There is currently not a set date for our next opening, but I have so much thanks to give for the over 100 members we earned from our last one! To those of you waiting to hop in, I promise there is discussions being had. The interest in SOTC has been overwhelmingly flattering, lots of love from the staff team to all of you!

My brain also draws funny arbitrary lines in terms of what kind of AU shenanigans it will accept in my world states and what it rejects--like, generally I don't cross the streams of my world states, so even though Ilana Tabris and Lorien Lavellan would probably hit it off, they're never going to meet because they exist in different universes. But apparently I can also have a world state where Eleanor Trevelyan dies at the Conclave and her brother Theo becomes the Inquisitor instead, or where Lorien's bff Dannae gets sent instead and becomes Inquisitor instead of her. Why does one of these things work for me but not the other? Hey, don't ask me, I just work here. :P

This just in Theo Tabris is an ass who enjoys freaking out her human companions with her glowy elf eyes at least twice a week. Alistair woke up once to her watching him sleep and almost died.

Planning out the new worldstate here…

My best-loved worldstate is Surana->mage!Hawke->mage!Lavellan.

I prefer mages for both gameplay and story reasons. For race, I love the elves, both city and dalish. In terms of romance, I enjoy mages with non-mages, and romance crossing race lines. (Honorary shout-out to the raw, started-from-the-bottom storylines of Brosca and Tabris. I love them so much!)

But… I’m gonna keep this new play-through boring. All human ladies.

Since this is my lore refresh play-through, I’m sticking with humans, as the narrative seems to favor them at times. Particularly in the case of Cousland and how they fit in with the nobility of Ferelden and the sub-plot with Arl Howe. So, yeah. Gonna give up playing a mage warden. Also, with a Trevelyan, I won’t feel as compelled to drink from the well of sorrows as I was with Lavellan. (How dare Morrigan say she was the better option when a Dalish elf is literally standing right there) Even with these deviations, I’m sure I’ll enjoy the play-throughs. They’re all just gratuitous self-inserts and I’m still gonna make all of my favorite choices. I’m a creature of habit.

Human she/theys with “A” names. I’ll call it my Andrastian worldstate lol. …Although all of them were raised in the Chantry faith, they’re all different levels of non-belief now. I can’t bring myself to play a Chantry lover. Yikes.

Amalthea is one of the names used by Divines and I’m headcanoning that it’s an old Cousland family name, including a use by Teyrna Elethea Cousland for one of her daughters. Also headcanoning that it was Divine Amalthea I who wrote a favorite hymn of Cousland’s mother, Eleanor. However, she(/they) prefers to go by just Theo.

Ayesleigh is, of course, the name of a city. One that was the final battleground of the Fourth Blight. In my headcanon, Leandra chose this name for her first child after Malcolm’s work with the Wardens. He never revealed to his wife what the Wardens had forced him to do, but she was aware that they were instrumental in her release from her father’s house. Also, that makes the Hawke siblings start with A, B, and C in order. Leandra strikes me as the kind of mom to do that.

Augusta, in meta was originally going to be the name for Andraste, which is why one of the months in the Thedosian year is August. I’m headcanoning that Augusta was the name of an early and vocal proponent of the Andrastian faith who lived in the hundred-some years after Andraste’s death and before Emperor Drakon established the Orlesian chantry. The Trevelyan family are very pious and many of their traditional family names I’m sure are taken from ancient Chantry faithful. My Augusta is not super fond of her name, especially since her brother calls her Gussie to get a rise out of her. They often just go by August and is actually a bit relieved when folks start calling them The Herald/Inquisitor.

Artemisia Gentileschi is a favored artist of mine and the name sounds like it could be possibly from Tevinter or Antiva. For now, it’s a placeholder. We’ll see if it changes as more info come out about the DA4 protag.

…I really hope the DA4 human option isn’t a noble again.

“Theodora…” Leliana lifted a shaking hand that Theo Tabris impatiently shoved aside.

“No! No, shut up! I can do this!”

The last of their potions had been smashed in the same attack that had left Theo’s love crumpled on the ground like a puppet whose strings had been cut; the bottle’s vibrant crimson contents had splashed across the same rocks that were now coated in the darker, almost black blood that dropped from the saturated bandages Althea spat curses at now. It wasn't working. The bandages weren't enough, but there were no potions left.

No healing kits.

No hope.

Tremors wracked Theo’s slim frame as she bent nearly in half over Leliana. “Don’t,” she begged in a voice that was barely more than a rasp. She could feel the others drawing closer and could hear them talking over each other in a murmur that she didn't pay the slightest amount of attention to. “Don’t. Not yet. I can't lose you, too.”

Leliana’s lips moved almost soundlessly, but Theo was bent close enough that she could hear them, anyway. She almost wished she couldn’t. “Silly. You aren’t losing me. I'm not going anywhere. I'm just…” Leliana drew in a slow, unsteady breath and eased it out a laugh that drifted. “I'm just going away for a little while.”

Theo was panting through her nose as her mouth drew down, quick, greedy gulps for air that she refused to allow to turn into sobs. “You can't, I'm not ready. We were supposed to have decades, remember? Go shoe shopping in Halamshiral, visit my mother together. You promised.”

“I'm sorry,” Leliana laughed again. It was soft and wet as the drops that splashed down on Leliana’s broken chest. “I think I lied. Maybe…” Leliana drew in another breath, and let it out. Drew in another, and smiled up at Theo. “Maybe you can try again. I think…” She let out the next breath as her lashes fluttered, and Theo let out an agonized cry.

“I don’t want to try again! It's you, it was always meant to be you!” Theo lifted her head and looked wildly at Alistair and Oghren. “Get the- get the mages, from the camp! Get Morrigan, maybe she can-”

“Theo, I don’t think-” Alistair started, reaching hesitantly for her.

Theo jerked away from him. “I didn't tell you to think! I told you to get them! We don’t have much time!”

Oghren stepped closer on Leliana’s other side, and dropped to meet Theo’s gaze. “Stop.” It was all he said, but it made Theo come to a shuddering halt. Her mouth snapped closed as Oghren directed her gaze downward with a tilt of his head, to find that Leliana’s chest wasn't moving. “This isn't the time. She's gone,” he said. His voice was even tougher than usual, but he clearly was making an attempt to gentle it as he added, “Say your goodbyes, warden. She can take them with her to that Maker of yours.”

Theo stared until Leliana’s still and unmoving smile blurred and doubled in front of her burning eyes. “You promised…”

A devastating betrayal and an arcane ritual leave Castiel fighting for his life...his human life. When his grace is brutally torn out of his body and he's left to die on earth the only thing the Winchesters can do is try to pick up the pieces.

(I'm just doing one story for the entire month, so please enjoy the thirty-one chapter beginning of the flare 'verse.)

(I admit, I went with a combination of traditional angel names, Old Testament prophets, and angels from Neon Genesis Evangelion here, so I don't think any of them are canon.)

Chapter Two: Talking is Overrated

Malachi’s hand twisted in the chains that wrapped around Castiel’s chest and he dragged the bound angel across the rough sand toward the small parking lot. “I remember all of their names, you know,” he commented after a few seconds of silence. “Bardiel. Jotham. Sachar. Camiel. Theo.”

His face twisted when he said the last name, and he spun around with a feral light in his eyes. “Can you still feel him, Castiel? Is he still in there somewhere, just another victim you left behind?”

Thanks to the duct tape gagging him Castiel couldn’t reply, even if he’d known what to say. He could still remember Theo’s grace burning within him, like swallowing a nest of fire ants. It hadn’t wanted to be used by another angel and had torn at him from the inside even as he tried to channel it to sustain his failing vessel. What had seemed a desperate bid for freedom at the time had turned into a curse.

He longed to go back and try a different path. Maybe he could have convinced Theo just to heal him and help him escape, maybe there would have been others among Malachi’s ranks that would have rather fled than fight.

Maybe words would never have been enough.

Malachi seemed unsatisfied with Castiel’s lack of reaction and aimed a bruising kick at his side. “How many more?” he snarled. “How many more of our brothers and sisters did you consume just to keep yourself alive? Did they beg for mercy?” He seized the chains around Castiel’s chest with both hands and hauled up from the ground to slam him back down, hard enough that Castiel felt the skin on the back of his head split

Castiel tried to shake his head—there had been Adina, but Crowley had killed her—but Malachi just snarled and backhanded him hard enough to snap his head around to the side.

“That’s enough,” Naomi ordered sharply. “I told you to put him away. There will be plenty of time for this after the ritual, but we need to get away from the gate first.”

The other angel lowered his head but glowered at Naomi through the dark hair hanging around his face. “Fine,” he spat and bent down to grab the chains again but stopped long enough to press two fingers to Castiel’s forehead. “I never forgot any of them. Did you?”

Images flooded Castiel’s mind, so sharp and brutal that he barely noticed the pain as his injured head brushed against the ground when Malachi began to drag him again.

Bodies. The silhouettes of wings. The blood-drenched halls of Malachi’s stronghold where Castiel had been forced to fight his way out after killing Theo.

And for every body a name. A thousand memories. The graceful beauty of an angel who had died by his hand, forced to choose sides in a war he had unwittingly started. Forms and faces and colors danced through his mind as he relieved Malachi’s memories of the angels under his command. Bardiel: all long, fluttering shapes and pointed eyes, his wingprints staining the wall above where his body had fallen. Camiel: broad, scarred wings that had once lead armies now nothing more than ash and blood and a lock of gray hair. Sachar. Jotham. Tabris. Raziel. Shamsiel. Azariah. Hilkiah. Puiral. Onias.

Castiel was still screaming through the gag, tears streaming down the sides of his face, when Malachi lifted him into the trunk of a small sedan and shut the lid, leaving him in darkness.

[Character Study] Nagisa Kaworu ở bản anime Neon Genesis Evangelion - 1/3

I - KAWORU CÓ THẬT SỰ HOÀN HẢO?

Nagisa Kaworu, Đứa trẻ thứ năm. Tabris, Angel thứ 17. Adam, Sứ giả cuối cùng. Xuất hiện với phong thái điềm tĩnh và sự thoải mái, dễ chịu trong từng lời nói cử chỉ nhưng cũng không kém phần bí ẩn, Kaworu quả thật đã đem lại cho khán giả những bối rối xen lẫn cảm giác nhẹ nhõm hiếm hoi giữa nhịp phim dồn dập với những đứa trẻ đầy tổn thương tâm lý, những người lớn dần bị dồn đến đường cùng bế tắc. Để rồi khi sự thật tiết lộ, chúng ta thấy đau lòng, nhưng cũng không ngạc nhiên lắm, Kaworu quá hoàn hảo để có thể là một đứa trẻ bình thường bất kỳ. Nhưng có thật là vậy không? Phải chăng bi kịch về danh tính Angel chỉ nằm ở tình tiết Kaworu phải chết và không thể ở bên cứu rỗi Shinji nữa, hay nó còn ẩn sâu trong những suy nghĩ của người khác lẫn của chính Kaworu về sự tồn tại của một Angel mang hình dáng con người?

Sự điềm tĩnh đến từ những hiểu biết về bản thân, đằng sau bức màn đó là nỗi khiếp sợ sự tồn tại của chính mình  và lý do Kaworu xem cái chết là tự do tuyệt đối.

Trước tiên hãy nói về Kaworu trong bản nháp, hay được gọi là hai phiên bản "trầm cảm" hơn của Kaworu. Thực chất, Kaworu ở các bản nháp vẫn giữ được vẻ thoải mái, dễ chịu. Cậu vẫn biết đùa, vẫn có thể trò chuyện vui vẻ với Shinji. Điểm khác biệt với anime, và cũng là điểm khiến chúng ta thấy Kaworu nháp không được "hoàn hảo" bằng anime, nằm ở sự hoảng loạn khi cậu biết được danh tính của mình. Trong ở một chi tiết ở bản nháp 1, khi nhìn thấy Adam, Kaworu không hề nhận ra đó là gì mà phải thông qua Rei gọi tên sinh vật ấy thì mới biết được. Dường như cậu còn không biết Adam trông như thế nào nữa chứ đừng nói đến chuyện phân biệt được Adam và Lilith như trên anime. Hướng đến Adam chỉ là hành động vô thức dựa trên bản năng. Và khi bản năng Angel bên trong Kaworu mạnh hơn, cậu đã phải hối thúc Shinji tiêu diệt cậu trước khi không còn làm chủ được mình.

Bản năng và hành động vô thức là nguyên nhân của trạng thái hoảng loạn. Muốn kiểm soát được bản năng của Angel và tránh các hành động vô thức, trước hết cậu cần phải hiểu rõ bản thân sinh ra để làm gì. Kaworu nháp không hoàn toàn ý thức được mình là ai, còn trong anime thì có. Kaworu trông càng điềm tĩnh đến đâu, thì cũng càng am hiểu bản thân sâu rộng đến đấy. Tuy nhiên, sự điềm tĩnh không đồng nghĩa với việc cậu tự cho rằng Angel thượng đẳng hơn con người. Đó chỉ là, vì cậu không thể thay đổi được gì về việc cơ thể và linh hồn của mình là gì nên dù biết hết mọi chuyện cũng lặng lẽ chấp nhận, không vùng vẫy chống lại khi còn sống. Đây là nền tảng để cậu cho rằng sự sống và cái chết cũng như nhau, rằng cái chết là cách duy nhất cự tuyệt lại số mệnh ấy.

Để hiểu được Kaworu biết rõ bản thân là chuyện kinh khủng đến mức nào mà có thể sinh ra cách nghĩ tiêu cực như vậy, mình sẽ phân tích thông qua một trong những nhận xét của Shinji về Kaworu khi trò chuyện cùng Misato ở cuối tập 24:

"Cậu ấy giống em. Và Ayanami."

Kaworu vừa giống vừa khác với Rei. Về mặt sinh lý là đều chứa linh hồn của FAR, Adam và Lilith trong thể xác con người, và việc "lấy hình dáng của Lilin để sinh sống trên hành tinh này" này đã khiến cả hai gặp khó khăn trong khi hiểu bản thân mình, làm nảy sinh những cảm xúc và ý nghĩ tiêu cực. Đối với Rei, đó là sự chơi vơi, lạc lõng, không có nơi thuộc về vì không hình dung ra được bản thân là ai. Chúng thể hiện rõ nhất trong bài thơ đầu tập 14. Trích đoạn:

"Bầu trời. Bầu trời màu đỏ. Màu đỏ. Mình ghét màu đỏ."

Đây lần thứ hai Rei nhắc đến bầu trời. Lần đầu, bầu trời màu xanh và theo sau là "Những gì mắt thấy. Những gì mắt không thấy." Ở Rei thứ có màu đỏ và liên hệ với thứ vừa thấy vừa không thấy là đôi mắt. Đôi mắt là cửa sổ tâm hồn nên đây chính là sự thù ghét của Rei dành cho linh hồn Lilith, cái thứ xa lạ tồn tại trong cơ thể mình.

Kaworu chứa linh hồn của Adam, đôi mắt của Kaworu cũng màu đỏ. Và tương tự, cảm xúc của Kaworu đối với chính mình cũng tiêu cực như vậy, nhưng vì nguyên do khác với Rei nên nó nghiêng về sợ hãi hơn chứ không hẳn là ghét. Rei không biết và đặt ra những câu hỏi không lời giải, mãi cảm thấy xa lạ với một phần linh hồn mình nên đâm ra ghét bỏ. Trái ngược với Rei, Kaworu biết mình là cái gì, mình tồn tại là vì mục đích gì. Nhưng vì biết nên cậu mới sợ hãi. Dù biết ở mức độ nào, mơ hồ hay rõ ràng, cũng đều khiến Kaworu sợ hãi. Trong bản nháp, nỗi sợ hãi ấy thể hiện ra bằng những vết sẹo trên cổ tay. Kaworu từng cố tự tử hay ít nhất là hủy hoại bản thân trong quá khứ, vì cậu mơ hồ hiểu ra mình sống là điều khủng khiếp như thế nào, nên muốn kết thúc sự tồn tại của chính mình. Ở bản nháp 1, cậu muốn chết. Chết bất cứ lúc nào, chết bất cứ nơi đâu, nên vào những phút cuối mới nói rằng "Thà rằng hôm đó chìm xuống biển cùng cậu đã tốt hơn rồi" với Shinji, vì cậu cho rằng đó là hạnh phúc khi được chết với người mình yêu. Kaworu trong anime thì đã hiểu tường tận, nên cậu biết mình không thể chết theo cách đó được. Dù cho không còn những vết sẹo nhưng sự thật là Kaworu sinh ra và lớn lên ở Seele vẫn không thay đổi, nên nỗi sợ bản thân cũng không biến mất. Thật không muốn tưởng tượng ra 15 năm đó cuộc sống của Kaworu như thế nào, Seele đã nuôi dạy cậu ra sao. Các bạn nhớ căn phòng tăm tối và vương vãi thuốc men của Rei và hồ nước chứa những nhân bản Rei với ánh mắt vô hồn chứ? Môi trường sống của Kaworu có lẽ cũng như vậy. Cậu biết hết tại sao mình lại sống như thế, tại sao có những "mình" như thế. Biết mình là Angel cuối cùng, biết mình mang trong mình linh hồn Adam. Quyết định của cậu sẽ đem đến diệt vong cho một trong hai sự sống xuất hiện trên Trái Đất. Nếu hợp nhất với Adam (thể xác), con người sẽ diệt vong. Nếu không, Angel sẽ diệt vong. Nếu hợp nhất với Lilith, mọi sự sống sẽ quay về trạng thái ban đầu. Biết mình có thể bị thay thế. Những "mình" trong bồn chứa là Dummy Plug cho Mass Production Eva, là kế hoạch dự phòng để tiến hành Dự án Hoàn thiện Con người của Seele. Chúng còn là một trong những nỗi kinh hoàng của End of Evangelion.

Khác với những gì cậu thể hiện ra ngoài ở trong anime, tâm lý của Kaworu không được thoải mái như lời nói và hành động của cậu. Lúc nào cậu cũng mang trong mình nỗi sợ hãi đó, nhưng chúng không xuất hiện trực tiếp ra ngoài trên những vết sẹo nữa mà thể hiện thông qua gánh nặng lựa chọn tương lai sống còn dành cho Angel hay loài người. Ở bản nháp, hành động đi tìm Adam nhiều phần đúng là bản năng đơn thuần, còn trên anime, với một Kaworu biết nhiều hiểu nhiều thì không thể cứ đổ lỗi cho bản năng được. Kaworu ý thức được mình đang làm gì và trách nhiệm với danh tính của mình đã buộc cậu phải đưa ra quyết định tiêu diệt một trong hai giống loài. Đối với bất kỳ ai, lựa chọn giữa hai con đường diệt chủng này đã là khó khăn không tưởng, huống hồ gì đối với một thiếu niên 15 tuổi. Seele không hề quan tâm đến việc này mà chỉ biết là lừa được Kaworu xuống tìm Adam (thực chất là Lilith) để thực hiện kế hoạch. Tồn tại để phục vụ mục đích của người khác và nỗi thống khổ khi phải lựa chọn, nhìn từ góc độ này, Kaworu cũng chẳng khác Shinji là bao.

2. "Cậu ấy giống em."

Anno đã từng trả lời phỏng vấn trong tạp chí JUNE 8/1996 như sau:

Phóng viên: Nhưng chẳng phải cái tên Nagisa Kaworu (hay Kaoru) cũng hợp làm tên con gái sao? Anno: Nhưng cậu ấy là con trai. Không có nữ tính gì ở đây hết, vì hai đứa với nhau giống như là Shinji với một Shinji nữa. Người xuất hiện trước mặt Shinji là một bản thân lý tưởng của cậu, nên không là con gái được.

Lý do mà Kaworu trông gần như là hoàn hảo ở bên ngoài chính là vì cậu là hình mẫu lý tưởng của Shinji, là người mà Shinji sẵn sàng đón nhận vào cuộc đời mình nhất. Cậu xuất hiện như thế là dụng ý của đạo diễn, nuông chiều tâm lý không muốn thay đổi bản thân và trốn chạy của Shinji để rồi giáng một đòn thật đau. Không những mang danh tính thật là Angel, Kaworu còn mang suy nghĩ cái chết và sự sống không có gì khác biệt, một suy nghĩ tiêu cực. Sự phản bội lý tưởng mà Shinji đặt ra cho Kaworu khiến cậu bối rối và phẫn nộ: “Tớ chẳng hiểu cậu đang nói gì cả.” Tuy nhiên, sau những chuyện như vậy, Shinji không vì thế mà quay lưng lại với Kaworu, chứng tỏ những tiếp xúc trước đó giữa hai đứa có ý nghĩa. Trong mối quan hệ giữa Kaworu và Shinji có cả đóng góp của những nét tiêu cực, sự lý tưởng hóa đến từ Shinji và vẻ điềm tĩnh đạt được khi hiểu rõ sự tồn tại đáng sợ của bản thân đến từ Kaworu, chúng mở ra một cái nhìn sâu sắc hơn về cả hai. Shinji đã nhận ra về mặt tâm lý Kaworu có thể không phải là một người hoàn toàn hoàn hảo, nhưng cậu có thể chấp nhận một Kaworu như thế.

Khi bỏ hết những áp đặt, lý tưởng hóa lên người đối diện đi, ở Kaworu vẫn còn có một đặc điểm mà Shinji chưa có: ý chí tự do. Mình đã dẫn vào mục 2 bằng cách nêu ra sự giống nhau trong cuộc sống phụ thuộc vào yêu cầu của người khác của hai đứa, thì đây là sự khác biệt. Shinji chỉ làm những gì mà mọi người bảo, trở thành con người mà mọi người kỳ vọng, nếu không ai bảo cậu sẽ không làm. Còn Kaworu nhờ có ý chí tự do, nên mới có thể tự làm những thứ không có sẵn trong kế hoạch của Seele là tìm hiểu bản chất loài người. Tự do của Kaworu chính là gặp gỡ và kết bạn, đem lòng yêu mến Shinji và đỉnh điểm của nó là "Tớ có lẽ được sinh ra để gặp cậu", thay đổi mục đích tồn tại của mình từ phục vụ kế hoạch của Seele thành tồn tại vì một người mình yêu mến và cuối cùng là lựa chọn cái chết để chối bỏ hoàn toàn mục đích tồn tại ban đầu, thứ đã khiến Kaworu khiếp sợ bản thân mình. Câu thoại cuối của Kaworu: "Gặp được cậu tớ rất vui" đã khẳng định tầm quan trọng của việc gặp gỡ Shinji đối với tâm lý Kaworu. Tình cảm và ảnh hưởng của cả hai lên nhau là song phương, và tình cảm hình thành trong một khoảng thời gian ngắn ngủi này đã đóng vai trò quan trọng đối với sự hoàn thiện phát triển của cả hai về sau.

Trước khi có thể nói về cái vai trò quan trọng ấy của Kaworu, mình muốn bàn về cách NGE đã xây dựng nên nhân vật này, đúng hơn là bàn kỹ một đặc điểm cụ thể rồi khái quát nên tổng quan. Vẻ hoàn hảo không nói lên con người Kaworu giấu kín bên trong, đúng vậy, nhưng không thể chối cãi rằng nó là một phần của nhân vật, và một trong những yếu tố góp phần tạo nên phong thái điềm đạm thuộc về sự hoàn hảo đó là lối nói chuyện của Kaworu. Đây là cách mà Kaworu đã có thể khiến Shinji mở lòng mà mình sẽ thử giải mã thông qua một số cảnh phim ở bài tiếp theo.
