New #review The Taking of Jake Livingston by #RyanDouglass @ryan_souflee I loved this book, and it was a great spooky season read. This was an amazing, haunting, sad story that comes with a lot of trigger warnings. It's dark, complex, and reflective of a lot of the trauma that I think a lot of Black queer folk can relate to, apart from the ghost story. Luckily, there's just enough of a budding romance and new friendships to temper all the harsher emotions, so that the reader doesn't feel swamped by them. Poor Jake is a bit beaten down by life in so many ways and just wants to be different from who he is: one of two Black boys in his school, gay, and never quite fitting in. Plus, the ability to see ghosts, spectres stuck in the moments leading up to their deaths, doesn't help, especially when a very violent ghost decides that Jake is the thing he wants most. As a parent, I found this book so hard to read because it shows just how hard being a teenager can be, especially when things like racial and sexual identity, mental health, abuse, and bullying are thrown into the mix. I wanted to reach out to both Jake and Sawyer and give the hurting little boys inside them big hugs. I really liked the way that Ryan Douglass resolves the story, though. It's a bright spark of renewed hope and life after all that darkness. 🖤 If you're dealing with any of the issues in this book, please reach out. It gets better. https://blacktrans.org/ https://nbjc.org/ https://www.brownboiproject.org/ https://itgetsbetter.org/ https://www.thetrevorproject.org/ https://www.tnlr.org/en/ . . . . . #thetakingofjakelivingston #goodreads #Amazon #kindle #Bookbub #StoryGraph #iheartbooks #readingisfundamental #book #books #readallthebooks #booklover #bookworm #bookwrym #bookstagram #bookstagrammer #booksofinstagram #booksbooksbooks #read #reading #readersofinstagram #readmorebooks #readyourbooks #readabook #readallthebooks #authorsofinstagram #writersofinstagram #booksarelife https://www.instagram.com/p/CjfoTvWMf1J/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Author: @ryan_souflee Publication Date: July 13th, 2021 Hii, here with another book review. I saw this book like 2 or 3 months before it was going to be released. I guess some people on Booktok (the TikTok side for book lovers) got an advance because they were promoting it far before the release. I was excited; I love paranormal stories, and this was no exception. This book pulled me in immediately I haven’t read through a book this quickly in so long; it felt good. I loved the main character Jake Livingston, I found him to be very relatable. Although I didn’t go to a predominately white school, I understood how he felt—Being excluded, and bullied, and feeling like everyone; even your family doesn’t understand what you’re going through. Jake is shy and quiet and must learn to speak up for himself, which unravels out throughout the book. The point of view of the book switches between Jake and Sawyer a deceased character. There aren’t many books about black characters dealing with their sexualities and living in an area where being gay and black is hard for you. I like how Ryan Douglas sheds light on a topic very few speak on. I thoroughly enjoyed The Taking of Jake Livingston, I’m a big fan of the supernatural, and Ghost Whisperer was my favorite show. This book shows that seeing the afterlife isn’t all it’s cracked up to be. I will admit, I was going to post this review last year—When I finished the book, but life got in the way. Now as previously stated this year I’m going to try my best with book reviews. The next few reviews are going to be a part of a book series review! Thank you for reading and I’ll catch you next time! . . . . . . . . . . . . #love #followback #instagramers #tweegram #photooftheday #20likes #amazing #smile #follow4follow #like4like #look #books #book #read #reading #reader #page #pages #paper #instagood #kindle #nook #thetakingofjakelivingston #paranormal https://www.instagram.com/p/CYZu-aoPC6A/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

I decided to give the #scbwiartober challenge a try. I’m going out of order and doing which ever one inspires me when I sit down to work. Yesterday I did the tea leaf reading from #harrypotter and today I painted some leaves 🍁 printed them and cut them out. This was one of my favorite things to do with my preschoolers in the fall. I’ve also started the #spookyreads for #spookyseason with #thetakingofjakelivingston by #ryandouglass. This #book is giving me all the creeps and I’m only halfway through. I have no idea how it’s going to end and it’s driving me nuts and keeping me #reading #bookstagram #drawing #bookworm #collage #booknerd #painting #bookworm #oolychunkies #bookish #scbwiart #scbwi #bibliophile #leafprints #bookaddict #thegrim #bookaholic #tessomancy #bibliotherapy #art #artistsoninstagram #learningtoillustrate https://www.instagram.com/p/CUvZ5ttrcXD/?utm_medium=tumblr

#BookReview The Taking of Jake Livingston by Ryan Douglass This YA horror/thriller packs an emotional punch and gives you a little bit of queer romance. However you should be aware this short book is packed full of trigger warnings - school shootings, domestic violence, body horror, racism and homophobia to name a few. That being said I think Douglass handled all of these issues with a deft hand. Alternating between the perspective of Blacc teenage medium Jake and deceased white school shooter Sawyer was sometimes jarring. Jake sometimes frustrated me with his hesitancy and lack of confidence but I was always rooting for him. While seeing how Sawyer ultimately devolved into such an act of violence was horrifying, it was done in a way that you understood what led him to that point but you never felt sympathetic or that it was justified. This book also had some amazing side characters I went from hating older brother Benji in the middle of the book to really respecting him at the end. Oh and the budding romance between Allister and Jake was so well done. This wasn't a light book there's darkness and terror in it but it ultimately was satisfying. 4.5/5 [ID: The Taking of Jake Livingston by Ryan Douglass on my #HocusPocus pillow.] #TheTakingOfJakeLivingston #YA #Horror #GetOut #SpookyReads #LGTBQStories #nerdymama #nerdybooks #booknerd #blackgirlsread #ComingOfAge #MRDRC21 #POCbookstagrammer #Bookstagram https://www.instagram.com/p/CT3g52XrLpX/?utm_medium=tumblr

𝔹𝕝𝕠𝕘 𝕋𝕠𝕦𝕣-- Did you grow up with any scary stories? When I was a kid, my dad told my brother and I that there was a witch who lived below him in his apartment complex. If kids were loud, she would come up and eat them. Needless to say we were always afraid to make too much noise. 😂 I am so excited for my blog tour stop featuring The Taking of Jake Livingston by @ryan_souflee hosted through @tbrbeyondtours I adored this creepy, prescient novel about a black, gay teen doing his best to navigate a mostly white high school along with the small convenience of seeing the dead. If you loved Goosebumps, The Sixth Sense, or just want a novel tackling big issues in a respectful way, Douglass' debut is a must read! Head on over to the blog to see my full spoiler review and check out the synopsis for The Taking of Jake Livingston below! SYNOPSIS Sixteen-year-old Jake Livingston sees dead people everywhere. But he can't decide what's worse: being a medium forced to watch the dead play out their last moments on a loop or being at the mercy of racist teachers as one of the few Black students at St. Clair Prep. Both are a living nightmare he wishes he could wake up from. But things at St. Clair start looking up with the arrival of another Black student—the handsome Allister—and for the first time, romance is on the horizon for Jake.   Unfortunately, life as a medium is getting worse. Though most ghosts are harmless and Jake is always happy to help them move on to the next place, Sawyer Doon wants much more from Jake. In life, Sawyer was a troubled teen who shot and killed six kids at a local high school before taking his own life. Now he's a powerful, vengeful ghost and he has plans for Jake. Suddenly, everything Jake knows about dead world goes out the window as Sawyer begins to haunt him. High school soon becomes a different kind of survival game—one Jake is not sure he can win. #tbrandbeyondtours #tbrandbeyond #thetakingofjakelivingston #ryandouglass #blogtour #bookreview #newbooks #bipoc #blackauthors #blackstories https://www.instagram.com/p/CRdYiiPrb4B/?utm_medium=tumblr

Many thanks to @PRHInternational for e-copy via NetGalley, in exchange for an honest review. The Taking of Jake Livingston by Ryan Douglass Publication Date : July 13th 2021 Publisher : #GPPutnamsSons @putnambooks Genre : LGBTQ / YA / Paranormal Pages : 244 Ratings : ⭐⭐⭐⭐ It was well written YA paranormal with horror elements that revolved around Jack’s ability to see ghosts and his fight against evil ghost. The story was about school shooting trauma, abusive childhood, bullying, homophobia, colour and sex discrimination, parental negligence, sadisms, revenge, sociopathy, depression, friendship, coming out of shell and, fight against wrong and evil. Jake was amazing throughout the book. His development was great and I loved how he learned to speak his mind, took control of his life and understood his family better. There were lots of heavy topic dealt. It made the story touching and thought provoking. Jake’s ability of seeing ghosts was interesting to read. Most of action sequence happened in astral projection. Romance provided much needed relief in this heavy story. Overall, The Taking of Jake Livingston was well written, atmospheric, thought-provoking and emotive YA paranormal. I recommend this if you like, stories with horror/ paranormal element heavy theme great character development LGBTQ story complex plot astral projection scenes QOTD: Which recent LGBTQ book you enjoyed most? #TheTakingofJakeLivingston #RyanDouglass #paranormal #YA #horror #lgbtq #lagbtqread #lgbtqbook #BooksTeacupandReviews #bookreviewblog #bookrec #Indianbookstagram #IndianBookBlogger #bookreviewercommunity #bookcommunity #bookgram #bookstagramfeature #bookishlovegroups #PenguinRandomHouse #YAbook #YAreader #igread #partner #ad #ipreview via @preview.app (at Ahmedabad, India) https://www.instagram.com/p/CSZhdAmID7b/?utm_medium=tumblr
