Leif

"Leif is one of the protagonists of Bug Fables, they're a cordyceps fungus inside a moth host. They've been in some other tournaments (notably the graveyard gambit tourney, for zombie characters). There are other cordyceps in Bug Fables but since Leif is a protagonist they're the most qualified for polls in general. They're an ice wizard who uses plural pronouns (we/us/our), has Fungus Autism(m), and their favorite things are food, cute creatures, and card games. They had a wife and kids, they don't know what glasses are, and sometimes they speak in keysmashes. Not to be biased but they're the best character ever made” - Submission 46

Can you talk about your awakened beast a bit?

Sure can!

There is some examples of Lesser bugs being awakened in the Bug Fables, that including False Monarch, that spider in the Forsaken Lands and The Wizard - which brought me to the idea that many creatures out there can be turned into sentient and see how the plot goes. So, adding the usual stuff of "making villains good", also my love for friend monsters trope and bias towards centipedes, resulted in Awakened Beast.

She (of course, it is not stated in game what gender The Beast is, but here she is a female) actually has two separate variants. In first, you've seen, she is anthropomorphic. In second - she remains in the same feral form, but both follow the same route. From the beginning, she understands that something is different about her. Well, in case of anthro form this is obvious. In feral - she notices how her behavior is different from other centipedes and how she discovers her ability to learn and use thinking to plan everything.

She grows in a hostile Swamplands, and most of other centipedes are being hunted down by Leafbugs, who doesn't like nasty ravenous creatures near them. But wits and later - sheer brute strength helped her to survive.

Anthro beast also learned intimidation, and after some initial forces tried to slaughter her, picked up their masks and started to use as trophies. To send the message, that is.

The Beast lives like this until the arrival of northland beetle trio.

She's not, per se, actively hostile - she just understands that killing is crucial for her survival, so never hesitant to take lives on a hunt and in a self-defense. Thus, seeing seemingly sentient (just like her!) bugs piques her interest and she stalks them for a few days. Already grasping the concept of speech from the Leafbugs, she also starts to discern the Bugnish speech - simple certain words, but enough. When beetles are attacked by overwhelming amounts of Leafbugs, she also intervenes to help, because concept of "enemy of my enemy" she somewhat understands.

Intimidated, but grateful, they grudgingly accept her help. She carries them away, towards her shelter, where they spend a few days while the team rests and heals, and Beast picks up even more words, and then tries to communicate. After the superficial healing is finished, she helps them to leave the Swamplands, because mounted wounds turns out to be serious and some beetles needed professional treatment.

There is a bit more story for later, but I hope to tell it not in the notes, but by pics and writings.

I understand there's been a lot of discourse lately regarding whether you should read classic books, but there's been little to no recommendations for beginners. Not to toot my own horn, but I thought I could help solve this problem. Due to length, I'm going to avoid including my take on the discourse. Below is a list of recommendations. Content warnings are available on StoryGraph.

Recommendations

So, you want to read a classic book but have no idea where to start. I'll start with a list of how to get books for cheap, then I'll recommend some short stories, before finally recommending full books.

Cheap books:

I'd recommend getting a library card first and foremost. This will allow you to not only take home books for free, but to download apps (Libby, Hoopla) that will loan out free ebooks.

If, like me, your local library is inaccessible (nearly all of mine are closed for renovations currently), you can use Thriftbooks.com, Barnes and Noble, Bookoutlet.com, or any other bookseller.

Mass market paperbacks are designed to be cheap, and sellers like Dover Thrift or Signet Classics are incredibly accessible. Puffin Classics are also cheap.

Most classic children's books are cheap. Anne of Green Gables, Aesop's Fables, Grimm's Fairy Tales, The Wind in the Willows, The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, The Hobbit, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, The Secret Garden, Winnie the Pooh, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, A Wrinkle in Time, The Call of the Wild, many of these can be easily found and are cheap. Don't stick in this section forever though; these are children's books for a reason. This is a good starting point to get into the habit of reading, but move onto adult books as you go.

Short Stories:

Those Who Walk Away From Omelas: a perfect town has a secret. This author has also written tons of other works!

Harrison Bergeron: through the use of physical handicaps, everyone is finally equal. I love this author as well! (And before you get the wrong idea, he isn't a bigot. He's been fighting for Black, disabled, transgender, and LGBTQ rights long before it was socially acceptable.)

The Lottery: everyone in town partakes in a mysterious lottery.

I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream: AI takes over the world and holds five people captive.

The Necklace: a vain woman requires that she wear the highest-quality jewelry to a gathering, and pays a high price for it. If you like plot twists, you have to read this.

The Tell-Tale Heart: a man kills another man, and tries to convince both you and himself that he is sane.

Barbie-Q: a short story about growing up Mexican in poverty, and the beauty standards American society forces on us.

Tell Them Not to Kill Me!: an old man tries to avoid being killed.

Young Goodman Brown: it's been years since I read it, but a Puritan comes across devil worship in the woods.

Books:

Many of these will be novellas, which are shorter books.

I'd also recommend reading the full works of the short story authors you like.

The Stranger: a man who seemingly has no emotions kills someone.

Metamorphosis: Gregor Samsa wakes up one day to find he has turned into a giant bug.

Animal Farm: animals seek to establish a utopia in which everyone is equal.

The Pearl: a poor man finds a pearl that can change his family's life forever. (Warning: this one is particularly graphic.)

The Death of Ivan Ilych: a man who lived a superficial life dies.

A Christmas Carol: Ebenezer Scrooge, a greedy old man, is sent to the past and future to learn from his mistakes.

Siddhartha: an Indian Brahmin leaves everything to look for meaning.

The Giver: a young boy is tasked with holding all of his society's memories.

The Outsiders: a boy and his friend who live in poverty, and who are at constant war with their rich classmates, go too far one night.

Slaughterhouse Five: prisoners of war during World War II are treated like cattle and survive the bombing of Dresden.

Hamlet: a man has to reconcile with his father's death, and his mother's remarriage to his uncle. (If Shakespeare is difficult for you, read the No Fear Shakespeare edition. You can find it for cheap.)

Feel free to read anything apart from this list, and to recommend other works. These are just works I've read and liked.

Shorter Headcannons, partially based on cannon

only Origin Characters, not really spoilery, mainly based on their actual character sheets (bc i wanted to thank Larian, so i bought the special edition)

Color-coded bc i know how this fandom works Lae'zel, Wyll, Karlach, Shadowheart, Gale, Astarion, Halsin

Lae'zel and Wyll commit to some fighting practice when they're left in camp

Gale, as the main cook, prepares native dishes from water deep (lentil and bunny stew, cheesy bread, all while using the totally legit foodomancy)

Astarion getting up in the middle of the night, he says to "keep watch" but everyone secretly knows that he wants to do his hair, brush his teeth etc.

Lae'zel offering to hunt & Astarion offering to drink the blood of the game to "make it less messy to dissect it" and Lae'zel refusing

Shadowheart sneaking away to think/talk to herself, basically keeping an internal diary

Gale innitially refusing to talk to Astarion because he knew something was off, but later finding him trying to make conversation with Astarion again as they both know quite a bit of magic / Gale cannonically being too curious for his own good

Wyll and Astarion peacocking at every possible opportunity, to the point they have a fencing match over something stupid (and everyone looking at them like "well if you wanna 'swordfight' why can't you two just get in a tent and have it over with?)

Karlach waking everybody (except Lae'zel and Astarion) sweetly and making coffee (don't know why, i see her as an early riser?)

Wyll innitially refusing to take Astarion take watch, but one evening they have a heart-to-heart about Wyll needing more Rest than Astarion

Gale trying to meditate, under the guidance of Halsin and utterly failing bc he either sees Mystra and shuts down, or because he get's to excited

Karlach and Astarion playing Dice, with him trying to rig the game, but Karlach being too aware (she has them in their inventory)

Shadowheart, Lae'zel and Gale playing chess (Lae'zel has it in their inventory) and Shadowheart outmanouvering Gale by distracting him

Halsin whittling custom spoons and bowls for everyone, as a sign of admiration / thanks

Shadowheart and Gale discussing their connection to their gods, healing and alchemy

IF you romance Karlach you'll wake up some day with a teddy bear next to you, you know it's her's so you'll ask her why she gave it to you, with her saying "Sounds like you had a bad dream Solider, so i asked Clive to protect you"

IF you romance Halsin, you'll randomly being invited to a night stroll where he shows you cool mushrooms, glowing bugs and beautiful flowers - he'll also making you flower crowns

IF you romance Wyll, he'll talk to you about his favorite dances, stories and asking you what you think of them (because they are actually fables and he asks you for your opinion)

IF you romance Lae'zel, she'll sharpen your weapon, collect things useful for you and offer to carry part of your load

Finally, we get the opportunity to put our Spy Cards worldbuilding in a work. Though there are many questions about such things as "regulation" "how these cards are printed" "who approves a single spy card", and so on, we are here to present a bold new take: this game is based like 60% on obscure roach memory-reading tech that got turned into a card game with absolutely No card-game-related intentions included in the original tech and most of the card vetting is just from the fact that there aren't too many card printers out there and most of them make cards that need to be translated from Roach.

Strictly speaking, as a card game, it is not a terribly good or well-balanced one. It's popular primarily because of a mix of the difficulty involved in getting the data for high-level cards, the fun of seeing the variety of monsters that can be brought to the table, and the incredible amounts of ham and drama that goes into specifically the professional scene.
