My Bloody Valentine - Loveless Yes I am finally joining the ranks of every other vinyl Instagram page and posting my copy of the new Loveless reissue. But instead of going on at depth about various analog technologies and trying to describe it without using the word “warmth” I’m going to get sentimental. I was gifted this copy by my amazing girlfriend. It was supposed to come on Valentines Day but international shipping made it miss not only Valentines Day, but also International Women’s Day which constitute 2/365 days on which my girlfriend deserves to be praised. MBV was one of the first bands we bonded over so they’ll always hold a special place for me. Penguin Cafe Orchestra - Broadcasting From Home Here’s a nice little find I picked up for a few bucks a couple months back. When I found this album in the bins the extent of my Penguin Cafe Orchestra knowledge was that they released an album on Eno’s Obscure label and that it wasn’t this album. I decided to check the credits to see if Eno was involved, and he wasn’t but I did notice Liner Notes favourite, Ryuichi Sakamoto co-wrote the track Heartwind so I decided to pick it up. Turns out I was already familiar with the song Music for a Found Harmonium because a friend of mine edited it into a video I made in high school when I campaigned for Student Council Co-President. Anyway, this is a really nice instrumental album of great and simple ideas fleshed out on a bunch of instruments with immaculate production. I’ll probably be picking up more PCO as I come across it. I am still looking for the album they released on Obscure so I can complete my collection of Obscure albums of which I currently have 1. Car Seat Headrest - Twin Fantasy Car Seat Headrest is back in more than one sense of the word with Twin Fantasy (again). For those who may not know this album was originally released in 2011 and has since been re-recorded and reimagined for this new release. I’ve seen a lot of skepticism surrounding CSR on twitter and stuff, some people in the world of bandcamp seem to hold a crab-bucket type resentment over his popularity. Others hold a resentment for his recycling of old material which is taken to a new level here. Personally I don’t get many of these criticisms, especially in the age of streaming and digital being the new primary medium. Art and music are plastic and people seem uncomfortable letting go of old systems and structures which were intrinsically tied to their physical medium. I think this type of reinventing is refreshing, why should an artist be bound to a release as soon as it’s released? Why can’t they revisit it and update it? Let’s be honest, this goes beyond a standard reissue and in a way is a rather unique project as few artists go back and tamper with old material, I don’t see this as an attempt to monetize on old recordings (why not do a standard reissue f an already popular album?) but an artist who doesn’t see their own work as sacred and tampers with it continuously (some of these songs having already been re-recorded on Teens of Style). Anyway maybe I’ll sit down and write a more cohesive set of thoughts on this but for now I’m just enjoying getting a nice pressing of an album I’ve come to appreciate in a new way. I honestly think this version is a great improvement and will probably still try to get the 2011 version on RSD. Ought - Room Inside The World It doesn’t take long following this page to realize what a big fan I am of Ought. So of course I had to pick up their new album on purple vinyl. If I’m not mistaken the Purple version is limited to the Canadian distributor Royal Mountain, which for once makes me feel like there’s some benefits to collecting records up here. Although the white version does look nice as well. As for the actual music, it’s hard to believe but Ought continues their streak of near perfect records. With each record they’ve upped their playing, upped their production and upped their song writing. This album is a bit more of a departure in sound compared to the more live post-punk albums that came before. It also marks their first album for Merge Records (having left one of my favourite labels of all time Constellation, but let’s not hold that against them for now). This album has a bit less urgency, and finds a band mid-stride. Although being more relaxed does not take away from a marked improvement in playing and signing abilities. Desire has been on fairly regular rotation for me and it may just be my new favourite Ought song. The inclusion of Choir Choir Choir and a touch of saxophone from James Goddard really brings it all home. Bahamas - Pink Strat Woke up this morning and listened to the brand new Bahamas album, Earthtones, and decided to go back to his first album. I can’t quite remember how I discovered Bahamas but I can’t help that either me or someone I know found him on MySpace. Of course, before this album he could be seen playing guitar for Feist (who is featured on this record) on her Reminder tour. This particular copy was gifted to me by the great @thetaoofmoults who saw Bahamas at a gig I believe at the Carleton here in Halifax. I was still 18 so I couldn’t go but Mike got it signed for me and gave it to me for Xmas. Animal Collective - Merriweather Post Pavilion This album recently turned nine years old, forcing us all to reckon with the fact that we’re almost two decades into the millennium. While this isn’t in my favourite Animal Collective releases, I would say it’s one of the most definitive records of the 00s and would ultimately mark a pivot into the ‘10’s that saw a new found obsession with synths and an abandonment of the idea that The Strokes or Arctic Monkeys signalled a meaning return of Rock n Roll. It took me a long time to take to this album and since it was my introduction to AnCo I largely ignored them until I heard Feels and Sung Tongs. One thing I’ve noticed when talking to people (mostly my age) about this album is that many people really came to love this record driving around in high school playing it on shitty car speakers and generally engaging in whatever high school nonesense. That’s how I first heard it but for me I didn’t really click with it until I heard it on a decent set of speakers.
