Hole Punch's design in Origami King is extremely simple, but it also works so, so well. Most of what it does and how it acts is so nicely intertwined, all stemming from the basic idea of a hole puncher.
Tumblr media
We start with the hole punching. Look at how he moves while doing it. It's as if he's biting the floor... In that case, then he was also biting the faceless Toads... And he makes holes with two cylinders... They're like fangs! He's a vampire!
Tumblr media
So if he's a vampire, what about he Toads whose faces he bit off? While the most popular interpretations of vampires has their victims turn into new vampires, it's not uncommon for them to turn into undead minions and do the vampire's bidding for eternity. And that's exactly what the faceless Toads are for: Hole Punch wanted an eternal disco dance party.
Tumblr media
Speaking of the undead, look at the place where he decided to squat. It's an ancient king's tomb, and vampires really like sleeping in coffins deep inside their huge abandoned haunted castles.
Tumblr media
And just look at this. He stole the sun and plunged the area into an eternal night. Look me in the eyes and tell me that doesn't sound like something an evil vampire would do.
And of course, endless night means endless partying, which ties into the disco theme. And as we know, disco is dead... Except he's dancing it right now, so it's UNdead, like a vampire! He never wants the night to end, he never wants disco to end. It all ties together so perfectly into what seems like a meaningless design at first glance.
Oh and also they managed to make his animations full of expression and charm, just look at him groove

I've been meaning to touch my pmtok gijinkas for a while now. Wanted to start with Entertainer!
Look at them, she is beautiful~!
I few notes on Entertainer...
I imagine Entertainer, or Bibiana/Bib, being genderfluid, you might see me using more gender neutral or female pronouns for them, mostly to avoid confusion while talking about her, but that doesn't rule out the male pronouns! I also took a bit (a lot) of inspiration from drag queens/kings while redesigning Entertainer, it's the main reason her wig has changed, I love the hairstyles the drag community has.
Only her wig, coat, gloves, boots and accessories are made from her rubber bands.

hc that Olivia was the one who originally came up with the idea for the legion of stationary. Of course Olly had to go and steal if from her.

Short analysis on the differences between the artstyles of Paper Mario: The Origami King and the recently-announced Thousand-Year Door remake.
The most obvious place this shows up is in the paper itself. TTYD's is much glossier. It looks shiny and even reflective at times, reminiscent of the harder paper found in school textbooks and pop-up books. TOK's paper looks rougher in comparison. The kind used in the floor and walls looks like the thin colored cardboard you'd buy for a school project. It's also clearly much thinner than the stronger cardboard used for TTYD's world.
This extends to the character models. In TTYD, they are made of overlaid thick pieces, moving around like a puppet or some mechanism. TOK instead has snappy movements, moving like a low-budget stop motion movie. They look like they were simply printed and cut out straight from the white paper, while TTYD characters clearly had a longer manufacturing process.
Speaking of manufacturing, the ways the worlds are built and designed are also quite different. In TTYD, the paper has textures printed directly on top of it. You can clearly see wooden boards, grass, etc. TOK instead uses plain paper most of the time, so materials are suggested by the way it's applied, by literally having thinner strips to indicate boards or tiles, for example. Sometimes, paper is literally ripped for certain effects. Other materials like tinfoil appear every now and then for representing things like shiny metal, while everything in TTYD seems to be the same material with different textures. This is also noticeable in the characters, as TTYD characters are shaded in their textures.
Also, in Origami King, non-bottomless holes are represented as literally being below the paper, showing the little wires holding everything together. While I don't think it's been shown on the trailer, the original TTYD also had sections behind the paper, and it was depicted as instead a pattern texture.
In a nutshell, while both are clearly paper environments, the TTYD remake is going for a professionally-printed book style, while Origami King is instead a home-made diorama.
