New #review #TheDictionaryofLostWords by #PipWilliams For some reason, it took me such a long time to really get into this book. I initially started it back in August but didn’t make it that far, moved to some other books, then came back to it. But I’m glad I did. This book had me smiling and crying, with some massive sighs of disgust (usually at a certain gender’s antiquated views) in between. Although the ending left a lot to be desired for this reader… However, I appreciate the author’s skillful interweaving of factual historical events with the mostly fictional lives of the books characters. **POTENTIAL SPOILERS AHEAD** This story follows the unconventional life of Esme, the daughter of one of the editors in the Scriptorium, a ramshackle building that was home to much of the original edition of the Oxford English Dictionary. In the beginning, she spends a lot of her life in this building, absorbing life lessons from the men around her, who are working to compile a comprehensive dictionary. The only problem… it’s not comprehensive. Whether by design, carelessness, or some other reason, words are lost. And it is Esme who finds them… As she grows, she moves out from under the table and behind her own desk, rising in the ranks because she’s a woman with a britan and the men around her are smart enough to recognize her talent. But she also moves out of the safety of the Scriptorium and into the midst of love affairs, an accidental pregnancy and subsequent loss of that child through adoption, the unrest of the early days of the Suffragette movement, and the pain and anguish of being on the home front during WWI. The Dictionary of Lost Words spans decades of words, lives, and ultimately, love.
