My Roman Empire is how the life series writes itself. Here are some coincidences that I think about frequently:

1. Every person who has ever won a life series (Real Life included) was paired with another winner in Double Life (Grian & Scar, Scott & Pearl, Martyn & Cleo)

2. Several members had patterns in their deaths in Secret Life (All of Grian’s deaths happened while a large portion of the remaining server members were present, all of Scott’s deaths were arranged & he let whoever killed him kill him, all of Etho’s deaths were from Scar killing him, all of Jimmy’s deaths were from mobs of increasing strength (drowned, dragon & warden), all of Mumbo’s deaths were because of poor walking (walked off a ledge, walked into lava, walked into his own fence posts) & all of Martyn’s deaths happened in different dimensions)

3. Jimmy being out first 4 times in a row

4. Grian winning 3rd Life & then being dead last in the VR recreation of 3rd Life

5. Mumbo always having his final death moments after Jimmy’s final death

Joel literally & metaphorically being the reason Lizzie was the first one out instead of Jimmy in Secret Life (Lizzie only died because she was trying to kill Scott to help out with Joel’s assassin task, by the time she tried to kill him & died in the process, Joel had already failed his task & just hadn’t told her yet, so if he had told her that he had failed, she wouldn’t have taken Scott to the end & fallen into the void & Jimmy probably would’ve first out again. Also when they were hosting an early funeral for Jimmy, Joel opened the grave & told Jimmy to “Rise”, I think this was Joel unknowingly breaking the curse.)

12. The fact that Gem’s final death is always her coming 3rd & dying in a 2v1 situation.

13. Joel’s first death in Last Life was fall damage, his first death in Secret Life was also fall damage. The reason Joel ended up on red life in Last Life was because of the Boogeyman curse (both times), in Secret Life, he because red because of being killed by a Boogeyman. In Last Life Joel’s final death was at the hands of Scott, causing him to place 5th, in Secret Life, Joel’s final death was being killed by Scott, causing him to place 5th. I’m leaving out one of Joel’s Last Life deaths, specifically when he died to Mumbo in self defence, but that’s mostly cuz there are more deaths in Last Life than Secret Life

March 5th is the fourth anniversary of wayneradiotv's first Half Life VR But The AI is Self Aware stream, and for the occasion, I finally brought to life an idea that's been rattling in my head for a good while. Close-ups and discussion below.

The primary idea was to show Gordon and Benrey as mirrors of each other, drawing a comparison between the player's VR headset and the helmet shadow that Benrey is depicted with in fan works. Both Benrey and Gordon/the Player are engaging with the other as a game that neither will fully explain, and both have more power over their situation than they will admit. Compared to the other AI companions, Benrey is more overt in performing actions that should not be possible for him, culminating in his transformation and replacement of the final boss in Act 4. Similarly, while Gordon's actions make him seem powerless over the course of the story, he is ultimately the most powerful member of the Science Team-- their world is a game on his computer.

In this piece, the images of Gordon are made from cut images of real people and objects, while his background is made of flat, printed colors. To contrast, Benrey is made only of solid colors, while his environment is cut from more complex images.

all five girls walked out the van smiling and waving and the cameras before getting into a single file line, jimin stood in her spot beside yn before looking at the girl who tried her best to switch spots with minjeong who looked at her confused.

the older girl rolled her eyes and grabbed yn’s hand away from minjeong and pulled yn closer to her side causing the girl to look off the side awkwardly while the rest of the girls laugh at yn being silently ordered around.

the girls continued to wave and smile at the cameras before they were instructed to go inside, yn already getting to zoom to aeri’s side but was stopped by jimin who pulled back yn and put her hand in the girls back pocket and walked into the building.

yn adjusted the long sleeve shirt under her baggy band tee shirt as she stood in front of the mirror practicing the lyrics to “all the things she said.” 

while jimin adjusted the camera so it was facing them before walking over to where yn is and standing behind the girl who stopped practicing and immediately turned to look at the girl behind her.

“what?” “nothing.”, jimin then grabbed yn’s waist to tune the girl back around causing yn to yelp, “what now?”

 “Im ticklish there you know that.” yn said in turning back around to face jimin pointing a finger accusingly in the older girls face.

yn sat beside jimin who picked up a cared from the deck, both girls were asked to do a video with buzzfeed where they get asked and answered questions about each other, they specifically asked these two because fans have been deprived of real interaction between them for months.

“what’s the cutest thing about yn?” jimin read from the card before looking up in thought, while yn looked at the camera with a jokingly raised eyebrow.

jimin finally gasped like she knew what her answer was and leaned over and pinched on her thigh causing yn to let out a small scream that sounded more like a yelp.

“what the heck.” yn said rubbing her thigh before continuously hitting jimin’s arm softly.

“that sound she just made.” jimin says as she laughs and brushes off yn’s hit, “that’s the cutest thing about her.”

yn immediately stoped her hitting and moved her chair away from the older girl, “you sadist.”

Only one date is ever mentioned in-game, that being 2021. Considering that the Virtual Singer Fan Festa seems to be a stand-in for Magical Mirai 2021, we can assume that the Scramble Fan FESTA! event takes place in September 2021 (the real-life MM2021 was delayed to November due to covid-19, but the pandemic doesn't exist in-universe and MM Tokyo usually takes place at the beginning of September). There are Leo/need Daily Life social media posts that show them attending Magical Mirai, and do state the year of the event, but these can be considered promotional material for the event itself rather than canon material, especially since the characters address in-game that only one year has passed since the start of the story (despite the fact they have celebrated new year's day 4 times now. Timeloop things).

Based on this date, we can actually place exactly when every main character was born. The cutoff date for Japanese schools is April 1st, making Ena the oldest main character, being a 3rd year with a birthday of April 30th, followed by Tsukasa on May 17th, so on so forth all the way down to Kohane, a 2nd year with a birthday of March 2nd.

Considering when Scramble Fan FESTA is set, Ena, who was a 2nd year at the time, would be 17 years old. That would place her date of birth as April 30th, 2004. Additionally, while Kohane, a first year at the time, should be 15 during the event, the game considers her to be 16 due to using a set age for every grade bracket. Regardless, the event setting places her date of birth as March 2nd, 2006.

Based on this, we can conclude that:

Ena, Tsukasa, Rui, and Shizuku were born in 2004

Mafuyu, Kanade, Airi, Minori, Saki, Toya, Nene, An, Ichika, Mizuki, Emu, Haruka, Honami, and Akito were born in 2005

Shiho and Kohane were born in 2006

This also means that Ena, Tsukasa and Rui are all older than the MEIKO software (released November 5th 2004), and everyone except Kohane is older than the KAITO software (released February 17th 2006). Every main character is older than Miku, the Kagamines, and Luka based on this information.

Using the information around set ages*, we can also work out rough estimates for when the side characters were born. For example, Arata, who was 19 during the first 3 years of the game, is 3 years older than the members of VBS who were all considered to be 16. Since the members of VBS were born in the April 2005 - April 2006 school year range, Arata was likely born in the 2002-2003 school year range.

* based on how characters like Youta and Miu, who are said to be the same age as Leo/need, were both confirmed to be 16 years old before the 3rd anniversary age-up. Also Haruka's age is confirmed as 16 at a point in time when she shouldn't be 16. Timeloop things.

Based on this, the oldest living side character, Kounosuke, who was 55 pre-3rd anniversary and 39 years older than Emu, was probably born between April 1966 and April 1st 1967. On the younger side of things, Hanano, who was 14 pre-3rd anni, was likely born between April of 2007 and 2008. I've put the rest of the estimated side character DOBs under the cut.

Rakunosuke died when he was 98 years old. In the WxS main story, Emu says that he died a year ago. Assuming Emu was 15 at the time, they have an age gap of around 83 years. The year of birth listed here was based on that assumption.

We know that Kanade's mother died aged 30, but we do not know when she died. She is still alive in flashbacks set roughly 10 years prior to the events of game.

We do not have confirmed ages for Nagi, Reki, Sakaki, MMJ's landlady or Mafuyu's father yet.

Rui suggests that Reki is the same age as him in A Story Where You Are The Star. However since it's more vague than Asahi, I left it out. However, Asahi was since confirmed as 18 when he was compared to Reki as being similar age, it is likely that Reki is also around 18 years old.

Nagi's age is left blank in the fanbook due to it not being revealed that she was dead at the time of publication. She is younger than Taiga, but we don't know by how much, but nonetheless she was likely born in the early 1980s.

you were the 5th member of earth arcade. a young actress that has been garnering attention recently.

laughter echoed throughout the stairway. suddenly, nervousness prevents you to climb the last few steps of the stairs . you peek in the corner to see a familiar face facing the doorway, lee youngji.

deciding there’s really no choice but to move forward you enter the doorway, bowing and greeting. everybody paused for a second, then chaos ensued.

“woah!” lee eunji, a comedian you often see on TV, exclaims before reciting your lines from your latest drama.

mimi, from oh my girl, joins in not soon after. even going as far playing the role of your scene partner.

“thank you for having me. nice to meet you.” you greet politely.

“gosh. you’re so formal.” younji poked fun good-naturedly at your antics despite bowing in response. “don’t worry. im sure she’s going to be infected by your rowdiness soon enough.” eunji quickly replied earning a loud laugh from mimi.

“wait. wait. do you know anybody in this room?” this time it was producer na who took a jab at your surprising awkwardness.

“well, i know you.” you look straightly at producer na. he chuckled at your honesty.

“i know everybody from TV and mostly from social media. this is my first time meeting everybody.”

before you can react, you hear youngji let out a load “oh!”. you turn towards the door to see ahn yujin, one of the literally and figuratively hottest idols in the industry.

you’ve only seen her on your screen. now, your mouth gape at the sight of the real thing. ahn yujin in the flesh.

withouth thinking, you bowed repeatedly like an idiot. “oh my gosh, what an honor!”

“miss y/n l/n. oh my god.” yujin ran over to you. and the sole reason you stopped your continuous bowing was to admire her. ‘wow, she’s so close.’

your eyes popped out their sockets as she takes your hand and shakes it gently. “im a big fan. i watch your dramas religiously. i can name all your projects, i’ve watched each of them at least twice.” she professes, not once pausing.

“thank you. what an honor. im a big fan of yours as well. wow, you’re hands are so soft. sorry, im being weird. its just- wow.” you breathed out.

laughter echoed through the room as everybody watched your exchange.

“its like one fan girl meeting another.” mimi exclaims. “their eyes turned heart-shaped for a moment like those cartoon characters” eunji added.

your eyes find yujin’s only to find hers already looking you.

yujin was a big fan of yours even way before meeting you in jiraksil. what she didn’t know was that you were bigger fan of hers.

you rummage through your luggage until you found what you were looking for. if the people around you didn’t know any better they would've you were a thief thirsty for something valuable.

“y/n, you look like a racoon in a garbage can.” mimi jested.

“aha! found it!” you exclaimed, holding up a package in the air like its a trophy.

eunji steps closer to inspect. “its an…album.” she traced confusedly.

“yep.” you walked towards yujin who was watching the entire scene unfold through the comforts of her bed.

you held the album with both your hands and extended your arms towards her, looking similar to a school girl confessing to her crush by giving chocolates.

“will you please sign it.” you shut your eyes tightly, like a school girl afraid of getting rejected.

in the show, you play the good-for-nothing chaos maker role together with younji.

“oh come on. do i really have to pair up with you?” yujin complains but her wide smile betrays her.

“how could you say that?” you exclaim then proceeds to chase yujin around, puckering your lips and making kissing sounds while opening your arms. you both run around, you chasing her and yujin trying to escape your grasp. she squeals and giggles. and when you did catch her you wasted no time in tickling her.

“somebody get these two love birds away from me. i can’t watch any longer.” younji makes a gagging noise.

nine times out of ten you mess up causing you to receive an earful from a perfectionist yujin.

“you should've known that! it was so easy!” yujin berates you. but despite her words, her smile beams at you brightly.

“how would i know that? that song is practically ancient.” your hands fly up in the air defensively.

“even i know that.” yujin retorts.

“that’s because you’re like a grandma in teenagers body. a normal person your age wouldn’t know that.” you argued.

“what?!” yujin looked at you dramatically like you’ve done an unspeakable crime, like you just kicked a dog.

“there they go again. they’re like an old married couple.” eunji deadpans at the camera.

yujin likes annoying and bullying you as a form of showing her adoration.

“eunseo-ah! i got something to tell you!” yujin stand from the couch abruptly to recite your lines from your drama.

usually, you take pride in your work but yujin had impersonated you for the nth time today that you can’t help but cover your ears.

“somebody please! make it stop!” you plead. the other members chuckle at your misery.

“eunseo-ah! i’ve like you since we were kids! please go out with me.” yujin continued, this time much more dramatic than the last.

she's reenacting a scene from one of your most famous dramas. a scene where your love interest, which yujin is embodying right now, is confessing love to your character, eunseo.

“eunseo-ah! eunseo-ah” the idol shakes your arm giddily as you look straight. she takes entertainment at your exasperation. and continues to mimic your characters from various dramas for the rest of the night.

yet she never fails to show her adoration towards you in other ways.

“eunji, what do you think?” yujin asks the older girl who was browsing at the rack of clothes.

“it looks amazing on you! you should buy it!” eunji encourages the younger girl.

“oh! it isn’t for me. its for y/n” yujin clarifies.

“im sure she’d be happy to receive that. in fact, im sure she’d be over the moon with anything you give her.” eunji recalls how much you dote on yujin. “you could get her a random rock and she’d probably treasure it like it’s from space.”

yujin’s cheeks flared red at the thought. eunji laughs at her embarrassed state. “you’re both such dorks.”

in the end, yujin couldn’t decide which one you’d like best so she bought three different clothes for you.

your relationship peaked in the wake up mission where you secretly help yujin because you felt bad for her.

you found out yujin’s mission when you entered the shower after her. the shower reeked of garlic. you had to laugh at the absurdity of the smell. in addition, there were bits and pieces of garlic skin on the floor. putting two and two together didn’t take long after that.

the lights were out. youngji and mimi were asleep but you were unable to. so you ventured out until you heard noises. it was faint but your mind is still alert from all the caffeine you took that day.

heading towards the noise, you found yourself before yujin and eunji’s room. you carefully open the door to meet yujin’s wide eyes.

yujin looked like a lunatic holding the pestle midair with her crazy eyes. you chuckle lightly, tiptoeing towards her. “you’re too competitive for your own good.”

“don’t tell anybody.” yujin quickly pleads.

“there’s no one to tell anything to.” your words put her at ease. at much ease someone mincing garlic in the middle of the night could feel.

“why are you still awake anyway?” she asks you silently. “i don’t know. i guess my body was itching to pester you.” even through the dark, yujin’s smile still shined bright. and you hoped the darkness was enough to hide the redness of your cheeks.

fans adore your dynamic with yujin. the push and pull relationship you both have managed to gather a lot of attention on social media.

“everybody, slow down. i can’t read your comments, they’re too fast.” you squint at the screen. you were live on instagram, hoping to interact with your fans.

after the live chat had slowed down, one comment managed to catch your eye.

“are you wearing yujin’s shirt?” you looked down at the said piece of clothing. sure, you had no memory of buying this particular shirt but that goes a lot for your other shirts as well. some were sponsored, gifts or bought while drunk. you assumed it was one of those three.

until, a loud ping came from your phone and a notification popped at the top of your screen.

yujinnie: yes, that’s mine. i put it on your suitcase so it’ll remind you of me ;).

you smile like an idiot while reading the text. then, you realize something. yujin is watching this live because how else would she send that in perfect timing.

your face flush at the thought of her being amongst the thousands watching you right now. and you flush a shade darker, because she must’ve witnessed you grin at her text.

the comment remained unanswered as you decided to keep this detail to yourself.

even after filming season one, yujin continues to support you by posting scenes from your drama. her instagram quickly transformed into a fanpage because of how often she would fan girl about you.
