I thought this The VVitch poster looked familiar. The picture is an engraving by Cesare Vecellio. I saw it in a costume guide on the British Library site while doing an assignment for a Shakespeare class.
Specially, on Romeo and Juliet. The pic has nothing to do with witchcraft. Definitely spooky to a modern audience, though.
Vecellio explains how noble girls are guarded by their fathers, only leaving their homes on rare occasions for church or holy days. When they do so, they must wear a silk veil or fazzuolo.

Маяк (2019)
Tumblr media
Значительная часть фильма снята при реальном шторме, стихия на экране - моё увожение Посмотрел давеча я фильм Маяк. Это второй полнометражный фильм Роберта Эггерса. Первый - Ведьма (The VVitch: A New-England Folktale.
Tumblr media
Tumblr media

The Witch: A New-England Folktale (Robert Eggers, 2015)
Cast: Anya Taylor-Joy, Ralph Ineson, Kate Dickie, Harvey Scrimshaw, Ellie Grainger, Lucas Dawson, Julian Richings, Bathsheba Garnett, Sarah Stephens. Screenplay: Robert Eggers. Cinematography: Jarin Blaschke. Production design: Craig Lathrop. Film editing: Louise Ford. Music: Mark Ford.
Robert Eggers's The Witch has a subtitle, A New-England Folktale, that is essential to understanding what the writer-director is up to with the film: an evocation of the state of mind of a place and period. (The hyphen in the subtitle is a deliberate archaism, as is the on-screen spelling “VVitch.”) Because without recognizing this aim, we are left with merely a genre piece, a horror movie to be reeled out every Halloween season. Or else we're seeing a movie which asserts that the Puritans of 17th-century Salem, Mass., were justified in their persecution of women they thought to be witches. Both of those aims for the film hardly justify the care Eggers took in researching and re-creating the speech and the dress of the people who set out in the wilderness of America, not to mention their anxious, terrifying belief in both God and Satan. Eggers's film is a work of art, as potent as the painting that may have inspired it, Francisco Goya's “Witches’ Sabbath (The Great He-Goat).” It's an often harrowing film that transcends the genre it's usually assigned to, thanks to meticulous production design and intelligently cast actors, then mostly unknown. (It was Anya Taylor-Joy's first film.) If I have a quibble, it's that my aging eyes have trouble with the cinematography, designed to use only available light (and dark), so others have seen things in its shadows, particularly in the abduction of the infant Samuel, where I saw only shapes and blurs. But that seems to be a feature of Eggers's films, including The Lighthouse (2019) and The Northman (2022), and not a bug. An altogether satisfying debut for Eggers, as well as Taylor-Joy.

The Witch's House: Diary of Ellen
Tumblr media
The Diary of Ellen is a story about Ellen's life before the events that of the main game. It depicts the story of how she met Viola and ends where the game starts. In fact some of the book is found in the games as diary entries. I want to try to make it so the cutscenes or flashbacks are portrayed like book pages. Even have the whole game play out as a story in a book.

The VVitch: A New-England Folktale (2015)
Tumblr media
I was looking into story's about witches when I encountered this movie/book. It's a horrifying tale of 17th-century New England, where witches roam the deep, dark forest kidnapping settlers’ children so they can boil down their fat and bones for ointments which help them to fly. I want to use the idea of witches wanting to get children into the cauldron as the way reason for the witch to be after us. I don't think ill stick to it being for ointments for flying and would rather it be for something else but that something to worry about later.

Monster House
Tumblr media
I was looking at how I could have the mansion that the game will take place in more scary and stumbled on this movie. A haunted house that has intent to kill you is a something I will try to incorporate in the game. The game would have puzzles and traps and A lot of them will involve the mansion coming to life and attacking you like a wall falling on you or books flying in your general direction.

Coraline
Tumblr media
The movie had a theme of portal travel the lead to other worlds which interested me in how they did it. I like the idea of travelling to a parallels universe of sorts whilst traveling the house. I'm interested in having sections of the game where you go through an "Other world" similar to the real world that you need to travel to make progress.

Hotel Transylvania
Tumblr media
The movie showed us how life is like in a monster society for humans and vice versa. The idea of having monsters live in their own little society is something I want to explore in my game. Like a cave under the mansion that is occupied with monsters that live there in fear of the witch.

The Witch (2015, Robert Eggers)
14/01/2024
The Witch (The VVitch: A New-England Folktale) is a 2015 film written and directed 5Robert Eggers.
The cast includes Anya Taylor-Joy (in her big screen debut), Ralph Ineson, Kate Dickie, Harvey Scrimshaw, Ellie Grainger and Lucas Dawson. Set in the 1630s, the film follows a Puritan family who encounter evil forces in the woods beyond their New England farm.
An international co-production between the United States and Canada, The Witch premiered at the Sundance Film Festival on January 27, 2015, where it won Best Director, and was released theatrically by A24 on February 19, 2016.
New England, 1630s. William, a religious preacher, together with his wife Katherine and five children - his daughter Thomasin, his son Caleb, the twins Mercy and Jonas and the newborn Samuel - is removed from the Puritan community in which he lives for his extremism in the interpretation of the word of God. He thus goes near a forest, in the hope of living in a humble and peaceful way, practicing agriculture and breeding to feed his family.
The disappearance of the youngest child progressively triggers hatred between family members, who are pitted against each other by lies, omissions, superstitions and mutual accusations.
Caleb also disappears in the woods. When the boy is found he is taken home where he wakes up and later expels a bite-marked apple from his mouth; Katherine aks all the family members to pray, but the twins claim not to remember the words of the Lord's Prayer and during the prayer they end up having convulsions and losing consciousness.
Left completely alone and without hope for the future, Thomasin decides to also speak to the goat - who turns out to be the Devil - who entices her with promises of wonderful news and pleasures, finally persuading her to sign the cursed manuscript. Stripped of all her clothes and her faith, the girl goes into the woods and here she finds a congregation of witches dancing around the fire.
The director decided to refer to a topic that had aroused his interest during his adolescence, namely witches understood according to the Christian concept.
The horror film is an international co-production of the United States, United Kingdom and Canada, which premiered at the 2015 Sundance Film Festival and became a wide release on February 19, 2016, on behalf of A24. In the final part we read that the film is derived directly from "newspapers, diaries and judicial reports of the time (17th century)". In the United States it was released on February 19, 2016, while in Italy it was released in cinemas on August 18 of the same year.
