The Beautiful Zoo X Jibola
Meet Jibola. A 20-year-old rapper from Lagos, Nigeria. His first ever body of work titled “Truss Me” recently just dropped. We caught up with him to talk about his musical background, inspirations and his experience working on the project.
A personal listen of the Truss Me tape gives a sonic insight into a mix of well-prepared, genre-diverse, lyrically mature and yet youthful and fresh songs. Jibola proves himself to be a very versatile and adept entertainer, we can’t wait to see more from him. The album features Loti and Ocho as guest appearances, production credits go to Tobi Baron and Ocho again, a star-studded collaborators list in a few years to come certainly. The 5-track rap tape is available on Apple Music and you should do get it. This is the interview, read about it.
1. Give an introduction about yourself.
My name is Jibola Oduwole. I’m an independent recording artist.
2. What is your musical background?
I think that’s based on watching a lot of Michael Jackson videos, also listening to Lagbaja as a kid really made me want to be on stage, but it wasn’t up until secondary school I started battle rapping, and I knew I had flow too so.
3. Who are your influences, in music and in life?
In music, of course the goat, Wizkid, Michael Jackson, Lagbaja, I listened to a lot of Drake also over the years. I feel like any artist I really fuck with now has at least a little impact on me, even with the beats I use and all that. Daniel Caesar, PND, Amine, Boj, Prettyboydo, the list is long.
In life, my family, friends and relating with people influence me. I’ve noticed that if you’re influenced by someone or something, it means you’ve learnt or you’re learning from them, so when I talk to people, I always look out for what I can pick up. I also watch a lot of stuff from all fields just to feed myself.
4. What are your best 5 songs of the year? Of course, excluding your own music.
It’s tough but I’ll say;
Pan Fried – Kano Ft. Kojo Funds
Cyanide – Daniel Caesar (best song ever)
John Redcorn – SiR
Hell and Back – Bakar
Mafo – Naira Marley
5. The Truss Me EP is your first musical project. What was the experience like working on it?
It was great. I found out that I really enjoy making music and there’s a lot to it, so hopefully I can grow in my craft. In general, it was a crazy good feeling.
6. How did you figure out producers and featured artists you collaborated with on the project?
I actually didn’t know I was gonna put out a body of work, I just wanted to do more than I was doing at that moment. So I called Ocho over and he played some beats for me and my guy Raj who also makes beats. He sent me a short pack and once I heard the Ali Bomaye beat, I fucked with it. I had like 3 songs and just felt like putting out an EP. I later hit up Baron and he sent me the Holy beat. Actually, I didn’t know he made the On My Flex beat so shout out Baron, got that beat from Kenny.
I wasn’t really keen on features, I only wanted to work with dope artists so shout out Loti also for that cold verse on Ali Bomaye.
7. Ocho clearly worked extensively with you on this project as he got featured and also produced a track. How did that come about and what was the experience like?
Ocho actually produced 2 tracks on the tape; June and Gualla which he’s featured on. I believe in energy; we had worked on a song before but I didn’t release it. So I was already familiar with his work ethic. He’s a beats when it comes to this music thing so yeah we exchange ideas and hopefully the world will see and hear.
8. The international and worldwide recognition of Nigerian music in the past few years have helped to popularise more artists especially young and upcoming, also with the help of social media and the internet. How do you feel being a new age artist?
I think it’s a good time for upcoming artists. Social media in the end is people and if you can get your work out to the people and they fuck with it, nobody can come in your way. That has really helped our African artists reach the far ends of the world and represent. Also with collaborating with other international artists, it’s incredible. One of my best songs this year is the Bas and Kiddominant joint.
9. What’s the future like for Jibola?
I just have to keep working on myself and the music and dropping to show progress till no one can deny it.
10. If you weren’t into music, what else?
Probably a DJ or an actor or something artsy.
11. Describe your ideal Lagos cruise?
I don’t know if I have an ideal one but I just want to say that unplanned rocks are always the best, like when you just go out to see someone and then they suggest a motive and it’s lit, yeah those kinds of nights are calm.
12. Drake – Scorpion // Playboi Carti – Die Lit. Choose one.
I’ll say Scorpion just cause it has Non Stop on it.

E+ M’s Short and Nerdy Reviews: Homegoing by Yaa Gyasi
Plot 101: Homegoing traces the family lines of two sisters through seven generations, weaving the stories of the women and their descendants into a beautiful work of literature.
M: 3.5/5 Stars – This novel has a natural poetry that I found enchanting from the very first chapter. It was not what I originally expected: from reading reviews, I thought the book would follow the lives of two half-sisters, Effia and Esi. In actuality, each chapter followed the life of the various descendents of the two sisters; so every chapter was told from a new characters point of view.
My favorite stories/chapters were Quey, Ness, and Kojo. These decedents varied from a young man discovering his sexuality while struggling with being a half white, from a silent but strong slave woman in the south of the United States, and a man who loses his family unexpectedly. Each story described lives that could not be further apart, but yet, lives that are still inexorably tied together by common blood. Each story has great adversary, and (consistent with the rest of the book) these characters do not always mange to overcome these obstacles without great damage. While it can be seen as collection of sad stories, men and women abused for no reason other than the color of their skin, but the palpable feeling of courage that emanated from each character unites them all in the struggle to make a better life for their children then theirs had been.
E: 4 out of 5 gold black stones, thanks to Richard – Where to begin, where to begin? Before that intro gives you ideas to the contrary I’ll assure you I very much liked this book. It is a work of art. The fact that it is Gyasi’s first novel makes it even more astounding. The style in which the book is presented is something I’ve not really read before: each chapter follows a different person from each generation – one member of Effia’s family, one member of Esi’s. Every story is somehow connected to another, and the little threads that tie each story together though are part of what makes the novel. It doesn’t rely on past chapters, though, to be understood: any story in this book could be taken out and presented alone and still carry its own weight.
What makes me groan about this book is that it can often be very hard to read – not in the sense that Tolstoy is hard, but more along the lines of something like The Jungle – there is a real, palpable feeling of struggle and suffering that the characters in many of these stories work to overcome (with varying success) that can be very tough to stomach. Personally I find this to be even more a credit to Gyasi – it isn’t often a book makes me uncomfortable but she’s got it down. This isn’t to say that it’s all sadness and obstacles – though that is a common theme – there are some very bright moments (I found Marjorie’s story had some of the most pleasant and relatable family moments). I was most invested in the bookend stories: Effia and Esi, Marjorie and Marcus (though I did also enjoy Quey’s story). It’s the stark differences between the sister’s stories in the beginning and the final joining together of the two lines in Marjorie and Marcus’ feels very poetic, and a fitting way to start and end this epic journey. The fire and water finally meeting was on the nose, but I enjoyed it. I have a lot of other random thoughts about the book to discuss, but for the sake of shortness here is where I’ll drop it.
TL/DR: It’s a great book and you should definitely read it – put it at the top of your TBR but finish whatever you’re currently reading first.

Miley Cyrus – Malibu 11. Lorde – Green Light
10. Jax Jones – “You Don’t Know Me”: English DJ-producer Jax Jones kept his light shining bright with a consistent run of fresh original material and remixes galore all year long, but it was this addictive, RAYE-assisted dance throb that kicked it off and deservedly ascended him into popularity. “One To Watch” would be an understatement. The man knows what a proper dance song should song like. “Ooh, na na yeah!”
youtube
9. ALMA – “Chasing Highs“: With the undeniably euphoric “Chasing Highs,” this big-voiced, green-haired unicorn proved to be one of the most exciting new starlet’s on the rise right now. It deserved to be much bigger than it was but something tells me she’s only just begun having her fun. Look out 2018!
youtube
8. Tove Stryke – “Say My Name“: This Swedish songstress’ glorious return is a thoroughly free of flaws Swede-pop production, relishing in a cool groove of straight-forward vocals, infectious waves of sleek electronica, and a chorus that manages to never get old. In my perfect fantasy world, it was one of the biggest pop songs of the year.
youtube
7. Billie Eilish – “Bellyache“: Young starlet on the rise Billie Eilish had me sold from the moment I heard her nonchalantly channeling a murderer on this irresistible, dancehall-tinged guitar gem. At just 16-years-old, Billie knows exactly the artist she wants to be. Soak it up or end up in the gutter.
youtube
6. BANKS – “Underdog“: Only a true overlooked pop gem would actually end up predicting it’s very own fate. “Underdog” is a refreshing departure from BANKS‘ mostly brooding, alt-pop sound we’ve all come to know and love. It features a ton of bright synths and an irresistible bass line — and yet, despite it’s more pop-leaning sheen, this is undeniably the stuff of BANKS.
youtube
5. Rihanna – “Love on the Brain“: Queen RiRi has given us gorgeous balladry aplenty, but “Love on the Brain” takes the cake as one of her most timeless offerings yet. PERIOD.
youtube
4. Jessie Ware – “Selfish Love“: English Goddess Jessie Ware took a constant theme in relationships and turned it into a slow-moving four-minute chameleon coated in dreamy atmospherics, warm flares of ambient sound and winding, sort of island-tinged pulses. It’s an incredibly intricate number, worthy of playing on repeat for hours on end, and that is precisely what I did the moment it dropped. Absolutely one the year’s most underappreciated offerings. Forever my queen.
youtube
3. Julia Michaels – “Issues“: After years of penning hits for others, Julia Michaels finally stepped out as an artist in her own right and delivered a relatable smash of her very own. She can write your faves hits and have her own, too.
youtube
2. SZA – “The Weekend“: The definition of lyric gold is found here. Real and utterly empowering the whole way through.
youtube
1. Dua Lipa – “New Rules“: A breakup anthem with its own set of rules to follow? “One, don’t pick up the phone/ You know he’s only calling ’cause he’s drunk and alone/ Two, don’t let him in/ You have to kick him out again/ Three, don’t be his friend/ You know you’re gonna wake up in his bed in the morning..“
How did we not think of this before? Yeah, Dua Lipa is the pop star we deserved in 2017.

DAVE FT. MOSTACK - NO WORDS [6.00] Writing no words would have been cheating, so here's 500 of them instead.
Maxwell Cavaseno: Dave always manages to work with industry peers of the UK Rap Scene and sedate their obvious bangers into coffeeshop music, almost working as a sort of soft-hands ambassador, the 'translator' for those who find the hoodies and screwfaces of his self-appointed peers getting lost in translation. Thankfully though, "No Words" is effective because he has the sense to leech off the much MUCH more potent personality of MoStack to carry the record. Is this essentially a glossy attempt at selling records like "Liar Liar" and "Let It Ring" to the kids who find artists like Kojo Funds or Abra Cadabra unseemly? Easily. But does it recognize the actual strengths that made those records good? Somehow it does. [6]
Ryo Miyauchi: Dave and MoStack's somewhat petty Smartphone-related preoccupations add a slightly interesting quirk to an otherwise cliched claim of their power. Hiding text notifications and frustration from fabricated displays of lifestyle via Instagram: these goons are bothered by very millennial problems. [5]
Anjy Ou: This is my new "fly and unbothered" song. Both Dave and MoStack are good singers and rappers, and their performances actually work with the instrumental and feel like integral elements of the song, as opposed to just sitting on top of it as it is with many other songs. The crisp production is killer -- I especially like the end of the track where it gradually distorts and breaks up into discrete parts. This self-released track has already cracked the UK Top 30, and the Top 10 of the UK indie and R&B charts, so I think it's safe to say Dave is poised for greatness. [8]
Iain Mew: The half-hearted Afro Bashment moves musically leave a lot of the burden on their words to bring the personality. MoStack comes through better than Dave, but even that's an even split -- forcing "messages" and "massages" to rhyme not quite there; "says 'fuck you', then fucks me" much better. [5]
Julian Axelrod: Dave's hook finds the exact midpoint between steely and suave, delivering a long-lost Backstreet Boys ballad over glassy, dead-eyed UK trap. He seems a little sleepy on the verses until MoStack mambos around the beat, reminding Dave he can have fun and reference The Incredibles and whatnot. Their energy is infectious, egging each other on as they trade off verses. And by the time they come back to that hook, it's even better than you remember. This Mo and Dave? That's bangers. [7]
Edward Okulicz: This is definitely a well-produced rap ballad banger hybrid with a strong hook that has a slightly mournful, pensive feel that doesn't seem to gel with the words but is extremely effective. Weirdly, I feel like Dave's been reduced to the role of a hook singer on his own track, because his verse flies by without leaving much impact beyond lifting a rhyme from a Shaggy chorus. Or maybe it's because his presence is felt much better on his singing part? MoStack's verses aren't brilliant either but in throwing out more punches he lands more. [7]
Ashley John: The foray into singing instead of rapping here isn't unwelcome, and knowing that it's not all Dave can do. As a stand alone, "No Words" is sluggish, but as a light reprieve after "How I Met My Ex," it makes more sense. [4]

This Last-Resort Test Saved 2 Women From Cancer—And It Could Save You, Too
But regardless of rounds of surgical procedure and radiation and chemotherapy, the most cancers stored coming again. Eventually, her prognosis shifted “from very hopeful to very dim,” Christine says. (Here are 8 issues each lady must find out about ovarian most cancers.)
“I had two young children and I was being told, basically, to get my affairs in order,” she says. “I was not given much hope.” In truth, Christine was advised she had round a month of “good-quality life” left to dwell.
It was round this time, early 2014, that her physician at Cancer Treatment Centers of America proposed genomic testing. “I had never heard of this form of testing before,” she says. “It was completely new to me.” Considering the bleakness of her prognosis, she was excited to listen to she had a hopeful new possibility.
Considering the place I used to be, to have the ability to dwell a traditional life and stay up for watching my youngsters develop up is superb.
Her docs despatched her tumor cells to the labs of Foundation Medicine. Their checks recognized mutations throughout the DNA of Christine’s tumor cells that indicated she may reply nicely to a focused drug remedy known as everolimus (commerce identify Afinitor), which is generally used to deal with renal (or kidney) most cancers. She began on everolimus in 2014.
(Reverse persistent irritation and begin therapeutic your physique from the within out with The Whole Body Cure.)
“It was a drug intervention—I take a pill every day with a glass of water,” she says. After 3 years on the drug, her most cancers has retreated: “I’ve had fully clear scans and my most cancers is in remission.”
“I by no means would have thought this was doable,” she provides of the seemingly miraculous final result. “Considering where I was, to be able to live a normal life and look forward to watching my kids grow up is amazing.”
What Is Genomic Testing? Every cell in your physique comprises 20,000 to 30,000 genes. By inspecting these genes for abnormalities or “mutations,” genetic testing can decide if the make-up of your DNA places you at higher threat for sure forms of most cancers. (This is what it is prefer to be examined for the breast most cancers gene.)
The check supplied by Foundation Medicine and different genomic testing firms is barely completely different in that it additionally examines the genetic make-up of tumor cells.
By “sequencing” the genes inside an individual’s tumor cells, the check can in some instances determine mutations which will reply to new and more-targeted remedy choices, says Kojo Elenitoba-Johnson, MD, a professor of pathology and laboratory drugs and director of the Center for Personalized Diagnostics on the University of Pennsylvania Perelman School of Medicine.
Genomic testing may get rid of remedy choices—an final result Elenitoba-Johnson says can be helpful. “This can prevent wasteful and counterproductive treatment courses, and it saves critical time that may be wasted in applying the wrong therapy,” he explains.
Watch this shifting video of strangers speaking about their metastatic breast most cancers:
It’s vital to notice that, whereas drug firms are creating new therapies on a regular basis, “drugs do not exist for every genetic mutation,” he provides. “There are many more mutations than there are therapies at this point.” Whether or not insurance coverage pays for the check or therapies additionally relies on the specifics of your scenario and protection.
PREVENTION PREMIUM: The One Thing That Got Me Through Cancer And A Divorce
Another Success Story Like Christine Bray, Colleen Farrell was younger—simply 33—when she was first identified with most cancers.
“In the summer of 2014, I’d started feeling run down,” she remembers. “I started napping every day, which was totally unlike me, and I had discomfort in my lower back.”
Doctors initially pegged her discomfort as a pulled muscle. But by that fall, that they had recognized a tumor. Colleen had superior colorectal most cancers. (Every lady ought to know these 5 indicators of colorectal most cancers.)
“I was Stage 4, so it was bad,” she remembers. “It wasn’t quite, ‘Go home and plan your funeral,’ but it was, ‘Be aware that you might have to soon.’ ”
Despite radiation and chemo, the most cancers quickly unfold to her liver and each her lungs. “I was blown away—just devastated,” she says. “Things were very grim.”
The pictures got here again displaying that not solely had the tumors not grown, however they’d began to recede.
Her docs advised her about genomic testing, and that it may open doorways to new remedy choices. “They told me some people were having success, but there were a lot of unknowns,” she remembers. “I asked what my odds were without it, and they told me ‘a couple of months,’ so I obviously wanted to try it.”
The outcomes her docs bought again from Foundation Medicine indicated her most cancers may reply to immunotherapy (here is the way it works). “I started it in March of 2016,” she says. “Eight weeks later, I had my first scan, and the images came back showing that not only had the tumors not grown, but they’d started to recede.”
She says her physician was “floored.” Back when her rectal tumor had first been found, it had measured 12 centimeters. After only one course of the brand new remedy, it had shrunk to 7 cm. “My doctor couldn’t believe how well it was working,” she says.
In truth, the brand new medicine virtually labored too nicely. “I ended up having three massive hemorrhages and almost died because my tumor shrank so quickly that all the blood vessels and organs that were smushed up suddenly started pumping blood again,” she says. “So that tells you how quickly it worked.”
Colleen says she’s not fully out of the woods. “But I never thought I’d be where I am today,” she provides. “I think all the time how lucky I was to have benefited from this—that I could try it—because not everybody can.”
Who’s A Candidate For Genomic Testing? As lately as a couple of years in the past, the kind of gene sequencing carried out throughout this check would have value thousands and thousands of and brought years, not days, to finish, Elenitoba-Johnson says.
Because the genomic testing platform is so new—and most of the related remedy choices are nonetheless in scientific trials—genomic testing could solely be applicable when standard approaches like chemotherapy have failed, he says. (Here are 5 misconceptions you in all probability nonetheless have about chemo.) It actually relies on the kind of most cancers an individual has.
“For some forms of leukemia, the knowledge of the disease response is pretty mature, and so the first-line management is receiving this test and one of these new targeted therapies,” he explains. “In other cases, drugs [targeting the mutations] have only recently become available, and knowledge of their effectiveness and side effects is not as well-understood.”
He mentions lung most cancers, colorectal most cancers, and melanoma as different types of most cancers for which genomic testing could also be applicable. But once more, it relies on the person affected person and the specifics of their most cancers.
Needless to say, the science of most cancers diagnostics and remedy has entered a brand new and thrilling part. Genomic testing, coupled with newer, more-targeted therapies, is already saving lives.
The future is right here, and it’s vibrant. But there’s much more work to be completed.

4 Ways Use Functional Animation in UI Design
Just a decade ago user interfaces that used animations were avoided, being most often associated with popups and flashing ads, but this has changed. Today details of interaction design and animation make a fundamental difference on modern websites and in modern apps. This mindset shift is clearly expressed in Zurb’s statement:
We’re no longer just designing static screens. We’re designing for how the user gets from those screens to actually view content.
If we are to design better digital products, then we need to embrace the interactive nature of the app and websites from the very beginning.
Why Animation Works
Motion, by its nature, has the highest level of prominence in a user interface. Neither text copy nor static images can compete with motion. Our eyes are hardwired to pay attention to moving objects—it’s almost a reflex. We can take advantage of this with this functional animation.
What is Functional Animation?
Functional animation is a subtle animation embedded in the UI as a part of the functionality of that design. It has a very clear and logical purposes:
Reduce cognitive load
Prevent change blindness
Establish better recall in spatial relationships
In a human-centered design approach, where the user is the prime focus, a user interface needs to be intuitive, responsive, and human. Functional animation helps you achieve these goals.
How Functional Animation Improves UX
Our experience and impression of an app or site are shaped by a combination of factors, with interaction playing a fundamental role. Adding motion to our design can be meaningful and functional, when we find the right circumstances. Well thought-out and tested functional animation has the potential to fulfil multiple functions including:
1. Visual Feedback
Good interaction design provides feedback. Feedback acknowledges that the system has received a user’s action and demonstrates the result of the interaction whether it was successful or not. Animation in this group needs to be very subtle and should be designed responsively.
Button Feedback
In real life, buttons respond to our interaction, and this is how we expect things to work. In order to be predictable for the user digital interface should act in the same way.
Source: Jaron Pulver
Visualize the Result of an Action
By following the principle show, don’t tell, you can use animated feedback to highlight that something went wrong. For example, visual shake animation on incorrect passcode entry. It’s like the shaking of the head as if to say “no, try again”. The user notices the animation and instantly understands the current status.
You can also reinforce the actions a user is performing. In the example below, when the user clicks “Submit”, a spinner briefly appears before the app shows the success state. The checkmark animation makes the user feel like the process is finished successfully.
2. Softening State Changes
Other good places to add animation in design are at moments of change. State changes in the user interface, especially on the web, often involve hard cuts which can make them difficult to follow. Nothing feels more unnatural than a sudden change. Abrupt changes in an interface are hard for users to process. These moments of change should be softened by adding some animation to the UI.
Establishing Connections
Animated transitions should act as intermediaries between the different states of the user interface, helping users to understand what is going on when the screen state changes. The user simply follows the motion and understand how the two UI states are related.
It also works well for associating thumbnail and detail views:
The card animates from its original position into a position in the modal, making it clear that it’s the same item, just with more detail.
Call Attention to Changes
Animation can help the eye see where a new object comes from upon its reveal or where a hidden object goes, and can be found again. We can use it to call attention to changes that hide or reveal information, such as opening side drawers of content. In the example below, the main navigation slides out of the way when you click on hamburger icon. That movement lets you know the main menu hasn’t disappeared.
3. Visibility of System Status
As one of the original of Jakob Nielsen’s 10 heuristics for usability, visibility of system status remains among the most important principles in user interface design. For users, it’s very important to know and understand their current context in the system at any given time.
Progress Indicators
Data uploading and downloading processes are great opportunities for a functional animation. Animated loading bars set an expectation for how fast the action will be processed. Animation can be helpful in the case of failures. Even a not pleasant notification, such as a data downloading fail, should be delivered in a nice way.
Pull to Refresh
A user’s wait time begins the moment they initiate an action, and the worst case is when they don’t have any indication the system has received it. The pull to refresh action should have an immediate reaction. It’s essential to give some visual feedback immediately after receiving the request from the user to indicate that the process has initiated. Animation will help you with that.
4. Explanatory Animation
Sometimes users need a little extra help to understand the user flow or how to interact with certain interface elements. This is especially true for user interfaces that contain new or unfamiliar features or interactions for the user.
Onboarding
User onboarding demands a flawless UX, and animations in an onboarding flow has a tremendous impact on how first-time users will engage with an app. Animation gives you limitless freedom to convey anything, no matter how complex or how dry the subject matter, in an entertaining way.
Visual Hints
Animation can offer up some useful visual cues. Explanatory animation is most often seen when a page is opened for the first time and the animation shows how certain elements of the page are supposed to be used. This type of animation can be found in games which often deal very well with progressive disclosure, revealing game mechanics as you move further into a game. Such hints are only triggered when the user reaches the appropriate point in their experience.
Conclusion
Animation is powerful tool when used in a sophisticated ways.
We need to embrace the motion from the very beginning and think of it as natural part of our design, because design is more than just about visual presentation. As Steve Jobs said about design: It’s not just what it looks like and feels like. Design is how it works.
