Addams Family style house was built in 1850 and is a fixer upper that looks a little haunted. It’s in Bellefonte, Pennsylvania, has 6bds. 4ba. and is listed for $400K.

Central hall needs a little pizazz. 

This is about the only room that was redone. It’s light, bright, and the floor is beautiful. Plus, it has a great original fireplace.

And, here’s another room for comparison- it does have beautiful wainscoting and crown molding, plus a great fireplace.

This room has lovely floor to ceiling windows and also has a fireplace and inlaid flooring.

The kitchen is dated and needs a refresh. The cabinets are in good shape and can be refinished and given new hardware.

Here’s a bd. It looks a little small.

The bath needs a gut- look at the big plunger, so it must get clogged, too. 

This appears to be a separate apt., b/c it has a kitchenette.

Bedroom that needs paint and flooring. The windows are very nice, though.

I would say that this looks like a laundry room.

And, we have a bd. with a cool wizard mural. Look at the old portraits they left.

It looks like they’re putting new fixtures in this large bath.

They liked to put kitchen sinks all over the house. 

Not a bad bd. 

Another bd. with a nice fireplace. They both have cute nooks.

The back of the house has a nice covered patio as well as a side patio.

Plus, there’ another home on the property.

So, it looks like this residence has tenants.

Has a tub, shower, and newer sink.

Plus 1 bd.

It’s so cute.

And, there’s the main house. Looks like a nice neighborhood. Home is on .46 acre.

I saw someone post an #bweirdOCtober prompt and was inspired to join! I don’t have a lot of energy and I want to put what I can into actually writing so this is going to be all fun, as little effort as possible. I’m drawing from both my ‘professional’ writing OCs and my TTRPG OCs, whichever fit. Not literally drawing, btw, I’m a writer. Unless I get really inspired.

Prompt 1: Fave OC

I will take this as: OC that has been on my mind a lot, because I can’t actually pick favourites.

Linn (or, Galinndan Liadon) is my character in a DnD campaign one of my brothers DM’s. They’re an elven knight (cavalier fighter subclass) who disappointed their family by not being as stuck up as them and also getting into a romance with a member of a rival family, so they sent them out to adventure to ‘prove themself’ (or, be someone else’s problem).

They’re traveling with their boyfriend and their cousin/squire as their retainers (boyfriend has since been updated to sidekick; he’s a bard) and my partner’s character, a human who was taken in by their family after his whole family got murdered under suspicious circumstances. As for the other party members, well, I don’t need to go into them because they just keep dying and being replaced by new ones! My brothers (the two who are not the DM) have had to make new characters at least three times now, while my and my partner’s character keep surviving.

Which is why Linn has been on my mind, because they’re trying to be a noble knight, protector of good and the common folk, and they just keep losing people! On top of that, every time they try the get help from an authority figure, they turn out to be corrupt—our DM has tried to make us choose between these rulers who are each horrible in their own way and we just keep going ‘nope, you’re evil, fuck you’ while occasionally begrudgingly working with them when our goals happen to align… In short, Linn is having a crisis of conscience and it’s very interesting to roleplay. I hope they can save the world and remain a good person, but I can see them giving up on adventuring and running away with their boyfriend, or just straight up giving up on life and turning evil.

Oh, I forgot to mention there’s a possibly evil dwarven wizard living in their head who keeps trying to possess them!

This campaign is a great example of what I love about TTRPGs as a form of storytelling—it’s great practice for my character and worldbuilding muscles, because you’re never in total control and are forced to think about situations you’d never imagine on your own. And especially as a player there’s not a lot of pressure to get it ‘right’, it’s about having fun together and seeing where things lead. I was initially struggling to make Linn adhere to their initial character traits, before realising that everything that happened could change a person—and that made much more sense.

UMM have you ever written about/can you talk about Solveig's backstory?? I am SO intrigued by what you mentioned in the tags of that post about what she might see if the phantasmal killer spell is cast on her!

There is something everyone with OC dreams of receiving one day and it's a question about their backstory. My life is kinda crazy right now (that's why your previous ask is still in my inbox, I'll answer it soon I swear 😭) but I can't resist writing about my beloved Solveig.

It's going to be a longer post and English it's not my first language so I apologize for any mistakes in advance.

TW: Domestic violence

Solveig comes from a wealthy family. Not patriar level of wealth but money wasn't much of a problem for them. Her mother, Vibekke, is a retired adventurer and treasures she gathered in her youth were more than enough for a good life. Solveig had a happy childhood despite growing up without a father (that's a story for another time). She spend her time mostly playing with other kids and her twin sister Linn who unfortunately lost genetic lottery and didn't inherit sorcerer magic. The girls were given a proper education. Solveig discovered her artistic talents and Linn was on the right path to one day study in Waterdeep to become a wizard. Everything was lovely.

Until it wasn't.

When Solveig was 15 her mother's health got worse. Her condition was treatable but the cost of medications and proper care have quickly consumed most of the family fortune. Sisters were trying to earn some money but who is going to employ two teenagers and pay them well enough? Two years later when her family was on a verge of poverty, Solveig started to pray at Stormshore Tabernacle regularly. And that's where she had met lord Ruadhan Heffernan, who offered her solution to all her problems.

To say Heffernan was rich would be an understatement. His family's wealth was impressive even among the nobility of Baldur's Gate, he had everything - title, money, respect, authority. But nobody is perfect in eyes of high society and people have found something on Ruadhan - he wasn't married. People started to gossip, calling him a miser or an impotent (sometimes both, depends on who you would ask).

He presented himself to Solveig as a man who needed to save his reputation and honor but who also was such a kind soul that wanted to help a poor girl in need. He was reliable, calm, sensible - everything Solveig needed at the time. She needed money to save her mother, he need a wife to save himself from judging eyes of patriars. And he wasn't even much older than her, and was quite a gentlemen... And she agreed.

Couple months later, the day Solveig turned 18, they got married. Solveig suddenly had to remember all those strangers who attended her wedding because they were important and know the complex etiquette. Maybe it wasn't the happiest day of her life but now she had enough money to provide a good care for her mother and she could even put her sister in a good academy in Waterdeep. Her own happiness didn't matter, the family had to come first.

For the first couple of months things were fine. Solveig didn't notice small signs that something was off - her letters would go missing, she couldn't leave her new house alone and she didn't really know where her money was. Before she knew, she became a prisoner and Raudhan's mask started to fall. He wasn't a mere noble. He was a cleric of Tiamat and had a high position in an enclave of Cult of the Dragon in Baldur's Gate (Tiamat is an evil dragon goddess, her cult tries to bring her to the material plane every now and then to take over the world basically).

But he wasn't satisfied with a high position. He wanted to be a leader and even more - a chosen of Tiamat. Solveig had a missing piece of his puzzle - direct connection to draconic bloodline. He blackmailed her into cooperation, saying her mother and sister were at his mercy now. So Solvieg gritted her teeth and agreed.

He was showing her to other followers as his trophy - daughter of metalic dragons, now corrupted in the name of their Queen. He was using her and her blood in rituals for Tiamat. Solveig still remembers how it felt to be a part of it. Stench of dark magic. Sensation of something being taken from her. Overwhelming presence of something far greater than her, ever watching, ever waiting and never fully satisfied.

Solveig tried to find an excuse why she couldn't be a part of Cult's activity. In the first few months when she still had some sort of contact to outside world, she was using meetings with important people (sometimes meetings that didn't even exists). "It will greatly benefit you as well the whole church, my lord. I will expand our connections and gather new allies" - she said that so often only to get out of the mansion for few hours (even if it was under constant surveillance). She tried to subtly get help and inform someone that the cult of chaotic evil goddess had it's temple under her house. Everytime Heffernan's servant interrupted and inform his master about Solveig's little treason.

Sometimes Raudhan mocked her for even trying to do something against him. He often tried to make her feel bad for betraying him. "I've given you everything a woman can dream of. You were destined to rot on the streets when we met and look at you now - a lady of a noble house. You could also try be a noble wife, you know? But you've chosen to hurt me and everything I've worked on for years. Is this your way of saying thank you? Don't you think I deserve more than a dagger in the back? What would your poor mother said about this?".

But one time she made him furious.

Someone from the Flaming Fist had sensed that something was wrong with the Heffernans and one day an elf showed up at the door, young investigator named Kalar. Solveig wanted to tell him everything and beg him to free her but Raudhan was watching and he knew that the Fist was here because of her. That day ended in tears, screams and Solveig getting locked in the room with a silence spell casted on it. She still doesn't know how long she's stayed there or what exactly happened to her during this time. All she remembers is a nearly empty room, bathed in total silence and a window too small to even jump through. Solveig was ready to die there until one day a crow tapped on her window. The bird had a short message: "I can help you".

Kalar got suspended after he visited their house but he didn't give up on his investigation. He wanted to help her. Solveig was suspicious and careful at first but she quickly started to plan her escape with him. Before she could start thinking about anything else, she needed to get out of this bloody mansion. They figured out almost everything - how to get out and the shortest way to the temple of Ilmater where someone offered to hide her - from there she could try to get Raudhan arrested/killed or at least get a divorce. There was one little problem - she couldn't leave the room she was locked in.

So she decided to wait.

One day Solved had finally heard a sound for the first time in gods know how long, as the door to her prison opened. Raudhan was standing there with a wide smile on his face. He told her in the most gentle and sweet tone she'd ever heard that the previous leader of the Cult was dead. Killed by some warlock who caught him by surprise during a failed attempt of summoning Tiamat. "This could be our moment. That is, if you finally understood your mistakes". Solveig nodded and played her part. She will give Raudhan what he wants for now. She will let him think he broke her spirit, wait for him to let his guard down and then she will have her freedom.

She started to participate in the rituals again. Eventually she started to fell sick. Magic the cultists were using drained her and effects of it started to show. She's became paler, weaker, lost weight. She had to escape and quickly before the rituals kill her. Luckily for her Raudhan gave her a bit of freedom around the house. Most doors where still locked for her but she wasn't watched all the time.

On one rainy night she finally got an impulse to escape. She had overheard Raudhan's conversation with another cleric of Tiamat. They were discussing interpretations of some sort of prophecy: "... you need to combine her bloodline with yours, Heffernan. You've waited long enough. You may not earn our Queen's blessing but your heir... think of the power they will wield".

An heir? Over her dead body.

She rushed to Raudhan's rooms, she had to find something she could use in court. Or to blackmail him. And then she found it - unsended letters that contained information about the Cult of Dragon and it's activity in Baldur's Gate. Perfect. Now all she had to do was to follow the plan and...

"Lady Heffernan, what are you doing?"

A servant saw her. Panic and will to survive overtook her body. She will either escape today or die trying. For the first time in years she used her magic for herself. Blood of her ancestors was singing in her veins when she covered the room in flames. After that she jumped through the window and while the adrenaline was keeping her going, she run. She left the burning mansion behind her, not looking back until she was in Rivington.

She was free. She had the letters.

For the first few days, she stayed hidden in the temple disguised as one of the monks. Kalar came to her a week later to discuss their next moves. Solveig was almost free at this point, she just needed a piece of paper with a court seal to prove it. She also had to reach out to her family, throughout the years she totally lost contact with them.

Linn was in Waterdeep - far enough from Baldur's Gate and Raudhan Heffernan- or at least that's what claimed an old sailor who was at the same ship as her. Vibekke was at her own house with a healer taking care of her. She was still weak but definitely felt better than all those years ago. It only took a few coins to bring them safely to Rivington. Solveig was finally reunited with her mother. You can only imagine happiness and tears of joy shed by a woman who wasn't allowed to see her family for, as it turned of, a whole decade.

Once she had her family back, Raudhan could no longer use them against her. With the help of Kalar, gold, connections she had made and a little blackmail Solveig was finally able to get a divorce papers signed. She had a feeling the power-hungry cleric of Tiamat won't be stopped so easily by a piece of paper but she could wait a couple more days before putting the rest of the plan in motion, right? Simply enjoy life and catch up on important matters with her mother, contact Linn and maybe try reaching out to her grandparents before going to war with the church of Tiamat.

She had time, right?

And that's when mind flayers attacked...

Hymire Hymire. Evil little vampire/bird thing who's powers stem around life/blood - and the pain of it (very nature red in tooth and claw energy). Delights in tormenting people and showing off how clever he is.

the giant Yā-minteria, warlord type figure who likes fighting and all that and her husband (tiny moth man) Alithanthus.

Conrad - one of Yā-minteria's two sons. Grumpy and proud prince who got his eye stabbed out by his brother and now can't do much magic

Daltin Keen. Serious faced eccentric wizard who thinks too much and not at all at the same time.

Robert Finch. Royal wizard to Fin-es-mal and nervous serious large eyed man who is way too stressed about most things

Bewarice Wren. A small and determined minded child who gains her confidence due to her isolated upbringing

Jaski and iolnus. A fire spirit and a weird forest man who are looking after bewarice for the time being. Possibly only they understand what they're saying half the time

Lacey Cotingir. Sweet voiced stubborn Noble woman who would fight a bear unarmed if you let her.

Faibius Cotingir. Wizard to the crown and general soppy sort of fellow. Will not think badly of anyone and is eternally sad that he cannot be friends with everyone.

Misenbough Hareing. Faibius' much older sister. Very much a force of nature within the family (in many ways everyone does what she says) very anxious and maybe overbearing but well intentioned

(Edward) Harrolds Hareing. Deeply wry and sarcastic man who talks in a really sinister drawl. Currently staying at his brother's (Westrowe) house he mainly hangs out with misenbough and often acts as her right hand man.

“Oh, come on Marilyn, it wasn’t that bad. You make potions sound as if it’s the bane of your existence, when actually you ace the class with no trouble! Me on the other hand, if I fail, I won’t be allowed to help out in the Hospital Wing anymore!”

Calliope groaned, rubbing her hands over her face. She was ranting to her best friend, not that the occurrence was unusual. The two girls often found themselves raving or gossiping about one issue or the next.

“Don’t give me that, Calliope! Both of us know Madame Linn adores you! She’d never let you go, not without a fight!” Marilyn scoffed, blowing out a puff of air. “You know I want to be a world renown potioneer, Cals, which means I have to have top marks!”

“Fine, I relent! Just study for once in your life and maybe you’ll get top marks.” Calliope said with good natured amusement.

“Yeah, yeah, yeah,” Marilyn sighed, shaking her head.

“What are you doing for Christmas next month?” Calliope broached the subject with ease, despite the tension it usually brought.

Marilyn wasn’t fond of discussing holidays, let alone one where she was forced to be in the same household as her mother and father. Their relationship was shaky. Her father wanted a boy, and her mother took her father’s word as gospel. It led to quite a few disagreements between the young teen and her parents, making the holiday’s tense.

“You know you can always come home with me. My mum loves seeing you!” Calliope said, trying to convince the black haired girl to accompany her for the holidays. “The snow is so much more fun with a friend.”

“You know I can’t, Cals, but thank you for the offer.” Marilyn frowned, looking to the ground.

Any trace of the once confident girl had vanished due to the unpleasant conversation. Guilt bubbled in Calliope’s chest, not having meant to spoil her friend’s mood.

“You’ll be late to helping Madame Linn, if you don’t hurry up and go change. You know how she is if you are late.” Marilyn shooed the girl off quickly.

Calliope frowned but nodded, knowing the girl was right. She waved goodbye before skipping her way to the Dungeons. Even as a student, Calliope still had a uniform she had to wear when in the Hospital Wing.

She tapped Helga Hufflepuff’s rhythm against the barrels, humming to the beats. She grinned when the door opened, still not used to seeing it open.

Calliope rushed up the stairs to her dorm, pleased to see her uniform neatly laid upon her bed by the house-elves. She quietly thanked them before quickly changing, knowing she was already running late.

The uniform was altered for her, but still looked similar to Madame Linn’s. It was a knee length, long sleeved grey dress. A white apron was over top of the dress, ruffles around the shoulders. She wore white cotton tights and black mary janes. Her hair was pulled back into a bun, wisps escaping around her face.

Without sparing her appearance another thought, Calliope gracefully sprinted out of the Common Room, attempting to not be late. The Hufflepuff dorms were not close to the Hospital Wing which made her trek there more time consuming in itself, but she wouldn’t trade it for the world. She had been given an unbelievable opportunity, one she would never take for granted.

It had started when she was a 1st year. Her mother had always aimed to help people, and was a healer of sorts. She cared for magical creatures rather than witches and wizards. It wasn’t a job that had much business, but Calliope’s mum had always had a big heart for animals. So naturally, Calliope adopted that goodnatured need to help people.

She had scraped her knee quite badly during Flying class and had been sent to the Hospital Wing. It seemed that day had been quite busy as Madame Linn was running around, somewhat frantic, to help all the students.

Calliope, not wanting to be a bother, sat on the bed and pulled out her wand, muttering a quick spell to ease her pain and then grabbing a specific paste like substance and spreading it over her knee before bandaging it. It was impressive work for a eleven-year-old, and even Madame Linn found herself surprised. After learning Calliope planned to pursue being a Healer, Madame Linn offered her a position in the Hospital Wing to learn, since she had such a knack for it.

The young Hufflepuff gratefully accepted, and the rest was history.

“Miss Patterson, you are late. What is to blame for this tardiness?” Madame Linn’s strict voice called to Calliope.

The girl in question smiled sheepishly.

“Sorry, Madame, simply running a little slow after Potions.” Calliope shrugged. “It won’t happen again.” “It best not. Today seems to be rather busy, what with all the first years attempting their more complicated transfiguration spells. Mostly splinches. Anything more complicated I will handle. Understood, Miss Patterson?” Madame Linn raised an eyebrow and stared the young girl down.

“Crystal clear, Madame. I’ll get started right away.”

Calliope typically handled the less serve cases, often bandaging cuts and scraps, as well as the odd splint for a fracture here and there.

While there was a charm to heal such injuries, Madame Linn often preferred to allow the body to naturally repair itself to a certain extent. There were no concrete studies on how the use of magic to aid in the healing of injuries effected the body longterm. With children so young, Madame Linn simply mixed the magic and natural healing.

Most of the students who found themselves in the Hospital Wing would rather be treated by Calliope though, despite Madame Linn’s extensive training. The young Hufflepuff simply had a better bedside manner, one with a more gentle approach. Some wondered if she were a Veela, always noting how quickly she gained the trust of those she treated. Her personality was intoxicating in a way, and those around her always found themselves opening up about what ailed them, regardless if they had previously spoken to her or not.

Alas, Calliope was no Veela, just a very warm presence. It was quite a useful character to possess when one wished to work a job that often had people clamming up about what had really caused the issue.

“Hello, I’m Calliope,” the blonde girl greeted, smiling at the first year who was sitting on the bed before her. The girl had tears streaming down her face, her lip jutted out in a pout. “Can you tell me your name?”

“J–Jasmine,” the girl cried. There was a gash in her arm and Calliope resisted the urge to tut at the injury.

“Jasmine, that’s a lovely name. Now, Jasmine, would you mind telling me what happened?” It was a question that always had to be asked. Every injury had to have a report filed, and every student had their own file. With how young the girl before Calliope was, it was no surprise that there was no previously existing file to her name.

It was only mid-term, so most of the first years still had no file of their own. It was the thing Calliope hated the most, having to fill out the dreadful reports of how various students had gotten hurt. She much preferred to practice her skills than to be forced to simply write using her knowledge of the subject.

Calliope patched up Jasmine easily, moving on to the next student after giving the girl a piece of chocolate. She noticed the candy calmed most students down, young and old. There was something about the sweet that generally just had a comforting effect.

The brunette saw two other first years with similar injuries to the first girl before a different type of case was sat before her.

It took only seconds for Calliope to realize the boy was quite shy. He refused to look up and meet her eye, his arm cradled to his chest.

She gave him a kind smile, approaching him gently, worried if she spoke to loudly or something of the sort, the already shy and frightened boy would shut down even more.

“Hello there, I’m Calliope, I’ll be helping you out today. Can you tell me your name?” Calliope asked, crouching down before the boy, trying to get him to see that she was only trying to help.

He looked to be older than her, but not by much. Perhaps only a year or two.

His lips remained sealed tightly, his eyes looking at everything but her.

“Well, if not your name, can you tell me what happened? Did someone do this to you?” She asked the boy.

Once again, he did not answer her. Calliope frowned slightly. She knew she would have to gain his trust enough for him to tell her what happened.

“I see you are in Hufflepuff,” she said lightly, standing up and sitting on the edge of the bed he was on. “I’m in Hufflepuff too, you know, even if I don’t currently look it. It’s a good house. You must be older than me, you look like you are. I’m a second year. Are you a third year?”

She was saying many words, but her tone of voice was so inviting, so calm and warm, that the boy nodded, agreeing with her question, confirming one thing about him.

“Do you mind if I take a look at your arm? I’m not going to do anything I just am going to look for now.” She told him, once more giving him a gentle smile.

The other Hufflepuff slowly held out his arm to her, his sleeve pushed up to show two deep cuts running vertically up his arm. It took everything for the young brunette not to wince, her lips turning downward at the sight before her.

“Did an animal do this?” She asked, thinking of nothing else that could leave two cuts like that down his arm.

The boy looked up suddenly, startled. He frantically started shaking his head, leading Calliope to believe that was exactly what had left the marks. But why would he be trying to hide it?

“N-no!” It was the first time she had heard the boy say anything, and it startled her slightly with how sudden the outburst was.

“If not a creature then what?” She asked him, sterilizing her hands so that she could hold his arm.

“I-I’m very clumsy. I fell beside the Black Lake, it was a rock.” The boy explained in a rush.

Calliope was very skeptical, but for now she would appease him and go with it.

“Can you tell me your name now, then? It’s very important that you do, to make sure you have no allergies or anything of the sort.”

“N-Newt Scamander.” The boy replied so quietly she almost did not hear him.

“Well then Newt, it looks like a quick spell and some bandages is all you need. Are you okay if I do that or would you prefer Madame Linn take care of it?”

It was a question she had to ask every student. Would they prefer Madame Linn take care of them. While she was quite capable, some of the students were more skeptical about her taking care of them, rather than the fully trained healer.

“You can,” Newt told her, looking down at the ground, his shy demeanor returning.

While Newt was always shy, he found his demeanor wasn’t helped when he found the fellow Hufflepuff to be quite cute. While he never had really had any interest in girls, nor had any friends in general, he still often found himself thinking thoughts such as these, which only ended with him becoming more flustered.

She continued talking to him, making him as confortable as possible, wanting to learn what actually happened to him. However, he never told her more than he fell near the Black Lake, so she was left to put that down in his chart.

The girl did her job quickly, taking care of Newt’s injuries and gingerly wrapping them with cloth soaked in another healing agent, just to insure the cuts did not scar.

“Well then, Newt, that should be all. You’ll need to leave the cloth on for a day, and clean your cuts well when you take it off. Understood?”

“Yes,” he replied, his voice still quiet.

“Good, now off you pop. It was nice talking to you Newt, but maybe if we do it again we have the conversation in the Great Hall, not in the Hospital Wing.” she told him, a joking smile on her face.

The boy flushed slightly at the idea of talking to her again, despite not having done much talking on his part, but he nodded all the same.

Calliope watched him go with a smile and a wave before moving on. She did hope she saw him again.

So I've never done the Magical Readathon before, but it happened to cross my tl this afternoon on twitter, and I figured, since I'm trying to get back into reading, why not? It was the perfect opportunity!

I will be attempting all of the exams, and whatever I pass will be the N.E.W.T.S. I take if I do that in August! I don’t really know what I want to choose for a career yet, both irl and for the Readathon, so I’ll just be taking the exams and seeing where I end up!
