfully roll your eyes, “We’ll see how today goes…”

“Your girl is coming.” Chase smirks as he nudges Drew. Him, Drew, Rudy, JD and Austin were on their way down the walkway toward the beach.

“I don’t have a girl.” Drew says, glancing back at him.

Rudy rolls his eyes, “Oh bull shit.”

“You know who we’re talking about.” JD says.

Drew looks around at the boys, “Uh, I don’t?”

“y/n, man!” Austin puts his hand on Drew’s shoulder.

Just at the mention of your name, his cheeks grow pink, “She’s not my girl.”

“Oh, come on. She so would be if you’d grow a pair and ask her! You’ve had a crush on her since our first reading.” Chase says.

“Yeah but she doesn’t like me back.” Drew defends, “We’re friends. Co-workers.”

“I highly doubt she doesn’t like you back.” JD says, “You forget we’re friends with her too.”

“She’s told you guys she likes me?” Drew stops and turns to face his friends.

“No. She doesn’t have to.” Rudy smirks, “the way she talks about you and the way her eyes light up when you come near tells us everything we need to know.”

The boys picked a quiet spot near the water and set up the pop up tents and games. You, Maddie and Madison arrived not long after.

“I see you girls show up after all the hard work is done.” JD says.

“Well, yeah. We timed it perfectly.” You laugh.

Austin pokes Drew, “There’s your girl.”

Drew groans, “Stop.” Drew pulls the shirt off and hangs it up in the tent.

You look up at the right time to see Drew peeling the shirt off his body. The way his muscles moved…

“Hey, you want to lay out over here?” Maddie asks, pulling you from your daze.

“Yeah. Sounds good.” You follow her to the side of the tent and put your bag down before pulling out a towel from your bag and laying it out next to hers. You slip your cover up off.

Drew’s eyes are on yours as he’s pulling sunscreen from his bag. His eyes glanced over your body. He didn’t know you had a freckle on your back shoulder.

“could you make it more obvious?” JD laughed.

“you’re literally undressing her with your eyes.” Rudy adds.

Drew blushes that he was caught and quickly looks away when you turn around. He hoped he hadn’t gotten caught.

“You’ve gained an audience.” Madison comments quietly after you’d discarded your bathing suit cover.

“Oh, you got his attention girly.” Maddie smirks when she sees Drew looking at you.

You blush and glance over your shoulder to see him turning away, a pink tent on his cheeks. You see the sun screen in his hands and take a deep breath. Be bold. Be confident.

You turn around and start toward him, “Want me to get your back?”

He looks at the bottle in his hands and then back at you, “Yeah if you don’t mind.”

“No, I don’t mind.” You smile, taking the bottle and put a good amount in your hands before lathering his shoulders and back in the sunscreen.

“Drew!” Chase whispers and then motions to his balls, “Grow a pair!”

Drew rolls his eyes and hopes you didn’t see Chase. He glances down at you over his shoulders, “So… have you ever been to this beach?” He winces at his stupidity, seriously Drew? That’s the best you can do?

You let out a soft laugh and shake your head, “No, I haven’t. Have you?”

He nods, “Yeah. Me and the boys come here every once and a while. It’s on the quieter side of town, which we like.”

You nod, “it is quiet…” You finish up his back with sunscreen, “There you go. All done.”

“uh thanks for that.” He gives a smile, taking the sunscreen bottle from your hands and putting it in his bag.

“No problem.” You flash a smile and head back to your towel, sitting next to Maddie.

Drew heads towards the water where the boys are, “have you ever been to this beach?” Austin jokes.

Drew groans, “Stop. I didn’t know what to say.”

“You could have come up with something better than that.” Rudy teases.

“you know, like will you go out with me?” JD adds.

“Let’s play chicken!” Rudy calls out from the water, “Let’s go girls.”

You groan as Madison pulls you up, “It’ll be fun!” You three head toward the water where the boys are standing around.

“Me and Maddie will be on a team against…” Chase looks at you and then Drew, giving him a smirk, “Drew and y/n.”

You and Drew exchange a look, “Y/n probably doesn’t..”

“Let’s do it.” You nod, walking over to him, “It’s just a game of chicken, right?”

He clears his throat and nods, “yeah, sure.”

“Well, do you expect me to grow longer legs to get on your shoulders or are you going to bend down?”

He blushes, “Right!” He goes underwater and moves under your legs and when he stands, you’re on his shoulders. His hands grip your thighs to keep you steady and you grip his hair.

“Shit, easy on the hair.” Drew groans.

You blush and slowly let go, “Sorry, didn’t expect you do that.”

“It’s okay.” He chuckles, “alright we ready to play?”

Maddie smirks at you, looking between you and Drew. You roll your eyes and shake your head.

After the game of chicken, the group decides to head back up to the beach and have a quick lunch. As you’re heading in, Drew calls you back. Time for Drew to grow a pair. “Hey, y/n?”

“Yeah?” You stop and face him.

“Can you stay in with me a little longer? I wanted.. uh to talk to you?” He runs a hand through his hair.

You glance back up at the group and back at him, “yeah sure.” You wade back into the water and over to him, the waves crashing softly into your bodies.

“I’m just going to cut to the chase and get to it.”

You raise an eyebrow at him, “Okay?”

He takes a deep breath, “I like you, y/n. Like, like.”

You can’t help but blush and glance down at your hands, running them over the surface of the water, “I like like you too, Drew.”

His eyes go wide at you, “Wait, seriously?”

You laugh and nod, “yes, seriously.” You step closer to him, holding your hand up to block the sun as you look up at him.

“I uh.. okay.” He chuckles, “Really didn’t expect you to like me back. So, how about a date?”

“A date sounds good. I’d like that.”

“yeah.” He smiles, “me too. How about tonight after our day at the beach? I don’t know if I can wait any longer..”

“Tonight is great.” You smile.

“Kiss her you idiot!” Rudy yells out.

You and Drew both blush. “Just ignore him..”

“Maybe you should listen to his advice.”

Drew takes a step closer to you, “I should huh?” 

You nod, “You should.”

Drew reaches out and cups your cheek, “if you insist.”

The two of you smile into the kiss and laugh when the group erupts in whoops and hollers.

“Aye Drew Starkey does have a pair of balls, ladies and gentlemen!” Chase calls out.

“I told you he liked you!” Maddie calls out to you.

“We’re never going to hear the end of this are we?” You ask, looking up at him.

He shakes his head, laughing, “Nope. Probably not.”

Bronco: Started jamming with John on Rocksmith.  He pointed out that there was a multiplayer mode, so I ordered another cable and, lo and behold, we were both able to play.  He's starting to learn the bass while I continue to tinker with the guitar.  Pretty awesome to jam out to some Alice in Chains or some Mastodon with my 10-year-old son. Only two more years and he should be able to tour with Korn!

How It Went: Started the vinyl collection.  Went record store diving with John at the beginning of the year.  He picked up Ride the Lightening.  And I've got an original pressing of Back in Black on its way, didn't make it in time for Christmas.  I decided on purchasing that album, then a day or two later John said, "I think I know what I want my next record to be...Back in Black".  Sad it didn't make it in time, but psyched I was able to predict it.

Not Today by BTS ⟶ Do I need to explain myself on this one? Other than I’m coming to it something like four months late. I adore the epic sound of this particular song, and there’s just something in the rap line’s execution that gets me pumped. Not like BTS usually doesn’t have that effect on me, but... I can’t explain why with Not Today.

Wonderland by Caravan Palace ⟶ WARNING: this video is kind of graphic and definitely odd. Swinging around completely, here we have less of a mainstream sound: this is Caravan Palace, a French outfit who are one of the big names in electro-swing. It’s pretty much a blend between Jazz and house/electro, and I’m totally in love with it. If it vibes with you too, I also suggest you check out Lone Digger (WARNING: This video is very bloody) and Dramophone. 

U & I by Royal Pirates ⟶ I will forever thank the lovely miss Fiona @prettyprettykino for introducing me to this song TT I really really really like it! And I had never heard of Royal Pirates before, but I’m getting into their discography and I love it all. On another side note, I really feel for this band--apparently the bass player was in an accident and lost the use of one of his hands. As a musician that is a nightmare and admittedly one of my own greatest fears!

Catch Me If You Can (feat. Melanie Fontana) by John Dahlbäck ⟶ I simply can’t stop listening to this track, ugh. It’s nice and boppy and infinitely singable. Melanie Fontana’s voice is perfect. Also I’m becoming a pretty huge John Dahlbäck fan, ever since he released Bapalapa he’s had a string of really good songs. (this slot was once occupied by Blast from the Past by Florian Picasso, another great [though somewhat odd] track, but I booted it at the last moment)

Queen by Monsta X ⟶ OK I’VE FALLEN IN LOVE WITH THIS SONG AND MY BOYS ALL OVER AGAIN. This track literally has it all--really amazing raps, an addictive backbeat, THAT MELODY DAMN, a catchy hook, HIGH VOCAL HARMONY NEAR THE END--what else could you really ask for???? I’ve been listening to it in the car going EVERYWHERE and dkljsdklajf;f. Ok. I’m going to go cry in a corner for a little while. To cleanse my soul and allow you to get my screaming out of your ears.

Saint by Julian Jordan ⟶ I’ll be frank, I’ve always considered Julian Jordan to be a so-so DJ. He was signed with Spinnin’, I remember listening to some of his stuff like All Night and Angels x Demons and not being too impressed. However now he’s with Armada, I was pretty surprised to see him on their label, and I clicked on the video and found myself in for a surprise. He has a winner with this one; the drop is so hard and I absolutely love it. The vocals in the back have a chance to be cheesy but they’re not. 

BOMB (feat. San E) by Ravi ⟶ This is another one that had to grow on me and I’m so glad it did because whenever I need to feel hyped, I’m like ‘Yep it’s time for BOMB, queue it up my man’. Ummm I absolutely adore Ravi as a rapper. I think I’d recognize his voice nearly anywhere, though I can name a couple people who sound like him. Also: I approve of his directing.

Showdown by Ummet Ozcan ⟶ (As a forewarning, there is language in this one). Really, to be honest, this particular track reminds me of two things: older house, and Skrillex’s Recess album. This, coming from the king of melodic house. From Spacecats (THIS VIDEO IS HELLA CUTE GUYS but don’t watch if you can’t do strobe lights. I want you to be safe k) to SMASH! to his remix of Dimitri Vegas and Like Mike’s Stay a While, Ummet Ozcan never ever ever ever has failed me when I’m looking for a good track. Even with his new stuff, which is kind of moving away from his standard straight bigroom house, I really admire his way with melody. Also he is so handsome stahp him

Walk Away (feat. Kaptan) by LVNDSCAPE ⟶ I adore story in song and this is for sure one of the most beautiful I’ve heard in a long time. It’s about love and longing and dealing with loss, regret, etc. It tears at my heart frankly. The energetic beat really contrasts with the mournful singing by Kaptan. I’m in love aaahhhh ❤︎

Does anyone remember this article?  I went looking for it again after wondering if Jordyn was the only Duggar child without a nickname (turns out JD never had one either, and I don’t think we’ve ever heard Jackson’s name shortened, come to think of it), and damn, it seemed innocuous enough in 2004 (which was when I first read it, I think), but now it seems a little less so.

There's not a strand out of place on his Ken-doll hair. This is remarkable not only because there are 13 children playing at his feet--his 13 children--but also because he's a state representative waging a long-shot campaign for the U.S. Senate.

There are people more stressed after a trip to the grocery store than this man seemingly is on his worst day. "I just feel like I'm doing what I'm supposed to be doing," says Jim Bob, a 36-year-old lifelong Springdale resident who has been known as a one-issue politician--a conservative Republican who cares only about stopping abortions. Now, Jim Bob is known as the candidate with enough moxie--or perhaps not enough sense--to challenge incumbent Sen. Tim Hutchinson in the Republican primary.   Those 13 children, born during Jim Bob and Michelle Duggar's 17 years of marriage, are family values personified. They're a highly visible asset facing a GOP incumbent viewed as politically vulnerable in 2002 because of his divorce and second marriage to a former Senate staff member.

"We're going to do it together as a family," Michelle, 34, says of the race. "It's not just, 'Daddy's doing this.' ... We stick together like glue." The "we" includes Joshua, "Joshy," 13; twins Jana, "Banana," and John-David, 11; Jill "Muffin," 10; Jessa, "Blessa," 8; Jinger, "Jin-Jin," 7; Joseph, "Joe-Joe," 6; Josiah, "Siah," 5; Joy-Anna, "Jogees," 3; "The Dynamic Duo" twins Jedidiah and Jeremiah, 2; Jason, "Jay Bird," 1, who with "The Dynamic Duo" forms "The Three Musketeers"; and James, 8 weeks. Jim Bob regularly brings his children, whom Michelle home schools, to Little Rock and the state Capitol where his eldest, Joshua, is known as "Governor." "God put us in there," the Baptist says of winning his first political race in 1999. "We just knew this is the way our family is going to serve our community." Jim Bob wasn't involved in politics until Bill Clinton was elected president in 1992. "I saw how things were," he says. He supported Republican Fay Boozman's failed U.S. Senate race. During this time, he went to a Little Rock rally to back a state ban on partial-birth abortions. Thousands of people showed for the protest, but Jim Bob says, "Still, a lot of those senators and representatives did not vote the right way." So Jim Bob prayed. "I prayed, 'Lord, I would be willing to run for office,' " he says. "I'd vote the right way." Jim Bob didn't run the next election cycle because the timing didn't feel right. But he ran and won in 1999, when he temporarily moved his family to Little Rock for the legislative session and sold all his businesses to concentrate on politics. He has had various jobs through the years. Michelle jokes that she read a list of the Top 10 worst jobs, and her husband has had seven of them, including insurance salesman and used car salesman. The Duggars had a turning point in their lives 11 years ago when Jim Bob attended a meeting that discussed financial freedom through living a debt-free life. Michelle eventually attended the meeting, too, and now she and Jim Bob conduct the seminars out of their home. By getting out of debt and not purchasing anything unless they have cash, the Duggars have saved enough to make investments in such things as rental and commercial property. Their investments have done so well that Jim Bob doesn't have to work a full-time job. "I've learned self control and also a lot about construction," he says. And, "All these different businesses that I've been in have really given me a broad perspective of what the average person has to go through every day." Because of his work situation, says Mary Duggar, Jim Bob's mother, "He probably gets to spend more time with his family than most men do." "I'm very careful on what events I go to," Jim Bob says. "I just try to prioritize." Back when the Duggars only had a few kids and were living at a home on their car lot, Jim Bob was the victim of an armed robbery during which he was bound and gagged. The incident helps him keep things in perspective today. "I feel like I'm living on overtime," Jim Bob says, "so politics is nothing." DEAR GOD Politics really does seem like nothing compared to a house almost literally full of children. Just ask Michelle. She had a desperate, blunt conversation with God one day while standing amid piles of laundry--and this is back when she only had seven children. "I love 'em, but I think I'm going to go crazy!" she cried to the Lord. "It was a sacrifice to praise God at that point," Michelle says. But she did. She started singing a song to honor him. Within a week, the children's piano teacher, Ruth Anita Anderson, whom they've come to call Nana, made an offer to help with the laundry. "God just provided Nana," Michelle says. Her laundry room today is equipped with two washers and three dryers. There are bins and bins of presorted clothes with labels clearly addressing what clothes are where. Two deep freezers also happen to be in the room, which is just off the kitchen. Off the other side of the laundry room is the family's closet--the only closet used for clothes in the entire house. Both for space and convenience, the family keeps its clothes together. They don't use dressers because there's more room without them. And the bedroom closets--the children share three bedrooms and lots of bunk beds--are used for storage for such things as each child's violin. "We are working on a family orchestra," Michelle says. " 'Twinkle Twinkle Little Star' is about as far as we get." It's amazing to watch 15 people in action in a 2,450-square-foot house. Eight recliners fill the front family room, but there are no coffee tables to clutter anyone's path. Michelle has packed away her knickknacks until the children are grown and gone. Family photographs and other pictures on the walls are some of the house's only decorations. A photocopier adorns the end table next to Michelle and Jim Bob's bed, and there's a file cabinet in her closet. The one-family closet works well in part since the kids are constantly growing and clothes are passed from one child to the next. Michelle and the children also make many of their own clothes and buy items from Goodwill. Jim Bob says he probably spends less for clothes on his 13 children than do parents of two children. "Now, food's a different matter," he says. The Duggars spend an average of $1,000 a month on food. Michelle goes to the grocery store every other day to pick up three gallons of milk and fresh fruits and vegetables instead of making one big weekly trip with four or five grocery carts. "I don't like to do it that way," she says. "It just almost overwhelms the poor cashier when we come through." If it takes this many special arrangements and this much preparation simply to live, why would Jim Bob complicate things by joining the Legislature and, now, running for the Senate? Doesn't he have enough to handle at home? "Our family is our hobby," says Jim Bob, who doesn't have pursuits like golf or tennis. Though when the family does play sports, Jill says, "We have a whole team here." "Two teams," Jim Bob says. WATCHING HER WORDS The former Michelle Ruark has an easygoing openness and friendliness that extends to each person she meets. As she and Jim Bob sit on the plastic blue auditorium seats that serve as the family's dining room chairs, she rests her hand on her husband's leg and joyfully proclaims her beliefs in God, Jim Bob and the sanctity of family. Strains of "Amazing Grace" can be heard from the next room where her children practice piano and violin in one of the girls' rooms that doubles as a music room. But Jim Bob doesn't for one second forget that a reporter is in the room, and he guards what both he and his wife say. When talk turns to his primary race against Hutchinson, Michelle starts telling of the day Jim Bob decided to challenge him. Jim Bob quickly lets her know there's one part of the story they won't be telling. Michelle questions his decision, not seeing a problem with sharing it. But then, following a few brief whispers, she smiles and simply goes on with the part she can tell. Michelle was headed out the door to a prayer meeting when Jim Bob brought up the idea of running for Senate. He said he felt pressed to run and asked Michelle to pray about it. "I just felt like I should run," Jim Bob says. "It's not because I am so smart." Jim Bob supported Hutchinson in past races. He says his decision to run now has nothing to do with Hutchinson's martial troubles, including his remarriage after divorcing his wife of 29 years. Jim Bob doesn't even bring up the issues, which have kept the state--specifically past and present Hutchinson supporters in Northwest Arkansas--talking. State Rep. Jeremy Hutchinson, Tim Hutchinson's son, practically was Jim Bob's legislative seatmate when Jim Bob made his Senate decision. "It's nothing against you or your family," Jim Bob told the younger Hutchinson, who wasn't happy but listened. Next, Jim Bob called Tim Hutchinson. "I hope you can relate to this a little bit having been a pastor before, but I feel called to run for a seat--your seat," Jim Bob told him. "I'm just gonna run a clean race," Jim Bob continued. "Are you committed to running a clean race?  "And he said, 'Oh, yeah,' [and] kind of laughed," Jim Bob says. Hutchinson didn't return a call for comment for this story. An editorial cartoon that ran in the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette when Jim Bob announced his candidacy hangs on the Duggars' dining room wall. It shows Jim Bob as a tiny Republican elephant kicking a huge boxer, who represents Hutchinson. The caption reads: "The first challenge came from unexpected quarters." "We're not in it to kick [anyone]," Joshua says in defense of his father. "We're in the race because we feel God has told us to run. We're not against any of our opponents in any way." A HOW-TO GUIDE The Duggars consider the Bible something of an owner's manual, a how-to for life. They sometimes employ "time outs" to discipline their children, but they also think the Bible teaches parents to spank and even instructs on how to do it. The children and Michelle recite a new Bible passage each morning, and they have actions to go with the words. For instance, when reciting Exodus 20, verses 1-17, the children run a finger along their necks in a quick swipe, as if killing themselves, as they read the passage, "Thou shall not kill." Religion wasn't always the focal point of Michelle's life. She was 15 and had been living in Springdale since age 4 when a friend talked to her about a movie that told of the end of the world. Michelle wanted to make sure she'd be ready, so when her friend invited her to a revival, she eagerly went. Jim Bob and a friend were making visitations to reach out to potential church members, and his friend said that a girl named Michelle had just committed her life to God. He also mentioned that she was a cheerleader. "Well, let's go see her!" Jim Bob said. They were married 2 1/2 years later. Jim Bob, who has only one sibling, and Michelle, who is the youngest of seven, didn't know how many children they wanted to have. And they didn't have any for the first four years they were married. They even used birth control until they decided the pills weren't right for them. They decided having children was for God to control--not them. "I would like to have more," Michelle says. They don't always agree, but Jim Bob and Michelle try to resolve disputes before the sun goes down each night, which they say the Bible instructs them to do. Michelle also believes she is to be submissive to Jim Bob, which she says does not mean he treats her like a doormat but that he is the head of the household. "We don't have a perfect marriage," Jim Bob says. "There's not a perfect marriage out there." Nor are there perfect children. But the Duggar children, at least on the surface, appear to come awfully close. THE BUDDY SYSTEM The older Duggar children all take care of the younger ones through a buddy system. "The little guys just think the big guys hung the moon," Michelle says. Without being asked, the older children will get the younger ones' meals or change their diapers. Each child has particular chores, like taking out the trash, that he or she automatically does. Josh is the family grill expert and makes dinner so his parents are free to visit. "You're my buddy," Jim Bob smiles and says to Michelle as he brings her lunch. Joshua leads an eloquent, heartfelt prayer while everyone joins hands around the table to pray. All the children seem to be more articulate than others their ages. When 1-year-old Jason falls to the floor and starts throwing a fit, one glance from his mother and quick wag of her finger ends the incident almost even before it begins. His training should be through by age 12, when Jim Bob and Michelle hope all their children are trained well enough to stand alone. "I don't want them to be just good kids," Michelle says. "I want it to go deeper than that." Michelle says the desire to see her children be successful, "That's what keeps me going." Joshua was 5 when the Duggars made the decision to home school their children. They clearly are careful about their children's outside influences. Though the family owns a TV, it's rarely on, even when their father makes an appearance. "There's a lot of attitudes and actions that we just don't want the children to imitate," Jim Bob says. When a proposal he made in the state Legislature wound up on Politically Incorrect, Jim Bob had to call a friend to tape it for him. Jim Bob and Michelle are willing to share their lives with readers because they want to encourage them, through their story, to turn to God. But even by standards of an average Christian household, the Duggars are extreme. The girls exclusively wear dresses and skirts. The children wear wet suits instead of bathing suits when they go in the water in order to be modest. "When they get a little older, they'll have to make the decision on what they want to do," Jim Bob says of wearing swimsuits. For now, the kids don't appear to mind. Instead of recognizing that they're different, they seem to recognize how lucky they are in some ways. "You always have someone to play with," Jill says. "And there are lots of birthdays." When the Duggars went on vacation in 1999 to Washington, D.C., they got attention wherever they went. They walked in a single-file line through the city's sidewalks so they wouldn't take up too much space. Each child wore the same color, and Joshua brought up the rear to make sure everyone stayed together. His parents couldn't understand why he kept stopping to talk to strangers. "I've had several people ask me when we go out, 'Now, what school is this?' or, 'What organization are you in?' " Joshua says. "Somebody's always asking us something." The family can all travel together in one vehicle because the family car happens to be a church van, which sports a Bush bumper sticker and another one that says: "Evolution is a Lie: Save America Please." When the Duggars dine out as a family--and they can tell you exactly which restaurants have children's specials on which nights of the week in the Springdale area--heads turn when they walk in. Waiters literally stop and stare. "We do make a bit of a commotion when we enter a place," Michelle says. "We're a little hard to forget." A majority of the children sit at one table, with the rest at the adult table. Jim Bob and Michelle hardly have to even bother turning around during the meal to check on anyone's behavior. "The buddies will usually inform us if we need to help with somebody," Michelle says. Since the birth of 8-week-old James, Michelle has had a particularly difficult time breast-feeding. Every two hours she's in considerable pain, but it doesn't seem to affect her countenance. During a family portrait, Jim Bob gives Michelle a playful kiss, and she looks at him with the love and happiness of a newlywed--rather than a woman who has been married for 17 years, is home schooling 12 children, breast-feeding a 13th and is helping launch a Senate campaign. A WINNABLE RACE? She's in a minority, but Michelle confidently declares, "It is a winnable race." Not that the family is depending on it. "If we win, wonderful," Michelle says. "If we lose, wonderful. We just wanna serve." Speculation is Jim Bob won't get the chance this time. One poll shows he has only 4-percent name recognition in the state. He points out, though, that fellow Republican and former Gov. Frank White likes to say he only had 3-percent recognition when he went on to beat Clinton. Marty Ryall, executive director of the Arkansas Republican Party, thinks differently. "Tim's campaign would have to implode," he says of Jim Bob's chances. "There's probably a handful of people ... that may still be angry with Tim," Ryall says. "Tim has made amends with most of those. I know he's visited with a lot of them." Ryall tried to talk Duggar into running for another position--any of five open races across the state. He "just encouraged him to lower his sites a little," Ryall says. "He told me he was determined to run for the U.S. Senate. ... He's really doing what he feels like he is compelled to do." Jim Bob accepts campaign contributions, but he doesn't solicit them. Hutchinson has $1.5 million in his coffers. Jim Bob has $250,000--all his own money. "People with money are going to support the incumbent," Jim Bob says. "They just don't want to burn a bridge with the incumbent." Some of those same people have assured Jim Bob that he'll get their support should he defeat Hutchinson, he says. Jim Bob has been told it takes a minimum of $500,000 to win the seat. "Money isn't everything," his mother says reassuringly. Jim Bob argues that a third of the primary is in conservative Benton County, where he thinks he'll have a chance of competing strongly. If he beats Hutchinson in the primary, he'll face Attorney General Mark Pryor in the general election. Pryor, of course, starts the race with extra name recognition thanks to his father, former U.S. Sen. David Pryor. "Jim Bob's at peace about it," Mary Duggar says of whether her son wins or loses. "I know everybody believes this is totally impossible, a total long shot," Jim Bob says. But he has 14 extremely strong supporters living in his own house, even if only one of them can vote.

The first big meme of 2017 has arrived and it's List the Top 10 Albums That Influenced You As A Teenager. This was an almost impossible selection for me, so I gave myself some additional ground rules: these albums all came out when I was an actual teenager (13-19, to be precise) and I promptly wore them out something serious. These are also albums that I continue to listen to and enjoy to this day. I also took the *complete* album into consideration—almost all of these are total listen-throughs for me, even though there may be some other songs and singles that had more of an impact on my impressionable teenage brain. 

 So, here's the list, how old I was when they came out, and some thoughts, in no particular order: 

Sleater-Kinney - One Beat (2002) I was: 17, in between high school and college This was the first SK album I ever bought, and I'm not ashamed to admit that. It was on one of those listening stations at the local music store (RIP ear-x-tacy) and the opener with its urgent drums, spindly guitars and fantastic vocals and harmonies drew me in immediately. Apparently One Beat was their "political" album and that makes sense, but the infectiously jangly "Oh!" remains one of my all-time favorite songs to this day, and though I've listened to the rest of their catalogue, One Beat remains my favorite to this day. 

Christina Aguilera - Stripped (2002) I was: 18, college freshman Fun fact: I was one of those angsty teens who mocked pop music while hiding my secret shame at loving every bubblegum beat and boy band dance jam. When you're a teenager, you have to keep up appearances—I knew I wasn't one of the popular types, so I tried to be a "rock" kid and turned up my nose at what turned out to be some really great songs. My dear Ms. Aguilera changed all of that for me. I had already loved her first singles (You cannot deny "Genie in a Bottle," so don't even try) and her complete ownage of "Lady Marmalade" for the Moulin Rouge soundtrack, so when Stripped came out in all its sexual and bold yet vulnerable and honest glory, I found the soundtrack to the twilight of my teenage years. Everyone knows about "Dirrty," "Beautiful," "Can't Hold Us Down," and "Fighter," but have you heard the soft sensuality of "Lovin' Me for Me"? What about the deep piano soul of "Underappreciated"? This album is packed with both gems and jams, and remains relevant to this very day.

Eve - Scorpion (2001) I was: 16, high school junior I came late to the rap game, since I wasn’t allowed to buy CDs with parental advisory stickers until my senior year of high school, so I've made a lot of progress, but I didn't get the kind of hip-hop education most of my friends have besides what made it onto the radio at the time. This was post-Tupac/Biggie but pre-50 Cent, and the airwaves were mostly dominated by the aforementioned pop and its bad cousin pop-punk. So when Eve's basically flawless "Let Me Blow Ya Mind" featuring Gwen Stefani's damn near perfect hook and what I would learn is a quintessentially Dr. Dre beat dropped, all slinky and sexy and sassy, I was beyond obsessed. The rest of the album is on point, too: "Who's That Girl?" became an anthem for me because I could easily sing back "LEIGH's that girl!" (la la la-la, la la la-la); "Gangsta Bitch" was a sick collab with Trina and Da Brat; and "Got What You Need" is a great call-and-response banger courtesy of Swizz Beats and some other lesser Ruff Ryders rapper who is probably mad that Eve destroyed him on this track and probably in real life as well. 

The Kills - Keep on Your Mean Side (2003) I was: 19, college sophomore Somehow I got this CD for Christmas? I don’t remember how or where I heard about it, but this album for me is the perfect combination of sexy and scuzzy with raw guitars and sparse, swampy beats and endless, unbearable chemistry between VV (Allison Mosshart) and Hotel (Jamie Hince) that continues to this day. Fifteen years, four albums, and multiple side projects (and one very high-profile marriage and divorce) later, and I am one of those fans who firmly stans for them to live happily ever after in musical harmony and continuing rock n’ roll cuteness. They’re just SO PERFECT TOGETHER, OKAY? Anyway, this album is great, and you should listen to it if you haven’t already.

Yeah Yeah Yeahs (2001) I was: 16, soon-to-be high school senior If I had to pick ONE album that was the most influential to me of all of these, it would be Yeah Yeah Yeahs’ seminal self-titled EP. It dropped right before my senior year of high school, when I was finally starting to figure myself out a little bit and realizing that I liked loud music by loud ladies that I could dance to and scream along to, regardless of genre or format. The Strokes, The Hives, The White Stripes, and all their ilk were kicking off a new rock revolution, but there were so few ladies out there making as much noise as I needed them to. Karen O was not a great singer, but the way she whispered and groaned and wailed over the wall of sound that Nick and Brian created with just a guitar and a drumset was revelatory to me, especially after I got to see them live a few years later, smushed up against the stage at the Southgate House and rapt as the speakers pounded in my chest and Karen sprayed beer and spit on all of us, and she leaned down at the beginning of “Our Time” at the end of their set, when I was exhausted and enthralled, put the mic in front my face and together we crooned “To break on through-ooh!” YYYs continued to put out some great music and evolve their sound not-so-greatly in the following years (sorry, y’all, but Mosquito was not good), but nothing seared itself so firmly on my psyche as Karen and me covered in sweat, singing what should have been an anthem for the pre-1990 Millennials: “It’s the year to be hated / so glad that we made it.” If that doesn’t sum up everything everyone’s ever said about those of us born between 1980 and 1999, I don’t know what does.

Daft Punk - Discovery (2001) I was: 16, high school junior If there’s another album I had to name as one of my top all-timers, completely different but still equally influential, it’s Daft Punk’s Discovery. Daft Punk allowed me to embrace my love of dance and electronic music, and built a perfect unifying force among me and my friends, providing that anthem we’d been waiting for with “One More Time,” a song that still fills me with joy every time those first few beats fade in and I can’t help but smile when it drops and that surprisingly, beautifully warm vocoder voice comes in over the spaces between. The rest of the album is literally iconic as well, and really cemented Daft Punk as the arbiters of dance parties for everyone, all-inclusive, delirious and endlessly entertaining and ultimately joyful.

Le Tigre (1999) I was: 15, high school sophomore I’ll admit it: I missed the Riot Grrl movement by several years, so Kathleen Hanna and Le Tigre were a new experience for me. I loved the edge and the anger in her voice, the fuzzy throwback sound and sampling that made it seem like something I could do if I just tried harder and wasn’t so shy and scared to raise a ruckus and my voice. One thing I’ve noticed about so many of these albums and groups is that I really liked stripped-down music with big sounds created by small groups of people: duos and trios make up the bulk of my favorite albums during this era. I got to see them live as well, when JD Sampson joined the lineup and became my introduction to confusingly, distractingly sexy nonbinary people, and it was at the height of the Bush era, in the middle of my college years, and while I didn’t feel the exhilaration of singing with Karen O, I felt the freedom of dancing my ass off and screaming until my lungs my ached, unafraid of who I might bump into with my unruly booty, unafraid of who I might offend with my burgeoning baby feminism. I was sad when they stopped recording and disappointed at their recent lackluster Hillary Clinton track near the end of the election cycle, but I’ve loved the resurgence of The Julie Ruin and the ongoing reinvention and determination Hanna continues to project in the face of so much bullshittery that permeates our world and culture today. 

The Mars Volta - De-Loused in the Comatorium (2003) I was: 19, college sophomore At the Drive-In was another band I missed out on the first time around, but The Mars Volta popped up in my circles of smartass potheads once I started to find my tiny tribe of people in the rural Kentucky college town in which I lived for four years. I’ve always loved a man unafraid to belt out an anthem, and Cedric Bixler-Zavala golden throat soared over Omar Rodruigez-Lopez’s prog-rock symphonies and movements, and it sounded just as good when I was stone cold sober as when I was self-medicating in the name of social acceptance and anxiety avoidance. I will forever associate them with giant spliffs and endless laughter, letting the discordant sounds wash over me and and Cedric’s voice burn through me, as well as making myself a zombie prom queen Halloween costume under a waxing moon after a bad breakup, working some kind of dark magic to transform myself into someone no one would recognize, even if only for a night. There was always a sadness that permeated these songs, something that got lost in their later, more esoteric albums I could never get into, and there was something on this album that made me feel okay with being sad, allowing myself to feel my feelings that I tried to keep hidden for far too long.

Ludacris - Back for the First Time (2000) I was: 16, high school junior Again, the most rap I had ever really listened to before high school was MC Hammer and Will Smith’s squeaky clean radio-rap, so Luda’s debut was a major eye-opener for overly-sheltered white suburban me. "What's Your Fantasy" and "Phat Rabbit" were titillating, sure, but also fantastic rhymes and beats, and "Stick 'Em Up Bitch" and "1st & 10" were darkly hilarious under their gangsta veneers. "Southern Hospitality" brought bravado to what could have just been another Neptunes beat, and throughout it all, Luda's flow was so sick and smooth, so full of wit and wordplay and unashamed sexuality, and I loved to blare it driving through my parents’ neighborhood, even after the speakers in my car blew out and sounded like nothing but surly vibrations as I dawdled on my way home for my 11pm curfew. If I had to come in at what I considered an unfair, oppressive time, I was going to wake up everyone else in the process. Yes, I was a not-so-secret dick when I was a teenager–weren’t we all? Side note: I'm kind of sad Shawnna never made it all that big, and this video is the absolute perfect time capsule of the year 2000.

Peaches - The Teaches of Peaches (2000) I was: 16, high school senior I’ll also admit this: I fucking loved “electroclash.” That amalgamation of punk and dance music was everything to me, the perfect blend of rock guitars and big beats that enmeshed everything teenage me loved about being loud and dancing like everyone was watching and not giving a fuck either way. Peaches was gross and vulgar and rapped about sex with no emotion but pleasure, and she got even dirtier as the years went on, but The Teaches of Peaches was seminal and shocking and just the kind of thing a slightly crazed and endlessly awkward, horny teenage girl needed to hear to start embracing my own weird sexuality and rampaging hormones and confused feelings, instead of keeping them locked away and shameful like I was supposed to. Everyone knows and loves "Fuck the Pain Away," thanks to its cameo appearances in Lost in Translation and the Jackass movies, but "Lovertits" was always my personal favorite from this album. The moment that breakdown takes over is pure brilliance and one of my favorite moments in any song ever. Peaches dancing in front of the mirror in this video is teenage me, always and forever, singing to myself when no one was looking and finally finding away to sing to myself in public, out loud, and not caring who heard me. I'm still working on it, but I think these albums did a lot to push me in the direction I've gone and to get me where I am now as a feminist and a lover of music and dance parties for life.
