aethersea: #lol yeah though #my dad hates the chinese government bc of all the atrocities (valid) #but I can't take it seriously when he's like 'and the chinese government is harvesting everyone's data from tiktok!' #like yeah ok they probably are #he says the government can just Tell a chinese company to hand over their data and they gotta and like. yeah ok sure I believe him #but the thing is #any american company that has my data may or may not be handing it over for free to the american government #but they're sure as shit selling it to anyone who'll buy #the highest bidder and every single bidder after that too bc you can just keep selling that data forever! #'foreign governments are spying on you' skill issue frankly I am not worth their time #I am just some rando #my own government is spying on me far more invasively #and google is spying on me so invasively it counts as porn in the matrix #and – the actual important point – foreign governments aren't going to do anything to me #the odds of that data being used against me by my own government are so much higher #so really truly from the bottom of my heart why the fuck should I care about the chinese government spying on me #that's not my problem that's the CIA's problem. let them stress about it #it is fundamentally not! my! problem!
mellueminate: #same rules as parents eh it's all abt control
the-isopodcalypse: #they're acting like china couldn't just buy my data if they wanted it lol
thoughtsformtheuniverse: #right? china has my information - big whoop. i'm out of their jurisdiction! #you know who has my information and can actually effect my quality of life? my government! any silicon valley dickhead! it's Infuriating
slimesaurian: don't forget! facial recognition software and location tracking and all sorts of military/police (see: military) tech that is used with our data to actively oppress us! it's not just the corporations that love our data, it's the enforcers of that wealth as well!
Infinitely funny whenever the media or government or some corporation tries to fearmonger to me about the Chinese government getting access to my private information.
Y'all have spent the last two decades drilling into me that I should have absolutely no expectation of privacy. No expectation of privacy from my own government, who are by far the entity most likely to use my information to really harm me. No expectation of privacy from advertisers who will do anything with that data, give it to anyone, if they think it will make them a few cents of profit. No expectation that anything I write, even in private documents that are never posted, won't be used to train machine learning models to let capital owners eliminate more workers and further consolidate their wealth and power. All that's just how it is and I have to accept it.
But apparently, unbeknownst to me, there is exactly one entity that does owe me an expectation of privacy, and it's not one that has any formal social or legal tie to me. Fascinating. I guess I have a lot to learn about privacy.

Keep Going!
Every day in Gaza is uncertain. Supposed safe zones are attacked purposefully, and seemingly systemically, with how often places with large family's are staying get attacked. entire generations of Palestinians have died and are dying in a war they could've never chosen to participate in. condemning Israel expansion, condemning Hamas extremism, condemning all the tragedy and death you see or hear about cannot be enough. But i know that when words are all you have it's hard to keep up with everything.
Which is why, when you personally cannot donate for literally any reason; spreading campaigns, talking about Palestine, asking others on behalf of someone else if they can spend a little of their time and money; can mean all the difference.
And it's people with less that have done so much more for the Palestinian people. The rich and elite showing time and time again that they do not care enough to put their luxury experiences on hold. While for the working class in all countries, time itself is money. time spent at work; time spent at work and taking care of pets or children; time spent at work and time spent at home doing even more work (example: teachers). The tax of living is always spent. And mostly ever returned in small pieces of peace and happiness. the relief or satisfaction of meeting a deadline, seeing someone smile, laughing with friends and family. All these help get back that lost time.
Helping families in Gaza, in ANY way, could NEVER be "thankless work". Because every single person who contributes has the eternal thanks from the people you're helping even just a little bit. 1 person in a sea of many is 1 person that has helped. The numbers of donations on a fundraiser aren't just numbers. they're people. It's proof of people helping people right before your eyes.
THS IS A CALL THAT YOU CANNOT LOSE HOPE. For your sake, and for Palestinians, both in Gaza and the West Bank. If you've been depressed by every set back, every tragedy, and every lost life. Let this spur you on still. Look around you at all the people on this strange website that have chosen to help. that have spread campaigns or pledged to donate later because they can't now, that can't donate but still do what they can. Look at all these people. imagine them standing before you, thousands and hundreds of people, that say they're going to try anyway. You don't have to promise you'll try your best, because that's subjective. Very few can truly know what their best is, and we keep trying anyway.

Texas Executes Baby
Republican Texas governor Greg Abbott defended today the decision to execute Mary Eldridge, a 7 month old baby, by lethal injection.
Eldridge was convicted in April under Texas’s “Defense of Women Act” which holds the fetus responsible if the mother dies of complications from her pregnancy. Many civil rights organizations have denounced the execution as unjust, but Abbott has defended the execution, stating:
“A fetus is a living human and it has the responsibilities of a living human, and if a living human kills a woman, that person must be held responsible for murder in the first degree. If we were not to execute this infant for its acts as a fetus, the sanctity of the fetus would be threatened and Pro-Choicers would have the upper hand. There is no question that Mary Eldridge is responsible for her mother’s death, and now justice has been served.”
Needless to say this defense is controversial, and the ACLU has vowed to take the State of Texas to court to prevent further infant executions. More on this story as it develops, and remember, you heard it here first on FIJMU.
