Can you write headcanons?
Hi! Thank you for the request and of course I can! Hope you like these.
Ravi loves winter so much because Pip becomes 1000% more cuddly.
“You always run warm.” Pip would say.
Pip would say the most random facts ever at the most random times and Ravi would always laugh though it’s very obvious that he loves Pip’s little habit.
Ravi loves giving Pip handmade gifts and Pip treasures them and even has a corner on her room dedicated for them.
They watch TV shows and have deep discussions about them.
They so would wear each other’s initials!!!
Pip never turned off the find my friend thing on her phone so Ravi always has her location. And he checks it whenever he gets worried about her.
When PipRavi broke up, Pip bought the same perfume Ravi uses and wore it to feel like he’s with her.
Pip would learn more about Ravi’s culture and family traditions and would participate in them (since I’m not desi I didn’t want to mess up so I kept it very vague but you get it).
Pip casually mentions that she loves hand written letters one day and Ravi starts writing her one frequently (every few days at least).
Pip has a box full of them! (She’s just like me fr!)
Ravi loves sharing his earphones with Pip (he makes her listen to Taylor Swift) (as he should)!
When one of them is sick, the other will most certainly get infected because they refuse to leave each other.
I think both of them would develop separation anxiety after everything they’ve been through in AGAD.
Ravi uses Pip’s birthday as his password and Pip uses a combination of their names and the date they got together as her password.
One day, Pip breaks a bone (likely her ankle with how much she ran in AGAD) and she is very grumpy about it, so Ravi tries to cheer her up by drawing little hearts all over her cast.

The Person On Your Mind in October 😈 2022 - Aquarius
Whole of their energy towards Aquarius: 7 Cups
Yikes. This may not be romantic, but it could’ve been somewhere along those lines at some point. Doesn’t have to be, love is not a factor here really. They are confused how you just moved on without them and you’re fine now, or something like that. When they knew you or were present in your life, you had 10 Wands and the weight was crushing you. How did you get through it? I’d love to see this in a positive sense but they seem to be more negative, so it’s probably more from a vindictive/jealous viewpoint. Definitely could have Scorpio placements, that energy is heavy here. Like they thought you were dependent on them & you couldn’t do it alone.
Feelings: The Tower
Something you or they said changed everything, caused a lot of pain, and probably severed the connection altogether. This 9 Swords seems to mirror both of you, intense mental pain, anxiety, playing something in your head over and over on repeat. Their messages lean towards them still being in this mindset, or at least you seem to haunt them with something you’ve said to them. They see you not in that energy anymore and it baffles them. For someone this could be a twin flame, it’s very heavy and chaotic bond, that feeling is here, and you seem to be triggering them like Twins do. For others this is someone that feels competitive with you for some reason, like a sibling or a “friend”.
Intentions: 9 Cups
They seem to want to hurt you, possibly like you hurt them, this person has some active revenge fantasies in their brain. Or things like “knocking you down a peg”, so they can rise above you in some way. Very immature energy. They want to compete, fight, and win, and you’re left wounded and beaten down. What a trashy perspective fr 🤦‍♀️
Actions: The Chariot rev
Thankfully they’re not as stupid as their intentions would show them to be. They’re not doing anything, either because they were stopped in their own lives by something, or because they wisened up to this sort of behavior not being decent. Justice clarifies showing them doing the right thing by not doing anything, probably for the sake of their reputation or career with this King of Pentacles. This can also be someone they got advice from, wish to be, or someone that put them in their place before they could start some bs. Either way, you shouldn’t have to worry about them, but I wouldn’t spend much time wanting to “start over” like your messages imply either. Keep walking 💯
Messages:
Their side:
- I feel you around me everywhere I go.
- I just want to talk to you.
Your side:
- I’ve never met anyone like you.
- I just want to START OVER 💯
Possible signs:
Scorpio, Sagittarius & Gemini
If you’re dealing with:
5 Wands with 9 Cups again, what on earth is going on with your people? Are there several people you’re having to fight with in order to see your dreams come true? If not actually fighting, you could feel conflicted inside about your own dreams where these people are concerned, which is at least healthier for who that applies to. There could also be some level of conflict and competition, and if so, clearly you’re playing into this.
Aries - has deep & loving emotions for you but is perfectly happy and independent on their own, could be a supportive friend, or family
Taurus - trying to create a situation where they can take romantic action towards you, they love you, and probably want to take you out
Gemini - committed to the truth, or you, probably someone wise that you can trust
Cancer - happy to bide their time, very successful and happy where they’re at and probably have a “harvest” coming in soon
Leo - going through a very painful situation, could feel stabbed in the back, and they’re going back and forth on what to do about it
Virgo - fantasizes about giving you something, or vice versa, or could be confused about what to get for you, could be giving you a gift they’ve put a lot of thought into - or vice versa
Libra - feels wounded by you, or whatever they’re going through in life & they’re healing
Scorpio - working on something in secret, or is working so much you won’t talk to them much
Sagittarius - jumping into some new adventure on their own, may not even be telling anyone
Capricorn - telling you about their spontaneous plans that didn’t work out cuz they weren’t that serious about it in the first place
Aquarius - very business focused, could be starting their own, receiving more money, or this is someone that has a great opportunity
Pisces - lack of emotions or any depth here, but you think they are attractive, or vice versa

Light at the End of the Tunnel: Season 13 Destiel Ficlet Part 5
Part 1    Part 2     Part 3    Part 4     Part 6 Part 7 Part 8 Part 9 Part 10
or read on ao3
The drive is silent. Sam peers intently out the window, only looking down to fiddle with his phone.
Dean stares out at the dark stretch of pavement. Hands gripping the wheel tightly, as his gaze wanders upwards, eyes finding the carseat in the rearview mirror. He hears the soft breathing from the backseat, and he grips the wheel tighter, pressing the gas a little harder.
Dean watches sign after sign pass as they fly down an abandoned road, his eyes rising to the mirror every few seconds.
He can't think about what's ahead, not yet. So thinks about his day instead.
This morning was off to a rough start, beginning with the slight derailment of Jack's usual schedule. As far as he’s concerned, it was a major fuck up on Dean's end, but he's forcing himself to table that guilt spiral. Well, at least for now.
He's been, for lack of a better term, an anxious wreck all day. Especially since Sam somehow convinced him to wait until he got back to the bunker, instead of just meeting him half way, like Dean wanted. Sam walked in the door at a quarter after two, and the were already on the road by 2:20.
Because he got that call. He heard his voice. He's ba-no,
Dean won't let him get ahead of himself, he can't be too hopeful, not yet. Not until Dean sees him with his own two eyes.
His is breath catch in his throat.
Dean is going to see him. He is going to see Dean. Which means he'll se-
(read the rest under the cut)
There's a snuff from the backseat as Jack shifts in his sleep. Dean's eyes trail upwards and meet the familiar black carseat. Something pull in his chest.
Then it hits him.
He is going to see Jack, for the first time. He is going to meet his son. The son who's been cared for by Dean. And he'll kno-
Sam mumbles something quietly, ripping Dean from his thoughts. He takes Dean's silence as a cue to repeat himself, informing him they're about twenty minutes out. Something drops deep in the pit of Dean's stomach.
Twenty minutes.
In twenty minutes he's going to see Dean, and see Dean with his baby. And he'll know.
He'll know that Dean messed up. Not just this morning, but everyday for the past three months. Dean tried, with the pictures, and the schedule and the tummy time and the daily writings, but they just weren't enough, he could have done more. Dean knows he fail-
Jack shifts in his sleep again, letting out a little whine. Dean's eyes snap to the mirror. His heart clenches in his chest.
Fourteen minutes.
So Dean tries to reason with himself.
Okay, it's not exactly like he was given a lot of warning on how involved he would be, especially with everything that had happened before wi-
He blinks a few times, immediately cutting off that train of thought before it goes off the rails.
He glances in the mirror, taking a steadying breath. Focus.
Dean tells himself he did the best that he could, he's been doing extensive research, he spends a majority of his day with Jack, he tried to capture every moment and he stuck to the schedule.
For the most part.
His mind subconsciously flashes back to the early hours of the morning. He can hear Jack's wails, he feels the failure wash over him again threatening to consu-
Sam's phone buzzes softly. Jack coos from the backseat. Dean's eyes dart to the clock.
Ten minutes.
In ten minutes Dean will see him. In ten minutes he'll see Dean. In ten minutes, he'll meet his son.
Dean's mind races. He did do the best he could, but he could have done better.
And there's no denying it's true, but he did read the book, he did do the research, he did dedicate himself. And yeah he wasn't perfect, but maybe that was enough for now? Jack seemed pretty happy as far as Dean could tell. And maybe he'll understand.
Maybe he'll even forgive him.
Not for everything of course, Dean's just being logical. But maybe he can forgive him for this.
Because at the end of the day, Dean knows he could have tried harder, he could have done better, he knows it. And Jack deserved better, he deserved a perfect father, and that's something Dean could never be. He knows that.
He isn't Jack's real father, but maybe he was enough in his absence? And maybe his real father could forgive Dean, and he would understand an-
Dean's eyes trail back up to the mirror, he stares at the tiny plastic seat.
Two minutes.
He panics.
Will he know as soon as he looked at Jack? Will he turn those eyes on Dean, full of disappointment and anger? Or will he forgive him? Does Dean even deserve his forgiveness? Will he even speak to Dean? Does he even want to see Dean? What if he doesn't even loo-
Dean's foot finds the break. The air rips from from his lungs, as his hands grip the wheel, knuckles turning white.
He freezes.
Time seems to still for a moment, tension hanging in the air.
A coo from the backseat breaks the silence. Then Sam moves. Dean stalls.
Sam's already half way out the door, and Dean can't move. Not yet.
Dean's eyes desperately travel to the mirror, and his heart pounds at the sight in the reflection.
Then with a shaky breath, he trails his eyes back down the windshield. A figure ahead turns.
In a flash Dean's out of the car, crossing the pavement, pushing his way past Sam.
Dean stops.
He stands, illuminated by a soft blue glow looking as though he nev-but he can’t be, they burn-
The figure faces Dean, meeting his eyes and Dean's vision swims with blue. A blue he never thought he'd see again, and for the first time in months, his heart doesn't break at the color.
A smile pulls at his lips, and Dean smiles back.
It’s him.
Dean moves.
Dean crashes into him, gripping the back of his coat like his life depends on it. He hears the low rumble of the Impala, he smells cheap shampoo, and he let's the familiar warmth in his arms consume him.
Dean feels the name rise up his throat, the name that's been trapped behind his lips, screaming to be released, for what feels like a lifeti-
"Cas".
His voice breaks, and vision begins to blur. He feels something swimming in his stomach, trying to crawl it's way up his throat, threatening to break fr-
"Dean".
A sob forces it's way past Dean's lips, and Cas makes a similar sound. Tears freely fall down his cheeks, but he can't bring himself to care because for the first time in months, he feels whole.
Dean's anxieties which threatened to drown him moments ago, subside. Dean knows they'll soon resurface, but he can't be bothered to worry about that now.
He's too focused on the warmth in his arms.
They both pull back a bit, drinking in one another, and green meets blue. He feels Cas' hand rest in it's place on Dean's shoulder.
A watery laugh filled with relief escapes Dean's throat, Cas joins in.
He's here. He's back. He's didn-
From behind them Sam clears his throat, and they quickly break apart. Dean watches for a moment as Sam engulfs Cas in a hug, then he hesitantly turns back to the car.
He takes a deep breathe.
Dean rips open the backdoor and is met with another pair of wide blue eyes. He carefully removes the seat whispering reassurances, and he tells himself they're to calm Jack.
Dean peers down at the tiny face, and watches as Jack's eyes wander, curiously taking in his new surroundings. He grips the car seat tightly, feeling the plastic dig into his palms, grounding him for a moment.
It's time.
He gently places the carseat on the hood, holding it with one hand just in case. He smooths the blanket down, pulling it off Jack's fac-
"....is that?"
Dean turns. Cas is frozen, blue eyes wide and terrified, a trembling hand raised in question. Dean has never seen him look so...afraid. So hesitant.
It catches Dean off guard, but a smile still pulls at his lips and he nods, beckoning him forward. Sam smiles reassuringly, as Cas slowly crosses the lot, stopping in front of the car.
He gasps.
Dean watches as blue meets blue. Cas' eyes begin to fill with tears, and he suddenly whips his head to look at Dean. Face filled with uncertainty, eyes begging a question.
Which takes Dean entirely by surprise.
Why is Cas looking to him when he-no, now is not the time to unpack that. So he quickly recovers giving him an encouraging smile.
That seems to settle Cas, so he bends a bit and hesitantly extends a finger out to Jack. Jack takes it.
Dean hears Cas' breath hitch, and sees a blinding smile spread across his face, and then a matching one on Jack's.
An emotion Dean's never felt before washes over him. It fills up his stomach and makes his heart ache, in a way that nothing ever has.
He hopes it never stops.
He meets Sam's eye on the other side of Cas. He's sporting a soft smile, and gives him a look that Dean can't quite place, then glances back at Cas and Jack.
Then it hits him.
Dean realizes that this moment right here, might be one of the happiest moments of his life. The three people he cares most about in the entire world, bathed in a blue light, by some dingy phone booth, in the middle of nowhere.
And he's never seen a more perfect sight.
He hastily tries to take in every detail of the scene before him, committing it to memory. He's terrified to look away, for the fear that it might disappear.
Dean feels that strange emotion swell again, as a fresh set of tears cloud his vision.
His smile widens as the gravity of the situation sets in.
Of course there's conversations that have to be had, questions that need to asked, and things Dean is finally ready to discuss, but he pushes them from his mind, because now is not the time. And now, they've got the time.
And besides, there's a more pressing matter Dean needs to attend to first.
He takes a deep breath.
"Jack....this is your Dad".

What sort of music have you been listening to recently? What genres and artists do you like, or go to for comfort? I always find that putting in my headphones and cuddling with my cat helps my anxiety the most.
Have you read any books lately you would recommend? Have you read the osemanverse books other than heartstopper? (Loveless is my favourite, closely followed by Radio Silence)
I hope you're not feeling too anxious and get a good night's sleep, I'm sure you're going to do fine.
P.s. I love your fics! They brought me a lot of comfort during lockdown and remind me of sitting in the sunshine in the park 💖
VERY good questions. to start, i mean, i’ve been listening to the heartstopper mixtape nonstop. it’s so good. i love every song. i do generally just appreciate the pop/indie music vibes, and i’m mainly a massive swiftie. any taylor album is my default comfort, but esp folklore and evermore cause they absolutely saved me through lockdown. haux is probably the only artist that matches up to that comfort—his music is just the most chilled, soothing thing ever. i listen to haux and can instantly just take a deep breath
and i have indeed read all of alice’s books. i got the og solitaire copy in asda the year it came out cause i thought it looked and sounded cool and i’ve never been the same since. tori spring absolutely saved my life the first time i found her and i bought every book of alice’s as they’ve come out since. i’m currently rereading solitaire bc i finally got the updated version they released last year! (and i missed michael holden.) every one has become my whole personality after reading and they’ve all wrecked me but i’m actually majorly attached to i was born for this. i related very much to the whole thing and lister is one of my top emotional support bisexuals fr
as for outside the osemanverse, i literally finished ‘i kissed shara wheeler’ a few hours ago and i loved it. it hit me hard in a lotta ways. i also devoured ‘if this gets out’ not that long ago, and i can’t even pinpoint why i loved it so much but i really did. so i highly recommend both of those!
and thank you!!! i think not getting to sleep til about 4 last night may be a large part of my problem today actually, so i need to manage better than that tonight haha
and i’m so glad my fics brought you comfort! that’s the craziest and loveliest thing to hear :’) and to think they’re worthy of such a warm and bright description…ahhhh. maybe writing a bit would be the best way to cheer myself up, actually 🥰

I love pete and patrick as much as the next person but hello? Andy and pete's friendship is wonderful, Joe and pete's friendship is wonderful, andy and patrick's friendship and Joe and patrick's friendship. Stop fucking sleeping in their love for each other
anon... petal... get out of my mind. i have a breakdown about fob being friends about once a week. andy & pete’s relationship is.. they’ve been tight forever and you can tell- they’re comfortable around each other in ways that you only see in friends who’ve been through everything together, their back & forth in interviews is my favorite- pete gets a chance to not be Pete WentzTM and andy is so comfortable taking charge and cracking jokes, they just have fun bro 🥺🥺🥺 patrick & andy i feel like we never get to see but the mutual respect they have for each other?? baby... andy’s the only one who can mess w patrick w/o pushback, theyve got the middle siblings type bond you know?? patrick and joe.. like. patricks got a big ole crush on joe and we been knew but its still cute <3 fr tho, being the youngest in the band, as well as the two people who have the most influence in fall out boys SoundTM, theyve got a really unique bond- they share such similar experiences in that, and even tho they might butt heads from time to time, their admiration and respect for each not just as people but as musicians is so transparent whenever they talk about each other. theyre back and forth is a fun one two- i forgot who it was but someone once described joe & patrick as “my anxiety and my adhd going back & forth in my head” and its so true !!! joe & pete.......... Joe & Pete. like. fall out boy are all best friends. but joe and pete are best friends dude. they have that oldest/youngest sibling type relationship and ik petes said this before but the whole “i can mess with him but if anyone else does ill break their face” and honestly that goes both ways!!! i think their relationship, out of all of them in the band, has had the most growth.. like joe probably had a little hero worship for pete when they first met but as theyve grown theyve found that equal footing, and everyones always like “pete and patrick just understand each other!!” (which is true!!!) but they sleep on how clearly joe understands pete .. i think pete admires joe so much- as a musician & friend at first but now as a father and creator as well. joe & pete bro.... theyve got a special place in my heart. sorry for the essay ajfndjdjdnd i just have a lot of feelings

Paper Hearts
Shirabu Kenjirou x Reader
Anon requested:  🔢 number 50 for one of your faves? Prompt #50: Paper hearts. Word Count: 1593 A/N: I’ve been deliberating on who to write this for for a week and this morning while writing my Shirabu hcs inspiration finally struck. Writing this fr brought me out of a bpd spiral, too. His power. Thank you for the request, nonnie! I hope you enjoy it! (theres a good chance Semi is ooc I did absolutely no research on him. pulled his characterisation outta my ass n said ‘thats good enough!’ *shrug*.)
Tumblr media
Another paper heart flutters to the floor. You don't notice this one. Kenjirou does, though. He notices everything about you, including the fact that for the last week you've been struggling to pay attention in class, too busy staring at the tiny, heart-shaped scraps of coloured paper. He wonders who's giving them to you. He wishes it had been him. Some of them have notes scribbled on them, some are blank. You seem particularly fond of certain ones, he notices as they get more crumpled over the course of the week. There's at least 15 different ones, he's counted. He's been struggling to pay attention in class too. It's not the hearts that distract him. It's you. It's the wistful smile on your face as you stare at them, the way you rub your thumb over the words. He hates that you're thinking of someone else like that, rather than him. On the way out of the classroom, he picks up the one you didn't notice. Reading it turns out to be a mistake. He doesn't know why he keeps it.
Another week passes, and more hearts appear in front of you. He's sick of seeing them, sick of knowing your affections belong to someone else. Do you even know his name? Probably not and that just pisses him off even more. He's having to force himself to focus on things now, because all he thinks about is you and those stupid hearts. It probably doesn't help that the one he picked up is still on his desk. Why does he still have it? Why did he pick it up at all?
On the third week, he walks into class to see a paper heart on his desk. He'd have assumed you dropped it, but it's very deliberately placed. He reads it as he sits down. All it says is "Hi." but it makes his heart flutter. It shouldn't. There no proof you even gave it to him. Plenty of people give out paper hearts. There's another the next day, but this one is blank. Did the sender simply get too shy to write a note? He slips it in the front of his notebook nonetheless, and he finds his gaze on the back of your head more than usual that day.
It continues like this for a while; he'll come into class every day to a new heart. Some days he has more than one, some days he'd come back from lunch to another. All are blank except for the first, and you've still never glanced his way. By now, he's all but convinced they aren't from you. He keeps them, anyway. "Hey, what's up with you?" "Pardon?" He stares at Semi expectantly. "You're off your game recently." "It doesn’t matter." "We all know you're an overachiever, but you've been shit at volleyball these past few weeks and you don't seem to care. Which means somethings up, and I care about my teammates. So what's your problem?" "Its nothing." He turns to stalk away, scowling as usual, but Semi grabs the back of his shirt. "What's their name?" "What? It's not-! I don't want to talk about it, please let go." "I'm not letting go until you spill." "I hate that you assumed I was hung up over someone." "Was I right?" ".... Damn." "I've seen my fair share of love-struck idiots, Shirabu. Tell me what's wrong." "I don't know. It's confusing. I- I don't like the way they make me feel." "Like your heart wants you to run a marathon but you've got legs made of lead and your lungs are filling with water?" "That's- that's exactly it, yeah." "You've got it bad. Did you tell them?" Kenjirou scoffs. "Please, I doubt they even know my name. But that's not even the issue. They've been getting these little heart-shaped pieces of paper recently- which is really fucking distracting-" "Language." "Sorry.  It's so distracting watching them fiddle with them in class when I'm right there and they've never even looked at me. And if that wasn't enough, 2 weeks ago I started getting them. And I know it's just a coincidence but-" "What if it's not?" Semi interrupts. "I'm sorry?" "Hear me out. What if they haven't been receiving them, but they've been making them for you all this time and only just worked up the courage to give them to you?" "I don't- that's probably not it." "Do the hearts say anything?" "The first one said 'hi' but none of the others have." "Did you check both sides?" “Oh."....No." "Aw, come on Shirabu, I thought you were smart." "I am! Just- I don't know how these things work!" Semi lets out a laugh at his kouhai's incredulous expression. "Go check both sides. If they're really blank, we'll find a solution. If they're not- talk to them." "Thanks, Semi." The setter nods, finally letting go of his shirt, and walks away. Had he really not thought to check both sides? God, it was like you'd taken his brain as well as his heart.
When he arrives at his dorm that evening, he pulls the small box he'd been putting the hearts in from the drawer in his desk, and begins to search them. Semi had been right, of course. He doesn't even notice he's holding his breath as he reads them. He'd stored them in the order you'd given them to him, and he starts with the second one. It's pastel blue, and you must have used a scalpel rather than scissors, because the edges are perfect. Either that, or everything you do is perfect no matter the odds. That wouldn't surprise him. "You're cute." "I mean, you probably know that but" "Sorry I ran out of room on that one" "that one too... my point is that you're cute!" "Its distracting, actually." "But- I really admire your work ethic." "And your concentration." "I don't have the best attention span." "I don't think you're reading these." "You're not, are you?" "Ouch. I'm gonna keep writing them anyway." "If you're not reading these I can tell the truth." "We've spoken twice." "I can recall every word you've ever said to me." "You're a little grumpy and mean sometimes." "But that's endearing and I hate you for it." "You probably don't even know my name." "But I know yours. Wanna know mine?" "It's L/N Y/N." "I'm L/N Y/N and I think I'm in love with you." "How stupid is that? Being in love with a boy you've met twice?" "I'm crazy, right?" "I'm so glad you don't read these." "If you ever do read them, though..." "Could you tell me how you feel about me?" "Even if you hate me. I wanna know."  The last one, the one he'd received today, has a simple question written on it, completely irrelevant to all of the others. "You play volleyball, right?" He decides that’s a good jumping-off point. The next day, he gets to class 10 minutes early, and waits. He practically jumps out of his seat when you walk in, all the other people in the room completely put out of his mind. "L/N!" "Sh-Shirabu?" "Hi... I uh- I just...I wanted to tell you that I do. Uh- play volleyball, I mean." "You read them?" He's not sure whether it’s anxiety or glee that’s more prevalent in your expression, but both are certainly playing a part. "Yeah! I wasn't not reading them on purpose, I uh... I didn't think to turn them over." A giggle escapes you, sweet and melodic and he could kissed you right now, but he doesn’t. Your expression switches from amusement to concern in a heartbeat. "I said... A lot of personal things in them. I'm sorry if I made you uncomfortable." "No! You could ne- Actually, a lot of what you said is... I've been thinking the same things." "You have?" "Yeah. D'you think maybe we could... you know..." "Date?" "Yeah, that." "You're not the best with people, are you?" "Not really." "That's okay, neither am I." A soft kiss pressed against his cheek almost has him falling apart at the seams. He is so comically in love with you. "I'd love to date you, Shirabu." "Call me Kenjirou." "As long as you call me Y/N." "Of course. Could you- Can i ask something of you?" "Name it, Kenjirou." God, that sounds so beautiful from your mouth. It’s as if you've breathed new life into the name he'd thought nothing of for years; as if you've revived it into something perfect. "Don't stop writing me notes?" Somehow, your smile is brighter than anything he's ever seen, dimming the light streaming through the window and throwing everything but you into shadow. He doesn't mind, you're all he wanted to look at anyway. "As long as you read them this time." When the two of you are distracted in class that day, it's not some colourful scraps of paper that steal your concentration. It’s the glances you give each other and the soft smiles sent back and forth.
Years down the line, he'll pull a nondescript box out of a cupboard and open it to hundred of small paper hearts. He’ll laugh at the sudden nostalgia and call you into the room, and the two of you will put aside your plans for the night to read them together, reminiscing on your high school years, more in love with every second that passes. For now, though, he's just happy to bask in the warmth of your smile. And you're just happy being his.

born in utrecht, the netherlands to a dutch father and american mother, pip akkermans’ life has been marked with tragedy since she was born. it seems to follow her. she was born five minutes before her twin sister, sophie, but as the two girls took their first breath, their mother took her last, leaving julian akkermans a single father.
growing up without a mother, pip and sophie found solace in each other, forming a bond akin to many twins, one so close, so dependent, it was like they were in their own little bubble. sophie was always the bright one, the one who walked into a room and immediately lit it up. pip was always the quieter of the two, her energy more dour, more withdrawn. but together they were a team, causing trouble left and right, getting out of it with sophie’s sweet smile.
their father was never the same after their mother died, but the coldness that possessed julian was all they’ve ever known. often times he was out of the house, unable to properly step up in the role of father to girls that were the spitting image of his lost love and the sole reason she’s gone. he drank. a lot. but he was never violent, simply sad.
he starts going out a lot, and eventually, brings home a woman that he says is going to become their step mother. a wedding quickly ensues. there’s a meanness in her, a clear disdain for the twins. but they don’t care, they don’t need to. they have each other. they’ll always have each other.
they’re fourteen and visiting amsterdam for the weekend when their car is hit head on by another, there’s enough momentum to flip them twice. the driver and pip are fine, minor injuries, but sophie passes away before anyone arrives, her hand in her sister’s as she takes her last breath.
pip is distraught, and for obvious reasons, she’s lost the better part of herself, even though she promised she wouldn’t go away. if her dad is heartbroken, he doesn’t show it. he simply continues to pull away. eventually sending pip to live with her aunt in america, rhode island to be specific.
she doesn’t exactly adjust well, not only is she still reeling from the death of her sister, but she’s experiencing intense feelings of detachment and nightmares of sophie every night, among other symptoms. her aunt eventually takes her to a psychologist, where she’s eventually diagnosed with depression and ptsd.
thus begins her long journey into managing her mental health, her aunt showing a surprising amount of support. she wishes on some level, that she had always grown up with her, that her father sent them away when they were children, maybe she wouldn’t feel so alone. maybe sophie would still be here.
for the first year in america, she doesn’t quite have friends, because she prefers her usual solitude. but eventually, she finds her group of friends, within her soccer team, her clubs, anything to get her mind off of her old life.
she tries to be normal, she really does, but she knows something is off– she feels empty, all the time, and her medication makes her feel like a zombie. eventually she falls into a crowd that is prone to partying, drinking, smoking. she’s sneaking out most nights to join them at their spot.
her senior year, she spins out, has a very public breakdown, that ends up leading to her taking a leave of absence from school, and essentially once again, returning to pariah status.
she does manage to graduate and get into thales university, by sheer force and extracurriculars, where she begins majoring in journalism, because it’s always been something she’s interested in, having been a part of her school’s newspaper before, well, everything.
she meets nana in one of their gen eds, and they hit it off immediately. they’re practically inseparable for a few years, until there’s an incident of pip being caught in a compromising position with one of nana’s flings at the time (it wasn’t what it looked like) and before she has a chance to explain, they’re no longer speaking.
nana goes missing a few weeks afterwards, and the emptiness comes back, feeling guilty as if it was her fault. as if everything that has happened has been a result of knowing pip and her general trail of misery. she was going to apologize, too. she just never got the chance.
now with the death of steven, her curiosity is piqued, her journalistic instinct triggered by the mystery afoot, and focusing on that means she doesn’t have to think about herself, because by god, she does not want to think about herself.
TL;DR: pip and her twin sister, sophie, are born in utrecht, the netherlands– their mother dies when they’re born. their father withdraws, eventually remarrying a bitter woman. when pip and sophie are 14, they’re involved in an accident that takes sophie’s life, and leaves pip alone, a bit traumatized. she moves to america to live with her maternal aunt, and goes to high school there, until she essentially has a breakdown her senior year. she meets nana her first year of thales, and they’re inseparable until a misunderstanding a month or two before she disappeared. now with steven’s death, she’s using her journalism skills to investigate it all.
𝐏𝐄𝐑𝐒𝐎𝐍𝐀𝐋𝐈𝐓𝐘
between the melancholy is a very bright girl. she’s always been rather inquisitive and observant, the quieter one of the akkermans twins. as she grows older, learns to live without her sister, learns to live alone, she grows into her own voice. she becomes someone unafraid to speak her mind, simply because she has nothing left to lose. she’s a bit dry, a bit sarcastic, and her humor can border morbid on occasion because she’s gotta laugh or else she’ll cry. she has a bit of trouble sticking her nose in places it shouldn’t be. she’s rather loyal, but it takes a lot for her to trust you– she trusted nana, and look where that got her. that being said, she has long bouts of depression, and detachment, which she’s been trying to manage for years now, but still, in the quiet moments, there’s a feeling the girl is rather– haunted.
𝐓𝐈𝐃𝐁𝐈𝐓𝐒
she has pretty good investigative skills! she works on the newspaper at the school, so she’s kind of all over the place
explores a lot, likes to wander because it clears her head, though it also means she’ll probably enter places she’s not usually allowed (i.e. abandoned buildings, etc.)

Side Tracks opinions part 2: Virgil
(Here we go again! I think I may have less to say about Virgil’s than Janus’, so I’ll try to make this one shorter)
1) Sunrise, Sunset: This ones about Virgil when he was with the darksides. Virgil is beginning to get tired of his life as a darkside and the monotony of it (“sunrise, sunset, swiftly go the days. Sunrise, sunset you wake up then you undress, it always is the same”). He feels like something is changing in him, but doubts that he will ever be able to escape the routine that he’s been living in for so long (“Because you've changed, Yeah, you've changed” “from a cradle to a casket, there is no way to escape” “The sunrise, the sunsets, you're hopeful and then you regret, the circle never breaks”).
2) Let’s Kill Tonight: Some of Virgil songs can be very vague and it can be hard to pinpoint who the song is focused toward (this is one of them). My interpretation of the song is that this takes place during Virgil’s first appearance with the light sides (“Make room we're taking over here” “Show them all you're not the ordinary type”) Perhaps the dark sides were aware of Virgil leaving and so Virgil’s initial view of the light sides was a bit more spiteful and angry than we thought. With this interpretation I like to assume that it was Janus’ plan to let Virgil out, perhaps in an attempt to get all the dark sides accepted, but it backfired when Virgil realized that the light sides weren’t as bad as he was raised to believe.
3) Sally’s Song: After the last song, this song shows Virgil’s realization that perhaps he does want to be with the light sides. He really cares about Thomas and wants to be with him, but he’s worried about whether or not he’ll be helpful and worthy (“And though I'd like to stand by him, Can't shake this feeling that I have” “And will he see? How much he means to me. I think it's not to be” “All though I'd like to join the crowd, In their enthusiastic loud. Try as I may It doesn't last”)
4) It Ends Tonight: Virgil is starting to be accepted, woot woot (“When darkness turns to light, It ends tonight, it ends tonight” “A weight is lifted on this evening”). Virgil seems to start to feel a lot of anger towards the other dark sides at this point. He feels as if he’s been tricked by them and that Thomas needed him all along (“A falling star, at least I fall alone”). He’s now showing anger and frustration towards the dark sides that really hasn’t been prevalent in the playlist up until this point. I think he’s realized that they’ve either been using him, lying to him, or fooling him (“I look at you with such disdain” “Now I'm on my own side, It's better than being on your side”).
5) I’d Hate to be You When People find out What this Song is About: Now that Virgil is with the light sides, he’s worried that he may not be good enough or helpful enough for Thomas (“Well, I'm thinking of the worst things That I could say to you” “But I'm tongue tied and terrified of what I'll say” And I'm sorry that this wasn't easy, When I asked you believe me” “I could only sing you sad songs”). He’s so worried about hurting Thomas because of his dark side origins that he doesnt understand why Thomas is trying so hard to accept him (“You never let go, But I let go”). He also refrains from telling Thomas about his true past probably out of fear or worry that Thomas won’t want him anymore (“But I never told you everything, I'm losing hope and fading dreams”).
6) A Decade under the Influence: Virgil is anxious™️. Despite how worried he is about his ability to help Thomas, he knows that he has to try and that he has to protect Thomas from the other dark sides (“Well, I've got a bad feeling about this, I've got a bad feeling about this” “To hell with you and all your friends, To hell with you and all your friends” “I’m a nervous wreck”).
7) Thnks fr th Mmrs: HUGE, SASSY middle finger to Janus. Honestly, thats it. Virgil has been fully accepted by Thomas and the light side gang and he is LOVING it. This song is just Virgil rubbing it in Janus’ face how much better off he is without him and the dark sides (“Who does he think he is?” “Thanks for the memories even though they weren't so great”). He also flaunts the fact that Patton is a much better parent/authority figure than Janus ever was (“He tastes like you, only sweeter”).
8) Be Calm: This ones cuteeeee. Virgil has been with the light sides for some time now and has begun to understand that he can be helpful to thomas (“As I walk through the streets of my new city, My back feeling much better, I suppose”). The entire song just feels like Virgil helping Thomas through an anxiety attack or some panic of sorts. He relates to Thomas on the feeling and tries his best to help him relax (“I close my eyes, I tell myself to breathe” “And be calm. Be calm. I know you feel like you are breaking down. Oh I know that it gets so hard sometimes. Be calm.” “Take it from me, I've been there a thousand times.” “You hate your pulse because it thinks you're still alive” “It just gets so hard sometimes”). Theyre starting to bond and finally understand each other and that is just super sweet 💜💜💜.
9) I’m not Okay (I Promise): Honestly... I’m not super sure about this one. It’s another vague one as to who it is aimed toward, but I’m just gonna assume it’s either Thomas or Patton. Virgil is feeling like he isn’t being listened to and needs to be taken more seriously (“I never want to let you down or have you go” “I told you time and time again you sing the words but don't know what it means” “I held you close as we both shook for the last time” “You said you read me like a book, but the pages all are torn and frayed” “But you really need to listen to me, Because I'm telling you the truth”).
10) Imaginary: Despite now being a light side, Virgil still worries about the darker sides that are hidden within Thomas (“In my field of paper flowers And candy clouds of lullaby. I lie inside myself for hours And watch my purple sky fly over me”). He knows that they will try to get out at any moment and may be harmful to Thomas, so he has to keep his guard up. (“Don't say I'm out of touch, With this rampant chaos your reality” “I know well what lies beyond my sleeping refuge” “Swallowed up in the sound of my screaming, Cannot cease for the fear of silent nights”).
11) Soft Shock: Oof guys... I really, really don’t know here. This song is SO romantic that it’s hard to even imagine why it’s on Virgil’s playlist to begin with. There is also a vague “you” referenced like in most of Virgil’s songs and I frankly have no clue who it’s supposed to be. I’ll just list some lines that I think are important and maybe you all could help me figure it out. “Well it's a shock, shock to your soft side” “Summer moon (this is like a period of summer where its very warm and things are in bloom)” “Better, back together” “Catch your shut eyes in my room”.
12) The Good that Won’t Come out: Virgil is still worried about his dark past and how that will affect the others and Thomas. He knows that he needs to tell Thomas, but he’s worried that if he does, Thomas will only be able to see the bad things that Virgil brings with him (“I do this thing where I think I'm real sick, But I won't go to the doctor to find out about it 'Cause they make you stay real still in a real small space As they chart up your insides and put them on display. They'd see all of it, all of me, all of it” “All of the good that won't come out of me And all the stupid lies I hide behind. It's such a big mistake, Lying here in your warm embrace”). He finishes the song out by comparing himself to his past, dark side friends (“Let's talk about all our friends who lost the war” “It's all of the good that won't come out of them And all the stupid lies they hide behind”).
13) Sick Sad World: Again... I’m sorry guys but this song doesn’t seem that deep to me (at least nothing stood out. Basically, all I got is that Virgil knows he makes a lot of mistakes, but he does his best to fix them (“My head's a permanent mess And I can't think for the stress” “I close my eyes and pretend That the ground beneath me has disappeared” “Rewind and overwrite, Hope life begins at twenty-nine”). Virgil also still seems to think that he isn’t being listened to enough and that he isn’t helping as much as he wants to with the light sides (“So what, is this is as good as it gets?” “So won't you let me in”).
14) Ignorance: Another Janus song! Whose shocked? Anyone? Yeah, me neither 😂. But this one is SUPER interesting as it gives us some insight into what Janus and Virgil’s relationship was like before Virgil left. The two seemed to be very close and perhaps had similar pessimistic views on the world (“Yeah, the friends who stuck together. We wrote our names in blood”). Virgil knows that the change in him was for the better and he wants Janus to realize this too, but he isnt about to feel bad for Janus if he refuses to see the truth (“But I guess you can't accept that the change is good” “If I'm a bad person, you don't like me, Well, I guess I'll make my own way” “This is the best thing that could have happened. Any longer and I wouldn't have made it. It's not a war, no, it's not a rapture. I'm just a person, but you can't take it” “The same tricks that, that once fooled me, They won't get you anywhere. I'm not the same kid from your memory, Well, now I can fend for myself”). Now, a line that I’m sure people will see as confirmation of Ignorance being the next side, has a different meaning to me: “Ignorance is your new best friend”. To me, this proves that Ignorance is a part of Janus. Virgil believes that Janus will be stuck in the dark forever because he is ignorant to what the real world brings. Janus is so stuck in his hatred for society and his lack of trust for others that he ignores information that could prove his thoughts wrong. That is ignorance at it’s core, and Janus is being intentionally ignorant to the fact that Virgil becoming a light side was a good thing.
15) The Ice is Getting Thinner: Another song that solidifies that Virgil and Janus were actually friends at one point (“We're not the same, dear, as we used to be. The seasons have changed and so have we”). Virgil knew that him and Janus were growing apart back when he split from the dark sides and he knew it was for the better, but it still hurt him (“There was little we could say, and even less we could do, To stop the ice from getting thinner under me and you” “And it saddens me to say, But we both know, well, it's true. That the ice was getting thinner Under me and you”). This perhaps shows that the ill-will between the two is not really due to Virgil hating Janus, but instead a sort of broken heart dynamic. Virgil knew he needed to leave, but Janus may not have been ready and may not have understood why someone he cared so much for would just leave him for the others.
16) Overkill: This one seems fairly straight forward to me. Virgil is scared of the dark sides and the implications their acceptance may have for Thomas. He can feel them lurking close by and is on edge because of it. He wants to protect Thomas from them, but at the same time thinks that he may be overreacting (“I can't get to sleep. I think about the implications” “Especially at night. I worry over situations. I know we'll be alright. Perhaps it's just imagination” “Day after day it reappears. Night after night my heartbeat shows the fear. Ghosts appear and fade away” “Especially at night I worry over situations that I know will be alright. It's just overkill.”
17) Under pressure: This ones a bit hard to decipher, but I’ve got an idea. Virgil really respects and values Patton as one of Thomas’ sides, but the other dark sides seem to disagree. Virgil wishes that they would be able to see Patton in the same way that he does and perhaps then they would be accepted by Thomas (“Watching some good friends screaming "Let me out!"” “Can't we give ourselves one more chance?” “Why can't we give love that one more chance?”). Basically, I think the reason that Virgil was accepted by the light sides was because he understood Patton (love and feelings) and what he means to Thomas. Janus has now shown after being accepted that this could be the case (seeing as he was accepted only when Patton accepted him, the other sides didnt really play a part).
18) Everything is Alright: When reading my thoughts on this song, keep in mind that it is connected to the next song. Virgil basically is very anxious about menial things in life that he shouldn’t be anxious about (“Because I hate the ocean, theme parks and airplanes, Talking with strangers, waiting in line..”). Virgil doesn’t feel like things are okay and he doesn’t feel safe, but he asks the person in the song to tell him that everything is okay anyways. Now a while back, I remembered Joan mentioning in a livestream that Janus would be the one to lie to Thomas about things being alright even when they’re not, so this got me thinking. Perhaps Janus and Virgil got along so well in the past because Janus would lie to Virgil whenever he was having a panic attack in order to calm him down. Virgil may have found comfort in this as lying to himself may have been the only way to escape his episodes (“‘Someday you'll be fine..’ Yes, I'll be just fine.” “Tell me that you're alright, everything is alright. Please tell me that you're alright, everything is alright.”). Idk It just feels like Janus trying to calm Virgil down to me.
19) The Middle: (remember how I said this was connected to the above song? Yep, keep that in mind) So right after the last song, this song began to play and at first I thought the two songs were basically about the same thing. Virgil is anxious and needs reassured that things are okay. This song seemed to have a different tone though. The speaker is reassuring Virgil, but in a different way. They’re not lying to Virgil and telling him just what he wants to hear, but they are feeling with Virgil and comforting Virgil with truth and honesty (“Hey, don't write yourself off yet. It's only in your head, you feel left out” “Don't you worry what they tell themselves When you're away.” “It just takes some time, Little girl you're in the middle of the ride. Everything, everything will be just fine. Everything, everything will be alright.” “You know you're doin' better on your own” “Live right now, just be yourself. It doesn't matter if it's good enough For someone else.” “Don't worry what their bitter hearts Are gonna say”) That’s right. This song is about Patton doing the exact same thing that Janus once did for Virgil only better. Not only that, but he’s reassuring Virgil about his worries regarding the dark sides. That must sting for Janus...
20) Vindicated: I think this song takes place right after Virgil confessed his past to Thomas. He’s scared that Thomas will reject him, but he explains that he’s trying his best to be better for Thomas despite the many flaws he may have (“I am selfish I am wrong. I am right, I swear I'm right. Swear I knew it all along And I am flawed, but I am cleaing up so well”). Despite his fear of rejection he has hope that Thomas will accept him as he’s begun to see things in himself that someone (probably Patton) has seen all along (“Hope dangles on a string, Like slow-spinning redemption” “I am seeing in me now the things you swore you saw yourself”).
(And there you have it guys! I realize this one is probably just as long as the last one, so I’m sorry about that 😂. Please let me know your thoughts 💜)

Instincts Sucks Chapter Nine Sneak Peek: New Pack Members
Marinette jumped when the large crowd of reporters started shouting questions and camera’s snapping off as Adrien ran up to his girlfriend and dragged her back inside with Natalie following close behind trying to shield off as much from the cameras she could.  Slamming the door shut behind them, Adrien moved Marinette away from the windows, feeling the need to shield her from the chaos that was no doubt occurring outside now.  He held her close.  This wasn’t starting off well and he knew this was going to blow up further before the issue could get resolved.
He felt Marinette’s fingers curl in his shirt, clinging to him as he tightened his hold around her.
“Adrien,” he heard Marinette whisper, “what’s going on?”
Adrien leaned his head down, his nose falling into her damp hair, smelling the tropical scent.  The simple closeness and smells of her shampoo brought some of the anxiety nagging in the back of his head to relax.  He’ll figure out how to erase the nonsense of the media and show them the amazing person that is Marinette.
“Someone spilled to the media that you and I are mates and,” he paused.  The idea of telling her what people were saying about her brought hesitation, but he knew she needed to be aware of the situation. Plus he hated keeping anything from Marinette.  “People are thinking wrongly of you.  Speculations thinking you’re some gold digger, the whole fame, and fortune deal.  They’ve even been told I’ve been with you the entire week and beginning the think you’re pregnant.”
His thoughts are cut off when he hears Marinette giggling.  He looks down at her to see her head hiding in his chest trying to hide her laughing until she looked up to find Adrien staring back at her.  He was stunned to find her smiling.
“What is it with people lately always asking and wondering if I’m pregnant,” Marinette chuckled out.
Of course, leave it to Marinette to find a way to lighten the mood.
“I would have expected a different answer from you to honest.”
“If we’re being honest about the situation, Adrien, I’ve been expecting this to happen the day we’d become a couple.  No matter how much we try there will always be some people who’d start rumors and claim me a gold digger.  It was inevitable.”
“That’s the frustrating part, Mari.  There’s no reason for you to be a gold digger when your family has money.  Your family has a famous and popular bakery, your family in China is just as famous with your Uncle being a well-known Chef, and grandparents having their own franchise.  And don’t get me started on your father’s side.”
“But Paris doesn’t need to know about my entire family success on both sides. And I could care less that they do.  They don’t need to know how successful and wealthy my family has to be to show how worthy I am for you.  It’ll be okay, minou, we’ll figure this out, together.”
Adrien took a breath and exhaled.  He looked at her and smiled.  His lady was always brave and courageous and even in this ridiculous misfortune of rumors she still looked to the bright side of things.
“You’re such a strong woman, my lady.  However, it still upsets me hearing all the things being assumed about you.  I’m just worried about someone ruining you and your chances for your future.  Pere and Mama always warned me that there are people out there who would ruin any form of competition and I have an inkling of a feeling that someone is indeed attempting to do so.”
Marinette pats her hand against his chest above the area of his heart, “My handsome, protective kitten.  You’re such a knight it never ceases to amaze me.”
“Hey. A knight will always be protective of his lady,” Adrien stood proud, arms crossed over his chest.
Marinette playfully smacks him, “Dork. Back to what we were discussing.  Since you’re worried, surely you have a friend from industry experience as a model that’s gone through a similar situation. Not a model per se, but someone you know personally that’s gone through rumor scandals and whatnot.  They could have answers you’re seeking.  Maybe Chloe?”
Adrien shakes his head, “No, Chloe hasn’t gone through something like this.  Even when she was snobby back when we were fourteen she’s never had anything like this or any form of rumors go after her or her family.  And ever since she and Nathaneal had been dating it became more of a romantic love story than that typical money standings.”
His arms crossed, his left index finger tapping against his right arm when a person came to mind.  A smile stretched across his face, someone he knew well and was one of his closest friends from his extracurricular activities.
“I actually know someone that might be of help.” He looked down at his girlfriend and reached for her hand.  “Let’s head to my room.  We’ll give her a call and see if she can help us figure this out.”
“Who is she?” Marinette asked as she followed Adrien up to his bedroom.
Reaching his bedroom, Adrien closes the door and lead Marinette to his couch.  While he scanned through his contact list, he responded back, returning Marinette’s question.
“I’m not sure you’d know her personally but I’m positive you and others know of her from her successes in sporting competitions.  Her name’s Kagami Tsurugi.”
“The Kagami Tsurugi? One of the best fencing proteges out there?  You’re friends with her?”
Marinette couldn’t believe her boyfriend knew one of the top fencing competitors in the young adult divisions.  She knew Adrien was an incredible fencer himself but she’s seen Kagami fence on television and world competitions and even she couldn’t deny that Kagami is definitely one of the best.  There’s was a few times she remembered Adrien talking about a Kagami in his fencing academy being one of his strongest competitors.  She just never thought they actually became friends.
“Yep.  We got to talking with each other back when we were fifteen.  She didn’t have a lot of friends and we just clicked the more we began talking.  It’s been a bit over a year since I’ve spoken with her since she’s been traveling for titles in sporting events, but I recall a moment back when we were sixteen that she told me about.  Kagami told me that she found her destined which both surprised us.”
“She met her destined at sixteen?  How’s that possible?  No one knows until at the age of eighteen.”
“Exactly, but I guess it was her destined that found her by accident during a walk around the city. Kagami was unsure but she took a chance and got to know the guy.  I remember he said that he’s two years older and that he was calm and down to earth, her words.  She said they’re complete opposites and that she wouldn’t trade it for anything.  Said that he offers an out from all the expectations from the world with her career.”
“Have you ever met him?”
Adrien shakes his head, “no, she never got the chance to tell me.  Or she just didn’t want to share at the time.  But there was a moment two years ago I recall where people believed that her destined was a gold digger cause they weren’t of the same status.  Kagami would call me at times in frustration and to vent.  I can’t remember if they ever released the name of her destined but there is a chance that the Tsurugi’s paid or possibly threaten the media to not release his name.  Eventually, things got settled though Kagami wanted to chop the media for disrespecting her man as she would say.”
Both young adults broke in laughter at the image of Kagami chasing away the media with a dueling sword of some kind.  That would have been an image they would save and hang up and maybe get her to sign.
“Alright, let’s see if we can get ahold of her.”
Clicking Kagami’s contact, Adrien clicked the green call button and placed the phone on speaker.  A few rings went through when they heard a click indicating the call being answered.
“This is Kagami Tsurugi, her temporary secretary answering. How can I help you?”  The sound of a calm, collected young man’s voice was not what Adrien and Marinette were expecting to hear on the other line.  In the silence, the two teens heard notes of music being played amongst their confusion.
“Uh, hi.  I’m looking to speak with Kagami, is she there?”  Adrien wasn’t sure how to respond to this.  He wasn’t expecting someone else to answer her cell phone.
“Depends.  Who’s calling and what is the purpose of your call?” The young man asked.
Adrien was slowly becoming frustrated with this man.  “I’m not sure I feel obligated to tell you since I don’t know who you are?  So why don’t you just get Kagami for me, alright?”
The sound of strumming halted and the sound of an object was being set aside.  What Adrien and Marinette weren’t expecting for was the young man on the other line to respond back with a hardened tone.
“Listen here.  I don’t know who you are but I am not letting someone who refuses to offer their name and purpose speak with my girl.  I don’t take chances when it involves my Gami, so either you give me your purpose or I’m hanging up.”
So Kagami’s boyfriend was who Adrien and Marinette were speaking with.  Marinette gave the young man credit for being protective of his mate and thinking about Kagami’s status, she couldn’t blame the young man for being cautious.
Marinette was about to break in and speak when she and Adrien heard the sound of a door through the phone open and close and who they expected to be Kagami once they heard her voice speak out.
“Babe, what are you doing?”
“Hello, my dragon. You have a fanboy on the line who refuses to tell me why he wants to speak to you.”
‘A FANBOY? I’m not a fanboy!’
“He’s lying Kagami!  I’m not a random fanboy.  I’m just calling in hopes to talk to you and seek for some help.”
Kagami’s response came back instantly with surprise.
“Adrien?!”
They heard his name repeated by Kagami’s boyfriend, only for her boyfriend to repeat with his full name.
“Adrien Agreste?”  The young man asked.
“Yea? Wait, how do you-”
“No way! Adrien, it’s Luka.”  Adrien could hear the smile from Luka through the phone.  Before he could respond in shock to hear one of his other friends, one he considered a brother, Marinette jumped in full of shock herself.
“Luka?!”
“Mari?!  Is that you? Oh, my gods, it’s been so long.  How are you guys doing?”
“Wait, you’re Kagami’s boyfriend?” Marinette asked in surprise.
“Fiance actually.”
“You're engaged?!” The couple shouted in shock.
“Damn it, Luka! It was supposed to be a surprise!” Kagami shouted in the background.
A/N: Just in case if anyone asks and wonders why Luka didn’t know it was Adrien, it was because Kagami doesn’t have Adrien Agreste as his contact name.  It starts with an R and ends with an L. ;3 Let’s see if you guys can figure that out. Should be easy lol. The full chapter should hopefully be available at the end of the month.

ok, now that i’ve had a few hours to process that ep (and also have conceptualized it in conversation to ppl irl) these are my Opinions on it:
(tl;dr bc it’s long under the cut - fuck the did/”mpd” scene, just cut that shit entirely and switch the a-plot and b-plot, how did jake regress to his s1 self in 1 ep, i don’t like the implications jake’s anti-therapy sentiments have re: amy and her own mental health journey, read my old amy fic to see how deep into her character i got last year which is part of why i’m so upset now)
the most problematic scene for me was the did/”mpd” scene, 10000%. outdated terminology, pretending to be mentally ill for a gag, etc. also, the scene itself literally didn’t advance the plot at all. jake could’ve easily gotten the psychiatrist’s notebook and then left.
“then there’d be a scene missing!” you cry. which is why i propose to you that then we could’ve had an additional scene at the end, after the psychiatrist is arrested, to more properly resolve jake’s angst (as well as address the kinda mean and belittling shit he said to terry and charles for going to therapy at the beginning of the ep ummm????).
why, why was the jocelyn revelation plot part of this episode? y’all know i’m sick and tired of rosa’s bi-ness and love life being put constantly on the back burner since she came out, and i was hoping the jocelyn revelation would get to be the a-plot, but nooooo, it had to be jake and charles. again. for the 120947092375072th time. literally right after they were the a-plot last week too. basically, i wanted rosa/jocelyn to be the a-plot.
this goes nicely with my previous point as well, bc a simple restructuring of the episode could’ve solved both of these problems i had. all the show had to do was cut the did/”mpd” scene (and the lead-in to it in the prior scene) entirely, add in 1-2 more scenes for rosa/jocelyn, and boom, the plots would’ve been reorganized and the jake therapy plot wouldn’t have been as...off.
hello b99 writers room have y’all been watching your own show since, idk, 2013? jake literally lost 5 years of character development in this ep i swear to god...esp considering they’ve had an ep abt jake breaking charles’ trust and going behind his back in an investigation before, not to mention the fact the character arc literally last week was charles learning to say no more strongly and stand up to jake. considering there was no consequences to jake’s insubordination this week - legit charles didn’t say anything abt it - i’d argue that character development has already been undone lmao...just after one (1) week.
i thought jake’s conversation with the psychiatrist at gunpoint was interesting and more b99-esque than literally anything else in jake’s plot. it’s cool that jake wants to go to therapy now. but.....how has he never been before, aside from his childhood experience???
i’m not even kidding with how much this confused me???? have y’all not watched other cop/law enforcement shows before???? i swear if i had a dollar for every time a character on those other shows goes through some shit on the job and then has to complete departmentally mandated therapy sessions to keep their job/return to full active duty.....sis.......how did this never happen to jake between all the shit he’s done on this show (going undercover, going into witness protection program, being in fucking prison???)
not to do a #shamelessplug but remember when i wrote an amy-centric peraltiago fic last year that dealt with this exact thing bc this is literally a way b99 could’ve done mental illness rep easily with all the shit jake has gone through
fr tho how did holt or amy not make jake go to therapy....bro
i know amy’s own mental health is often discussed in fanon and we’ve all kinda collectively accepted her as an awesome character who suffers from poor mental health at times (extreme anxiety/stress, her actually ocd tendencies), so maybe this isn’t as much a canon point, but...the show, through jake’s supposed anti-therapy opinions until literally just now, has confirmed that amy doesn’t go to or has never used therapy? i mean, think abt it - would jake be that cold abt a medical practice that his wife, who he loves dearly, has utilized in the past?
so, basically, this means amy’s high anxiety and stress are just part  the “quirky, over-the-top type-A girl LOL XD” joke of her character, rather than any indications of genuine distress that may suggest she needs help or actual therapy....cool love that
ok also i can’t stop thinking back to the b99 sdcc panel last year when a fan asked the cast + dan goor abt this exact thing! if i recall correctly, she mentioned feeling represented in her mental illness through amy and her constant anxiety, and then asked if the show would consider doing more explicit mental health rep in the future. tho dan goor was into it, he said the show wouldn’t do it unless he felt they had the right plot or whatever....basically unless he was confident that they would treat mental health/illness w respect. i can’t imagine being in the writer’s room and reading jake’s plot in this ep and thinking this is the proper representation promised to that fan

i seen a few times ppl like implying that the positive char development that the donuts are getting via their experiences has anything to do with them having Needed A Break from each other.......i’m truly bemused like. are you talking about this in terms specifically of their Relationship to each other? b/c frankly the way i was seeing it is that their relationship prior to these arcs was actually in a fairly chill place, and that they had figured out a lot of things abt their own / each others needs in terms of it that had been causing them problems and all. obviously i wasnt thinking like “guess everythings perfect for them now” since i mean it wasnt even clear they were like for sure officially ~together~ but also b/c why would it be when they’d just started to be able to have a more solid handle on their own mutual deal
but also like. the only thing we can really say is that sadie quit the big donut and got “yolo” knuck tats because there was nothing at all adequate abt the job w/o having a coworker to hang out w and the fact that lars just went off and died is like, well then live for the fuckin moment i guess huh. like that situation isnt even caused just by the fact that lars is absent, like maybe he’s on vacation or something. its that he, again, died and is still in danger and nobody knows for sure if/when he’ll get back. maybe she wouldn’t’ve started a garage band if that hadn’t happened, but its not like if she had done that and lars was still there, she would definitely be prevented from doing anything involving pursuing her interests, like. idk hopefully nobody thinks that ppl in relationships can’t have independent pursuits or focus on their personal interests
meanwhile there’s no point in saying that anything lars is doing requires sadie’s absence either. its more sort of say the absence of absolutely everyone on earth save steven for a bit there. like sure it was a factor that they got separated the way they did and he felt bad for being too panicky to help her but, same as with sadie, that has nothing to do with benefitting directly from her not being there. and its not like being separated from sadie was the One Reason he was able save everybody and get them all on a spaceship. there was like half a dozen factors there; to suggest if sadie had been there he wouldn’t be able to do this is.....i dont even know...
like fr this whole time for the both of them, the other has been probably the person they’ve been most comfortable being most like themselves around, and not feeling the kind of pressure from each other that generally stifles them in most other situations (like how lars is afraid of how ppl (he presumes negatively) judge him, how sadie feels bound by various expectations for what ppl think she’s really like (but isn’t really like))...the fact that they’re both getting to explore these different sides of themselves isnt really anything they couldnt do back on earth together. the events that happened to separate them (and separate lars from like all of earth...just to reiterate..) just happened to give them a real boost along the lines of making these decisions that impacted their development and gave them these totally new roles within totally new experiences
this is like ppl who have some idea that lars “needed” to die. like, even when its not just ppl who think so badly of lars’s char that they Wanted him to die, but rather looking back on the fact that that happened and he was killed/revived real quick lol—lars didnt Have to do that to have the development of getting to actually fight to protect others and himself and gain some confidence. he wouldve done that whether or not it had actually killed him—when he let the guys scan him without knowing it WOULDNT kill him was arguably enough to give him the same development as if the one hadnt blown up at him suddenly. and i mean, the space piracy is given a fun angle because its cool and genre, but none of them are doing it for fun. they’re trying to get to earth and not fuckin die along the way. lars is getting to continue Experiencing Some Confidence for the first time in probably ever but to present the situation he’s in and how he’s gotten there as something he “needed” is a bit cruel lol...he coulda done that on earth
like yeah if they were both living their normal lives you dont Know that some normal earth event would make them quit and sadie pursue her interests and independence while lars is put in a situation where he feels like he Belongs in a group and has confidence in himself and his ability to do like, anything. but thats coz events sort of just happen at you randomly. like how the event of being attacked by aliens basically led to this for them...it wasnt the Only Way these things could happen, its just The One Way That They Did
and like i also dont quite see that these changes theyve gotten to go through are going to put them in a perfect version of a relationship when lars gets back to earth...they still dont have the longest history of feeling kinda secure in the fact that the other really does actually like them ok, and this whole time theyve been teenz so what do you expect them having a smooth tumult-free development for, and having positive (and negative) experiences separately doesnt just automatically translate into an instantly leveled up relationship the moment they stand within 10 ft of each other again. they gotta catch up and relearn where each other is at and what their new lives and wants and needs are...and just coz their positive development might make it a bit Easier for them if some of their strongest insecurities are a lil blunted now & plus just that being happier tends to make everything easier, doesnt mean that everything is simply effortless. tbh if a relationship is effortless and stays together forever thats less Romantic And Ideal than like, sheer luck.
and it’s unrealistic (in life and in how the show doesnt make a character complete an emotional arc in a single episode or suddenly shed a defining trait just because they realize they ought to change their approach re: something or other) to think that either lars or sadie have like, completely shed all their issues as individuals anyways. and i mean, its their issues that drove them to make these changes theyre currently on. sadie being frustrated with her job, feeling unable to be herself = the motivations that means she’s now really actively pursuing what tf she feels like doing and pushing for it to continue and for it to be in line w what she wants it to be. but she’s not suddenly freed from all insecurities or feeling like everything’s perfect forever and she can never feel stifled again. plus yanno this whole time she freakin misses lars coz they’re friends and that’s not like...something she’s needed to do. absence makes the heart grow fonder but “be apart from each other indefinitely” isnt any kind of a relationship requirement. its just painful and all.
and lars knowing what its like to be afraid all the time and being frustrated abt it means he was so pushed to all at once finally stand up against what he’s scared of that he went and got himself killed, and also that he doesn’t feel the same social pressure he did on earth amongst the off colors, because he knows they know what its like to be scared all the time too—which ppl back on earth didnt understand about him. and so its the fact he’s so familiar with fear and stress that he’s able to fight for them and himself so hard now. but it’s not like you can just Decide your lifelong anxieties out of existence. after a dramatically changing experience, you’re not gonna be the same person you were before, and you’re not gonna be a totally different person. lars isnt some different person unaffected by fears or insecurities anymore. like heck he was still afraid that sadie actually didn’t miss him at all and was maybe even glad that he was gone, something that was completely in line with who he’s been and how he’s felt this whole series. and people go and be annoyed b/c i guess they expect him to just be a character Completely Changed by one dramatic yet brief part of his life rather than a character who’s still just developing and shaped by all his past experiences actually. and who, no, didnt get to choose to shed all fear b/c thats not how it works. he still feels it, he just finally got the taste of taking action anyways. plus even now that he’s not stuck in a crisis over thinking sadie might just hate him now, tbh he does still need to hear it from her that she doesnt lol)
also? tbh? lars’s Whole New Thing has been happening while he’s (mostly) isolated on a spaceship, w just the offcolors and maybe occasional interactions w hostile aliens, which hardly counts as socializing. and sadie’s whole thing of being herself and pursuing her own desires is still happening just around the cool kids really—not to mention all behind a persona. it’s actually not even that like, a lack of confidence = lack of stage fright or vice versa. its a whole other thing for her to stand up for herself and make her own choices in areas that have nothing to do with her band, even though the experiences within the band will help and give her a starting point and something to feel secure in. just like when lars is back on earth and off the ship, he won’t have the same role he has just around the off colors, just being the front of that band in his own, more imperiled, less musical way. and just coz he knows he can hold his own against destructive imperialistic colonizing aliens, doesnt mean he’s gonna be fearless in the face of the cool kids now, or think he can do anything. he’s still faced with the expectations and perceptions from ppl that he did before he left, even if the way ppl act with lars can easily change now. again, just coz things might be easier for the dnuts now doesnt mean they’ve just shrugged off their problems or are now faced with effortless paths in all aspects of their lives
theyve needed a break from the norm they used to have, but Each Other was the least of what was holding them back from changing things up for themselves. it was completely external events as much as anything else that changed things up for them, coz thats how it works sometimes—and within their new circumstances theyve gotten to experience a new situation that lets them be a bit different than they’ve gotten to be back on earth. i mean, they were really restricted. they had the terrible job, both have somewhat strained relationships w parents who dont seem to really understand who their child is, both of them feel pressured by people in general, both have insecurities, both were kind of just faced with a future that didnt involve them being able to just see happiness coming down the line. and it was a big problem for both of them tbh that neither of them really had any friends. sadie was finding it difficult to express herself or be herself, she was always in a scenario where someone (her mom, corporate policy, customers,) expected her to be a certain way that wasnt the real her, she had a crap job, nobody really seemed to know her, her tendency to Hold Back Until You Blow Up could be counterproductive to say the least. lars is stuck in the same job, with nobody thinking he’s particularly good for anything, even his parents not really expecting him to succeed in any way, desperately wanting friends but being too afraid of people to make any, being defensively irritable and pushing people away but unable to be angry on his own behalf. they’re both getting their first chance to be themselves, they’ve both stumbled into Friend Groups where they’re not only respected but supported and even esteemed, they’re both making and acting on choices completely on their own and not being as held back by their fears. but they’re the same people and none of this means the problems they’ve been dealing with are over because of it. they’ve just been forced to adapt to this change that’s come upon them, and they’ve both happened to make the most of it and be getting something positive out of a really crap situation. they could be having these arcs via a different scenario, but it would probably have to be more drawn out if nobody was in fuckin space
getting away from me slightly but its weird to say that lars and sadie Needed to be separated by lightyears thru a horrible experience and one of them is killed and still in space indefinitely. and i dont know how you’d describe what’s happening there as “a break.” that not only implies that they chose to be separated but that they have had the option to be together this whole time and continuously chosen not to, and have considered this whole experience to be a positive thing. an involuntary separation where both really wish they weren’t separated isnt a break. and to say that either of them Need to be separated in this particular way, like, man you know what their relationship needs? someone to be sent an impossible distance away & he died and might die again and might be unable to return. like, no relationship needs that or anything like that. it’d be affected by it sure, and they might be able to find silver linings in it as they have, but its never going to be necessary.....like, fucks sake if it was, how fucked up would that be
again a break would have to be something voluntarily chosen that they believed would be positive for them both, not that they believed would involve mortal peril. and they like, arent enjoying the fact theyre separated. and what the characters are going through is more about their individual developments than how it necessarily applies to their relationship—again i’d argue their relationship was in a decent place actually. not perfect obv, but good...i mean look at how good they both were at recognizing what they were both struggling with re each other. lars didnt Almost Die or anything, until later. and i imagine this stuff is going to help, but not in a “if this hadnt happened their relationship would be doomed” way. and again it is kinda wild to say that any of this might be required of them for any reason, they’re really going thru some shit w all this
anyways 🍩

Jono reviews: Cats Protection
SEOs are, more often than not, “cat people”. That’s no surprise, given that we spend a lot of time online, and given that The Internet Is Made Of Cats. That’s why the first website which I’m looking at in this series belongs to the Cats Protection charity – a UK organization dedicated to feline welfare.
I’m going to explore their website and see where they have issues, errors, and opportunities with their technical SEO. Hopefully, I’ll find some things which they can fix and improve, and thus improve their organic visibility. Maybe we’ll learn something along the way, too.
Not a cat person? Don’t worry! I’ll be choosing a different charity in each post. Let me know who you think I should audit next time in the comments!
Introducing the brand
The Cats Protection homepage
Cats Protection (formally the Cats Protection League, or CPL) describe themselves as the UK’s Largest Feline Welfare Charity. They have over 250 volunteer-run branches, 29 adoption centers, and 3 homing centers. That’s a lot of cats, a lot of people, and a lot of logistics.
Their website (at https://www.cats.org.uk/) reflects this complexity – it’s broad, deep, and covers everything from adoption to veterinary servers, to advice and location listings.
Perhaps because of that complexity, it suffers from a number of issues, which hinder its performance. Let’s investigate, and try to understand what’s going on.
Understanding the opportunity
Before I dive into some of the technical challenges, we should spend some time assessing the current performance of the site. This will help us spot areas which are underperforming, and help us to identify areas which might have issues. We’ll also get a feeling for how much they could grow if they fix those issues.
The ‘Visibility Index’ score (Sistrix) for cats.org.uk, desktop and mobile
I’m using Sistrix to see data on the ‘visibility index‘ for cats.org.uk, for desktop and mobile devices. We can see that the site experienced gradual growth from 2010 until late 2013, but – other than a brief spike in late-2018 (which coincides with Google’s “Medic” update in August)- seems to have stagnated.
Where they’re winning
As we dig into some of the visibility data, you can see that Cats Protection rank very well in the UK for a variety of cat- and adoption-related phrases. Let’s see some examples of where they’re winning.
Keyword # Page lost cat 1 /help-and-advice/lost-a-cat cats adoption 1 /adopt-a-cat buying a cat 1 /adopt-a-cat/[…]adopt-from-us cat reproduction 1 /help[…]/reproduction cat charity 1 / cat protection 1 / cat neutering 1 /what-we-do/neutering neuter cat 1 /what-we-do/neutering buy a cat 1 /adopt-a-cat/[…]adopt-from-us cat help 1 /cat-care/help-and-advice adopting a cat 1 /adopt-a-cat/ready-to-adopt cat org 1 / outdoor cats 1 /uploads/[…]outdoor_cats.pdf heart murmur in cats 1 /uploads/[…]heart_disease.pdf free cat neutering 1 /what-we-do/neutering cats 2 / cat care 2 /cat-care feral cats 2 /help-and-advice/feral-cat cat for adoption 2 /adopt-a-cat cats for adoption 2 /adopt-a-cat cat body language 2 /help[…]/body-language plants poisonous to cats 2 /help[…]/dangerous-plants neutering cats 2 /what-we-do/neutering found cat 2 /help-and-advice/found-a-cat old cats 2 /help-and-advice/elderly-cats cat behaviour problems 2 /[…]behaviour-problems
They’re doing a great job. They’re ranking highly for important, competitive keywords. In almost all cases, the result is a well-aligned page which is a great result, full of useful information.

These kinds of keywords likely account for a large proportion of the visits they receive from search engines. It’s reasonable to assume that they also drive many of their conversions and successful outcomes.
But they’re losing to the competition
It’s not all good news, though. Once you explore beyond the keywords where they’re winning, you can see that they’re often beaten to the top positions on key terms (e.g., “adopt a cat”, where they rank #2).
In cases like this, they’re frequently outranked by one of three main competitors in the search results:
Purina – a cat food manufacturer/retailer.
Blue Cross – a charity dedicated to helping sick, injured and homeless animals
The RSPCA – a general animal welfare and rehoming charity
Now, I don’t want to suggest or imply that any one of these is a better or worse charity, service, or result than Cats Protection. Obviously, each of these (and many more) charities and websites can co-exist in the same space, and do good work. There’s plenty of opportunity for all of them to make the world a better place without directly competing with each other.
Purina’s “Cat Anxiety” page has almost 1,000 words of helpful content.
In fact, for many of the keywords they’re likely to be interested in, the results from each site are equally good. Each of these sites is doing great work in educating, supporting, and charitable activity.
Even Purina, which isn’t a charity, has a website full of high quality, useful, content around cat care.
However, among the major players in this space, Cats Protection has the lowest visibility. Their visibility is dwarfed by Blue Cross and the RSPCA, and the gap looks set to continue to widen. Even Purina’s content appears to be eating directly into Cats Protection market share.
The Visibility Index of Cats Protection vs organic search competitors over time
It’d be a shame if Cats Protection could be helping more cats, but fail to do so because their visibility is hindered by technical issues with their website.
To compete, and to grow, Cats Protection needs to identify opportunities to improve their SEO.
Looking at the long tail
Cats Protection probably doesn’t want to go head-to-head with the RSPCA (or just fight to take market share directly from other charities). That’s why I’ll need to look deeper or elsewhere for opportunities to improve performance and grow visibility.
If the site gets stronger technically, then it’s likely to perform better. Not just against the big players for competitive ‘head’ keywords, but also for long-tail keywords, where they can beat poorer quality resources from other sites.
As soon as you start looking at keywords where Cats Protection has a presence but low visibility, it’s obvious that there are many opportunities to improve performance. Unfortunately, there are some significant architectural and technical challenges which might be holding them back.
I’ve used Sitebulb to crawl the site, and I’ve found three critical issues. These areas contribute significantly to the low (and declining) visibility.
Critical issues
1. The site is fragmented
Every individual branch of the charity appears to get and maintain its own subdomain and own version of the website.
For example, the Glasgow branch maintains what appears to be a close copy of the main website, and both the North London branch and the Birmingham branch both maintain their own divergent ‘local’ versions of the site. Much of the content on these sites is a direct copy of that which is available on the main website.
Fragmentation is harming their performance
This approach significantly limits visibility and potential, as it dilutes the value of each site. In particular;
Search engines usually consider subdomains to be separate websites. It’s usually better to have one big site than to have lots of small websites. With lots of small sites, you risk value and visibility being split between each ‘sub site’.
Content is repeated, duplicated, and diluted; pages that one team produces will often end up competing with pages created by other teams, rather than competing with other websites.
The site doesn’t use canonical URL tags to indicate the ‘main version’ of a given page to search engines. This makes this page-vs-page competition even worse.
This combination of technical and editorial fragmentation means that they’re spread too thin. None of the individual sites, or their pages, are strong enough to compete against larger websites. That means they get fewer visits, less engagement, and fewer links.
You can see some examples below where fragmentation is a huge issue for search engines. Google – in its confusion between the multiple sites and duplicate pages – continually switches the rankings and ranking pages for competitive terms between different versions. This weakens the performance and visibility of these pages, and the overall site(s).
Google continually switches the ranking page(s) for competitive keywords
Rankings for “adopt a kitten” continually fluctuate between competing pages
If Cats Protection consolidated their efforts and their content, they might have a chance. Otherwise, other brands will continue to outperform them with fewer, but stronger pages.
Managing local vs general content
While it makes sense to enable (and encourage) local branches to produce content which is specifically designed for local audiences, there are better ways to do this.
They could achieve the same level of autonomy and localization by just using subfolders for each branch. Those branches could create locale-specific content within those page trees. ‘Core’ content could remain a shared, centralized asset, without the need to duplicate pages in each section.
At the moment, their site and server configuration actually appears to be set up to allow for a subdomain-based approach. https://birmingham.cats.org.uk/, for example, appears to resolve to the same content as https://www.cats.org.uk/birmingham. It seems that they’ve just neglected to choose which version they want to make the canonical, and/or to redirect the other version.
They’ve also got some additional nasty issues where:
The non-HTTPS version of many of the subdomains resolves without redirecting to the secure version. That’s going to be fragmenting their page value even further.
Requests to any subdomain resolve to the main site; e.g., http://somerandomexample.cats.org.uk/ returns the homepage. Aside from further compounding their fragmentation issues, this opens them up to some nasty negative SEO attack vectors.
There are frequent HTTPS/security problems when local branches link (or are linked to) including the ‘www’ component and the location subdomain (e.g., https://www.vuildford.cats.org.uk/learn/e-learning-ufo).
Incidentally, if Cats Protection were running on WordPress (they’re on a proprietary CMS running on ASP.NET), they’d be a perfect fit for WordPress multisite. They’d be able to manage their ‘main’ site while allowing teams from each branch to produce their own content in neat, organized, local subfolders. They could also manage access, permissions, and how shared content should behave. And of course, the Yoast SEO plugin would take care of canonical tags, duplication, and consolidation.
Canonical URL tags to the rescue
While resolving all of these fragmentation issues feels like a big technical challenge, there might be an easy win for Cats Protection. If they add support for canonical tags, they could tell Google to consolidate the links and value on shared pages back to the original. That way each local site can contribute to the whole, while maintaining its own dedicated pages and information.
That’s not a perfect solution, but it’d go some way to arresting the brand’s declining visibility. Regardless of their approach to site structure, they should prioritize adding support and functionality for canonical URL tags. That way they can ensure that they aren’t leaking value between duplicate and multiple versions of pages. That would also allow them to pool resources on improving the performance of key, shared content.

The great news is, because they’re running Google Tag Manager, they could insert canonical URL tags without having to spend development resources. They could just define triggers and tags through GTM, and populate the canonical tags via JavaScript. This isn’t best practice, but it’s a lot better than nothing!
2. Their best content is buried in PDFs
In many of the cases where Cats Protection is outranked by other charities or results, it’s because some of its best content is buried in PDF files like this one.
A high-quality resource about cat dental health, in a PDF
PDFs typically perform poorly in search results. That’s because they can be harder for search engines to digest, and provide a comparatively poor user experience when clicked from search results. That means that they’re less likely to be linked to, cited or shared. This seriously limits the site’s potential to rank for competitive keywords.
As an example, this excellent resource on cat behavior currently ranks in position #5, behind Purina (whose content is, in my personal opinion, not even nearly as good or polished), and behind several generic content pages.
The information in here is deeper, more specific, and better written than many of the resources which outrank it. But its performance is limited by its format.
If this were a page (and was as well-structured and well-presented as the PDF), it would undoubtedly create better engagement and interaction. That would drive the kinds of links and shares which could lead to significantly increased visibility. It would also benefit from being part of a networked hub of pages, linking to and being linked from related content.
A great resource in its own right, this PDF links to a bunch of even more in-depth PDF resources!
Amazingly, this particular PDF is also only a summary. It references other, more specific PDFs throughout, which are of equally high quality. But it doesn’t link to them, so search engines struggle to discover or understand the connections between the documents.
This is just the tip of the iceberg. There are dozens of these types of PDFs, and hundreds of scenarios where they’re being outranked by lower quality content. This is costing Cats Protection significant visibility, visits, and adoptions.
Aside from being easier to style (outside of the constraints of rigid website templates and workflows), there’s very little reason to produce web content in this manner. This type of content should be produced in a ‘web first’ manner, and then adapted as necessary for other business purposes.
How bad is it?
To demonstrate the severity of the issues, I’ve looked at several examples of where PDFs rank for potentially important keywords.
In the following table, I’ve used Sistrix to filter down to only see keywords where the ranking URL is a PDF, and it contains the word “new” (i.e., “new cat”, “get a new kitten”). These are likely to represent the kinds of searches people make when deciding to adopt. You can see that Cats Protection frequently ranks relatively poorly and that these PDFs aren’t particularly effective as landing pages.
Keyword # PDF acclimating a new cat 3 EG02_Welcome_home.pdf getting a new cat 4 EG02_Welcome_home.pdf looking after a new kitten 4 EG15_Caring_for_your_kitten.pdf having a new kitten 5 EG02_Welcome_home.pdf new kitten 6 EG02_Welcome_home.pdf new kitten care 6 EG15_Caring_for_your_kitten.pdf new kitten tips 8 EG02_Welcome_home.pdf getting a new kitten 8 EG02_Welcome_home.pdf how to take care of a new kitten 9 EG15_Caring_for_your_kitten.pdf how to take care of your new kitten 10 EG15_Caring_for_your_kitten.pdf new kitten advice 12 EG15_Caring_for_your_kitten.pdf
This tiny subset of keywords represents over 1,000 searches per month in the UK. That’s 1000 scenarios where Cats Protection inadvertently provides a poor user experience and loses to other, often lower quality resources.
And value might not even be getting to those resources…
Many of the links to these resources appear to route through an internal URL shortener – likely a marketing tool for producing ‘pretty’ or shorter URLs than the full-length file locations.
E.g., https://www.cats.org.uk/-behaviour-topcatpart1 redirects to https://www.cats.org.uk/uploads/documents/Behaviour_-_Top_cat_part_1.pdf, with a 302 redirect code.
This is common practice on many sites, and usually not a problem – except, in this case, resources redirect via a 302 redirect. They should change this to a 301; otherwise, there’s a chance that any equity which might have flowed through the link to the PDF gets ‘stuck’ at the redirect.
It’s not too late!
The good news is, it’s not too late to convert these into pages and to alter whichever internal workflows and processes currently exist around these resources. That will almost certainly improve the rankings, visibility, and traffic for these kinds of keywords.
Except, upon investigation, you can see from the URL path that it looks like all of these assets were produced in 2013. My guess is that these PDFs were commissioned as a batch, and haven’t been updated or extended since. That goes some way to explaining the format, and why they’re so isolated. Their creation was a one-off project, rather than part of the day-to-day activities of the site and marketing teams.
There’s more opportunity here
The ‘Veterinary Guides’ page on cats.org.uk just links out to PDF files.
Because much of the key content is tucked away in PDF files, the performance of many of the site’s ‘hub’ pages is also limited. Sections like this one, which should be the heart of a rich information library, is simply a set of links pointing out to aging PDF files. That limits the likelihood that people will engage, link, share or use these pages.
This a shame, because Cats Protection could choose to compete strategically on the quality of these assets. They could go further; produce more, make them deeper and better, and refine their website templating system to allow them to present them richly and beautifully. This could go a long way toward helping them reclaim lost ground from Purina and other competitors.
At the very least, they should upgrade the existing PDFs into rich, high-quality pages.
Once they’ve done that, they should update all of the links which currently point to the PDF assets, to point at the new URLs. Lastly, they should set a canonical URL on the PDF files via an HTTP header (you can’t insert canonical URL meta/link tags directly into PDFs) pointing at the new page URL.
Not only would that directly impact the performance and visibility of that content, but it’ll also help them to build relevance and authority in the ‘hub’ pages, like their veterinary guides section.
3. Their editorial and ‘marketing’ content is on the wrong website
While this is primarily a technical audit, bear with me as I talk briefly about content and tone of voice. I believe that technical issues and constraints have played a significant role in defining the whole brand’s tone of voice online, and not for the better.
Because, surprisingly for such an emotive ‘product’, much of the content on the website might be considered to be ‘dry’; perhaps even a bit ‘corporate’.
In order to attract and engage visitors (and to encourage them to cite, link and share content – which is critical for SEO performance), content needs to have a personality. It needs to stand for something and to have an opinion. Pages have to create an emotional response. Of course, Cats Protection do all of this, but they do it on the wrong website.
Much of their emotive content lives on a dedicated subdomain (the ‘Meow blog‘), where it rarely sees the light of day.
Emotive and ‘real world’ content lives on the ‘Meow blog’
It’s another fragmentation issue
The Meow blog runs on an entirely separate CMS from the main site (Blogger/Blogspot). This site is also riddled with technical issues and flaws – not to mention the severely limited stylistic, layout and presentation options. This site gets little traffic or attention, and very few links/likes/shares. Much of its content competes with – and is beaten by – dryer content on the main site.
Heartwarming stories about re-homing kittens abound on the Meow blog
But the blog is full of pictures of cats, rescue and recovery stories from volunteers and adopters, and warm ‘from the front line’ editorial content. This is the kind of content you’d want to read before deciding whether or not to engage with Cats Protection, and it should be part of the core user journey. Today, most users miss this entirely.
We can see from the following table, which shows the site’s highest rankings, that their content gets very little traction. The site only ranks in the top 100 results of Google for 258 keywords, and only ranks in the top ten for 5 of those. Nobody who is searching for exactly the kinds of things which Cats Protection should have an opinion on – and be found for – is arriving here.
Keyword # URL how much does it cost to neuter a cat 4 /[…]cost-of-getting-cat-neutered.html do i need to vaccinate my indoor cat 6 /[…]do-indoor-cats-need-boosters-vaccinations.html do cats need booster shots 7 /[…]do-indoor-cats-need-boosters-vaccinations.html the kittens 9 /[…]kitten-watch-kittens-in-new-homes.html how to show affection to your cat 9 /[…]5-ways-to-show-your-cat-you-love-them.html why doesn’t my cat purr 10 /[…]why-doesnt-my-cat-purr-veterinary-faqs.html do indoor cats need vaccinations 10 /[…]do-indoor-cats-need-boosters-vaccinations.html cat lovers blog 11 /[…]top-books-for-cat-lovers.html becoming a cat behaviorist 11 /[…]careers-with-cats-cat-behaviourist.html cat ideal weight 14 /[…]cats-ideal-weight-veterinary-faqs.html
Furthermore, this separation means that where personality is ‘injected’ into core site pages, the stark contrast can make it feels artificial and contrived. It often reads like ‘marketing content’ when compared with the flat tone of the content around it.
Why is the blog on a different system?
Typically, this kind of separation occurs when a CMS hasn’t properly anticipated (or otherwise can’t support) ‘editorial’ content; blog posts and articles which are authored, categorized, media-rich, and so forth. These are different types of requirements and functions from a website which just supports ‘pages’, or which has been designed and built to serve a very specific set of requirements.
As a result, a marketing team will typically create and maintain a separate ‘blog’, often separated from the main site. This can cripple the performance of those companies’ marketing and reach, as the blog never inherits the authority of the main site (and therefore, has little visibility), and fails to deliver against marketing and commercial goals. This often leads to abandonment, and over-investment in marketing in rented channels, like Facebook. Speculatively, it looks like this is exactly what’s happened here.
Conversely, either through poor training and management or outright rebellion, some teams prefer to publish ‘blog-like’ content as static articles within the constraints and confines of their local branch news sections. These attempts, lacking the kind of architecture, framework, and strategy which a successful blog requires, also fail to perform. Here’s an example from the Brighton branch.
The Brighton branch rolling out their own ‘blog’ solution
From a technical perspective, the main site should be able to house this content on the same domain, as part of the same editorial and structural processes which manage their ‘main’ content. If the separation of the blog from the main site is due to technical constraints inherent in the main site, this is a devastating failure of planning, scoping and/or budgeting. It’s limited their ability to attract and engage audiences, to integrate and showcase their personality into their main site content, and to convert more of their audience to donation, adoption or other outcomes.
While fixing some of the technical issues we’ve spotted should result in immediate improvements to visibility, the long-term damage of this separation of content types will require years of effort to undo.
This is something which WordPress gets right at a deep architectural level. The core distinction between ‘pages’ and ‘posts’ (as well as support for custom post types, custom/shared, and post capability management) is hugely powerful and flexible. Other platforms could learn a lot from studying how WordPress solves exactly this kind of problem.
Regardless of their choice of platform(s), Cats Protection need to have a solid strategy for how they seamlessly house and integrate blog content with ‘core’ site content in a way which aligns with technical and editorial best practice.
4. Serious technical SEO standards abound
I understand that as a charity, Cats Protection has limited budget and resource to invest in their website. It’s unreasonable to expect their custom-built site to be completely perfect when it comes to technical SEO, or to adhere 100% to cutting edge standards.

However, the gap between ‘current’ and ‘best’ performance is wide – enough that I’d be remiss in our review not to point out some of the more severe issues which I’ve identified.
I’ve spotted dozens of issues throughout the site which are likely impacting performance, ranging from severe problems with how the site behaves, to minor challenges with individual templates or pages.
Individually, many of these problems aren’t serious enough to cause alarm. Collectively, however, they represent one of the biggest factors limiting the site’s visibility.
I’ve highlighted the issues which I think represent the biggest opportunities – those which, if fixed, should help to unlock increased performance worth many times the resource invested in resolving them.
Many pages and templates are missing title, description or H1 tags
Page titles and meta descriptions are hugely important for SEO. They’re an opportunity to describe the focus of the page, and to optimize your ‘advert’ (your organic listing) in search engines. H1 tags act as the primary heading for a page, and help users and search engines to know where they are, and what a page is about.
Not having these tags is a serious omission, and can severely impact the performance of a page.
Many important pages on the site (like the “Adopt a cat” page) are missing titles, descriptions and headings, which is likely impacting the visibility of and traffic to many key pages.
Source code from the ‘Adopt a cat’ page, which is missing a title and description
As well as harming performance, omitting titles often forces Google to try and make its own decisions – often with terrible effect. The following screenshot is from a search result for the ‘Kittens’ page – the site’s main page for donation signups. An empty title tag and missing <h1> heading tag has caused Google to think that the title should be ‘Cookie settings’.
Google incorrectly assumes the page title should be ‘Cookie settings’
There are hundreds of pages where this, and similar issues are occurring.
A good CMS should provide controls for editors and site admins to craft titles, descriptions, and headings. But the site should also automatically generate a sensible default title, description and primary heading for any template or page where there’s nothing manual specified (based on the name and content of the page). Needless to say, this is one of the core features in Yoast SEO!
Errors and content retirement processes are poorly managed
Requests for invalid URLs (such as https://www.cats.org.uk/this-is-an-example) frequently return a 200 HTTP header status. That tells Google that everything is okay and that the page is explicitly not an error. Every time somebody moves or deletes a page, they create more ‘error’ pages.
As a result, Google is frequently confused about what constitutes an actual error, and many error pages are incorrectly indexed.
Is this an error page? The 200 HTTP header says not.
This further dilutes the performance of key pages, and the site overall.
A ‘raw’ server error generated from an invalid .aspx URL
Then again, at least this page provides links and routes back into the main content. Other types of errors (such as those generated by requesting invalid URL structures like this one, which ends in .aspx) return a ‘raw’ server error, which although it correctly returns a 404 HTTP header status, is essentially a dead end to search engines. Needless to say, that negatively impacts performance.
The poor error management here also makes day-to-day site management much harder. Tools like Google Search Console, which report on erroneous URLs and offer suggestions, are rendered largely useless due to the ambiguity around what constitutes a ‘real’ 404 error. That makes undergoing a process of identifying, resolving and/or redirecting these kinds of URLs pretty much impossible. The site is constantly leaking, and accruing technical debt.
A ‘live’ adoption listing page
And it’s not just deleted or erroneous URLs; the site handles dynamic and retired content poorly. When a cat has been adopted, the page which used to have information about it now returns a 200 HTTP header status and a practically empty page.
An invalid ‘cid’ parameter in the URL returns an empty page, but a 200 HTTP header status
Every time Cats Protection list, or unlist a cat for adoption, they create new issues and grow their technical debt.
Their careers subdomain has the opposite problem; pages are seemingly never removed, and just build up over time. This wastes resources on crawling, indexing, and equity. Expired jobs should be elegantly retired (and the URLs redirected) after they expire. Properly retiring old jobs (or, at least their markup) is a requirement if Cats Protection want to take advantage enhanced search engine listings from resulting from implementing schema markup for jobs.
A job listing which expired in May 2018, but which is still accessible and indexed by Google
Issues like this crop up throughout their whole ecosystem. Value is constantly ‘leaking’ out of their site as a result. To prevent this, they need to ensure that invalid requests return a consistent, ‘friendly’ 404 page, with an appropriate HTTP status. They also need to implement processes which make sure that content expiry, movement, and deletion processes redirect or return appropriate HTTP status (something which the Redirect Manager in Yoast SEO Premium handles automatically).
Oher areas
In my opinion, these issues represent some of the biggest (technical SEO) barriers to growth which the brand faces. These are just the tip of the iceberg, but until they address and resolve them, fixing a million tiny issues page-by-page isn’t going to move the needle. I could definitely dig deeper, into areas like site speed (why haven’t they adopted HTTP/2?), their .NET implementation (why are they still using ViewState blocks?) and the overall UX – but this is already a long post.
There is, however, just one last area I’d like to consider.
A light at the end of the tunnel?
In researching and evaluating the platform, I couldn’t help but notice a link in the footer to the agency who designed and built the website – MCN NET. Excitingly, their homepage contains the following block of content:
After a very tense and nerve-racking tender process we were thrilled to hear that we had once again being nominated as the preferred supplier for the redevelopment of the Cats Protection website. This complex and feature rich website is scheduled to make its debut in 2019, so be sure to keep an eye out for it. It’ll be Purrrfect.
Hopefully, that means that many of the problems I’ve identified have already been solved. Hopefully.
Except, that’s perhaps a little ambitious. I don’t know the folks at MCN, and I don’t know what the brief, budget or scope they received was like when they built the current site. As I touched on earlier, charities don’t have money to burn on building perfect websites, and maybe what they got was the right balance of cost and quality for them, at the time. I’m certainly not suggesting that it’s solely MCN’s fault that the Cats Protection website suffers from these issues.
However, my many years of experience in and around web development has given me have a well-earned nervousness around .NET and Microsoft technologies, and a deep distrust of custom-built and proprietary content management systems.
That’s because, in my opinion, all of the issues I’ve pointed out in this article are basic. Arguably, they’re not even really SEO things – they’re just a “build a decent website which works reasonably well” level of standards. I recognize that, in part, that’s because the open source community – and WordPress, and Yoast, in particular – has made these the standards. And proprietary solutions and custom CMS platforms often struggle to keep up with to the thousands of improvements which the open source community contributes every month. If the current website is reaching its end of life, it’s not surprising that it’s creaking at the seams.
With a new website coming, I hope that all of this feedback can be taken on board, and the problems resolved. I understand the commercial realities which mean that ‘best’ isn’t achievable, but they could achieve a lot just by going from ‘bad’ to ‘good’.
With that in mind, if I were working for or on behalf of Cats Protection, I’d want to be very clear about the scope of the new website. I’d want detailed planning and documentation round its functionality, and the baseline level of technical quality required. Of course, that will have cost and resource implications, but the new site will have to work a lot harder than the current one. Cats Protection are competing in an aggressive, crowded market, full of strong competitors. The stability of their foundations will make the difference between winning and losing.
I’d also want to have a very clear plan in place for the migration strategy from the current website to a new website. Migrations of this size and complexity, when handled poorly, have been known to kill businesses.
Every existing page, URL and asset will need to be redirected to a new home. Given the types of fragmentation issues, errors and orphaned assets we’ve seen, this is a huge job. Even mapping out and creating that plan – never mind executing it – feels like a mammoth task.
Hopefully, this is all planned out, and in good hands. I can’t wait to see what the new site looks like, and how it boosts their visibility.
Summary
Cats Protection is a strong brand, doing good work, crippled by the condition of its aging and fragmented website. Other charities and brands are eating into its market share and visibility with worse content and marketing. They’re able to do this, in part, because they have stronger technical platforms.
Some of the technical decisions Cats Protection has made around its content strategy have caused long-term harm. The fragmentation of local branches and the separation of the blog have seriously limited their performance.
A disclaimer
Neither the author nor Yoast BV is in any way related to, representing, commissioned by or acting on behalf of Cats Protection. All content is the opinion of the author. Our assessment aims to educate the public through assessing real-world scenarios.
All of the content, information, and media we have explored is from publically available tools and sources. It is in no way privileged and was correct (to the best of our knowledge) at the time of writing. We acknowledge that we have only reviewed part of Cats Protection’s ecosystem and publically assessable marketing activities (and have deliberately focused on identifying issues and faults), and that our findings aren’t necessarily inclusive or representative of other/overall activity and performance.
The findings of this article should not be construed as professional advice, and we will be held in no way responsible for the outcome of actions taken (or inaction) based on the contents of this article.
In no way do we intend to judge, either positively or negatively, on the decisions, performance, or operations of Cats Protection, their website, partners, suppliers or personnel.
‘Fixing’ this could take years, even if the right foundations are put in place with the new site structure. Cats Protection will need to change the way it thinks about, produces and manages content, too.
The quality of their new website will have a significant impact on their future success. They must also carefully manage the process under which it is launched, otherwise they risk disaster.
This is a lot to tackle. And as a charity, they undoubtedly have limited budgets to achieve the necessary levels of quality, strategy, and functionality.
If you’ve read this far, perhaps you can help them better prepare for and invest in getting this right. Help them continue their mission of helping change the lives of cats and kittens – by donating to their cause.
Thanks for reading. Let me know if I’ve missed anything serious (or got anything wrong!) in the comments, or let me know which charity you’d like me to consider for my next review!

This approach significantly limits visibility and potential, as it dilutes the value of each site. In particular;

Can I get some advice about car insurance?
My and my wife are both insured on our car (Fully Comp.) and we are now about to get another car due to our work situation. I am currently the registered keeper of our current car and I am the policy holder for it as well. I would be driving the new one when I get it and my wife would take over driving the current one. ""Insurance says case is closed, is it really?""
A little over a year ago, I was in a car wreck and due to financial responsibility laws I had to pay for the accident. (I had no insurance, of course, I've learned this lesson) Recently they've filed suit against me for more money that they didn't receive from the insurance company. I can't afford an attorney and was about to hire a bankruptcy lawyer for all of this, but I recently found out from the insurance company that the case is closed. It's also been over a year as of a couple days ago and due to Tennessee's Statute of Limitations they can't claim any more money. So my question, the insurance company says it's closed and even said the attorney settling with them has closed the case. I call the opposing attorney myself and of course they say they can't discuss the case with me, even though I'm just asking if the case still actually exists. They wont' give me a court date either so naturally, I'm a bit suspicious. Should I be ready to put this behind me, or do law offices do this sort of thing all the time? They were recently paid out $10,000 from the insurance company I'm making payments to. I really don't see where else they could find money given my situation. All answers are appreciated, thank you!""

Is it true that if you have full coverage insurance on a rental car... (please look inside)?
They can't ban you from renting from there for the rest of your life? OK. Back in 2005, I rented a car from Enterprise with FULL coverage insurance. 1 day I was on my way to school because I had a deadline to turn in a research paper that was 30% of our grade, & my sister 2x my age locked me in the house on purpose & thought it was funny. I got in the car, & drove it to school, & I panicked & got into a wreck & the car crashed into a tiny tree on the median. It was only a fender bender. But the company tried to say it was totaled for over $2,000 worth of damage. Everyone else who saw, said it was a fender bender. The twigs got inside the light on the left side of the front of the car. But that could've easily been fixed. Not sure. But the wheel alignment was messed up. Does that mean the car is totaled? What does TOTAL a car mean? That it couldn't be fixed? Well, I was just talking about it today, & a lot of people online had ganged up on me & attacked me. Now I'm feeling sad & hurt. About to cry. & they were calling me dumb, irresponsible, etc. Very hostile & angry @ me. They act like I wrecked THEIR personal car! People get into accidents all the time. Anxiety disorder or not. & they were saying that since I had full coverage, I shouldn't have been banned. & they were saying my story didn't make sense. But people look for any & every reason to discriminate against me. It's not fair.""

I was thinking about buying a 2001 chevy camaro that my friend is selling. I wanted to purchase the car but my mom said I shouldnt because the insurance for the car would be too much. I'm 18 years old. I also know that different insurance companies will have different prices. Just wanted to know if anyone can tell me around how much I would paying. Thank you for your time
