I would love to know if it's just that Tumblr interaction is down/people really have left the hell site, or if Star Wars just isn't hitting as hard as it used to. Like, is it that the fandom isn't here on Tumblr much anymore that has led to my dash being pretty empty of current Star Wars gifsets compared to what it was in the past? Is it that fandom is still here on Tumblr but are tired of Star Wars? Is it that fandom is still here but doesn't like these Star Wars projects? Is it that the audience across the board has said, nah, we're sick of this and these projects aren't going to be big ratings hits with nothing to do with Tumblr? Is it some hellish combination of all of the above that I could never hope to untangle? It's just such a marked difference from when the Obi-Wan Kenobi show came out or even when Andor came out, The Acolyte and TBB are hardly on my dash, and I'd love to know if it's just Tumblr or if it's the wider audience that's not showing up.

"See, I was dead when I woke up this morning. And I'll be dead before the day is done." -Seven Devils, Florence and the Machine
Raphael x reader (gn)
Cause how could I not write something to go with this gifset?
Tumblr media
Your blood had run hot as you’d shared passion in a devil’s den. Simmering beneath your flushed skin as your fingers traced his fiery veins.
Your blood now pumped cold, dread and fear following wherever you ran, leading him right to your every hiding place.
Your blood would run red upon the ground if he caught you.  The betrayal rotting bitter upon his tongue. Turning hope to an acrid ash that he would choke you with.
You heard your name again, spoken with the force of expelling a deadly toxin, behind you. Again, you thought to the events taken place not hours ago.
Raphael on his knees before you, defeated. The bodies of his devilkin scattered and strewn like so many crumpled and brittle leaves.  His eyes barely able to open, he made to plea for his life, no more honeyed words to try and sway you.
Your sword raised high, paused. You looked down upon the devil who had committed no trespass against you.  It was your fault, this aching sundering. Your careless blundering.
“Shit.”  You said, lowering your weapon.  You knew time was short.  Raphael would lash out, sensing weakness like a shark smells blood clouding the water.
Your companions were already jumping desperately through the portal, you saw Astarion calling for you, unable to hear beyond the steady thrumming in your ears. Your world tilted as you staggered sideways, fighting to remain conscious long enough to retrieve the health poultice from your pack.
“I won’t allow him to have you.”  You wondered if he heard you, his bright eyes met yours and you knew he understood.
You threw the poultice at him, turned and staggered for the sparking doorway back to your dimension.
Your name, snarled from within the dark ruins brought you back to the present. To the situation you’d custom made for yourself. Raphael had caught your scent, try and you might to avoid the inevitable fate.
He was powerful once more, perhaps more so than last you’d seen him. You turned, unable to run further, your feet useless as blocks of ice supporting your weight. Your fingers numb upon the cold stone column you leaned against.
A plume of orange fire lit the very back of the old temple, the bright light momentarily blinding your wide eyes. You heard heavy footsteps approaching, unhurried, purposeful and intent on your destruction.
Leathery wings stretched wide, lit scarlet by the inferno. The glimmer of eyes slowly gave way to the familiar angles and ridges of a hellish face and curving horns.
Something metallic glinted in the flickering light, sat in regal splendor upon Raphael’s head.
“No.”  You whispered in horror.  You’d given it to Gale.
“Out of touch with reality, as ever.”  Raphael’s large hand took a fistful of your hair and pulled, yanking a cry of pain from your throat. “I gave you every opportunity and you squandered it all like a petulant child.”
Your breath was ragged, the freezing air scraping through your lungs like daggers. The crown of Karsus mirrored the natural curve of Raphael’s horns, like it was tailor made just for him.
“Gale…”
“Is in pieces spread from here to Cormyr by now.”  With an insulting ease, Raphael tossed you by the hair to the ground.
The air left your lungs and you gasped in vain to regain breath, struggling like a fish out of water, trying to drag yourself away from his approach.
Raphael rolled his shoulders, the bonfire far behind continuing to blaze at his command. He circled slowly, waiting for you to regain your feet, like a cat playing with an injured and frantic mouse.
“I spared you.” You hissed in pain, clutching your side as you struggled back up.
“You doomed yourself.”  Raphael answered, the edge of his voice seeming to take physical form to cut your very soul.
His arm moved and something small clinked upon the ground, rolling to rest against your foot. You looked down, your lips twisting into a grimace as you recognized the health potion.
“How generous.”
“With you, my dear, I am lenient as ever.”  Raphael waited for you to restore yourself, his wings folding slightly, but his posture remaining tense and ready. “Now we will finish what you started.”

TEARS!?!?! THE TEARS!!!???? 😭😭😭
I have been avoiding THINKING about that episode for the past 4 days! I am a MESS! I am dying! How am I supposed to live knowing that there's a Halit out there that waited for almost FORTY YEARS to catch a glimpse of his Esra! And then he had to leave!!! Because she had to go back! I am rambling. I can't type through the tears anymore! I want to put him in my pocket and tell him it's going to be all right! 😭😭😭😭😭
On a completely unrelated note, I would pay with my soul to have an Ahmet-Lili wedding with Esra in a cute little bridesmaid dress. Halit would be the groom's father so I don't know how that mess would get sorted out 😬 I also don't know how Turkish weddings look so maybe no bridesmaids? Yes bridesmaids? Anywho, I need an Ahmet-Lili wedding yesterday.
You're really good at the gif-making! They look so, so pretty 💖💖💖 Thank you so much for feeding my endless need to consume gifs all the time. 🥰🥰
i was going to say 1979 halit owns my heart but let’s be honest, every version does. BUT!! as you said, ‘79 halit who waited for thirty years in an absolute hellish world run by a misogynist fascist terrible human being with only the hope of getting a glimpse of his esra at some point during his life… god. he could’ve moved away, he could’ve done anything else with his life. but no, he stayed, waited, and then had to let her go again with the only hope they’d be together in the past—it’s an insane concept, yet he did it.
ahmet/lili have me in tears, i swear 🥺 they were so utterly tender and sweet. it feels like ahmet, like esra, has known little love in his life, and thinking of him having a nice future with lili is genuinely something that i hope happens in the future of the show, somehow. (god how heartbreaking were all the scenes where ahmet post-gateway kept calling halit dad? 😭)
and thank you SO SO much!! 🥹🩵 i’m very happy you enjoy my gifs! if you have any requests, please don’t hesitate on letting me know which moment or scene you’d like to see in a gifset! i have some drafted already but i can always make more!! 🩵🩵

unpopular opinion but I think relegating schizophrenia to the status of a terminal illness or something and not allowing schizos to make reclamatory jokes or post pride/positivity messages because it “trivializes a serious condition” is well intentioned but ultimately leads to maintaining the current level of stigma and isolation that people on the schizo spectrum face
yes, it can be a hellish and disabling condition, but just like the autism spectrum, that’s what it is: a spectrum. erasing the thousands of schizo patients who can use the internet, socialize with others, and coherently advocate for themselves doesn’t help us feel better about ourselves or achieve greater support and freedom in society. pushing the narrative that people with schizo spectrum DXes always hide away in shame and fear and keep their diagnosis a secret only encourages people to think of us as less adult and less human.
honestly, I want to live on an internet where you can post a gifset of your fave and be like “I can just FEEL the schizophrenia radiating off of them” and have that understood as positive and a statement of empathy and identification rather than a cruel meme-based gag

thinking about this again specifically in regards to mr. melancholy and filmic history. a lot of people have made cool parallel gifsets of isttvg and lisa frankenstein, another great queer horror movie about teens (and the hellishness of suburbia) that came out this year since both feature the man in the moon (an iconic image from the 1902 silent film a trip to the moon), but where lisa frankenstein is a love letter to cinema specifically - loaded with tons and tons of references from everything to beetlejuice to bringing up baby - isttvg is a movie about television - specifically the buffy-esque sort of cheesy 90s television that most people don't take seriously. owen and maddy aren't anchoring their lives around the sopranos, you know?
so the visual choice of the man in the moon - one of the most enduring images in cinema - as the Big Bad is something i really find compelling! and a trip to the moon is threaded through the movie in different ways; the original music video for "tonight, tonight" (covered by snail mail in the film) by the smashing pumpkins was a direct homage to a trip to the moon! it's again that refusal of neatly dividing between quote-unquote "highbrow" and "lowbrow" art and i really could study this movie forever. anyway
another thing about i saw the tv glow that fascinates me is the like...movement (transgression?) across mediums in that to begin with it's a theatrical feature film about a tv show. and when you think about it, while there are lots of tv shows about tv (30 rock, showtime's episodes) and lots of movies about the movies (singin' in the rain, la la land) there isn't as much crossover between the two as you would expect - few if any tv shows about movies, even less in the realm of movies about tv.
when isttvg came out in theaters, brigette lundy-paine made an instagram post with this caption:
Tumblr media
which is a direct reference to a line their character says in the film - that the pink opaque airs on the young adult network right before they switch over to black and white movies for old people. (i'll have to double check if maddy says "movies" or "reruns" in the actual scene; i remember it as "movies" EDIT: it's reruns but my point still stands) and, for much of isttvg's runtime, it both operates in tandem with and against this notion - it's a cinematic spectacle, visually gorgeous to be sure, but the scale is very small, almost claustrophobic at times, in a way that says that the experience of watching this movie wouldn't be incredibly diminished if you played it on a boxy television in the middle of the night on basic cable (so long as you had somebody to watch it with)
but maddy's line is said with a surprising and youthful sort of disdain - the pink opaque is so different from the dumb nostalgia of their forebearers (with the same winking-at-the-camera irony with which a comic period piece notes the record-breakingly fast ten-mile-an-hour horse carriage or what have you - what they see as progress already obsolete in the eye of the modern viewer), and moreover it's in the exact medium it's meant to be viewed in. it's a tv show they're watching on tv (and in fact the impetus for owen and maddy to grow closer is owen specifically saying "i want to watch it live") - versus black and white movies, the original filmic spectacle, being thusly reduced to something smaller and lesser than they were meant to be. but of course that would never happen to our favorite Brand New television show, the pink opaque, which is super cool and is going to be relevant forever! nothing like that stuff for "old people." it's indicative of how prickly maddy is but it's one of the least sentimental sentiments of what is otherwise very much a love letter to the screen. it stands out!
(and we get even more of that with the streaming version of tpo later, but i'm getting ahead of myself here)
and it's further complicated by the fact that owen views the majority of the show via home-recorded vhs tapes, handmade gifts from maddy, forbidden things. the way you watch it matters too. the way you construct your relationship with this story. which in a way queers the viewing model too; he's literally watching the show out of order!
and now getting back into the horrendously depressing streaming scene, in which schoenbrun does the impossible and makes the phrase "soup party" upsetting, the convenience is what makes it wrong. transgression in the wrong direction. anybody can watch it. you don't even need a disc, owen/isabel says in voiceover, numbly. but instead of maddy's tapes, born out of connection/love (to a degree that neither of them even fully recognize yet), this version of non-normative/alternative access is something dictated by capitalism (it's also worth noting that the streaming scene is the only moment of overt product placement in the whole film, with the new flatscreen with the LG logo all but shoved in front of the viewer). owen/isabel flicks through the episodes lazily and languidly, landing in the middle on the mr. sprinkly episode. there is no effort involved anymore, none of the personal element present in maddy's handwritten notes ("season 2 finale: guaranteed to make you cry!"), just picking and choosing.
all this culminating in a movie about television, with a pseudo-wide release and enough buzz that it did moderately well as far as indie flicks go.
yet - inserting myself into the supposedly distant third-person analytical essay, as queer theorists are wont to do - i don't really think i would have been nearly as affected by this movie if i'd just watched it on like. netflix. if it'd had commercial breaks on late-night cable ("past curfew," as owen's parents repeatedly note) that's one thing, but the modern streaming paradigm doesn't really allow for that. seeing this movie in theaters forces you to go to the theaters. it forces you to sit with other people and view it together/separately. to walk out mid-credits and talk it through with your friend and look at each other and joke "(gasp)............we're secretly in another world where that dunkin donuts is two blocks away!" when the google maps app glitches out. you have to sit with it. you can't not sit with it. it took effort to get here, and you cannot so easily get it out of your head. it's a movie about tv. the medium doesn't fit like a glove. it barely fits at all. and you are left feeling like it's been much longer than a hundred minutes.
(i'd love to see if a24 has fun with merchandising once it gets a home release - if they sell a novelty vhs tape or what)
i think a lot of that is really something to look at. much like the film itself i do not have a conclusion to this essay.
