"Psycho-Pass": A Journey into a Dystopian Future
Hey everyone! 🌟
"Psycho-Pass" is an anime series set in a dystopian future where society is overseen by the Sybil System. The Sybil System is an advanced bio-mechanical network that constantly monitors the mental states of citizens. It assigns a "Psycho-Pass" score, which measures individuals' propensity for criminal behavior. If a person's score goes above a certain level, they are considered "latent criminals," and the Sybil System enforces various measures against them, even if they haven't actually committed a crime.
The story follows Akane Tsunemori, a new Inspector in the Public Safety Bureau's Criminal Investigation Division. As she progresses through her role, she faces tough choices and questions about right and wrong as she deals with the strict and sometimes harsh justice system. She's joined by veteran Inspector Shinya Kogami, who's got his own complicated history with the Sybil System. Together, they take on complex cases and start to peel back the layers of the system that affects everyone's lives.
The Social Commentary of Psycho-Pass
Psycho-Pass is a show that uses analysis to explore a surveillance society. It has a lot of themes that are relevant to our world today. One of the main messages is that we should be careful when trusting technology and algorithmic decisions. The government in the show says that the Sybil System is always right, but it makes us think about whether it is right to use justice before we know all the facts and whether it is okay to take away people's freedom.
This idea is similar to what's happening today with the use of big data and AI in law enforcement and other areas of government. The show makes viewers think about whether it's okay to give up privacy for security and whether it's fair to judge someone based on potential crimes instead of actual ones.
The character Akane Tsunemori is like a moral compass, always questioning the system and trying to understand justice better. Her journey from naivete to principle reflects the viewer's experience navigating the ethical challenges posed by the Sybil System. Kogami, on the other hand, represents the struggle against an oppressive system, constantly questioning his own role and the righteousness of the system he once upheld.
"Psycho-Pass" also looks at how people's minds work and whether people have free will. The show puts people into categories based on their mental state. This makes people's futures seem predetermined. It makes you think about what makes a person who they are, if people can change, and whether they have any control over their own lives.
The show's use of the Dominator, a weapon that uses an individual's Psycho-Pass score to determine the level of force, highlights the dehumanizing effect of such a system. It also shows the dangers of removing human judgment from important decisions, portraying a world where life and death decisions are made by algorithms.
The show's complex story and well-developed characters encourage viewers to think about the balance between safety and freedom, the role of technology in society, and what justice really is.It reminds us that there's a risk of a dystopian future if we don't carefully balance security and freedom.
In short, "Psycho-Pass" is an exciting anime with a deep message about today's society. It makes us think about the good and bad of technology and how we can control our world.

Psycho-Pass: Can Justice Exist in a Pre-Determined World?
**Trigger Warning: This analysis discusses themes of violence, crime, psychological manipulation, and ethical dilemmas that may be disturbing to some readers.**
Written by Gen Urobuchi, Makoto Fukami, and Aya Takaha, Psycho-Pass aired on Fuji TV from October 2012 to March 2013. This gripping thriller explores themes of free will, justice, and more which resonates with the concerns of Japan as well as worldwide . The series follows Akane Tsunemori, a rookie inspector with the Public Safety Bureau as she navigates the Sibyl System, an AI driven being that determines a person’s likelihood of committing a crime.
Akane and her initial idealism is challenged immediately by the Sibyl System and its flaws. Her encounters with the Enforcers, especially Shinya Kogami, force her to face the ethical implications of judging individuals based on biased data. Psycho-Pass beautifully unveils the limitations of the Sibyl System which exposes loopholes and it also raises questions about identity in a world where reliance on algorithmic judgement is increasing rapidly. This reflects real-world worries about bias in areas like criminal justice where objective systems can make existing inequalities even worse. Japan, like many nations, also faces data privacy challenges and AI use in decision making, making the themes in Psycho-Pass that much more relevant.
When Akane and her team face off against Makishima Shogo, his ideological battle with kogami leads to a revelation that shakes Akane and her beliefs down to her core: The Sibyl system is not unbiased at all but instead, its a collective of criminal minds who were said to be too valuable to be eliminated. This forces Akane to face the reality that justice is not as black and white as she thought. This resonates with discussions about the potential for corruption amongst those in power. Psycho-Pass also touches on the growing distrust in various institutions and the feeling that those in power are not genuinely acting in the people's best interest.

As society threatens to crumble into disarray, Kogami and his search for Makishima becomes more personal which pushes him to the brink of rogue justice. Akane is in the rough position of upholding the law while also trying to help Kogami from slipping into revenge driven violence. This conflict of ideology becomes one of the series most gripping arcs which makes you ask the question: Is true justice achievable when personal emotions get involved? This is a struggle faced by law enforcement and Psycho-Pass reflects it. With Japan’s emphasis on harmony, this also touches on the complexities of individualism and the possibility of marginalized groups seeking justice in their own way.
Psycho-Pass's exploration of a society willing to sacrifice individual liberties for perceived security is a cautionary tale that resonates all over the world. The series prompts viewers to consider the trade-offs inherent in a world increasingly reliant on technology and data, raising crucial questions about privacy, free will, and the very definition of justice. It’s a chilling reminder that even the most well developed systems can be corrupted and that the pursuit of order can sometimes come at the cost of genuine morality.
Have you watched Psycho-Pass or read the manga? What are your thoughts on the Sibyl System? Do you think something like this could become a reality? Share your thoughts in the comments!
CherryBlossomCinephile Rating:
Animation: 8.5/10; The animation quality features detailed cityscapes, fluid movement and fantastic design. Production IG does a terrific job at offering a world that you could get lost in. While there are a few slips in quality, its excellent overall.
Sound: 10/10; The soundtrack is incredible! Like Eden of the East, the opening theme of Psycho-Pass drew me in and I just couldn’t skip them. The opening theme song is called “Abnormalize” by Ling Tosite Sigure which seems very fitting given the subject matter. Throughout the first season, Psycho-Pass had two closing themes. “The Monster with No Name” by Egoist and “All Alone With You” by Egoist.
Writing: 9/10; Gen Urobuchi’s writing makes you think, blending philosophical discussion with a high stakes narrative. Psycho-Pass is an intellectually engaging anime that makes you think and may even question the world around you. With well developed characters and a fantastic plot, this anime will keep you hooked wanting more.
Overall Rating: 9.1/10; If you’re a fan of cyberpunk, psychological thriller, or thought provoking narratives, this is an anime for you!

French initiative for responsible AI leaders - AI News
ESSEC Business School and Accenture have announced the launch of a new initiative, ‘AI for Responsible Leadership,’ which marks the 10th anniversary of the establishment of the role of Chair at ESSEC, titled the ESSEC Accenture Strategic Business Analytics Chair.
The initiative aims to encourage the use of artificial intelligence by leaders in ways that are responsible and ethical, and that lead to high levels of professional performance. It aims to provide current and future leaders with the skills they require when faced with challenges in the future; economic, environmental, or social.
Several organisations support the initiative, including institutions, businesses, and specialised groups, including ESSEC Metalab for Data, Technology & Society, and Accenture Research.
Executive Director of the ESSEC Metalab, Abdelmounaim Derraz, spoke of the collaboration, saying, “Technical subjects are continuing to shake up business schools, and AI has opened up opportunities for collaboration between partner companies, researchers, and other members of the ecosystem (students, think tanks, associations, [and] public service).”
ESSEC and Accenture aim to integrate perspectives from multiple fields of expertise, an approach that is a result of experimentation in the decade the Chair has existed.
The elements of the initiative include workshops and talks designed to promote the exchange of knowledge and methods. It will also include a ‘barometer’ to help track AI’s implementation and overall impact on responsible leadership.
The initiative will engage with a network of institutions and academic publications, and an annual Grand Prix will recognise projects that focus on and explore the subject of AI and leadership.
Fabrice Marque, founder of the initiative and the current ESSEC Accenture Strategics Business Analytics Chair, said, “For years, we have explored the potential of using data and artificial intelligence in organisations. The synergies we have developed with our partners (Accenture, Accor, Dataiku, Engie, Eurofins, MSD, Orange) allowed us to evaluate and test innovative solutions before deploying them.
“With this initiative, we’re taking a major step: bringing together an engaged ecosystem to sustainably transform how leaders think, decide, and act in the face of tomorrow’s challenges. Our ambition is clear: to make AI a lever for performance, innovation and responsibility for […] leaders.”
Managing Director at Accenture and sponsor of the ESSEC/Accenture Chair and initiative, Aurélien Bouriot, said, “The ecosystem will benefit from the resources that Accenture puts at its disposal, and will also benefit our employees who participate.”
Laetitia Cailleteau, Managing Director at Accenture and leader of Responsible AI & Generative AI for Europe, highlighted the importance of future leaders understanding all aspects of AI.

Why AI Needs Us More Than We Need AI

In the modern era, artificial intelligence (AI) has become a transformative force, reshaping industries, enhancing efficiencies, and creating groundbreaking opportunities. However, amidst the excitement, it's essential to recognize that AI is not a standalone solution. Its existence and success hinge on human ingenuity, creativity, and ethical oversight.
The Human Role in AI Development
AI systems, no matter how advanced, are the products of human effort. From initial conceptualization to algorithm development, humans are the architects of AI. These systems rely on human-curated data to learn and evolve. Without accurate, diverse, and unbiased data provided by humans, AI models risk being ineffective or perpetuating societal biases.
Furthermore, human expertise is critical in defining the objectives and boundaries of AI applications. For instance, an AI used in healthcare must be tailored to specific medical scenarios, a process that requires domain knowledge from professionals in the field. This collaboration between AI and human experts ensures that the technology addresses real-world challenges effectively.
Ethical Oversight and Accountability
One of the most vital aspects where humans play a pivotal role is in ethical decision-making. AI lacks the moral compass to discern right from wrong. Decisions involving fairness, privacy, and societal impact must be guided by human values. Without this oversight, AI could exacerbate inequalities or infringe on individual rights.
Regulatory frameworks and ethical guidelines developed by humans act as guardrails for AI deployment. These frameworks ensure that AI is used responsibly and aligns with societal norms. For example, determining the boundaries of facial recognition technology in public spaces is a human-driven decision, balancing security needs with privacy concerns.
Innovation Through Collaboration
While AI can process vast amounts of information faster than humans, it cannot replicate human creativity and emotional intelligence. Many innovations stem from human intuition, curiosity, and the ability to think abstractly. By working alongside AI, humans can leverage the technology’s strengths while providing the imaginative spark that drives true innovation.
Fields like art, design, and storytelling highlight this synergy. AI can generate ideas or assist in tasks, but the essence of creativity remains uniquely human. This collaborative dynamic fosters groundbreaking advancements that neither humans nor AI could achieve alone.
Why AI Depends on Us
At its core, AI is a tool. It requires human input to function and evolve. The algorithms, hardware, and infrastructure that power AI are all designed and maintained by humans. Moreover, the continuous improvement of AI systems depends on ongoing research and experimentation—activities driven by human intellect.
AI also lacks the capacity for independent thought, emotional understanding, and context awareness. These are fundamental human traits that guide nuanced decision-making and problem-solving. Without these qualities, AI would be limited to executing predefined tasks, incapable of adapting to complex, dynamic environments.
The Human-AI Partnership
Rather than viewing AI as a replacement for human effort, it should be seen as a partner that amplifies our abilities. This partnership can unlock unparalleled opportunities, but it’s humans who will steer the course. By setting goals, providing context, and ensuring ethical practices, we remain the driving force behind AI’s impact on society.
Conclusion
While AI holds immense potential, it ultimately depends on human expertise, creativity, and values to realize its promise. As we integrate AI into more aspects of our lives, it’s crucial to remember that this technology needs us more than we need it. By embracing our role as its creators and stewards, we can ensure that AI serves humanity responsibly and effectively.

What is the future of public health campaigns in a digital age?
The future of public health campaigns in the digital age is undergoing a profound transformation, driven by rapid technological innovation and the evolving needs of diverse populations. At the forefront is the power of personalization, enabled by artificial intelligence (AI) and big data analytics. These technologies allow health campaigns to move away from one-size-fits-all approaches and instead deliver messages that are tailored to individual behaviors, preferences, and health histories. Wearable devices, mobile apps, and social media platforms generate a wealth of real-time data, which campaigns can use to identify emerging trends, anticipate public health needs, and respond more effectively. This data-driven approach makes interventions not only more targeted but also more impactful.
Digital accessibility and inclusivity are critical in ensuring these campaigns reach all segments of the population, including those in remote or underserved areas. Telehealth platforms offer opportunities to disseminate health education and services to individuals who may otherwise lack access to traditional healthcare infrastructure. Furthermore, creating multilingual and multimodal content—such as videos, animations, interactive tools, and accessible text—ensures that public health messages resonate with people from various linguistic and cultural backgrounds. By adopting an inclusive design approach, campaigns can bridge gaps in communication and health literacy, addressing barriers that have historically excluded marginalized groups.
Emerging technologies such as virtual and augmented reality (VR/AR) are redefining how people interact with public health content. These immersive tools can simplify complex health topics, such as demonstrating how vaccines work or teaching people how to perform life-saving techniques like CPR. Gamification is another innovation that holds significant promise, as it turns health-promoting activities into engaging experiences. Fitness apps with rewards, interactive challenges, and games designed to educate while entertaining can motivate individuals to adopt healthier habits, fostering long-term behavioral change.
Social media platforms will remain a central pillar in future public health campaigns, particularly as they provide unparalleled opportunities for engagement and dialogue. Collaborating with influencers, especially micro-influencers trusted by their communities, can amplify messages to reach specific audiences effectively. Interactive campaigns, such as live Q&A sessions with health experts, community challenges, or user-generated content, create a sense of participation and trust. These platforms also allow for two-way communication, enabling health authorities to address public concerns, dispel myths, and build confidence in health interventions.
A major challenge in the digital age is the proliferation of misinformation, which can undermine public health efforts. Combating this will require robust strategies, including deploying AI tools to identify and counter false information in real time. Partnerships with fact-checking organizations and collaborations with social media platforms can help validate credible sources and ensure accurate information is prioritized. Building digital literacy among the public will also be essential, empowering individuals to critically evaluate health information and make informed decisions.
Equity and ethics will play a pivotal role in shaping the future of digital health campaigns. While technology offers immense potential, the digital divide—stemming from disparities in internet access, device availability, and digital literacy—must be addressed to ensure that no one is left behind. Combining digital campaigns with traditional methods such as radio broadcasts, community workshops, and printed materials can bridge these gaps and ensure equitable access. Data privacy and security will also be critical; as campaigns increasingly rely on personal data to tailor messages, implementing robust safeguards will be essential to maintain public trust and prevent misuse.
Finally, community-centric approaches will make campaigns more effective and sustainable. By engaging local communities in the creation and dissemination of campaign content, health authorities can ensure that messages are relevant, culturally sensitive, and authentic. Crowdsourcing ideas and feedback from the target audience fosters a sense of ownership and enhances the credibility of public health initiatives. Tailoring global health messages to reflect local contexts will further ensure resonance, helping campaigns overcome cultural and societal barriers to adoption.
Together, these advancements mark a shift toward more adaptive, inclusive, and impactful public health campaigns. Leveraging digital tools while addressing challenges like misinformation, inequity, and privacy concerns will be key to meeting global health challenges with speed, precision, and humanity. Public health in the digital age has the potential not only to inform but also to inspire communities worldwide to take collective action for better health outcomes.

EPAM’s Retail Media Orchestration Toolkit and Google Cloud
EPAM’s Retail Media Orchestration Toolkit for Streamlined Ad Operations
Increase retail media success more quickly with Google Cloud and EPAM.
Retail media networks are not a novel form of advertising platform that enables merchants to sell advertising space to outside companies on their digital platforms. However, they will undergo a significant transformation in the upcoming year. As consumers’ concerns about privacy grow, they want more tailored advertising advice.
For many years, EPAM and Google Cloud have been developing retail media solutions, giving you the data and insights you need to enhance buyer experiences, improve metrics, and get more thorough and granular perspectives of your consumers.
Businesses who employ AI and gen AI and make the most use of first-party data will experience a return on investment in retail media. I am excited to inform the launch of EPAM’s Retail Media Orchestration Toolkit today, which will enable retailers of all sizes, regardless of how developed their retail media operations are, to take advantage of the opportunities that lie ahead in the upcoming year. The Retail Media Orchestration Toolkit gives you access to specialized, internal retail media operations that are coordinated with EPAM’s extensive retail knowledge and backed by Google and Google Cloud’s market-leading digital advertising capabilities.
You may significantly outperform your rivals and enhance your first-party data with previously unattainable information by utilizing Google Cloud’s AI and gen AI technologies and expertise.
Profits from retail media are still elusive
Even while many retailers have established retail media operations and are aware of the economic potential of first-party data, they still have difficulty seeing these initiatives through to maturity. Typical obstacles to optimizing retail media earnings consist of:
Marketers can choose from hundreds of retail media networks to host campaigns. This infrastructure cannot match the increased demand for data-driven insights. Companies want to spend their advertising resources on networks with comprehensive, data-driven insights, yet many retailers struggle to provide the in-depth information advertisers require. Few shops specialize in retail media; they sell products. The challenge is further compounded by the magnitude involved for many retailers.
Incapacity to deliver precise, quick measurements: Closed-loop campaign performance measurement, and in particular omnichannel measurement across various digital and physical consumer engagements, necessitates a degree of retail media technology, skill, and coordination that few merchants have.
The absence of resources and technology to enable data clean rooms Retail media are driven by consumer data. The success of advertising increases with the amount of detailed and thorough data. It’s critical to protect sensitive information, including comprehensive customer data, in order to uphold industry ethics, preserve consumer trust, and frequently comply with legal requirements. Data clean rooms offer a secure setting for several authorized individuals to use and exchange client data. However, many merchants lack the resources and knowledge necessary to maintain a data clean room, and the technological obstacles are substantial.
Data and workflow standardization challenges: Most retail media networks are made up of disparate independent software vendors (ISVs). They make use of their own protocols, guidelines, and reporting styles. As a result, incoming reporting data is constantly pouring in and needs to be converted to internal formats before being sent to advertisers. A lot of retailers try to deal with this by manually handling incoming data, which leads to more employees, worse performance when reporting to customers, and lower profitability for retail media.
Retail Media Orchestration Toolkit
Retailers can now deploy in-house, customized retail media solutions, just like Walmart, Tesco, Albertsons, and Kroger have done.
In collaboration with EPAM and Google Cloud, the Retail Media Orchestration Toolkit was created through Google Cloud’s Industry Value Network (IVN) project, utilizing ISV solutions like Moloco. With the help of the Toolkit, retailers may use their data to help their advertising clients and enhance their retail media operations.
EPAM’s extensive understanding of retail media operations stems from years of experience creating in-house, customized solutions powered by Google Cloud for some of the biggest retailers globally. Custom retail media solutions can be designed and implemented with Google Cloud’s comprehensive, end-to-end platform and solutions for audience capabilities, measurement, media execution, and innovation.
EPAM’s Toolkit, which is built on the cutting-edge Google Cloud Cortex Framework cloud-based data foundation, enables clients to make better use of their data, regardless of where it is stored. This includes first-party data from programs like Google Ad Manager, Google Search Ads 360, Display & Video 360, and others, making a true in-house, custom retail media solution a feasible option. The solution, which is a component of Google Cloud’s Industry Value Network, also makes use of ISV solutions to offer a complete and replicable solution via the pre-built connectors and accelerators.
Using the Retail Media Orchestration Toolkit, retailers benefit from:
An entirely owned, tailored, internal retail media system that is readily expandable when necessary
The capability of automating, standardizing, and streamlining retail media operations
Costly, prone to error human processes are replaced with fully automated ones.
Omnichannel measuring capabilities so they can show marketers the ROI and campaign effectiveness
Making better, data-driven decisions to optimize campaign performance across various, heterogeneous platforms
Advice on how to use cutting-edge technology like artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) to create a solution that meets their present demands.
Significant, measurable advantages are already being felt by retailers who are utilizing the EPAM and Google Cloud retail media solution, such as:
Increases in retail media revenue and advertiser demand of 15% to 20%
Double the campaign’s performance
40% time savings
Costs of retail media activities are reduced by 12%.
Retail media success’s four stages
Four steps make up the design and implementation of an internal solution using the Retail Media Orchestration Toolkit:
Combine, standardize, automate, evaluate, and display transactional and multichannel campaign delivery data for multichannel measurement.
Superior omnichannel measurement Data from user-level interactions across platforms and channels should be tracked, reported, and examined.
Audiences: Using unique segmentation models that are built within your own cloud environment and syndicated to your retail media partners, create high-value predictive audiences based on your transactional data.
Utilize analytics to create and improve new revenue sources by drawing on brand and consumer data.
Regardless of their degree of retail media maturity, retailers were intended to profit from this staged approach. When you’re ready, you can take use of the insight-boosting potential of Google Cloud’s AI and ML capabilities. Your solution may be set up and installed to suit your unique requirements, yielding benefits practically instantly.
Prepare to expand your media efforts in retail
Due to its youth, very few, if any, organizations have fully matured their retail media activities. There is still room for improvement, even for large retailers who have created their own in-house retail media solutions. Some areas that usually lack technological maturity include optimizing workflows, creating complete automation of retail media operations, and making the most of emerging capabilities with AI and ML.
However, where is your organization now? How far along is your company in realizing the full potential of retail media? What actions are necessary to get to that point?
To address those questions, a maturity evaluation is used. It will only take two or three meetings with important members of your company to give us a broad overview of your retail media business. And it will use that information to create a customized action plan for you that includes:
A multi-year plan that addresses technology, procedures, and collaborations and is tailored to your company’s maturity level
A projection of retail media’s profit and loss that identifies important dependencies
A structure of investments and resources to help you expand more quickly
Simply put, your maturity assessment shows you how to get from where you are to where you want to be and shows you how to maximize the potential of retail media for your company.

#PrivacyPlease: The Hidden Dangers of Oversharing on Indian Social Media
Picture this: You're scrolling through your favorite social media app, double-tapping pictures of your friend's Goa vacation, when suddenly you see an ad for the exact sunglasses they're wearing. Coincidence? Think again! Welcome to the murky world of social media privacy breaches in India, where your likes, shares, and comments could be painting a detailed picture of your life – and not just for your friends to see.
Why I'm Raising the Red Flag
As a digital innovation enthusiast, I'm both amazed and alarmed by India's social media revolution. It's connecting millions and driving social change, but it's also creating a treasure trove of personal data that's catching the eye of not just advertisers, but also cybercriminals. It's like hosting a giant party where everyone's invited – including some guests you definitely didn't put on the list!
The Social Media Tsunami
India's love affair with social media is reaching epic proportions:
India has over 467 million social media users as of 2022 (Statista, 2023).
Indians spend an average of 2.36 hours per day on social media (GlobalWebIndex, 2022).
That's a lot of data being shared, liked, and potentially exposed!
The Sneaky Ways Your Posts Betray You
How is your innocent scrolling and posting leaving you vulnerable? Let's peek behind the curtain:
Data Mining Bonanza: Your interests, habits, and relationships are being mapped and sold.
Location Leaks: That check-in at the new café? It's telling more than just your taste in coffee.
Facial Recognition Fiasco: Your tagged photos could be training AI without your knowledge.
Clickbait Catastrophes: That irresistible quiz might be harvesting your personal info.
Who's Paying the Price?
When social media privacy goes out the window, the consequences can be far-reaching:
Individuals: Your digital footprint could affect job prospects, relationships, and personal security.
Businesses: Employee oversharing could lead to corporate data leaks.
Society: Targeted misinformation campaigns can exploit data to manipulate public opinion.
The Regulatory Tug-of-War
India's lawmakers are trying to catch up, but it's like trying to lasso a speeding bullet train:
The Information Technology (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules, 2021, aim to regulate social media platforms, but privacy protection remains a challenge.
The Personal Data Protection Bill was passed in 2019.
It's a bit like trying to use a landline to manage a smartphone – the technology is evolving faster than the rules!
Reclaiming Your Digital Privacy
Don't worry, you don't need to become a social media hermit! Here's how to stay connected while protecting your privacy:
Audit your privacy settings – make sure you're not accidentally oversharing.
Think before you post – does the world really need to know you're on vacation right now?
Be wary of third-party apps – that fun game might be a data-harvesting tool in disguise.
Use strong, unique passwords for each platform – no, your pet's name isn't a strong password.
Enable two-factor authentication – it's like adding a second lock to your digital front door.
The Bottom Line
As India continues its social media love affair, we need to make sure we're not giving away the keys to our digital lives. Stay savvy, stay informed, and remember – in the world of social media, what happens online doesn't always stay online.
So, the next time you're about to post that perfectly filtered selfie, take a moment to think about who might be peeking over your digital shoulder!
Stay safe, stay smart, and maybe think twice before accepting that friend request from a long-lost relative you've never heard of!

Week in Review
October 23rd-29th
Welcome to Fragile Practice, where I attempt to make something of value out of stuff I have to read.
My future plan is to do longer-form original pieces on interesting topics or trends. For now, I'm going to make the weekly reviews habitual and see if I have any time left.
Technology
OpenAI forms team to study ‘catastrophic’ AI risks, including nuclear threats - Tech Crunch; Kyle Wiggers
OpenAI launched a new research team called AI Safety and Security to investigate the potential harms of artificial intelligence focused on AI alignment, AI robustness, AI governance, and AI ethics.
Note: Same energy as “cigarette company funds medical research into smoking risks”.
Artists Allege Meta’s AI Data Deletion Request Process Is a ‘Fake PR Stunt’ - Wired; Kate Knibbs
Artists who participated in Meta’s Artificial Intelligence Artist Residency Program accused the company of failing to honor their data deletion requests and claim that Meta used their personal data to train its AI models without their consent.
Note: Someday we will stop being surprised that corporate activities without obvious profit motive are all fake PR stunts.
GM and Honda ditch plan to build cheaper electric vehicles - The Verge; Andrew J. Hawkins
General Motors and Honda cancel their joint venture to develop and produce cheaper electric vehicles for the US market, citing the chip shortage, rising costs of battery materials, and the changing market conditions.
Note: What are the odds this isn’t related to the 7 billion dollars the US government announced to create hydrogen hubs.
'AI divide' across the US leaves economists concerned - The Register; Thomas Claburn
A new study by economists from Harvard University and MIT reveals a significant gap in AI adoption and innovation across different regions in the US.
The study finds that AI usage is highest in California's Silicon Valley and the San Francisco Bay Area, but was also noted in Nashville, San Antonio, Las Vegas, New Orleans, San Diego, and Tampa, as well as Riverside, Louisville, Columbus, Austin, and Atlanta.
Nvidia to Challenge Intel With Arm-Based Processors for PCs - Bloomberg; Ian King
Nvidia is using Arm technology to develop CPUs that would challenge Intel processors in PCs, and which could go on sale as soon as 2025.
Note: I am far from an NVIDIA fan, but I’m stoked for any amount of new competition in the CPU space.
New tool lets artists fight AI image bots by hiding corrupt data in plain sight - Engadget; Sarah Fielding
A team at the University of Chicago created Nightshade, a tool that lets artists fight AI image bots by adding undetectable pixels into an image that can alter how a machine-learning model produces content and what that finished product looks like.
Nightshade is intended to protect artists work and has been tested on both Stable Diffusion and an in-house AI built by the researchers.
IBM's NorthPole chip runs AI-based image recognition 22 times faster than current chips - Tech Xplore; Bob Yirka
NorthPole combines the processing module and the data it uses in a two-dimensional array of memory blocks and interconnected CPUs, and is reportedly inspired by the human brain.
NorthPole can currently only run specialized AI processes and not training processes or large language models, but the researchers plan to test connecting multiple chips together to overcome this limitation.
Apple’s $130 Thunderbolt 4 cable could be worth it, as seen in X-ray CT scans - Ars Technica; Kevin Purdy
Note: These scans are super cool. And make me feel somewhat better about insisting on quality cables. A+.

The Shifting Web
On-by-default video calls come to X, disable to retain your sanity - The Register; Brandon Vigliarolo
Video and audio calling is limited to anyone you follow or who is in your address book, if you granted X permission to comb through it.
Calling other users also requires that they’ve sent at least one direct message to you before.
Only premium users can place calls, but everyone can receive them.
Google Search Boss Says Company Invests to Avoid Becoming ‘Roadkill’ - The New York Times; Nico Grant
Google’s senior vice president overseeing search said that he sees a world of threats that could humble his company at any moment.
Google Maps is getting new AI-powered search updates, an enhanced navigation interface and more - Tech Crunch; Aisha Malik
Note: These AI recommender systems are going to be incredibly valuable advertising space. It is interesting that Apple decided to compete with Google in maps but not in basic search, but has so far not placed ads in the search results.
Reddit finally takes its API war where it belongs: to AI companies - Ars Technica; Scharon Harding
Reddit met with generative AI companies to negotiate a deal for being paid for its data, and may block crawlers if no deal is made soon.
Note: Google searches for info on Reddit often seem more effective than searching Reddit itself. If they are unable to make a deal, and Reddit follows through, it will be a legitimate loss for discoverability but also an incredibly interesting experiment to see what Reddit is like without Google.
Bandcamp’s Entire Union Bargaining Team Was Laid Off - 404 Media; Emanuel Maiberg
Bandcamp’s new owner (Songtradr) offered jobs to just half of existing employees, with cuts disproportionately hitting union leaders. Every member of the union’s eight-person bargaining team was laid off, and 40 of the union's 67 members lost their jobs.
Songtradr spokesperson Lindsay Nahmiache claimed that the firm didn’t have access to union membership information.
Note: This just sucks. Bandcamp is rad, and it’s hard to imagine it continuing to be rad after this. I wonder if Epic had ideas for BC that didn’t work out.

Surveillance & Digital Privacy
Mozilla Launches Annual Digital Privacy 'Creep-o-Meter'. This Year's Status: 'Very Creepy' - Slashdot
Mozilla gave the current state of digital privacy a 75.6/100, with 100 being the creepiest.
They measured security features, data collection, and data sharing practices of over 500 gadgets, apps, and cars to come up with their score.
Every car Mozilla tested failed to meet their privacy and security standards.
Note: It would be great if even one auto brand would take privacy seriously.
EPIC Testifies in Support of Massachusetts Data Privacy and Protection Act -Electronic Privacy Information Center (EPIC)
Massachusetts version of ADPPA.
Note: While it may warm my dead heart to see any online privacy protections in law, scrambling to do so in response to generative AI is unlikely to protect Americans in any meaningful way from the surveillance driven form of capitalism we’ve all been living under for decades.
Complex Spy Platform StripedFly Bites 1M Victims - Dark Reading
StripedFly is a complex platform disguised as a cryptominer and evaded detection for six years by using a custom version of EternalBlue exploit, a built-in Tor network tunnel, and trusted services like GitLab, GitHub, and Bitbucket to communicate with C2 servers and update its functionality.
iPhones have been exposing your unique MAC despite Apple's promises otherwise - Ars Technica
A privacy feature which claimed to hide the Wi-Fi MAC address of iOS devices when joining a network was broken since iOS 14, and was finally patched in 17.1, released on Wednesday.
Note: I imagine this bug was reported a while ago, but wasn’t publically reported until the fix was released as a term of apple’s bug bounty program.
What the !#@% is a Passkey? - Electronic Frontier Foundation
Note: I welcome our passkey overlords.

What Are the Ethical Considerations for Undress AI?

The rise of artificial intelligence (AI) has brought about numerous innovations, but it has also raised significant ethical concerns. Among these is the development of "Undress AI" – AI systems designed to generate images that remove clothing from photos of individuals. This technology has sparked a heated debate on privacy, consent, and the potential for misuse. This article delves into the ethical considerations surrounding Undress AI, examining the implications for personal privacy, consent, and societal impact.
Privacy Concerns
Invasion of Personal Privacy
One of the primary ethical issues with AI Undress is the invasion of personal privacy. These AI systems can take images of individuals, often without their knowledge or consent, and produce altered versions that strip them of their clothing. This blatant disregard for privacy can have severe psychological and emotional impacts on the individuals targeted. The unauthorized manipulation of personal images is a direct violation of an individual's right to privacy.
Data Security
Another significant concern is the security of the data used to train and operate these AI systems. The development of Undress AI requires large datasets of images, which can be harvested from social media, public forums, and other online sources. The collection and use of these images without proper consent and security measures can lead to data breaches and the misuse of personal information. Ensuring data security and ethical sourcing of training data is crucial to address these privacy concerns.
Consent and Autonomy
Lack of Informed Consent
Informed consent is a cornerstone of ethical behavior, particularly when it involves personal data. Undress AI technology often operates without the knowledge or consent of the individuals whose images are being manipulated. This lack of informed consent violates the principle of autonomy, as individuals are deprived of their right to control how their personal images are used. Ethical AI development must prioritize obtaining explicit consent from individuals before using their images.
Exploitation and Coercion
The potential for exploitation and coercion is another serious ethical concern. Undress AI can be weaponized to create non-consensual explicit content, leading to blackmail, harassment, and reputational damage. Victims of such exploitation may feel powerless and vulnerable, facing significant emotional and psychological distress. Addressing these risks requires strict regulations and safeguards to prevent the misuse of AI technologies.
Societal Impact
Reinforcement of Harmful Stereotypes
Undress AI has the potential to reinforce harmful gender stereotypes and objectification. By creating explicit images without consent, the technology contributes to a culture that objectifies and commodifies individuals, particularly women. This perpetuation of harmful stereotypes can have long-lasting effects on societal attitudes towards gender and body image. It is essential to consider the broader societal implications of AI technologies and work towards promoting respectful and ethical use.
Legal and Regulatory Challenges
The rapid advancement of AI technologies often outpaces the development of legal and regulatory frameworks. AI Undress poses significant challenges for lawmakers and regulators, who must balance innovation with the protection of individual rights. Developing comprehensive regulations that address the ethical use of AI is crucial to prevent misuse and ensure accountability. This includes establishing clear guidelines for consent, data security, and the consequences of unethical behavior.
Conclusion
Undress AI presents a complex web of ethical considerations that demand careful scrutiny. The invasion of personal privacy, lack of informed consent, potential for exploitation, and reinforcement of harmful societal norms are all critical issues that must be addressed. As AI technology continues to evolve, it is essential to prioritize ethical considerations and develop robust legal and regulatory frameworks to safeguard individual rights and promote responsible innovation. By doing so, we can harness the power of AI while minimizing its potential for harm, ensuring a more ethical and respectful technological future.
