My Review of The 100 Girlfriends Who Really, Really, Really, Really, Really Love You

Well, I got a couple of open slots for the Fall 2023 anime season. I’ll choose this random series without looking into what it is and why it is. How bad could it possibly be?

Between the time he was eight months old and the time he graduated from middle school, Rentaro Aijou has been turned down by “girls he likes” a grand total of 100 times. The night following his middle school graduation, Rentaro went to a shrine and prayed that when he enters high school, he will get a girlfriend. That’s when he meets God himself.

As one does in this occasion.

God tells Rentaro that he will not only get a girlfriend that is destined to be his true soulmate, he will have 100 girlfriends destined to be his true soulmate. Unless you are Genghis Khan or a main character on Tenchi Muyo, I call bullshit. God explains that the day Rentaro was born, he kinda dropped the ball while filling out paperwork. He accidentally wrote 100 soulmates instead of 1. To make things worse, if he turns down any of these soulmates, they’ll die suddenly. So, this is a matter of life and death for 100 girls.

On the very first day of high school, Rentaro bumps into two of these soulmates, Hakari Hanazono and Karane Inda. A pink-haired girl with big tits and a blonde tsundere. Of course, they are! All three are struck by cupid’s drunken, polygamist arrow. Them being a couple is kinda like with Girlfriend Girlfriend with the exception of them all not living together. Heads up, this is under the comedy genre. So, expect a lot of clumsy slapstick here! Well, Rentaro has met 2 of his soulmates. Throughout the series, he meets three other soulmates. A girl named Shizuka who communicates through lines from her favorite novel. Then there’s Kusuri who is a bit of an absent-minded scientist who occasionally transforms from curvy beauty to a Lolita. And then there’s Nano Eiai (pronounced A.I.) who is as monotone as it gets. If you name your kid that, what the hell do you expect?

Before I continue, I’m going to take a couple of shots in the dark here. I’m guessing that this series will only be 11-13 episodes long. Rentaro will only meet 5-13 girls in this span. And the chances of a sequel will be 15% chance.

BETWEEN THE SUB AND THE DUB: No lie, these were the words when it was announced this anime was getting an English dub. “This flaming garbage is getting an English dub?” Hmm, if Brina Palencia is allowed to do Crunchyroll dubs, I say she’s going to play Eiai. Only by the mere fact that she has a reputation for playing monotone girls. But that was something I used to see happen 15 years ago, I doubt it’s still true that Palencia plays nothing but monotone characters anymore. I gotta get with the times as Eiai is played by someone completely different. As for the sub, a mix of newer and well-known seiyuus. This is Wataru Katou’s second main role and seems to be relatively new. I thought he did a really good job as Rentaro. Okay, here’s the cast.

*Eiai is played by Asami Seto (known for Raphtalia on Shield Hero, Mai on Bunny Girl Senpai, CZ on Overlord, Miyoko on Food Wars, and Mado on Tokyo Ghoul)

*Kusuri is played by Ayaka Asai (known for Lisa on Fire Force)

*Karane is played by Ariel Graham (known for Tia on Overlord and Leivinia on Index III)

*Shizuka is played by Sara Ragsdale (known for Saikawa on Miss Kobayashi, Young Dabi on My Hero Academia, Saya on Dagashi Kashi)

*Eiai is played by Cassie Ewulu

*Kusuri is played by Lindsay Sheppard (known for Aria on Pokemon XY and Mia on Love Live Nijigasaki)

SHIPPING: After viewing the first episode, I just see Rentaro as one of those harmless anime perverts. He’s like Brock from Pokemon, he’s just going to ask the girl out and anything that happens afterwards, whatever. And for a while throughout the series, I’m inclined to agree with the same sentiment. I don’t recall seeing him get giddy about fondling Hakari’s breasts or anything dirty like that.

In fact, he tries to be chivalrous to the girls. Rentaro loves someone like Karane despite being the textbook definition of a tsundere. Rentaro helped Shizuka out of her shell and then-some. He showed Eiai that there’s more to life than just numbers. And Kusuri is no longer alone now that Rentaro is in her life. Although, things do get a little raunchy and go beyond holding hands. Rentaro doesn’t play favorites like the other modern harems, he loves all of his girlfriends the same and for some reason, the girlfriends just go along with Rentaro adding more girlfriends.

In short, every girl is best girl to him. But we have to admit that Hakari’s family has the upper-hand due to a couple of firsts. Hakari is the first girlfriend and the first to be a “bride”. And then Mama Hahari…um…Yeah, it’s best to assume that Hakari and Hahari got the upper-hand here.

WTF MOMENT: French-kissing Vice Principal.

That’s right. In an anime where Hakari has sick fantasies and we have a girl like Kusuri, who wears diapers and is an 18-year-old in the body of an 8-year-old, the Vice-Principal tainted everything.

That’s it. That’s what made my soul died.

ENDING: In harem animes, there’s bound to be any number of objections from friends and family members. Mostly family! Would your parents agree to you being in a polygamist relationship? Hakari is told by her mother to end it. Under normal circumstances, yes, that would be the case. But in this anime, Hakari would die. But of course, only Rentaro knows that factoid. If Hakari does die due to break-up, at least she went out in style. She was able to compete in a bouquet toss event that resulted in her and Rentaro dressed in wedding gear and having their pictures taken.

Hakari’s mother Hahari shuts her daughter up in her room in supreme lockdown. It’s a big house filled with security personnel, a guard dog, trip-laser security, and a cat. The cat’s there doing what cats do. Rentaro and the other girlfriends break in to try and save Hakari. With the help of everyone, Rentaro was able to make it to Hakari’s room. But all in vain as Hakari’s room was also attached to the security system and Rentaro was caught. We then learn about Hahari and why she’s being overprotective of her daughter. Hahari fell in love with a terminally-sick boy at age 13. Hahari decides to have his baby. She gives birth to Hakari and later the boy dies. Hahari later regrets the decision she made and doesn’t want Hakari to make a big mistake with a boy like she did.

And then Mama Hahari and Rentaro got the spark and AW SHIT, SHE’S ONE OF THE 100 GIRLFRIENDS!

Hahari shook it off and continued to test both Rentaro and Karane on this unordinary relationship with a lie detector. It showed that despite Karane’s severe tsundere attitude, she loves Rentaro. Rentaro is shown to love all of his girlfriends. And that Karane is somewhere in the A-cup range. But the silliness comes to a grinding halt when Hakari is on the ledge of her second-story bedroom window ready to end it all. Rentaro ends up saving her by falling off the ledge with her into the fountain. At least they’re not dead. Hahari gives up her grasp on Hakari and all seems to be forgiven with a hot bath, pajama party, and Rentaro possibly losing his virginity. Oh come on, I doubt that this anime would go so far as to…

OH, HOLY FUCK! THAT’S WHAT HAPPENED! RENTARO FUCKED HIS FIRST GIRLFRIEND’S MOTHER! HE’S A LITERAL MOTHER FUCKER!

And we go along with the final episode as if we did not see him fucking her brains out. The slumber party went along with usual and unusual moments including: playing cards, spying on Rentaro as he bathes, random acts of lesbianism, a spooky ghost in the window, and other silly shenanigans. We get more serious moments when we’ve got Hahari feel guilty as it feels like she’s betraying her first love (Hakari’s dead father). Rentaro being pure of heart accepts all of her baggage and seals it with a kiss. And then the ghost of Hahari’s first love (Hakari’s dead father) appears before Rentaro.

As one does! While he was quite defiant about Rentaro dating this guy’s first love and daughter, he sees Rentaro is a pure…wrong words to use about a guy who just lost his virginity to this guy’s baby-mama. Pure enough. Ghost dad approves and passes on. Now, I know what you’re thinking. Rentaro’s first 5 girlfriends are easy to see as they all go to the same school as him. How is Rentaro going to see his sixth, Mama Hahari? Simple. Hahari buys the school. Yeah, the episode ends with her announcing she bought the school. We also see four girls that Rentaro passes by that could possibly be girlfriends #7-11. Pfft. I’ve seen that happen before in season finales. Keijo had an ending like that where we saw all these new characters for one second and then the series never came back.

Okay, let’s see if what I said at the beginning of this review still stands.

*This series was 12 episodes long. I was correct that it was only going to last between 11 and 13. *By series end, Rentaro has officially gotten 6 girlfriends. Even if we add the 5 girls we saw at the end of episode 12, that would equal 11 girls. So, I was right about the number of girlfriends. *My 15% chance of a sequel guess was proven wrong immediately as this got the green light for a second season when the season one finale aired.

Shit, this series was something else. I can honestly say there were a lot of moments in 100 Girlfriends I would have never expected to happen. In a normal harem anime, there’d be a lot of fighting between the girls, the first girl might get a kiss, and the anime would end there so you would have to go to the manga to know what happens next. Or, wait nearly 30 years to see proof of a harem like with Tenchi Muyo. But we all must remember that we are in the 2020’s. If this fucking Goddamn decade has taught me anything, anime has gone above and beyond the norm here. We’re in the decade of Interspecies Reviewers and Redo of Healer!

This anime blew away everything that you’ve seen when it comes to harems. Rentaro has kissed every girl. He is loyal to all of his girlfriends and thensome. And unlike a lot of other harems, he lost his virginity by the season’s end and not to the first girl. I gotta give credit where credit is due in this department. And by the looks of the manga, Rentaro is still loved and quadrupled girl intake. Last I saw, he has over 20 girlfriends. The creator and artists are determined to make the 100 girlfriends thing happen whether the anime continues or not. I gotta respect that kind of tenacity. I am beyond curious to see how Rentaro can possibly handle over 20 girlfriends. So, I am definitely looking forward to a second season for this anime.

And if you want to see a harem done right for the 2020’s, get your ass to Crunchyroll and watch this series.

FINAL THOUGHT: If Rentaro never existed, this anime would be a Yuri anime starring these two. Prove me wrong.

The results for chil-chil’s BL Award 2024 are out!

I didn't vote for all the categories, so I'm only gonna talk about the ones I did vote for. Let's see:

Comics: I voted for His Little Amber. It got 2nd! I'm still waiting for the cast reveal for the BLCD! It's been 2 months since they announced a BLCD, but the cast has not been revealed yet. I'm anxious to know!!

Series: I voted for Fake Fact Lips Break because I adore them. It got 10th. The 1st place was Given, which I'm not mad about <3

Emotional: I voted for Kono te wo Hanasanaide 2 and it got 1st!! I'm happy. I love them!

Fetish: I voted for Minami-kun Wants to be Teased by that Voice, because obviously I have a voice fetish! I believe every seiyuu fan can relate to that. This BLCD was SO erotic *__*. It got 7th. The 1st place was Sex Drop 2 which I actually haven't listened to yet ^^;; I need to.

Next Generation: I voted for Kitayama kun & Minamiya kun because they're cute. Waiting to listen to the BLCD. It got 4th.

BLCD: I voted for Futari Asobi because Chiaki was so so SO freaking cute there. SO CUTE. Sadly it's not in the Top 10. The 1st place was Takara no Biidoro, which I'm also happy about. Ryouta and Yukke were really great there.

Seiyuu: I obviously voted for my beloved Chiaki. I also voted for Ryouta as my 2nd option. Chiaki got 6th which is pretty impressive. Ryouta wasn't in the Top 10. The 1st place was Soma.

And honestly (and I have to be honest here) I'm kinda over him getting 1st place almost every year. he's won a couple of years in a row: 2024, 2023, 2022, 2021 (2nd) and 2020. It reached the point where I can no longer listen to his BLCDs. I really think he's too overrated. Sorry Soma. I used to enjoy his roles, but lately I feel that he sounds the same in every role. I'm over it. :/

Impressive that Makonyan got 9th when he's only done 2 new BLCDs this year (the rest were sequels). He's powerful alright! Well deserved. Hopefully he'll do many new ones in the future. I also love that Yukke got 7th, so the two Kobayashi are very close to each other ^^

Translator’s note: I found this CD to be incredibly informative and interesting because it really does teach us more about the Demon World and its traditions. I genuinely had a lot of fun hearing them talk about the three different household’s various customs when it comes to parties and ceremonies. :3 Rejet should definitely make more drama CDs like these which combine light-hearted comedy with lore.

You enter the room. 

Carla: …Oi, you. Weren’t you the one asking where she was earlier?

Kou: Oopsie~ (・ω<) (2) …I mean, where’d be the fun in spoiling the surprise beforehand? Besides, having me introduce her as my idol persona works way better from a commercial point of view! …I guess you could say that’s just how things work in this branch? 

Carla: …I do not understand. 

Laito: Well, Kou’s just shallow like that. It’s nothing for you to be worried about, Carla. …Well then, Bitch-chan, you can take a seat right next ・to・me~ Come here? Nfu~ 

Kou: Haah…? You’re the last person I want to hear that from. Also don’t you dare steal her from underneath my nose the very second she walks in!

Shuu: Oi…Both of you are getting way off-topic…

Kou: Ah…Whoops, my bad~ Slip of the tongue~ 

Yuma: …Ah, my bad. I guess I shouldn’t bother with this guy and just keep goーー Uwah!? Sow!? When did ya get here!? 

Kou: I called her over while the two of you were wasting your time arguing. 

Yuma: I guess you’re not wrong. …Anyway, let’s finally get to business. 

Carla: A menu centered around a wedding reception, was it? Well…In short, we should simply make something which you’d find served at the celebration? 

Shuu: And since this woman over here will be our taste-tester, we’ll have to base ourselves on this world’s standards. ーー Oi, you. What are wedding receptions like over here? 

You explain. 

Laito: Hmー So you gather around the table with close relatives? 

Kou: The food is often a mixture between traditional and Western cuisine!? W-What does that mean? 

You elaborate. 

Kanato: It has to be enjoyable to eat for the grandparents as well, you say? …So we actually have to make a wide variety of dishes? 

Carla: Scratch that.

Shuu: Agreed. 

Laito: Yeah…

Kou: I feel like trying to overachieve will only hurt us in the end. 

Yuma: Gotta agree that I don’t get the point of it. 

You frown. 

Kou: Hmー Now don’t look so troubled. For starters, we do have somewhat of a solid idea of what a wedding ceremony is like here in the human world. In short, what’s important is that the food conveys the feeling that you’re trying to please everyone to the best of your ability right? So if we manage to achieve that with our menu, it should leave you satisfied, right? 

Laito: Well, since we’ve got five Vampires and one Founder here, why don’t we try adding the element of human hospitality to our world’s dishes? 

Yuma: I mean, she’s the only one who’s gonna try it, so we can just make some minor adjustments to our cuisine to better suit her tastes, right?

Carla: Oi, please do not group us together simply because we both hail from the Demon World. Founders are their own distinct group. Obviously, our culture and customs are different as well. 

Yuma: Do ya founders even have wedding ceremonies? 

Carla: What do you take us for? Of course we do!

Kanato: Then teach us what kind of dishes are served at those. We only know the ways of our own family after all. 

Carla: Haah…While I do not like having to expose our culture to you fiends…It is for those sweet, sweet points. I have no other choice. Allow me to teach you. 

Kou: ‘Hooray’, thanks. 

Yuma: (mumbles) …Just tell us already instead of beatin’ ‘round the bush.

Carla: First of all, our celebration lasts three days and three nights in total. 

Kanato: …A whole three days and nights!? 

Carla: We congratulate the bride and groom through a ‘never-ending’ banquet!

Laito: No…But if it lasts three days and three nights, it isn’t endless, is it? It will end at some point.

Carla: …

Shuu: Laito…Keep those unnecessary remarks to yourself. 

Laito: Ah, sorry~ Couldn’t help myself~ Nfu~

Carla: Anyway, during those three days and nights, one must never have an empty plate. Once something has been eaten, it will immediately be replaced by a fresh batch. 

Kanato: So you could keep on eating, but the amount of food will never get less? 

Carla: Exactly. It is meant to symbolize that the celebrations will never come to an end. 

Kanato: That sounds wonderful…You can keep on eating and eating, yet never run out…Of course, that goes for the desserts as well, right!? 

Laito: Once again, it’s only for three days and three nights so it won’t last foreーー

Yuma covers his mouth. 

*Rustle rustle*

Laito: Mmphー!? Mmh…!!? 

Yuma: …You’re doin’ this on purpose, aren’t ya!? Keep yer damn mouth shut, seriously! You should know that guy is a tickin’ time bomb!

Kanato: What was that you said~? 

Yuma: Ahー Um…Well…Y-Ya know…T-There’s this legendary mushroom often referred to as ‘time bomb’ (3) which we found growing over at Karlheinz-sama’s castle, ya see!

Kanato: Oh, I see. That’s news to me. 

Carla: Oi, you two! If you refuse to take my story seriously, then…

Carla begins to charge an attack again.

Kou: C-Come on, calm down…! I-If not…You know, think about those points…!

Carla: …Tsk…Ugh! 

Yuma: …Anyway, we get the gist ‘bout it bein’ long with lots of food to feast on, but tell us somethin’ ‘bout the actual food itself! 

Carla: One of our traditional dishes is called the Founder’s special ‘Four Species Pudding’.

Carla: I believe the dish would work very well when paired with dry cured ham.

Carla: Of course, a luxurious kind such as Iberico ham. I’m sure they would go well together.

Kou: However, that’s something you came up with just now and not the traditional version, right?

Carla: …

Kou: Okay, let’s go to the next one!

Carla: You’ve heard enough already? We have plenty more traditional dishes. I would not mind telling you about them. 

Shuu: We’ve heard enough.

Shuu: ーー Oi. Mr. Violent and Mr. Annoying. How about you guys?

Kou: Are you calling me annoying? Geez, how rude! …Oh well, I’ll let it slide. We’re half Vampires, so we’ve never had to organize such an event.

Kanato: No parties or such either…?

Yuma: Aah…? Party? Did we?

Kou: I don’t think we’ve ever held any official ones but you know…Remember how we held a potato party the other day because we harvested way too many from your garden? 

Yuma: Ahー When we made all sorts of potato dishes? That counts as a party as well? 

Kou: I’m not sure but I guess it kind of does when you think about it…?

Shuu: A potato party?

Kou: Exactly! All of dishes down to the dessert were made using fresh potatoes! Even though everything was made from the same main ingredient, it never felt repetitive thanks to Ruki-kun’s amazing cooking skills! Right, Yuma-kun?

Yuma: Yeah! I put blood, sweat and tears into growin’ those taters so seein’ others enjoy them really made me feel like it was worth it!

Carla: …Sounds shabby.

Yuma: Haah!?

Shuu: Exactly. Who serves potatoes at a party?

Kou: Hey, don’t say that! I guess rich kids wouldn’t know, but it’s common all around the world!

Laito: Hmー I mean, sure? No point in fussing over the small details. Let’s just say that’s how the cookie crumbles over at the Mukami’s. Nfu~ 

Kanato: I suppose there’s big differences even amongst fellow Vampires. At our house, parties are much more grand and lavish. 

Shuu: Thanks to the Old Man who loves imitating human traditions. 

Yuma: In other words, you don’t have yer own traditional dishes? 

Kanato: Hm…For us, it would be…No, we do. I remember. …You know, the one Mother would make at every party.

Laito: Ahー I just remembered…Now that you mention it, I guess that would be the Sakamaki Household representative dish. …Hehe.

Shuu: Ah…That thing.

Carla: …What was it? 

Laito: How should I put it…You wouldn’t really call it part of our culture. If I had to explain it, you could say it was specific to our house’s situation? 

Yuma: Oh come on! Just explain it to us already!? 

Carla: If you say A, you have to say B as well. Now stop beating around the bush and explain!

Kanato: At every party, our three mothers would compete over whoever could make the best dish. 

Laito: Yup, exactly. She had never once cooked in her life though, so she should have just given up.

Kanato: I don’t want to speak badly of Mother but…I’d rather not have to eat that dish ever again.

Laito: Ahー I feel like my mouth is sticking together just from remembering it. Hehe…

Kou: S-Stick together…?

Kanato: It was oddly slippery…and sometimes grainy… 

Yuma: Slippery? Grainy?

Shuu: Some parts were rock hard as well. Even though it barely tasted of anything overall, at times it’d suddenly hit you with a kick of spice…then at the end left you with a bitter aftertaste. 

Carla: What kind of dish was that…!? 

Laito: …Good question. 

Yuma: ‘Good question’!? But you ate it, right!? 

Kanato: We did not choose to eat it, we were forced to. 

Laito: Exactly! Besides, we wouldn’t have even realized it was food if we hadn’t been told to eat it!

Shuu: I was left wondering who had put their trash on the dinner plate. …Haah.

Kou: Ahー I’m kind of starting to feel bad for them.

Yuma: Yeah…I guess even rich kids…don’t always have it easy, huh? 

Shuu: I don’t need your pity. …So. What dish are we actually going to make now?

Kou: Hmー If we put together the traditional foods from all three of our households, we’ll end up with a dish which looks like trash, consists of four different types of meat accompanied by side of potatoes all of which have a slippery, grainy and sometimes rock hard texture with a kick of heat to it and bitter aftertaste…?  

Carla: Oi! You forgot about the dry cured ham!

Kou: Ah, right right. Add some dry cured ham in there as well. …The expensive kind made from iberico pork…

Carla: …Perfect!

Kanato: That sounds…revolting.

Shuu: Well, we need to ultimately make it appealing to this woman too. I guess we can just randomly put some flowers on top to make it look all bright and colorful? 

Laito: I didn’t expect such a well thought-out idea from you. Girls love everything cute and pretty after all! Nice thinking.

Yuma: I guess so. …Anyway, ya heard the guy. All ya need to do is eat the food we serve ya.

Laito: The concept of ‘normal’ is a tricky one to grasp, you see? It highly depends on the individual after all. …For example, you could walk around the manor stark naked and I would think it’s the most normal thing in the world. However, you wouldn’t feel the same way, would you? Nfu~

(1) Yuma uses the term 貧乏くじ or ‘binbou-kuji’ which literally means ‘poor lottery’. I assume they used some kind of lottery system like drawing straws or numbers to decide which students would be in the same group together. 

(2) Kou says ‘てへぺろ’ or ‘tehe pero’, which is a typical comical expression often seen in cartoons and manga consisting of a character winking while sticking out their tongue. → (・ω<) It’s often used when someone makes a mistake and tries to kind of cover it up. (or as a way to feign innocence/ignorance)

(3) Yuma referred to Kanato as プチ切れボーヤ which literally means ‘young lad which is easily irked’. I translated this as ‘ticking time bomb’, not realizing that he would then later try and make up a whole story about it. It has only been a couple days since Aikyan turned 30, but as I'm blasting her discography, why not share my favorite songs from this gifted vocal powerhouse.

(DISCLAIMER: This list is my personal opinion. My decisions are based on overall music components (arrangement, lyrics, composition, etc.) as well as interests. Do not be offended if your favorite is not mentioned. Once again, "my" "personal" "opinion". ) With that out of the way, let's get into my picks!

6. Holiday!! (syzygy)

Not gonna lie; this is quite a catchy song coming from last year's EP. The pop rock vibe fits Kyan's energy just enough to leave an impression. There is a nice breakdown before the final chorus that highlights her other strong suit: hip-hop; although it isn't as prominent as in "Gimme the mic, gimme the light". Still, I prefer Holiday!! over that due to better arrangement, but by a slight margin.

5. ゆらゆらら (NO LIFE CODE)

If there is one thing Aikyan pulls off well, it is putting enough effort in her vocal performances to convince listeners to groove along. My favorite from her [NO LIFE CODE] EP, " ゆらゆらら" provides just the right amount of bop and catchy lyrics to shuffle back and forth after hard or depressing times. It is such an infectious melodic ride you cannot possibly resist.

4. Border Rain (Gradation Collection)

I'm a sucker for ballads, whether or not it has "power". For as long as I listened to all of Aqours seiyuus' solo discographies, Aikyan leaves the most impression on me with her powerful, soul-driven vocals. Thus, I had to include this song, which repeatedly continues to throw punches to my feels every time I hear it. The arrangement compliments her vocals to a point it amplifies the tone of the song. However, it isn't as memorable as #3; another ballad with an MV that captures Aikyan in a much more atmospheric level.

3. 空は誰かのものじゃない (Gradation Collection)

Used as an insert/ED song for the anime "Farewell, My Dear Cramer", "空は誰かのものじゃない" ( roughly translates to "The Sky Doesn't Belong to Anyone") seamlessly blends Aikyan's vocal flexibility along with a beautiful score that could leave you in tears (although I haven't done so yet).

2. Sunset Bicycle (Tough Heart)

Of course, I'd put this high on my list. IT'S SO CHILL AND LAIDBACK, like riding a bicycle towards a heartwarming sunset after a long day. The first time hearing it, I was so out of it just from Kyan's softer yet sensual soulful vocals. The lyrics are also bilingual so forgive me if I immediate--

HEY IT DOESN'T MATTER...🎵

(I can't help it. This song's an earworm).

Anyways, this is her strongest song out of her second EP; definitely worth listening to if you are in the mood for a bit of J-Pop/R&B flare.

Usually, I would have an Honorable Mention, but the only track out of her whole career that barely makes it in is actually one of the most unusual songs to have the most nonsensical lyrics cross my mind.

I kid you not. This song is so insane, in arrangement and lyrics that I had to sadly omit it for being a bit too...wild? I have no hate for any of her songs but this was the closest to making my list. If you're willing to subject yourself to only words ending in "ru", be my guest.

With that out of the way, let me reveal my #1 pick.

1. Moonlight Balcony (Gradation Collection)

How is this not a collab with Furirin? Riddle me this, Toy's Factory and Purple One Star.

Everything is just stellar with this song.

The score? 60s lounge that I can imagine Kyan in a high-class bar just having a cocktail with Furi.

OH, RIGHT. I FORGOT. THE LYRICS.

The song, according to these lyrics, gives me the impression this is about getting drunk and just wandering around the city in the middle of the night in your own damn mind; having fun under the influence of alcohol. It's so fucking good I can't help but want to mash this with　「 シンデレラタイム」 , but the BPMs are so not even close to be done without clever editing.

(..and no, she literally mentions Cinderella; which is why I'm desperate for this mashup but that's for another time).

The intro portion of the score sucks you into a drunken euphoria and into a whirlwind of wonder and bliss. It may not be the best song to portray her vocals, but sometimes, you don't need a lot to convey this kind of feeling. Thus, I consider Moonlight Balcony my favorite song from Aika Kobayashi.

sadly I haven’t really been listening to a whole lot that isn’t UtaPri or DMMd-related lately but sure I’ll do the thing!

First up I have to link this particular animatic video someone made for Takahashi Hiroki’s “Blessings”

This is a really lovely animatic that I stumbled on one day and immediately lost my mind. It’s sung by Koujaku’s seiyuu, and the translated lyrics are on CC. It’s so sweet and well-done and suits them perfectly and I’m bawling again.

“Angel”, by VERTUEUX, the song for Mink and Aoba from the drama CD. The final round of songs for all the LIs appeared on the Engage+ment CD, so they’re basically the best ending love songs as I see it. And while I love Scarlet (a lot, as the more perceptive may have noticed), Angel has been coming up a lot on shuffle lately, so I have to include it. I love the singer’s raspy, powerful voice and the way he delivers the lyrics so much.

Miyano Mamoru is pretty much my favorite solo singer and has been for quite some time now. This is “Encore”, the song he did for the closing credits of the UtaPri theatrical concert film, Maji LOVE Kingdom. In addition to voicing and singing Ichinose Tokiya, he always did the opening songs for the anime as well as for the first couple of VNs. Sadly, we probably won’t be getting any more seasons of the anime, but at least we have more movies to look forward to.

“Magic” is the video I like to show to people when I want them to see what Mamoru can do live. This is from his EXCITING! live concert tour (he names all his tours with an active gerund - GENERATING, BLAZING, etc.), and they make amazing use of video and effects to really make the performance, well, magic... He’s just an incredible performer and all around entertainer on top of being an amazing singer. And, you know, doing that seiyuu thing.

And I was going to include a fifth song here, but tumblr has apparently decided I’m not allowed to. I’ll just put the link here instead: “The Bathing Suit She Wore”, from Emmet Otter’s Jugband Christmas, was stuck in my head ALL DAY the other day, which is surely indicative of some kind of mental madness. Maybe the tonal whiplash was just too strong. Anyway, enjoy! (This is a cover version from a tribute show, which is really mind-blowing to me.)

its a modern masterpiece and I am glad that the studio incharge seems equally as passionate as we fans are for this adaptation.Ĭancel culture however, has a way of ruining things so allow me to address a couple of aspects being used to fan the HATE WARS.ġ)He may look like an ugly bastard straight out of hentai in his previous life but there is more to Rudy than meets the eye. Hell, I believe it Should BE THE BENCHMARK anime due to the sheer potential it has in all forms: beautiful Art, immersive story, well written characters. Mushoku Tensei is truly a benchmark good Isekai anime. Story is where mushoku tensei really excels it goes to different tangents from a very simple premise without making it feel odd the main goal of MC was not decided at reincarnation like IMMA DEFEAT DEMON LORD or anything its always been down to earth like, I just gotta earn money for my best friends sylphy’s tuition, i gotta help eris get home, it's my responsibility as her teacher and most importantly I just need to live my life properly and without regrets (that is basically the full title of this anime). VA is well done the switching between old rudy and young rudy is done so well that even tho they are distinctly different we always know they are the same person the other characters have great established seiyuus as well. Upbeat but still medieval,the kind that made us admire the unskippable opening since it is also filled with additional Art. The music is easily so creative it is an all time classic like bebop or champloo. People (and waifus) ,Rudy the main Focus, is a complex and flawed character who you aren't supposed to like (actually you pity the guy more often than not)but sometimes he can be a real bro. Great characters, each easily Distinguishable, the Girls are not in the anime just be waifus and are actual Animations in battles are crisp and almost no recognizable 3D is ever on screen due to clever camera placement. Gorgeous Art i mean real beautiful, most of this can be used as 4K art assets for AAA video games, Mushoku tensei doesn't stop giving us new desktop screensavers in every freaking frame. I mean c'mon mushoku tensei is So good that you don't even have to be a isekai fan to love it Of all the 8 finalists in Genkai's tournament, Chinpo was the only one whose abilities/skills were never revealed (even Kuroda's proficiencies with knives were seen in the anime and mentioned in the manga), though he seems to be a practitioner of kung fu.Mushoku tensei is great, probably even the best anime of this year.Chinpo is not seen or referenced again after his defeat. While Shorin emerged injured after the fight and commented that he was just barely able to defeat Chinpo, his statement isn't necessarily reliable due to his true persona as Rando. It is unknown if Chinpo was slain or merely incapacitated. Rando, in his Shorin form, defeated Chinpo in the first round of Genkai's tournament. He is established as coming from China, being one of the few (if not only) human foreigners in this series.Ĭhinpo's motivation for entering the tournament was never revealed. He was considered powerful by normal human standards, as evidenced by his ability to pass Genkai's initial tests, but his techniques are never revealed. Chinpo was a round, martial artist wanderer with a long, curled mustache.

SO! Just found out Maaya Sakamoto will voicing freakin Akito! in Furuba 2019. Honestly she is perfect for the job. Kudos for her! You know what the cherry on top of that would be? If Suzuken can voice Kureno and they have the: "DON'T YOU DARE LEAVE ME!" scene together and I can die of happiness cuz y'know why NOT! FYI for people who didn't read the manga... its not a happy nor romantic scene. But ... I just want Suzuken and Maaya to have that scene... together... and possibly get teased by their co-seiyuus. 😏

why read Full Metal Daemon Muramasa? what are it's pros/cons? (I'm looking for more vns to read outside of TYPEMOON properties)

I've done a couple answers like this, but I always love answering from a slightly different angle each time!

pros:

one of the most well thought out geopolitical situations in any vn, no joke

do you like Heaven's Feel and UBW? you'll probably enjoy this a lot

Minato Kageaki is one of the most charmingly awkward vn protags out there. his mental state makes a lot more sense as you get some aspects of his past revealed in later routes, but I personally put him up next to Shirou on my vn protag tier list

despite what you might have heard, it's very explicitly a disavowal of both european and japanese fascism, specifically featuring both as distinct entities. Narahara strikes me as one of those oldschool Japanese communists who is largely disillusioned with party politics, but still genuinely believes in what he says

yes, that last point means it's not a pro-Japanese story. in fact, both Hanachirasu and Muramasa are written specifically to explain the decay at the center of fascism, even in "the most ideal conditions"

to follow up on the last point, it's even more specifically a deliberate subversion of "Japanese Empire fiction" like, for a recent example, Attack on Titan. it uses a lot of the same shorthands, but to form a pointed critique of the "united Asia, led by Japan" philosophy

Narahara is a master of his craft, both emotionally and technically

Kanae and Ichijou are incredible female characters. I won't spoil either of them too much, but Ichijou is a direct Kamen Rider homage and could be described as "genderbent Shirou, going through Heaven's Feel"

the music is gorgeous, composed by an art/prog rock musician as a mix of traditional japanese folk music, rock, and 2000s electronic

the story is easily 70 hours of fun long

there is nothing like muramasa and there will never be anything like muramasa again. full stop. it's an industry darling basically beloved by everyone who works in vns, like one of those cult classics that all your favorite directors love

Minato Kageaki shares a seiyuu with Angra Mainyu

to this day one of the few stories I've ever seen that successfully explains the hero complex at the heart of fascism without diving into any sort of apologetics

this was drawn during the sweet spot where Namaniku ATK's art style was at its peak of strong shapes and bold colors. a visual feast with strong character design

an absolute treat if you have any genre savvy whatsoever for tokusatsu, mecha anime, and 80s-90s otaku culture in general

it's not unfair to say that FMDM has the soul, if not the body, of a Drakengard game.

fully animated fight scenes featuring jet powered samurai dueling at the speed of sound using demon armor powered by their body heat

cons:

there is a big noncon warning on this one. a Big noncon warning. this is a story about terrible people convincing themselves they're doing the right thing, and the cycles of violence have been in motion for a long time.

do you like Misery? this vn has some of the most gut wrenching tragedy and psychological breaking of any story I've ever read, and this includes Proper Books that get academic acclaim.

you may want to skip through h scenes, and that's fine (and honestly I recommend it for some). they're standard fare for an eroge, especially a nitroplus one, but some drag on for too long, and some are pretty purposefully horrifying

there is a tonally dissonant Monkey Island style CYOA section. there are three actually. they all happen in Kanae's route. literally look up a guide. they aren't fun and were almost definitely mandated by Nitroplus to make it more of a game

there's some... weird lore handling. the gist is that the setting draws a lot from conspiracy theories for flavor, and one of these involves the Emishi being elven. this would be enough to raise a brow alone if Jews weren't stated to be the European equivalent, which makes it a bit more clear that he's actually doing a clumsy swing at parodying Christian fascist mysticism and its concept of the indigenous Japanese being Israelites. it's definitely strange, but it's not to any malicious end at least (and it comes off more as clumsy than offensive). it's one of those things you've gotta read for yourself and decide on.

what is up with the goddamn power-balancing in obey me?

this is a rant so it's a little messy but i have to talk about this (this is long but i'm currently not able to add a read more button,, i'll add one later when i can)

so i've finally made it to lesson 25 after so much struggle and i'm at the point of giving up

my cards are decently leveled (i have a couple at lv80-90 and some others at lv60) but it's never enough. i constantly have to use glowsticks (rainbow glowsticks specifically, the regular ones don't give the power boost i need) and even then sometimes it's only a 1 or 2 star clear

now i wouldn't mind this too much if only i could read the story another way but i fucking can't (there's only short clips on youtube and i really want to read the full story, at this point i'd hate to spoil myself)

i've put so much time and effort into this game and it's so sad to see that it hasn't payed off

whenever i ask for help people are like "just level up your cards" i fucking HAVE. but they're still not strong enough

it's not just me, too. i've seen tons of people on twitter, instagram, etc talking about how they can't win battles without using ridiculous amounts of glowsticks. it's a glaring problem in the community that the devs don't seem to acknowledge

the artists, writers and seiyuus put their heart and soul into this game and it's a shame that no one gets to see that because they're stuck on a specific lesson they can't get past

i really hope that they make battles easier because i doubt most players are ever going to make it to lesson 54

this is a rampant issue and i really want people to talk about it more seriously but i have such a small platform and i doubt anyone's gonna listen to me

and i know i shouldn't be so upset about this but i am. i so badly want to catch up with the main story but i'm unable to due to how hard the battles are (my team is roughly at 280k power without boosts. that should be more than enough to at least make it to lesson 40 but it isn't)

sorry for the rant but i really wanted to vent my frustrations about this. i know the devs will probably never change the difficulty but i at least had to try and talk about it

Alright, I need to make another post on Wonder Egg Priority, because this is one show I think you all need to be watching this season. I went into it knowing basically nothing about it; it’s an original anime, the marketing all played purposefully coy with what it even was, and I had no idea what I was getting into. And what I got feels like the love child of Kunihiko Ikuhara and Flip Flappers, with a little Naoko Yamada thrown in for good measure. It’s a surreal dream-world adventure that instantly and confidently dives headfirst into heavy themes and powerful character introspection in ways that I genuinely didn’t see coming. It’s certainly the best directed premiere of the season, and if the story can make good on all its promises, it may well end up being the outright best Winter 2021 anime period.

And you know what the wildest thing is? Its production team is almost completely new. The series director has a few credits here and there, but this is his first time directing a full-fledged anime series. The chief animation director’s only worked on a couple other Cloverworks productions prior to this. The original creator and scriptwriter hasn’t worked on anything before this: this is their first-ever anime production. Even the lead actress is a complete newbie; this is literally her first-ever seiyuu work (aside from an idol show also airing this season), and she’s goddamn sixteen. This is a team composed of fresh-faced up-and-comers all coming together to plant their first big flag on the anime landscape, and if the first episode is anything to go by, they’re actually going to pull it off. We could literally be watching the next generation of great anime creatives being born right before our eyes. That’s insane. And if you’re a fan of this medium at all, you owe it to yourself to check it out. This season is already stacked as hell, but no anime has me quite as excited as Wonder Egg Priority.

So don’t miss out. Don’t let it slip under your radar. Whether it succeeds with flying colors or crashes and burns in a spectacular trainwreck, this is going to be the anime to watch in winter 2021. Join me for this ride, everyone, cause it’s gonna be fucking great.

Any Kny character you've grown to love/appreciate more??

Thanks for waiting, Anon, I have been trying to really, really hard to narrow this down, but the answer remains: the vast majority of the cast. The only character I loved right away was Tanjiro and that love kept me watching, as with almost every new character I was like, "ugh, I hate this guy. Here I was, having fun being emotionally invested in a high quality anime, and this might ruin it for me." But then the instant I see a different side of their character, I'm like, "...Oh." To go into some examples...

Zenitsu: I could not stand him right away, I hate womanizers, and his conniptions would go on so long that they held up the story. But Gotouge/Ufotable strung me along perfectly, the first glimpse of Thunder Breath made me immediately pay attention and think, "oh, that was cool. I want to see more of that." Seeing him protect the box pretty firmly put him in the "I need to protect this child" box in my heart. And then the spider demon happens, and I'm sending desperate reaction messages to a friend like "NOOOOOO!!!! BABBBBBBBBBYYYYYYYY!!!!" And then he annoyed me all over again at the start of Functional Recovery, ahaha. It's hard to remember how annoyed I was because I'm such a Zen Stan now, and he was a very firm favorite of mine by the time I finished binging the anime up to the last couple episodes, which I waited for as they came out. Inosuke: He was one of the reasons I was curious about the series, I saw some promotional art and was super curious about Nezuko's muzzle (I was one of the people who thought it was some ancient scroll or something, haha) and the kid with the boar mask. The art I saw showed his face, and I assumed he'd be some kid with a cracking voice performed by a female seiyuu. As much as I love Matsuoka's performance now, initially, since I knew what his face looked like, I found it grossly off-putting the moment I heard it. Then every chaotic thing Inosuke did dug a deeper hole; I very quickly decided I hated him, especially when he started beating up on the kid I was starting to like. As his chaos subsided he just became a character I tolerated, and then this happened:

Images you can hear, am I right? This immediately flipped the "BABY" switch in my heart. It was also a lot of fun to understand the Inosuke memes I was seeing everywhere. So by the end of the anime, I loved, loved, loved, loved the Tanjiro/Zenitsu/Inosuke interactions and desperately wanted more (still didn't like how Zenitsu bothered Nezuko, though). I was so impatient for more, but the manga art looked disappointingly off-putting. I figured the anime was successful enough that there'd eventually be more of it, and I wanted to be patient, but then I poked around, read some spoilers, got back into Tumblr to look at fanart and memes, saw a spoiler image of Tanjiro affected by Muzan's poison and the binge-read began. (That's kind of a lie, but I'll get to that.) Let's back up a few episodes. There I was, having a great time, the guy who I forgot about from Episode 1 was back and haha, I guess everyone hates him, and the chick who I figured was going to be a medic who saves Zenitsu in the nick of time turned out to be savage, awesome. I was sending reactions to my friends who were ahead of me, and then we left off seeing the Pillars staring down Best Boy. And I...

Well. Uh. Here, I've dug up an old convo for you, my comments are in blue.

Immediately followed by a passionate vocal rant, which I have transcribed here:

“I feel like what happened was that the mangaka was sitting around with his assistants and was like, ‘welp, gotta make this whole cast of characters, they gotta be so-o-o-o many more levels of extreme than all the other characters I’ve had so far, which isn’t hard, because all of the background characters are cannon fodder and I’ve just gotta leave them all with black hair and no personality traits. So! Gotta go to the opposite of the spectrum with the BIG! POWERFUL! People so no-o-o-body can be normal.’ And so he and his assistants sat down, and they all wrote down just random words or traits, and them put ‘em all in a hat. And then for each character, they pulled out a few of them and said, ‘OK. We’re gonna put these things together, now we have a character.’ And he was probably also like, ‘Iiiiiiiiiiiii’ll flesh them out later. For now, they just need t’… be there, and make an impact. How do we make an impact? By making sure it’s super, super clear what their character traits are. Here, we’ll have this guy repeat the word //HADE//…. ////HA DEEE//// over and over and over… to show that he’s a /showy/ person. Because he /cares/ about that. And he //should// care because that is his character and that’s why he’s powerful.’ OH MY GOSH, it’s so dumb.”

......orz I feel like Genya looking back at how he acted at the end of the Final Selection. I'm sorry, Gotouge, I had not even encountered your love for these characters yet in your little alligator form. Nor had I encountered the yet unseen-sides of these traumatized dragons and tigers. ...*coughs* Um. So. I was pretty harsh.

So this was my mindset, I went into the manga not caring about most of these characters and just wanting more Kamaboko squad interactions and wanting to hurry up and catch up to the battle with Muzan. And it's worth stating that I didn't mean to read it at first. I encountered a few spoilers, and just wanted to look for the context surrounding those parts, and then hunt for the (non-existent) build-up to those parts, and so... uh.........

I read a lot of the manga out of order, and yeah, that did affect how much I cared about what was going on. I didn't actually properly process a lot of it until later re-reads. But to try to state some things simply about each Pillar:

Giyuu: He was just 'ok' to me for a long time, I could see the appeal for why people I knew were fangirling over him but he didn't do it for me. His soft spot for Tanjiro was indeed endearing, though, and I firmly liked him by the time chapter 200 came out and I was properly heartbroken on his behalf.

Shinobu: She was intriguing, and then I liked her as soon as I saw her savage side, she was one of the characters I went hunting for spoilers for.

Rengoku: That stare really put me off at first, but I fell for him over the process of Tanjiro falling for him. When I first finished the train arc I sat back and said, "wow! That's going to make for a good movie!" and then in psyching myself out for the movie several months in advance, I fell hook, line, and sinker and was totally excited for him each time I saw the trailers. And then the movie was *stunning* and I love him even more. Uzui: He was the Pillar I hated most upon first meeting them. I blame the repeated use of his catchphrase. But then when he let his hair down to sell the kiddos the change in design helped warm me up more to him, like, "oh, there was a human in there." It took a long time for him to become more interesting to me, and an uncharacteristically subtle journey to becoming a character I liked. I am currently getting more and more psyched out for him and eager to see how much more I'm going to like him with the shiny Ufotable treatment. Mitsuri: At first I didn't remember her name, I had code-named her as "Boobs." But I kinda had a feeling she was going to grow on me quickly, and I was right, she's one of my easy favorites now. Muichiro: Who? Oh yeah, that kid who always kinda fell to the wayside in my attention. I'd see a lot of Muichiro-themed blogs and hear a lot of little girls looking at merch and showing a clear favoritism of him, and I'd like always react like Muichiro and just be like, "...", and then when I read his major battles I was more emotionally invested in things going on concurrently with other characters, and I was still like, "...", and then two days ago I revisited a Muichiro scene and was suddenly like, "......OH!!! MUICHIRO!!!!!" Himejima: I never really hated Himejima, even if I found his first impression kind of wimpy (haha... oh, I was so wrong). I had a pretty easy acceptance of him too, so I would generally count him among characters I like, but if you were to ask me why, I'd draw a blank. It's kind of a weirdly mature, subdued appreciation for him rather than passionate fangirling. But weirdly when I was daydreaming the other day I found myself thinking, "if I had to marry someone in the KnY cast, it would be Himejima." So like, not a fiery romance, but I see him as my dependable, sturdy rock to grow old with??? What is up with you, sub-conscious?? Iguro: My interest in him rises and falls. Being a Mitsuri fan helped warm me up to his character in the first place, which was the emotional tie I needed since his backstory didn't grip me much (I found it a frustrating distraction while I was desperately reading weekly updates). Reading more subtle details about his character in the fanbooks has brought me around and made me more curious about him, like I'd really like to be a fly on the wall for the conversation he had with Uzui one day about their pasts.

Sanemi: Hahaha, wow. He was so unlikable in the beginning, wasn't he? His character design (yeah, the eyes) was really off-putting too. But then I got to know him and there was no going back, I got totally played. He's a character I'm pretty fond of now and one of the characters I've enjoyed delving into most in fanfic. To keep this answer from getting too long, for the vaaaaaast majority of the cast, I was initially like, "meh" or "OK" or "ew" but now am like, "EEEEEEEEE, I LOVE THIS TOTALLY RANDOM UNIMPORTANT SIDE CHARACTERRRRRRR" so you know... times change. And the more time I spend obsessed with Kimetsu no Yaiba, the more I like them all, so even the characters I'm lukewarm on will probably have their eventual days when they take over my heart and smash it.
