So I may have watched the entire first season of The Ancient Magus’ Bride as well as both OVAs in a single day. The willingness to tackle dark topics like human trafficking, suicide, child neglect on both a personal and institutional level, and so many others makes this a captivating watch that’s unlike any fantasy story I’ve experienced before.
It’s also proof that even if the core premise is wildly uncomfortable on paper, like a master/slave romance with an age gap measured in centuries, execution is everything, and leaning into that discomfort can allow you to tell stories in ways that you couldn’t if being less problematic is all you’re concerned about.
Really looking forward to catching up on season two.

I haven’t stopped thinking about the fact that the most iconic imagery of Utena, the rose emblem, the Rose Bride Dress, Utena drawing the sword from Anthy’s chest, hell, most of Utena and Anthy’s relationship, are all images of abuse, of toxicity and deceit and ignorance. Beautiful ignorance, sure, but we fall in love with Utena’s obliviousness and have to decipher what healthy love there is on our own as viewers. All while the striking images of harm linger in our heads.

I've read The Princess Bride more times than any book other than maybe Hogfather and it is SO jarring to watch the movie and see 100 pages go by in 2 minutes.
Wheeee they figure out they're in love and then literally 60 seconds later she's been kidnapped by Vizzini's gang. SO MUCH storytelling is lost in this adaptation. My kingdom for an unabridged audiobook.

"Oh yes, giving shots is never the easiest part of my job," June chuckled, endeared by Emily's recounting of her childhood games of playing doctor with her toys-she remembered doing the same when she was little with her own stuffed animals and dolls. "I have a number of little tricks to help the kids feel a little less scared, such as asking them to tell me about their favorite toys or counting out the ceiling tiles, but it can still be a challenge."
"Randall used to be a pretty finicky lad when it came to getting shots," Wilhelm commented with a sly smile, adding, "He used to try and hide under the table when it came time for it, and he wouldn't hardly come out for anything. Even having his teddy bear friend Knox with him only helped a little bit; he just had someone to hide with!"
"Oh, Pa..." Randall blushed in embarrassment, putting a hand over his face with a little smile, at which his father replied, "It's true! It took a lot of convincing, but he got there eventually-and besides, once he got the sticker Junie hands out to the lads and lassies she sees, he forgot all about being afraid of the needle!"
June laughed softly at her son's bashful look in response to this, before turning back to Emily, quite touched by her kind words as she said affably, "You're too kind, dear girl, too kind!" She seldom got praise (outside of her family, at least) for her work, and so her words were a very pleasant surprise.
