There's just something about the captain that makes me think about all of the different lgbtqia+ people throughout history that never got their happy endings. All the people who couldn't live openly, or freely be themselves (today too of course). And it makes me really sad:(

I think it's because of just how "normal" he seems, he's literally just some boring old guy (affectionate). We see him do regular things (as regular as you can get when you're a ghost), he just seems so real. He wasn't exceptionate, he didn't really have a very grand life or love story. He seems like someone that probably could've existed, which is amazing character wise and also just really sad that so many people here in the real world haven't or won't ever get their happy ending in their lifetime.

Engaging in fandom spaces, whether it's art or writing or edits or another form of expression, comes from a place of genuine passion. It's creating for the love of creating, because you deeply care about the media. And that's terrifying.

That kind of vulnerability is stressful! It gets easy to wonder if you're just being stupid, to think that nothing you've done is as good as other people's so you might as well just quit. It's made worse by the the types of numerical validation you see on every site, even here. No one else cares about what you're making, the numbers prove it, so why should you?

But here's the thing. The impact you're leaving cannot be measured by numbers. I'm speaking from experience. Until recently, I never even had accounts for engaging with the content I enjoyed. I would hang around Tumblr and Twitter and AO3, completely anonymously, and it was amazing. I've read fics that have brought me to tears, that have been some of the most beautiful pieces of fiction I've ever read, period. And the authors would never have known!

And maybe it does seem a touch selfish not to share around content I enjoyed to give it more traction, and maybe I should have done better, but once again, fandom spaces are scary. The longer I spend in them, the more I realize that other people feel the same way! There are so many people out there, waiting for every new post, enthusing over every little thing you make, who you don't even know exist.

The whole point of a fandom is that it's a community. We're all here for the same reasons. For as long as you make fan content, there will always be someone out there to appreciate it.

So like, the historical accuracy in The Owl House is actually amazing and I'm very not normal about it. Warning, this will be long and somewhat rambling, I am a history nerd with a particular interest in the witch craze, and I have thoughts, and I'm making that everyone's problem.

So the first thing is, Luz's home town of Gravesfield is in Connecticut. In said town, there is a statue of Phillip and Caleb, either because they founded it or, as I'm starting to suspect, a memorial for them, since they disappeared. Either way, Phillip and Caleb are from 1600s Connecticut. Now, everyone's heard of the Salem witch trials. But what a lot of people don't know, is that there was a series of witch trials almost 30 years before that. The Connecticut Witch Trials, that occurred from 1647 - 1663, were the first large-scale witch trials in the American colonies. I think we can safely assume that this was the specific witch trials that Phillip and Caleb participated in. And just, the accuracy here. Dana Terrace is purposely alluding to a specific set of witch trials, and I think its pretty neat.

Secondly, you can see the Puritan influence in the way that Belos rules. The way he pretends to be a sort of prophet for a divine being, The Titan. He uses statements like "The Titan has big plans for you" and "The will of The Titan", because they mirror Christian ideas about God, and predestination. Now, this is interesting enough, but it becomes even more so when you take into account that Belos was a Puritan colonist, and one thing that Puritan colonists were known to do, was try to convert Native Americans to Christianity. Belos' attitudes to the Witches and Demons of the Boiling Isles not only convey colonial ideas attitudes to witches, but also colonial attitudes to the natives of the countries they invaded. And the scariest part is, Belos was actually successful. He managed to secretly and efficiently convert the people of the Boiling Isles into believing that the Titan is a Deity. He managed to take the giant corpse that everyone was living on, and turn in into a twisted version of the Christian God.

Why do bug movies so frequently look like THAT! Especially from the early 2000s.

And why are they always about the colonial hymenopterans? (ants and bees mainly, and wasps are basically always antagonistic to a degree.)

I mean I guess they’re the closest thing to human society, but they have such a different social system to us!

Why must they give them unnerving and uncanny human eyes and mouths to them?

For those colony bug movies, why why why do the research on colony structure and behaviours sprinkle in jokes and world building elements using them (like with ants keeping/using aphids), when you still make them have a 1:1 MALE TO FEMALE RATIO IN THE COLONY!!!?!?

Perhaps research on this stuff was hard to come by then? Yet they could still, literally call up some entomologist or person who works with bugs and get the bloody answer that way? Or find books on the matter? Like I just don’t get it.

However, SOME (cough cough The Bee Movie cough cough) do barely any research at all. Fuck this one makes me want to pull my hair out. The jokes and all, yeah they can be funny, but I’m just SO off put by how INACCURATE the bees are! Again with the equal number of males and females. There were literal families of bees, no queens, like ??? Im gonna ignore the plot, even tho it is batshit crazy.

And why, for the love of god, make a ROMANCE between two ants of the SAME COLONY!!!?!?! THEY’RE BASICALLY SIBLINGS!?!? (Looking at you A Bug’s Life and Antz.)

It may just now be a thing of the past, however, because Sebastian J. Cricket’s design in Del Toro’s Pinocchio is seriously perhaps the best bug character design I’ve seen in film yet. So hopefully, all that LITERAL INCEST is from the past.

And these recent bug media like Hollow Knight, Bug Fables, and the small little bit I’ve seen from Social Moth and Human’s Be Gone have infinitely better designs to that hair pullingly frustrating stuff from these big companies looking to widely distribute their stuff.

Like lads. Just make them look alien. Make them look not human. By making them look human you’re just putting them in the uncanny valley.

Honestly, I just want some good bug rep in media. Anyone have any good bug media? Whether that be movies, shows, games etc. Primarily with the protags being bugs themselves, but I’ll accept some where they’re human.

I've been on a bit ob a Russell Crowe movie binge in the past few weeks and since he is almost sixty now, many of the movies I've watched were consequently older movies. and when I watched them, it struck me again, how much hollywood has changed in the last few decades when it comes to depicting men.

take Gladiator for example from the year 2000. Russell Crowe plays basically an action hero in it. he is a big, muscly dude, who is very strong and uses that strength to defeat his enemies. and this is what he looks like:

in the same year, Hugh Jackman as Wolverine looked like this in the first X-men movie:

in 2013 the same character played by the same actor looked like this:

it's a bit much, isn't it? I mean, he looks so skinny.

and if we go even further back: look at what the womanizer character Face from the A-team looked like in the 80s show vs the 2010 movie reboot:

maybe the difference isn't that big but it really startled me when I watched that movie for the first time. in my mind there was no reason why Face should be particularly muscular since he is the charming one not the one known for being particularly strong.

if we go even further back, look at the charmin womanizer character Hawkeye in M*A*S*H from the 70's.

I know he's a doctor and there is no reason for him to be ripped but I got the feeling if they did the show now, he would be.

I don't know what my point really is I'm just saying I got a bit nostalgic when watching these men. I cannot be the only one who'd rather see more of this:

also, as a sidenote: Russell Crowe gained a lot of weight for the nice guys and he is a fucking powerhouse in that film, like, when he punches someone, you really feel it because of the weight that is behind it and the shere mass of his body.

(even if this may look different, he's about to break Ryan Gosling's character's arm. I couldn't find a gif of him punching someone but I swear it looks painfull as hell.)

so, in short: can we get big, heavy action guys back? cause I'm tired of seeing these skinny, despite being muscular dudes who look dehydrated as hell and on steroids.

and can we stop making characters ripped just for the sake of it? cause I'd rather cuddle with a guy looking like Hawkeye than one looking like Face from the new A-team movie.
