PRESERVING THE LOST ART OF TALL SHIP SEAMANSHIP You may have heard that Lady Washington is considered a Square Rigged boat. The term is often confused as referring to the shape of the sails. In fact, Lady’s sails are trapezoidal in shape. The ‘Square’ in Square-Rigged refers to the sails, or theyards they are fixed to, being square to the boat. In other words, they run side to side on the boat rather than forward and aft as they do on schooners or modern-day sailboats.

It is a wonder how we have gone from square-rigged ships with their multitude of sails, to modern simplified sails found on many recreational sailboats found today. With that said, we can take a step back in time and see that our ancient sailing ancestors around the world understood that larger sails provided more power. With the progress of time and trade larger boats were required, but our seafaring forefathers understood that the size of the sail could not increase beyond the ability of the crew to handle the power of an oversized sail. The solution, add more sails! Smaller and more manageable sails that multiplied on masts of the day, not only helped the crew, but also gave the captains more options of sails to choose from. With the creation of mechanical winches, stronger line and sail materials, fewer sails and lines quickly became the more desirable modern fore-aft sail rigging. Although ships became faster, more efficient, and required less crew, the traditional sailors of the square-rigged ships became fewer in number. It is said there are fewer people today who know how to sail square-rigged tall ships than there are tall ships around the world.
