Hi! I'm curious on your thoughts of this meta.
hi anon! so sorry for keeping you waiting with this response, i know it’s been months. unfortunately this probably isn’t gonna be the response you wanted to hear—me breaking down this zk brainrot rant and subverting their claims with canon content. please allow me to explain though (this is gonna be long sorry):
the reasons i’ve been slow to answer this ask and others that have sent me zk rants are:
since joining atla twitter (@arrsapphics if you’re cool) i’ve been exposed to a lot more zk coke-fueled rants and just do not have the energy to torture myself by willingly reading their shit
a lot of these zutara stans on tumblr are a lot more deranged and genuinely horrible people now that i’ve been exposed to the twitter zks. of course, zks are stupid and ship-obsessed on every platform and some of them (one in particular comes to mind—if you’re on twitter then you know) are genuinely just as bad, but i feel the ones on here have a special type of hatred considering they can tag their posts to ensure their hate stays within the echo chamber
CONTENT WARNING: RAP3
the second reason is the biggest part of why i will no longer entertain posts from longing-for-rain. i have recently found out via twitter that they write rape fanfiction of katara. being a chronically online shipper is one thing but to write fanfic of katara being raped so that zuko can save her is truly where i have to disengage. they have also posted rants of them analyzing katara’s body in the show, measuring the size of her breasts and hips to support the delusions in their head about this 14 year old girl. i truly cannot engage with this person’s rants as if they’re just regular shipping war bullshit. this person is a sick individual who not only projects onto a 14 year old brown indigenous character but also sexualizes and adultifies her
for these reasons, i refuse to read a rant posted by her and other big zk blogs on this app. people who take their obvious fetishes and racism and project them onto underaged asian and indigenous characters have gained too much attention from me on this blog. i can’t continue reading rants from these people and analyzing them because i know these people are not treating this show and its characters under an appropriate lens and arguing with their points will do absolutely nothing but enrage me, other people in the ka fandom, and fuel their delusions with our anger as “proof” their arguments hold any weight. on twitter, i’ll continue interacting with what comes up on my tl from my atla moots and if that includes shitting on a deranged zk then fine. but on tumblr i refuse to engage, especially since this app has a tagging system that i use religiously
and i would like to encourage anyone who reads this to also refuse to take this person’s rants seriously and look at them as nothing more than cope-hatred by a sick individual with sick fantasies and thoughts about these minor characters. of course, if you choose to still engage then i won’t stop you and will probably like and reblog your posts 😭
i will just no longer willingly click on links to their rants and subject myself to their bullshit. however, if you’d like for me to argue against zk claims then you are more than welcome to send me a summary of what they’ve said and i’ll do my best to organize a response! i absolutely do not want to discourage anyone from sending me asks because i truly do enjoy answering yalls questions and i love knowing that people like hearing what i have to say on these things lol. please, send me asks about anything and everything! just please understand that i won’t be clicking any links to their posts and blogs or be entertaining anything that comes from the three main delusional zk blogs 🙏
i hope this has made sense and again, i’m sorry anon for taking so long to answer this ask and for not giving the expected response 🫶

What’s further absurd about Camila being more of a mom to Hunter than Luz in fanon is that. Camila and Hunter have one(1) solo interaction across the entire show and it’s her pulling him out of the water. They never say anything to each other, the scene transitions to the group worrying about Hunter. But then we see Camila interact with Luz at the end of the episode, in fact she has MULTIPLE interactions with Luz that episode and in general!!!
Meanwhile Darius is right there, he was mean to Hunter once, but he made up for it in the same episode by validating Hunter, looking out for him, giving him a way to talk to his new friends! He worries about Hunter in Hollow Mind. When the kids reunite with their parents, Hunter has nobody until Darius shows up.
And if y’all can forgive Eda for being immature with King a few times in S1, you can do the same for Darius. If you can forgive Alador’s abuse and neglect towards his kids by embracing their forgiveness, Darius is nothing. Darius is basically the only adult to actually talk to Hunter directly besides you know who and Eda, but that was twice and she was making fun of him the first time. Raine also showed concern but I barely see that dynamic.
It’s insane because it’s not enough that Hunter needs love from an adult for these people, they need it to be Camila’s love specifically!!! Despite Luz’s entire arc and the show in general being kicked off from Luz feeling like her mother didn’t love her enough by sending her to that reality check camp. Oh, Hunter needs someone kind for him because of trauma? Luz also has trauma, S3 has her go on a thinly-veiled suicidal rant.
Istfg I see Camila and Hunter more than I see Camila and Amity, and at least Amity is basically her daughter in law, plus it’s Amity getting away from her two abusive white parents. Meanwhile people denying Darius are demonizing him for being a black man who was mean once.
He’s not even Luz’s brother, and I’m sure part of the insistence of Camila as Hunter’s mom is an extension of that; Except the ‘Siblings’ dynamic between Luz and Hunter is inaccurate and exaggerated, esp in favor of Luz and King or Vee! We see so much fanart and fanfic of Camila just hanging out with Hunter even casually without angst, but not her own blood daughter.
Like yeah maybe it’s fun to explore the two-month period in the human realm and how Camila was the only adult these kids had; But people continue to hype her up as Hunter’s mom in settings outside of that timeframe!!! We see Luz come out to her mom and everything, we have her being raised by her mother! And Camila taking care of Hunter would not suck so hard if Luz wasn’t completely overshadowed, if Hunter wasn’t everywhere and inserted into everything! With fans insisting Hunter’s a Noceda and NEEDS to be in group photos like that, insisting on joint custody as if Luz and Camila don’t have that much of a relationship with Hunter to begin with and Darius is sufficient, crying about how he deserved more in the finale! Boohoo.
I’m gonna be real here, Hunter fans are the weakest link in this fandom despite being the most prevalent at this rate. They’ll rather make up stuff for him to talk about than acknowledge other characters, or even take other characters’ moments to give to him; Like remember when Luz had a nightmare sequence where she was dressed in Belos’ clothes and felt the weight of everyone’s accusations, and then some fanartist made a piece of that happening to Hunter instead??? I have to see Camila hugging Hunter while he wields String Bean, who is Luz’s Palisman when Waffles is right there without a confirmed creation date, so they could’ve easily been shortly after the finale!!!
It is SUCH an admission of envy and unconscious racism that y’all need to take traits and moments that belong to other characters and give it to your white boy to enjoy them, instead of enjoying these characteristics with the characters they actually belong to! And don’t make this about you and how you personally aren’t consciously racist or whatever, because this is about a group trend and PoC should not have to bear the burden of screening every individual of guilt. And yeah it is racist, hell it’s basically the Mammy archetype where a WoC is expected to prioritize her white charge over her own child.
And don’t even try to argue you’re innocent because you’re a PoC, PoC are just as capable of white favoritism and I speak from experience! For chrissakes everyone we’re snappy about this because being gentle about it has never worked for PoC. If you feel upset by this than actually do something about it and learn instead of wallowing in self pity or even denying it.

there seems to be far too many fans who can't seem to wrap their head around the fact that no relationship in the Vampire Chronicles is healthy. every relationship includes an element of abuse/power imbalance by normal standards. literally every single one.
they are all monsters who are no longer constrained by societal rules. so I don't think it's too crazy to expect them to do mosntorus things. the genre is Gothic HORROR. the show really prioritizes the HORROR element more so than other adaptaions, which i love.
i don't need louis to be a liar to enjoy lestat. if louis lied or misremebered things about the fight in episode 5, i literally do not care because it's never gonna make me hate louis. the baseline of what constitutes "evil" or "bad" is so different in iwtv because of the fact that they are NOT HUMAN. Claudia is literally a serial killer and she's still mother to me. ykwim?
the nature of vampirism is they have to kill to survive. so it would be really cool if people could accept louis, armand, and claudia as complex characters who are fundamentally not good people (because they aren't people!) without being racist about it. THEY ARE ALL KILLERS
im more interested in this exploration of the complexities of memory and seeing how the show integrates the other books into this story in a way that hasn't been done before than I am in discoursing about whether louis is a liar or not. who gives a shit???? grow up and realize that there are no good guys here and that's OKAY

“I hate Luz! She’s annoying!” “The show would’ve been so much better without Luz.” “Luz is such a poorly written character.” Bro then why did you keep watching? She’s literally the main character. If you were seething in rage every time she was on screen you can’t convince me you enjoyed watching the show.
Why is she annoying? Why don’t you like her? Is it because she’s a 14 year old who acts like… a 14 year old? Is it because she’s made some minor mistakes? Just like literally every other character? Is it because she’s a girl? A teenage girl? A female who isn’t perfect? A girl with flaws? Is it because she’s a non white female character?
Do you hate when Luz is loud and outspoken but love when Eda or King does it? Do you think Luz is a terrible person but were quick to forgive Amity? Do you think Luz is irredeemable but don’t hate Alador for how he treated his kids? Do you nitpick every little thing Luz does and says but consider Hunter a perfect little baby who can do no wrong?
You’re allowed to not like characters but sometimes you need to take a step back and consider if it’s due to your own biases. If you just don’t find Luz relatable or whatever that’s fine but constantly bashing her over such non issues when you don’t do the same for male and/or white characters is not.

so i started this show and it just gets worse and worseeeee not only did it lift the romance subplot directly from twilight (and not well) but they also are trying to play the forbidden love angle hard in the fantasy racism vein except it's a "cross-species" relationship between the two whitest people i've ever seen in my life and there are three people of color in the whole (first season of the) show who aren't villains and it seems that every other episode (and sometimes ebery episode and sometimes twice an episode!) there is a man physically or magically subjugating a woman and i keep waiting for the big reveal at the end to be stolen from fucking rainbow rowell

The thing thats consistently bothered me the most in the fallout show is the racism. I would hesitate to recommend it because of that alone. And there was obvious love that the set and prop designers, actors, costume department, and even maybe the writers put into the show! There are themes and characters in fallout that i'm certain would resonate with fans of color!
It KILLS me that so many of the fallout entries are damn well unplayable/watchable in this regard because the writers simply Don't Care how the people in their work are presented. That this like hugely popular world with a lot of worldbuilding and thought behind it does such wrong to so many people, fans and otherwise, that you cannot find any game in the series that does it right or well. It alienates a lot of people who might've been fans just because the majority white creators and fanbase don't give a shit, and I'm sick of it.
it's not enough to say "in the fallout in my head that racism doesn't happen," you actually have to put some things into PRACTICE. Allow space in your head, your games/show, your fan spaces for people of color! notice and say something when you see racism coming from media, yourself, and others!

The new Velma show seems to neatly fall into this trend of tv shows (paramount heathers, leaked powerpuff girls script) that want to seem progressive by having a diverse cast, while simultaneously wanting to preserve that same edgy, punch-down comedy style found in 'centrist' or conservative media. They want the praise for having female, queer, and characters of colour while still retaining an audience made up of mainly edgy white men laughing at how ridiculous ‘the minorities’ are behaving. It’s a punch-down comedy wolf in progressive sheep clothing.
The fundamental flaw in this logic is that show runners assume the audience that would enjoy this humour will see past that supposedly progressive façade… and that often doesn’t happen. A lot of these specific edgy types see diversity as a red flag and immediately presume some type of agenda. It’s almost like seeing a minority participate in the joke (even though they’re still very much the punchline) zaps all the humour out of it or they can’t understand that the joke is still for them if it isn’t said by someone that looks exactly like them. And because they (especially, but not only, cishet white men) recognise all the jokes from things they like, but don’t find them funny anymore, the only reasonable explanation they have is that diversity is bad and makes it unfunny, instead of realising their inherent inability to recognise and relate to any character that isn’t a white man.
Meanwhile, an audience that would appreciate a diverse cast does recognise the comedy for what it is: cheap jokes made at their expense. At most there are occasional jabs thrown in at the white and/or male characters which often don’t relate to these identities in any fundamental or even realistic way. So you have this show that constantly uses it’s minority characters as punchlines and only includes vaguely progressive, but ultimately pretty universally accepted, messaging hoping progressive audiences will be enamoured with the occasional ‘girlboss moment™️’, while not noticing that vast amounts of regressive ideals.
In the end neither audience feels appealed to and the show is a massive failure. While it might be satisfying to see that these conservative audiences are too blinded by, let’s be honest here, identity politics to recognise something that is clearly made for them, ultimately all that is remembered is that ‘the comedy show featuring a lot of diversity’ failed. And it becomes harder for people who actually want to make media with, and especially for, minorities have a harder time getting any funding. Shows like these are a lose lose situation when it comes to furthering diversity in the media landscape and it’s increasingly frustrating to see this happen again and again.

ppl who only conditionally care about child abuse based on whether the victim makes them uncomfy while they're being abused contribute to a real life child's abuse by sending hate asks regularly, attempting to gaslight them, calling them terrible names, accusing them of terrible things, telling them directly how much they hate the characters the child relates to and enjoys talking about, and being generally racist and ableist in a way that seriously might have scarred me for life, making a literal teenager hate their hobbies, favorite shows, and the people who enjoy those things, and ultimately cyberbullying a child out of multiple fandoms because they don't want to think critically or acknowledge their own faults, all while being 35 and really embarrassing themselves because someone half their age has a better grasp on the concept of nuance than them: more at 6
but noooo, y'all "love neurodivergent/disabled people," have "racists/ableists DNI" in your bios, and don't say slurs, which is all you have to do to not be racist/ableist, so *I'm* some psycho black bitch and you're a wittle angel like the fictional character you infantilize
(P.S. I swear to fucking god if people respond to this post with "but he sexually assaulted someone" and ignore literally every other personality trait/experience he had that could've been relatable to a child abuse survivor and the way people mistreated me, a real human being, which Charlie is not by the way, I will start doing the things you wanted to do to Ben)

Well, I’m still glad that Gojo was always a character who was growing and learning at least. He’s literally one of my favorite characters of all time now. Like, he’s never been as perfect as how the fans would make him out to be despite canonically being viewed as an absolute nuisance to everyone around him (I don’t think his peers necessarily hate him but a lot of them probably hate to see him coming and the ones who’ve dealt with him long enough to consider him a friend, tolerate him and groan whenever he opens his mouth, too 😭… out of love. He’s extremely childish so there is only sm the other adults around him can take and to an extent, his students. I think the only characters in canon who adore him and their eye’s sparkle whenever he’s around, and being a silly teacher was Yuuji and Miwa (she asked him for his autograph (he’s the most famous sorcerer in the jjk world) and when she was alone, she did a little dance in the empty hallway 🥺…) from what we’ve seen even though the others still care about him, too. They just find him rather annoying, which he most definitely is. And he does it on purpose. He plays too much.)

For some reason I've been thinking about the Big Bang Theory and all its lost potential.
I'm thinking of the first episode and how they would have the typical Leonard is interested in his new neighbor Penny because she is beautiful. Sheldon could keep pointing out that it would never work because they have nothing in common. Sheldon also assumes she's vapid and shallow and a mean girl.
Penny will talk to them, flirt, but seems very closed off. Other than that, she's acting like her usual self in the first episode.
Then at the end of the episode, Leonard sees her struggling to carry something in to her apartment. He and Sheldon will go to help and she'll quickly say no but its too late. Leonard sees the inside of her apartment for the first time and its decked out in nerdy stuff. Penny is also a big nerd but she's very insecure about it not even wanting the nerdy boys across the hall to find out. But Penny has a lot of stuff, even very rare stuff that the boys can't get their hands on. She's also an artist and a cosplayer and has a whole sketchbook of fanart and a closet full of costumes she made. Suddenly, to Sheldon, Penny is the coolest person he's ever met and he's start struck as he's finding rare merch everywhere. The episode ends with Penny, Leonard, Sheldon, Howard, and Raj all watching a lost episode of a show that Penny managed to get her hands on.
They missed out on so much humor by not having the girls also be nerds. There are so many funny plot lines.
Sheldon being upset about a way a Star Trek plot line went, so Penny draws him a comic of how he wants the plot line to go.
Penny getting cast on a movie or a TV show of her favorite book. But she's angry because the writer/director totally didn't get the point or themes of the book and she goes to vent about it to Leonard and Sheldon. As soon she tells them what was changed Sheldon is like "that is not acceptable!" and they both go to set and try to fix the movie.
Penny having dated other hot nerds in the past some BNFs and Leonard being insecure about this.
That really dumb guy she dated could be a reoccurring character who is also a big nerd. Funny hijinks with this. Like dumb guy looking very cool in his cosplays (that are usually the big tough guy of the group).
Bernadette being a biologist who writes smutty fanfiction in her spare time. She is also "pervy". Howard would still be a perv but not in an abusive way. (maybe kinky is a better word. Howard won't sexually harass anyone in this version). There will be a reoccurring joke on how they play out sex scenes Bernadette writes in her fanfics. I also want to make Bernadette bisexual. She'll show off pictures of girls she's dated in her past, all of who are extremely hot making the boys jealous of her. She and Howard will talk about hot girl characters together. (and Howard will listen to her talk about all the hot boy characters she likes).
Bernadette and Penny getting into a big ship war. Their OTP is the other's NOTP. The girls will stop speaking to each other and the guys will try to help them work it out. Amy will tell them that they are missing out on the important themes and plot lines of the show.
Amy and Sheldon being sex repulsed Asexuals and the other's not understanding it at first. They'll try it once and be like well that wasn't bad but let's never do it again.
Sheldon and Penny being pretty much bffs and they are the ones that make the costumes for everyone. They would also spend hours venting about bad adaptions or stupid decisions a show or movie made while Leonard sits and waits till they are finished because he just wants to go to the bedroom.
Penny also being the one who gets along best with Sheldon. She never finds him annoying and will tell him when he's out of line. Sheldon will listen to her because he thinks Penny is the smartest out of the group after him (and later Amy) because she understands when a story does something stupid and she knows how to get her hands on rare stuff. She also called him up to tell him Leonard Nemoy was at her restaurant. The only reason why the two aren't a couple is because Penny loves sex and Sheldon wants nothing to do with it. The two also enjoy friendship way more.
Amy telling Bernadette that many of her sex scenes in her fanfics are not physically possible.
A disastrous camping episode. Penny knows how to camp and does her best to save the day.
Part of me wants to give Raj a girlfriend (thinking of making her a chemist) and part of me wants both Raj and Howard to find out that they are bi and Howard, Raj, and Bernadette being a throuple. It would all happen spontaneously when the three are watching a movie together. (Howard and Raj would be very insecure about their sexuality until this point and this is where they would also come out. Bernadette would suspect they were but not bring it up) Then there could be a thing where some guy asks Bernadette if she's into threesomes after finding out she's bisexual and then her going "uh yeah, and she puts her arms around both Howard and Raj.
The gang bringing a non nerdy friend to a convention (maybe a guy Penny is dating before she dates Leonard) and him being surprised at how many girls are there. Bernadette swiftly informs him that women were the ones that started nerd conventions.
Yeah so much lost humor by not making the girls nerds.

Ed is a brilliant character. He’s maybe even beating out Lucius as my 2nd favorite now. I’ve written more OFMD fanfic with him as a protagonist than I have for any other fandom in over a decade. I’ve put an Ed-inspired character in a D&D campaign I’m in. I’ve forgiven him for things that I would have a priori considered dealbreaker traits in my favs (making someone kill their own pet). I don’t want to understate how excellent Ed is here.
But I feel like some Ed fans are very gatekeepy about it. Like, one of my favorite things about Ed is that he is dangerous and unhinged! It’s a great contrast with him internally being a cinnamon roll who just wants to be cuddled and held. Him being scary only heightens the cuteness of the scenes where he’s vulnerable, IMO. But I see a lot of takes that are like, “writing Ed as being violent or quick to anger is BAD and RACIST.”
Or like, talking about Ed’s flaws (especially with respect to his relationship with Izzy). Flawed characters are interesting! Ed is impulsive, and this leads to interesting plots. Ed has mood swings, and this something a lot of people find relatable. Ed doesn’t communicate very well with Izzy, and this combos with Izzy’s general social cluelessness to some exciting disasters (Izzy not getting the “no really, Ed doesn’t want Stede dead now” memo, e.g.) But again, I’ve seen takes that equate bringing up Ed’s flaws (even if only in response to someone else bringing up Izzy’s flaws) as meaning that the person dislikes Ed and also is racist.
(It’s worth noting that I think I’ve seen like, one person who actually says they dislike Ed, and they said that it was for personal issues. At no point have they indicated that they think other people are wrong for liking Ed.)
I *have* seen people write Ed and/or Izzy in OOC ways, with Ed being way more of an asshole to Izzy (while Izzy is way more innocent and selfless) than he should be. Sometimes I stop reading these fics, sometimes the fic is good enough that I just deal with feeling kind of annoyed. But I don’t assume that the author is malicious or racist just because of OOC writing. It turns out that OOC writing exists for all characters in all fandoms, and this is a general property of fanfiction.

avatar (the james cameron movie) is like detroit become human to me where i can see the potential and the themes its trying to approach but ultimately fails to, simply bc its written by a white guy whos never had to reflect on his own internal biases and would rather appropriate the struggles of bipoc for his own pet issue that cannot be discussed without fully acknowledging said struggles. so it ends up being a really sanitized and whitewashed version of itself that manages to say absolutely nothing substantial and treat itself like its groundbreaking regardless
