hearing you do research into singaporean culture for m&m makes me so excited! i have heritage there and almost never see southeast asia represented in things i read/watch
Hi anon!
I've been to Singapore! It's a beautiful country, and one of the best places to celebrate Lunar New Year :D I don't know if I'll ever be able to travel like that again with Covid, but if I can, Singapore is actually really high on the list of places we have to get back to soon.
Perth, Western Australia is actually closer to Bali, Indonesia than it is to Sydney, Australia (and it's about the same distance to Singapore as it is to Sydney), and as a result, we actually have a huge proportion of SE Asian folk who live here, and a lot of SE cuisine and culture we can access that folks have brought over with them. So the foods that Kadek mentions in Falling Falling Stars are all foods I'm familiar with. Likewise, it's very common for many Perth folk to fly to Bali and nearby regions for holidays and work, because it's a closer flight than, well, other places in our own country. I have a friend who's working in Singapore right now, and I'm not sure if he's coming back! He loves it too much. (Though not the driving, so much dsalkjfsa).
Due to a combination of having some great friends who have SE Asian heritage and being able to share dinner with their families and hobbies and stay over as a kid etc, and just finding other places and foods interesting, and enjoying learning new things, it's been fun to include more of that in my writing in ways that are hopefully respectful. It also just feels natural in the sense that... for me, in my part of the world, we have more to do with say, Southeast Asia than we do many other cultures, and it's annoying that when people represent, god, 'eastern cultures' in fantasy, it's always like... idk, samey, if it's done by white authors. I'm hoping to avoid that, and not do it terribly. I'm definitely more focusing on Indonesia, and then aspects of Singapore as well, including how cosmopolitan and multicultural it is, while still having a strong sense of identity and place.
Fun fact, I share a timezone with Singapore, but I don't share a timezone with any other state in Australia.
Australia is big and weird.

How do I get around with designing a high school? Mainly the buildings but is there anything about the social setting that I should take note of?
Tex: My knee-jerk reaction is to go “well, just look at a high school”, but I realize that’s not a helpful answer, particularly when you get into the details of a thing.
It helps to have an orientation point, and for the purposes of architecture, that means the goal of your design. Sometimes high schools are a single building, sometimes they’re multiple buildings. Some have parking lots or garages, some do not.
A lot of this depends on the era and region your school is built in. High schools are a relatively modern inventions, as is standardized education for minors - particularly for all social classes. This has an impact on how conservatively or lavishly the campus is budgeted, and what sort of materials they use.
One thing to keep in mind is that there are different types of high schools. As it is the last stage of, in modern terms, state-mandated education for minors, quite a lot of countries switch gears compared to the schools for younger children's by focusing on training these students for jobs. This can mean anything from a preparatory school to a vocational school to the plethora of other names secondary school acquires according to country.
Because of this, figuring out how each cohort is divided (e.g. incoming year to exiting year of students), along with any particular particular programs (e.g. the IB Diploma Programme or the Advanced Placement program). Buildings may be divided up by activity level (lecture-based courses versus sports/physical education), by subject matter (STEM versus humanities), or by grade (each year cohort in its own building).
This is of course dependant upon how much land a school has funds to purchase - or has been allocated by the government - as well as such issues as number of competing schools in a given zone or academic concentration (e.g. vocational or preparatory schools), which inherently eats into the budget regarding issues such as materials, building size, and miscellaneous amenities (such as bathrooms and cafeterias).
Social setting depends on budget. With a good budget, a school can get things like grounds with amenities (e.g. fountains, benches, and other architectural elements for social gatherings), large indoor areas dedicated to socialization (e.g. libraries, common rooms, cafeterias with indoor seating, exercise rooms). With a poor budget, land outside the buildings proper may be relegated to a dirt lot or paved area for parking, possibly with some benches/tables or some shaded areas where room permits.
An expected high volume of students, generally, nets more income for the school regardless of where the money comes from. The more students there are, particularly when planning for building is still being developed, the more accommodations are made outside of mandated minimums (e.g. handicap accessibility, general volume-to-size ratios). If there’s an unexpected increase in student enrollments, particularly for a sustained time, this would put a strain on the campus and could cause general disrepair due to the increased wear and tear caused by student enrolling over maximum designed capacity.
There’s a myriad of other concerns for designing a school at any level, because it comes with its own particular complications of being (ideally) a hybridized space defined by multiple focuses. I’ll list out some links for you to read, but this is unfortunately a many-pronged subject that would benefit from more specific questions.

Feral: A high school is not at all what television would have you believe, but TV Tropes might still be able to give you a basic overview. Of course, the US isn’t the only place with high schools (or whatever equivalent terminology is most applicable), so you’ll want to be more specific when researching. Depending on where in a given country your high school is set, they can vary wildly from each other. For example, in the US, high schools have general federal and state mandates but are actually administered on a county level, called school systems or districts, and depending on the efficacy of that administration, which changes with the elected or appointed officials in charge, and the relative wealth of the residents paying taxes into that system, the quality of the actual education as well as the building standards can be different even between systems right next to each other.
There’s a joke on The Good Place that Jason’s high school was a trailer park, and that’s actually a thing, at least in the South. Where there isn’t a lot of funding or there’s been a population boom that the school district cannot accommodate all at once (as was the case with my high school), students might very well go to class in what amounts to a trailer park behind the main school building, which could be in various states of repair. These are usually supposed to be temporary measures while funds are being raised or new buildings or schools are being built, but I just checked a satellite image of my alma mater, which was opened in 1997 (originally built for about 1,000 students), put trailers out back in 1999, and completed a second building in 2006 (at which point I think there were close to 2,000), and there are still like 6 trailer classrooms out back.
And that’s something you can definitely do as well. Decide where you want to set your story or base your setting on and pull up satellite images of the schools in that area.
The actual layout of your school building can impact how students socialize. For example, my cafeteria was obviously way too small for the student body, even with like five or six possible lunch periods you might be assigned to, so the students most likely to sit inside the cafeteria were the students who were closest when their lunch period started and/or who did not care to have the extra distance to walk back to their classrooms, so a lot of students would eat in alternative locations, like the Mall (main hall outside the cafeteria), the amphitheatre (just outside the cafeteria), or in a classroom (typically the classroom of a teacher who was the faculty advisor for an extracurricular that student was involved with).

ohoho look who's back like 20 hours later i hope you're ready for another theory/assorted questions dump
ley line blossoms too. the 4 petal flowers. im absolutely losing my shit over this idc.
the patterns in the ground, the ruins, the domains, its all the same style. maybe the hypostasises themselves but i cant confirm until they stay still long enough. not andrius tho, the architecture style is different. it was also created by old mondstadt and has no relations to ley lines (other than to collect the reward? idk)
ah, the more i look at it, the more plausible it seems that it's all just based off of that art style. the triquetra i can excuse but not the 4 petal flowers. open to discussion but i cant find anything saying that the design is prevalent in any specific culture?
isotomas has 5 petals while albedo's solar isotoma has 4. coincidence i think not- i bring this up bc of albedo's connection to rhinedottir and by extension, khaeri'ah and the abyss, which if he learned the skill from rhinedottir or based the design off of something related to rhinedottir then the chance that it resembles something of the abyss isnt too much of a stretch, im hoping.
also in correlation with the upsidedown teyvat theory, does this perhaps means that khaeri'ah is on the "surface"? like located inside the abyss itself? or something happened to it that resulted in it separating from teyvat like some atlantis type beat. khemia is known for being dangerous and destructive, so i wouldnt doubt it has a lot of connections to the abyss since its described as "holding an 'unworldly' power"
abyss mages also manipulate the elements without a vision and theyre not classified as elemental beings. assuming they draw their power from the abyss, i don't think itd be entirely impossible for the abyss to be like old teyvat. the teyvat during the seelie era with boundless amounts of elemental energy. the abyss and teyvat are two sides of they same coin, existing harmoniously in the same world.
also tartaglia's master, skirk, was likely to be the swordswoman he met in the abyss, who I'm assuming is human. humans can live in the abyss for prolonged periods of time, and not just a few days (months?) like tartaglia has. also him falling through the ground into the abyss means that there's probably at least one permanent entrance to the abyss and/or multiple smaller ones that flit in and out of existance.
oh and in bennett's love poem, he refers to mare jivari as "the edge of the world" and like??? it could have an entrance/exit to the abyss
ofc this is all just speculation from a sleep deprived anon that invests too much of their time into genshin lore. i hope my paragraphs are intimidating enough (◠‿◠)♡

For Albedo this turned a bit harder for me since I don’t have Albedo and can’t investigate the details more properly so I’ll be going off on guesses here:
First of all design, it feels more like it’s made to correlate to his design in general, the four pointed star. But mostly I have a feeling the center is the most important aspect of it since it again resembles the star.
Second guess would be the fact that it’s a SOLAR isotoma, in its description too it says the following: “To rise from the earth, soar into the sky, and become the sun.” Its design must have been accommodated to fit the design of being sun-like, that or it’s really just to keep the symmetry. Overall the design feels like it’s made to fit three aspects into it: flower, star, and sun.
Third, and this is a big fuckin stretch, but maybe it’s made to have four points for the fact that alchemy has its four major stages of the alchemical magnum opus.
Khaenri’ah feels more like an underground thing than a surface thing if we’re going by the Irminsul’s existence. And man do I wish I know more about that outside power bs
I was actually a devote following of the theory that Skirk is Lumine until I realized that maybe Skirk really is a different character. They could be a survivor of Khaenri’ah that resides in the abyss, but I do wish Mihoyo would expound more on the character story npcs like Rhine, ugh they’re such interesting charas.
While that may be such a cute poem, I think Bennett is simply pointing out the location of the Mare Jivari, as it is mentioned to be at southwestern end of Teyvat. Also fun fact after researching about that place, I forgot there’s a fuckin phoenix there.
And that’s the end of the long theory line, sadly we’re all kept in the dark and preferably for the next five years still.

Exonucleases, they damage the phosphodiester bond starting from one end of the chain. The ester link is a very high-energy bond releasing an incredible amount of energy upon hydrolysis. Like the rest of the bonds talked about earlier, it is additionally broken down by including a water particle. It is a modified kind of ester linkage in which the oxygen bridge is utilized to attach a carbon atom with a sulfur atom. It is developed as an outcome of the reaction in between the carboxylic group of one particle as well as the thiol group (- SH) of another particle. The carboxylic team sheds the oxygen as well as hydrogen while the thiol group loses its hydrogen and also a thioester bond is formed.

The ability of radiolabelled variations of the peptide to precisely localise to ɑvß6-expressing xenografts in vivo, consisting of bust as well as pancreatic, has actually been demonstrated by PET DOG as well as SPECT. Human MHC class I molecules are encoded by a collection of genes-- HLA-A, HLA-B as well as HLA-C (HLA means 'Human Leukocyte Antigen', which is the human equivalent of MHC particles located in the majority of animals). These genes are extremely polymorphic, which means that each person has his/her very own HLA allele set. The consequences of these polymorphisms are differential sensitivities to infection and also autoimmune diseases that may arise from the high diversity of peptides that can bind to MHC course I in various individuals. Also, MHC class I polymorphisms make it practically impossible to have a best cells suit in between contributor as well as recipient, and hence are in charge of graft denial. The normal procedure of antigen discussion via the MHC I molecule is based on a communication between the T-cell receptor and also a peptide bound to the MHC class I molecule. Hence, peptide presented in complex with MHC class I can just be recognised by CD8+ T cells. This interaction belongs of so-called 'three-signal activation design', and in fact stands for the initial signal. The next signal is the communication between CD80/86 on the APC as well as CD28 externally of the T cell, followed by a 3rd signal-- the production of cytokines by the APC which totally activates the T cell to provide a details response. In order to can involving the key elements of adaptive immunity (uniqueness, memory, diversity, self/nonself discrimination), antigens have to be refined as well as provided to immune cells. Antigen discussion is mediated by MHC class I molecules, and also the course II particles discovered on the surface of antigen-presenting cells and certain various other cells. The toughest evidence is connected to skin health and decreases in joint pain from workout or osteoarthritis. As one of the most bountiful healthy protein in the body, collagen serves a number of vital architectural features. Dietary collagen is more difficult for our body to absorb, as compared with hydrolysed variations. All kinds of gelatine for use in medications are manufactured under strict hygiene and safety and security guidelines. Hence, venom-based insecticides can assist deal with the 1000 or two insect pests that minimize the world's crop production by an approximated 10-- 14%. The cone snail-- the world's most dangerous snail-- causes hypoglycaemia to sedate fish prior to capture.
One more little study located that taking a day-to-day collagen peptide supplement for 6 months brought about improvements in nail toughness as well as development. However, this only consisted of 25 participants, as well as there was no sugar pill team-- which decreases the stamina of this evidence. There is some emerging evidence which recommends that taking hydrolysed collagen supplements may help to lower creases and improve collagen degrees in the skin, along with skin hydration and also skin elasticity. However, there are issues with several of the researches in this area, for instance some are really tiny, as well as do not use a control team. Additionally, even more studies are needed in connection with the possible use of collagen supplements in skin disease like eczema. In fact, collagen is thought to comprise around 75% of our skin's dry weight.

Huge dry goodsUAs of June 2020, the growth position of Ethereum 2.0 is definitely "panoramic interpretation"
This article wants to provide everyone inside our community-the Ethereum community-with a panoramic interpretation from the development position of Eth2: what are we developing at this point, what could be developed, and what you need to focus on . I will offer just the right technical description to help you understand our purpose, our vision, the current status of the project, and the work that should be done, and do not let everyone suffocate in mathematical terms and our expert terms. This article comes from this article "The State of Eth2, June 2020" by Danny Ryan @ ethereum.org, compiled, written and organized with the columnist Ethereum lovers. However, this dynamic and conversational technique, although valuable, nevertheless makes many buddies locally baffled. Moreover, Personally, i have to solution the same queries again and again, and even more frightening is the fact that I will be asked exactly the same questions after 6 months! Obviously, there is a communication problem. Although the information exists, it is scattered through the entire Internet - from research posts, technical specifications, to specification interpretation, general public meetings, public conversation channels, reddit community forum posts, and foundation blogs. After Devcon 5 ended, my first try to bridge these details gap was to write the "Eth2 Up-date GLANCE" series of blogs. This series of blogs provides a lot of small clips to help readers understand Eth2.0, but I steadily realized these blogs cannot help you truly achieve a panoramic understanding. Although this bigger picture is often talked about in Podcasts, AMAs (question and solution actions) and meetings, it is still helpful to explain it in text. So here I am! This article should also be ideal for those technical professionals who've a deep understanding of Ethereum but not so much about Eth2. Don't worry, I also recognize that the whole project is large and complicated, also it appears that you can't find yourself solving the issues you encounter. Hope this article can help you better understand what will come in the future. As for friends who know Eth2 nicely, don't miss this article-you can realize where we have been from a broader perspective and exactly how I start to see the possible future growth. Disclaimer: The written text is only my personal opinion on the current improvement of Ethereum 2.0. There are many different voices and views driving the constant development and development of Eth2. This short article is a snapshot of my own interpretation. Eth2, WTFEth2 is a scalable proof-of-stake facilities. Eth2 was built "for" Ethereum and can ultimately "become" Ethereum itself. Eth2 is definitely committed to delivering a safer and scalable environment for the existing Ethereum mainnet, as well as the deployment method won't cause a split effect. At the same time, it also has an upgraded environment for the continuous progress. Long before the release of Ethereum, people knew that a single blockchain model could not supply enough "bandwidth" and for that reason could not end up being the backbone of a new decentralized network. Ethereum-related equity proof research and sharding study can be traced back again to 2014, that is the early days of Ethereum (Ethereum hadn't yet started). Both the proof-of-stake protocol and the sharding architecture are designed to answer the next questions: Given the amount of resources committed to a crypto-economic system, can we enhance security and throughput at the same time, and allow ordinary consumer-grade hardware to take part in consensus and synchronize blockchain? I will not go into the history of these studies here. In a nutshell, these explorations took several years, and several of the original ideas have been proven wrong. In the end, our answer was yes, and it was the Eth2 task. Eth2 can be an ambitious and protracted task that people will launch in phases. These plans have already been thoroughly narrated and discussed, but I nevertheless propose a quick-sighted, not-so-technical interpretation. Related topics: Ethereum 2.0 Newest Staking Information : The many stages of Eth2 Related topics: EthereumUSeven reasons why ETH2.0 will create economic transformation Phase 0 Stage 0 will start the primary of Eth2's new consensus mechanism, the Beacon Chain. The beacon string is definitely where all system-level routines occur, which is also the place for collaboration and conversation within the system. The development objective of Stage 0 would be to allow thousands of consensus models (verifiers) distributed around the world around thousands of nodes to take part in consensus at the same time. Because of the technical dependence on assigning validators to multiple shards following the Phase 1 phase starts, we are in need of the beacon chain in order to handle a lot of validators. A lot of engineering complexity originates from this technical necessity. Other non-fragmented equity proof mechanisms generally only have significantly more than 100 or more than 1,000 verifiers, however the design goal of Eth2 is to accommodate at the very least 16,000 verifiers, and this number is likely to reach thousands in a couple of years. Phase 1 Phase 0 would be to launch a consensus mechanism, while Phase 1 would be to allow plenty of content to reach consensus. This article comes from the shard string. You can understand a shard chain as a blockchain with almost the same complexity as the present Ethereum, but its operation must adhere to the consensus rules of Eth2 (that's, it should be controlled from the beacon chain). Verifiers from the beacon chain will undoubtedly be randomly designated short-term duties: build and verify blocks on a particular shard chain, offer cryptoeconomic guarantees for the state, availability and usefulness from the shard chain, and finally send back To the core system (shard chain). Currently, we be prepared to start 64 shard stores at startup, and the info availability of the entire network will achieve 1 to 4 MB per second (yes, this is a lot of information). Phase 1.5 Stage 1.5 is the consensus system that combines the Ethereum mainnet into Eth2 being a shard (it is constantly on the exist as one of the many shards developed in Phase 1). After that, the Ethereum blockchain that people know and like will no longer be supported by proof-of-work mining algorithm, but will undoubtedly be built by Eth2 validators. For existing applications and users, the hot switch of the consensus mechanism is actually transparent. The application form will persist, however the opener could have a stronger underlying system (much better security attributes, better economic finality, which means that the transaction could be reversed following a huge price is paid, that's, the huge amount of violation of the agreement Transaction certainty shielded by price), more Coating-1 data area, can assistance Rollup and other interesting applications). Related topics: Dry productsUIn-depth understanding of OVM (Positive Rollup): Compatible with EVM and Ethereum Level 2 growth plan Phase 2 Phase 2 must add condition and execution systems to various other shards other than the initial Ethereum shard. There are lots of methods which may be adopted, and figuring out various types and details may be the focus of current research and prototyping. I'll discuss this matter further in a later article. Eth2 will bring benefits to the Ethereum local community. So, we will achieve the aforementioned goals in the future, and Phase 0 is right in front of us, but the whole roadmap seems a little too long. Through the entire upgrade procedure, what advantages can we get from Eth2? good question. Overall, every action of the improve will touch the deeper primary from the Ethereum blockchain, so it will bring greater rigidity to the complete community. As being a user, it is possible to participate in the PoS block production in Stage 0, or it is possible to await the Ethereum blockchain to be fully built-into Eth2 (needless to say, this process should be seamless in the perspective of designers and users of). Regardless of how you elect to participate and that stage you begin to participate, these phases are essential milestones, plus they all have significant benefits. Among the first benefits is that I know that many folks are diehard ETH and can't wait to participate in PoS. Stage 0 is for you personally potential verifiers (and our PoS is certainly amateur-friendly)! Learning to be a validator in PoS offers its own dangers, and the period of staking money is also lengthy. These may dissuade some individuals, so I believe this stage can be an chance for both amateurs and long-term believers of Ethereum. Finally, there is this opportunity that you can enter the game early, help realize our vision, and get higher ETH rewards for participating previously. What about Stage 1? Prior to the integration of Ethereum into the Eth2 system, will there be any use for us to accommodate so much data? Needless to say it works, therefore glad you inquired! Even without native computing power, the data space on Level-1 is very useful. In fact, the most appealing Layer-2 extension system that has emerged before 12 months, known as the "rollup" part chain (that includes optimistic schemes and ZK strategies), is able to follow Layer-1 data Technologies that expands room availability and increases throughput. The data layer of Eth2 is usually expected to offer data option of 1 to 4 MB/s, which may be combined with rollup technology and transformed into massive scalability. But as the Ethereum main chain was disconnected from the brand new sharding universe at the beginning, it made statements about the eth2 shard data is difficult (making claims about the eth2 shard information is difficult). This is also one reason EIP 2537 is very important to the Ethereum mainnet: After the BLS (the brand new signature algorithm utilized by Eth2) can be pre-compiled for the Ethereum mainnet, we are able to write an efficient Eth2 light customer within the Solidity contract, allowing applications on the Ethereum main string (coming in Phase 1.5) Before) be able to declare information on Eth2. Related subjects: Column SightsUWhat really does the discovery of Ethereum Level 2 in 2020 mean? As stated above, Stage 1.5 is an important milestone; before that, Eth2 had been built for Ethereum; after that, Eth2 can be Ethereum itself. All programs will be built-into the upgraded Eth2 consensus mechanism, which not merely retains the functions we are utilized to, but also opens up a new world of secure equity proof algorithms and extremely scalable data layers. For me, this is actually the core of the entire upgrade procedure; its success implies that we have completely anchored Ethereum right into a new reality, which really is a historic moment. After that, turning on hawaii mechanism/execution system on other shard stores can gradually bring additional scalability benefits. The execution mechanism may be by means of EVM, or it may be a new virtual machine called eWASM. Regardless of the choice in the VM, the EVM shards formed by the initial Ethereum along with other shards can socialize and communicate through the beacon chain to form a multi-threaded and sharded system. did you see it? This is a long trip, but with blooms along the way. Related topics: What is the distinction between Ethereum 1.0 and 2.0? "17 FAQS" about Ethereum 2.0 The difficulty of Eth2's implementation and why it is worth it. A lot of core the different parts of the verifier's sharding structures rely on arbitrary sampling of consensus participants (ie verifiers), as well as the sampling constitutes a committee to confirm an integral part of the process (such as a shard chain) . As long as there are enough verifiers within the protocol, even though there's a largest attacker (for instance, controlling 1/3 of most verifiers), it really is almost impossible for your attacker to regulate a committee and damage the entire system ( The possibility is extremely little, and it must be determined with a little order of 1 1 / 2^40). This enables us to design the system (This allows us to create the machine) in order that a person with consumer-grade equipment (like a laptop or even an old mobile phone) may become a validator (as the validator Will undoubtedly be assigned to verify an integral part of the system, which area of the verification task could be finished with the computing sources of an ordinary machine). This is the magic from the sharding architecture and its difficulty. For one, we must have sufficient validators in order that random sampling will undoubtedly be safe: therefore the expected number of validators for Eth2 is much greater than most (I believe even all) other PoS protocols. This creates challenges at every step of the growth process-from research to technical information on the consensus mechanism, to networking strategies, to client source consumption and optimisation. Every step must consider this into consideration: each extra verifier will introduce a little more burden to the machine. The Eth2 client team has accomplished the impossible task of allowing hundreds of thousands of validators to participate in the consensus at the same time, so we are able to safely and efficiently join a lot of shards. Another basic style choice for many shards that makes our development extremely difficult is that we really want scalability without compromising decentralization. Unless you care whether users can confirm the integrity of the entire chain independently, or whether the data within the chain is available to the entire network, it is not difficult to increase the processing quickness of the blockchain to several thousand transactions per second. https://cybersucks.blogspot.com/ is that we need a fragmented consensus system that can separate the machine into several verifiable parts. Can you envisage how difficult it is to conceive and even implement such a consensus mechanism. Related subjects: Popular TechnologyUEthereum 2.0 Staking Guide : Sharded Consensus A creed of several client Ethereum is that Ethereum is first and foremost a couple of protocols. Ethereum is an abstract collection of many rules that make up the protocol, instead of some implementation of the rules. Thus, the Ethereum local community encouraged multiple customer implementations right from the start. Now there are besu, ethereumJS, geth, nthermind, nimbus, open-ethereum, trinity and turbo-geth so many client software can synchronize the Ethereum blockchain. Within the Eth2 side, we've various client software such as for example cortex, lighthouse, lodestar, nimbus, prysm, teku, and trinity. The multi-client paradigm offers many benefits: * Multiple client implementations can produce a wide range of ideas, algorithms, and architectures (each customer implementation will give its own sights and strategies). This kind of cross collision is very good, and in the long run we are able to all develop a lot more reliable software. * Different client software usually has different design goals. Then over time, customers and applications will become more diverse. Your client software will be developed pretty much around the subsequent goals: performance, protection, horizontal scalability, consumer experience, light customer, browser-friendly, resource conserving, etc. * If there are always a large number of client software obtainable in the production environment, a major strike may only trigger one client software to crash (for example, a DoS assault), while some other client software is still intact, and the destructive power of the attack is bound. . This is exactly what happened when we experienced the "Shanghai DoS Assault" in the first days of Ethereum: some DoS attacks could cause the geth client or the parity client to crash, nonetheless it never triggered both. * Each client is a portal to some programming language local community. A client in a particular language may be used as a foundation for introducing tests and innovations for the reason that language. Moreover, the essential tools surrounding your client usually snowball through the language's contributors and device ecosystem. The paradigm of multiple clients strengthens the selling point of Ethereum. Of course, we must pay some price because of this: * Technical specs and testing equipment must be impeccable in order to avoid accidental forks following the mainnet goes reside. If the process has only 1 implementation, after that that implementation will become the protocol itself. In cases like this, any "bug" in the consensus mechanism provides essentially end up being the agreement itself. From the purely neutral point of view, this may not really seem a good factor, but it will get rid of the risk of unintentional forks. As a solution, if there is a healthy submission of client usage in the synchronization main network (for example, no more than 1/3 of most nodes/validators are using the same customer), then your entire network can also be used on a particular client Stay in existence when consensus problems arise. * Compared with an individual client, N types of clients have to cooperate with one another and will expose additional work. A good work may be a burden of linear development, but sometimes it'll be a burden of quadratic growth. We can use some methods to reduce the burden-such as consensus system test suites (and network test suites)-but it is impossible to completely eliminate them. Current standing of Eth2 customer and testnet Phase 0's Eth2 customer has become very complex software in the past two years, and for that reason can handle distributed consensus processes among thousands of validators and a large number of nodes. We've a testnet, and we are moving towards the state launch each day. The so-called half-ninety individuals who travel 100 miles, facts have proved that it's true. I hope you may get out of your safe place and try a variety of clients during the time period before launch. They often times have trade-offs within their implementation, and you also have to do it yourself to find the software program that best suits you best. Moreover, to seriously reap the advantages of the Ethereum multi-client paradigm, we need users to use multiple customers (creating a healthy distribution of use among all sorts of customers). In addition, an anti-collusion motivation mechanism is built into the contract. In the extreme case where a particular mainstream client can make an accidental error that triggers the verifier by using this client to go offline or be fined, if your verifier also shows action relevance for the same client, you then may also be punished. It is much more serious than if you only make errors and have nothing in connection with other people. Quite simply, running a specific niche market client at the moment is better than running a customer that everyone is using. Make sure to think clearly-if there are multiple accessible and secure clients, it really is your responsibility to perform niche client software program and advertise the healthy distribution of client utilization across the network. The other stage is, avoid being embarrassed. If you make an error when running the software according to the documentation, please allow everyone know. Even if it is a spelling error, it is possible to send an adjustment request. If the program crashes or a bug pops up, please be sure to review it on github or the discord channel of the client. You are a beta consumer, sufficient reason for your help, we can make the client better, that is good for everyone. Testnet We have been currently running a small developer network, restarting every one to fourteen days. The reason I state "Developer System" is these testnets are mainly for the designers of the client team to get bugs and make optimizations. These networks are general public and we desired everyone to become listed on, but please note that these systems are not since durable because the Goerli or Rinkeby test networks. The latest testnet launched is the Witti testnet (initiated by Afri Schoedon), which operates the 0.11 edition of the specialized specifications. The client group is now hectic upgrading your client to edition 0.12 from the technical specifications, which integrates the latest IETF BLS standards. After implementation, we shall convert the developer network to version 0.12 and continue steadily to expand the level of the network to allow clients to bear more and more load. Whenever we have 2 to 3 3 types of clients that may successfully synchronize to the 0.12 programmer network and operate under high fill, we will create a more open test network to allow the community to participate more fully. Our goal here is to make a long-term multi-client check system, and simulate whenever you can the operating environment of the primary network that's not yet on-line (allowing users to apply how to operate nodes and test anything they would like to test). The perfect situation would be to start only 1 test network and troubleshoot faults while sustaining the network procedure. But in fact, we may restart or even open another test network multiple occasions depending on the location and intensity of the fault. As well as the regular test network, we will furthermore open an "attack system" with incentives: a well balanced test network will be run by the client team, and you will make an effort to disrupt the network. Successful attackers can obtain ETH benefits provided by the Ethereum Foundation. Related topics: Vitalik: ETH 2.0 is definitely on track, the new "multi-client" testnet Schlesi lays an integral foundation The current condition of Eth2 tools Although the tools surrounding Eth2 remain very immature, also, they are thriving and thrilling. As stated above, tools are often born out of the client's code bottom and the growth work of your client team, however now increasing numbers of people are becoming involved. In order to better understand Eth2, interact with Eth2, and even protect and reinforce Eth2, our neighborhood needs to continue steadily to develop Eth2 equipment. Some teams and individuals have provided excellent value with their own Eth2 tools, and I wish to applaud them! I furthermore welcome everyone to build up new tools, forge ahead and consolidate results. Eth2 tools are a completely new field, a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to dig out pain points, provide worth, and stay alive. Below is a list of some work happening, but there's still a lot to do! * Block explorer: Beaconcha.in, Etherscan, Eth2stats * Network equipment: Prrkl, Rumor, Pyrum, Stethoscope * Budget and Keysotre: ethdo, down payment cli, EIP 2335 and other new standards * API style and prototype binding * Forfeiture detection device: Prysm "hash slinging slasher" also has some open tool topics: * Eth2 verifier alert: remind the appropriate node operator when the verifier's performance is not ideal * Validator deposit monitoring: Help the Eth2 obstruct explorer connect with Ethereum by monitoring the validator's deposit processing process * The usage of the verifier safety measures brought: use a proxy to monitor the verifier's messages and ensure that your client cannot deliver insecure messages. There are still many issues-and the introduction of tools is not limited by the areas already mentioned in the technical specifications . Creativity is the key. If you wish to contribute your personal strength, please contact the Eth2 customer team. The current state of Eth1+Eth2 integration In today's Ethereum client (such as for example Geth), all of the technical complexity can be brought about by user-level activities-transaction pool, block creation, virtual machine calculation, state storage space And retrieval. The core consensus mechanism-proof of work-is a relatively simple area of the agreement. Therefore, a lot of the complexity can be handled by complicated hardware beyond your core protocol. On the other hand, the Eth2 customer implementation is completely focused on the consensus system. In the proof-of-stake mechanism and sharding structures, plenty of complexity is usually endogenous to the protocol itself to experience a scalable consensus system. This difference allows Eth1 and Eth2 clients to form a beautiful pairing. The geth customer team under the Ethereum Foundation and the TXRX team of ConsenSys are doing preliminary work to merge the two. The work consists of: (1) Determine the communication process between Eth1 and Eth2 clients; (2) Put in a consensus engine that may be controlled with the communication protocol for Eth1 clients; (3) Prototype and simulate clients in Eth2 Phase 1 End habits to check coupling. We be prepared to see some concrete results this summer. You may get an overview from the Eth1 + Eth2 client relationship within this research post; the technical scope from the integration can be found here. The current study status from the execution mechanism as well as the cross-shard communication system is as defined above, the specific path to open the cross-shard execution perform is an area that is still under intense discussion and research. There are still many problems to be solved urgently. For example: * Just how many shard chains should allow execution function? * Aside from Eth1 sharding, do we need to use EVM or eWASM like a virtual machine? * How to effectively construct and process cross-shard transactions? * What changes have to be made on the prevailing EVM to aid cross-shard transactions? * Can/should the execution system and account construction be usually extensible? The eWASM group (under the Ethereum Foundation) as well as the Quilit team (of ConsenSys) did a lot of research in the past 12 months. The conclusion would be that the field of options is very broad, and although we have fully understood the breadth of the fields, the current focus would be to find easy and reliable solutions that enable us to test, prototype, and actually start discussions. Because of this, the Eth1by64 plan of the eWASM team was created (here's an overview of the project; there are also some technical specs under conversation). There has been rapid progress in translating abstract cross-shard transaction concepts into dependable technical specs (for dialogue and final prototyping). Please stay tuned, especially if you're a dApp creator. We intend to provide something you can understand and operate within the next couple of months, and we look forward to your feedback. The partnership between stateless Ethereum and Eth2 Another section of ??study and growth parallel to Eth2 is called "Stateless Ethereum". Stateless Ethereum research is to solve the issue of Ethereum's state data scale. The solution is to enable network individuals to confirm the validity of the block without keeping the entire Ethereum blockchain state locally. The existing Ethereum state changeover function implicitly needs the complete condition as input. The thought of ??stateless Ethereum is to include the witness of hawaii of the deal to be changed in the block. This makes hawaii transition procedure (also hawaii verification process) a functionality that only takes the obstruct itself being an input. For users, which means that it is possible to synchronize the blockchain and even monitor some of the states you value, but you won't need to store all of the state information. Some participants (such as for example block producers, prevent explorers, paid state service providers) may store all claims, but most individuals may not shop all states. For Eth2, statelessness can be an important technical system to make sure that nodes and verifiers can confirm and protect methods without the burden of storing all user claims of most shards. On the contrary, the verifier can selectively become the block manufacturer of particular shards, as well as the baseline verifier just verifies stateless blocks. Stateless Ethereum is a powerful complement to the Eth2 vision, since it can ensure that the foundation of the sharding protocol is still lightweight. On the other hand, although we plan to operate Eth2 statelessly, if the stateless path shows to be unworkable in the end, we have other ways (although Personally, i have a lot of self-confidence in statelessness ??). I will not really interpret the status quo of stateless Ethereum any more, as long as I know that is an fascinating parallel research field with the purpose of making sure the long-term sustainability of Ethereum. If you wish to learn more, please notice Griffin's The 1.x Documents series of blogs. Conclusion Eth2 is really a large-scale project to supply Ethereum with a far more advanced, next-generation, highly scalable, protected, and decentralized consensus mechanism. Many groups and countless folks are developing it night and day, hoping it will become a fact. The path we choose is usually difficult, but we've made tremendous progress and will continue to make progress. The core of this new consensus system (the beacon string) is around the corner. If you are a aspiring validator, now is the time to participate. Try a variety of customers, assistance multi-client paradigm, and help Ethereum 2.0 obtain rich client diversity as a base at the start! If you're a user or a dApp developer, make sure you continue to develop on the existing Ethereum, and we will continue to prepare a safer and more scalable operating atmosphere for you. When the time comes, the process of switching to Eth2 will undoubtedly be as smooth as you possibly can. Thank you to the teams and individuals who assisted Ethereum keep running and in good problem today; also thank everyone who ready for future years of Ethereum in Eth2; give thanks to all users and developers who made Ethereum stunning and amazing?? ??

when the party’s over pt.2
“But the thing is, he’s like objectively gorgeous. He’s not even hot, he’s beautiful.” “I get it.” “I’ve spoken to like four different girls across campus and all of them think he’s perfect.” “That’s interesting.” “I think I might be in love. That’s not even an exaggeration, it’s- y/n? Are you listening?”
Y/n looks up from her bowl of now soggy cereal and gives her friend a tight-lipped smile, “Sorry, Cass. I am paying attention. Promise.” Cassie tucks a strand of auburn hair behind her pierced ear and crosses her arms against the table, the way she does whenever she feels inclined to stage an intervention, “You’re not, you’ve been infatuated with your cornflakes for the past twenty minutes. You’re not good.” “I’m fine.” “And I’m going to get a first in my degree. Stop lying, y/n! You’ve been a hermit for the past week. Talk to me.”
Y/n sighs and runs a hand through her hair. Cassie is annoyingly astute. It’s a Thursday morning and they’ve got the apartment to themselves. Ethan has an early morning lecture and Grayson is on the other side of town at lacrosse training.
“I don’t know what to say.” she shrugs. “Is it something I’ve done?” Cassie asks, her eyebrows furrowed in deep concern. “Jesus, of course not, Cass!” “Oh thank God!” she laughs in relief, placing her hand over y/n’s that’s cradling her spoon, “The last thing I want to do is fall out with you.” “I know me too.” y/n smiles. “So what’s up?” Y/n grimaces and Cassie notices the way her eyes drift upwards to wander around the kitchen and avoid contact with hers, “I haven’t been sleeping well recently.”
The penny drops for Cassandra Young as she finally puts two and two together. She fights the pleased smirk that dances across her lips. She’s hit the jackpot. Cassie is acutely aware of Grayson’s little habit of accumulating female companions and then sending them home after maybe half an hour of sitting next to each other on his bed. She’d stumbled into a girl who was leaving their apartment as she was walking in, alcohol’s effects wearing off and her eye makeup smeared halfway down her cheeks. This girl, Lauren if Cassie can remember correctly, had explained that Grayson had brought her home but had decided he was too tired for anything more than talking about what football team they each support. Cassie was baffled, to say the least when she’d met Lauren, not expecting to see anyone awake at four thirty in the morning. She was even more taken aback by the concept of Grayson Dolan bringing girls back to their apartment. Cassie is not ignorant or deluded or oblivious, she knows the way Grayson feels about y/n based on what she would deem empirical evidence. This notion of him trying to prove some kind of point makes her want to knock some sense into him. It’s a typical boy thing really, the whole jealousy card.
“Let me guess, it’s because of Gray.” “Well, yeah that’s partly to blame.” y/n flushes, not expecting Cassie to be so observant, “You’ve noticed it too?” “Noticed what?” “The girls, Cass. Every single weekend he’s got someone new in his bed, and not that there’s anything wrong with that, I just wish they weren’t so loud!” she’s getting more worked up by the second and Cassie has to hide her amusement. “Oh my God, you’ve heard them doing it?” she knows full well that there’s no way y/n could’ve heard something that wasn’t actually going on, but Cassie can’t wait until her friend finally admits that this is irritating her. “No! I’ve always fallen asleep by then or I’ve got a podcast playing or something.” Y/n doesn’t want to admit that Grayson having female company irks her beyond her own belief, because admitting it aloud would make it that much more real. Suppressed feelings are dangerous enough as it is, having an external source acknowledging the emotions is essentially a recipe for emotional armageddon. She can sense that maybe Cassie has an inkling because Cassie can read people the way a middle-aged woman devours the horoscope page of a trashy magazine; with intense analysis. But simply stating that you’re jealous of the girls your best friend brings home is laughably harder than it sounds. So y/n consciously changes conversation topic back to Cassie’s beautiful stranger in her Economics seminar, reveling in the way her best friend’s eyes widen with excitement. They’re stood at the sink when Cassie’s mouth works faster than her mind and decides to drop the bombshell, “You do know that he doesn’t actually sleep with them, right?” Y/n, having forced her mind to stray far away from Grayson Dolan, doesn’t quite understand, “What?” Cassie dries her sudsy hands on the back of her jeans and turns to look at y/n who’s leaning on the kitchen counter, “Grayson hasn’t had sex with any of the girls he’s brought home. He doesn’t sleep with them at all. They all end up leaving after like an hour of him being all awkward because he doesn’t know how to tell them he’s not into it.”
This revelation hangs in the air above the girls, like flecks of dust that haven’t yet settled. Y/n is processing what Cassie has said, the words all making perfect sense yet being completely incomprehensible. Grayson Dolan has sex, he must do. She can’t fathom a universe in which the boy wouldn’t get any. She’s heard him talking to girls in his bed. She knows they must do stuff. Cassie watches as incredulity washes over y/n’s blushing features. Bingo. “Where did you get that idea from?” she stammers. “I’ve bumped into some of them leaving, they’re all super sweet. I’ve heard them too, I’ll be going to the kitchen to get water or something and he’s talking about getting them an Uber.” “Oh.” Cassie breaks into laughter, the soft chuckles telling y/n that she’s been so blind. It’s blatantly obvious, as cliche as it may sound, that she’s the last person to know. She knows that the connection y/n and Grayson have may be strong, but it’s also deep. It’s fragile in its strength, both them incredibly insecure in their own forged bond. It’s as if their closeness is a given, that regardless of their romantic circumstances, Grayson and y/n will always be Grayson and y/n. Through disjointing themselves into a relationship in which they consider their friendship absolute, they’re setting themselves up for heartbreak.
Luckily, y/n has a painfully busy day. She’s occupied with the tribulations of a tutorial and then an excessively profound study session with her Literature research group in the library. Y/n doesn’t think about Grayson. She desperately wants to, even if it’s just for a split second, but she knows that thinking about him will only lead to her conjuring theoretical scenarios in which she always gets let down. A wave of relief comes in the form of Ethan Dolan when he meets her outside of the student theatre at six in the evening. His eyes light up when he sees her coming his way, her tote bag filled with notebooks slung over her shoulder. “Hey there, kiddo.” he jokes, pulling her into a hug, “How’ve you been?” “Swamped,” she mumbles into his t-shirt, inhaling a familiar scent of gum and cologne, “Super excited for this though.” “Yeah me too, the reviews it’s had are all very complimentary.” Ethan leads her into the ugly concrete building that was probably recognized as architectural genius last century. “Guess we’ll have to see for ourselves!” y/n smiles, reaching for the programme he had in his hand. The show is underwhelming, to say the least; a load of students rolling around in fake blood screaming in iambic pentameter. Ethan and y/n sit catatonically, in sheer shock until the interval arrives. As the lights come up they turn to look at one another, pale-faced and slightly panicked and burst into a fit of childish giggles. “Jesus,” he breathes, “What is this?” “I don’t even know, I’ve never hated Macbeth more.” “I’m sorry I dragged you along to this,” he grimaces, unable to fathom what they’ve just watched. “Don’t be, it’s all very interesting.”
Ethan sighs loudly, like you do after you’ve been laughing for a while and suddenly remember that life seems to advance without giving you time to tap out. “Cass said you two had a talk this morning,” he says. Y/n feels her face get considerably warmer, “She did?” “Yeah, something about Gray keeping you awake at night.” Ethan spreads his legs a little wider, trying to get comfortable in the weirdly malleable velvet chair. He turns to gauge her expression. “Only on Saturdays,” y/n cringes, “It’s not that big of a deal.” “Just know he’s not having sex like five centimeters from you, yeah? Gray wouldn’t do that to you.”
He has to bite his tongue to keep himself from telling her more than his brother would want her to hear. Ethan loves y/n, they’ve been friends since they’d started college. But this was Grayson’s business and he didn’t want to intervene, as much as it frustrated him. Watching y/n shuffle into the kitchen on a Sunday morning, her hair slipping from the scrunchie she’d tied it in the night before and a fake smile adorning her slightly chapped lips when she saw Grayson, is painful in itself. Knowing that she thinks Grayson is the type of person to say one thing and completely refute his own morals is irritating. Living in an apartment with two human beings who refuse to accept that maybe there’s a possibility that they might be in love with each other is wickedly bothersome.
Y/n doesn’t know how she’s supposed to deal with this information. When returning from the theatre with Ethan that evening she heads straight to her room, avoiding any interaction with her housemates. She strips herself of her jeans and blouse and pulls on some sweatpants and the softest hoodie she owns, before curling up on her bed with her laptop in front of her. Being a recluse is quite enjoyable. Her phone vibrates on the bedside table, causing her to look up from the Netflix show playing in front of her. Y/n feels her heart begin to pound markedly faster when she sees who the text is from. SMS messages from your best friend aren’t supposed to make your palms damp. breakfast tomorrow?
She replies with the excuse that she has an essay to write. She hopes he’ll believe her, but she knows deep down that he’ll see right through the lie. Y/n hasn’t seen Grayson since Tuesday when he’d knocked on her door asking her if their Wi-Fi had cut out or if it was just his computer messing around. She doesn’t think she’s going to be able to face him again. Everything about him hurts her, and the worst part is that she knows it’s not intentional. Grayson can’t help how adorable he is when he laughs at one of his own jokes. He’s utterly oblivious to the way he makes her feel when he makes direct eye contact with her and asks her for her opinion because he really values it. Grayson Dolan doesn’t know that all he is is damn near perfect. There’s nothing he can do to make this better, she can’t risk losing their friendship over her emotional confusion. She wishes she could blame the whole scenario on someone else. But sadly, when you’re in love with your best friend, there’s not much you can do other than wallow in your own misfortune. Y/n curses whoever decided that unrequited emotions should be a fixture of human existence.
-
When she should be sharing pancakes and maple syrup with Grayson, y/n’s in the library. Her copy of Wuthering Heights is fanned out in front of her and her legs are tucked underneath her on one of the semi-comfortable chairs. Academia serves its purpose as a distraction, recently her motivation levels have been unwaveringly high. Someone moves to sit in front of her and instinctively she looks up to see who’s been unlucky in finding their own table. Y/n’s greeted by the blinding grin of Nat, his hair as tousled and as soft looking as it has always been and his adorable tortoise-shell glasses perched on his news. “Hi!” she whispers with a smile, fiddling with her pastel highlighter. “Hey, how are you?” he unzips his Kanken and takes out a hefty looking book. “I’m good, still studying. You?” “You’re incredibly motivated this term, aren’t you? I’m just trying to get in some reading before a lecture.” “How conscientious of you.”
Nat laughs, causing a few heads in the quiet space to turn their way. Y/n isn’t embarrassed to be seen with Nat. If anything, she’s quite proud. He’s popular across campus; vice-president of the student union, on the lacrosse team and well-known amongst faculty staff. People don’t mind that he’s a little loud, his vivaciousness is admirable. The pair get to work in their comfortable silence. He’s got his head rested on his hand as he flicks through the browned pages of his novel and she’s taking notes as she reads the assigned extract of her book. Y/n can’t help but sneak a few glances at him, so enthralled by his studiousness and his effortless ability to look cool. She’s halfway through quoting Heathcliff when she hears a whisper of her name. Nat watches her intently as she looks towards him, taking in the adorable sweater she’s wearing and the way pieces of her hair fall into her face every few minutes, forcing her to swipe them behind her ears. “There’s a party at mine tomorrow night, just a few of us seniors getting together. I’d really like you to come,” he says quietly. Y/n’s a little startled by the invitation. She’s never been directly invited to a party before, let alone a senior’s.
“I think I’m around,” she says abashed. “Awesome! I was kinda worried you wouldn’t wanna come.” Nat runs his tongue over his bottom lip and pushes his glasses up the bridge of his nose, “I don’t see you at many parties anymore.” “I haven’t been up to go out recently,” “I always see the Dolans at frat events, but never you.” “I guess I just haven’t been invited to a party I actually want to attend,” she lies, Nat’s not going to know about her situation so there’s no point feeling guilty. “Sounds like you’ve got high standards,” he laughs. “The highest.”
-
“You’re an actual saint, Grayson! Thank you so much!” Cassie cheers as she slams the back door of his Bronco. “Yeah thanks, bro.” Ethan chimes in, giving his brother a firm pat on the shoulder before clambering out of the car. “Don’t mention it.”
Grayson watches as Ethan shuts his door and begins to walk towards Alpha Sigma Pi’s house. He’s just about to drive off when Cassie runs back to the passenger side of the vehicle and pounds her tiny fist against the window. Grayson winds it down, looking at her in bewilderment. “Jesus, Cass! What’s wrong?” “If you’re planning on talking to y/n tonight, she’s not home.” “Oh, ok.” “She’s gone to this senior’s house to talk about Descartes with other clever people and she’ll probably wind up having sex with one of them because they all look cool as fu-” “When is she coming back?” Grayson asks, his mind teeming with scenarios in which something awful happens to y/n. “She never said, I’m sorry G.” Ethan’s noticed that Cassie hasn’t been following him, so he turns back towards the car. Grayson wants to question why he’s in need of Cassie’s sympathy but doesn’t want to have his entire emotional turmoil relayed to him through the eyes of his housemate. He runs a hand through his hair, tugging on it slightly as he realizes his entire plan for the night has been foiled. What’s going on?” Ethan asks as he reaches the Bronco, his arm wrapping around Cassie so he can stick his head in through the window too. “I told him that y/n’s not in tonight.” “Yeah she’s gone to Nat’s, y’know the guy on the lacrosse team,” Ethan tells his twin, “Looks like you’ve got the apartment to yourself tonight, Gray.”
Cassie can practically feel the tension radiating off Grayson. She notices the way he’s refusing to look at them, his hazel eyes fixated on the empty road in front of him. His jaw clenches and relaxes a few times and he exhales loudly. “She’s safe, it’s not like this guy’s a creep or anything, and she hasn’t been out in ages.” she reasons. “I know,” Grayson mumbles, “I’m just gonna head home, get some sleep. You’re sure you don’t mind getting an Uber?” “No, you go ahead. You haven’t had a quiet weekend in ages.” Ethan says, giving the Bronco a little tap before lifting his weight off it. Cassie flashes Grayson a look of uncertainty to which he returns a tight-lipped smile. She steps away from the car and Grayson rolls up the window. The pair on the sidewalk watch as he drives off down the street. Cassie looks to Ethan, “Do you think it’s ever going to happen?” The broad floppy-haired boy shrugs, “I mean, I’ll be surprised if it doesn’t.”
-
Y/n has never felt so out of place in her entire college life. She’s stood in Nat’s kitchen alone, pouring herself a glass of something strong. Around her are a few seniors, collectively looking like an Urban Outfitters campaign, chatting animatedly amongst themselves. This kind of affair was a lot more understated than she was expecting; there’s no pounding bass blasting through speakers and there isn't a keg in sight. Y/n recognizes a few of the girls there, one red-head making an effort to approach her and ask if Professor Stevens was grading harshly this year. She’s received some compliments on her dress and a guy told her that her earrings were ‘actually awesome’, yet y/n feels so uncomfortable. She wonders if everyone that’s acknowledged her presence knows that she’s not a third year and doesn’t really belong here. She doesn’t even know why she decided to come.
Nat stumbles into the kitchen, notably tipsy and cheers at the sight of all his guests. He makes his way around each small cluster of people, giving hugs to the girls and weird bro-hugs that y/n will never fully understand to the guys. When he finally reaches her, his flushed face is adorned with a megawatt smile. “Y/n! I’m so glad you made it! How are you?” he shouts. “I’m good thank you, Nat. I see you’re having a nice time.” “We were playing Ring of Fire,” he guffaws, leaning on the counter opposite her for balance, “And as you can probably tell, the odds were not in my favor.” Y/n takes a sip of her drink, wincing at the burn it leaves in her throat, before taking another. She listens to him ramble about various drinking games as he gesticulates fiercely. Nat, despite being rather drunk, notices that y/n isn’t her usual relaxed self. He pushes up his glasses that have slipped hilariously far down his nose and shoves his hands into the pocket of his patterned dress pants. “You’re not drunk enough.” Y/n chuckles mid-sip of her drink, “You’re very right.” “Come play some games with us, it’ll get you pissed in no time.” Y/n gladly follows him into the living room and ends up squashed on a couch in between Nat and a very friendly girl called Sarah.
-
Grayson Dolan is pissed off. Not at anybody, unless if being angry towards yourself counts. He’s finally decided that he can’t go on avoiding y/n and she can’t go on avoiding him. Granted, it’s taken him far longer than it should have to come to the conclusion that there’s no point dancing around the term friendship if they’re not exactly friends right now. Grayson doesn’t know how he intended on telling her that he thinks he might have feelings for her. Before he’d found out that she wasn't in their apartment, he’d assumed that he might just walk in and profess his love for her on one knee. Y/n likes romantic literature, so she probably would have liked that. Nonetheless, Grayson is acutely aware that he does live in a reality in which everyone can break into song and somehow all know the choreography to an improvised number. As rom-com-like as this whole ordeal may feel, it’s still very much a brutal situation in which someone inevitably gets hurt. Not every male is a loveable, bumbling and  British with the ability to somehow win the emotional lottery. Take that Hugh Grant.
He’s lying in his bed, the curtains drawn and the lights out, with the hood of his sweatshirt blocking out the rest of the world. He wants y/n. He wants her so much it hurts. He hates himself for ever blindly believing that it would take another girl to fill the weird void he has in his life. Grayson thought perhaps having someone else would ease the pain, maybe even dull it down a little until he could watch y/n smile at him and not have a rapid increase in heart rate.
Falling for your best friend is excessively romanticized and Grayson has come to realize this now. He didn’t wake up one morning realizing he loves y/n, nor did it come to him in an inexplicable flash of affection. It all sort of happened in stages. One minute he was admiring how charmingly funny she is, the next he’s noticing how pretty her eyes are and eventually he decides that she’s the best thing since sliced bread. It wasn’t a mutual epiphany, more of a staggered process in which the ‘f word’ transforms from something fricative and blasphemous to friend.
He doesn’t notice his phone’s vibrating at first, he’s far too immersed in his thoughts to be tugged away from them. But as Grayson rolls over onto his side, he notices his bedside table is shaking. His large hand fumbles along the surface, knocking over a tube of zit cream on his quest for his device. His eyes widen at her name across the screen and in panic, he accepts the call. “Y/n?” “Grayson?” he notices the way the first syllable of his name slurs into the second. “I’m here, is everything ok?” “Gray, I miss you. The party’s finished. I just wanted to call you.”
Part two! Here it is! I hope you guys liked it! It’s been a bit of a struggle trying to write all my ideas down in a way that’s somewhat cohesive and readable. This is definitely the longest piece I’ve written on Tumblr to date! I think it’s because this little story thingy is told from both characters’ perspectives, and usually I tend to like to stick to one narrative, if that makes sense? Anywho, please let me know what you thought because your feedback means the most! Have a lovely day / night - K x
{ p.s. here’s the lil tag list shenanigans I promised I’d try and sort out for you gorgeous people! @the-evolution-of-stupidity @skurtdolans @graydolan12 @thedarkrozeofnight @yslbailey thank you so much for all the love! }

A NaruHina fanfic based off of shamy’s doujinshi posted May 31, 2019.  Please check out her 5-panel illustration!
Summary:  Naruto, a skilled theater technician, and Hinata, a breakout pianist and composer, smile at each other.
Rated: G
Chapter 1: Unexpected
Note: This chapter has been edited from its original posting.
Naruto had always liked being the center of attention.  As a small kid, he enjoyed making others laugh (sometimes disruptively, but what kid isn’t a little rascal?).  His dream job was a comedian, and when the chance arose to formally get up on the stage in high school, he went for it.  He joined drama class!
Little did he realize, he had absolutely no talent for acting…dancing…singing…anything really.
His uncoordinated movements and awkwardly delivered lines really seemed meant for comedy, as if everything he did was tongue-in-cheek, even when he tried his best.  He laughed it off, but it was disheartening to find out that drama wasn’t what he thought it was going to be.  Improv was great fun.  Everything else…not so much.  But it was too late to switch classes.
So the drama teacher assigned him to stage handing.  At first it was sets and props.  He was one of those guys dressed in all black who had to skitter across the stage unseen between acts and it kinda really sucked for him.
At one rehearsal, during a break, he was so bored, he snuck behind the tech and started fooling around with the switches and buttons just to see what they would do.  He wasn’t afraid of breaking it, like how can you break something by just turning things on and off and sliding things around.
Well, he got caught.  And he might’ve needed to serve detention.
On the plus side, after that show, the teacher gave him the chance to start learning lights and sound with the older students.  He had a natural instinct when it came to understanding the feeling the act was trying to convey and determining the lights to push that mood forward in a visual, almost tangible, way.
Lights and sound turned out to be a real skill.  Friends would watch him work and just stare at him with an expression of ‘how does he know what to do with all that stuff.’  He liked to explain the controls and the applications on the computer to them as technically as possible while acting as if he was dumbing it down (“well this is just a basic RGB console, so I just have to apply the Additive Color Theory.  It’s simple, really”), just to make himself sound that much more impressive.
He was soon asked to help with school events, music performances, dances…just plugging all the wires in earned him admiring comments.
He found the attention he had originally been seeking in a much different vein.  It was ironic in a way he appreciated, considering that he was never in the spotlight.  He always thought drama would be about standing out and expressing the individual.  He realized he had a passion for the other side of that.  Working with a team to, really, control the emotions of the audience, to dig deeper into drawing out the will of the actor.  There was a kind of power in being behind-the-scenes that he hadn’t expected, and it was a shared understanding all the backstage guys held.
From high school to volunteer and part-time work as a Casual, and all through college, he worked with and befriended numerous different artists.  Each had their own unique vision, and he got to play a part in bringing that to life for the artist and the audience.
The connections he made through it all served him well.  The Historic Konoha Theatre had an opening on their tech team.  He applied.  He was hired, even with how young he was.
The first show he worked was for a famous comedian by the name of Jiraiya.  He was more than a little starstruck to meet the King of Laughs in person.
But not all of the shows are established artists.  The Konoha Theatre has numerous different types of events.  Due to its more intimate architecture than the Konoha City Concert Hall, many up-and-coming artists choose HKT for their concerts.
And Naruto found he likes working with these younger artists more.  In creating a memorable performance with these artists, he feels like he has greater impact on their careers, like he might really be making a difference for them in helping them achieve their dreams.
He’s been feeling this way especially with their current preparation with a young pianist, perhaps the youngest solo performer he's worked with yet at HKT.  She seems only a little younger than he is, practically fresh out of college.  But despite the media attention she seems to have been getting for the past handful of years, the girl seems uncharacteristically shy, from her cautious expression to her modest attire.
“Hinata, did you have any specific lighting in mind for your concert?” he asks during their first scheduled meeting.  He scans her setlist, recalling the songs from her online profile.  He wasn’t familiar with her before, but he did his research.  He recognizes that half of the songs on the list are from her work for the season’s hit drama.  “Or did you plan on projecting any scenes from the drama during the concert?”
“Oh, no,” she quietly begins.  “I wasn’t thinking of anything fancy, just…something regular?”  Her voice turns up at the end, suggesting that she doesn’t have any idea of what “regular” might mean.
“Okay.”  He nods.
“I’m sorry, I don’t know anything really about the lighting,” she adds quickly.
“No need to apologize.”  He smiles.  “I’ll show you some options, and we can go with what you feel comfortable with.”
Her expression immediately clears.  “I’d like that, thank you…”
“No problem.”  He shows her the common ways, from under-lighting to increasing the diameter of the spotlight, and the use of colors to help convey feeling.  He encourages her to consider a blue tint on the backlight for her moodier songs from the drama.  “It would be subtle.  It wouldn’t take away from your playing,” he assures her.
She pinches her lips together, obviously uncertain.
“Why don’t you get up there on the stage and see how it feels?  I’ll play one of your songs…how about...‘you and the stars’...from the speakers?  You can sorta get an idea.”
She nods, and as she makes her way up toward the stage, he finds her song and begins to play it.  Her piano music fills the house.
He watches her turn this way and that at the center of the stage, one moment looking thoughtfully at the backlight, the next moment staring out toward all of the seats.  At one point she stares blankly toward the wings, probably picturing the grand piano there or imagining herself playing it.  When he realizes she might be out there for the entire song, he sits back to relax and just listen.
He’s constantly amazed by the talent he meets.  It’s no different today, but composers are a different brand from musicians, dancers, actors, and even choreographers.  Perhaps even lyricists.  He wonders again, just as he had when he first took a listen to her music, what exactly inspired the sounds she somehow strung together.
This song he chose in particular stands out.  It’s one of her hits from the drama, which he still needs to actually watch...he plans on marathoning it tonight...but this one in particular makes him think about his mother.  He wonders if the song relates at all to the death of a loved one in the drama.
Eventually, she makes her way back to the board.  She still wears a thoughtful expression.
“Whatdja think,” he asks.
“It’s nice...but if I use color for this song, then I should probably use colors for all of the songs, right?”
He smiles and shakes his head.  “Not necessarily.  For some of the songs, we can use just a spotlight.  That might be effective if you’d like the audience to focus more on you, your technique, or prowess.  For your songs that are more emotional or for the ones you’d like your audience to be looking more inward at themselves...more reflectively, then color on the backlight would be effective.”
She nods slowly, and he lets her process.  Finally, she looks directly at him.  “Okay.”
He looks back at her, at her somehow determined yet simultaneously blank expression.  Ah, maybe she doesn’t know where to start.  He leans forward and pushes the setlist in front of her.  “Why did you choose this order?  Tell me your thought process and we can go from there.”
She takes a deep breath, as if she’s getting ready for something really challenging.  “Okay,” she repeats with an expression of complete focus, and he wishes he had someone on the team to witness this with him.  “This” being, her.  She comes off as being overly serious, understandably so with it being her first solo concert, but it’s kind of funny and adorable.
Yet as she walks him through the setlist, she very eloquently explains the journey she hopes to take her audience through.  There are times when she blushes as she shares her personal feelings about a song, and there are times when her eyes light up when he smiles at her in acknowledgement of her ideas.  He comes to learn that many of her songs were inspired by people she’s been with or seen, even just once, or places she’s been to, from foreign cities to nature walks, hinting at perhaps a more extroverted personality than one would expect.  She shares quietly and unrushed, as if she’s telling him secrets.  It’s definitely charming.
He can tell as he helps her decide her lighting design that she’s much calmer now.  They can both see the show coming together, which very apparently relieves her stress.  She voices her opinion more readily, and her smiles come easier, shining whenever he shows her a lighting that fits her developing vision.  It’s one of those moments that make him feel fulfilled in this profession.
He finishes the last of the notes on her concert and turns the laptop to show her.  “Alright, this is the plan!  I’ll share this with the team.”
“Thank you,” she softly replies, but her bright smile shows her excitement.
It’s a pretty smile.
“Yeah, it’s going to look great!  We’ll see you at the rehearsal on Friday.”
She hums her affirmation as she gathers her things, and he notes how she’s still smiling in her quiet way.  Then, how her gaze flits back to his, and how her smile turns even sweeter.
It has him wondering at the meaning behind her looks, and if they’re meant to make him feel like they’re especially for him, meant to make him feel good, and if...maybe she...
“Uh actually- Hinata..me and a couple of others from the team were gonna go grab lunch soon.  Would you wanna join us?”
“Oh!...Um, I wouldn’t be intruding?”
“Not at all!”  He stands to walk out with her.
“Okay, then.”  She smiles shyly once more, looking up at him, and he grins, happy that she seems happy.
Yet even through the reassuring expression he gives her, he wonders at her reactions, her expressions, looking to see if any are maybe meant just for him.

Mission 48
Seblaine Week 2019, Day 1
Theme: Accidental Dating/Marriage
Summary: Ambassador Blaine Anderson has just left Earth on a long-term mission for the Intergalactic Diplomacy Bureau. The goal? Establish positive relations with the mysterious inhabitants of a planet three million light years away. He gets a little bit more than he bargained for. - PG, just under 3,000 words
Intergalactic wormhole travel was always a bit dizzying. This was his 13th journey from Earth, but Blaine still found himself fighting off nausea as the small, spherical ship jettisoned through space-time. The human body simply wasn't built for this kind of chaos.
He was anxious, too. It was his first long-term diplomacy mission, to a planet they'd only recently established communication with. Instruments and tech had bent sent ahead of him, to report vital measurements like temperature and breathability of the atmosphere, but Blaine would be the first human being to step foot there. He would stay for months, learning what he could, establishing connections, acting as the sole representative of his entire species as two advanced worlds worked out how they could benefit from the other.
The mysterious inhabitants had offered very little information about themselves except to assure that Earth's diplomat would need not worry about language translation and could expect many of the comforts of home.
It was a vague but encouraging invitation. Blaine could only hope for the best. His success would mean peaceable relations for years to come. His failure could mean anything from being demoted back to an assistantship to all-out planetary war.
No pressure.
Blaine clutched the rigid armrests of his seat as the vibration rose to a frenzied pitch. Despite a half dozen safety restraints and a design meant to cushion his body from the worst of it, Blaine felt his bones start to rattle beneath his skin. He gnawed at his mouthguard, clamped his eyes shut, and-
Just when he could take no more, the ship exited the wormhole. The sensation was like the snap of a giant rubber band, followed by profound stillness. He was still moving, of course, drifting toward the planet ahead of him at a casual 17,000 miles per hour, but the final descent was a walk in the park compared to the past 4.5 minutes he'd spent hurtling through the very fabric of the universe.
At touchdown, the restraints automatically released. Blaine sat up, rolled his shoulders, pulled the silicone from between his teeth, and rattled off a quick message into the slim comms device at his wrist. "This is Blaine Anderson, ambassador deployed for long-term diplomacy with Mission 48. I'm on the ground."
Even with their most advanced systems, the transmission would take hours to reach Earth, and any response would take just as long. Blaine was alone here, and the airlock door was opening.
He shouldered a heavy bag filled with his worldly possessions and stepped out onto the platform below. As his eyes adjusted, Blaine's first thought was that this planet bore remarkable resemblance to the one he intimately knew. Their closest star fought to shine through a dense ring of gases in the outer atmosphere, leaving a sepia hue to the natural light around them. But there was grass, a treeline, the sound of something like birdsong.
Most jarring and familiar of all, however, were the locals here to meet him. Four of them standing abreast, a few feet away. They were indistinguishable from humankind, right down to the modern, business casual outfits they wore. Blaine was about to ask if he was in the right place. Maybe the ship's autopilot had routed him to a planet with an already-established Earth embassy.
"Welcome, Ambassador Anderson. We are very glad to have you here."
Definitely the right place.
Blaine swallowed down the strangeness of the moment and stepped forward, offering his hand and a few pleasantries to each of them in turn. He was met with smiles and firm handshakes. Curiously, every introduction featured a recognizable Earth name beginning with the letter S. There was Sybil, Stewart, and Susan.
The last of the group introduced himself as Sebastian. He reached for the strap of Blaine's bag, pulled it from his shoulder, and passed it off to one of the others to carry. Then he stepped closer and spoke in a low, almost apologetic tone:
"I hope you do not mind the intrusion, but while we researched Earth customs to prepare for your arrival, we worked to familiarize ourselves with you as well." Sebastian glanced down at himself with a critical eye and pursed lips, then met Blaine's gaze once more. "I chose this form with your preferences in mind. I hope it pleases you?"
"I--" Blaine gaped momentarily. A fish out of water. "It's, uh- It's perfectly fine. Wonderful," he stammered. "Thank you."
He was gorgeous, truth be told. A sharp jawline. Keen eyes the color of moss, except when the light hit them in a particular way and revealed hints of hazeled grey and gold. Short hair with an effortless, backswept style. And though Blaine didn't let his eyes wander, his imagination didn't have to do much work to fill in the finer details of the stranger's lithe body beneath the blue button-down shirt and tailored pants.
In physical appearance, Sebastian ticked every box of Blaine's "type." Fantasy incarnate. A man made just for him. What sort of research capabilities did this race possess to be able to pin down such intricate--and private--information from a single human being nearly three million light years away? The 19-page dossier Blaine had stuffed among his possessions was looking more and more pathetic by the moment.
"Your expression suggests you have a question?" Sebastian offered, a kind smile on his face.
"You can change appearance at will?"
"Yes. We can even appear differently to different individuals simultaneously. Our kind identifies one another through-- Humans might call it consciousness? A mental link?" Blaine nodded, understanding. "Which means shifting appearances are of little consequence here. But do not worry; we've each assumed a specific form that your eyes will perceive as unchanging."
"Wow." It was all Blaine could say, lost for words once again, but Sebastian seemed satisfied. Rather pleased with himself, in fact.
"We’ll be meeting with all the major leaders soon, but in the meantime, I would love to show you around."
Blaine waved his hand, inviting Sebastian to lead the way. "Please do."
Still grinning like a schoolboy, Sebastian turned on his heel and linked their arms together like they’d known each other for years, not moments, as they started off down the landing platform and into the unknown.
They bypassed the ground vehicles stationed nearby for a tree-lined walking path instead, angling lazily toward the city center some half a mile away. Two giant, winged insects zipped past them and landed in the grass nearby, chattering away. Not birdsong after all, Blaine realized.
Like the humanoid locals and wannabe birds, the next few hours continued the theme of near-familiarity with a twist. Blaine was definitely not in Kansas anymore. He saw buildings with decorative fountains in their courtyards. A viscous, shimmering liquid cascaded upward and crashed into suspended pools that hovered in the air like gravity's rules didn't apply to them. He saw locals pause as he passed by, no matter how subtle they tried to make their staring. Many of them seemed to have trouble mastering the expressive abilities of their new human faces. They walked around with half-grimaces, perpetually wagging eyebrows, clownish smiles.
"Would you like anything to eat?" The first time Sebastian asked the question, Blaine thought nothing of it, politely declining in favor of furthering his study of a sign posted on a shop door, written in indiscernible runes.
The second time Sebastian asked, Blaine thought maybe he'd just forgotten the first occurence.
The third time Sebastian asked, within the span of an hour, Blaine gave him a quizzical look.
"Do you eat frequently here?" he asked, searching for some explanation. Maybe his presence had already interrupted a slew of mealtimes.
"No, no," Sebastian corrected. "Quite the opposite, actually. We don't."
"At all?" Blaine was dumbfounded.
"No, not at all." Sebastian smirked, almost blushing, as if the discussion of digestion was some strange taboo. "But I can assure your needs will be met while you're here. If ever you're in the state called hunger, please let me know."
Blaine nodded, huffing out a breathy laugh at the absurdity of it all. "I'll do that. Thank you."
Their exploration ended in the heart of the city center, at a building of spectacular scale and riveting architecture. Sebastian identified it as the local hub for politics, law, and public events. Curious statuary decorated the facade--depictions of bipedal creatures whose shape Blaine had never seen in all his travels. Thin, almost reptilian faces, hunched shoulders, six-fingered hands. He wondered if this was the true form of the man beside him or if the art was simply an equivalent to Earth's own misshapen, gothic gargoyles. He didn’t ask.
Sebastian led him inside to a large amphitheater. Representatives and leaders from more than two dozen other localities had come to meet the man from another world. Like those he'd already met on the landing platform, every collection of dignitaries offered him a set of distinctly human names. Each locality had chosen a different starting letter, to boot. Charles, Cynthia, and Cameron. Luke, Landon, and Laura. The general public was here, too, filling out every seat and overflowing to stand in the aisles.
Blaine had a place of honor on stage, with Sebastian on his left.
Speakers came and went, orating primarily in English for Blaine's benefit. As expected, every speech centered on unity. Joining together. Peace and prosperity. Standard diplomatic fare.
But the rest of the ceremony was a little bit strange. He received gifts after each speech, all piling up quickly beside his chair. Unidentifiable trinkets, books written in the runic language, items of clear sentimental value to the people of this world. The planet's leaders shook his hand again and again.
They shook Sebastian's hand, too, which struck Blaine as odd.
There was cheering, applauding, stamping of feet. Blaine felt compelled to stand up several times to accept the applause--the only way to quell the crowd's excitement.
Whenever he stood to wave or bow or otherwise acknowledge the frantic adulation, Sebastian stood, too, which struck Blaine as odd.
The final speaker used the planet's native tongue. The entire crowd stood up, suddenly solemn and quiet. Sebastian stood, too, so Blaine followed suit.
Sebastian took his hand, entwining their fingers, which struck Blaine as odd. He was beaming with excitement, and perhaps a little anxiety. The speaker turned from the podium to face them both, said something with a warm smile and sense of gravitas.
The crowd cheered. The dignitaries applauded. Blaine smiled. Sebastian smiled. And just like that, the event was over. They slipped out through a backstage door to an empty room where a table had been set up with a pair of decorative drinking glasses and an array of decanters filled with beverages. The inhabitants didn't eat, but it appeared they drank.
Sebastian poured them each a glass. Blaine made a toast to lasting goodwill and introduced Sebastian to the custom of tapping drinks together.
"I have to hand it to you," Blaine told him with a laugh, "That was the most enthusiastic diplomacy meeting I've ever attended, in any galaxy."
Sebastian fell uncharacteristically still and silent. His face grew blank, then puzzled. "Meeting?" he asked. "I thought the human term was 'marriage.'"
Blaine coughed on his drink, wheezing, "Marriage?"
"Yes…" Sebastian spoke slowly, unsure. "The union of two individuals from faraway places. It's a custom that has been used to strengthen diplomatic alliances throughout Earth's history, yes?"
Blaine's head bobbed, automatically, yes. The internal, unofficial motto of the Intergalactic Diplomacy Bureau was 'when all else fails, go with the flow.' His brain was too busy shorting out to do anything else. There were no guidelines for something like this.
"Blaine?" Sebastian touched him on the shoulder, his beautiful eyes searching and concerned.
"I'm sorry, would-- would it be alright if I excused myself? I'm feeling a bit tired." An excuse, but not a lie. As the dossier had estimated, the days were clearly longer than those at home. Blaine was starting to feel the strain of his journey.
"Yes. I can show you where you'll be staying."
As before, Sebastian took Blaine by the arm, but his grip was decidedly less earnest. They didn't have to travel far. A room had been put together for Blaine on the top floor of the building, furnished like any decent studio apartment he'd find on Earth, sans kitchen, with an attached bathroom.
"I hope it pleases you?"
"This will be perfect. Thank you."
Graciously, Sebastian left without any prompting. Blaine couldn't even be bothered to close the door now that a king-size bed was staring him down. He dug into his bag, already delivered, and quickly set an alarm on one of the half dozen technological thingamajigs he'd brought along from home. Then he hit the pillows.
Even sleep was a practiced skill for planetary ambassadors. One never quite knew how frequently rest opportunities would occur within an extraterrestrial timeline. Mere minutes of meditation were all took for Blaine to slip away.
Three Earth hours later, he was up again. Blissfully, the sharp shock of an unexpected marriage had been softened and dulled by sleep. Now it felt faintly like a dream or an utterly ridiculous romantic comedy.
Blaine ran a hand through his hair. He should send another report back home. It had been too long already. He unbuckled the comms device from his wrist, twiddling it between his fingers as he started a transmission and began to speak.
"This is Blaine Anderson, reporting in from Mission 48. Approximately," he checked the time, "12 Earth hours underway; local time and duration still unclear--will make a point to clarify that soon. Only one major event to report. Um."
Blaine hesitated, then laughed, beside himself. "I'm a married man? I... Holy shit. Apparently the inhabitants did some deep research on human customs, and arranged marriages was one of the major items that stood out to them? Shortly after arrival, I met who I thought would be my guide--an emissary--and within a few hours, we're at a meeting with all the major planetary leaders in attendance. A meeting slash wedding."
Blaine shook his head as he recalled it. Go with the flow.
"At any rate, things aren't exactly playing out how we anticipated, but I'd say, overall, the mission objective to secure lasting, positive relations between our two worlds is off to an extremely solid start. And Sebastian, the emissary," Blaine couldn't quite put the word 'husband' on his tongue just yet, "is... He seems very kind. Eager to--"
A gentle knock sounded behind him. Blaine turned his head to see a familiar face peeking past the open door.
"I'm interrupting?"
"No, no. Please, come in. I can finish this later." Blaine paused the incomplete transmission and tossed the comms device back into his open bag. Sebastian had come in, but only just. He hovered at the edge of the room. "Is everything okay?" Blaine didn't need a mental connection with him to know the answer. While he'd been sleeping, Sebastian had been stewing.
Sebastian looked at him plainly. "I worry we misinterpreted the purpose of your visit. I hope I haven't made you uncomfortable."
If there was one thing Blaine could get behind with his sudden, new relationship, it was Sebastian's tendency to be completely transparent. There would be no hidden grudges left to fester, no secrets to untangle, no problems he wouldn't be willing to discuss. If his last boyfriend of five years had been even half as forthcoming, Blaine mused, they might've lasted.
"I'm not uncomfortable," Blaine assured him. There was no reason to beat around the bush. He suspected Sebastian could glean hints of information from Blaine's mind just as easily as humans interpreted nuanced facial expressions. "A little surprised, sure, but..."
Suddenly, Sebastian looked more like the foreigner in a distant land.
"Come over here," Blaine suggested. "Sit down with me?"
Sebastian obliged, settling on the edge of the bed, so close their shoulders brushed. Blaine took one of his hands, cupping it between his own. The pad of his thumb rubbed a gentle path over Sebastian's knuckles. Keen empathy and compassion had earned Blaine his respected position in diplomacy. It was second nature to him to reach out, to connect.
"Humans have used marriage as a diplomacy tool. That's true. It’s helped bring families and empires together. Prevent wars, seal political alliances." Blaine spoke softly, trying to explain without patronizing Sebastian or discrediting the efforts of the planet's leadership. "Nowadays, though, at least in most places on Earth, marriage is seen more as a private, social bond.” His voice softened. “What I mean to say is, most people don't get married on the first day they meet. They get to know one another first."
"We can get to know one another," Sebastian offered.
"Of course we can. I'll be stationed here for the next year, at least."
"Three hundred and sixty-five Earth rotations."
Blaine laughed. "Exactly."
They sat in peaceable silence for a minute. Two minutes. Then Sebastian said, "There is one marriage custom I'm particularly curious to try."
"What's that?"
Sebastian pulled his hand free from Blaine's grip, reaching up instead to touch Blaine's face. They looked at each other. Despite all the oddities surrounding him on this alien world, Blaine felt his stomach start to coil and wind, familiar, eager anxiety stealing over as Sebastian leaned in close.
Their lips touched. Blaine sucked in a sharp breath through his nose.
Sebastian had clearly done his homework. He was an enthusiastic study and wasted no time in pressing further, coaxing Blaine's mouth open, slipping just the tip of his tongue between Blaine's teeth. Blaine's reservations collapsed like a house of cards.
He reached out with both hands, finding Sebastian's jawline and tracing it up. His fingers dug into Sebastian's hair. The texture was unnaturally soft, irresistible.
Sebastian's body gave a discernible shiver as he pulled out of the kiss. Blaine opened his eyes. Sebastian's own, just inches away, stared back with heated intensity.
"It does elicit pleasure," he said, like he'd made a scientific discovery. "That's remarkable."
Laughter bubbled up out of Blaine like a spring.

Dumb AC concept ideas
So this is basically a info dump of ideas for potential AC games and concepts that its been playing with in my head, it's mostly me nerding out about junk (look if I can info dump about Teotihuacan I’ll do it.) like it's ideas that I think would be cool and what id want to see in future installments, even if they aren't likely to happen. It's also written super casually cause I started making this in a burst of inspiration at like 2 am and yet still got distracted from it cause I started going on tangents. So it's a bit of a mess. I’m totally down for bouncing ideas around if anyone has their own concepts.
1920’s jazz age assassin from the beginning of unity and the abstergo employee handbook. "The lives and failures of the most degenerate Americans to ever grace the world's stage - Hemingway, Fitzgerald, and Stein." please tell me how this doesn't sound cool as shit? Okokokokokokok SO… CARS. like this dude would have a car (and of course the player can earn different cars and looks for their car and junk, including a yellow Duesenberg… like come on if he knew Fitzgerald they gotta let this dude drive Gatsby's car.)  I think there can be an argument about him having a rope launcher attachment buuut maybe not??? I mean a car and a rope launcher would be dope as hell. The dude probably bounced between Paris and New York if he's a genuine jazz age junkie like how abstergo describes him and his writer pals. Also it would be cool to meet Picasso… also his base of operations should be a fucking speakeasy, like duh, like where else would a 1920’s assassin camp out? I don’t really have any plot ideas but the concept of a jazz age assassin is cool enough for me to want it this badly.
1970’s-1980’s William Miles in a corporate espionage type game, like i know he had Desmond in 1987 but he was an active filed assassin in 1977 when he was in Moscow so clearly he could've been doing other junk around then. It doesn't have to be him, i just want a 70’d-80’s assassin trying to fuck with abstergo and trying to steal animus research or something. Like Alieen Bock died in 81 and that was at the height of animus research before abstergo started really investing in it cause of Vidic. Like the surrogate initiative and the animus project are… basically the same thing really. Like knowing that Altair and Ezio were not actually related until their bloodlines crossed with Desmond. So with the memory keys being cited as an integral part of the animus project they obviously had a role to play in the surrogate project. Besides the newer games are pretty loosey-goosey with how the DNA and animus junk works now, with the spear having DNA traces or whatever and its corrupted enough that we could… choose things?? (don't ask questions just have fun i guess.) ok i’m over thinking this stuff… but come on… disco!!!!! Please please please have a disco assassination. Like… the idea of an assassin taking out a target at the disco is cool enough for me to want it. ALSO!!! If it goes into the 80’s then please for the love of god a Thriller inspired outfit would be to die for. Like i know getting the exact look would be a trademark nightmare but an inspired look may be able to get away with it. I just want some real corporate espionage type missions while dressed in some brightly colored dorky(cool as shit) 70’s/80’s fashion.
So like… ANYTHING from ancient Andean culture. So The Chimú or the Moche… that would be cool, but I'd settle for Wari and Tiwanaku. I just kinda want to see Chan Chan recreated. And Moche art was so fucking good like… idk man they're making video games that are mostly of ancient cultures now so the possibility of them making something in a more modern setting is slim to none. Like come on they're gonna want to make like idk maybe one more really ancient cultural game so they can still reuse assets again before making a whole new saga. That's just their track record. The problem with doing an ancient andean cultural video game is that there isn't a lot to work with other then our knowledge of the architecture and artistry of the ancient peoples. We have art documentary significant events but there isn't really any historical recordings so there's no significant figures to meet or events to take part in that we know of right now. BUT that also means that hey if Ubisoft wants us to have freedom of choice within the narrative this would be a great opportunity.
Speaking of ancient culturesssss ancient Mexican cultures would be REALLY cool too. Like obviously Mayans culture is the first to come to mind but AC already kinda explored the Mayans so idk maybe a more underrated ancient culture deserves the spotlight. The Zapotec and other civilizations in the Oaxaca. Like this would be really cool since we actually see a rise in raiding and conquest warfare, like theres these bas-relief stone carvings called Las Danzantes which are actually depictions of sacrificial victims, most likely foreign captives. The architecture is also to die for like i’m a sucker for talud-tablero style stuff popping up in ancient Latin america. Also do i gotta say it? BALL COURTS!!! A recreation of the ancient ball game in a video game would be cool as shit my dudes like… please i want this so bad. Like how origins depicted mummification with respect I’d love to see the same kind of loving dedication to the funerary practices of the ancient peoples. (off topic completely but some latin american civilizations had their own forms of mummification) like i wanna see the abandonment of Monte Alban and the later use of it by the Mixtecs. But the most important thing about the celebration of the ancient Zapotec would be the ability to celebrate the modern Zapotec culture, that would just be cool. Ok I’ll finish up this train of ideas with the one i really really really want to see recreated, the original Teotihuacan, before the Aztecs found it. With the pyramids being painted and covered in beautiful carvings and, of course, talud-tablero style architecture. It's basically the biggest ancient city in mesoamerica with hidden cave systems that we are still finding today and so much of the ancient city was built over because it might've been covered up or eroded to the point where no one knew it was there, or because there wasn't really anyone who cared enough to uh, not build on top of historical sites. Modern mexico city is built all around and on top of it (apparently you can see Walmart from the top of the temple of the sun…) so its a huge ancient city that was really colorful and really populated with crazy ancient tunnels underneath the pyramids that we’ve only discovered recently so how fucking cool are those possibilities? Like i just can't get over the idea of some assassin-esque person climbing up red pyramids and sitting next to statues and carvings of Queztalcoatl painted in a turquoise. Ancient farms and city life thriving. From what we know about it, like many other ancient latin american cities it was abandoned at some point, exactly why is unclear though (probably a mix of things cause there wasn't any kings really but more like… neighborhood councils (that's the best guess rn)). It was an actual city though, most archaeologists compare it to modern cities due to its city planning and its huge population. What was left behind was so spectacular that when the Aztecs found it they legit thought it was the city of the gods. This was a real fucking city and I’m crazy about it man i want it in a fucking video game my dudes.
COWBOYS PLEASE. Like i know rdr2 came out so they probably wont do it (for a while at least) and they already have the gold rush assassin so they've dabbled with cowboy stuff but… cowboys… like theres nothing else to say really… Cowboys. Also like i know how AC is pretty much ass melee combat and cowboys means guns and lots of guns and bows and probably rope darts. But… folding swords. That my shitty solution to have melee combat, like syndicate had melee and some gun stuff cause duh, but it was mostly melee. Like you can make the game centered around stealth so a lot more sneaking then combat, kinda like in unity. I have a few ideas for this one but most of them play into my own personal cowboy wish fulfillment fantasy of owning a farm with snakes for the production of venoms and other toxins. It's hard to explain but i kinda really want to see someone with a snake/spider enclosure where they produce venoms for the protag to use. The specific time period i have in mind is like 1870-1888 but it could defo go later. It's just that was peak for a lot of famous gunslingers and robberies. And Mesa Verde was basically rediscovered in the late 1880’s (its kinda weird like it was “officially” discovered in 88 but others saw it before that soooo. Also Montezuma Castle would be cool to visit in game as well. I dont have have a lot of knowledge about mesa verde or Montezuma but i know they're cool af.) the wild west is just ripe with possibility so i have some hope they’ll do one in the future but i don't see it happening anytime within the next couple of years.
Please for the love of god give me a AC3/unity dual sequel. Set in 1798 Egypt before during and maybe a little after the french invasion of Egypt. There would be a ton to work around and justify to get that to happen in universe buuuuut… i want it so badly. I have a shit ton of ideas but im saving all of that for a rainy day.
I wouldn't mind if they actually did stuff with WWI, mostly cause i really like that one WWI assassin from project legacy and Lydia's whole thing was really cool.
Ok I’m kinda on burn out after all that cause I just… its 4 AM and i’m supposed to be writing a paper but I made this big fucking oops.

Editing Babies?
By Eric J. Topol, NY Times, Nov. 27, 2018
Dr. Topol is a professor of molecular medicine at the Scripps Research Institute.
Sooner or later it was bound to happen: A rogue scientist in China claims to have edited a gene in two human embryos and implanted them in the mother’s womb, resulting in the birth of genetically altered twin girls. We’re no longer in the realm of science fiction. If true, this hacking of their biological operating instructions, which they will pass on to their children and generations to come, is a dangerous breach of medical ethics and responsible research and must be condemned.
This is not to say that medicine won’t someday employ gene-editing technologies in similar ways. But that time has not arrived. There are still too many risks, too many unknowns, about tinkering with our heritable genetic blueprints.
In recent years genome editing has been appropriately heralded as the most important advance of biotechnology of our generation, and most likely the past century. Known as Crispr, this technique, and related DNA editing tools, enable their users to cut and paste discrete letters of the genome. This ability has markedly advanced science, shedding new light on the complex human genome with its billions of A, C, T and G letters that are the architecture of who we are.
Already, many clinical trials using this technology are underway involving patients with rare diseases like hemophilia, thalassemia and sickle cell anemia. The difference between these efforts and what reportedly happened in China is that these genome editing trials involve cells from the patient’s body. The manipulations are not transmissible to the next generation.
These trials are in their early stages, and we don’t yet have results to show whether this type of editing is safe or provides effective treatment. But whatever happens, the consequences are confined to a patient who has consented to the experimental treatment.
While there have been reports of human embryo editing experiments in laboratory petri dishes, until now, so far as we know, none of these embryos have been implanted in humans. In such cases, the hazards become markedly amplified because the editing intervenes in so-called germ line cells that are transmitted from one generation to another. Conceivably every cell in the body, some 37 trillion, could be programmed with the edits.
In the Chinese study, led by He Jiankui, a physicist, not a medical doctor, on the faculty of Southern University of Science and Technology in Shenzhen, the targeted gene was CCR5, which helps enable H.I.V. to enter cells. While preventing this intrusion might sound like an advance in the fight against AIDS, it is completely unnecessary and may even carry the hazard of increasing the subject’s susceptibility to other types of infection, such as influenza and West Nile fever. Previous genome editing studies have shown it is possible to disable the CCR5 gene in adults without working at the embryo level.
So the experiment was needless. It had no scientific basis and must be considered unethical when balanced against the known and unknown risks.
The predominant risks are the potential impacts of the editing on other letters of the genome, which could induce diseases. We don’t have the assurance yet that Crispr provides laserlike precision in editing--for example, certain important genes for suppressing cancer are particularly susceptible to unintended editing. The way we assess this risk is to sequence the genome before and after editing, to see whether changes were made in genes other than the target gene.
But our ability to discern these changes is still rudimentary, and it is entirely likely that we will miss something. The fact that we may not have seen unintended mutations brought about by editing is by no means proof of their absence.
With six billion letters in the genome that could be affected, the risk of unintended editing is considerable and requires extensive scrutiny to understand and mitigate. That’s partly why the implantation of edited human embryos has been widely banned.
Even beyond the actual editing, this episode appears to have been marked by breaches of scientific conduct. One issue is informed consent. It is unclear whether the parents were told that there were simple ways to protect the embryos from disease that might have been transmitted by the H.I.V.-infected father. If they had known that, why would they consent to this risky procedure?
Moreover, no report by the researchers has been produced for the biomedical community to review. Through a journalist reporting about this, I had the opportunity to see some of the data, and there’s little question that Dr. He at least attempted to edit the genomes of the embryos. But no sequencing data has been presented or independently assessed.
Nor has data been released to show whether the targeted gene was functionally disabled, which would require cell experiments. Science demands such transparency, but all we have is a YouTube video by the researcher, who makes the bold claim that “the gene surgery was safe.”
We don’t know whether the intended human genome editing was achieved in the twins and have no idea whether it will prove to be safe if it was accomplished.
But we can conclude that this was a misguided, reckless use of powerful gene-altering tools to create edited human beings. We should not proceed down this road until we know far more about the consequences of what we are doing.

Asynchronous Design Critique: Getting Feedback
“Any comment?” is probably one of the worst ways to ask for feedback. It’s vague and open ended, and it doesn’t provide any indication of what we’re looking for. Getting good feedback starts earlier than we might expect: it starts with the request.
It might seem counterintuitive to start the process of receiving feedback with a question, but that makes sense if we realize that getting feedback can be thought of as a form of design research. In the same way that we wouldn’t do any research without the right questions to get the insights that we need, the best way to ask for feedback is also to craft sharp questions.
Design critique is not a one-shot process. Sure, any good feedback workflow continues until the project is finished, but this is particularly true for design because design work continues iteration after iteration, from a high level to the finest details. Each level needs its own set of questions.
And finally, as with any good research, we need to review what we got back, get to the core of its insights, and take action. Question, iteration, and review. Let’s look at each of those.
The question
Being open to feedback is essential, but we need to be precise about what we’re looking for. Just saying “Any comment?”, “What do you think?”, or “I’d love to get your opinion” at the end of a presentation—whether it’s in person, over video, or through a written post—is likely to get a number of varied opinions or, even worse, get everyone to follow the direction of the first person who speaks up. And then... we get frustrated because vague questions like those can turn a high-level flows review into people instead commenting on the borders of buttons. Which might be a hearty topic, so it might be hard at that point to redirect the team to the subject that you had wanted to focus on.
But how do we get into this situation? It’s a mix of factors. One is that we don’t usually consider asking as a part of the feedback process. Another is how natural it is to just leave the question implied, expecting the others to be on the same page. Another is that in nonprofessional discussions, there’s often no need to be that precise. In short, we tend to underestimate the importance of the questions, so we don’t work on improving them.
The act of asking good questions guides and focuses the critique. It’s also a form of consent: it makes it clear that you’re open to comments and what kind of comments you’d like to get. It puts people in the right mental state, especially in situations when they weren’t expecting to give feedback.
There isn’t a single best way to ask for feedback. It just needs to be specific, and specificity can take many shapes. A model for design critique that I’ve found particularly useful in my coaching is the one of stage versus depth.
Tumblr media
“Stage” refers to each of the steps of the process—in our case, the design process. In progressing from user research to the final design, the kind of feedback evolves. But within a single step, one might still review whether some assumptions are correct and whether there’s been a proper translation of the amassed feedback into updated designs as the project has evolved. A starting point for potential questions could derive from the layers of user experience. What do you want to know: Project objectives? User needs? Functionality? Content? Interaction design? Information architecture? UI design? Navigation design? Visual design? Branding?
Here’re a few example questions that are precise and to the point that refer to different layers:
Functionality: Is automating account creation desirable?
Interaction design: Take a look through the updated flow and let me know whether you see any steps or error states that I might’ve missed.
Information architecture: We have two competing bits of information on this page. Is the structure effective in communicating them both?
UI design: What are your thoughts on the error counter at the top of the page that makes sure that you see the next error, even if the error is out of the viewport?
Navigation design: From research, we identified these second-level navigation items, but once you’re on the page, the list feels too long and hard to navigate. Are there any suggestions to address this?
Visual design: Are the sticky notifications in the bottom-right corner visible enough?
The other axis of specificity is about how deep you’d like to go on what’s being presented. For example, we might have introduced a new end-to-end flow, but there was a specific view that you found particularly challenging and you’d like a detailed review of that. This can be especially useful from one iteration to the next where it’s important to highlight the parts that have changed.
There are other things that we can consider when we want to achieve more specific—and more effective—questions.
A simple trick is to remove generic qualifiers from your questions like “good,” “well,” “nice,” “bad,” “okay,” and “cool.” For example, asking, “When the block opens and the buttons appear, is this interaction good?” might look specific, but you can spot the “good” qualifier, and convert it to an even better question: “When the block opens and the buttons appear, is it clear what the next action is?”
Sometimes we actually do want broad feedback. That’s rare, but it can happen. In that sense, you might still make it explicit that you’re looking for a wide range of opinions, whether at a high level or with details. Or maybe just say, “At first glance, what do you think?” so that it’s clear that what you’re asking is open ended but focused on someone’s impression after their first five seconds of looking at it.
Sometimes the project is particularly expansive, and some areas may have already been explored in detail. In these situations, it might be useful to explicitly say that some parts are already locked in and aren’t open to feedback. It’s not something that I’d recommend in general, but I’ve found it useful to avoid falling again into rabbit holes of the sort that might lead to further refinement but aren’t what’s most important right now.
Asking specific questions can completely change the quality of the feedback that you receive. People with less refined critique skills will now be able to offer more actionable feedback, and even expert designers will welcome the clarity and efficiency that comes from focusing only on what’s needed. It can save a lot of time and frustration.
The iteration
Design iterations are probably the most visible part of the design work, and they provide a natural checkpoint for feedback. Yet a lot of design tools with inline commenting tend to show changes as a single fluid stream in the same file, and those types of design tools make conversations disappear once they’re resolved, update shared UI components automatically, and compel designs to always show the latest version—unless these would-be helpful features were to be manually turned off. The implied goal that these design tools seem to have is to arrive at just one final copy with all discussions closed, probably because they inherited patterns from how written documents are collaboratively edited. That’s probably not the best way to approach design critiques, but even if I don’t want to be too prescriptive here: that could work for some teams.
The asynchronous design-critique approach that I find most effective is to create explicit checkpoints for discussion. I’m going to use the term iteration post for this. It refers to a write-up or presentation of the design iteration followed by a discussion thread of some kind. Any platform that can accommodate this structure can use this. By the way, when I refer to a “write-up or presentation,” I’m including video recordings or other media too: as long as it’s asynchronous, it works.
Using iteration posts has many advantages:
It creates a rhythm in the design work so that the designer can review feedback from each iteration and prepare for the next.
It makes decisions visible for future review, and conversations are likewise always available.
It creates a record of how the design changed over time.
Depending on the tool, it might also make it easier to collect feedback and act on it.
These posts of course don’t mean that no other feedback approach should be used, just that iteration posts could be the primary rhythm for a remote design team to use. And other feedback approaches (such as live critique, pair designing, or inline comments) can build from there.
I don’t think there’s a standard format for iteration posts. But there are a few high-level elements that make sense to include as a baseline:
The goal
The design
The list of changes
The questions
Each project is likely to have a goal, and hopefully it’s something that’s already been summarized in a single sentence somewhere else, such as the client brief, the product manager’s outline, or the project owner’s request. So this is something that I’d repeat in every iteration post—literally copy and pasting it. The idea is to provide context and to repeat what’s essential to make each iteration post complete so that there’s no need to find information spread across multiple posts. If I want to know about the latest design, the latest iteration post will have all that I need.
This copy-and-paste part introduces another relevant concept: alignment comes from repetition. So having posts that repeat information is actually very effective toward making sure that everyone is on the same page.
The design is then the actual series of information-architecture outlines, diagrams, flows, maps, wireframes, screens, visuals, and any other kind of design work that’s been done. In short, it’s any design artifact. For the final stages of work, I prefer the term blueprint to emphasize that I’ll be showing full flows instead of individual screens to make it easier to understand the bigger picture.
It can also be useful to label the artifacts with clear titles because that can make it easier to refer to them. Write the post in a way that helps people understand the work. It’s not too different from organizing a good live presentation.
For an efficient discussion, you should also include a bullet list of the changes from the previous iteration to let people focus on what’s new, which can be especially useful for larger pieces of work where keeping track, iteration after iteration, could become a challenge.
And finally, as noted earlier, it’s essential that you include a list of the questions to drive the design critique in the direction you want. Doing this as a numbered list can also help make it easier to refer to each question by its number.
Not all iterations are the same. Earlier iterations don’t need to be as tightly focused—they can be more exploratory and experimental, maybe even breaking some of the design-language guidelines to see what’s possible. Then later, the iterations start settling on a solution and refining it until the design process reaches its end and the feature ships.
I want to highlight that even if these iteration posts are written and conceived as checkpoints, by no means do they need to be exhaustive. A post might be a draft—just a concept to get a conversation going—or it could be a cumulative list of each feature that was added over the course of each iteration until the full picture is done.
Over time, I also started using specific labels for incremental iterations: i1, i2, i3, and so on. This might look like a minor labelling tip, but it can help in multiple ways:
Unique—It’s a clear unique marker. Within each project, one can easily say, “This was discussed in i4,” and everyone knows where they can go to review things.
Unassuming—It works like versions (such as v1, v2, and v3) but in contrast, versions create the impression of something that’s big, exhaustive, and complete. Iterations must be able to be exploratory, incomplete, partial.
Future proof—It resolves the “final” naming problem that you can run into with versions. No more files named “final final complete no-really-its-done.” Within each project, the largest number always represents the latest iteration.
To mark when a design is complete enough to be worked on, even if there might be some bits still in need of attention and in turn more iterations needed, the wording release candidate (RC) could be used to describe it: “with i8, we reached RC” or “i12 is an RC.”
The review
What usually happens during a design critique is an open discussion, with a back and forth between people that can be very productive. This approach is particularly effective during live, synchronous feedback. But when we work asynchronously, it’s more effective to use a different approach: we can shift to a user-research mindset. Written feedback from teammates, stakeholders, or others can be treated as if it were the result of user interviews and surveys, and we can analyze it accordingly.
This shift has some major benefits that make asynchronous feedback particularly effective, especially around these friction points:
It removes the pressure to reply to everyone.
It reduces the frustration from swoop-by comments.
It lessens our personal stake.
The first friction point is feeling a pressure to reply to every single comment. Sometimes we write the iteration post, and we get replies from our team. It’s just a few of them, it’s easy, and it doesn’t feel like a problem. But other times, some solutions might require more in-depth discussions, and the amount of replies can quickly increase, which can create a tension between trying to be a good team player by replying to everyone and doing the next design iteration. This might be especially true if the person who’s replying is a stakeholder or someone directly involved in the project who we feel that we need to listen to. We need to accept that this pressure is absolutely normal, and it’s human nature to try to accommodate people who we care about. Sometimes replying to all comments can be effective, but if we treat a design critique more like user research, we realize that we don’t have to reply to every comment, and in asynchronous spaces, there are alternatives:
One is to let the next iteration speak for itself. When the design evolves and we post a follow-up iteration, that’s the reply. You might tag all the people who were involved in the previous discussion, but even that’s a choice, not a requirement.
Another is to briefly reply to acknowledge each comment, such as “Understood. Thank you,” “Good points—I’ll review,” or “Thanks. I’ll include these in the next iteration.” In some cases, this could also be just a single top-level comment along the lines of “Thanks for all the feedback everyone—the next iteration is coming soon!”
Another is to provide a quick summary of the comments before moving on. Depending on your workflow, this can be particularly useful as it can provide a simplified checklist that you can then use for the next iteration.
The second friction point is the swoop-by comment, which is the kind of feedback that comes from someone outside the project or team who might not be aware of the context, restrictions, decisions, or requirements—or of the previous iterations’ discussions. On their side, there’s something that one can hope that they might learn: they could start to acknowledge that they’re doing this and they could be more conscious in outlining where they’re coming from. Swoop-by comments often trigger the simple thought “We’ve already discussed this…”, and it can be frustrating to have to repeat the same reply over and over.
Let’s begin by acknowledging again that there’s no need to reply to every comment. If, however, replying to a previously litigated point might be useful, a short reply with a link to the previous discussion for extra details is usually enough. Remember, alignment comes from repetition, so it’s okay to repeat things sometimes!
Swoop-by commenting can still be useful for two reasons: they might point out something that still isn’t clear, and they also have the potential to stand in for the point of view of a user who’s seeing the design for the first time. Sure, you’ll still be frustrated, but that might at least help in dealing with it.
The third friction point is the personal stake we could have with the design, which could make us feel defensive if the review were to feel more like a discussion. Treating feedback as user research helps us create a healthy distance between the people giving us feedback and our ego (because yes, even if we don’t want to admit it, it’s there). And ultimately, treating everything in aggregated form allows us to better prioritize our work.
Always remember that while you need to listen to stakeholders, project owners, and specific advice, you don’t have to accept every piece of feedback. You have to analyze it and make a decision that you can justify, but sometimes “no” is the right answer.
As the designer leading the project, you’re in charge of that decision. Ultimately, everyone has their specialty, and as the designer, you’re the one who has the most knowledge and the most context to make the right decision. And by listening to the feedback that you’ve received, you’re making sure that it’s also the best and most balanced decision.

White Hat SEO: How To Play By The Rules of Search Engines And Win?
Tumblr media
There are three basic types of SEO, White Hat, Black Hat and Grey Hat. Most of the SEO people use the first type because it is better than the two. It is safe and based on legal as well as ethical methods. People doing SEO with White Hat are always safe and have no issues like suspension, spam, penalties etc.
White Hat SEO is all about playing with Google approved standard rules to optimize your sites for the users. In this type of SEO, focus is the user and not the search engine. When the site, keywords and content is really optimized and user based, search engine also ranks it.
Is White Hat SEO the Best Option?
When it comes to what is the best SEO practice, it depends on what you want to achieve. As said earlier, the three types are different. Let me explain it in brief. White Hat is all about using legitimate methods for optimization, Black Hat focuses on using the illegal ways while Grey Hat has the similar strategies as does Black Hat.
So apparently, White Hat is safe because it is legitimate. But when you start a business and work on White Hat, you get tremendous results. However, there is a lot of competition and the competitors use wrong tactics playing with Black Hat SEO. They can even make better profits and sales. But that is temporary.
You will see them getting banned because Google will sooner or later track it and penalize them. You should only continue with the legal practices of White Hat SEO. It is slow in results but really a safe option and good for the people who want to build a long-term brand or business.
There are a number of other reasons why White Hat SEO is always the best option.
Black Hat is really expensive. Google and other search engines have become really smart and they can detect cheaper tactics.
Black Hat needs technical knowledge. You are supposed to know better than most of the SEO guys. You are going to dodge Google so you got to be really smart.
Lastly, Black Hat has risks and you can get penalized any time. Even people do their best to avoid getting caught but Google can track such techniques and it may happen any time.
We see so many stories and post on social sites with attractive and catchy headlines. These stories carry sensation in titles and headlines but they have something else inside. This is done to get more clicks and increase traffic. This can work for news sites but not for businesses or brands. Google hates clickbait and marks such sites as spam.

Rules of White Hat SEO
The base of the White Hat SEO lies on a number of rules and principles. These rules are actually what make White Hat SEO successful, more dominant and always the best practice. We will talk about the best practices here in this section.
1. Creating a Responsive Website
Have you ever wondered what is a responsive web design? If you don’t know, you are going to learn about it here. This is the first step of White Hat SEO. All you need is a one beautiful website with a responsive design and a great look. It is not necessarily to actually have a well-decorated site.
What a website for White Hat SEO needs is a user-friendly design, instant loading of images, fast page loading, better user experience and maximum facilitation to the users. Moreover, a great and responsive web design also makes SEO easier in the later stages.
2. Keyword Research
This is the stage where the real game starts. There are literally hundreds of brands and websites with same keywords but one will get ranked on top. You have two options, either choose the most competitive keywords and struggle really hard or choose relatively low competitive keywords and get most out of it.
For example, if you have weight loss products, there will be many other brands with same products. The keyword “weight loss” is the target of every brand and they create a tough competition. The short tail keywords are more competitive than long tail keywords. Even Google now suggests long tail keywords.
Finding the best and right keywords needs a lot of research and hard work. You can use online tools, websites, apps, Google search console, online communities and even steal competitors’ keywords.
3. Creating Unique Content
Content is everything when we talk about White Hat SEO. Whole of your game relies on the content. You should brainstorm for content creation ideas, strategies, and how you can make your content interesting as well as informative. Regular blog posts and guest blogging are the essential parts of content creation and strategy.
You must be very unique in content ideas and writing it. Update your website blog three to four times a week, means you need 3-4 new posts in a week for the blog to keep visitors engaged. Secondly, you have to find out relevant niche websites with high domain authority and huge traffic to get backlinks.
The primary and only focus of the content strategy should be the users, not the search engines. User satisfaction, customer engagement, increased readability, and compelling meta descriptions are the traits of great blog as well as guest post content. Use tools, software, websites and help from the experts to create best quality content.
4. Link Building
This is one of the integral parts of White Hat SEO. If you are serious about ranking your site in top search results, you need backlinks. There are a number of methods of link building that really work for White Hat SEO. The Skyscraper technique, broken link building and guest posting are the best methods.
Guest blogging is the primary factor that provides quality backlinks from high authority websites. All you need is to find out the best websites that match your niche. Make sure these sites have good authority and a huge traffic. Get original backlinks to your site or pages with quality content.
What next you can do is to spot all the broken links you did in the past. This is somehow difficult for most of the people. But you can find extensions, apps, and tools that track all of your broken links and help you fix them.
5. Technical SEO
Here you will need some serious effort. It is more about the website design, look, how it performs, its responsive nature, how it facilitates White Hat SEO practices and mobile-first index. These qualities of White Hat SEO make a site really effective and user-friendly.
Mobile-first indexing is the target of most people now. Google also priorities such sites that target mobile-first indexing. For this you need a beautiful and responsive website that is mobile-friendly. Other factors are the speed of the site. You can improve and make your site super-fast.
Never forget to make your site architecture smart. This actually helps in SEO of the site. Your site should treat the customers well and lets them perform every action easily. Lastly make sure there are no bugs or errors. Few pages don’t work and this can be fixed when you keep a regular check on the site.
6. Customer Reviews
Nowadays, no one can underestimate the power of customer reviews. A study found out that 92% customers read customer reviews before making any purchase while 72 customers believe online reviews influence their shopping behavior. You have to invest in customer reviews.
Make your site user-friendly where every customer manages to leave a review. Encourage your visitors and clients to write down reviews so that it can help next customers. However, don’t go after paid reviews. They can never make you retain customers or get more clients for more sales.
Tumblr media
What to Avoid in White Hat SEO?
Everything that is a part of Black Hat SEO or even Grey Hat SEO should not be on your cards when you are working on White Hat SEO. We have listed some of the most important factors that are dangerous and can harm your site.
1. Cloaking
This is a trick used by people for quick and instant results. In cloaking the search engine is deceived. The content shown to search engine is different than the content presented to users. This is totally illegal and unethical. Google penalizes such sites and it can track down cloaking easily.
2. Keyword Stuffing
Keyword stuffing is to use certain keywords in a post or page beyond the limits specified. This was a common practice in the past but now it has been banned. Still many people opt keyword stuffing for instant and better results.
3. Duplicate Content
We have seen that White Hat SEO is all about unique and best quality content. While Black Hat SEO uses copied and plagiarized content. Such people never care about the content. They use others’ content and share on their sites. Google has gone really strict for this action and it doesn’t compromise on content quality.
4. Paid Backlinks
What many do is to buy paid backlinks. They work and offer amazing results. But Google doesn’t like this. It discourages paid backlinks. You are allowed to create natural backlinks through guest blogging otherwise you will be punished with penalties.
5. Clickbait
We see so many stories and post on social sites with attractive and catchy headlines. These stories carry sensation in titles and headlines but they have something else inside. This is done to get more clicks and increase traffic. This can work for news sites but not for businesses or brands. Google hates clickbait and marks such sites as spam.
