His gaze flicked to his gold watch, the movement brief, deliberate. “And I don’t like being taken for granted.”

the median American voter is misinformed on a lot of things, and also kinda paranoid. The fact that she was a DA, ran on border security, etc doesn’t move the needle as much as the overall association the democrats have with the 2020 unrestrained summer fun, and the fact that there are a shitload more immigrants around than there were ten years ago.

So yes, she ran a centrist campaign in many ways, but the overall association a lot of people have with the Dems is “full steam ahead on immigration, soft on crime, etc” and it freaks them out. You see a lot of stuff floating around about how bad street crime has gotten in California or NYC, and that scares people.

Weirdly, I think the Cheney endorsement hurt her with everyone. Idk who thought touting that was a good idea. There are like six people who still like Dick Cheney in this country
