They Got Them Hoppy Legs and Twitchy Little Noses

This is another bunny I mentioned, though there is no actual plot. So! Ursula Vernon's St. Steel/Paladin novels introduced an entity known as a "warrenmind," in Paladin's Strength. Which yes, means they are rabbits with a group intelligence. (And occasionally there is one individual who has been bred by the mind to talk. Which is exactly as creepy as you can imagine. BTW, I love that Ursula Vernon picked an animal that generally doesn't get written as a hive intelligence, like, ever.)

I had an idea that the rabbits given to Lan Wangji are the remnants of a warrenmind. (Or that Lan Yi's rabbits are a warrenmind.) Basically Cloud Recesses has a warrenmind and it is generally friendly toward Lan Wangji and anyone that turns up to visit. (It adores Lan Wangji, having been raised/taken care of by him. Note: it thinks all the Lan cultivators/maybe all the humans are Lan Wangji. Individuality is hard and no on understands.)

I think it would take the cultivators a while to figure out that what they had was a warrenmind. Once figuring it out, Lan Wangji points out that it is not a pet. What this warrenmind *is* is the emotional support being for most of Cloud Recesses, or as much of an emotional support being a group mind can be for beings it finds mostly incomprehensible. They are the cutest therapists, even though therapy does not exist in Fantasy Ancient China.

She looked at Josie making a subtle motion with her hand, slicing right at the neck, an indication to cut that one off. She pivoted to face him, one arm on the bar. “The carrot thing is a myth,” she said, “We associate bunnies with carrots because of Bugs Bunny, in reality, carrots are like ... a sometimes snack for bunnies,” she said. And she would know, her family had some out in their vermont backyard farmhouse. Bunnies and chickens and goats, which made their restaurant farm to table after most people in the town stopped coming in post 9/11.

“WHY the suspicion against bunnies?” she asked, amazed that anyone could NOT find them cute. She thought they were harmless enough. “I’m pretty sure they need good eyesight because they’re prey animals; I doubt it’s anything more insidious.”

She tried to understand and struggled to come up with any valid explanation, until two words echoed in her head.
