Galaxy brained idea that maybe three people will get:

Feanor and Fingolfin with the Noldorin inheritance being identical to that of the Annieran rulers in the Wingfeather Saga, specifically the Throne Warden/High King set-up.

(For non-Wingfeather Saga fans: In Anniera, the crown prince/princess is the SECOND child of the high king/queen, and the eldest child becomes the Throne Warden, whose job is to protect his/her sibling from all harm/guide them in their rule. The Throne Warden is very much honored for their role, but it's made clear from birth that they will never rule.)

(For non-Silmarillion fans: Feanor is the eldest from Finwe's first wife, Miriel, and Fingolfin is his eldest son from his second wife. This is a race of immortals, so remarrying has been unheard-of before this. Feanor hates Fingolfin's guts, and after Finwe dies there's a bit of puzzlement of who actually is the king here?)

So it's basically Malfoy family tradition to only have one kid per generation to avoid splitting the inherited wealth. But what happens if that firstborn kid is a daughter? Do they have her keep her maiden name after marriage and insist on passing it to their children over her husband's to keep the family name from going extinct? Try again until a son is born, and then marry all previous daughters to wealthy pureblood houses where the Malfoys won't have to let them inherit any money because they already have their husbands'?

The Malfoys and Sons and Caveats

To be fair, we don't know that this is the case.

The way things are in canon, we don't even know if Lucius is the only son or if he has brothers who don't get mentioned for some reason or sisters who were married off and also don't get mentioned.

JKR has drawn a tree for those interested in Pottermore things in which it's a hilarious single line, but that could be because she was only drawing the sons and not the daughters/wives.

@therealvinelle and I buy into the "they have only one son, somehow, every time" bit because it's hilarious and means that all of them are weirdly similar to each other one generation to the next, and that they have to be doing something to make sure this keeps happening, but it's mostly for the lulz/storytelling and not because I couldn't go either way.

The Malfoys Have a Firstborn Daughter

The obvious caveat here is that, since we never saw this, I really don't know. My guess is as good as anyone's.

But to go ahead and guess...

Probably depends who the father is/what the circumstances are. If the wife was very unlikely to have a second child, then there's the age old dilemma of "oh no, the line ends with me" that could be solved in a number of ways. One is the adoption of a close family member so they take on the line, one is an illegitimate child from the line becoming heir, and the other is "THIS IS MY SON NOW", or just suck it up and deal.

I think it having to be a blood relative would be very important to the Malfoys given their staunch belief in blood purity. Can't exactly remain the Malfoys if the line/your magical abilities died out, can you? It's more than just the name that wizards care about, it's all about genetics (which leads to these kinds of problems and more).

Though they do also seem to care about the surnames in that people take great pride in the patrilinear line, e.g. Draco being a Malfoy, Ron being a Weasley, so on and so forth. So, it probably wouldn't be good enough of "ah, the line lives on through my daughters in another family".

If a second child is possible or else likely, I imagine they do the normal thing and try until they get a son who inherits the name and, as you noted, most of the money/assets beyond whatever it is wizards do for dowries/if they do dowries.

Relationship: Family - Ted Bridges

Martha Bridges † - Ted's mother. She was a gentle, kind woman who loved her family very much. She spent the majority of her life working as a guidance counselor for teenagers and young adults, helping to solve some of the mental and psychological problems that they often were affiliated with. When she retired, she still tried to help young people by writing self-help books. She sadly passed away whilst writing her third one.

Ted Bridges, Sr. † - Ted's father. Like his son, he served in the army and wanted to serve for the vast majority of his life. However, his marriage, along with a wound received in battle, sidelined him for the rest of his life. To compensate, he wrote a book on his theories on war and the ethical dilemmas and circumstances surrounding it. His work was awarded the Distinguished Book Award, which established him as an effective writer. He planned to write another book, but his wife's passing cost him his motivation. He passed a year after her.

Janet Shimizu † - An Amerasian who was born to a Japanese woman and a U.S. military serviceman. She and Ted bumped into each other by accident, as the Canadian man was trying to find his way around Okinawa. Seeing his confusion, she helped him find his way to where he was going. This small meeting would soon turn into something larger as they kept seeing each other around the city. Eventually, Ted asked her to marry him, which she accepted, bearing him a son. She was approached by Chuohku for a high-paying job at one of her labs. Though her husband was skeptical, she accepted. This would prove to be her last mistake as she was unfortunately killed during a workplace accident. Ted keeps a gold heart-shaped locket containing a picture of her and him in his coat pocket as a reminder of her.

Aiden Bridges (15 Years Old) - Ted's son, and the only family he has left. He is a timid and gentle lad who has never harmed a living being in his whole life. In fact, much like his mother, he respects Mother Nature and the creatures that live in it. Besides her looks, he appears to have also inherited his mother's "gift" to speak with animals, which is why Ted always instructs him not to use his gift out in the open, because he doesn't know who's watching or listening. He loves his father dearly but often wishes that he wouldn't be so overprotective.

The Magical Revolution of the Reincarnated Princess and the Genius Young Lady (Review; Contains Spoilers)

In the Kingdom of Palettia, we follow an odd princess named Anisiphia. Ever since she was a child, she loved magic, but she was unable to use it herself. However, thanks to her memories of her past life, she uses her knowledge to create several devices with the hopes of achieving her lifelong dream: to fly.

During one of her test runs, she accidentally crashes her broomstick and witnesses her brother Algard publicly renouncing his arranged marriage to Euphyllia choosing a commoner over her. With her reputation in flames, Anis interferes and decides to "take Euphyllia away."

Thus begins the story of The Magical Revolution of the Reincarnated Princess and the Genius Young Lady which was based on a series of light novels. So, my thoughts?

Positives:

The animation is pretty good. As are the OP and ED themes.

While I will get into more of the problems with the characters, found a good bunch of them likable.

Voice work is good especially when it goes into making a character sound emotionally wrecked.

The Negatives:

Worldbuilding is weak. For instance, there comes a point where there was a way for Anisiphia to avoid inheriting the throne which, naturally throws her into conflict with Euphyllia. A lot of this does come from the result of truncating for time or omitting moments from the light novels. Oftentimes, scenes get boring likely because of all the political talk on who inherits the throne and all.

The characters are static and ultimately are back in the places where they were introduced. Anisiphia, while she makes up several of the comedic moments of the anime, is an example. With her, we know that her main motivation is to "fly" and that she loves magic due to her memories of her past life. Beyond that, she never really gets into conflict that would seriously make her reconsider.

In the penultimate episode, we have Anisiphia truly being in a dilemma: due to a convoluted series of events, she is once more in line to be queen. This could have been a chance for Anisiphia to grow as a character. She is in a position where she has a heavy weight on her shoulders and thinks becoming queen would be her atonement for the mistakes she had done. This would mean that she would have to grapple with whether that meant ending her research something that gave her joy, but perhaps it was in the kingdom's best interest for her to stop living in her fantasies. Or what if she made it to where she could implement her research in her rule?

All those interesting questions are literally solved the moment Euphyllia interjects. Speaking of her...

Euphyllia was established as being someone who was molded to be "perfect" as in doing what was expected of her instead of making her own choices and we see the conflict of that once her reputation was tarnished. She is even asked this directly by Tilly. So...my issue?

Because of the deus ex machina I have mentioned, she can inherit the throne so that way, Anisiphia would not have to lose what she loved. I'm sorry...what? I know that the anime tries to say "she was making her own decision and she wanted Anis to be happy." But that is not making her decision for herself, that is making decisions for someone else. She is living for Anis not herself.

Worse is that she does not console Anis on this rash decision and seemed to not think much about it. Except for the fact that should she become a spirit, not only will she be immortal, but she will forget even her memories of being human including her time with Anis. How did she think Anis would be happy that Euphyllia was making that huge a sacrifice?

The other characters are hit-or-miss, but mostly "hits." Ilia is a deadpan snarker of a maid who tends to get annoyed with Anisiphia's antics. Laine, the girl that Algard chose over Euphyllia, and Tilly, who is probably the best one. She is the vitriolic best friend of Anisiphia and her polar opposite: while Anisiphia loves magic, Tilly sees it as a curse. She is also likely the only one who truly understands her.

The anime can also have times where the emotions are contrived though I did find myself pitying some of the characters despite that.

Tale of the Girl Kent

One evening years ago, twin cries could be heard in Metropolis. These cries belong to Jonathan Samuel Kent and Marinette Martha Ella Kent, newborn children of Lois Lane and Clark Kent. They grew up together for quite some time, and people around them could swear they never saw one without the other.

Ever since a young age, Jonathan, or Jon as people call him, discovered that he had inherited his father's superpowers. Flight, super hearing, super speed, heat vision, x-ray vision, and etc. Marinette on the other hand doesn't have these superhuman abilities. She does, however, have an incredibly sharp eye for detail, astonishing creativity, unimaginable problem-solving skills, and an IQ that is already considered a genius, 184. Even though she was born without mystical abilities, Marinette never felt jealous of her twin. Howbeit because of this, her father decided not to tell the rest of the league, short of Batman and Wonder Woman.

When the twins turned nine, Lois and Clark felt like they were neglecting their little girl, focusing more on teaching Jon how to handle his powers. Marinette didn't mind and she had told them this repeatedly.  But then again, they're parents, they're supposed to worry. As a result, they decided to reach out to Lois' old college friend and roommate, Nadja Chamack. They told her of their dilemma and asked if she knew anyone who could and would take care of their daughter. Nadja mentioned a married couple whom she has known since high school. She said that they had wanted a child but the doctor said they couldn't have one. Of course, Nadja also mentioned that the couple were really kind people, they would never take their place as parents. They would, however, be pleased to be their daughter's guardian.

And that's what happened. Marinette flew to Paris the next week to live with her new guardians, leaving a teary eyed father and brother behind, not like they would admit it. She soon found her guardians' names are Tom Dupain and Sabine Cheng. She could've sworn she stared at the sun when they picked her up.

As time went by, Marinette got very comfortable with the Dupain-Chengs to the point she slipped and called them maman and papa. She told her biological parents about this and they were glad she felt safe enough to call them that. Both didn't have anything against Tom and Sabine because of that and Marinette was really glad.

Let's jump to when she turns 13. She finds a mysterious box on her desk and opens it. When a flying creature flew out of it, Marinette wasn't really surprised. She had seen weirder things. Then the creature, who she found out was named Tikki, started explaining that she was chosen to be a hero to save Paris. "Figures that I'm made to join the family business," she said. Tikki just blinked, "What do you me-" she was cut off by a shout. "Kim!" a voice roared. "You can explain this to me later, right now just say spots on," Tikki said.

Once the 'akuma' was handled, Marinette told Tikki of her biological family. "Hey Tikki?" "Yeah?" "Do you think I should call the Justice League? Not to ask them for help, more like... Tell them of they are going to Paris to keep their emotions in control? I don't think I can defeat my dad or my brother." "That's a great idea Marinette! Although I suggest that you ask Chat Noir for his opinion first." And here she is now on the Eiffel Tower with Chat, trying to call the League.

Ironically, Superman answered. "Hello, this is the Justice League. How may we help you." "Hello, my name is Ladybug and this is Chat Noir," it felt so weird using formal talk with her dad, "We wanted to inform you of Paris' new situation as of yesterday." At the word Paris, Superman's froze, Mari lives there. "A supervillain has appeared and it turns people into villains to do the dirty work. It appears that the supervillain transforms them if someone has a negative emotion. Hawkmoth, the supervillain, and us get our powers from the miraculi," Ladybug continued knowing that her dad knows about the miraculi. "We came to ask if any of you were to come to Paris make sure that your emotions are under control," Chat said, "We don't need to fight any of you."

"I can accept that, I have heard of the miraculi and it seems reasonable," Superman said, "If I'm correct, any damage should be reversed. No civilians should be hurt, am I right?" "Figures he'd be worried about me," Ladybug mumbled forgetting that her dad had super hearing and pieced everything together. "My cupcake?" he asked. Ladybug's eyes widened before she started laughing, "Damn it, forgot you had super hearing." Superman grinned, "Looks like you're in the family business anyway huh?" "Seems like it."

Chat stood on the side wondering why are the two so comfortable with each other. "Guess I owe you an explanation huh Chat?" Ladybug said, "Superman here, is my biological father and the current Superboy is my twin brother. Unlike him, I didn't inherit dad's powers." Meanwhile, on the other side of the line, Clark called for his son and told him the news. "Hiya sis!" "Hiya little brother!" "You're only older by 5 minutes!" "I'm still older!" Chat laughed at their banter, "I can see that now."

"Just hold on a minute, I can register your partner and change your name and you can zeta on over to discuss this more," Superman said, "Also, I missed you." "I miss you too." Once Superman gave them the okay, Ladybug disconnected the phone and dragged Chat over to the zeta platform (I have little knowledge of this so feel free to correct me) They ended up at the Watchtower and Ladybug hurriedly ran to her father and brother giving them a big hug. "Superman have you seen-" Wonder Woman stopped when she saw Ladybug hugging her colleague. She ran out of the room to grab someone to make sure she wasn't hallucinating, that person happened to be Batman, and wherever Batman goes, 16 year old Robin follows.

"You are seeing this too right? That's his daughter right?" Wonder Woman asked. "Yes I am, and most likely." Meanwhile, Robin was just confused, who was this girl and... Is that a knockoff Catwoman? But since Batman appeared not to think of her as a threat he let it slide, that is until their eyes met. His heart skipped a beat. Her eyes are so beautiful. Superboy heard Robin's heartbeat picking up and smirked because it wasn't only Robin's heart, but also his sisters. Both speeding up but still somehow in sync. They are going to date each other if it's the last thing I do.

I always imagine how amazing it would be to have the power to express one’s thoughts so easily. I notice whenever I am lost, all I want to do is write it down with the hope of maybe, just maybe, if I can lay it on the table, my thoughts would not be so tangled and sad. Cause if you can easily express it, then you can analyze it, figure out what is wrong, and inevitably solve it sooner or later. 

But that is not the point why am I writing now, I am currently on the latter part of my vacation. In two weeks, classes will resume. I remember as a child I love vacation so much. No lessons to prepare, no anxiety with school works, and having all the free time for yourself. However, growing up, I do not love vacations as much as I love it before. All this free time gives me free time to think, and man, thoughts can be really scary. But it is not like I always overthink, especially when I spend time with friends and watch animes in between. Oh, I just finished watching Naruto Shippuden. It was so amazing. How can someone think of those background stories per character. Everything was a masterpiece. But, I think it would be so different if I watch it when I was younger. When I’m less miserable with life I mean. I remember watching Alice Academy when I was young and how convinced I am that I am the protagonist in real life. and how I watched Dragon Balls and also being convinced that I am Son Goku. I remember I was at the back of our house and screaming like how saiyans did trying to unlock my saiyan form. It was fun being convinced like that. But going back with naruto, man, I cried hard. There are these intricate emotionally-woven words that always get me no matter how many times I hear them. and to top it off, the strategy of naruto is to give u this dilemma that no one is ever bad. It’s just these villains are also heroes but failed, unrecognized, kind heroes.  Have you ever felt that when u watched inspiring scenes, that it gets through you so hard, and you think you can change the world like those characters did. Problem with getting older, is that only lasts for minutes. Not long enough like how I was convinced that I am Goku for weeks during my childhood. Also, I noticed watching anime now makes me feel shitty with myself. Even though those characters are not real of course. But yeah, I just feel shit cause obliviously, I compare it to my life. and damn, all those screamings with son goku sessions did not prepare me on how hard my heart screams right now. But that’s another story. Cause I do not want this to be a sad discussion.

Oh yeah going back to Naruto. My favorite backstory was with Mighty Guy-sensei. He’s a good one. I always know I am an Itachi guy but wow guy sensei that guy just pierced my soul. He and his dad proves that effort is effort. But I already know that I mean, that effort is effort. Cause you know I was not born smart, pretty, sexy, appealing and other wonderful stuff that makes people amazing. It’s hard to admit at first that you are just mediocre especially if all your life youre trying to be son goku  hahahah. But yeah, I am just super regular. But yeah, that is true though, that effort is effort. I am 26 years old and honestly, most of my life, with confidence( not being cocky) I have been putting so much effort... cause effort is effort. and it reaps off. I was at the top of my class since nursery. My cousins play while I am locked up studying. Everyone knows that I am the smartest not only in my family but in my clan. Even the neighbors know. haahahah They said that my dad was super smart so I inherited some genes u see. hahaah. Also my mom was super scary and strict when it comes to studying. I remember I was so scared when I was in grade 6 that I cheated. I change my score cause my mom needs to sign it. But it was not always like that, I had so much fun growing up. I think if I wouldnt groom like that, I would not be a nice kid. or hardworking, or patient, or with determination. I’m kinda glad that my mama raised me that way. Even though 90 percent of my childhood Im resenting them for pressuring me so hard. But that’s the thing about growing up,  u realized stuff.  

I dont know why I talk about that part of my childhood which is a total diversion from the topic I wanna write about. But yeah, let’s keep that part. Going back to “effort is effort”, I put effort not only in studies but also with people. I have a lot of friends. I always think this is my best skill. I can befriend anyone and anything. I talk to dragonflies and insects growing up and considering them as friends. I dont know, it might sound weird with others, but I value life. It is on the premise that I think everyone is just trying to survive, and I think those dragonflies are good in surviving more than I do. All I do is bluff and endure. hahahha Endure is such an emotional word for me. I also think I am enduring so much all my life. I want to contextualize it more and tell stories about how I “endure” but I hope it’s okay to be upfront now and tell  directly that Im enduring so much and Im so sad and I hope one day i will not be enduring anymore and I can be myself and I dont have to put a tough, smile, warm persona everytime cause tbh im dead cold hahah and its ok to be dead cold and tell that im hurting and im not ok 

but yeah that wont happen so I guess ill have to endure more and more haha

Sorry for that part, but going back to my story, i really do put a lot of effort with people. Even with the smallest stuff I consider them more rather than my feelings. Its not like im trying to be nice and be a hero but i just couldnt help it. I just want others to be comfortable cause I know that they are also enduring u see. All of us do. Hmm but its funny how most people think im good with people but thinking about it, if im so good with people that everyone just considers me an option. People choose other people, but with me, im just a brocolli on the plate. Not the main meal but just something to compliment the meal hahaah. but again, brocollis are nice and it makes u healthy thats whty i hate it so much on  why am i getting sad about it. Mostly im grateful cause im still on the plate, but sometimes i just want to be left on the ref and rot there and neglected at all rather than being used just to compliment something. hahaha

People don't want to admit TLJ wasn't perfect either. Rian gave way too much screentime to the side characters and their storyline. I love Kelly, but even Rose had more screentime than Adam, the protagonist, who played the Skywalker in the Skywalker Saga. FinnRose took over the "Reylo" screentime. The main romance. Literally. Rian directed Leia as an ignorant mom who cares more about Poe then her own child. Pple give him too much credit. Kylo even had less s.time in TLJ than in TFA ffs🙏

I’m not one of those people. I’ve always said that TLJ isn’t perfect, you can scroll back, but it was genuinely good, thoughtful, and sincere which is more than can be said for the rest of the st. It’s thematically on point, it understands sw, it’s full of life, and it made it briefly appear that LF knew exactly what they were doing with the basic emotional outline even if the execution could have been a lot better.

I’d just... have to take issue with some of your reasoning. Ben is the thematic centre of the story, but he was not the protagonist. Rey is the protagonist. We can discuss why she isn’t a good protagonist and why she has no business being the protagonist if the point of her journey isn’t to save Ben (the Skywalker) with unconditional love, but that inarguably is her position in the narrative.

I agree he should have had more screentime, though quantity isn’t everything. The weight of his presence dominates the entire Force plot and drives all of Rey’s character development, so it feels like he has more content than he actually does, but definitely a few more intimate moments would have greatly benefited the story. I’m not going to rail on Rian too much for the structural issues the film has, because he was written into numerous corners by the slapdash nature of TFA which left him a lot of difficult problems to solve and he was obviously trying to be as respectful as humanly possible both to his predecessor and his successor. He left the plot wide open and trusted LF to finish the character arcs he’d built without having their hands tied, which he shouldn’t have in retrospect. He was trying to have TLJ be its own film with its own identity as well as backinterpreting TFA into coherent arcs for both the OT characters and the new characters and it’s too much to deal with.

Leia treats Poe like what he is- a subordinate whom she likes. There’s no competition to be drawn between that relationship and her feelings towards Ben- she is not Poe’s mum and doesn’t ever act like his mum. I’ve discussed the lack of intimacy between Ben and the OT characters a couple times, but TLJ is still a massive improvement over TFA, a lot of it is again inherited structural wonkiness, and if she were to reach out to him a third time there’d be no final movie because he would have come home. The Ben/Leia and Ben/Luke relationships are set up to be fleshed out/resolved later as Ben becomes more receptive and able to consider forgiveness, they just never were.

Some of this is also a problem with how sw movies work, what their priorities are and how they treat serious drama (as giant tableau moments, not with psychological realism), and I’m not going to single TLJ out for something that is consistent across the entire franchise. He could have done more, but if the foundation had been strong he wouldn’t have had to and he shouldn’t have had to (for Leia, that is, we can blame him for the lack of emotional content in Luke’s relationship with Ben, but the film already spends huge amounts of time on Luke and it’s not feasible for him to discuss this with Rey so I can see the dilemma he must have had). The main emotional threads being in separate post codes was a hard thing to overcome without having Leia just sit down and exposit about her feelings. This would have been solved by a good third film that brought the threads together in the first act.

The Fathier chase is too long and that would be time better spent on nearly anything else, won’t argue there. But Rose is a key character who gives the thesis statement of the film and her substantive screentime is not misplaced. Less substantive stuff could have been trimmed, sure.

The whole st is... unfocussed... and there was only so much that could ever be mitigated by anyone coming in after the fact, no matter how talented. Under the circumstances, I find TLJ’s weaving of straw into gold very, very impressive and I am going to keep giving Rian a tonne of credit for that.

The Zeke problem seems to be a meta problem from Yams. It seems to me Isayama doesn't know how to solve the Zeke being killed (cheap) fanservice AND make Falco fly at the same time without even eating the Beast Titan. Its like Isayama is struggling with what to do with Zeke, and you cannot give ethic lessons in your manga whole trying to figure out a way to kill Zeke. I believe Zeke will join Levi, but his delayed presence in the manga looks more like Isayama scared to actually develop Levi

Sorry for the long post, I am mostly rambling. I agree that it is a meta problem on Isayama’s part. 

He is especially having troubles with his characters in this final arc, I feel. Aside from the fact that he admitted he doesn’t know what actions the characters will take, which is...uh, weird, because it means he doesn’t have a clear vision for each character arcs, or isn’t especially thinking about their overall meaning, in my opinion, and it shows... Well, aside from that, I feel like Isayama has been struggling with showing a natural development for all his characters, as of late.

Particularly, the ending of the characters who have already received one has been all over the place, or not properly set up most of the times. I’m talking about the most recent deaths of Magath, Hange and Shadis, which felt more like ISYM didn’t have a use for these characters in future chapters, so he just conjured some rushed message up, quickly wrapped them in it, and got rid of them. In particular, I got this feeling with Magath, but mostly with Hange - the author didn’t know how to keep Hange in the story, so he offed them to benefit the vision he had for another one (Armin).

The same happened with Porco, who seemed to “be” a character mostly because someone had to inherit the Jaw long enough for them to pass it, at one point, to Falco, but I’ll give Isayama that at least Porco wasn’t a part of the story since the beginning as Hange was, and his death felt very fitting for his character.

Isayama has always had problems with endings, though, and I mean with ending a character’s life: just think back on Mike, whom, he admitted, he killed off too soon; Ymir, one of the most interesting characters in my opinion, who got offed off-screen for the simple reason that she knew too much at a moment where ISYM didn’t want to reveal certain cards. Bertolt’s death (or rather, the aftermath) was also treated poorly.

The remaining cast has also been suffering from a lack of steady, organic character development:

Mikasa was written in a way that won’t allow her development until she confronts Eren, so she’s been mostly on stand-by for a whole arc.

Armin, similarly, isn’t changing at all, is constantly faced with chances to grow and overcome certain setbacks, but it’s obvious this will happen only when he will face Eren head-on. His deathwish (ch.126?) was never developed and was sprung on us for dramatic effect - contrary to Reiner’s, which felt organic and had good built-up.

But Reiner’s arc in itself is all over the place too, in my opinion, though it’s marginally better than others.

Half of Connie’s plot line (avenging his family by killing Zeke) has been canceled out of the story because I suppose it would be too bothersome for Isayama to write, and the remaining half was resolved in one chapter, in a cheap and cheasy way that felt like snuffing out a candle after seeing it burn for a while. “Dark!Connie” was a super interesting concept, a natural development since Clash of the Titan arc, his indignation and pain finally reaching a peak gave a breath of fresh air to such a background character. Such a shame.

Levi has been stuck on the same few lines and opinions for the whole arc, being offered some chances of self-reflection, but getting nothing, no change out of it (though this is a constant in his character arcs and it feels very awkward). A big chunk of who he was was also reduced to the barest of bones.

Historia... well... her few appearances barely had any agency, and the parts where she was allowed to speak were an incoherent mess that still needs explaining. Many feel she was reduced to a plot device, which is very poor writing if most of the fanbase feel this way about such a great character.

Hange, again, was presented with a VERY interesting dilemma, and it was solved (more like, a resolution was avoided) by offing them.

Sasha was used for thematical moments, and killed for it.

Gabi IS a thematical character, so her presence was rather compelling after all, though at times her character arc was so on the nose it felt awkward.

Annie...I’m unsure. She was kept out of the story until the last moment only to have a very interesting crisis, culmination of her many struggles, from when the series had solid characters, only to muddle it with uncalled-for romance, that wasn’t even particularly impactful on any of the characters involved. I used to think romance in this manga had purpose and enriched the characters, taking yumihisu as the only example, but I was wrong, and it’s just some cheap little drama.

Eren...his development has been so obscure and his behavior so out of left field and confusing, that the fandom - and Isayama - have said it’s the new mystery of the story. 

All this to say that Character consistency and plausibility have been suffering for the whole arc. Zeke’s writing, in retrospect, has been consistent. ISYM has set up some interesting themes, dilemmas and ideas with him, as well as a natural progression and built up to a solution to them, but he’s stalling in their resolution, or rather, actualization.

Maybe it’s because there are too many characters, maybe it’s because he needs to get to the point Zeke can be relevant again, but compared to other characters’ treatment, I find the stalling re:Zeke way more believable, as it started the moment his existence was overcome by Eren’s in Paths. Other characters, who should play an active role, are simply moved from one point to the next with barely any real “content” to them and their psychology. 

tl;dr: Isayama set them up to follow a certain direction, but he’s struggling with its delivery, because he had to stall it in order to make it happen at the right moment - which coincides with the end. But this makes them appear static and weak presences in the story, and the plot a chore that has to be painstakingly unraveled. Characters and plot aren’t working as a single unit.

Going back quickly to the issue between Zeke and Levi, I haven’t had the impression Levi will get what he wants in regards to Zeke since Zeke escaped the very first time in Shiganshina. So I am not sure if it’s been my wishful thinking all along, or what, but I have always thought the fandom is drunk and should go home about this particular topic XD I don’t think ISYM is setting up Levi to kill Zeke, at least not in the way that the fandom (and Levi) wishes. Hints that it cannot happen have always been stronger than the opposite, to me.

But I will say that everyone’s behavior towards Zeke is written very weirdly - I mean, they allied and could find it in themselves to mostly forgive Reiner and Annie (AND PIECK! why does nobody acknowledge what Pieck did?!) even though 20 chapters ago they brought an all out attack from Marley to Paradis, and yet, even if they know what Zeke went through, they cannot spare a single humanizing thought about him. Maybe it’s because of his plan, but I cannot imagine is worse than Marley and Reiner calling for Paradis extintion or Eren for the world’s. So I cannot tell if it’s a meta issue (Isayama’s messy writing) or if he’s purposely potraying them to be hypocrites, or if it’s just a very awkward transition that needs to happen between “using Zeke as a scapegoat” and “acknowledging that it’s Eren that needs to be stopped directly, no easy escape route on this”.

The Female Brain

Last time I was here I wrote about “The Happiness Hypothesis” by Johann Hari (read below). This time I am going to write about Louann Brizendine’s (M.D.) “The Female Brain”.

In the initial courting phase of romance, men are often the chasers and women are the choosers. Darwin once noted that males from all species are made for wooing females, and females typically choose from among their suiters. The brain has an architecture of love engineered by the reproductive winners in evolution. The truth is, we are much more predictable than we think. Over thousands of years, our brains have developed a system for choosing the healthiest mates. I know what some of you are thinking. “I think my brain might not have downloaded those files.” I can relate. According to Dr. Brizendine, some of the attributes that a women’s brain is consciously or subconsciously looking for in a partner are: resources (not only monetarily but resources in time investment) and commitment. Lessons learned by our early ancestors are deeply encoded in our modern brains. These can be described as love circuits that are present by the time we are born, and activated at puberty by “fast-acting cocktails of neurochemicals. It is an elegant system.” Our brains make assessments (yes I used that word, you know who you are :p) about a potential partner and if he/she fits our ancestral wish list, we get a surge of chemicals that intoxicate our brains and focus our attention on this subject that fits our minds archetype. 

We fall in love or infatuation and it is the first step down the ancient pair-bonding path. Inside our cranium is a stone age brain (no offense). More than 99% of our millions of years of existence have been spent living in primitive conditions. Our brains have adapted to solve the problems that early humans encountered. One of the most important challenges that early humans faced was reproduction. Not only having children but ensuring that those children survived long enough to perpetuate their genes. Those whose mating choices produced surviving generations succeeded in passing on the circuitry that we have in our modern brains today. According to Evolutionary Psychologist David Buss, women worldwide look for the same ideal qualities when selecting a long term mate. For over 5 years Buss studied the mate preferences of more than 10 thousand participants from over 37 cultures around the world. From Germans, Taiwanese, Mbuti pygmies to Aleut Eskimos. What he discovered was that in every culture women are less concerned with a potential suiter’s visual appearance and more interested in his material resources and social status. Even women at the highest levels of economic and social status (able to provide for themselves and their partners) preferred partners who were able to provide, contribute and match them in status. Buss found that in all 37 cultures females held these attributes in high regard much more than their male counterparts. Researchers have also found that women choose mates who are on average 4 inches taller and 3.5 years older. Statistically, these female mate preferences appear to be universal. Based on these findings “scientists have concluded that they are part of the inherited architecture of the female’s mate choice system and are presumed to serve a significant purpose.” According to Robert Trivers a pioneering Evolutionary Biologist at Rutgers University, This overall system for mate selection is a savvy investment strategy. 

When it comes to love, the investment made on the part of a woman is often much greater than that of the male. Males can impregnate a woman with one act of intercourse and walk away. Women, on the other hand, are left with 36-42 weeks of pregnancy, “the perils of childbirth, months of breastfeeding, and the daunting task of trying to ensure that child’s survival.” it makes sense they would have evolved to choose a partner that is likely to stick around and contribute beyond that initial act. Another blog could be written on the dilemma of choosing partners based on attraction vs reliability. The age-old debate of Mr/Mrs right vs Mr/Mrs right now. I have a lot to say about that but we have to land this plane relatively soon! Also, let me voice the fact that I’m a little uncomfortable speaking to the female experience. I am relying on the diligent research provided by Dr. Louann Brizendine (M.D.) I am excited to hear the feedback I get from all my smart friends and readers. 

Ok, so what do men want. According to Buss, something completely different. Worldwide men are more interested in having physically attractive wives between the ages of 20-40 who are an average of 2.5 years younger than them. They want potential long term mates to have clear skin, bright eyes, full lips, shiny hair, and curvy hourglass figures. These attributes hold true in all the cultures that were studied. This seems to indicate that it is part of men’s hard-wired inheritance from their ancient forefathers. As superficial as this sounds, one explanation for this is that men (consciously or unconsciously) are choosing based on indications of female fertility and the biggest reproductive payoff for their investment. Evolutionary Psychology states that over millions of years male brain wiring evolved to scan for visual cues for fertility. She apparently has an ancient and evolutionarily developed lie detector that we do not possess. I can vouch for it too. 

A final word on love. Beware! Neuroscience research has shown that once a person is in love, the amygdala (the brain’s fear alert system) and the anterior singlet cortex (the brain’s worrying and critical thinking system) are turned way down, sharing many similarities with the effects on the brain of someone taking ecstasy. The cautious critical thinking pathways in the brain are also shut down. According to Dr. Brizendine, falling in love is one of the most irrational behaviors or brain states for both men and women. The brain becomes illogical and blind to the shortcomings of their lover. This brain state shares brain circuits with states of obsession, mania, intoxication, thirst, and hunger. The parts of the brain that become activated in this state match those seen in drug addiction. This is why I think breakups can be so devastating and the possible topic of my next blog!  We did it! Part of Worlds Gone Wrong series

The plot goes as follows: Fourteen years ago Damocles of Red king Kagutsu Genji fell. The Blue king Habari Jin having failed to prevent Damocles down tried to stop the destructive impact wave by spreading his Sanctum area over the city. Unfortunately the crumbling of the Blue sword itself resulted in the collapse of the Sanctum and Double Down (double Damocles fall). The damage to the archipelago was immense and included a huge crack in the land. The amount of casualties and deaths surpassed million mark in a sheer day. The Gold king who had approved of the 'Shield' operation died of heart attack. Airship of Adolf K. Weissmann, the 1st and Silver king was hit by the shock wave and got destroyed. Considering tat the 1st king is supposed to be immortal and his body wasn't found he's written off as 'missing'. Hundreds of sufferers, panicking masses of people and inability to keep at bay Strains and minor number of surviving clansmen made the Usagi ask for the help of Grey clan - pretty much the only one retaining its influence and power. Gold clansmen join Grey clan (even though only nominally). Unfortunately Ohtori Seigo is way too young to efficiently solve all the inherited dilemma that includes homelessness, starvation, public order, medical expences, economics, foreign affairs and other spontaneously arising troubles. To decrease numbers of bad decisions Gold clan opts to seek assistance of the Colourless king, Miwa Ichigen. The latter, who had long ago decided to lead a hermit life, accepts affected by the scenes of the disaster and becomes a public person. This temporary union results in years of collaboration which in turn leads to restoration of economy and normal day-to-day life of people. For those who know better though the World is orbiting the will of the two Kings (or, rather, the King and the Prophet) and no important decision is made without their approval. Six years later one of such decisions is to entrust with duties of Military Police recently chosen Red king Suoh Mikoto and his clan, so that they would deal with Strains and renegade-clansmen. The results’re more than sufficient, yet Reds’ (who were previously a gang of bosozoku) tendencies to overlook minor law offence on the contrary to excessively stern punishments of religious Ohtori lead to understanding of legitimacy becoming rather vague.

Unknown to anyone this young man (actually the first child that started Isana’s orphanage) has become the Green king during the Double Down. It seems that the fact of the fifth King being chosen was overlooked in the chaos that followed the Split or no one was able to confirm it with evidence.  Nagare himself leads ordinary life covering for the wound he had received on that day and major unhappiness with the System. His mentor’s seeming inaction makes him perplexed and leads to quarrels ‘in the family’. Underside of the world the Greys created irritates the Green king, but he’s too attached to the Silver king to leave the hiding and make himself known. Yet he searches for the value and aim of living. One day a simple game-simulation called ‘the New world’ changes his universe: the absolute freedom is not of this realm, it lies there, in the place where everyone can be a creator regardless of social status, gender or age. The world where ideal and untainted mind is to exist for eternity if it casts off the cage of mortal body. If he manages to reflect it with a coding… His path of King is to show the way to such a world.

By chance Miwa Ichigen meets Yatogami Kuroh – a new recruit of the Cathedral (Grey clan) and potential future clansman. After this meeting the future where he leaves the hierarchy of Grey king becomes more and more credible in terms of possibility.

The pendulum moves again and the inevitable change follows suit.
