Which leads me to ask, how much experience do you think he has? Do you think he’s had past partners or flings? Or is he a virgin who’s learned techniques to please his partner motivated by his want to please them? And for funsies, what do you think is his length? 👀

Hi!!! First of all, I wanted to thank you for sending me this ask, because now I get an excuse to talk about my thoughts surrounding his love life!!! This is a topic I am very passionate about.

I'm very excited to share these headcanons because they’re something I’ve heavily discussed with @phosphor-escent / @cornerfortherats (Maggie) at random times during the past few months. She is a lovely person to hold a deep, analytical conversation about Bruno with. (And a lovely person all-around.)

Discussion is under the cut!!

Bruno Bucciarati has never been in a relationship, nor has he slept around. (He doesn’t strike me as the type to have one night stands—loyalty is one of his defining character traits.)

As for why he lacks experience, I believe that Bruno would be very hesitant to let someone into his dangerous life.

Whether you like it or not, being associated with Bruno Bucciarati means being tied to Passione, a reality he's well aware of. Having connections to the organization can be dangerous—Bruno's enemies could use his loved ones against him. Being someone who prioritizes the safety of those he cares for over his own, the fear of loved ones becoming harmed due to his affiliations is enough to prevent him from forming deep relationships.

After the events of Golden Wind, I imagine Bruno would have been promoted to either Underboss or Consigliere within Passione. Passione is an immensely powerful organization, especially under Giorno's leadership. (If you consider Purple Haze Feedback to be canon, you'll know that Giorno's Passione has power beyond anything Diavolo could have ever imagined, surpassing even that of any president.)

With such a high-ranking position, Bruno would undoubtedly have a significant target on his back—not that he wasn't already in a highly sought-after position as Capo.

Being an existing member of Passione may make it easier to form a relationship with Bruno, but it certainly doesn't make it easy. If Bruno holds a higher rank, (which is almost certain if Giorno is boss, and still quite likely even if Bruno is a Capo,) he'd know that the person he's involved with would become an even more significant target than they already are.

Naturally, that raises the question: what if this person holds the same rank as Bruno or even higher? Given Bruno's serious approach to his career, he would likely maintain professionalism, trying to avoid letting personal feelings interfere.

(I would also like to note that if the person he cared about wasn't in Passione and expressed a desire to join, Bruno would do everything in his power to keep them out of the organization, likely outright forbidding it.)

At this point, you may be thinking, "Why does Coochellati think getting into a relationship with Bruno would be so difficult? Other mafiosos get into relationships--just look at Tiziano and Squalo!" While yes, it is true that typical mafiosos aren't afraid to form close relationships with others, we know Bruno isn't your typical mafioso. To begin with, "typical mafiosos" don't become career criminals at the age of twelve. (This leads nicely into my next point.)

So, what's the underlying reason behind my belief that Bruno would have a hard time getting into a relationship?

Childhood Trauma.

At the ripe age of seven, Bruno Bucciarati experienced his parents' divorce. Divorce can be traumatizing--according to the University of Illinois Chicago, "Children of divorced parents are at an increased risk of [having] interpersonal relationship difficulties."

While not every child of divorce struggles in forming and maintaining relationships, evidence from Golden Wind suggests that this could be a factor for Bruno. His actions and behaviors indicate that his upbringing has left a lasting impact on the way he forms and maintains relationships.

The moment he was made to choose which parent he wanted to live with was likely traumatic, especially with the high stakes he was presented with. Despite knowing that living with his mother would provide him the opportunity to attend a good school, he knew his father needed his presence. He chose to risk the strong possibility of a bright future for his father's sake, and at just seven years old, Bruno had already learned to prioritize others' needs over his own. This only intensified over time--by the age of twelve, Bruno was willing to murder to protect his father, quick to throw away any hopes of having a good future.

Throughout Golden Wind, we repeatedly see Bruno sacrificing himself for the needs of others. For someone with a pattern of this behavior and is acutely aware of the danger his associations present, it’s more likely he would jeopardize his happiness to ensure his potential partner isn’t affected by his actions. Bruno would most likely push them away or cut contact entirely, depending on how closely connected to them he is.

OKAY, WITH ALL THAT DEEP STUFF OUT OF THE WAY, LET’S GET TO THE FUN PARTS!! ;)

How good is Bruno in bed?

Despite not having much experience, he’d be pretty damn good, I’d think. Why?

Being good in bed requires understanding what your partner needs, which can be achieved through communication and reading body language. Being able to read someone well is a highly valued skill in the bedroom, and Bruno is well known for his intuition.

Remember his lie-detecting ability?

Bruno can discern a liar by the taste of their sweat, but he doesn't need that ability to detect deception. He knew Giorno was lying long before tasting his sweat—why else would he have placed Leaky Eye Luka’s eyeball in Giorno’s hand? So, how did he know Giorno was lying? Although Bruno mentioned that Giorno wasn’t perspiring, (which he might have lied about,) he must have figured out Giorno was lying through other means. While the exact method is unclear, it’s evident that Bruno can read people like a book. Therefore, it wouldn’t be hard for him to understand your needs.

Additionally, to be good in bed, keen confidence is essential--this is another trait Bruno is famously known for. The Grateful Dead arc is a brilliant example of how well Bruno can act under pressure. In his fight against Prosciutto, Bruno quickly and confidently made the decision to throw himself and Prosciutto off the train to negate The Grateful Dead's aging effects, ensuring the safety of his squad and Trish. If Bruno can keep a cool head while jumping from a speeding train, it wouldn't be a stretch to believe that he would be confident in the bedroom--especially as he becomes more comfortable with you sexually.

During your first time together, he may feel pressured to ensure that you're enjoying yourself. Though Bruno typically maintains a good poker face under stress, his attempt to project his usual confidence may feel slightly off. Perhaps he isn’t speaking as often, or his hands feel more clammy than usual—small details like this reveal his nervousness. Regardless of whether you notice these signs, he’d focus so much attention on his partner that they wouldn’t perceive his anxiety. After all, this is about making his partner feel good.

(I like to imagine that Bruno would let out an unintentional whimper the first time he slides in.)

Another thing to note: as mentioned before, Bruno prioritizes the needs of those around him over his own. Golden Wind also shows us that he’s more comfortable when he's in control of a situation. These traits suggest he’d initially prefer taking on a dominant role in the bedroom, as it gives him control over ensuring his partner is feeling good.

Now for the best part.

I'm going to do you one better and give you a whole d!ck headcanon.

Before ending this, I wanted to quickly say that even though I (sometimes) state my headcanons as if they are fact I understand that this just is my interpretation of Bruno—everyone has differing opinions. It’s important to note that others’ headcanons are just as valid as mine. (I just happen to really like writing in an argumentative essay style, and this post is written in a style akin to it.)

The claim that transgender status is immutable and biologically based was raised in the recent case of Talbott v. Trump. Eight plaintiffs—six active-duty service members and two individuals seeking to enlist—are challenging President Trump’s January 27 executive order barring transgender individuals from military service. The plaintiffs’ filings refer to “gender identity” as a deeply ingrained and involuntary characteristic with a biological basis—language that can be used to claim constitutional protections. The plaintiffs allege that the ban amounts to unlawful discrimination under the equal protection clause of the Fifth Amendment.

During hearings in February 2025, U.S. District Judge Ana C. Reyes pressed Department of Justice attorneys on the administration’s justification for the order. She instructed both parties to brief the court on “questions of biology,” prompting the plaintiffs to submit a five-page brief arguing that transgender identity is both innate and immutable.

This claim carries implications far beyond military recruitment. Activists have used it to justify medical interventions for minors, inform education policies, and establish civil rights protections for “gender identity” comparable with those for race and sexual orientation. There’s just one problem: the plaintiffs’ brief—and the immutability argument more broadly—doesn’t withstand scientific scrutiny.

Though the plaintiffs’ filing never defines gender identity—commonly understood by its proponents as a person’s “internal sense of being male, female, both, or neither”—it nonetheless describes it as “innate,” “deep-seated,” and “impervious to change through external influences.” The brief also claims that a “scientific consensus” exists supporting the biological basis of transgender identity and asserting that transgender individuals constitute “a discernible class.”

The brief’s claim that transgender identity is both innate and immutable appears to rely on a misreading of the evidence. While “innate” typically refers to traits present at birth, “immutable” implies that they cannot be changed. Even early researchers who believed gender dysphoria might be innate did not consider it immutable—particularly in children. Decades of desistance research suggest that 85 percent to 90 percent of children with gender dysphoria who do not undergo medical transition eventually outgrow those feelings, with most going on to become gay or lesbian adults. The growing visibility of detransitioners—individuals who once identified as transgender but later reversed course—further challenges the idea that transgender identity is invariably fixed.

Even if biology plays a role, transgender identification does not arise from a single cause. The heterogeneity within trans-identified populations makes it unlikely that one universal explanation applies across the board. Research instead points to several developmental pathways: a homosexual pathway, historically seen primarily in boys and linked to childhood gender nonconformity and same-sex attraction; an autogynephilic pathway, primarily in adult men, involving sexual arousal at the thought of being female; and rapid-onset gender dysphoria, a pattern that has recently emerged mainly among adolescent girls and shaped by social and psychological factors. These distinct profiles challenge any effort to define transgender identity as a singular, biologically determined condition.

To a layperson, the plaintiffs’ brief may appear persuasive. It employs technical language, cites scientific studies, and references earlier court rulings that treated transgender status as immutable.

But none of this holds up under closer scrutiny. The rulings cited failed to examine the underlying evidence, instead reinforcing a kind of circular legal logic. The studies—focused on brain structure, twin concordance, genetics, and fetal hormone exposure—can give the illusion of a solid scientific foundation, but they are fraught with limitations. They often rely on small, non-representative samples, produce inconsistent results, fail to control for key confounding variables, and lack reliable replication. What remains is a patchwork of inconclusive findings, frequently overstated to support broad claims.

To assess the plaintiffs’ scientific claims properly, it helps to understand that, while sex itself is binary, many sex-related physical and psychological traits exist along a continuum. Some individuals naturally display traits more commonly associated with the opposite sex—often referred to as gender or sex nonconformity. Evidence suggests that prenatal hormone exposure can shape such traits in both boys and girls. Childhood gender nonconformity, a term used in clinical research, has also been strongly associated with same-sex attraction.

Social and cultural influences shape how these traits are understood and expressed. For some, these traits may cause distress, leading to a diagnosis like gender dysphoria. In today’s environment, where transgender identity is often conflated with gender nonconformity, individuals who don’t conform to traditional sex stereotypes may interpret their experiences as an internal “mismatch,” rather than as natural variations in behavior, personality, or sexual orientation.

Sex-based differences in brain structure are well-documented, and, as neuroimaging techniques advanced in the early 2000s, researchers began searching for neurological correlates of gender dysphoria. This sparked a wave of transgender brain studies, many of which received enthusiastic media coverage. Many have referenced these studies to support the idea of a “neurological sex”—that the brain possesses an internal sex separate from the body.

Building on this idea, the brief claims that “research shows transgender women and non-transgender women have similar brain structures,” citing five studies. But these findings are complicated by confounding variables. The use of cross-sex hormones—commonly used among those who medically transition—can alter brain anatomy. And sexual orientation can independently influence brain structure. When studies control for these factors, the results often show that the brains of trans-identified individuals more closely resemble those of their biological sex.

The brief also cites a review of numerous twin case studies to suggest a genetic basis for transgender identity. While identical twins in the review were more likely than fraternal twins to identify as transgender, this does not constitute strong evidence of genetic causation. The research relies on case reports of twins raised together, making it difficult to separate genetic influence from environmental and social factors. Identical twins often share closer emotional bonds, which can influence belief systems and reinforce shared identities.

In nearly every case where both twins identified as transgender, both were also homosexual. The one exception involved a pair of identical twins described in the literature as exhibiting “transvestic fetishism”—a condition now more commonly referred to as autogynephilia. This raises the possibility that the studies are not capturing a genetic basis for transgender identity, but rather a shared predisposition for same-sex attraction.

The study’s findings also diverge from what would be expected if transgender identity were strongly heritable: concordance rates between identical twins—that is, how often both twins in a pair identified as transgender—were modest, while fraternal twins showed no concordance at all. For comparison, twin studies on homosexuality show a more typical genetic pattern, with fraternal twins exhibiting about half the concordance rate of identical twins.

The brief references a study of genetic variants—differences in DNA sequences—related to sex-hormone pathways. These pathways influence how the body produces or responds to hormones like testosterone and estrogen, which may in turn affect behavior patterns traditionally associated with masculinity or femininity. Atypicality in these traits reflect gender nonconformity—not transgender identity itself. While these variants may be more common in trans-identified populations, they are neither unique to, nor predictive of, transgender identity. The authors of the study explicitly caution that “none of the studied variants could hence be assumed to be a primary cause of this condition.”

The brief also cites research on congenital adrenal hyperplasia (CAH), a disorder of sex development in which female fetuses are exposed to elevated levels of testosterone due to adrenal gland dysfunction. This excess androgen can lead to masculinized physical traits and more traditionally male-typical behaviors in childhood. While the brief interprets this as evidence that prenatal hormones shape “gender identity,” what the research actually shows is an association between prenatal androgens and masculinized behaviors or interests—that is, gender nonconformity, not identity rejection. Most girls with CAH continue to identify as female, despite these biological effects.

Taken together, the studies cited in the immutability brief do not establish that transgender identification is biologically determined. Instead, they more consistently reflect patterns of gender nonconformity and same-sex attraction. Ultimately, transgender identification is an individual choice made in response to gender-related distress—not the result of a hardwired biological condition.

Misinterpreting the findings of these studies as evidence of a fixed transgender identity risks narrowing society’s understanding of gender nonconformity. Rather than encouraging individuals to alter themselves to fit a prescribed identity, we should create space for a broader range of expression—recognizing that many gender-nonconforming children grow up to be gay or lesbian adults.

As courts and policymakers weigh the arguments in Talbott v. Trump and similar cases, they should treat claims of scientific certainty with skepticism. Decisions with profound personal and social consequences demand clear evidence, honest interpretation, and restraint in drawing conclusions that the research cannot support.

I love how "sex is a spectrum," yet somehow an MRI can test for and reveal a "brain sex" binary of a male brain in a female body, or vice versa. And yet also we should trust "self ID," because people can just feel the results of an MRI innately.

"Gender identity" is "innate" and "immutable," except that it's also a "social construct," "not a simple fixed binary construct," "fluid" and a "journey."

Mind-body dualism is a deranged Wonkian boatride.

Wednesday, the 21st of February

As expected, it is confirmed to be not a good thing for me to be completing the prompts early. It gives into my anxiety and need to be structured and in control. My challenge for the rest of the year is to be "looser," or to learn to simply go with the flow. The idea of that frightens me. So until then.. structure.

In March, I am meant to speak of green emotions also known as: envy. I would like to believe that I escape feelings of jealousy but unfortunately, I find that it takes over me in unconventional ways. Within interpersonal relationships, I am not one to engage in long lines of questioning. My best mate speaks of his head spinning and blood boiling during jealous fits, I am unfamiliar with those feelings. However, in being brutally honest, I am wildly possessive. I wish for what's "mine" to be "mine." When in love, I give my all and expect the same back. I find that I am attracted to those who are wild and free-spirited and although exciting, it is absolutely terrifying when they wish to live a life that doesn't require the need to be physically around me often. I believe my form of jealousy is a fear of missing out, a fear of rejection, and perhaps a fear of not being needed. I also tend to reflect behaviours a partner may be demonstrating towards me. If my phone is being looked through, I am likely to look through phones. If I am being restricted, I am likely to restrict others. I am unsure of why this happens. The mother of my son often labels me as petty, and says I am talented in pettiness. Those labels make me sad and ashamed. However, I find there is lack of choice once my emotions take over. To work on controlling my emotions if and when I am hurt by something or someone, perhaps more time to reflect would help or more direct communication. I probably fear appearing as weak since I am often labelled as sensitive. Sensitivity, in my opinion, is a strength.. but others see it as overwhelming and I try very hard not to overwhelm others. Fear of being a burden is an underlying struggle that I often choose not to face head-on.

My last relationship resulted in infidelity on their part. Infidelity triggers my abandonment issues, my childhood trauma, my anxiety, and much more. I have forgiven infidelity within the relationship in the past, and so badly wish I hadn't. I was overcome not so much by jealousy, but a deep-rooted pain and a desire to inflict that pain back onto her. That may also be a form of jealousy, maybe? If a one-off situation (although it may still be painful) I am likely to sulk or take a break. But the repeated instances.. the accumulation of pain and the frustration of being involved with someone who believes that they can do whatever the fuck they want with absolutely no regard for my feelings or loyalty, is what drives me to make petty, impulsive decisions. I do not think of how my retaliation affects others in the moment, but I always do after the fact. I often put myself down for allowing myself to feel regret, as I'm not sure that those who hurt me regret doing so. In writing this, I am becoming increasingly aware of the fact that I treat others how they treat me.. I believe in hopes of "showing" them their behaviour.. as if to make them realize that it's harmful. I thought maybe that was the smart and mature thing to do but I am quickly realizing that it isn't. It may be a waste of time and energy and moving forward, I hope to stop that and instead, immediately leave a negative situation. There is no need to prove a point: an "Aha!" moment.

When it comes to material things or physical or personality traits, I believe I never feel jealousy. I think of this as unhealthy, as I believe it's more human to compare yourself than it is to be totally content with what you have or what you look like. I do not necessarily think of myself as intelligent or handsome or anything. However, I was raised by a mother and eventually a step-mother, who would reassure me of those things often. I am lucky in never feeling insecure about my abilities and always believed that I could do what I put my mind to. With the exception of my son, I am concerned about things that cannot be held in your hands or seen in a mirror, such as love, kindness, respect, perseverance. I genuinely rarely think about the rest. I don't believe I have ever wanted something that someone else had or thought I my life would be better if I possessed something I didn't have already. I am extremely grateful for that.

I suppose that's all I have to say, really. Work in progress, to sum it up.

my fave character to write for changes all the time i used to do a TON of swerve and have a lot of swerve ideas and im not really 'burnt out' on him per se but ive explored his character so much in terms of romance/smut that i feel im rehashing the same ideas and i think a fresh perspective would help

im a sucker for rodimus i have a soft side for arrogant people irl and crush hard on anyone who is just way too confident but i love how he is soft and really cares about people too bc i can relate to that i have so much love for rodimus even if he is a shallow bastard and makes poor decisions for his own ego, i feel like theres a lot of room for improvement there esp if he had someone as his opposite (cough rival cough) to push on him and force him to think outside his own worldview im a big dork for rivals to lovers tho its like enemies to lovers but enemies generally start off VERY antagonistic and rivals are generally antagonistic yes but have room for an underlying respect and admiration and wiggle room to how they could interact as friends

someone i never get requests for but love immensely with my whole heart is bumblebee all bumblebees (i even have a soft spot for bayverse but i will NEVER touch those movies i dont want them within the bi county area stay away from me) i have loved bee since i was a kid bc the first transformers i watched was tfa and i loved characters like jack spicer and bee and other such overconfident jerks with a soft side as ive explored other series that love for bee has only grown i love him when hes a bold leader who wants to earn respect but treats even his enemies with kindness and i love him when he's a scout who gets into trouble bc hes just too gentle and weak i have so many thoughts about bumblebee i love him lots i could go on and on about the different bees (and their relationships with starscream ill die on this hill) hes always such a gentle good guy and deserves the whole world i dont care if transformers is overrun with bumblebee content i want MORE

i also love to write cheetor but strictly beast wars and cyberverse cheetor i feel only terror with beast machines cheetor im a big sucker for anything that has a likeness to cats and the fact that his alt mode is a cheetah i think is so cool im a cat lady through and through i love cat mugs and posters and slippers so ofc one of my fave robots has to be the cat one which also brings up ravage whom i adore in a different way than cheetor they are complete opposites in many regards but they are both loyal which is a quality i treasure in any character or person i think the most interesting thing about ravages story (particularly idw here) is that he is essentially a man with a body that makes others see him as a creature rather than a person i like that the writers took the time to think about all the altmodes the decepticons have and how their original functions made them sympathetic to megatrons cause

i also like writing for rumble and frenzy (all the cassetticons really) although i have a hard time bc two of my friends are big cassette fans and i want to portray them in a way that they would when it comes to transformers or any fandom imma be honest and say,,,,,,,,, ive hardly looked at the source material i havent read much and i havent watched much i saw big sexy robots and i was hooked and i love the story but,,,,,,,,,,, theres no way my attention span would allow me to read a full range of comics man i dont have that in me

other than that i dont want to say that im clinical in how i approach characters but im technical and i know them in a general sense and expand upon them in a way i feel a real person with specific personality traits would act i want them to feel more in depth than just a one or two dimensional character i want to write them in various situations bc deep down we all are just,,,,,, love creatures we all love and we all love to be loved

Min Yoongi - A Modern Hades

I’ve seen many ARMYs compare Yoongi to Hades before, and there’s definitely good reason for it from an astrological perspective! I wanted to create a special post featuring his natal Pluto to bring some insight into the inner world our mysterious dark king, Min Suga.

First of all, Yoongi’s natal chart is naturally very well balanced. He’s got planets spread out amongst many signs, elements and modalities. Upon first inspection of his chart, something caught my eye. He’s an Aries rising, which aligns each house under its natural ruling sign. His Pluto, the planet named for the Underworld king, resides in Scorpio in his 8th house. This is the most powerful placement the planet could have in a chart. This isn’t exactly uncommon to see in the charts of those born within the Pluto in Scorpio generation (in fact, Hoseok also has this placement in his natal chart). What caught my attention was the fact that Pluto is forming an aspect to every other planet in Yoongi’s chart, a feat which can definitely be contributed to the balanced nature of his chart, but is also quite rare to see. Without further ado, let’s look into some of his Pluto aspects.

Pluto in 8th House Scorpio: The depths of the Underworld

To understand Pluto, we must first be aware of what it stands for in a chart. Pluto is the Roman equivalent of the Greek God Hades. In astrology, it rules over endings, transformations and new beginnings, secrets and hidden realms, mines and caves, the financial world and investments, psychology and the subconscious mind, the occult, death, and anything society considers to be taboo. To put it simply, Pluto rules “all that is beneath the surface.” This is true in both the literal sense, beneath the Earth, but also beneath the mask, persona, or conscious mind.

Pluto rules over Scorpio and the 8th house, making this placement in Yoongi’s chart a very strong one for the planet. There are no conflicting energies here to thwart its power. This automatically tells us that Yoongi is willing to go deep into these hidden and misunderstood realms when need be. He’s not the type to shy away from intensity in his life. Introspection is a strong trait of his, and he has an innate need to know his demons, his dark side, and his traumas in a very intimate manner. He has a natural talent for “getting to the bottom of things.” He sees past the veil and has the capability to dredge these subconscious ghosts up to the physical world, which shows in his talent for the arts. He’s able to summon the collective subconscious into his work, writing music that reflects themes of common struggles and can support others through moments of darkness.

Pluto Trine Sun

This aspect gives Yoongi great power and magnetism on stage. People are naturally curious about his mysterious nature and are easily drawn into the depths of his personality (where he’ll allow them in).

This aspect is known for giving natives the capability to command large audiences, but without being egotistical about their power. Yoongi is well aware of the presence he has and this subtle underlying strength, but he’s not interested in using it to boast about his status (aside from the occasional rap verse, haha). He actually takes a very humble approach to leading the masses, preferring to put himself on the same level as everybody else and viewing those around him as individual people with their own unique stories and backgrounds.

This doesn’t mean he doesn’t have an ego, though. Pluto trine his Sun will simply cause a constant transformation of his ego. He’s never fully grounded in the image of himself he’d like to portray in the spotlight, and he’s never certain which aspects of his personality are best to show to the world.

He grows and transforms into the image he wants for himself over time through positive feedback and support from his fans and admirers. It’s this process of slowly exposing hidden parts of himself to the spotlight and shaping his self-image based off of the response that allows him a more humble approach to fame. Whereas others will find a public image that they’re comfortable with and which they know will give them power over the audience’s response, Yoongi constantly morphs his, allowing different facets of himself to expose themselves over time.

This keeps him in a constantly vulnerable position in terms of receiving feedback from his audience. You can even see his tendency to sort of “try on” different images or personas in his lyrics, particularly in his mixtape tracks. Part of Yoongi’s soul purpose is to grow through this ability to constantly transform himself.

Yoongi carries the “genius” nickname for good reason! Pluto aspecting his Sun in this way will give him a rather extreme approach to researching the things he cares about. His intelligence comes from his diligence, along with this inherent need to fully understand the subjects he’s interested in.

I’m not at all surprised to see him picking up new instruments and methods of composing on a regular basis. Music is one of his biggest passions and he’ll constantly feel a hunger to learn more about it. He’ll never reach complacency with his songwriting because he won’t ever feel satisfied so long as there’s still new information to learn and digest. It’s this intensity in how he goes about his studies which allows him to learn so much in such a short amount of time. And again, because he rarely boasts about it (at least not in a serious manner), much of his knowledge is likely overlooked by audiences. This goes for his career as well- he’s very likely to succeed at anything he’s interested in pursuing, simply because of the work ethic he puts into everything he loves.

With both his Sun and Pluto in water signs, he brings an inherent emotional quality to his music. He doesn’t know how to keep control over his feelings. He can hide them, yes, and he can suppress his responses and reactions to his environment, but he can’t put any kind of a limit on his feelings or keep them within his grasp. Yoongi feels everything DEEPLY. Even the smallest of pains can feel as if it has cut through his very soul, especially where his loved ones are involved.

He keeps up the “cold” image as a defense tactic to keep himself protected, but he’s anything but cold-hearted. When Yoongi does open up to others, there’s no denying the depths of the feelings he experiences. It’s why his music and his raps are some of the most intense to listen to, but sometimes also the most healing. His emotions spill over into his work whether he wants them to or not, and this likely has a very healing, transformational affect on him (as well as his audiences). If you don’t believe me, go and watch some of his live performances of First Love.

This aspect gives Yoongi a great sense of self-awareness and a strong love for helping others. As I mentioned before, he’s unafraid of intensity. He’s not the type of person to run away when you’re struggling because you’re too much to handle or the situation has become too “messy.”

Yoongi and Jimin both tend to thrive off of this sort of intensity in their relationships, and they enjoy the process of gaining others’ trust and being there to support those they love when their help is most needed. As much as it hurts Yoongi to see those around him suffering, he’d be MUCH more upset to know that they were suffering all alone. He has some issues around trust himself, so he understands just how big of a deal it is for others to open up to him and rely on him. Give him a little bit of your trust and vulnerability and Yoongi would go to the ends of the earth to try to make things better for you.

Yoongi is fearless in the pursuit of his goals. It’s easy for him to find his interests and to create a sense of destiny for himself within them. He has a unique ability to simply trust the process. Even when it seems like there’s no hope of success and nothing is going right, he has this innate ability to trust that he’s learning and growing and will eventually get to where he wants to be.

That’s not to say that he doesn’t stress about these things or feel anxiety when his life doesn’t go as planned, but simply that he has an intuitive sense that things will work out for him if he continues to work hard and grow from his losses. He knows that no matter the struggle, he can’t give up. His persistence is one of his strongest traits.

Yoongi is very, very perceptive. He doesn’t miss much of what’s going on around him. I’ve seen ARMYs talk about how Jimin seems to have a sixth sense for what the other members are feeling (and he does- we’ll get to his chart later) but Yoongi’s intuition and perceptiveness is often overlooked. He doesn’t always act on this knowledge immediately or obviously, preferring to care for his members and loved ones behind the scenes, but he’s absolutely very much aware of the moods and feelings of those around him.

It’d also be next to impossible to lie to him. He can see right through people and he values authenticity over keeping up a particular image. If you were trying to fool him in any way, he’d definitely know something’s up and he’s going to call you out on it.

Pluto Sextile Moon

Yoongi’s Pluto also forms a major aspect with his Moon in Virgo. Remember my previous statement about him being deeply emotional? Yeah.

Yoongi is highly, highly sensitive to his feelings. I honestly don’t know how he’s managed to hide this quality of his so well that the whole “cold-hearted Suga” label could even be thought up. Not only is he very perceptive to others’ moods, he’ll often feel them as if they’re his own. This is part of the reason why he’s so motivated to help and heal others (and with a positive aspect, he’s very good at doing so). He projects the image as if he’s very shy and awkward about comforting others, and I think the only reason for this is because the intensity of emotions is very overwhelming to him. In a close relationship with someone else (and when not in front of cameras) he’s very good at comforting and even healing those around him.

As overwhelming as these emotions can be, Yoongi loves the intensity and vulnerability involved in sharing them. Pluto thrives off of the deepest connections, and Yoongi might even find himself subconsciously creating drama or throwing himself into intense situations because these Pluto aspects will seek out depth and growth from uncomfortable or challenging situations. It’s a good placement to have for the line of work he’s in.

Pluto is the greatest detective. It loves a good mystery, and it has a way of getting to the very bottom of a situation and uncovering it. In aspect with Yoongi’s moon, he has this effect on others’ emotions and traumas.

He’d be drawn to those who are quiet and secretive like he is, and he’s very good at reading others. He has a talent for understanding even the subtlest of expressions. His energy and personality are naturally soothing, supportive and safe to those who are struggling. This could be another reason why he keeps up a colder, almost harsh image in the spotlight- simply to keep others from taking advantage of his sensitivity in this way.

His presence creates the sort of loving and encouraging environment in which others would feel comfortable sharing their secrets without judgment. He’d make you believe that he struggles to help others in this way, but this isn’t a harsh aspect. Yoongi truly has a natural ability to heal those around him. You wouldn’t leave a serious conversation with Yoongi the same as when you came to him.

He also has a way of understanding of what’s no longer serving him in his life, and this greatly aids his ability to transform himself. He’s perfectionistic even in the way he handles himself, his life, and daily schedules. If something isn’t strongly benefiting him anymore, he has no problem dropping this habit and restructuring his life to make room for more efficient and useful habits.

These intuitive understandings of others, their motivations and intentions, emotions and potentials, are all reasons why Yoongi has such a strong influence over an audience. It does cause him some struggles with making new friends, though. He’s naturally a bit intense from the get-go because of all of this sensitivity, and this is often intimidating to others. That said, a strong connection with Yoongi is a very loyal one.

I should also note that Yoongi’s 6th house Virgo moon explains his struggles with OCD, which we’ll discuss in more depth in his natal reading. You can get a glimpse at the workings of this aspect in his work ethic and tendency for transforming himself. He’s in constant pursuit of his own personal perfection- occasionally to his own detriment.

Pluto trine Mercury:

This aspect definitely aids Yoongi in his songwriting. It adds a seriousness and a depth to his writing that allows him to touch audiences on a deep and personal level. His lyrics can make others feel as if they know him and are close to him, even if you’ve never even heard his name before. He makes others feel seen and understood. His inherent understanding of human nature allows him to understand what others want and need to hear, and he definitely has the power and compassion to authentically deliver these messages.

Yoongi’s determination is aided by his strong concentration skills. He’s able to take in a lot of info quickly because he’s able to focus on a topic very intently for long amounts of time. If he’s writing, he’s very likely to lose track of time, working for hours before he’s even realized that 20 minutes has passed.

Remember that Pluto is a great detective. Yoongi’s mind would love a good mystery. In fact, he probably finds many people/movies/books/etc to be quite predictable. He’s very good at figuring things out before everybody else does, and usually this manifests as a great understanding of human nature. He loves a good mystery, a great challenge to wrap his head around. He also tends to like dark humor and probably a bit of sarcasm here and there.

Mercury also rules the hands and arms, so this aspect could very well have something to do with his precise piano (and more recently, guitar) skills. This Pluto aspect will also explain his supposedly cold and bony hands. The Underworld planet aspecting his Sun & Mercury (in the 12th house, might I add) would definitely give him a more pale, bony, and sometimes even ghostly look about him. It also generally just makes him appear very ethereal, as if he’s not of this world.

Pluto Bi-Quintile Venus:

The bi-quintile is a minor astrological aspect as compared to the last 3 major aspects, but it’s still very much worth discussing in Yoongi’s chart. This aspect is known for creating a desire to organize things, recognize patterns, and perfectionistic behaviors. Aspecting Venus, this definitely applies to Yoongi’s art and image.

It makes a lot of sense that he would become a composer and songwriter with this aspect. He likes order and patterns which can be found in music, and he has a natural artistic eye (or ear) for beauty and expression.

This aspect gives the ability to be aware of problems and tension, along with the skill and intellect to solve them. I think this would also benefit his songwriting simply in the sense that he knows how to build tension. He knows how to use chords and harmonies to create tension between notes, and he has a strong understanding of how these sounds will affect people.

His perfectionistic tendencies and intense focus allow him to foresee problems and mistakes within a song or performance. He likes to get everything right on the first try. When problems do arise, however, his intuition and intelligence work well together to problem-solve any issue. He can truly handle just about anything, it seems. It’s another reason why he feels so safe to be around, because he won’t panic in the face of challenges.

Yoongi wasn’t lying when he said he really doesn’t have a “type.” Pluto aspecting the planet of attraction and relationships shows that he doesn’t at all care about surface-level things. He’d be completely willing to be friends with or date someone from a different race, status, or background than himself. Image doesn’t matter to him. He likes someone who is very passionate about their interests, and somebody who is both strong but gentle and caring for those around them (much like himself).

If he were drawn to a particular style or aesthetic, it would be rather similar to his own. Anything black and somewhat edgy would probably appeal to him. That said, he really isn’t very focused on appearance.

It’s possible that this aspect would make him a little bit afraid of love (of any kind, not just the romantic sense). Yoongi is incredibly passionate, and he seeks out others who can match him on this level. He’s learned that love for him can be a little bit dangerous. He’s drawn to power, and he’ll sometimes get himself into rather controlling or even codependent relationships because of these intense, powerful connections. I don’t think he strongly fears being treated badly by others (he’d probably understand their intentions from the start and therefore would have the upper hand), but he’s probably at least cautious of forming close connections because he knows how emotionally intense it’s bound to be. He, by nature, can’t help but connect deeply with those he involves himself with, and this leaves him with a much higher likelihood of getting hurt.

Pluto Sesquiquadrate Mars:

Yoongi’s Mars is already in its fall in Cancer in his chart, which weakens the planet quite a bit. This is a complicated aspect for him, but I’m going to try to give you an overview of it.

Mars by nature rules aggression, motivation, anger, power, and impulsive action. It’s a very instinctual energy in our charts. In water sign Cancer, this fiery planet doesn’t know how to function with its highest power. It does show up as a trauma aspect in Yoongi’s chart, and in his 4th house, these pains probably stem from his childhood.

This aspect between aggressive Mars and intense Pluto can cause some very powerful energy. Yoongi’s instinct is to fight his way to the top. He’s naturally inclined toward power, self-assertion, domination, even serious rage at times. Pluto buries this nature, though, and he likely experienced a lot of trauma around these natural feelings being suppressed when he was younger.

Many children with these intensely powerful aspects are not taught how to redirect this energy in healthy and helpful ways, which leads to a stifling and suppressing of it altogether. He is very good at saving this side of himself for the stage. You can hear the power and aggression in his voice when he raps, and I think you can get a good sense for this energy from a lot of his Cypher and mixtape songs/performances.

He’s usually quite withdrawn and docile around others, but on stage, he truly goes for everything he wants and asserts himself in a powerful (and sometimes even shocking) way. It’s also one of the best ways he can express his anger and emotions, through his work ethic, dancing, and performing. He seems to do a very good job of channeling this aspect in a healthy and beneficial way.

During moments when this energy gets too much for him to handle, he’s much more likely to turn this destructive nature inwards toward himself than to take it out on others. He knows what it’s like to hurt, and he’s so sensitive to others’ emotions that it would kill him to know that he was the cause of their pain and suffering. If he feels too greedy, power-hungry, aggressive, angry, or impulsive, he could turn to overworking to try to stifle these feelings himself, or otherwise turn this aggression toward his own mind. He associates these underlying traits with shame, fear, and possibly even abandonment from those he loves. It’s important that he accepts this side of himself and continues to find healthy outlets for it, which I do believe he’s done a very good job of as he’s matured.

We’ll talk about his Mars a lot more in his natal reading, as it’s a very complicated area in his chart.

Pluto semisquare Jupiter:

Remember that Hades also rules over mines, caves, and wealth. All gold and gemstones are mined from the Earth, after all. Jupiter is an amplifying point in the chart, and it rules over luck, abundance, and expansion.

Having these two planets in aspect with each other definitely can indicate Yoongi’s wealth, but not in the way you’d think. This aspect in particular can cause extreme blocks within the psyche. Yoongi struggles with the concept of wealth (which we’ve heard him discuss many times within his lyrics) and whether or not it’s benefitting (Jupiter) or is detrimental to (Pluto) his life.

Yoongi comes from a poor background, during which he likely believed that money would solve a lot of his stresses and problems. But now that he’s gained everything he could ever want in the material world, he mentally fights with the repercussions of reaching this level of fame and abundance.

This aspect will cause this mental tension between the two planets, and when Yoongi is unable to resolve this tension, they’ll only continue to manifest events in his life that will further these tensions. This is why Yoongi has managed to become so very wealthy, because these planets might never come to a resolution. They’ll continue to grant him wealth and status so long as he’s fighting with the concept.

Many would consider this to be a very lucky aspect because of its ability to constantly grant wealth, but it’s important to remember that it’s a tense aspect. Yoongi will probably actively struggle with this push and pull for the rest of his life, certainly for the remainder of his time in fame and the spotlight.

Yoongi’s initial hard-working lifestyle and determination to succeed was also probably born from this aspect. Initially, when the tensions between these planets were blocking him from wealth (in his younger years before BTS), it forced him to form a very dogged determination to fight for what he’s earned. Now that he’s “defeated” that block from wealth and achieved these great earnings, he must struggle with this new perspective of supposedly “having it all.” The planetary tension doesn’t end, it only moves and transforms. See the pattern?

I should also mention that the power born out of this aspect has been known to create a sort of “God complex.” We’ve discussed that Yoongi is very humble about his achievements in his daily life, but I think this is an interesting theme to keep in mind when taking in his art and music. *cough* daechwita *cough*

Pluto square Saturn:

This is another tense aspect which is known to create an incredibly persistent determination to succeed. I don’t mean to get repetitive, but I do want you to know just how many times this theme comes up in Yoongi’s chart.

This persistence isn’t very flexible with this aspect, though. He has a very set idea of what must be done and what he must achieve, and he rather stubbornly sticks to those ideas. This can apply to his routines and work ethic as well. He doesn’t like any sort of change that could affect his career or image. He could stick to some very unhealthy patterns simply out of stubbornness, and it takes many painful experiences to get him to let go of this standard or idea that he holds himself to.

It’s very possible that he struggles with authority figures dictating his work or career path, which would stem from childhood issues around being controlled by his family (most likely his father). The position he’s in can make him feel very out of control of the results of his work, and his controlling attitude toward his career gives him a slight sense of security in regards to how the world responds to him.

A lot of the reason behind this resistance is due to the responsibility he carries. He doesn’t take the position he’s in very lightly at all. He knows the importance of his work and the impact he has, and he carries this weight very heavily upon his shoulders. He’s aware that even his personal life decisions will affect his entire team due to their position in the spotlight.

Yoongi’s stubbornness can be attributed to his fear of jeopardizing their success, and he prefers to stick to the routines that have brought him success in the past out of the fear that change will result in unforeseen challenges or failures.

This aspect is also the cause of his “cold” demeanor. He’s afraid to let others see within his psyche, worried that whatever they see within him will change their relationship or his public image. Learning to be a little bit more open and trusting in this area would be a beneficial risk for him to take.

Pluto sextile Uranus- (10th House):

*house noted because this is a generational aspect amongst outer planets

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: he doesn’t call himself “genius Min Suga” for no reason. Pluto in aspect with the planet of revolution can grant highly creative insights and ideas. These sorts of placements are common in the charts of inventors and revolutionaries.

Yoongi doesn’t take the industry standard as a guideline for his career path. He truly prefers to create his own path to success and self-expression. If something isn’t working for him it’s quickly cast aside, whether it’s something expected of him or not.

These two planets in tense aspect with each other will often create controversy around a leader who promotes radical new ideas to the world. However, in positive aspect (like in Yoongi’s chart), these planets hold the power to guide people more gently into new concepts. Yoongi has a strong understanding of how to approach a wide variety of topics in a way that others will understand and be more likely to accept- or even embrace.

Yoongi is a strong and powerful leader in our modern world, but he doesn’t take a standard approach to leadership. He wins people over through his actions, not his words. He prefers to lead by example and to show his intentions rather than making empty promises to his fans and audiences. His strongest moments of leadership often happen behind the scenes, carefully dictating BTS to even greater heights while the majority of his followers are none the wiser. Remember Hades’ helm of invisibility? Yoongi takes a similar approach to leading his “kingdom” from within the shadows, whenever possible.

Yoongi feels a deep desire for change around humanitarian topics, such as inequality of any kind. This makes him a brilliant leader for our time period while also shaping his music to promote new ideals. I don’t think I have to explain this one any further for these themes to make themselves obvious in his work.

Pluto sextile Neptune- (10th House):

*house noted because this is a generational aspect amongst outer planets

Neptune has a very boundless and limitless energy to it. The planet of transformation (Pluto) tied in with Neptune in his house of career is the reason for Yoongi’s worldwide success.

Neptune and Pluto together have the potential to break boundaries. Similarly, Yoongi’s band has broken through language barriers, stigmas, and cultural limits to deliver worldwide messages. These messages inspire healing and change within their fanbase, while bringing people from many different walks of life together in a force toward change. His power and his influence could truly be described as limitless.

Yoongi, our modern Hades: a summary

Much like the Underworld king, Yoongi has been through a lot, has seen a lot, and isn’t much fazed by themes of darkness. Hades guards and protects over the dead and our dreams, and similarly Yoongi has always been the keeper of dreams, both dead and alive. Much of his music revolves around themes of dreams, dark & light energies, and the pursuit of power and riches. Hades doesn’t take his job very lightly, and neither does Yoongi. It takes the same kind of effort in guarding the souls of the dead as it does to resurrect the dreams of our youth in today’s society. We live in a transformational period of time during which much of what we’ve known must be left to pass away, leaving space for new patterns of life to emerge. Yoongi is a guiding leader in pushing the younger generations toward these new ideals, while also giving space for our past hardships to be laid to rest in a way which gives respect for all we’ve been through. Both lead incredibly important jobs, and yet both are often misunderstood. Peer closely into Yoongi’s personality and work, and you’re certain to see the ghosts of the Underworld alive within our dark King.

(This post was inspired by a recent post by @kayura-sanada that I was going to reblog, but my own addition became so long and, frankly, off-topic to the original post’s content that I figured it was fairer to create my own post. But theOP I’m referring to can be found here and is a good read.)

Okay, so: this is a wonderful analysis of Tony Stark, @kayura-sanada, and I agree that it’s concerning seeing this written by a psychologist (although I think there has to be a little wiggle room in the fact that said psychologist is basing their diagnosis on their own interpretation, and - I would hope - it would probably change if Tony Stark were a real person who was their patient. I gotta hope that).

I agree with all of your overall points regarding Tony, but I wanted to reblog this specifically because this post is such a perfect example of a larger problem within fandom and fandom wank. The problem is that fictional characters can be interpreted any way you want, sure, but there’s a line between supporting your interpretation with evidence from the source, and supporting your interpretation with stuff you just kinda made up. There is a right and a wrong interpretation.

Here’s what I saw happen with this post: your response to the OP is lengthy because it dissects the OP bit-by-bit; it responds to the claims made in those bits with evidence from the films that supports a completely opposite interpretation of the character. And the response you got largely ignores all of that evidence and analysis in favor of a surface-deep response about open interpretations and how it’s “all just fiction anyway.”

And I see the same pattern repeat itself over and over in fandom:

“Character A is Trait B and that’s why they do Actions C, D, and E.”

“Actually, character A is more Trait F, and examples of Trait F are shown in Action G, H, and I.”

“Okay, but when they do Action H, they’re responding to Event J, but with Actions C and E, they clearly demonstrate Trait B, along with Trait K and L.”

“Well, but, saying they are/have Trait K is kind of a reach, and when they did Action H it was out of character, because in the same situation in previous films, they responded to Event J in a different way. For example, .....” (long post)

“I’m not reading all of that, it’s open to interpretation, and it’s just fiction anyway.”

Later, rinse, repeat.

And it’s like, look, yes, you can interpret the characters however you want. Fandom is supposed to be a fun, engaging space where fans are inspired to create new works and discuss all aspects of the source. Headcanons exists because of open character interpretation. Shipping exists because of open character interpretation. Rarepairs and alternate universes and ‘there was only one bed!’ and lots of tropes exist because of open character interpretation.

Without that open freedom to engage with the source/characters in whatever way makes you happy, fandom wouldn’t be what it is, and I would never want to discourage that.

That all said, it is possible that someone’s interpretation is wrong. That the way they imagine the character or the way they’re interpreting the character’s words and actions is a contrast to what’s really supposed to be going on in the scene or with the overall arc. The wrongness can come from any number of things - interpreation being colored by personal experience, preferences, projection, whatever.

In the case above, the psychiatrist is viewing Tony Stark through a lens of what they already decided the character is: a case of Narcissistic Personality Disorder. They took that lens and picked out (vague) examples of how the character portrays those traits.

This is fine. If that person wants to think Tony is a narcissist and that’s how they want to engage with the character and subsequent works (pretending that this was a meta post instead of a published article), then that’s their prerogative.

But upon closer analysis, the original interpretation kinda falls apart. The contrasting analysis takes a deeper look at the material and says, I don’t think what you’re saying is going on here is actually what’s going on here, and this is why.

But people don’t want to be told they’re wrong, especially in a fandom space, especially with something they hold dear to them (as interpretations can be intensely personal, and I know this). When the two interpretations clash, and one interpretation doesn’t really hold up to closer analysis, then suddenly, being critical of the source equates to disliking the source, and analysis is reduced to people just being negative and wanting to find things wrong with the source. Disagreeing with someone’s interpretation is taken as a personal attack. People get offended personally. The discussion devolves into ugly rhetoric, insults, or simply dismissiveness (”that’s nice but whatever,” “it’s just fiction,” etc).

And you might say, well, if you think someone’s interpretation is wrong, why are you trying to rain on their parade? Why are you trying to prove them wrong? Let people enjoy things! Let people fandom how they want! Let people write and create and be inspired in their own way!

To which I say, absolutely! Please, continue to enjoy the Thing and your interpretation of it. Continue to create through the lens of that interpretation. Create what makes you happy, fandom however you want to. I am a big proponent of “fandom and let fandom.” What other people like and dislike makes very little difference to me, and I’m certainly not under any illusion that everyone must see things the way that I see them or else they are Doing it Wrong. Nor do I take it personally if someone doesn’t agree with my take.

None of that is my point. My point is that it becomes an issue that splinters and fractures fandom spaces when criticism and discussion are discouraged, when long analysis posts are mocked, when threads are hijacked, when it gets to a point where disagreeing with someone’s take on a Thing cancels them - to you - as a person. Because you miss out. You miss out on discussion, and on engaging with creative fanworks, and widening your fandom circle.

Instead, the circle just narrows, and there’s an underlying sense of hostility that colors every interaction you have. And it makes it not fun for anyone.

People need to be more open to the idea that there is, in fact, a right and a wrong side to most arguments. They need to be willing to defend their argument in a way that holds up and, if they don’t want to defend their interpretation, that’s fine - more power to you - but they need to then stop making fun of and being generally shitty to those who disagree.

People need to stop pretending that analysis and critical thinking don’t matter. They need to stop pretending that “fiction” is this vague concept that has no bearing on the real world and shouldn’t be taken seriously. Fiction shapes our world, and art imitates life. Being unable to think critically about fiction indicates a larger issue of being unable to think critically about the things that do matter in the real world, like science and poltiics.

Just look at what this country has become. Each side believes it is the correct side, the “winning” side, but one of them is supported with verifiable facts and evidence and one isn’t, and when the one that isn’t is confronted with the fact that they are wrong, they either dismiss the argument entirely or go and find “alternative facts” from unreliable sources they can point to and say, see? A, B, C, D, and E may say I’m wrong, but F says I’m right, so fuck you.

I’m certainly not saying that fandom should be taken as seriously as politics, but I am saying that if people were more amenable to changing their minds or even just recognizing that criticism isn’t an attack and it’s not personal if someone dislikes a Thing that you feel passionate about - or vice versa - then maybe we’d have a better fandom space for all to enjoy.

And I do try not to be a hypocrite. I am open to changing my mind on positions I’ve taken in fandom - if the analysis and the evidence convince me that there’s another way to look at it. If someone is telling me I’m wrong, and they tell me why it’s wrong (yes, in detail), then I’m more than happy to take a second look. Maybe it will change my mind; maybe it will simply be something I’m cognizant of while I continue to enjoy the material in the way that’s most fun for me. Either way, I’m not trying to hold fandom as a whole to any kind of standard I wouldn’t also expect myself to meet.

That being said, this post is 90% me venting. Ironically, I don’t expect this to change anyone’s mind. I’m not saying there’s any one solution that will work for everybody or even that everyone sees a problem that needs solving. I’m just saying that I don’t enjoy fandom as much as I used to, and this particular pattern of "wank” (for lack of a better word) is the reason why.

Relevant passages in regards to this issue posted first since a lot of it gets very misconstrued with what blame lies where with the Sect Leaders before the events when it came to the massacre at Nightless City and the deaths of the Wen Remnants. This is not necessarily clean cut after the fallout with Jin Zixuan and Jin Zixun's deaths. This is also still with the underlying plot of Jin Guangshan aiming for the Yin Hu Fu. There is a lot of political intrigue that goes ignored with this by manipulation of the Jin Sect and Jiang Cheng being blinded by his own jealousy.

“… Four inspectors were harmed. Around fifty of the remaining Wen Sect members escaped. After Wei WuXian led them into Burial Mound, he summoned hundreds of fierce corpses to patrol the base of the mountain. Our people still can’t get any further.”

When he finished, silence filled the Golden Pavilion.

Jiang Cheng only spoke after a few moments, “What he did was indeed a bit too much. Sect Leader Jin, I apologize to you in place of him. If there’s any way at all to help the situation, please let me know. I’ll definitely compensate for things however I can.”

What Jin GuangShan wanted, however, wasn’t his apology or his compensation, “Sect Leader Jiang, at first, for your sake, the LanlingJin Sect didn’t intend on saying anything. However, some of these inspectors weren’t from the Jin Sect. There were a few from other sects as well. This makes it…”

Jiang Cheng’s brows were knitted. He rubbed the vein that throbbed at his temple and soundlessly took in a deep breath, “… I apologize to all of the Sect Leaders. Everyone, I’m afraid you don’t know that the Wen cultivator whom Wei WuXian wanted to save was called Wen Ning. We owe him and his sister Wen Qing gratitude for what happened during the Sunshot Campaign.”

Nie MingJue, “You owe them gratitude? Isn’t the QishanWen Sect the ones who caused the YunmengJiang Sect’s annihilation?”

Within these few years, Jiang Cheng insisted on working late into the night every day. That day, just as he decided to rest early, he had to rush to Koi Tower overnight because of the thundering news. He’d been suppressing some anger under his fatigue since the beginning. With his natural competitiveness, he was already quite agitated since he had to apologize to other people. When he heard Nie MingJue mention the incident of his sect again, hatred sprouted within him.

The hatred was directed at not only everyone who was seated in this room, but also Wei WuXian.

Passage 2:

Using the atmosphere, Jin GuangShan turned to Jiang Cheng, “He’s been plotting for a while to go to Burial Mound, hasn’t he? After all, with his skills, it wouldn’t be too hard to set up a sect of his own. And so, he used this as a chance to leave the Jiang Sect, intending to do whatever he pleases in the bright skies outside. You rebuilt the YunmengJiang Sect with so much work. He’s got a few controversial traits in him to begin with, and still he doesn’t restrain himself, stirring up so much trouble for you. He doesn’t care about you at all.”

Jiang Cheng pretended to stand his ground, “That probably isn’t that case. Wei WuXian has been like this ever since he was young. Even my father couldn’t do anything about him.”

Jin GuangShan, “Even FengMian-xiong couldn’t do anything about him, huh?” He chuckled a few times, “FengMian-xiong just favored him.”

Hearing the words ‘favors him’, the muscles beside the corners of Jiang Cheng’s mouth twitched.

Jin GuangShan continued, “Sect Leader Jiang, you’re not like your father. It’s just been a couple of years since the reestablishment of the YunmengJiang Sect, precisely when you should be displaying your power. And he doesn’t even know to avoid suspicions. What would the Jiang Sect’s new disciples think if they saw him? Don’t tell me you’d let them see him as their role model and look down on you?”

He spoke one sentence after another, striking the iron while it was still hot. Jiang Cheng spoke slowly, “Sect Leader Jin, that’s enough. I’ll go to The Burial Mounds and deal with this.”

Here the sect leaders were aware of the Wen Sect remnants as prisoners of war and saw it as a justifiable reason to keep the remaining Wens imprisoned regardless of age status etc. When Jiang Cheng is asked by Nie Mingjue for clarification on the matter of the debt owed by the Wen siblings it is deflected by Jin Guangshan and Jin Guangyao with clever wordplay to rile everyone up. This leaves those who either asked for more information, Lan Xichen who is shutdown by not having enough information by the majority and Nie Mingjue distracted by his hate of the Wens already, and Mianmian and Lan Wangji who argued that Wei Wuxian was protecting innocents and was not trying to cause a coup ignored as being irrelevant opinions. Wei Wuxian is eventually labelled a defector and danger due to Jiang Cheng exasperating what they had actually planned in the staged fight.

After this several months pass until Lan Wangji comes to tell Wei Wuxian of Jiang Yanli's marriage in a week's time. Several days later the Jiang siblings arrive with the same news and Jiang Yanli is the one to extend a peace branch to try keeping the three connected with the courtesy naming or Jin Ling. Almost a year's time later Wei Wuxian is in fact invited to the one-month celebration as another peace branch by Jin Zixuan who was the one to extend the offer. Jin Guangshan, Jin Zixun and Jin Guangyao planned the murder of Wei Wuxian in Qiongqi Pass against Jin Zixuan's knowledge. This leads to the mess of his murder and Wei Wuxian being hunted down as well as all of the remaining Wens on order of Jin Guangshan in retaliation after Wen Qing is killed as the remaining leader of the Wens and Wen Ning secretly suppressed. This leads to days later to the Pledge Conference at the city which holds Jin Zixuan's body and Jiang Yanli who is there to keep the death vigils (Shou Ling) as family. It's also why her and Madam Jin are wearing the white robes when Wei Wuxian sees them and by bad luck comes across the sect leaders pact when he tries to flee.

After the the wine had seeped into the dirt, Jin GuangShan stated, “No matter the sect, no matter the surname—this cup of wine is to the soldiers who have died.”

Nie MingJue, “May their souls live on.”

Lan XiChen, “Rest in peace.”

Jiang Cheng, however, still had on a darkened expression. He didn’t say anything even after he poured the wine.

Afterward, Jin GuangYao walked out from the LanlingJin Sect’s array and presented with both hands a square box made of black iron. Jin GuangShan took the box with one hand and raised it high in the air, shouting, “Here lies the ashes of the Wen Sect’s remnants!”

After he spoke, he sent forth his spiritual energy and shattered the box with his bare hand. The iron box broke into pieces, and white dust drifted alongside the cold wind.

A scattering of the ashes!

A series of cheers exploded through the crowd. Jin GuangShan raised his hands, signaling for the people to be quiet and listen to him talk. When the cheers slowly died down, he continued, raising his voice, “Tonight, the ones whose ashes had been scattered were the two leaders of the Wen Sect’s remnants. And tomorrow! It will be the rest of the Wen-dogs and—the YiLing Laozu, Wei Ying!”

Suddenly, a low laugh interrupted his grand speech. The laugh was too untimely, sounding both stark and jarring. In unison, the crowd turned to look at where the sound came from.

The Palace of Sun and Flames was a rather magnificent palace. A total of twelve ridges made up its roof, and at the end of each ridge were eight heavenly beasts. Yet, right now, the people realized that on one of those ridges, there were nine. The laugh from before came from over there!

The extra beast shifted slightly. The next moment, a boot and a corner of black clothes dangled down from the roof, swaying softly.

Everyone placed their hand onto their sword hilt. Jiang Cheng’s pupils shrunk. Blue veins lined the back of his hand.

Jin GuangShan was overcome with both shock and hatred, “Wei Ying! How dare you show yourself here!”

The person opened their mouth to speak. What came out was indeed Wei WuXian’s voice, but he spoke in a strange tone, “Why should I dare not show myself here? Do you people here even add up to three thousand? Don’t forget that back in the Sunshot Campaign, let alone three thousand, I’ve fought against five thousand on my own before. And by appearing here, haven’t I granted your wish? No need for you to come all the way to my home tomorrow to scatter my ashes.”

A few of the QingheNie Sect’s disciples died in the hands of Wen Ning as well. Nie MingJue spoke coldly, “What arrogance.”

Wei WuXian, “Haven’t I always been arrogant? Sect Leader Jin, how does it feel, having slapped yourself in the face? Who was the one that said he’d let the matter go if the Wen siblings went to Koi Tower and gave themselves up? And who was the one that just said he’d scatter my ashes and the ashes of the rest of the Wen Sect’s remnants tomorrow?”

Jin GuangShan, “Let’s consider things as they stand! At Qiongqi Path, you slaughtered over a hundred of the LanlingJin Sect’s disciples—this is one thing. You made Wen Ning kill at Koi Tower—this is another…”

Wei WuXian, “Then let me ask you, Sect Leader Jin, at Qiongqi Path, who was the one being ambushed? And who was the one to kill? Who was the main schemer? And who was the one being schemed against? In the end, just who was the one that came to provoke me first?”

Keep in mind none of the other sect leaders were privy to the scheme between Jin Guangshan, Jin Guangyao and Jin Zixun. And they believe they are certainly fighting off a crazed Wei Wuxian and what they think are his fodder Wens meant for corpses. After this Wei Wuxian desperately fights against Lan Wangji who is trying to calm him down before it's too late which is unsuccessful leading to Jiang Yanli also trying to calm him down enough to get him away and talk some sense to get him out of there to run and get to the Wens. After her death he mentally blacks out and Lan Wangji is left trying to take him away to safety close enough to Burial Mounds. Lan Wangji then fights off his elders as Lan Xichen gathered the Lans to find them. Immediately after this is in sequestered secrecy Lan Wangji is punished. Lan Xichen presumably stays with his own brother while Lan Qiren is the acting Sect Leader for the actual Siege that the other three are part of as support. That leaves Jin Guangshan with the ulterior motive of getting the Yin Hu Fu, Jiang Cheng who wants revenge for the death of Jiang Yanli, and Nie Mingjue left to think he is killing what he considers disgraceful Wens.

So, in short, each of them had different motivations for actually being there, and different accounts for those reasons. The Jins for more power, Jiangs for revenge, Nies for justice and the Lans in solidarity. And the fault of it isn't meted out equally as all had misunderstandings and manipulated by Jin Guangshan's pull to each of their morals as cultivation sects. In the end each of the four were there to kill the Wens and Wei Wuxian aside from Lan Wangji and arguably Jiang Yanli when she was caught up trying to get Wei Wuxian to run.

Star Wars: The High Republic #2 Review

Ultimately a 7.5 out of 10, this installment was slightly better because of how Cavan Scott decided to advance the plot. While there some are nice nuggets of good-story telling and character interactions, even worse than last time, it’s bogged down with cardinal errors that truly make me question Scott’s competency as a writer for this story.

The issue comes right off the back end of Keeve being promoted to a Master Jedi and chronicles her first mission in the position. She is still dealing with the growing pains of what it means to be a Jedi which is depicted with her ongoing internalized self-doubt as well as her difficulty expressing certain Jedi mantras, such as “May the Force be with you.” Arguably exacerbating this bottled up uncertainty are the Keeve-proclaimed legends of Jedi Masters Sskeer, and identical Kobati twins Terec and Ceret. These twins are Bond-twins and as so are able to share the same mind and experiences of each other.

As they exit “hyperspace” (more on that later), the four masters come across the leftover demise of a ship that has been attacked. The Jedi were tasked with responding to the scrambled distress call that the ship had sent out sometime ago but, it seems as if they arrived too late. Both Keeve and one of the twins, using the Force, are able to sense survivors within the ransacked ship. As so, they board and enter. Almost as soon as they are inside, they are met with poisonous Nihilian ovax gas and utilize a device called “rebreathers” to mitigate the effects. Fully aware that the Nihil have raided this ship, they continue their investigation and split up to cover more ground. Traversing in groups of two, Terec – who is accompanying Sskeer – can sense the Trandoshan experiencing extreme trauma which means that Ceret can feel it as well via their bond; specifically, Sskeer is having flashbacks to the exact moment he lost his arm in the Battle of Kur.

On Keeve’s side of things, she and Ceret come across the corpses of a Hutt and Gamorrean guards. Upon further examination, it seems the Hutt was killed via an amalgam of stab wounds, blaster bolts, and nagnol poisoning – the latter being a toxic natural gas, capable of disrupting starship sensors, poisoning beings based on dosage, and a key element in the Nihil smokescreen.

On Sskeer’s end, he comes across a barley crop and together the Jedi deduce that the Hutt was capitalizing on the grain shortage that has occurred thanks to the Great Disaster. As the twins work on trying to ascertain where exactly the crop came from, Ceret is attacked by a Nihil that has been left behind; this causes both twins to feel the pain but, the wounds are not fatal. Sskeer charges ahead and chases after the Nihil raider, who is already suffering from serious injuries previously sustained in the raid. While Sskeer is perturbed that he cannot sense the attacker he is able to fatally strike down the assailant; coming to gripes that he has just killed, Sskeer goes on a rampage and continually slashes the bifurcated carcass only be brought back to his senses when Keeve addresses him.

Afterward, the Masters relay their findings to Marshall Avar Kriss and with the analysis from Master Maru, come to the conclusion that the barley – specifically Vratixia Renanicus – is a key ingredient in bacta; moreover, the shipment likely came from the Sedri System – principally, Sedri Minor. With this in mind, Kriss assigns Sskeer and Ceret to got to Sedri while she and Jedi Master Rwoh convene with Keeve and Terec to collect the Hutt ship that is breaking trading sanctions. Keeve moves to go with Sskeer but, Sskeer stonewalls her to stay with Terec.

Arriving on the planet, Sskeer is met with unwecolmedness by a citizen, Kalo Sulman who makes it clear that the Jedi’s presence will interfere with the colony’s independence. As the two are discussing, Ceret sees a Rodian in the crops motioning him to come over – as Ceret goes deep into the brush he is attacked by Drengir.

Back on the ship, Kriss and Keeve are discussing the remains of the corpse that Sskeer has left; Kriss reprimands Keeve for not telling her sooner but, also admonishes herself for not looking deeper into the signs the Force were giving her – such as not being able to hear Sskeer’s “song”.

As this happens, Terec – who is being medically assessed by Rwoh – screams out in pain feeling his brother’s anguish and relays this to Kriss. Kriss immediately contacts Sskeer and asks if Ceret is with him; when Sskeer realizes that the twin is gone rushes into the fields only to find his lightsaber.

What I liked:

A growing plot pivoting off of the bacta manufacturing that was touched on by Jedi Grandmaster Veter; this is much welcomed world building within the parameters that is the High Republic.

A very competent and aptly written investigation, analysis, and deductive reasoning done by the Jedi as a whole. The way the Jedi got on the ship, looked for clues, relayed their information to the data analyst/forensic expert, and hash out a plan to go to the planet where the clue originated from was great and definitely resonated with the idea that these Jedi are analogous to Texas Rangers. They certainly seemed like proto-Jedi investigators, not unlike future Jedi Master Tera Sinube.

The continued delving into Jedi Master Sskeer. I like the balancing act that is being conducted with his character. He’s a virtuous being that is dealing with trauma but, that doesn’t, ultimately, stop him from being a Jedi – it just tests it. He is still a “knight” and applies that chivalry when it needs to shine. Witnessing his accident and how it is affecting his psyche, ability to use the Force, and his morality is the highlight of this issue. This is what should be focused on to establish WHY Keeve looks up to him – give her these thoughts in accordance with herself doubt.

The dynamics of Ceret and Terec as interconnected Force Twins (could be seen as “Dyad Force-bond” inspired). Their link is a double-edged sword that reminds me of the Tomax and Xamot Paoli from Cobra Command. The original Star Wars was centered around Force sensitive twins and it’s nice to see that element played with more here – haven’t really seen that since the Mikkian twin sisters – Tiplee and Tiplar – in Clone Wars.

The holster to the lightsabers – it’s a nice, subtle way to convey how the Jedi of this era are more in a time of peace and reservation. To have a weapon holstered means that they have to take the extra moment to consider brandishing it. This underlying detail syncs really well with the time period considering that most of their enemies would be lifeforms and could be reasoned with – “life is precious.”

This can be seen as succinct yet distinct dichotomy between this era Jedi and the Skywalker Saga Jedi, as their sabers were without a holster and normally fashioned around the hips allowing for both instant access and draw in an age encompassed by war with droids – “droids are replaceable.”

What I disliked:

The application of Keeve’s personality traits continues to feel like a mismatch for the particular time period and volk she supposedly has been training and studying with; Ezra Bridger – who by the High Republic’s standards would not even be a Jedi – acts more like a Jedi than Keeve does. If anything, the uncertainty, quirks, and misapplication of Jedi traditions would have fit Ezra WAY more than it does (or really doesn’t) with Keeve. The concept itself is fine but, the iteration is what is flawed. Keeve is fast feeling more like a Jedi from post revenge Revenge of the Sith – like Kanan Jarrus – that a High Republic Jedi.

The sloppy fan service – there is a scene not only of a Hutt but, the Hutt is dead with its tongue out, surrounded by dead Gamorrean guards. It would be one thing if we just had a dead Hutt, I can even look past the Gamorrean guards (even though it would be nice if we saw this race in more roles than guards – there are some but, it does seem like guards is niche as far as the universe is concerned) but, to also have the Hutt dead with its tongue out to me just screams “DO YOU REMEMBER THAT ONE SCENE IN RETURN OF THE JEDI WITH JABBA?!!!” Just, how much are you going to dilute a reference? Make the fan service substantive and or just not in your face – the Rodian luring Ceret is a good version of fan service; present, notable, but not impeding in terms of the narrative.

What I Marked Off:

The completely wrong depiction of hyperspace; Star Wars Hyperspace is blue and certainly not immersed in stars when one is traveling through it. This error is on the very first page of the issue. This shook me to my very core and yanked me out of the immersion. IT’S THE FIRST PAGE! HOW DOES ONE MESS UP ON THE FIRST PAGE?!!! To add grave insult to mortal injury, hyperspace is a FOCAL element of the High Republic Era – you CAN NOT mess this up. Ultimately, it’s a team mess up but, Scott gets the brunt of this reprimand because this is his story and arguably his script is the one that should be guiding the artist.

The fact that Scott continues to fail to make the necessary references about crucial dynamics, events, and positions within this era. I had to learn from a YouTube video (link below) that Sskeer is actually the “Steward” to Kriss’ Marshall role. As of issue #3, this position is still not established to be held by Sskeer which is a real shame as it adds more substance and weight to his plight as a perturbed Jedi. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TPeRcyJE5dk&feature=emb_title

In summary, this issue was a 7.5 out of 10; slightly better than issue one because of how the writer decided to advance the plot and who he decided to advance the plot with. The genuinely good moments of story-telling are bogged down by ineptitude that can literally throw one out of the immersion. Nonetheless, if you can tolerate the faults there are elements to enjoy, especially when it comes to the characters. I hope those elements promptly become prominent.

Most research on demographic diversity in the workplace revolves around the diversity of age, sex, race and ethnicity. The scientific literature calls these differences “surface-level diversity” because they are immediately observable, biological in nature, and generally immutable. Some people believe these characteristics are reasonable proxies for underlying psychological characteristics and in some cases this may be true. For example, older people tend to feel more satisfied with their lives than their younger counterparts, and women tend to rank higher than men on the personality trait of agreeableness. However, given the huge variation within individual psychology, there are also many instances where you can’t judge a book by its cover.

Furthermore, not all diversity research is equally valuable. For example, some of the literature on surface-level diversity includes organizational tenure and functional background in the same category as age, sex, and race/ethnicity. This is a mistake. It is not possible to determine how long someone has worked in an organization just by looking at them, especially considering how frequently many people move between jobs and companies these days. Nor is it possible to guess a person’s functional background in this way—a uniform can be worn and removed, but this is not possible with age, sex, race, or ethnicity. Functional background is more closely related to deep-level diversity, not surface-level diversity, because it influences characteristics like opinions, beliefs, attitudes, and values more than our age, sex, or race/ethnicity.

Why does this matter? Because including deep-level variables in experiments designed to measure the effects of surface-level variables like diversity in age, sex, race, and ethnicity inevitably skews the results. For example, an academic article’s abstract may say that surface-level diversity is positively correlated with team performance. Activists and media outlets may therefore assume that the variables responsible for this correlation are sex, age, or race and ethnicity, and encourage race- and sex-based hiring/promotions. In fact, it may be that diversity of organizational tenure (mixing seasoned professionals with newer people with fresh perspectives, and vice versa) or functional background was responsible for higher performance. Consequently, we must treat diversity research with caution.

The research that focuses purely on true surface-level diversity isn’t much better. As David A. Harrison, Kenneth H. Price, and Myrtle P. Bell point out in their literature review and experiment on these two types of diversity (more on this later), the effects of commonly studied surface-level diversity characteristics have been inconsistent across studies, and even within studies. In fact, the findings of surface-level diversity studies have been so inconsistent that they differ on whether or not surface-level diversity has any effect on other variables. Some studies even show that surface-level diversity has negative impacts on factors like organizational commitment and job satisfaction, while others show a positive impact. Curiously, these inconsistencies are particularly strong on the effects of race and sex, the two variables that people tend to be most vocal about.

Harrison et al. suggest that some of this inconsistency may arise from the mistaken belief that demographic differences among employees are highly related to differences in attitudes. They are not. There is no correlation between a person’s race, ethnicity, age, and sex and their attitudes. People of diverse races, ethnicities, ages, and sexes can vary in their opinions, their values, their beliefs, their hobbies, and their priorities. And yet, the diversity train keeps chugging along. Why?

Part of this comes from America’s history of discrimination, particularly along the lines of race and sex. The Emancipation Proclamation sought to correct some of this historical injustice, which the Civil Rights movement and the Civil Rights Act of 1964 sought to further rectify. And because America’s past discrimination was mostly justified with reference to citizens’ surface-level differences, these have been the overwhelming focus of the diversity movement. The problem is that modern diversity initiatives seem to be driven, at least implicitly, by two hypotheses with which many DEI advocates are unfamiliar: the similarity-attraction paradigm and the contact hypothesis.

The similarity-attraction paradigm holds that the more similar we perceive other people to be to ourselves, the more attracted to them we’ll be. However, it is wrong to assume that important similarities are only skin-deep. Before designing their experiment, Harrison et al. conducted a literature review on theoretical perspectives from the fields of organizational behavior, sociology, and social psychology. They found support for the idea that while we initially categorize people based on stereotypes, we modify or replace these stereotypes with “deeper-level knowledge” of these people’s psychological qualities once we get to know them better.

The similarity-attraction paradigm also holds that “similarity in attitudes is a major source of attraction between individuals.” Not race, not ethnicity, not sex, and not age. So, while it’s true that we may use a variety of physical, social, and status traits to try to infer similar attitudes, beliefs, or personality traits in other people, our superficial judgements don’t stay superficial for long. As Byrne and Wong remark in their 1962 study, “subjects initially perceived greater attitudinal dissimilarity between themselves and a stranger of another race,” but when these same subjects learned more about these stranger’s attitudes, “perceptions of attitudinal dissimilarity decreased and interpersonal attraction to the stranger increased.”

Other researchers have found the same thing: over time, as people acquire more information, their perceptions become based more on observed behavior and less on the stereotypes they infer from overt characteristics. In other words, simply spending time together, rather than diversity training, is the catalyst for resolving surface-level diversity conflict. This makes sense when you think about it. Whenever diverse Americans went to war against a common enemy and had to rely on each other to survive and succeed, they came to love and respect each other naturally, regardless of their age, race, ethnicity, or sex. No diversity training was needed.

This feeds into the contact hypothesis, which holds that interpersonal contact between groups can reduce prejudice. This may explain some of the well-intentioned pushes for surface-level diversity as well. Diversity activists may believe that diversity initiatives in every organization will encourage interpersonal contact across groups and diminish intergroup prejudice (even though racial relations have never been better). But this demonstrates an incomplete understanding of the contact hypothesis, which only works if four conditions are met: equal status, common goals, cooperation, and institutional support. And under many diversity initiatives, these four conditions are not only unmet, they are actively sabotaged.

How can people engage under conditions of equal status and cooperative contact if they are taught, especially at a young age, that white people and men have an inherent advantage because of their race and sex? How can people engage in equal status and cooperative contact if they are taught that all white people are inherently racist, ignorant, or evil by virtue of their skin color or that all men are inherently sexist, domineering, and oppressive by virtue of their sex? How can people feel they have fair institutional support when diversity initiatives incessantly push for hiring and promoting people based on immutable surface-level traits, even going so far as to segregate workers into so-called “employee resource groups” based on race, ethnicity, sex, and sexuality?

DEI initiatives that teach people you can judge the content of a person’s character by the color of their skin, their ethnicity, their sex, or other immutable characteristics, are an affront to both morality and science. The science shows that it is our deep-level differences or similarities that truly matter, and we cannot derive one from the other. Scientific research on diversity supports the importance of deep-level similarities, especially in attitudes. As Harrison et al. point out, “the few studies that have examined the consequences of similarity in attitudes and values in work groups” found that the more similar supervisors and their subordinates were in their attitudes and values, the higher the supervisors rated their subordinates on performance reviews, regardless of age or education, and the more accurately they rated their peers.

Harrison et al. also cite other studies that found similarity in attitudes to be associated with higher group cohesiveness. Perceptions of attitude similarity, meanwhile, were “uniquely and positively related to subordinates’ satisfaction, performance ratings, and pay ratings,” meaning that no other factors could explain the positive relationship between attitude similarity and these other variables. This shouldn’t be too surprising because attitude similarity is one of the most important predictors of attraction and friendship in general, and there’s no reason to think it would be any different in the workplace.

Harrison et al. point out that when people share the same attitudes, they tend to fight less and communicate more, which reduces stress and leads to lower role conflict and role ambiguity. In their study, they collected two samples from two very different workplaces. One sample included 39 groups of people in a medium-sized hospital for a total of 443 people, and the other included 32 groups of people working in the deli-bakery sections of a regional grocery store chain with an average of 13 people per group. For surface-level diversity variables, they measured the participants’ age, sex, race, and ethnicity. For deep-level diversity variables, they measured each employee’s overall job satisfaction, supervisory satisfaction, work satisfaction, organizational commitment, time spent in their groups, and group cohesiveness (how “psychologically linked or attracted” group members feel toward “interacting with one another in pursuit of a common objective”).

The results of this study reveal a truth that contradicts the current diversity narrative pervading the United States: the longer group members work together, the less impact surface-level diversity has on how well they work, and the more deep-level diversity matters. Contrary to what many diversity activists claim, for both groups of employees, it is not the diversity of race, ethnicity, sex, or age that matters, it is the opportunities for team members to engage in meaningful interactions with each other over time.

The authors’ preliminary analysis undercut the importance of surface-level variables too. They found:

A significant correlation between perceptions of personality differences and how committed the subjects were to their organization and how satisfied they were in their jobs.

A significant correlation between perceptions of differences in value and how satisfied the subjects were with their supervisors.

A significant correlation between perceived differences in interests and supervisor satisfaction and work satisfaction.

Group cohesiveness—how well the group works together—was significantly correlated with the subjects’ perceptions of differences in their personalities, values, and interests. The only criteria that did not significantly correlate with group cohesiveness were surface-level characteristics like age and ethnicity. This was especially true over time. The researchers found that deep-level diversity “has steadily stronger consequences for groups than demographic diversity as group members spend more time together.” They suggest it might not be time itself that matters, but information:

Demographic factors are often a poor surrogate for the deeper-level information people need to make accurate judgments about the similarity of attitudes among group members. Time merely allows more information to be conveyed. Indeed, it might be more appropriate to think of the richness of interactions as the conduit for information exchange (cf. Daft & Lengel, 1986).

The more time people spend together, the more opportunities they have to learn about each other, especially if they work interdependently on a variety of meaningful tasks. These exchanges “allow group members to learn deeper-level information about their psychological similarity to or dissimilarity from their coworkers, where before they would have used surface-level demographic data as information proxies.”

So, why haven’t we heard about all this before? And why hasn’t other research shown similar results? The answer, according to the authors, is simple. Previous research may have discovered different findings because previous researchers did not compare the “relative contributions of surface- and deep-level variables” with “rich interactions among group members.” In other words, diversity researchers were only looking skin-deep, so their conclusions were skin-deep. It may sound like a trite cliché, but what truly matters is on the inside and “the relevant deep-level variables . . . that bear directly on the fundamental purposes of the group”:

In a jazz band or a marketing team, the consensus on the value of creative freedom might be paramount. In a day care center, the critical values to share might deal with nurturance and patience.”

And in academia, we want to ensure that everyone is committed to freedom of inquiry, freedom and encouragement of honest and civil disagreement, and the value of critical thinking. It may not be as easy to measure as simply asking people what they believe, but it is a far better starting place than mistakenly using surface-level variables as proxies for deep-level characteristics as many DEI consultants, activists, and ideologues suggest.

If you’re thinking about hiring a diversity “expert” to help your diverse teams function better, think again. Your employees don’t need help seeing their surface-level differences. They already notice them and they probably don’t care. Whatever conflict there is in your teams most likely has nothing to do with their surface-level traits, and if you call attention to it, you will simply reinforce surface-level divisions rather than creating deep-level harmony.

To make your diverse teams work well together, simply allow them to engage in meaningful, interdependent tasks, and give them plenty of time to get to know each other on a deeper level. It’s that simple.

By doing this, you show your partner you care about them beyond a physical level and you’re interested in what they think/feel. The next big aspect to affect love is the Nodes of the Moon changing May 6th. The North Node will be in Gemini and the South Node in Sagittarius. Tsurune Flower Analysis—the Twins and Shuu

Senichi & Manji

アマリリス/Amaryllis (JPN)

Amaryllis have quite a few meanings in hanakotoba, with one of them seemingly contradictory to the other meanings. First, we have ‘splendid beauty’: the twins, like much of the cast, are definitely attractive (perhaps them being twins give them an extra boost?) so that speaks for itself.

Next up are ‘pride’ and ‘talkativeness’, which one could very easily relate to Senichi and Manji given the way they act about themselves and towards most other people. Particularly with their no holds barred way of speaking and how they seem to intentionally rile up some that they know can’t say much against them due to their difference in ability. In both the novel and anime we can see their pride in their technique as archers (at times to the point of haughtiness), so much that they’re not afraid to go toe to toe against someone they feel they can best in archery. This is particularly best illustrated in the novel (book 2, chapter 1 part 2). The twins were unmatched at their current middle school until they saw Shuu perform at a competition, which at the time they saw as a challenge. It’s very much known the both of them admire Shuu’s skills, but their underlying motive was to initially get close to him to ‘steal his skills’. However, their intentions changed not too long after.

Which brings me to the last, 内気 (uchiki). Most translations would give you ‘timid’ or ‘shy’ but the word also means ‘unsure’ or ‘diffident’, hinting at a lack of self-confidence. I feel the latter meanings apply better to the twins, though the anime understandably hasn’t touched up on contents from book 2 as much, but we see a better hint of this early into it. In the same chapter Senichi, describes himself as a ‘cheap, insignificant existence’ against someone like Shuu especially after the prefectural tournament, which is quite a blow to himself considering that between the brothers, he idolizes Shuu more. As for Manji, the same feeling comes earlier than his brother’s, dealing with his bout of hayake which—as we’ve seen with Minato—heavily derails an archer’s confidence. During the finale, he’s even shown crying, the weight of Kirisaki’s loss and his own frustration about contributing to it likely coming down on him.

Amaryllis (Western)

The Amaryllis flower with its unique design is simply eye-catching; it’s no wonder it holds the meaning of beauty and attention. In the Victorian Era, they considered these flowers as a symbol of one’s vanity and strong pride. To this day, people have associated these flowers to these meanings. Considering these messages, it’s accurate to match them with the twins. When they first appeared on screen, they’re shown bickering with each other about hitting the other’s target. Motomura comments on their fast shooting and anyone watching would clearly be entranced by the speed of their release, wondering how anyone could hit at such a pace. How they talked with Kazemai upon meeting them and insulted their team as well as made fun of Minato’s hayake shows them to be prideful and cocky.

Their ability to shoot faster than anyone and manage a hit also captures the attention of the viewers, much like the flower itself with its unique design. Being prideful also means they strive for attention, and we can see how the twins seem to do just that for Shuu. Their trait of firing insults to their enemies also raises their potential for having enemies, and that can be considered as getting their opponents’ attention as well. However, despite their prideful acts, no one can deny that the twins also have a sort of beauty in them. Appearance-wise, their similarities also make them unique from others. But under all their cockiness, they can also have a soft side to them as shown by how their character improves as the story progresses in the novel. We also get to see a difference in their personalities which can make them distinguishable after Manji develops hayake, and that can be considered a beautiful development for these two.

Shuu

チューリップ/Tulip (JPN)

In hanakotoba, white tulips can signify “lost love”. When we mention love, people immediately consider romantic or passionate love, but in this case, there is a difference when you consider the kanji (失われた愛) where the character for “love” is read as “ai” and can be translated in the general sense of love. Associating this with Shuu could mean the love he had lost from his mother. In the novel, it was explained how Shuu’s mother never treated him as her own son with the excuse that she’s no good with children. Shuu was taken care of by nurses and his grandparents as he grew up. From this background, we can grasp the idea that he was unable to obtain the love of a mother since childhood. Another thing we can consider about lost love could be his love for kyuudou. In the last episode of the anime, Shuu missed his final shot because he wasn’t “looking at the target”, unlike Minato. This means he was more focused on his opponent than on his own form. His insecurity grew and little by little as he had lost the actual meaning of doing kyuudou.

In the OVA, Masa-san compares kyuudou with falling in love and stated that Shuu had never been in love. He says that doing kyuudou involves entering a state of ego-annihilation, where one exists with only an awareness of themself and the bow. Shuu may have loved kyuudou, but he has yet to reach this state as Minato and Masa-san have, and we have yet to find out if he will anytime soon.

The flower also holds another meaning: Fame. This we can easily associate with Shuu considering how he’s known in various schools as the unstoppable Young Prince. With his skills in kyuudou and the beauty of his form and shots, everyone is easily enthralled just by watching him. His record of being unbeatable also makes him well-known.

Tulip (Western)

Tulips have a rather romantic meaning in the English world. General meanings are fame, charity, declaration of love, perfect lover, perfect/deep love, and rebirth. Meanings specific to the color white include worthiness and forgiveness. “Fame” can possibly allude to Shuu’s reputation in the archery world and as the Young Prince within Kirisaki due to his immense skill, as it’s been implied that he has some level of popularity at Kirisaki. “Declaration of love” could point towards Shuu’s feelings towards archery or that famous scene in Episode 8 at the end where Shuu told Minato to ‘take responsibility.’ “Perfect and/or deep love” may be alluding to Shuu’s deep appreciation of archery. “Rebirth” in the metaphorical sense could likely refer to Shuu’s slowly changing attitude about kyuudou; in the anime, he says that one shouldn’t shoot for the sake of someone else, though it sounds more cutting than what Shuu actually means. The director mentions the particular line in their interview in the fanbook and says that when Shuu says this he does recognize Seiya’s skills as an archer, however, as someone who strongly cares about kyuudou, he’d like if Seiya cared more about improving himself because he cared about the sport rather than just for Minato’s sake. Ultimately, at that point Shuu regards kyuudou as something you improve at for your own sake, the members of Kirisaki noting that he doesn’t really give advice or offer help unless you approach him. But in chapter 1 of book 2, he voluntarily asks Minato for advice to help with Manji’s hayake, later even joining Sase and Motomura to ask their coach to let Manji remain in the team as both the twins would quit should Manji have been dropped from the main team. He even says (in chapter 2) that he’d like to remain in a team with them.
