Any tips on how to draw Poppy's hair without it looking like a legit tree? I'm struggling so hard and it's making it impossible to draw any Broppy art because of it 😔

I finally got some time to put together somewhat of an answer for this?? Again, I'm not so great at explaining things so I'll do my absolute best!

I used to struggle so much with drawing her ponytail, a lot of my older art bothers me tbh because I don't like how I approached drawing her ponytail. I tried looking up images from the movies and even the video game, and I experimented with a few different methods. I actually found that the Poppy ornaments I have on my desk served as the most solid reference material I could have. So I studied the figure and have been incorporating that into my newer works, and it absolutely changed how I approached drawing it.

Here are some photos I took from different angles to really show off the shapes, second image is how I visualize it when drawing. Thinking of the hair as "pieces" or "tufts" really help, and breaking them down between foreground and the background.

Try practicing off these images and see if it shifts the way you draw hair! Tracing helps too because it helps your brain just figure out shape language. After doing some traceovers, I then just tried sketching some very quick Poppy pony's and it already felt a lot better

I personally feel like thinking of the hair this way really sells the volume of it, as well as showing that it's soft and fluffy as opposed to strands of hair.

But yeah! That's how I do it. The more you draw it over and over the more it starts to become natural!

In that sense, since I can draw the GESTURE of hands, I don’t really care if they do anything more than tell you what the swan is holding. The theory is that if it’s good enough to understand what’s in the picture, we can just move on. But here I was just like, as I’m always like, “haha it’s true, I can’t draw swords lmao. But I never let that stop me!”

However I some reflection and I did use this as a fundraiser, so I felt slightly obligated to try slightly harder and not be such a hypocrite.

In the interest of honestly continuous artistic improvement, here is an artistic exploration of Swanne d’Arc where I tried more sincerely to draw hands and swords.

You can see that I am NOT resting on my laurels and remain driven by the tireless urge to improve.

When you draw do you draw zoomed out so you can see the whole thing or do you zoom in on it. I zoom in and my drawings always end up looking too big or too close up so I can never draw multiple people in one drawing its too hard to squeeze them in. I can’t do the thing where you don’t have to move the canvas around😔

I do the global sketch zoomed out so I can place all my characters properly, and then I zoom so damn much into my drawings, it's indecent.

Usually though after each step I zoom out to take in the big picture, and then zoom back in to start another portion. I basically play yo-yo with my canvas haha

I regularly have proportion problems too due to that, it's not rare for me to have to resize the head because it's too big or too small.

Don't hesitate to use the lasso and juggle with your proportions if you see they are wonky. It's hard to get everything right on the first attempt and we got scaling tools to ease our lives! Let's use them!

(I also draw eyes on a different layer so I can move them around and change their angling to place them properly. I'm so bad at making proportions I swear)

you’re inspirationless as you work a dark case at your hometown’s police precinct, and when the BAU is called in, you’ve suddenly found your muse in the team. your sketchbook spreads started out diverse, drifting from member to member, but as the week went on and they had yet to solve the case, your pages were increasingly filled with many angles of one face in particular. something about the eternally furrowed brow, the strong and set jaw, the increasingly fatigued but determined focus, the sharp nose that kept scrunching ever so slightly with concentration (or maybe it was frustration. or headaches) as the nights dragged on, the defined curves of his neck as he straightened or, occasionally, loosened his tie, all of it really…he really drew your attention…among other things. you captured every bit of him you could onto paper, everything except for his eyes. you never spent more time on his eyes than you had to, because you knew deep down that if you did, you’d fall apart right then and there, for reasons you couldn’t really explain

i’m getting carried away with the setup again. this is already a massive paragraph too long. point is, eventually (as a matter of fact, on the day the case is finally closed,) you get caught by the SSA himself. but before you get the chance to be embarrassed and apologize profusely for your creepage, Hotch asks you to join him and the team for celebration drinks so you can both further…discuss your talents. you can’t meet his eyes, but of course, you accept. this devolves and escalates, and ultimately he asks you to join him in his hotel room, where things spiral even more.

Especially with ykz because I’m terrified of people thinking that I’m mischaracterizinf them or that I’m cringe 😔 it is so hard for me to know what I want from my artwork and I think everything I draw is so boring and mediocre and TERRIBLE!! I think just. Drawing more would fix this. Maybe if I wasn’t sick all the time. I miss filling sketchbooks in a couple weeks and drawing whatveer made me feel good. subject that’s a pain to draw is probably perspective. I HATE perspective.

7 sooo many mediums man. My main go to is pencil or digital so I have mad respect for anyone who is able to do anything besides that. I’ve touch like markers and colored pencils and the occasional paints but I’m no where close to the genius of people like @threegoblinart (<3)

10 oooo I LOVE clothing! All of it lol. It’s all fun. Though I hate when I’m doing sketches on paper and then I gotta erases the body lines for like folds and baggy clothing 😔

12 it’s all about how you draw it and what ur drawing. But id probably say (lower) torso/midsection. Its pretty simple and blocky from almost every angle without and super complicated anatomy things like eyes, hands, etc do

20 hmmmmm. I have to think for this one. I’d say maybe..hands? [gunshots and jeering] I KNOW I KNOW! I’ve spent probably hours on end drawing hands to the point where I’m pretty good at visualizing how they go. I only hate them when they’re in a weird position/perspective like finger guns towards the viewer or stuff like that

21 I don’t even have any idea what I’m gonna say how do you know-

honestly most art styles besides my own. Art is all about copying tbh. 99% of art styles are all built from other parts of other peoples art. Animated movies and shows, comics, and stuff like that really gave me my style. It’s like frankenstein lol

26 uhhhhhh I don’t know? I feel like most of my art has very direct interpretation. I think there’s one I had that had a really interesting opinion but I can’t seem to remember what it is 🤷

29 idk if you mean media as in form of art or as in form of entertainment but I’ll answer both: For forms of art I think painting is really cool. It’s gorgeous and physical and the stroke and beauty of it just makes me want to nom nom; for forms of entertainment I’d say I’m pretty much inspired by most of the things I watch/read. Inspiration comes from everywhere.
